unsolicited song rec tiem XD
I have been listening to this on repeat all month, probably because we’re watching One Piece and I say Galley-La with the same cadence. It might be good mood music for Heliumädchen’s climax - or would Atta’s theme be more appropriate? 👇
Probably gonna go with this one. Will still draw something inspired by “Burning Love” when the time comes, though.
[sillypoo simping intensifies]
I find myself humming the chorus throughout the day. There’s something fun about the 2000s Dance Song Sleazy Manvoice.
It’s my theme song!! Everything you do at your sad wagie job becomes more purposeful with this young edgelord’s anthem blasting your ears.
I think I recommended The Gereg in an earlier post. It’s almost too close to call, but this one is my favorite track. Is there a name for a weeaboo, but for Mongols? Because that’s the feeling that The Hu inspires.

I know Iterators being A Thing is technically a massive Rain World spoiler, but honestly that’s what got me to play the game in the first place. You’re telling me there’s massive supercomputers built so tall that they reach above the clouds? They’re so huge that their processes dramatically alter their surrounding environment? You can get inside them and run around and explore?? AND they have names and faces and personalities, and you can talk to them personally????????

Whatever you say, Anon on Tumblr dot com o7
*six minutes later*
Huh :0 /pos
(music-thoughts under the cut)
First I want to shout to the people of Genius.com, because I'm often one of those people to miss certain themes in music, unless I've listened to it one bajillion times (Also I don't know much about ants lol) So now I can use the context, to form a more interesting opinion than "I had fun listening to a song :)"
Anyway. First (this is a LD song after all), the beat is very funky. It's interesting how the very first chorus almost gives like 'church-song-vibes' if you know what I mean, before the more vibey part kicks in. The notes on "you can't remember knowing" scratch a specific part in my brain. Also, the wind-chimes are just a really nice touch :]
Second, lyrics I'm always in awe of people who can write about such "menial" topics (like ant mills) in such fascinating ways. The way the entire "You can't remember where you're going" part is about the "simple" act of losing the pheromone track; especially considering the mirrored version later in the song. The way you seem to forget literally everything about your life, to the point you believe to be born in the spiral. The way you're so tied to the pheromones, that without them, you simply give yourself up to death, without complaint. Happily, even.
Basically the entire last chorus (with the hurricane metaphors), reads like such obvious coping, but its also obvious that the ants truly believe it. That they feel joy in their self-created doom, that they do not care about anything that outsiders have to say or think about them "You've got to keep it flowing". There is no other choice.
And, of course, the (false? who's to say) individuality within the group that is constantly referenced "You are one ant" "Don't fret, you're leading the race" "Take the wheel, this could be your chance" "You're free now forever to dance" The ants take great pride in the group, but they also can't fully realize just how deeply they are affected by it, and how few of their decisions are truly theirs
And the entire way the narrative is framed is especially interesting, when we look at Neil's switch from "you" to "we". Of course he would sing about ant society in such a beautiful, but glorified way! He is also an ant! You are both trapped in the mill, and this false believe system!!!
Go listen to Spiral of Ants :)

Hi Dae! Sent a similar ask to Vi but I thought you would also be a good person to ask. A friend has enlisted me to help her find good books and movies and we are now at the stage of searching for more general/meta advice on finding (high-quality) books/movies on particular themes that are too hard to concisely describe for a straightforward search to yield much. If the question is too specific, any general description of how you pick books/movies for your to-read/to-watch list would be great, and if that's also hard to do then top-of-your-head fantasy/sci-fi recs are also much appreciated. Feel free to ignore this if you're too busy or don't know how to answer of course!
Hi! I'm happy that you thought of me, but I don't have a lot of advice because there's a lot of serendipity involved for me. Taking the latest novels I've most enjoyed, for example, I discovered Solaris because I watched Tarkovsky's film adaptation—and I discovered the movie because my high school professor mentioned it in class in 2020. I similarly read Crash because I watched the movie first, and I started reading Arlt because of a scene written by him that I heard read aloud on the radio by pure chance. So I guess my first real piece of advice is to keep your eyes and ears open?
I can't really speak on finding books on specific themes because I feel that they find me most of the time, but sometimes looking at which artists are friends with each other helps (Cronenberg and Clive Barker were like that to me), or seeing which filmmakers adapt which books (Cronenberg led me to Ballard and Burroughs). Tumblr parallels compilation posts aren't bad either.
Tumblr is a source of book recs to me too. I got a good percentage of my current TBR just by following Vi lol, and when I see a quote I really like I normally add the source to my TBR too (same with gifsets and movies). I also like to browse through bookshops even if I don't have money atm, just in case something catches my eye. Those two sources plus what my professors mention make up the bulk of it, but since I started logging my reading on The Storygraph (kind of like Goodreads) I also look at what it recommends me from time to time. The algorithm can't quite nail your preferences, but I do find stuff I wouldn't have found otherwise. You can also search for recommendations filtered by genre and mood there.
For movies, aside from seeing gifsets, I sometimes discover them through the actors in them. Very rarely, I click on Letterboxd's "films like" feature out of curiosity and find some interesting films.
I don't know if that was helpful, but as for sci-fi book recommendations, I can give you off the top of my head Solaris by Stanisław Lem (a psychologist is sent to a station that orbits around a planet covered by a vast, possibly sapient ocean), Crash by J.G. Ballard (a group of car crash fetishists explore the relationship between the human body and technology), and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (political intrigue set on a planet populated by hermaphrodite aliens). In terms of fantasy, His Dark Materials is a series for children that I still find a lot of value in as an adult.
For movies, my first recommendation is Cronenberg's early body horror films (especially Videodrome, Crash, and The Fly) plus Crimes of the Future (2022). I also recommend Poor Things (2023) (describing it as a female Frankenstein's monster does neither character justice, but you get the gist), Primer (2004) (convoluted time travel movie), Pan's Labyrinth (2006) (dark fantasy set in post-war Spain), and of course Solaris (1972). I also rather liked the Alien prequels (as well as obviously the original films, but those are better known).
I hope this was somewhat helpful and good luck!

((You like the mystery genre? 👀 Can you recommend some books? I'm always on the lookout for new mystery books to read!))
((I’m the same way, Anon! I’m always on the lookout for new things to read! I’m happy to help out with this. This is one of those kinds of things I always love to help with lol.
I compiled a list with variety, so hopefully you’ll find something here that you would like. And a lot of these are the starts of series as well! I put a ** by ones that are of a series.))
The June Boys - Court Stevens
We Were Kings - Court Stevens
Thr3e - Ted Dekker
Obsessed - Ted Dekker
Stalking Jack the Ripper - Keri Maniscalo**
Magpie Murders - Anthony Horowitz**
The House of Silk - Anthony Horowitz
The Tarleton Murders - Breck England
A Study in Scarlet Women - Sherry Thomas**
The Stuff of Nightmares - James Lovegrove** (not technically but he writes a lot of books in this category)
Comes a Horseman - Robert Liparulo
Art in the Blood - Bonnie MacBird**
Vicious - V.E. Schwab** (not really a mystery but worth the read)
The Gray Man - Mark Greaney** (not really a mystery but worth the read)
Hope this helps! And this is just a fraction of my little library, so if you need more I’ll see what I can come up with.
Good luck and happy reading!!))

is there a way for me to become an ant
You lay down on an ant hill ( without ruining it) and let the ants consume your soul, slowly turning you into one of them by helping your soul to reincarnate as an ant.
If you mean in the roleplay, just send Asks/submissions or messages and roleplay as an ant! You could pretend to be some sort of worker leafcutter ant and say that you found some sort of food or smthn (leafcutter ants are herbivores and use all the food they find to feed the Fungus gardens that they consume) or you could pretend to be an ant from a different colony or even a different bug or animal. Make sure to add an emoji at the end showing what bug/animal you are roleplaying as (example, leafcutter bee would be 🐝🍃) so that I can tag it. I suggest you look through my blog to see some of the roleplays I've done already :]
