beetee latier came up with one singular plan ever to defeat the hunger games and canonically tried to make it work TWICE despite the fact that it literally blew up in his face the first time.
this officially makes him the world’s most accurate fictional scientist because he HAS a favorite hypothesis that he IS going to make sure works even if it fucking kills him

honestly, nobody talks about how terrifying beetee is. this brilliant man who won the games by setting up an electric trap and spent his adult life creating more and more traps for the rebels, although not physically a danger like brutus, he is the scariest and most deadly victor i think we’ve met. he somehow seems mentally intact too, which means all his contraptions are made with their full purpose to kill and maim on a sound mind.
he was never a character who really stood out to me in that way before, but this current reread i’m on before sotr has really shed some new light on him, and it feels like opening a whole new door into a perspective i hadn’t given much thought to.

"I didn't ask the tributes what they wanted because the answer seemed so obvious. You want to live. But then I realized, there are many desires beyond that. Mine had to do with my district partner. Protecting him." - Mags Flanagan, victor from District 4.
"I remember I didn't want to die at night. I didn't want to die in darkness. The thought terrified me." - Wiress, victor from District 3
“That’s funny. I was reaped the day you were born.” - Beetee Latier, victor from District 3.

Anyway everything about Ampert’s story made me cry so hard. Absolutely heartbreaking. Like he’s Beetee’s son and was only reaped to punish his dad. And they made Beetee mentor his own son to certain death. A death that turned out to be incredibly brutal, terrifying and painful. Eaten alive by carnivorous squirrels until there was literally nothing left but bones. I cried so fucking hard at that scene.
Like obvi I knew he was gonna die, but this was a special kind of horrible. Poor Beetee in the Capitol and his pregnant wife back home, probably alone, having to watch their 12 year old child eaten alive by mutts

Suzanne Collins mind fascinates me because what do you mean the woman that wrote Ampert's death scene also worked for Nickelodeon and also was a head writer for Clifford's Puppy Days

I'm wondering if during catching fire, beetee, mags, and wiress came to haymitch and asked about Katniss, seeing if she could be their next attempt at rebellion in the arena. He was probably so worried that she'd lose everyone if she did this, just like he did. Maybe he told them they would have to ask her, it wasn't his choice. Only for her to immediately go and demand those same victors as her team. "Of course you do"

Sunrise on the reaping was absolutely insane.
Because wdym Beetee had to watch his son get reaped, had to mentor him even in the training rooms where mentors don’t usually go, had to entrust him with this plan to destroy the arena only for it to barely do any damage and wind up being what killed him, and had to watch as the flesh from his son’s bones was torn off by mutts. Haymitch’s desperate attempts to save Ampert from a painful death did nothing. Oh, and Beetee and his wife have another baby on the way.
Did he have to spend the next 18 years of his life trying to ‘behave’ so they don’t kill his baby again like they killed Ampert. Unable to largely help with any rebellious efforts because he couldn’t lose another child.
Only for him to be sent back into the arena, sure he will die for the rebel’s cause. When he makes it out, he is either separated from his family, or maybe they’re already gone, taken from him and killed too as punishment for something else. Years of behaving may not have ever mattered in the end, because his family was doomed if he stepped out of line. And he had to live through his punishments again and again.

Ampert just seems so positive during training though? Not that I think he doesn’t know this is an execution- you have to know your chances of winning arent good. But his dad was able to win. Why couldn’t he?
And of course the answer is because his dad was able to win.

At the end of Sunrise on the Reaping, Beetee's wife is pregnant -> if the child survived, they would have been 23 at the time of Katniss' games, and 24 at the time of the third Quarter Quell -> the child would only be eight years older than Katniss herself -> if Beetee's kid was reaped, Katniss would plausibly have been old enough to remember it -> in the trilogy, there is no mention of Beetee having any children, but Katniss does mention that the children of Victors tend to end up in the arena, so she likely witnessed this in at least one Hunger Games -> that kid definitely died in the Hunger Games as further punishment for Beetee

"Looking at him, I can’t help thinking that all the little ones seem to end up with me. Louella. Lou Lou. Ampert. I can’t keep a one of them safe. Why do they flock to me?"
read this and realised this is how it went on forever for haymitch- new year, new tributes, fresh faces expecting their mentor would teach them how to survive and win.
haymitch, oh, haymitch.

there is something just so funny about the fact that beetee had one (1) plan to disrupt the games and then it didn't work. but 25 years later he rocks up to the hunger games like "okay. so. we have to break the arena. but THIS TIME it's gonna WORK." and then it did. icon.

I just need to know if every year the Hunger Games were a knock-down-drag-out between the district kids and President Snow. Bro’s literally spending his entire life beefing with children.
