In this silly little head of mine, Jason never saw Bruce and Dick fight. When he came into the manor and Dick felt like he has been replaced, he had the conscience to not scream at Bruce in front of the kid that has no fault on the matter. So screamed and cried because Robin, his mantle and his parents' legacy, was robbed and given to another person without his consent, he threw hands at Bruce for that. But never in front of Jason. Because Jason can't be blamed by Bruce's actions.

And as general rule, Bruce doesn't raise his voice when he's close to kids. Especially his kids, and especially kids that are traumatized, that are still raw from leaving a particularly difficult situation. He took this from Batman, from the very first year, and carried the habit to his sons

But after Jason dies? They're both drowning in blind grief

So when they fight, and they do fight, viciously, Tim is the one that is there to see it. He's the one the see all the ugly bits, the imperfections behind the mask– not only that, I don't think Jason as a kid ever saw his father cry. Bruce knew neither of his sons should ever carry his emotional baggage.

But Tim? Oh, Bruce's grief is a weight that presses upon his chest until he chokes, and the manor is so haunted by Jason's absence, emerged in such deafening silence, that Tim inevitably heard Bruce cry more than once. Until his own chest became so tight he needed to go and comfort Bruce too. This or he was going to go insane. He needed to fix it all, somehow

While Dick and Jason got to make play and silly tricks while in patrol, Tim, Cass, Steph and Damian got a Batman extremely paranoid with protocols, rules and safety measurements. Dealing with Gotham is a serious commitment and is not to be joked about.

So there's that. I'm not saying either Dick or Jason got a perfect version of Bruce. And I'm not saying that, in either case, Bruce is/was a bad father. On the contrary, Batman must always be a good father because of what he represent– what he is as a character

But, yes, being raised by Bruce pre and post Jason's death is a completely different experience

And it got me thinking about how Jason reacts to this after he comes back

‘He must be sleeping.’ I thought, staring at the short thread of unanswered text messages. ‘Too bad.’

Leaning over the kitchen counter, I dialled his number and picked at my nails while listening to it ring. Though it was the middle of the day, I wouldn’t put it past Xavier to be taking a nap at this hour. That man could fall asleep anywhere, whenever he wished to.

He answered just after the third ring, and as expected, sounded like he had just woken up. “Yeah?”

I snorted and rolled my eyes. “Is this what I’ve been reduced to now? Just a ‘yeah’?”

“Oh, it’s you.” I heard shuffling in the background and wondered if he was getting out of bed. “Hi, angel.”

“Hi.” I let myself feel the shyness his nickname brought, but just for a moment. There was something that needed to be done. “Can you come down to my place? I need help reaching something.”

He yawned. “You want me to come down a floor just to reach something for you? Don’t you have a step stool?”

“Well, yeah,” I tapped the tips of my nails on the counter. “But I want to take advantage of my boyfriend privileges.”

“Boyfriend privileges?” Somehow, I could tell he was smiling and shaking his head. “Alright. I’ll be there soon.”

“Thank you~”

Hanging up, I moved into the living room and waited impatiently for Xavier to arrive. My other neighbours were coming and going, every sound outside my apartment’s door getting my hopes up only to let them fall as the sounds faded. Then a light knock finally came.

I threw myself at the door, yanking it open so I could pull my boyfriend inside. “About time.”

“I got here as fast as I could.” He reassured with a soft smile.

“Liar.” I extended my arms and gestured to nothing in particular. “You could have just appeared here.”

“You’re right.” Xavier shook his head, but I heard him chuckling under his breath. “So, what is it you need help with?”

Stepping closer to him, I placed both hands on his biceps and rose to the balls of my feet. “It’s okay. I can reach it now.”

I pressed my lips against his, stomach twisting in delight at the soft, breathy sound of surprise that escaped him. His cheeks and ears were bright red when I dropped back onto my heels.

I smiled up at him. “I got what I needed.”

He turned his head away from me, a habit I noticed whenever I flustered him enough. “You were able to reach it all on your own.”

I scrunched my nose and shook my head in disagreement. “You were an entire floor up. I didn’t feel like going all the way upstairs.”

“So instead, you had me come to you.” Xavier’s hands caught my hips, pulling me flush against him. He dipped his head, nose brushing against mine. “Since I’m here now, you may as well take more.”

I massaged circles into his arms with my thumbs, the small space between us sparking with electricity. “Well, if you’re offering…”

I sighed as he closed the distance, letting him take the lead and guide the kiss. If he was willing to indulge me, then I’d take as much as he was willing to give.

i am once again begging people to learn how to recommend things. i’ve been seeing a couple posts lately about a league of their own that have honestly done a really poor job of selling it, not least because none of them actually say what it’s about

one essentially said “you guys need to watch it because it’s got queer woc, and if you don’t watch it, we’ll never get a season 2” which is coming at it backwards. why do i care about getting another season of a show i haven’t watched yet?

another said “if you liked our flag means death you should watch this, because they’re both gay and about real-life historical figures” which, while technically true, is missing the point of both shows. ofmd is a comedy about pirates in the early 16th century. a league of our own, from what i can tell (i had to google it, because none of those posts mention any of this) seems to be a drama about baseball in the early 20th century. what about those is similar

do we really need to keep having this discussion about not tokenizing stories?? because it does it a disservice to boil it down to “it’s good and you should watch it because it’s Diverse”

it’s like if i said, “hmm, i want to go clothes shopping, my closet feels stale,” and you told me, “i have just the thing,” and tried to give me a blank cardboard box with something inside. “what is it?” i ask, and you tell me, “it’s purple.”

but is it a top? pants? i don’t really wear skirts so i wouldn’t be interested. is it a turtleneck? i like those sometimes, but it’s really hard to pull them off. what material is it? i have sensory issues and i don’t like polyester. what if we’re not the same size and it doesn’t fit?
