I've seen posts going around claiming that petting animals is basically tricking them into thinking they're being groomed, and it's bugging me because, like, there's no trickery afoot. Petting and scritching are grooming activities. They help to dislodge loose fur and foreign objects and more evenly distribute protective oils, among other things. Primates are social groomers, and the human impulse to scritch is the legacy of our primate ancestors. We see an animal we like, even a dangerous one, and the monkey brain says "groom that thing".

Really cool write up that links to the original paper that just came out this year (2025)!
This is a really cool example of foraging innovation.

if you can stomach it i would recommend watching the body cam footage of the sonya massey killing, i'll try to describe it but it's hardly possible. you can't truly understand the type of extreme, completely volatile aggression that happens with cops if you haven't seen it, and it's captured here very harrowingly.
several officers are in her house, calmly talking with her about her id and vehicle papers for some time. it's routine administrative stuff, no acute danger or stress whatsoever. one of them tells her to take her pot off the stove, remarking that they don't need a fire in the house now, she walks over into the kitchen and complies. he suddenly backs off towards the front door despite already being several feet away. she asks him where he's going, he says "away from your hot, steaming water." she repeats "my hot, steamin' water?" in an amused tone. then adds "i rebuke you in the name of jesus," in a similar tone while pouring the water down the sink. the atmosphere is completely calm, you might even say amiable.
she's at this point still separated from the cops by her kitchen aisle and several feet of additional distance. the cop prompts her to repeat what she said, she repeats her reply about rebuking him in the name of jesus [edit: i didn't phrase this right in the original post; this phrase is not really a joke but rather used similarly to 'perish the thought'- ie rebuking his implication that she would harm them]. she doesn't even realise there's been a complete 180 in his head. he goes "you better fucking not, i will shoot you in your fucking face," she's stunned by the sudden abusive language for half a second, immediately he draws his gun directly at her head, she gets out a panicked "sorry!" and ducks behind the aisle, he rounds the corner into the kitchen specifically to advance right next to her, immediately fires 3 shots at her head from above at minimal distance. she's dead where she stood, or cowered rather, by the sink in her nightgown.
after a few seconds you hear the click of him turning on his body cam, saying "she came at me with a pot of boiling water." for the recording. he also nonchalantly tells his partner there's no need to get a med kit because it was a headshot. it's one of the most clear cut cases ever and it's fully recorded only because his partner did already have the body cam on throughout.

What is Psychopharmacology?
Tumblr media
The Basics:
Psychopharmacology is the study of how medicines impact the brain and resulting emotional and behavioral responses. Though medicinal practices of unique nature are woven into the histories of various cultural backgrounds, the study and implementation of more formal intervention became a part of the medical model as we know it today in the 1800s. At its roots and in the present day, psychopharmacology rests on the assumption that mental illness is attributed at least in part to a biological disturbance. In light of this, the use of medications aims either to alleviate presently experienced symptoms or deter recurrence or relapse of previously experienced symptoms through impacting the neurotransmitter systems and chemical imbalances in the brain. The study and implementation of this targeted intervention has grown immensely, now effectively treating a plethora of mental pathologies, including depression, anxiety, ADHD and countless others.
From Controversy to Collaboration:
Throughout the history of mental health, professionals have debated whether the best approach to treatment is medicinal or therapeutic intervention given the extensive research in support of each. Factors such as timeliness, efficacy, and accessibility among others have played into these complex discussions. Though treatment preferences and perspectives had previously divided mental health providers, it is widely recognized today that an either-or approach does not often address the complexities, both biological and pathological, that make up an individual’s experiences and struggles. As such, researchers recommend that an integrative approach through a multidisciplinary team can increase positive results in the treatment of many mental health cases.
When an individual is struggling, it is recommended that they reach out to a medical professional or mental health service provider to explore the appropriateness of an integrative medicinal and therapeutic treatment approach. Feel free to reach out to Behavioral Health Clinic today or speak with your current BHC provider to discuss any questions you may have related to general psychopharmacology or more specifically how it may positively impact your journey!

Since the OP made their post unrebloggable (and blocked me. Both actions they are well in with their right to do)
I'm going to make my response it's own post because I think the point is important
-
As someone who is autistic and has BPD and CPTSD and loads of trauma yes you sometimes need to change how you interact with others to keep people around
When I was 13 I hit the few friends I had when I was angry
I had to change that in order to keep those friendships
When I was in my early 20s if I was losing an disagreement with my husband I would threaten to kill myself. My husband told me it hurt him and was cruel and manipulative behaviour, because it was.
So I worked hard to change that to keep my relationship
It's easy to say "I shouldn't have to change for others" and that's true to an extent. You shouldn't change your interests or passions or dim your light. And you should have space to be imperfect and flawed and not have to pretend your ugly bits aren't real. But if something you are doing it causing other people harm you kinda need to change that.
That's called "living in a society"
People adapt to each other and make space for each other in their lives. You adapt to them and they adapt to you
You start being more diligent about throwing away the empty toilet roll because it really bothers them. They start warning you before they run the blender because you hate loud noises
I stopped threatening to kill myself because I was mad I was losing an argument and my husband stopped being so vocally judgemental amount media he personally dislikes
There is a certain type of person who heard the phrase "your emotions are valid" and took that to mean "my emotional reactions and my behaviour are always objectively correct because my emotions are valid and if you have an emotional response or react to what I'm doing negatively then you are wrong and you can't be hurt because my emotions are valid"
And that's a recipe for disaster
Your emotions are valid to feel. They are how you feel and there are reasons you feel the way you do
However, your reactions and behaviour are something you can learn to control and can be irrational
We live in a society and we as people change each other as we interact and that isn't necessarily a bad thing
