Commissioner Gordon (New Adventures)

James Gordon continued to serve as commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department well into his old age.  He worked closely with Batman, Batgirl and Robin.  Although he never said anything, it seemed abundantly clear that Gordon was aware that Batman was actually Bruce Wayne and that Batgirl was his own beloved daughter, Barbara.  

At one point, Barbara tried to tell her father about her secretive life as Batgirl but Jim stopped her.  He did not want to hear it.  He knew already and had accepted his daughter’s decisions; yet it needed to remain unspoken.  Despite all the good that Batman and Batgirl had done for the city, regardless of the fact that they had saved countless of lives, vigilantism was nonetheless against the law.  

Ultimately, Barbara would forgo her role as Batgirl and followed in her father’s path in becoming a police officer.  Indeed she would eventually becoming commissioner herself.  

Actor Bob Hastings provided the voice of Jim Gordon with the commissioner first appearing in the second episode of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘On Leather Wings.’

In Memory of Bob Hastings

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of actor Bob Hastings.

Bob is best remembered for his many film and TV roles, most famously as Lt. Elroy Carpenter in McHale's Navy.

He was also lent his voice to animation and will be remembered as the voice of Commissioner James Gordon in ''Batman the Animated Series'' and other works as part of the DC Animated Universe.

Bob Hastings passed away at the age of 89.

He'll be forever missed but never forgotten.

James ‘Jim’ Gordon was a sterling, incorruptible officer of the law greatly respected by his fellow officers and city officials.  He was promoted to Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department around the time that The Batman became active in the city.  Unlike many at the department, Gordon trusted Batman and saw the Caped Crusader as an asset as opposed to a menace.   There were many cases that were beyond the abilities of the police and Gordon had the good sense to collaborate with Batman.  This put him at odds with some of his colleagues, those who felt a reliance on Batman encouraged vigilantism and made the department look bad.  Yet Gordon was only interested in justice and the safeguarding of the city.

Never one to shy away from the action, Gordon has been involved in numerous perilous situations.  He was kidnapped by The Joker and later adducted by the malevolent artificial intelligence known as H.A.R.D.A.C.  And he was kidnaped once more by the villainous Lock-Up and nearly blown up at a celebratory dinner honoring his service to the city.  Fortunately, the steadfast commissioner was rescued in each of these occasions by Batman.  

Deputy Police Commissioner Gil Mason had Gordon arrested when he found evidence that Gordon was taking bribes from the mobster, Rupert Thorne.  With the aide of the new heroine, Batgirl, Batman and Robin were able to clear Gordon’s name and Mason was ultimately exposed as a criminal in league with the villainous Two-Face.  

Gordon’s dedication to the city was second only to his love for his daughter, Barbara.  Barbara would go on to become a crimefighter in her own right, first as the masked vigilante known as Batgirl and later as a police officer.  Indeed Barbara would eventually also become police commissioner of Gotham City. 

Gordon was critically injured during a botched raid on the violent gangster, Jimmy Peake.  Felled by an errant bullet, Gordon was rushed to the hospital and it was uncertain whether or not he would pull through.  Thankfully, Gordon made a full recovery and Peake was apprehended by Batman.  It was not long at all before Jim Gordon was back in the office giving his all to keep the streets of Gotham safe.

mir fiel neulich auf, daß kelly in high strung scheinbar nicht wusste, daß peter lys und yan de kerk kennt, obwohl sie (zumindest im hörspiel) in der einzigen folge, in der die beiden zusammen auftreten, die beiden ja auch kennenlernt. und peter macht ja noch mal explizit, daß er die beiden von dem fall mit den computerviren kennt.

das lässt sich bestimmt auflösen, wenn man das buch liest, aber ich finde die vorstellung sehr ansprechend, daß peter einfach zwei freundinnen hatte, die beide kelly hießen. es würde auch ganz gut dazu passen, daß bob mindestens zwei elizabeths gedatet hat: eine "nur mal ganz kurz" und eine "seit vier jahren".
