#CROAK BY GINA DAMICO

"You might be in a YA low fantasy book if you turn the corner to get to your locker and come upon a daemon. They contain everything odd about high school and literalize it with fantasy. Here is a must-read list of YA low fantasy books for genre lovers and novices alike.
Fantasy has a lot of sub-genres. Some are more well-defined than others, but on the broadest scale, there are high fantasy books and low fantasy books. Low fantasy books have fantastical elements in an otherwise normal world. You might be a witch working in a Starbucks who serves a cappuccino to a werewolf. The fact that you have magic may be well known. It could be a secret from others around you. As long as there is magic, abnormal beings, or paranormal somethings in the normal setting, it’s low fantasy."

Read-A-Likes for Anime Lovers (Part 1)
My Hero Academia follows a teenager as he gains powers in a Shōnen anime. When superpowers are everywhere, so are superheroes and supervillains. Growing up without powers, he has obsessively studied the strengths and weaknesses of anyone he encounters with powers. By chance, he encounters his hero and goes through the process of learning how to use his gifted power in a super-school environment.
Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson also involves a world where many people have superpowers, unfortunately, they are all supervillains. Our main character is powerless and would like to stay that way. He has obsessively collected information on all supervillains after his father was killed by stealheart, the supervillain and dystopian leader of Newcago. Soon, he joins up with resistance group who want to take down the supers. It’s My Hero Academia if the League of Villians ruled the world with a small group of geeky quirk-less rebels trying to stop them.
Sword Art Online is a Shōnen anime where a teen gamer is one of the many people to get stuck in a VR game. If you die in the game, you die in real life as well. In this world, groups filled with magic and sword fighting aim to clear levels and challenges so they can all be free.
Arena by Holly Jennings follows a VR sports legend as she looks to find a balance between the virtual world and the real one. Fighting in teams, players battle to the death in a VR game for public consumption. The catch is anything they can do in the real world, they can also do in the virtual one. Rigorous team training paired with the hard party lifestyle lead to short careers for many players. Instead, she aims to survive and thrive in the industry with her team behind her as one the first female team leader in the game’s history.
Soul Eater, a Shōnen (wow I swear this isn’t on purpose) anime explores the world of death. Or at least what happens when you die. One human weapon and one weapon meister come together to reap souls. The main characters are going to school to become certified in their field, learning how to work in the world and with each other in the process.
Croak by Gina Damico follows one rage-filled teenage girl who comes to learn that she is a Grimm Reaper. When she is carted to a town of others with her profession, her anger lessens and her powers appear. Reapers work in teams of two, one reaps the soul and another contains the soul so they can be carted to the afterlife. The light tone and macabre idea go hand in hand with Soul Eater.
Psycho Pass is a crime-thriller that continues this Shōnen trend with a dystopian society and a government of thought police. From the perspective of an investigator new to the force, this system is explored and pushed to its fullest extent.
1984 by George Orwell its impossible not to recognize the origin of thought police in literature. The dystopian novel explores a future where the government decides the emotions that someone should have and express, the history that someone should remember and promote, and the role someone should perform in society. While the book comes from the perspective of a citizen rather than an enforcer, you would be hardpressed to find a more relevant read.
Kill La Kill *wipes forehead* is a Seinen anime where battles are used in a school setting as a way of granting prestige and strength. The main character wants to find her father’s killer as she collects life fibers used to improve her own battle gear.
Nevernight by Jay Kristoff follows one young girl on her bloody path to revenge. After her family is killed, she is able to control the shadows of herself and others. The fearlessness she is granted helps her in her classes as she becomes a part of an assassination group. The battles, magic, and overarching terror should carry any lover of fantasy right to the bookstore.

Hello, everyone! A lot has changed since I introduced myself at the beginning of my Tumblr journey. I decided that I should make a new introduction post because of all the different things going on.
What is my blog?
This blog is my go-to for studying, languages, books, writing, and psychology. I also like to post pictures that are aesthetic and I will occasionally make a not great mood board. I am also thinking about making a side blog for my nerd/meme interests.

A couple more things before you go
I am looking for study/language/writing people or just friends and would love to talk to you!
I am in a Whatsapp ‘studyblr community group’ that I love, feel free to ask to join. We talk about studying and education, but also about our lives. We ask each other for advice and share our accomplishments!
If you know any study groups (discord, whatsapp, etc) that I can join, let me know!
Usually people put their inspirations down at the bottom, but I am up late and don’t have the brain power. I might tag people in some comments later :) Thanks!

'Croak' has been sitting on my TBR pile for over a year - recently got time to read it and fell in love - jumped online to buy the rest of the series, so keep a look out for the reviews to come :) A sarcastic teen protagonist much in the same vein as the tv show 'Dead to Me.'

#readers, I want to hear any #book that made you laugh out loud! I need some #comedy #books recommendations! 😁 Been feeling heavy lately and could use some light hearted #reads and big belly laughs. 😅 I'm open to YA, NA, and Adult genres as long as they aren't offensive or make fun of others. Also I'm only looking for fiction no memoirs or biographies. 😉 I'm surprised that I can't think of many that made me lol. But one I can think of is Croak by author Gina Damico which is a YA paranormal trilogy with maybe a little horror because it deals with death?I have to say book 1 is my fav and the ending wasn't what I wanted but I still enjoyed it. 🤣 I want to hear about the books that made you laugh! This is a genre I need to expand my knowledge on. Please share in the comments! 🤗 #booklover #bookrecommendations #bookstagram #satire #reader #readmorebooks #readersofig #reading #read #readerscommunity #readersgonnaread #readabook #booknerd #bookworm #booklovers #bookcommunity #booklove #comedyreads #comedyread https://www.instagram.com/p/CD7zp8ZHl07/?igshid=2mlqjz1sr1d4

HMH Teen Series to Start in August!
The summer is NOT almost over, no matter what the calendar says. There’s still time to marathon a bunch of books, and we have a few series we think you must start before the summer departs. You’re welcome!
Tumblr media
1.     The His Fair Assassins trilogy (soon to be quintuplet!) by Robin LaFevers
This trilogy can be summed up in one simple sentence: assassin nuns in medieval France.  Oh, and Death is their master. These books are basically like The Young Elites meets Arya Stark’s time with The Faceless Men (if you’re a Game of Thrones fan like we are.) They’re dark, steeped with rich and bloody history of medieval warfare, packed with court intrigue and action, and so, so, romantic. (Seriously, the swoons here will remind you of how you felt with Alina and the Darkling. You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.)
Tumblr media
You meet Ismae in Grave Mercy, who joins the convent of Saint Mortain to escape an arranged marriage; Sybella, the most gifted of all the assassins, who has a terrible secret, in Dark Triumph; and in Mortal Heart, Annith discovers her power comes with a great cost, and will alter their destinies forever.
If you haven’t checked out this series yet, this summer is the perfect time to try, because Robin Lafevers is gifting us with TWO MORE BOOKS in this series!
2.     The Undertow Trilogy by Michael Buckley
The title to this series makes it obvious where these books are begging to be read: at the beach! And you’ll need the sunshine, too, because this story is dark with lots of shadowy characters to contend with. Part sci-fi, part dystopian, this trilogy explores what would happen if aliens showed up on Earth—but they didn’t come from the sky?
Tumblr media
Lyric Walker watches as the Alpha, ocean warriors, ascend from their watery depths on to Coney Island. Factions immediately break out as the government tries to separate the humans from the Alpha…except that Lyric has met their crown prince, Fathom, and wants to be with him. We won’t spoil what happens in Raging Sea, or Heart of the Storm, but we will say that athor E Lockhart said of this series "Allegorical and romantic, [Undertow] reads like an action movie with especially awesome CGI."  There’s your summer blockbuster!
3.     Jessica’s Guide to Dating On the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey
Tumblr media
If you wish Vampires would come back into YA, don’t stress: they’ve been here all along. This duology is an oldie but a goody about Jessica Parkwood, a regular girl trying to get a life during her senior year of high school. But her plan changes when she meets Lucius Vladescu, who tells her not only is she actually a long-lost vampire princess, he’s her one true love. (Dreamy, right?) The Princess Diaries with a paranormal twist, Jessica can’t resist the allure of her new vampire life—and when someone threatens it, she’ll do anything to stop them. If part of you still wants to live out your fantasy of becoming a vampire princess, there’s no time like the present to discover Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, and the sequel, Jessica Rules the Dark Side.
4.     Palace of Spies by Sarah Zettel
Court intrigue, gilded palaces, betrothals, secret entrances, corsets and crowns and thrones, oh my! We love a good royal YA, and this series is one you may not have read yet but totally should. When a sixteen year-old girl is coaxed into posing as a lady in waiting during King George I’s reign, she thinks she’s made it big. But then she discovers that the girl she’s pretending to be might have been killed…and she could be next! The next two books, Dangerous Deceptions and Assassin’s Masque follow Peggy throughout her time in England, as she survives royal scandals, murder attempts, and heartbreak. Fans of The Winner’s Curse trilogy will love these books!
Tumblr media
5.     Croak by Gina Damico
If you take your sunshine with a bit of doom and gloom, check out Croak by Gina Damico! This series is a darkly humorous take on a rebellious teenage girl forced to spend a summer on her Uncle Mort’s farm. But her bad summer is about to become a bit more fun: that is, if finding out the real family business is Grim Reaping, and she’s next in line for the job. The series gets even more twisted when Lex finds out that she can damn the souls she reaps, which scares even the toughest of dead-soul collectors. If you love Neal Schusterman’s Scythe, Zac Brewer’s books, and a little humor alongside your darkness, this is the one for you.
Tumblr media
So, are you up to the challenge of reading all these books before the summer is over? We hope so! Let us know which ones are your favorite, and any other series starters we should add to our TBR.
