Yesterday we celebrated the life of Sir Ernest Shackleton with the dedication of a new memorial to the Antarctic explorer in the Abbey's cloisters.

The memorial was unveiled by HRH The Princess Royal on the 150th anniversary of Shackleton's birth.

Looking back I didn't illustrate it super well- it was intended to be something less earthy, yes. Not straight black though, It was supposed to be a really dark red. It seems black.? But anything it stains is stained red. And it was supposed to be rather thick compared to human blood.

If I ever draw it again, I'll be sure to get it to look right next time <XD

Now as for Peso. I think its impossible for Peso and Barnacles to have met as kids- not only is there that age difference,, But I thought that polar bears are from the Arctic, and penguins are from the Antarctic. On the other side of the planet!

None the less- if they somehow met, I don't imagine much would happen other than them potentially becoming friends. :0 Kwazii sure ain't going anywhere, he's sticking with Barnacles family!

I was thinking that no one else in the group other than Frisk remembers. But Jevil? He.. had some kind of reaction to it.

Like when the reset occurred, Jevil had this horrible spike of anxiety and he broke out in a cold sweat and shakes. But before he could even process what was wrong, Frisk swooped in and saved Seams life. Right after he was saved, the shaking and sweating began to subside.. huh, strange..

(The second question was answered in the ask right above this one! :} )

In the comic that I was intending to draw- we would see little snip-bits of most everyone's reactions.

Jevil reacted how you'd expect.. he completely broke down. Screaming and wailing over Seams body..

Frisk froze at first, but then turned on her heel and sprinted into the woods in order to uh.. reset. No screaming, no panic. Just dead silent, sprinting into the woods..

Goner kid was freaking out so bad over Jevil screaming that when she saw Frisk run.. all she could think to do was run after her. So she did..

We don't see Grillby's face, but you can see his hand light up greenish/blue and his coat burst into flames as he realized Seam is dead..

River and Spamton weren't really meant to be seen on screen. But you can see Asgore physically become more misty/unstable when Jevil started screaming..

You know? Maybe for the sake of everyone it was better that I didn't end up drawing all that <XD 💔

As Freddy explains, he (and the others) had a "bug" in his system. Which made his eyes purple. (Although he wasn't aware that they were purple-)

And after he crashed on stage they reset his system. Wiping the "bug" from his programming. Turning his eyes blue again :0

It's been a while since I've thought about them.. 🤔 If we're using the same formula as I did before.. (the stories of the real life cars are translated to the characters).. then that means some of them aren't doing so hot <XD

We've got a few break downs, some are still broken down. A few sold to better homes.. and a few new (very old) comers! Some are back on the road and some are still on the road when they probably shouldn't be <XD

All in all, I'd say they're doin ok :}

A Small Noncomprehensive List Of RPGs I Have Written About Romance

Given the posts that have been circulating through my orbit, I think there might currently be a gremlinish interest in this.

What If We Kissed... is a core system that restructures how roleplaying games work. Players set goals for scenes ("I want to be kissed", "I want to doubt myself") and the GM helps them work towards these goals. Players can award the GM points called Honey when they do a thing the player likes, and the GM's role is to use these cues to tell a story that that player enjoys.

My Liege is a hack that modifies any other roleplaying game, changing the core dice mechanic instead to asking the GM for a truth or dare.

It's Getting Hot In Here is a strip ttrpg about exploring the Antarctic when suddenly the boat you arrived on Experiences Technical Difficulties. Mechanics involve taking clothes off and also putting clothes on other people. It also is the only strip ttrpg that I know of.

The Bone Zone is exactly what it sounds like---a ttrpg about 1800s dinosaur necromancy. Also at the end you decide whether to leave yourself vulnerable to the rival you've been sabotaging and antagonizing throughout the whole game.

Tall Lady Castle Game is part of a trilogy about miscommunication and monsters. One of you is a monster living in an old gothic castle, and the other is the handsome intruder who has bumbled into your lair. The sequel games are about being a hot intruder in an old gothic castle and *trying* to be caught by its resident monster, and about systematically failing to notice when you are being flirted with.

Date! That! Mothman! is part of an increasingly incoherent pentology about a world where mothmen suddenly arrived and the US government couldn't destroy them, so it instituted mandatory moth-dating.

Lastly, The Villainess Is Dispossessed is a troupe game where you all play as members of the harem of the titular princess. She has recently been disinherited, but will be allowed to reinherit if she marries well. You could theoretically have more than one person play as the princess, but it's still a system designed to have one player at the absolute center of attention.

Zethafree, Names, and Philza

So I've had the dregs of a constructed language haunting me for the last... ten years or so, and usually the way I get anything done is by rotating blorbos in my mind with it, so I have decided to construct a Quackity SMP AU with it for reasons that will hopefully be obvious at the end of this post.

Firstly, I've actually got a plot thread I can pull up again. According to my ideas document, I first cast a QSMP-in-space setting in May! I just hadn't quite figured out how to reconcile "QSMP is about Many Different Languages" with "I speak. One (and can curse in many now, thank you Roier)." How do you depict multiple alien languages?

You come up with some words, and some other words, and decide which ones go to which language, and then corespond those to the languages spoken on the QSMP. I have one started! It is called Zethafree, and most of the words currently in it are "things important to a middle schooler writing fantasy." I cannot find a word for hello but there is a word for vampire. There are also some words that sound a hell of a lot like parts of Philza's name, though, and that leads us into the actual reason I started this post.

The first pair is 'Fe' and 'Lza', 'soul' and 'trick', which is a pretty funny concept, actually, here's the Angel of Death, his public name is Soul-trick. Edgy birb. I could probably construct a narrative where that is the meaning of his name. But the other pair of words is a lot more fitting: "Felz", meaning "red", and "-za", which when used as a suffix is to indicate rank, specifically as part of the ruling family but not the ruler or the heir. Like the queen, the crown prince's younger brothers, or the sibling of the king here on Earth.

A princess, you might say, if you wanted to translate the name of Urahara Kisuke's sword spirit into Zethafree. And Philza is literally cosplaying the man at all times. That's already really good! Bleach reference! But in the story, why would Philza name himself that?

Why would the noted anarchist birb name himself something so strictly to do with governments?

Well, he IS the Angel of Death. He's been the Angel of Death since before Kristin, actually, because he gained that title on SMP Earth. Techno called him that for swooping over to murder Wilbur! Which means he gained that title when he was a member of the Antarctic Empire. When Techno was The Emperor of Ice. When he became Techno's right-hand man. 'The Angel of Death', you may note, is not 'Co-emperor'. And in every story Phil tells Chayanne? He's following Techno's plan. Techno leads, Phil enforces. This is how Phil remembers it.

Which means, that in this story I'm plotting, every single time Philza introduces himself, he says something like "I'm Captain Philza Minecraft of the Quesadilla SMP Ship 'The Great Wall'," and he means "Hi! I've named myself out of loyalty to my best friend. Whatever other ranks I've earned, you must also remember that I helped him rule an empire." He named himself 'Red Royalty' when he ran an empire, and he's kept that name, because that's when he met Techno.

Now I just have to figure out how the hell Fit, perpetual normal human guy, is going to figure out enough of that to ask Phil about it.

Alexander Ashford and Anthony Campbell presided at the table of the Jacob's Circle. Alexander as the rightful heir of the former Grand Master, Edward, and Anthony on behalf of Grand Master Mary-Anne, who was absent due to ill health. The Inner Circle, consisting of fifteen members, had been convened to decide on several issues raised by Ashford, the most important of which concerned Umbrella. The fifteen members, including the under-chiefs of the Campbell and Douglas clans and an Irish Catholic bishop, listened attentively to the Grand Master's proposal.

“Spencer still doesn't want any Jacobins working for Umbrella?” asked an elderly man in Scottish, dressed in Douglas clan tartan.

“No, no one. He made a deal with my father,” Ashford replied in the same language.

The fifteen members murmured among themselves. Campbell nudged Ashford closer.

“Won't it be possible in Antarctica?” he whispered.

“No,” he replied quietly. “Martin will come with me, but no one else. I don't want to risk it. The Institute is still vetting personnel at the base.”

“What do you think of the plan, ladies, and gentlemen?” Campbell raised his voice.

The murmuring stopped. A woman in the Campbell clan tartan raised her hand.

“I have a question about the virus. When Princess Alexia completes her development, where will the virus be hidden? At the Antarctic base?”

“First in my father's old private laboratory in Newcastle.”

“And then?” added the Irish priest.

“At St Andrews. One of our members who is a professor there will have the means to ensure its temporary concealment until the contract is signed and it is released. Any other questions?”

The fifteen members looked at each other in silence. There were no further questions. Ashford rose. Campbell and all fifteen members rose at the same time.

“Brothers and sisters of the Circle,” he continued in Scottish, “the convocation ends with the approval of the plan for the next five years. I pray that God will favour us in our undertaking.”

“Amen,” they all shouted in unison.

There was a friendly but naive king

The lyrics, engraved on a gold plate on the inside of the lid, flowed to the rhythm of the simple and beautiful melody. It was a feerical composition that enraptured the two children sitting on the tiled floor.

Their father had given them two identical, bulky music boxes for Alexia's graduation. Their only visible difference was the ant-shaped jewel that Alexander had included in the lid's opening mechanism in memory of Alexia's recent discovery: a blue ant for Alfred and a red ant for her. The piece corresponding to the insect's abdomen could be removed to operate the box's latch or unlatch it by inserting it. Both the jewel and the box were two masterpieces of craftsmanship worth their weight in gold. However, both children's fascination was not with the technical quality of the set, but with the song. The unnamed song that their father had ordered to be composed for them and which the twins had christened Berceuse.

Berceuse because it inspired a strange nostalgia for their early childhood, when both twins always lived together and without worries, when they imagined themselves as the protagonists of an endless fairy tale.

Alexia and Alfred held hands for the first time in three years.

They would never be separated again.

William Gordon Burn Murdoch was born on January 22nd 1862 in Edinburgh.

William went to Edinburgh University  he went to study art in Antwerp and Paris. A man of diverse interests,  'WG’ as he was known to family and close friends, was not only an artist but an accomplished piper, explorer, fisherman, hunter, Scottish nationalist, whaler, and writer, or just your average Scottish polymath.

His activities involved him in extensive travels: he described himself as having ‘wandered quite far afield to the Arctic and Antarctic, and even to 'the back parts of Mull’ and also the back parts of China’. Having travelled in different countries, and in a variety of different intellectual spaces in both arts and science, it is hardly surprising that WG has left a substantial and dispersed, body of work and a rich and equally dispersed archive.

His first book, From Edinburgh to the Antarctic, recounted his experiences on the Dundee Antarctic Whaling Expedition of the southern summer of 1892-1893. As a result of the exhibition of paintings he produced of that expedition he was credited by one critic as having been the first artist in residence in the Antarctic regions; he was also one of the first people to play the bagpipes on that continent.

Modern whaling and bear hunting described his experiences as a commercial whaler, and his various hunts for polar bears; he presented a polar bear cub, which he named 'Starboard’, to the Zoological Society of Scotland, another organisation with he was close involved.

From Edinburgh to India and Burmah recounted his journey following the Prince and Princess of Wales on their historic visit to India in 1905-6.

WG’s journey went on to include a voyage up the Irrawaddy to Bhamo and a brief foray by mule-train across the border into China. His books, and his many magazine articles, were written in an idiosyncratic style which often laid emphasised his pride in his native Scotland. His paintings and sketches are in numerous public and private collections, across the British Isles and further afield.

It is impossible to do justice to the range of interests and the consequent diversity of contacts and engagements of Burn Murdoch. Suffice to say that his diverse interests, inspired and fostered by his friend, and sometime patron Patrick Geddes, and his spirit of multi-disciplinary exploration were of the sort which characterised the discipline of geography in the late 19th and early 20th century. Not that WG was typical, he was in many ways a one-off, one of the more colourful, larger than life, characters involved with the subject and with the Society. His published works, his paintings and his archival legacy together provide a fascinating glimpse of the man, of his world, and of geography as it was understood and practiced around the turn of the nineteenth century.

As well as artworks like the Dundee Antarctic Whaling Expedition 1892 as seen in pic 2, his books featured many pencil sketches, some with humour, like the one of him being chased by a polar Bear titled “There’s no place like home”, which tickles me a wee bit! 

W.G Burn Murdoch died in 1939 in Edinburgh. He and his wife had lived at Arthur Lodge, where they entertained visitors, including Roald  Amundsen and  Robert Falcon Scott.

Submariner Summer 30

Ay mi amigos, it is time for a key edition of #SubmarinerSummer, because here in part 30 we are covering Tales to Astonish #96: Somewhere Stands...Skull Island! Namor faces off Plunderer and his vibra-gun on Skull Island right on the cover; love both figures' sense of motion

Raymond Marais takes over the tale, with Everett pencils and Colletta inks. The Title page gives us Namor back on his throne in Atlantis, ready for another Council of War. Dorma's still voicing her misgivings, though, thinking he's acting in rash hatred.

But Namor can't let go that the "air-breathers" had the temerity to build an undersea city in his territory. He feels its too late for diplomacy and he must act now. Vashti speaks up and reminds him he'd best take care of Plunderer first; Namor agrees, and knows where he is

As a Ka-Zar villain, Plunderer's base is of course in the Savage Land. So, Namor goes towards Antarctic waters since the Savage Land is hidden there. While there he visits the crumbling ruins that was his boyhood home, the previous Atlantis now destroyed, and makes his way to-

-the grave of Princess Fen, his dear beloved mother, the very sight of which threatens to overwhelm him. He attempts to banish the sadness with a happy memory. But he soon recalls instead the city's death and destruction, and her's, at the hands of an attack from the surface

So now we've seen how he lost his first city, his mother, and his memory, though he isn't sure who on the surface is to blame. But the surface keeps pushing, so he feels he must go to war...once Plunderer is taken care of. Before he can, though: Savage Land sea monster attack!

Just then, Dorma arrives, having felt compelled to go where Namor went. Unfortunately, she picks the wrong moment to get closer, as just then Plunderer attacks Namor and she gets caught in the blast radius!

But it takes more than that to stop Namor, especially when he's in the water, much to Plunderer's shock. Just as Namor is about to wrap him up, he reveals he saw Dorma sink from the previous attack and a wild-eyed Namor lays him out before going to her. She's actually fine, but he's angry

She wants to be beside him, but he tells her to return to Atlantis. She wonders if there's something else behind his anger. You ask me, he should keep Action Dorma. Unfortunately by the time Namor returns to the Plunderer, he's laid a trap for our Prince

Um. Plunderer sure knows how to outfit some henchmen, huh? Better rename it from Skull Island to Beefcake Island. At any rate, Plunderer has a scheme in motion because, y'know, villain. Meanwhile, Dorma makes it back to Atlantis, where their screens give a puzzling view of Namor

But the truth is Namor is caught, and the Plunderer's plan is conquest! We are once again at a cliffhanger, Namor Nation.

Once again we see the debate between Dorma and Namor about war, we revisit the site of the Atlantis from the Golden Age comics, go over its destruction, and the loss of one of the key characters in all Namor's history, his mother Fen. Oh, plus a sea monster, and a villain scheme. Quite a full issue, and you see why I called it key right at the start!

But now we look forward, because NEXT we will cover Tales to Astonish #97: The Sovereign And The Savages

The King and The Queen Consort this morning visited Altab Ali Park, Adler Street, London E1, and were received by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London (Sir Kenneth Olisa). His Majesty, escorted by the Joint Founder of British Bangladeshi Power and Inspiration (Ms Ayesha Qureshi), and Her Majesty, escorted by Mr Abdal Ullah (Joint Founder), viewed the Park and met members of the local community. The King and The Queen Consort afterwards visited Brick Lane, London E2, and, having been received by Her Excellency the High Commissioner of Bangladesh (Ms Saida Muna Tasneem), walked along Brick Lane meeting representatives of the local community. Their Majesties subsequently visited Brick Lane Mosque, were received by the Treasurer of Brick Lane Mosque Trust (Mr Hamidur Rahman Choudhury) and met members from faith, business, charity and Covid-19-impacted communities.
