Ramblin' Man - Film Review: You Can't Stay Here ★★★1/2

The new queer cinema of the 1990s gets reborn courtesy of one of its OGs, Todd Verow. With his micro-budget new thriller, You Can’t Stay Here, co-written by longtime collaborator Jim Dwyer, that raw, confrontational, punk sensibility feels like a breath of fresh air in our current stale, over-processed cinematic environment. Harkening back to his work on Frisk, which put Verow on the map in 1995, the film plays like a mashup of that title along with Cruising and Blow-Up.

Guillermo Diaz stars as Rick, a photographer, who finds himself drawn to the Ramble, a busy Central Park gay cruising spot circa 1993 in New York City. Rather than engaging in hookups himself, Rick prefers to hide behind his camera taking pictures of the many sexual scenarios on display. Before you can say “Antonioni”, Rick has spotted something nefarious going on in his photos, an ominous guy in a trench coat. On a return visit to the park, Rick witnesses the man known as Adam (Justin Ivan Brown) committing a brutal murder. That he presents as an all-seeing, all-knowing vampire armed with a knife and a lethal bottle of poppers, serves as an apt metaphor for the AIDS crisis decimating the gay community. The dangerous game of cat and mouse between Rick and Adam takes up the bulk of the running time, along with a burgeoning relationship with one of the Ramble regulars named Hale, played sweetly by Becca Blackwell.

While scary and suspenseful, the real heart of the film lies with Rick’s internal struggles. He appears to fear intimacy with the story serving as a journey towards accepting himself. He shares a son with his ex-wife Samantha (a wonderfully grounded Karina Arroyave), who caught him with another man one day in their apartment. He’s also tending to his ailing mother, an excellent Marlene Forte, who doesn’t hold back when spewing homophobic comments directed at her son. His demanding boss Wren, comically played by Vanessa Aspillaga, adds additional stress to his life.

I saw this film as a course correction to Cruising, which only vaguely alluded to Al Pacino’s sexual awakening as he hunted down a gay serial killer. In Verow’s film! he addresses similar themes far more explicitly. Bonus points for no dialogue like, “Hips or lips?” Verow, like the late William Friedkin, doesn’t shy away from graphic sexuality but the gay male gaze adds an authenticity Cruising lacked.

Much of the credit for the success of the film goes to Diaz, who delivers a quiet, soulful performance with all of the horrors of the world right there in his empathetic eyes. No stranger to the new queer cinema and low-budget 90s films himself, with appearances in such seminal movies of the era such as Stonewall, Party Girl, I Think I Do, and Nowhere, it’s wonderful to see Diaz embracing his roots. He’s had a string of larger scale appearances in Weeds, Scandal, and Bros, all wonderful, but it’s exciting that he sought out Verow as a collaborator due to his desire to do something with more of an edge. Ryan Murphy has dedicated his career to lifting up queer voices and it’s lovely to see an actor of Diaz’s caliber doing the same. More of that, please!

This film will have its detractors who can’t get past its low budget production values, but in its own scrappy way, this film succeeds. I especially loved its John Carpenter-esque synth score by Greg Sabo which rides a fine line between pulse-pounding and campiness. Same goes for the film itself, which shrewdly personifies the terrors of its era while also possessing a little of that DIY John Waters humor. Add the beauty of a lost soul finding tenderness and you have a film that stands out amongst more forgettable fare.

Art: Any art catches my fancy, other than n@k3ds. I like to paint, do DIYs, and draw. I'm not too bad, but could def. do better. My favorite genre of art is landscape. I can't draw: eyes, mouths, ears, noses, faces, or random hairs. Hands are ok-ish.

Writing: I write on Quotev as @AwesomeQuizzed (and @AwesomeQuizzed2 and @AwesomeQuizzed3), on 3 accounts. I write poems, stories, short stories, fanfiction, and fantasy. I am a grammar freak, but I can control it.

Movies: My favorite cartoon or whatever is Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and I haven't seen the other stuff surrounding that movie (I don't wanna). I love The Fast and The Furious series, as well as the Star Wars series (except the last few movies), Harry Potter (haven't read the books), Narnia (again, haven't read the books), and LoTR/Hobbit series.

Shows: My shows include Supernatural, Arrow (not finished), Lego Ninjago (not finished), Charmed (older one), The Good Doctor, House, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago PD, ER, OUAT, and Castle (I'm like Richard Castle).

Books: I have read a lot, especially in 7th grade. One of my favorite books is Green Angel by Alice Hoffman. One of my favorite series is FableHaven/DragonWatch by Brandon Mull. I also love the Riordanverse, Zodiac series (by Romina Russell), The Naturals (by Jennifer Lynn Barnes) (*I haven't gotten to read the last book: Twelve*), Eragon (by Christopher Paolini) (*haven't read Murtagh's book yet*), The Blackwell Pages (by K.L. Armstrong), Hush, Hush (by Becca Fitzpatrick), etc.

Extra (Non-categorical): I also love the Batfamily, the DCU, and Marvel. Shel Silverstein is my favorite poem writer.

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Becca Blackwell Is A Natural Disruptor

Becca Blackwell was sitting at Cheryl’s Global Soul, a venerable soul food restaurant in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Blackwell, who is trans and uses they/them pronouns, had just left their CrossFit gym a few blocks away when, right outside, a man started talking to them. 

“He was this real old-school New Yorker, Italian guy, ranting about the neighborhood and how it changed, using all kinds of ‘whoa!’ words.” At the table, Blackwell transformed into character, imitating him: “‘I remember when the blanks and the blanks ran around here. You know who owns this building? A Jew. Man, they’re gonna rape us, those Jews. Then the market’s gonna crash.’”

An awestruck smile crept over Blackwell’s face. To this man, they had passed, not only as a straight, cis male, but also as a racist and anti-Semite. Like most queer New Yorkers of a certain age, the 40-something Blackwell has seen everything, heard everything, been called everything, and keeps their sanity intact with a twisted sense of humor. “And here I thought that Brooklyn had lost its old-school charm.”

Three days before, Blackwell had just finished an acclaimed run of the play ”Hurricane Diane” at the New York Theater Workshop, by playwright Madeleine George. The off-Broadway production introduced larger audiences to Blackwell’s acting skills ― their range, their magnetic stage presence, their uncanny ability to flip from humor to pathos in a second as if they have one of those comedy/tragedy masks in their back pocket.
