The crowds of visitors who invaded monuments and museums with enthusiasm and passion demonstrate the enormous and transversal attraction that cultural assets are capable of exerting.
Making culture open and participatory, giving people the freedom to use it so that this creates an experience. Not a simple passage to say "I've been there", but something deeper, which puts you in contact on a cognitive and even more emotional level with what you are going through.
Last night there were those who flocked to museums, without necessarily having a background in art studies. It does not matter. Someone turns up their noses but I say it doesn't matter. Exchanging impressions among strangers in front of a sinopia or a work by Giovanni Pisano is sharing, it is love for beauty, it is creating an experience.
Last night there were those who entered the cathedral, those who preferred the concert, those who went to the museums and those who simply stayed to play on the lawns in front of the monuments. It was a perfectly successful collective ritual because it was free. Everyone was put in a position to react to art and beauty as they felt.
This is my idea of culture, art and anthropology.

A trip to Pisa and my first starstruck encounter with the Triumph of Death by Buffalmacco in the Sacred Cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale) has inspired it. That, alongside the many impressions from the danze macabre on the churches in Paris and Italy, sealed the deal; and of course, the theme of Dies Irae itself from the Gregorian tradition. These have been the three keys. In particular I have marveled in Pisa at the souls depicted as infants being dragged out from the mouths of the dead by devils and Angels.
