Echoes of the Past: The Silver Bridge and the Mothman Legend
West Virginia's paranormal landscape, marked by the enigmatic Flatwoods Monster and Mothman sightings, is deeply intertwined with the state's complex historical narrative. The region's indigenous heritage, colonial wars, and industrial development have woven a rich tapestry that potentially contributes to its paranormal reputation. The Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 and the alleged curse by Chief Cornstalk in 1777, following his death, are often cited as precursors to the area's propensity for disasters and unexplained phenomena.
John Keel's theory of "window areas" suggests that specific locations and times facilitate the manifestation of paranormal phenomena due to a thinner fabric between dimensions or realities. The years 1952 and 1966-1967, marked by the Flatwoods Monster and Mothman sightings respectively, are significant in this context. This theory provides a framework for understanding the clustering of UFO sightings, monster encounters, and other unexplained events in West Virginia, potentially linked to the region's tumultuous past.
The Flatwoods Monster, described as a towering, glowing-eyed creature, was reportedly seen by a group of children and adults in 1952, reflecting the anxieties and fascinations of the Cold War era. In contrast, the Mothman, characterized by its winged, red-eyed appearance, was spotted in Point Pleasant between 1966 and 1967, a period of economic decline for the local steel industry. The creature's appearances were often interpreted as an omen, culminating in the tragic Silver Bridge collapse in 1967, which claimed 46 lives and further entwined the Mothman legend with the area's history of tragedy.
Personal accounts, such as Linda Sigman's encounter with the Mothman and a UFO, highlight the profound impact on witnesses, including health issues, psychological effects, and the development of psychic abilities in some cases. The presence of Men in Black, reportedly surveilling and silencing witnesses, adds a layer of mystery and raises questions about the official handling of paranormal events.
Researchers like John Keel have significantly advanced our understanding of these phenomena, despite the challenges posed by fear and skepticism. The Mothman has transcended its origins to become a cultural icon, influencing local identity and economy, and exemplifying the complex interplay between the paranormal, folklore, and community identity set against West Virginia's storied past.
By combining historical context, personal accounts, and theoretical perspectives, we gain a deeper understanding of West Virginia’s paranormal phenomena. This unique blend of factors highlights the state’s intriguing connection to the unexplained, inviting further exploration into the mysteries intertwined with its complex past.

once again feeling mentally closer to my lecturer than my peers. the pure joy in our eyes when 💫physiology💫. i am the loneliest creature in the world.
#i did have a fun thought. it isn't about the age group. it's about being a teacher.#if i manage to get a job at the university there will be at least one person like that there#like this lecturer was recently an assistant so. it isn't about being old it's about caring about the subject in that particular way#that makes you want to teach it#it was fun! i even managed to put my bad experiences with neurological tests aside#because we did a couple of them it was so fun to be involved and ask questions. like it always is.#i honestly really love neurology. and anything that has to do with the senses... it's so beautiful#letters from stephanie*

Chat how do I make this university solavellan fic not be professor/student coded bc I VERY MUCH SO want to avoid that
#solas isn’t her professor#but he is a researcher and a scribe in one of her classes#I like the idea of him maybe subbing or being a guest lecturer but is that weird?#it’s not weird if he doesn’t assign grades right? like where is the line here? what should I avoid other than the obvious?#like I like the idea but I can see how it could be icky? should I scrap that? what’s the vibe out there in the tumblr void for this?#I also want her to somehow end up working with him in his research#I was thinking of having her threaten a student and having to help him as punishment#this is not preferred by either Lavellan or Solas#he doesn’t want her help and she doesn’t want to help him either#but the chancellor (Dean) said it so they’ve gotta deal with it#and he again doesn’t pay her or give her grades for this assistance either#should I run with that idea or go a different route?

The Birth of an Industry: Fairchild’s Pivotal Role in Shaping Silicon Valley
In the late 1950s, the Santa Clara Valley of California witnessed a transformative convergence of visionary minds, daring entrepreneurship, and groundbreaking technological advancements. At the heart of this revolution was Fairchild Semiconductor, a pioneering company whose innovative spirit, entrepreneurial ethos, and technological breakthroughs not only defined the burgeoning semiconductor industry but also indelibly shaped the region’s evolution into the world-renowned Silicon Valley.
A seminal 1967 promotional film, featuring Dr. Harry Sello and Dr. Jim Angell, offers a fascinating glimpse into Fairchild’s revolutionary work on integrated circuits (ICs), a technology that would soon become the backbone of the burgeoning tech industry. By demystifying IC design, development, and applications, Fairchild exemplified its commitment to innovation and knowledge sharing, setting a precedent for the collaborative and open approach that would characterize Silicon Valley’s tech community. Specifically, Fairchild’s introduction of the planar process and the first monolithic IC in 1959 marked a significant technological leap, with the former enhancing semiconductor manufacturing efficiency by up to 90% and the latter paving the way for the miniaturization of electronic devices.
Beyond its technological feats, Fairchild’s entrepreneurial ethos, nurtured by visionary founders Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, served as a blueprint for subsequent tech ventures. The company’s talent attraction and nurturing strategies, including competitive compensation packages and intrapreneurship encouragement, helped establish the region as a magnet for innovators and risk-takers. This, in turn, laid the foundation for the dense network of startups, investors, and expertise that defines Silicon Valley’s ecosystem today. Notably, Fairchild’s presence spurred the development of supporting infrastructure, including the expansion of Stanford University’s research facilities and the establishment of specialized supply chains, further solidifying the region’s position as a global tech hub. By 1965, the area witnessed a surge in tech-related employment, with jobs increasing by over 300% compared to the previous decade, a direct testament to Fairchild’s catalyzing effect.
The trajectory of Fairchild Semiconductor, including its challenges and eventual transformation, intriguingly parallels the broader narrative of Silicon Valley’s growth. The company’s decline under later ownership and its subsequent re-emergence underscore the region’s inherent capacity for reinvention and adaptation. This resilience, initially embodied by Fairchild’s pioneering spirit, has become a hallmark of Silicon Valley, enabling the region to navigate the rapid evolution of the tech industry with unparalleled agility.
What future innovations will emerge from the valley, leveraging the foundations laid by pioneers like Fairchild, to shape the global technological horizon in the decades to come?

Microbes Help Plants Beat the Shade
Shade avoidance responses are defined as the plastic responses of plants to neighboring shading signals through changes in the light spectrum, which limit planting density in modern agricultural practices.

I saw many posts saying that universities should ban AI etc. and I would love for it to happen but in reality some unis are simply pro AI. In my uni, the best case scenario is a lecturer is curious about AI, but many of them encourage students to use AI.
#my friend wanted to look something up and used chat gpt and when i asked why she used it instead of google she said#that they ask them to use it so often during classes that she got used to it#and one of my lecturers has paid version of chat gpt#he used it to see if chat can help us with some tedious things like checking the lenght of audio files or something like that#but still#one lecturer showed us AI pictures#NOT TO MENTION THAT THE UNI AS A WHOLE USES AI FOR PROMOS#AND THERE IS AI ASSISTANT ON THE WEBSITE#(this assistant scared me 'cause it started speaking when i tried to look something up)#(and i didnt expect that)#this turned into a rant sorry#im just tired of hearing about ai and i dont know what to think anymore#it seems like everyone's using it now#at least i can feel better cause i am writing my thesis by myself with no ai involved B)
