Everything’s terrifying in the dark
"Everything's terrifying in the dark", a review of 'Catch me a killer', a new fact-based series on Showmax, featuring Charlotte Hope.
ON the beat: Retired FBI investigator Robert Ressler (Sean Cameron Michael) with profiler Micki Pistorius (Charlotte Hope) in a scene from Showmax’s Catch Me a Killer. SHE’S TOUGH. SHE’S wise. She has everything it takes to be conversant and earn respect in the uncouth macho South African man’s world that constituted the SA Police Service in the mid-1990s. She also has what it takes to skip the…

『 “The roads are flooded. Looks like you’re stuck with me.” 』 sent by @vikasgarden
Tumblr media
"Was zum Teufel machen Sie allein hier draußen?"

YOON POTS FIRST CAREER GOAL AS WOLF PACK BEAT BRUINS 5-2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack PROVIDENCE, RI—The Hartford Wolf Pack scored five goals on Sunday afternoon for the first time since February 2nd, claiming a 5-2 victory over the Providence Bruins at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. The win snapped the Bruins' five-game winning streak and gave the Wolf Pack points in five of their last six games (3-1-1-1). The Wolf Pack came up empty-handed on their first powerplay of the night but quickly struck five-on-five to extend the lead to 3-1 moments after it expired. Michael Callahan's shot evaded Dylan Garand and rocketed into the neutral zone, where Brett Berard found the puck. Berard blazed into the offensive zone on the left-wing side and fired a shot that beat Brandon Bussi for his team-leading 19th goal of the season at 6:02 of the second period. The tally moved Berard into a tie for third in the AHL in goals among rookies, which was his team-leading seventh game-winning goal. The Wolf Pack needed just 43 seconds to open the scoring this afternoon, as Karl Henriksson returned to the lineup in style with his ninth goal of the season. Henriksson corralled a loose puck along the right-wing boards in the offensive zone and curled it into the slot. The second-year center flung a shot to the net that clipped Brandon Bussi and found the back of the net. The goal was Hartford's fastest to start a game on the road this season. Ian Mitchell drew the Bruins even at 6:17, firing a shot into traffic for his fourth goal of the season. The puck snuck past Garand's glove, who was screened by numerous bodies from both sides. Bryan Yoon restored the Wolf Pack's lead just 1:58 into the second period, blasting his first career AHL goal by Bussi. Cameron Hillis dropped a pass from the right-wing boards to the top of the zone, where Yoon loaded up and fired into traffic. Bussi never saw the puck, giving Yoon his first point in his ninth AHL contest. Berard's goal at 6:02 made it 3-1 Wolf Pack. It was his first goal back in his hometown of Providence, where he also played college hockey as a member of the Providence College Friars. Anthony Richard drew the Bruins within a goal at 5:39 of the third period, potting his 20th marker of the season. Richard danced into the Wolf Pack zone before making a terrific individual effort that ended with a shot over Garand's blocker. Garand was perfect from there, however, as the Wolf Pack stymied the Bruin attack in the final 14 minutes of the game. Anton Blidh made a terrific effort, hitting the empty net from the neutral zone at 17:39 to effectively end the intrigue. Turner Elson also hit the empty net for good measure at 18:33, potting his fifth goal of the season. The win evens the season series, as both teams have won four times in the first eight meetings. The Pack is back at the XL Center on Friday night when the Bruins come to town for the final time this season. The puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. Join us for $2 drafts and $2 hot dogs until the end of the first intermission! Additionally, help us welcome back Wolf Pack legend P.J. Stock! The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a P.J. Stock bobblehead courtesy of Xfinity. So, today the Letters from Watson discord server and I discovered that there is a gloriously animated Warner Brothers Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Holmes and Watson have such nice character designs and they're so fluid, so much squash and stretch!
Tumblr media
They're voiced by John Rhys-Davies and Michael York, and have such sweet little interactions with each other.
Tumblr media
There are so many fun Easter eggs for a fan - references to characters from the stories, a tailor called Brett Jeremy, they visit the Rathbone Inn, and the business of someone called Bruce Nigel
Tumblr media
There are some really fun chase scenes and action sequences!
Tumblr media
.... are you sensing a big BUT coming?
BUT.
Yeah it's one of those weird Tom and Jerry movies.
Tumblr media
Also the plot, and I cannot emphasise this enough, makes absolutely no sense. It is utterly INSANE. And Moriarty is able to do this.
Tumblr media
Wild ride all round, tbh.

WEREWOLVES WITHIN - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: IFC Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Newly arrived forest ranger Finn has come to the small town of Beaverfield to look into the divisions that have risen in the community over a proposed pipeline. When a snowstorm traps its residents together inside the local inn it is up to Finn and the local postal worker Cecily to try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community.
REVIEW: WEREWOLVES WITHIN is based on the Ubisoft VR video game in which players discover what characters sitting around the campfire are werewolves. There were other little twists, turns, and elements to the game, but you get the basic idea. Author turned screenwriter, and ex-wife of comic Marc Maron, Mishna Wolff (kind of ironic her last name is Wolff) turns the concept into a cinematic who-done-it comedy with interesting characters and fresh dialogue. It’s a fun setup that harkens back to cinematic comedies like “Clue,” “Murder by Death,” or even “Shaun of the Dead.” She’s discarded most of the game’s elements other than the basic premise that there is a werewolf hiding amongst the group and they’re trying to figure out who it is before anyone else dies.
Director Josh Ruben does an excellent job of capturing the grandeur of this picturesque mountain town and some funny moments. The film focuses more on the comedy than the werewolf, but there are some grisly moments, after all it is a werewolf movie. The big reveal transformation scene is no “The Howling” or “An American Werewolf in London,” but as it is kept mostly in the dark body movement and sound design go a long way to add creepiness to the scene. There are also many creative edits that add a bit of smoke and mirrors to the plot. Ruben does an excellent job of maintaining the film’s energy and delivers a fun, engaging and entertaining view.
The film is a delight to watch largely due to the work of actor Sam Richardson and actress Milana Vayntrub, yes the AT&T spokeswoman from the commercials. When they work together to try and unravel the mystery it turns into this buddy type situation with their unique personal issues and problems. The performances are grounded, but there is also this light and airy element to the performances that make it enjoyable and delightful to watch. I have to admit that I only had a limited awareness of their other work and was mesmerized by their performances here. I was shocked to see the body of work credited to these actors. The rest of the cast does an excellent job creating these characters grounded. They could have easily become these clinched stereotypes that were simply there to serve as victims, but it is an enjoyable ensemble cast.
I never played the Ubisoft VR video game WEREWOLVES WITHIN so I could not tell you if there are any “easter eggs” in the film that involved the game. In a time when I’ve sat through so many Seth Rogan, Danny McBride, James Franco, or any of the sophomoric comedies of the last few years it’s refreshing to watch a film that relies more on the craft and performances than 1that of vulgar and the exploitative elements for  comedy. Director Josh Ruben’s work makes a solid case for my argument that there is a unique parallel between horror and comedy in that it all comes down to the timing. The film has a talented ensemble cast and two stellar leads that make WEREWOLVES WITHIN a howling good time… pun intended!

2019 was hard. It was hard and shitty. It was a year that deserves a quick burial with very little mourning. I lost a lot of people this year and almost lost myself. This year was filled with periods of unemployment, too many interviews, a lot of depression and overwhelming loneliness. To all my friends, thank you for sticking with me through the good times and the bad. You are what got me through it.

ITALIA RICCI, CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY AND JACK TURNER STAR IN ‘LOVE IN WINTERLAND’ A NEW, ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING JANUARY 11 ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
Part of the Network’s Annual “Winterfest” Programming Event
Tumblr media
STUDIO CITY, CA – January 6, 2020 – Italia Ricci (“Designated Survivor”), Chad Michael Murray (“Riverdale”) and Jack Turner (“Stitchers”) star in “Love in Winterland,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, January 11 (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel as part of the network’s annual “Winterfest” programming event.
Alice Wilson (Ricci), a Los Angeles hotel marketing executive, is a finalist on a hugely popular TV dating show who is sent to her snowy Vermont hometown for a final televised date with bachelor Tanner Dylan (Turner). However, upon arriving back home, she encounters her high school sweetheart, Brett (Murray) who now owns the historic inn where Alice, Tanner and the production crew are all staying. When the show producer discovers Brett’s unrequited affection for Alice, she helps stoke their old feelings for each other, creating a love triangle which forces Alice to re-think her choices in life and decide what’s truly important to her.
“Love in Winterland” is produced by Alice Road Productions Ltd. Pat Williams, Neal Dobrofsky, Tippi Dobrofsky, Michael Shepard, Jennifer Davisson, Phillip Watson, Harvey Kahn and Bianca Versteeg serve as executive producers. Charles Cooper is the producer. Pat Williams directed from a script by Neal Dobrofsky and Tippi Dobrofsky.

Los Angeles hotel marketing executive Alice Wilson (Italia Ricci) is a finalist on the hugely popular TV dating show “Happily Ever After,” but seems more concerned about promoting the hotel chain she works for than actually finding love. Nonetheless, bachelor Tanner Dylan (Jack Turner) is smitten by her and chooses Alice for the final round of dates, sending everyone back East to her snowy Vermont hometown, Winterland, to meet Alice’s family and participate in the upcoming Winterland Festival of Lights. Upon arriving in the picturesque town which she left over five years ago, Alice is greeted like a celebrity. But her excitement is quickly tempered when she discovers she, Tanner and the production crew will be staying at the Candlelight Inn, which is now owned and run by her high school sweetheart, Brett (Chad Michael Murray). Despite Alice’s protests to the contrary, it’s obvious there is still some unfinished business between her and Brett. When show producer Lauren (Aliyah O’Brien) picks up on that, she sees an opportunity for drama, enlisting the help of Alice’s mother, Molly (Wanda Cannon) to have Brett drop by the house at every opportunity. Although Alice and Brett keep things friendly at first, they begin to reminisce and old disagreements soon surface. As they rehash the events of their breakup years earlier, they find themselves back to where they left off and each makes it clear they’re ready to move on. Once Tanner arrives in town, Alice refocuses all her attention on him. But when dinner with her family doesn’t go as planned and Brett suddenly shows up again at the family home, Alice makes it clear she is not succumbing to their scheme to keep her home for good. Alice and Tanner continue their date week in the charming town, culminating with their participation in the Winterland Festival’s annual chili cookoff, which Alice has won in years past. However, when Alice sees Brett has entered the competition – and with Helene (Teagan Vincze), her old high school rival, no less – it’s more than she can bear. Her competitive nature kicks in, leading to a chili cookoff “death match” where it’s all about winning and Tanner is almost an afterthought. After the events of the chili cookoff, it becomes obvious to Tanner that Alice’s feelings lie elsewhere and he confronts her at their romantic candlelight dinner, forcing her to re-think her choices in life and decide what’s truly important to her.

UK Games Expo 2019
Another extended UK Games Expo weekend has been and gone in the blink of an eye, so here’s how it went for me!
Once again I was playing host to my friend Brendan LaSalle, author of XCrawl and convention out reach dude for Goodman Games ( who publish Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG ) Brendan arrived on Tuesday fresh from Momo Con in Atlanta so it seemed fair to give him a few hours to recover before fueling him with ale and curry.
On Wednesday we kicked off the trip proper with the obligatory ‘touristing’ at the Battle Of Bosworth Heritage Centre, a local spot for me which is full of photo opportunities, some of which will no doubt show up in forthcoming articles on Goodman’s website!
Tumblr media
On Wednesday evening we headed out to Board & Swords, a relatively new gaming spot in Derby that I’d been meaning to check out for a couple of months.   Brendan ran ‘Hole In The Sky’ his zero level funnel adventure.
Tumblr media
Thursday was setup day at the Expo so we met up with Brett and Alyson who were running the booth to help run some errands for them before heading into Leicester to Bean Gaming, a gorgeous gaming cafe. Sadly the cafe had suffered a break in a couple of weeks ago but Goodman Games were kind enough to provide some raffle prizes for fund raising towards the costs of the damage.
Before the game we met up with Neil (@OldScouserRPing) for a pint and a catch up
Tumblr media
Brendan ran ‘The Inn at Five Points’, this year’s ‘Convention Exclusive’ module for a packed table of nine players.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Friday was day one of the Expo and we had an early start to get to Birmingham  and pick up our GM’s packs before the first games started at 9AM
First up was my Umerican Survival Guide session ‘An Umerican Adventure In Engerlund’  which ran really well.  I’ve tweaked a couple of encounters since I last ran this at Gary Con and really enjoyed playing with a mixed table, some of whom had no experience of DCC - it’s always fun showing off that magic system!  The terrible pun I’ve worked into one of the encounters also received a very satisfying groan!
Tumblr media
I hadn’t scheduled an afternoon game so managed a quick dash around the trade hall where I bumped into Pookie who was chatting with Brett and Al at the Goodman Games booth.
Tumblr media
Friday night’s game was my Dark Trails RPG zero level funnel adventure ‘A Westward Journey’.  Like my Umerica adventure this is still a ‘work in progress’ but I’ve had a couple of decent play test sessions and some really useful feedback, so I was looking forward to running it.   Sadly the session bombed pretty hard, mostly due to poor time management on my part, though there are plot/design issues that I also need to address if I’m going to run the adventure again.  With hindsight I should have hand waved a scene change at the two hour mark to ensure we could at least complete the scenario and show off more of the game mechanics, but doing that felt like a cheat, and consequently I didn’t address it until was too late.  I try to treat every con game as a learning experience, this one more than most, but I’m disappointed that it happened whilst I was trying to promote a game that I’m pretty excited about!
Despite it all Jules got my vote for MVP just for turning up in duster, waistcoat and hat - thanks mate!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saturday morning came around and I’d committed to running a full day of two hour ‘Games On Demand’ sessions for Lloyd.
Tumblr media
Brendan and I had brainstormed a simple Dungeon Crawl Classics scenario to fit the two hour time slots, planned carefully to show off level zero play before boosting characters to level one to demonstrate the higher level DCC mechanics (mighty deeds, luck, magic etc)
Having dropped the ball with time management the previous evening I was worried about having to condense so much into a relatively small time slot and the first session felt shaky to say the least, but  having a table with mixed level of experience helped me get into it.
Tumblr media
Game two on Saturday had a lower overall experience level but I hit my stride with the adventure and I think we may have had a couple of new DCC fans!
Tumblr media
After a lunch break it was great to see some familiar faces from one of my DCC adventures last year - and they brought friends!
Tumblr media
For the final table (who I completely forget to grab a photo with!) I decided to  run ‘Portal Under The Stars’ the classic zero level adventure from the DCC RPG rulebook.  It’s quite a challenge in a two hour slot but we proved that  brand new roleplayers can pick up DCC RPG really quickly!
Games on Demand was a really fun challenge and something I’ll definitely consider taking part in next year, without doubt a highlight of this years Expo for me!
Saturday night was kept free for socialising and once again we (over)indulged in the delights (slow service and horrendous prices!) of the Hilton bar.  I called it a night at 2AM, already regretting signing up to run a 9AM game...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The alarm call came around all to soon and after a subdued breakfast I got setup to run my final game of the expo.  ‘Acting Up in Lankhmar’ is an adventure by Michael Curtis for the soon to be released DCC RPG Lankhmar rules.
I ran what I’d consider to be a pretty accurate ‘literary’ Lankhmar setting (sticking with just three classes (Wizard, Warrior Thief) and the new, but very popular ‘fleeting luck’ mechanics.  It was great to see familiar faces at the table, all of whom brought their ‘A’ game and soon had forgetting my hangover!  Whilst not a complete success for the characters (the adventure ended in a riot!) it was a really fun session and a fantastic high note to end my DCC Judge duties this year!
Tumblr media
In the afternoon I played my only session as a player, taking the role of a Thief on the Purple Planet in Andy’s ‘The Rock Awakens’ game.  Andy ran a really engaging session, the last of six games he ran over the weekend!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the Monday night we squeezed one more gaming session in at The Dice Cup in Nottingham, with enough players for two tables and solid reports from the shop this week that they may need a restock of DCC rulebooks!
Once again the UK Games Expo weekend has flown by and I’m left plotting and planning next years shenanigans.  See you there!

Thanks for your ask!
3. 3 songs that mean something to you
Memory from Cats
I don't know really why but it always touches something inside me when I sing along.
Mary did you know from pentatonix
A christmas song for christians (yes, I'm a christian, not a fundie), I just love the melody
Bye bye Huawei from Arjen Lubach (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUBxVe0j7Ow&list=PLhYOh4j7IrWdnGGxf-RfsFzEOtsH3DBpW&index=29 ) Watch from 11:10
It's a song made to make fun of Huawei and 5G. I love to watch these kind of things. I know this one pretty good.
6. 3 characters that inspire you
I thought those 3 songs would be hard but this might be even harder. Mostly because almost every book that I read is in Dutch so you guys don't know it. So I'll go with mostly movie characters.
Isabel Kelly played by Julia Roberts in Stepmom
It's such a hard role to have. But she really grows into it, grows a bond with the childeren and as a pedagogue that inspires me to grow a bond with every child that I meet. And knowing that it might take a while for them to trust me.
Phil Connors played by Bill Murray in Groundhog day
I think a lot of people know the feeling that sometimes the days look alike. Phil Conners really made something great at the end of the movie of that one day without expecting that it would last. I love to be like that every day. Doing everything you can, the things you love to do, things for others.
Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan played by Emma Stone in The Help
I feel very privleged as a white woman in a western country. I hope I can by like Skeeter and break the patterns, treat others like equel because everybody is.
11. 3 books that you would recommend everyone to read
So this is even harder because I read Dutch writers. But I hope these can be read in English too.
Kleine Rachel (Little Rachel) by Brett Michael Innes
It's a hart breaking story about a brave girl who gives her life for her brothers sake. I garanty you will cry while reading the end.
En Rachel huilde (And Rachel cried) by Brett Michael Innes
Another hart breaking story about a woman who left her daughter to be watch by her boss and her daughter dies while they are wathing her. The girl is already death when the story starts. You get an insight in the grief process of the mother.
Niemandsland (nobody's land)by Guurtje Leguijt
I don't think this will be available in English. But it's a story about a boy who's mom dies after the birth of his sibling. He ends up in youth care and goes trew a lot. I would love to take care of childeren in my home someday who can't live with their parents to give these childeren a better place then in the (kind of) boarding schools they live in when there's no other place for them.

My Favorite Album #227 - Elizabeth Cook on Neil Young ‘Zuma’ (1975)
Tumblr media
Sharp of tongue and deep of soul, one of Nashville’s most compelling singer-songwriters joins me to talk about an underrated Neil Young and Crazy Horse classic, ‘Zuma’.
We talk about how Elizabeth discovered the album on a road trip, the elusive concision of Young’s lyrics, how this record defines a certain version of his sound, how the album documents the end of Neil Young’s creative grieving over guitarist Danny Whitten, how Elizabeth wants to steer her future recordings in a Neil-ward direction and what it was like to be a witness to the taping of the ‘Heart of Gold’ concert film.
