Right now wondering pre-season 1, how much Blaine had an actual plan/hit list/wishlist of people he wanted infect and how much he just went man about town, scratching/sleeping with people.
Like...how much was planning and how much was power trip.

As quite a few Presidents were Secretaries of State and so many politicians vied for the position, when and why did that stop being the "gateway" to the Presidency?
That is a really good question.
You're correct that being Secretary of State was seemingly a stepping-stone to the Presidency at one point early in American history. Five of the first eight Presidents were Secretary of State prior to being elected President (Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams, and Van Buren). Madison, Monroe, and John Quincy Adams were elected President directly from the State Department. But James Buchanan was the last President who had served as Secretary of State.
I think that one of the reasons that being Secretary of State was, as you said, a "gateway" to the Presidency in the early years of the republic was because it was one of the few positions in government that built obvious foreign policy experience for the holders of that job at a time when the country was still a pretty isolated, insular nation. The Secretary of State is basically the American version of a foreign minister, of course, but because it was the premiere Cabinet post (and still is), the Secretary of State often had higher name recognition nationally than anyone in government other than the President at a time when the Vice Presidency was an afterthought with very little influence. From the beginning of the federal government, the State Department was a very important part of the Executive Branch, so the early Secretaries of State also gained valuable administrative experience which only helped their cause when it came to running for President.
I think the reason that Secretaries of State stopped being viable candidates for President is because the the growth of the country meant that their were more-and-more qualified candidates who had gained the foreign policy or administrative experience through other means. The country started turning to military leaders and Governors, as well as candidates with more significant Congressional experience than was possible at the early stage of American history when Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and J.Q. Adams were going from the State Department to the White House. After Buchanan's election, not only were there no other Secretaries of State elected President, but very few were even nominated. James G. Blaine briefly served as Secretary of State in 1881 until a few months after President Garfield died in office and was the Republican Presidential nominee in 1884 (he served as Secretary of State again from 1889-1892), but since then, the only major party Presidential nominee who had previously served as Secretary of State was Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State from 2009-2013) in 2016.
In fact, the reverse has been true more frequently in recent history. Since 1884, four major party nominees for President have served as Secretary of State AFTER losing Presidential elections. Blaine lost the 1884 election and served as President Harrison's Secretary of State from 1889-1892 (again, that was his second stint at the State Department after his brief 1881 service). William Jennings Bryan was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for President in 1896, 1900, and 1908, and went on to serve as President Wilson's first Secretary of State (1913-1915). Charles Evans Hughes was the Democratic nominee in 1916 and lost to Wilson, but went on to serve as Secretary of State under Presidents Harding and Coolidge (1921-1925). And John Kerry was the Democratic nominee in 2004 and later served as President Obama's second Secretary of State (2013-2017).
It's really difficult today for any Cabinet member to be elected directly to the Presidency (or even get close to the nomination -- just ask Julián Castro about his 2020 campaign). While there is no job that can truly prepare someone for the modern Presidency, Governors tend to be in a better position than Cabinet secretaries or members of Congress. Only four incumbent members of Congress have been elected directly to the Presidency -- James Garfield (1880), Warren G. Harding (1920), John F. Kennedy (1960), and Barack Obama (2008). And Garfield is the only sitting member of the House of Representatives to have been elected President. While the position of Secretary of State remains the prime Cabinet post in the United States, the days of the Cabinet being the gateway to the Presidency seem to have gone away with powdered wigs and shoe buckles.

As I was saying earlier….
The closest thing I have gotten to an actual Central City was mostly centered around Portland, Oregon where the show was shot or in Kansas City, Missouri where it seems like it was indicated in the comics (feel free to correct me here). I went online on websites for the occupations of both Iris and Barry’s jobs along with some of their friends and family as well. We don’t know how much revenue Fake Wells (Eobard Thawne) has made off the real Wells life so it would be a safe bet that he is some multi-millionaire.
No, I will not be including Chuck or Allegra’s salaries into this because something in my suspicions is saying that Barry wouldn’t make them help out with the cost, especially with them being recently new members of Team Flash. Another thing, he would also let Cisco transfer out of paying once he started working for ARGUS. Also, I am not going to include Ronnie, Frost, or Blaine in this.
Now this is out of the way we can start looking at how much they would’ve made yearly and averagely. We are going to be starting Oregon, Missouri, then other parties.
Portland, Oregon salaries:
Barry > 42,000 - 84,000/yearly
job: Crime Scene Investigator
63,000 average
Iris > 49,000 - 77,000/yearly
job: Reporter
63,000 average
Caitlin > 55,000 - 140,000/yearly
Biomedical Engineer (Bio-engineer)
97,500 average
Cisco > 95,000 - 150,000/yearly
previous job: Mechanical Engineer
122,500 average
Cecile > 150,000 - 240,000/yearly
job: District Attorney/Lawyer
195,000 average
Joe > 82,000 - 200,000/yearly
previous job: Detective/Police Captain
141,000 average
TOTAL: $97,417
Kansas City, Missouri salaries:
Barry > 42,000 - 78,000/yearly
job: Crime Scene Investigator
58,500 average
Iris > 52,000 - 94,000/yearly
job: Reporter
73,000 average
Caitlin > 75,000 - 130,000/yearly
Biomedical Engineer (Bio-engineer)
102,500 average
Cisco > 89,000 - 140,000/yearly
previous job: Mechanical Engineer
114,500 average
Cecile > 140,000 - 220,000/yearly
job: District Attorney/Lawyer
180,000 average
Joe > 66,000 - 190,000/yearly
previous job: Detective/Police Captain
92,500 average
TOTAL: $103,500
Averages from both salaries:
Barry > $60,750
Iris > $68,000
Caitlin > $100,000
Cisco > $118,500
Cecile > $187,500
Joe > $116,750
Total > $100,458
Other party members:
Oliver Queen, Ray Palmer, possible city funds (for Barry even though it’s highly unlikely), Eobard’s estate that he left to Barry once he “died” as Harrison Wells.

Can I please request a story time about James Blaine?
Tumblr media
Who would have thought my life would reach this point? What a wild ride this year has been.
Unfortunately, I don't have much of a story to tell about James G. Blaine, because I only know him as a side character in the James Garfield story.
What I do know is:
He was one of James Garfield's best friends. They both served in the U.S. House of Representatives for a long time, and Blaine eventually became a senator.
He was called "the Magnetic Man from Maine" because of his excellence as an orator.
He was a leader in the Half-Breed faction of the Republican Party that (among other things) pushed for civil service reform.
He once gave a speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives calling out Roscoe Conkling (the man who would later be such a thorn in Garfield's side) as a slimy villain. Conkling considered him his archenemy after that, and did whatever he could to thwart his political ambitions.
Blaine tried to become the Republican nominee for president several times, and Garfield thought his obsession with the presidency had warped his principles.
Lucretia Garfield relied on his wife, with her greater knowledge of the Washington social scene, to help her with her social duties as First Lady.
James Garfield made him his Secretary of State, but only on the condition that he promise never to try to run for president again.
(Blaine later became the Republican candidate in the 1884 presidential election and lost to Grover Cleveland.)
He was one of only two Secretaries of State to serve under three separate presidents (Garfield, Arthur, and Harrison).
He was present when James Garfield was shot and was noted for keeping his head during the crisis.
Supposedly (this comes from the 1881 McClure book's account of the assassination), when Blaine was at the president's bedside later, "the President placed his arm about him, as nearly as he could, and said: "How I love you!" It was not until then that Blaine, the strong man, broke down. [...] The Secretary of State soon retired, for he did not wish to excite the wounded man by an exhibition of emotion."

Blood and Silicon Ep 4 recap: Cinnamon Apples & Files
[except it’s copy/pasted from me rambling to my friend about the game/ slightly edited to avoid Character Spoilers]
Ok ok so the coterie all gets in the car after the Torpor Quest (i forget if i told u that?? We needed info on harrison and the gangs, and the guy who could give us the information told us to torpor some vamps for him). While Blake refuels his car (and laments over gas prices), Leo asks Pauline if the Cobweb can show people visions (it can), and tells her about his Black Sun vision. She doesn't know what the crown symbol represents, but the mask and mirror are nosferatu and malks respectively. Blake returns. Leo is still on edge around him and kinda refuses to talk to him, but accepts the cinnamon-apple gum he offers. We head back to Victor's place, the guy who has the info, and tell him we did the job. Victor asks if there was anything of importance the vamps had, and Pauline slides him the photo we grabbed (a masked figure standing in front of a bank), and Victor like. Panics. He asks who had it (the nosferatu vamp did) and if we've all seen it, and he's typing away at his computer. He grabs the photo, puts it in an envelope, and as he's writing a note on a post-it he asks Pauline for her clan. She tells him: Malkavian. He asks if she can make people forget things, and tells her to erase his memory of the past few minutes, dont ask why. She does. Leo is on edge now. Victor blinks, looks at the note he wrote for himself, and tells us to stay here as he grabs the envelope with the photo inside and leaves. Leo asks Pauline if she's done that to either of them before. She says she values their autonomy, and Blake asks if Leo got anything from the photo; Leo says he got the name of the bank in the background- Flagstar Bank.
Victor returns and tells us to not to look into the photo, since hey theres a reason those two were meant to be torpored. He hands us the documents about Harrison and the gangs. Before we leave, Leo asks Victor if he can investigate a man named Jeremiah, providing him with what little information he has in order to help him get info. Blake and Pauline overhear this; Blake casts a glance at Leo with some kind of expression (empathy? Sadness??), but denies he did so when Leo asks what it was about. Coupled with his worries about the Dominate, and what happened with Blake earlier in the night, Leo's a bit frustrated that Blake is denying this. The coterie heads out. We then roleplay the entire sequence of driving up to Wendy's and ordering food. So then we head to the Asylum, where Pauline gives her ghoul Sebastian the food he wanted [Wendy's Quest is now complete!], and we introduce ourselves to him. He's a bit creeped out by how cold our hands are. We head to Pauline's office to look over the documents. Harrison's is first. Despite being a Malkavian around 190 years old, not much is known about him before he arrived in san jose in 2000; The first indication of his presence was a letter he wrote to someone named Van.
Harrison introduced himself to important city figures while managing to reveal little about himself, which is impressive. He only claimed a spot called the Haberdasher as his turf until 2008, which was when the Fall of Vienna happened, as well as a Sabbat incursion upon San Jose- he established a base of power due to being incredibly useful in fighting back against the Sabbat with his uncanny predictions of their movements and his counter-attacks. Due to the Sabbat attacks taking out many Tremere and other kindred, Harrison was able to take over the abandoned territory for himself; he wasnt challenged on this due to his age and skill. The Hecata Clan have refused his offer on an alliance. Harrison has recently gifted some territory to some NeoNates: Jose, Blaine, and Perseus (we do not know these characters). Harrison also knows some level of Blood Sorcery. Possibly taught by a Tremere named Asha? Before arriving in San Jose it was confirmed he sired at least 1 person, Macy Andrews, and theres no evidence she's ever entered the city. In 2010 he sired Tony Pollocks, who is claimed to have met his final death outside San Jose in 2018. When reading this document, Leo zoned out– he receives a vision that I’m unable to elaborate on due to spoilers.
As for the gangs, a member named Higinio offered this information to Victor: The reason the Ashen Roses and Diablos Descendants split is reported as being stupid, over resource management and such, and the informant thinks they should get back together. (Van, who's mentioned here as well, thinks there's more to why they split.) The Ashen Roses have been making a lot of money dealing with an interesting strain of weed; the effects arent that special, but it explains the uptick in criminal activity. While the Roses are stepping up their drug game, the Diablos are taking a step back, which is odd, since Vic was expecting them to ramp it up a bit. Victor tried to learn more about their goals, but was met with anarch babble from the informant about overthrowing elders- he notes they seem young, and wonders if any of the gang members were sired during the Sabbat Incursion. The gang's more immediate goals are strengthening their current territory, and theyre decently armed. Rae (the leader of Diablo) has a bar frequently visited by various ghouls and kindred at regular hours; Victor notes theyre not good at hiding, and says the Diablos owe the Nosferatu a boon, since the Nos covered them from some vampire hunters earlier.
Pauline asks about the Sabbat; Blake says they're idiots and has had some run-ins with them before, and theyre not really his kind of scene. Pauline and Blake discuss Harrison's blood sorcery for a moment, and suggest the Hecata might be good allies if we go against Harrison, i think? (I myself was still preoccupied figuring out the vision Leo received) Blake notices Leo's zoned out, and asks if he needs blood. Pauline sends someone over for him to drink from but Leo is like?? Kind of uncomfortable feeding from someone awake, it's this whole thing. Blake pretty much goes "hm well if you're not gonna have any can i feed instead" At this point the game stops, because I got confused over the contents of the documents and needed them explained to me, and also we were running out of time lol
[Leo has a lot to think about.]

Hi Frank can you tell be a cool fact about American history from the years 1879 to 1967?
OK here we go. All of this was, to my surprise, really true.
1879: Theodore Roosevelt, who had never held political office, and who was never nominated in a primary election, is elected President. This is an unusual situation, not repeated until George W. Bush in 2000, the last time an incumbent was elected in this way. The Republican Party is in disarray for years afterwards, and it was not until 1920 that this election was finally decided in favor of a Republican.
1883: James Garfield is shot by an assassin and dies in office. Garfield did not actually win the presidency, but he had made the run for it and been close, so everyone considers him to be the Republican candidate. It was a close race, but the Republican candidate carried just about all the New England states.
1885: Grover Cleveland is president. This is not a real thing. No one remembers this event, no one can even recall the name of Cleveland's Vice President, and there was in fact no Vice President elected at this time, as he had died years earlier. Cleveland won the 1884 Presidential election for his own party, but did not run for another term, and thus did not win the nomination.
1887: Benjamin Harrison is assassinated and dies in office. He did not win the 1884 Presidential election, and, because the Republican candidate, James G. Blaine, had died during the campaign and thus the party could not select a replacement candidate, the election went to a head-to-head popular vote between Blaine and Democrat Grover Cleveland. Blaine won by one electoral vote.
1889: Benjamin Harrison is assassinated by the wife of a personal enemy.
1893: Grover Cleveland is "elected" as a third-party candidate, and so is not president. There is, technically, a president who was never president. (He's "President-elect" Cleveland; he was President-elect at the time of his assassination!)
1895: William McKinley is nominated for a third time, at a time when he was not actually an incumbent President.
1897: William McKinley is assassinated by an anarchist in Buffalo. The McKinley Tariff was passed in March 1894, shortly before McKinley's presidential campaign began. He would have been the first US President to die in office if he had lived, so the new President-elect is called Theodore Roosevelt, because his name starts with "T" and the Republican party (as at the time) was very protective of its incumbent President-elects.
1901: Teddy Roosevelt is elected President. This is the first of many elections in which the incumbent Republican is elected, and it is the first of the post-Roosevelt era. The party was still in disarray at this time, and it was not until the Republican candidate in the next election, Herbert Hoover, was elected President in 1928 that there would be no Republican President until Gerald Ford in 1974.
1907: Theodore Roosevelt is re-elected, as is William Taft, who was another one of his cabinet appointees.
1911: William Taft, one of the few members of President Roosevelt's cabinet who did not live to see his own inauguration, is elected President.
1917: Woodrow Wilson is elected President, not by election, but because he is nominated for President in the 1912 convention and many delegates did not attend.
1918: Woodrow Wilson is elected President a second time, after the convention which nominated him was held in the midst of a global flu epidemic.
1919: Warren G. Harding is elected president.
1920: Warren G. Harding is elected President a third time, after the Republicans split their national vote and the Democrats win the electoral college vote.
1921: Warren G. Harding is re-elected, his nomination being won by the convention held in the middle of the Russian Revolution.
1923: Calvin Coolidge is elected President for the first of five times. He is re-elected in 1928, the year of the Wall Street crash, and he is nominated the year after, with his nomination won in a convention held the year after, with the convention held in the midst of a Great Depression. He was nominated in the midst of the depression because that was the year Coolidge was "born," meaning he lived for his entire life, and then died of a heart attack before his term was over. He had a heart attack at age 58 and was elected President at age 62.
(Yes, Coolidge was 58 when the Republicans nominated him, and his heart attack killed him. The Republicans wanted to nominate him as a formality, but he hadn't been in office for any long time and in fact died the very next day. He was not actually elected, since there was no time between the nomination and his death in office to hold a presidential election. The Republican National Committee met with Coolidge's doctor, who said "Coolidge will die if they do not nominate him by noon" and the party nominated him in his place.)
1929: Herbert Hoover is elected in a hard-fought primary. (Hoover's father was an obscure member of a political dynasty who never won anything except the House seat he was representing when he died, and Hoover himself was a businessman and governor with no political experience of any kind.)
1935: Franklin Roosevelt is elected in a hard-fought primary, the only instance so far when a presidential candidate was elected in this way.

Choices LI Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @jerzwriter! I'm not going to do every Choices story I've played bc there's so many, but I'll do most of them (not including single LI books)! If there are any specific books you want to know about lmk. Also, I'm putting a 💎 next to the ones I played with diamonds! Not tagging anyone because I think most people have been tagged already, but if you haven't then take this as your sign to do it too ❤️
A Courtesan of Rome: Cassisus Longinus
Across the Void: Sol w/f!MC
America's Most Eligible 💎: tbh I've replayed this with every, single LI, but the first time I played I romanced Adam McIntyre (Handsome Stranger) with a m!MC; I wish Carson was an LI though! And I plan on writing for him with a f!MC eventually (this was actually the idea that got me into writing Choices fanfic)
Baby Bump: "Clint" Covington, although I renamed him Jesse
Desire & Decorum: Annabelle Parsons 😍
Distant Shores: Edward Mortemer w/m!MC
Foreign Affairs: m!Blaine Hayes w/nb!MC
High School Story 💎: Michael Harrison; The first time I played with a f!MC then I replayed with a m!MC; I also did a replay with a f!MC romancing Emma Hawkins
Laws of Attraction: Aislinn Tanaka w/m!MC, but might switch to f!MC for Book 2
Open Heart 💎: Ethan Ramsey (obvi) w/m!MC then w/f!MC
Perfect Match: Damien Nazario, f!"Hayden" Young (renamed Maya), & Sloane Washington w/f!MC
Red Carpet Diaries 💎: Thomas Hunt, my beloved 😍
Rules of Engagement: "Leo" Rys renamed Lysander (bc I had just seen A Midsummer Night's Dream before I played it lol)
Save the Date: Lindsay Basu
Wake the Dead 💎: Troy Hassan & Shannon Fox w/f!MC

Note
Since someone else asked a question about presidential facial hair, I noticed in some pictures Benjamin Harrison had a longer, somewhat stringier beard, while in other pictures, his beard seemed shorter. When were those times in relation to his presidency?
I'm not 100% sure on Benjamin Harrison. He definitely had a longer beard when he was younger and serving as a General during the Civil War, but there are photos of him with longer and shorter beards when he was an older man.
This is a photo of Harrison being sworn in as President in 1889, but you can't really tell how long his beard is at that time because he's bundled up from the weather (he obviously learned a lesson from his grandfather's fatal mistake at the 1841 inauguration):
Tumblr media
He definitely had a shorter beard in the following photo, which also features his Secretary of States James G. Blaine. Blaine resigned due to failing health and died before Harrison's term ended, so the photo is almost certainly during Harrison's Presidency, possibly from 1889:

So, President Harrison did have a shorter beard at least at some point during his time in the White House. I just don't know if he wore different styles throughout his Presidency.
