TRANSLATION The Bechdel test makes us realize how important the female figure is within a movie and, I didn't know, I found out today, it comes from a comic book, a comic book that was made where two women talk and one says to the other, "No, look, I only come to the movies if the movie has more than two female characters, if the female characters talk to each other and if these two female characters don't talk about men or at least not only about men." These are the three characteristics to see if a film passes the so-called Bechdel test. So next time you watch a movie at home, at the cinema or even a TV series watch a little bit, how many female characters are there? Observe whether they are characters who also have phrases to speak or whether they are simply there to make themselves look good, and even if these characters speak, be careful to see what kind of dialogues they have, whether they talk only about men or whether they talk about external things as well, not only about their femininity, but also about practical things and what they can do, technical things, their work, their skills, their specialties. The Bechdel test, there are sites that analyze a lot of movies that to see whether or not they meet these to these criteria that I repeat are very easy to adapt, however this Bechdel test can also be applied to video games, because more and more even in video games the female figures are either not there at all , or if they do exist they have ancillary , secondary roles and in any case they are not roles that give much importance to the game. I know there are exceptions, I say in principle the majority of games. Not only that, but some research has been done, you know in video games today there is a lot of dialogue, almost as much as in a book, almost as much as in a movie, and once you have dialogue with some characters, they generate others create, there are real let's say trees , branches of dialogue, and they did this research and found that if you talk only with male characters you win the game much sooner and with a much higher score, if on the other hand in games that have both male and female characters talking, talking only and exclusively with female characters, you end up later and with a much lower score, so it entices the people who play the game to interject only with male characters. Here, this is a message to those who listen to me and who make video games. Give us interesting and game-winning female characters. hiya, i saw you comment on a post about the bechdel test, and i just wanted to let you know (since your comment seemed to imply you were unaware of this) that the bechdel test is not a test for feminism or female quotas or progressiveness or anything like that, the bechdel test is literally just a test for lesbians. are there two named female characters who interact with each other about something other than a male love interest? yes? then they are lesbians and this is now a lesbian film. it's a joke test about how little respresentation lesbians have on film (almost all "lesbian" films are bisexual films, with the "lesbian" characters having male love interests at some point in their lives - remember, these characters are not real people, they are fictional and have no free will, and therefore the decision to give them male love interests was a conscious choice by the writing team who are forcing heterocentrism onto their lesbian characters). a pair of lesbians jokingly made a comic about how easy it is to make your own lesbian representation by simply deciding any two female named characters who exist in the same canon are now lesbians, and now everyone who isn't a lesbian gets defensive about it because they think it's a test of how progressive a work is. it isn't! it's just about lesbians!
?????????????
I don't know where this came from? I don't remember making any comment about the Bechdel test recently, I barely ever leave a comment, I do tag profusely tho, so maybe it was from years ago? Either way, you seem to be wrong?
This is according to Wikipedia, which I understand a lot of people don't take seriously, but you can find the exact same definition pretty much everywhere? For instance, bechdeltest. com
Also, the original comic strip didn't say anything about lesbians????
I'm so confused right now
#am i in the wrong here because I don't think so#i'm baffled at this anon#also show me the comment!#because i seriously don't remember it#bechdel test

Having the archives of #LaVieAuGrandAir available online has been priceless. I have a binder full of them from 1900-1909. Sadly I don’t speak French but for photo reference they’re a game changer. Figures like Taylor are remembered in this rather flat and shallow way. This pics are a reminder that he was more than a racer. He was a human, who chubbed up in the off-season. He was a world traveler, circumnavigating the globe twice when few people strayed from their hometowns. Most importantly was a family man. I imagine him seeing things anew through his daughter Sydney’s eyes and worrying about making it home safe to see her and his wife Daisy. My book will fail the #bechdeltest pretty spectacularly given the man’s world that #velo was (and largely still is) His wife and daughter present a small opportunity to broaden representation a little. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl1b4kDppQm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I've always found it hilarious when people (read: men) complain about the Bechdel Test, because the bar could literally not be any lower.
How many movies have you seen where there are two men who:
1. Have names
2. Talk to each other
3. Talk to each other about something other than men??
Thousands. Millions. And yet they act like women doing those same things is a revolutionary idea.
Btw, I know some movies don't pass the Reverse Bechdel Test, but let's be honest, how many of those are there compared to all the movies that don't pass the Bechdel Test?

Bechdel test
What is the Bechdel test? It’s a way of assessing how often women are excluded from movies and how centered their roles are around men.
It originated in Alison Bechdels 1985 comic “Dykes to watch out for”. In the comic 2 women are having a conversation and one mentions her ‘rules’ for seeing a movie.
To pass the test a movie must:
Have two women
They must have a conversation
The conversation must be about something other than a man.
Despite the simplicity of the test, numerous major movies fail the test. This includes movies such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows II, baywatch (but like are we surprised about that?), Deadpool 2 and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Although the Bechdel test does fail to measure other important issues and has problems of its own.
The test doesn’t assess the following:
If the women portrayed are complex characters or just serve as a catalyst for male stories. ie. getting pregnant, dying to set up a male protagonists story (American Assassin) or to cause problems for the male protagonist. It doesn’t asses how central and important the females role is towards the plot.
The diversity behind the scenes !! In 2016, the top 50 box office movies were examined and not one have a onset crew consisting of 50% women. (The closet to that number was Bad Moms). ‘The Conjuring 2’, which does pass the Bechdel test, had a 90% male onset crew. WOMEN BEHIND THE SCENES ARE IMPORTANT !!!!
It doesn’t take into account other marginalised groups. This is important because the women who are being portrayed are majority white, cisgender, heterosexual able bodied women. MORE DIVERSE REPRESENTATION PLEASE !!!!
So all in all the Bechdel test isnt really the most effective but it has triggered much needed conversations and the development of other tests. For example, the DuVernay test asses the representation of POC. To pass it, a film must have POC who have fully realised life’s instead of serve as scenery in a white story. Similarly, the Vito Russo test assess the LGBT+ representation. To pass it, a film must have an identifiably LGBT+ character that is not solely or predominantly defined by their sexual orientation or gender identity.
WE NEED TO CONTINUOUSLY HOLD THE FILM INDUSTRY ACCOUNTABLE !!!!
REPRESENTATION MATTERS !!!

What is your take on why Pacey didn’t want Joey to know he was in Boston? He never really explains and isn’t prepared to run into her even though Boston isn’t that big a city. It pains her to see him unexpectedly, which wasn’t his intention. Still I love that she takes a risk and goes to him first. It takes courage to seek out an ex who broke up with you the way he did then left with no word. He has no way of knowing how she feels, but neither does she. And the look on his face when he sees her (sigh) you can tell it meant alot to him too.
This is a super great question and definitely something I've thought about before (side note: I love answering questions like this and giving my opinions, so thank you for asking!), and I completely agree with you about how brave it is of Joey to seek Pacey out, despite knowing that he deliberately didn't tell her that he was in town and I think it speaks wonders to the maturity of Pacey and Joey's relationship where Joey is able to put aside her hurt to go and see him simply because she misses him and wants to see him. It shows how much he means to her, outside of their previous romantic relationship, that she wants to reestablish a connection with him. And I think it's clear that he feels the same way when she does go to see him and it's a big part of the reason that I love that scene so much.
As for why I think Pacey doesn't want Joey to know, I'm sure there a few reasons. I think for one, Pacey didn't want to immediately jump back into that part of his life. I think he liked having a life outside of his friends from high school and I'm sure after everything he went through mentally and emotionally throughout s4, it was nice for him to be on his own and separate for everyone else. But, I also think that Pacey wanted to let Joey grow on her own, without him. A big part of the reason that Pacey broke up with Joey in the first place was because he felt like he was holding her back. He believed that if he stayed in her life that he would be a detriment to her future, even though Joey herself never believed that, I can imagine that Pacey struggled to let go of that insecurity. I think it's clear he still cares about Joey, as evidenced by him asking Jen about her in 5x01, but I think based on his actions at the end of s4, that he thinks he's doing her a favor by letting her live her life without him.
Basically, I think he's trying to give her space, and I think he probably intended to tell her eventually that he was there, but he didn't want to intrude in her life and he wanted a chance to live his own life as well. I doubt it was ever because of any kind of malicious reason, like he didn't want to see her at all (like Joey herself initially believed), and more of Pacey doing what he did in s4, which is remove himself from Joey's life because he believed it was what was best for her (even if that's not the truth).
#answered#bechdeltester#thanks for asking!#i find s5/s6 paceyjoey SO fascinating to talk about#because i feel like their dynamic is so underrated in these seasons especially in s5#so i love answering questions#so thanks for the ask!
