Thought y'all would like to see my bases without orks in the way and with a more natural lighting!

After much trial and error, I think I'm starting to figure out basing.

As you can see, I've painted some elementals to match my Hellion! And during my first game with the hellion, I believe I do not like it all that much, unfortunately. I used the A variant, and unmodified LRMs just simply do not spark joy. Perhaps I'll try the C variant with the Artemis-infused ATM-6.

That said, I think I've found a good method for basing with sand. Spread glue on base with toothpick, submerge in sand, lightly tap off excess. Then if more sand is desired, add it. To seal the sand in place, add droplets of water to the base til moist, then add droplets of glue on top. With the water in the base, it'll spread out within the base. Paint as normal, add foliage.

I should add some pebbles or something next time. But yeh, I like how these turned out!

I liked the openforge system enough that when I decided to make some more natural terrain, I carved up the foam board and attached individual squares to the bases so I could attach them with magnets and rearrange the battlefield to be different each time. After that, just followed a basic guide to grassy mini bases.

While the lines between tiles are quite distinct, I've found I rather like that as it's easy to judge distance without having to mark a grid or pull out a tape measure. Keeping tiles from 2x2 to 4x4 inches makes it easy to tell how many squares across it is without losing room for detail within the lines.

Today it allowed me - with its divine grace - to undercoat some Renegade Ogryn models (to be used for Necromunda Slave Ogryn), and some bases that I tried using Liquitex Crackle Paste on.

Busted out the ol' 3D printer to make myself some texture rollers for my various miniature projects. I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the results. Below the cut some closeups of both roller and unpainted test pieces plus the sources for the stl's of these three rollers.

ULTRAMODERN/POST-APOC PARKING LOT BASE TUTORIAL

Working on some minis for Project Z from Warlord and I thought I'd share how I'm doing the bases! I'm painting them separate from the models for reasons that'll quickly become apparent.

PREP: Before basecoating, I applied watered-down PVA glue in small patches on the base, then dunked them in fine modelling sand, shaking off the excess.

STEP 1: Prime the base black. I'm using a Vallejo brush-on primer here.

STEP 2: Drybrush and lightly stipple a pale, bluish grey. I'm using Vallejo Ghost Grey. Don't worry if some parts are a little too bright, we can go over that with black later.

STEP 3: Using two pieces of masking tape, cover the base, leaving a thin gap between the pieces of tape. Try and press it in a bit to reduce bleed. Then, with a domed drybrush, heavily stipple your line colour, typically white or yellow. I'm using Citadel Flash Gitz Yellow. If you want a second line, repeat the process at a right angle to the first!

STEP 4: Using some black and a fine brush, clean up the line, chip it as desired, and bring back any areas where the drybrush was too heavy.

STEP 5: Using a heavily frayed brush, stipple on some Vallejo Dried Blood, followed by some Fresh Blood in the centre of the larger patches. And you're done!!

Back to "Hobby Grunt Work" today, since I wrapped up the existing projects. I'm making magnetized bases for my Lokhust Destroyers / Annihilators.

The rods are 4mm clear acrylic they hold pretty sturdy on the bottom of the models and won't snap a peg off in the bottom like the GW ones would.
