Their whole entire world fell apart after the news. They felt like they lost an entire part of themself..again. Amaryllis was filled with vengeance, anger and desperation, all in one bitter heart. It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way! Their one and only family, VILE, was found out and arrested.

by a Carmen Sandiego. 

A name that tasted bitter to their tongue, They longed to defeat this “Wannabe Superhero” right this moment. They sighed with a groan, trying not to release all their frustration and anger just yet.

They took out their gadget, typing down a specific hacked contact.

“Who is this..?” The reciever asked,

“The Troll, Find out which jail VILE is in.” his stomach dropped.

“Amaryllis..? I thought you were arrested…or long gone.” He said, while trying to find out the location of the jail.

“Luckily, no. Those idiots could never catch me. Anyways, where..?” Amaryllis growled.

“Must be angry. Well, I gotcha. They’re in the jail of Reykjavik, Iceland.”

The Troll answered, realizing.

“Wait, are you planning to free VILE faculty? All four of them? Isn’t that too…eh..risky?” He asked.

“No, no, I’m not freeing them. Their plans are the reason why their entire organization fumbled..I’m just going to make them proud, that’s it. By defeating our dearest Carmen Sandiego, with my favorite two teammates..” They chuckled with an evil tone.

“Now, arrange me a helicopter flight.” Amaryllis ordered.

“Caaaaan do.” The Troll said.

“And— Amaryllis?” He asked.

“Hm?”

“…Keep safe out there, I don’t want to think you got arrested again.”

He murmured.

“Aww, so soft from an arrogant hacker.” Amaryllis teased, gaining silence from the embarrased ex-operative.

“Just…Okay, your flight arrives in just a bit.” 

The Troll informed.

“Good. Let’s defeat this lost little sheep in her own run.”

DO NOT HARRASS THE ANIMATION STAFF/STUDIO

In light of recent events, I decided to go check out Wildbrain's website for more information on what their 2D works are usually like.

These are the same people involved in the making of Carmen Sandiego

A show that, like some of their other 2D works, actually benefits from a choppier, more puppet-like animation style.

It's safe to say that it's the type that's worked well for them up to this point, with a couple exceptions. (See: The Snoopy Show)

And much as I'm disappointed with the quality downgrade of the new LMK season, well...

...Keep in mind that this studio has loads of talented people who are trying their best to fill the big shoes left behind by Flying Bark.

LEGO made the decision of what studio should step in next, and attacking the actual studio for it just makes you an asshole.

Lake - Infinity Train (non-canon)

it's not canon but you cannot tell me that Lake isn't an allegory for trans/nb people. her arc is so beautiful and her character resonates with me so much!

i have to admit, i actually kinda hated her in the beginning because of how aggressive and rude she was, but she actually gets good character development and you can also understand why she was the way she was, being a good representation of a minority who is constantly suffering because of the social norms she’s forced into. also i don’t ship her with jesse but i do like the idea of them in a qpr or just being platonic besties.

(i use she/her pronouns for Lake because that's what they use in the series, but also because not all non-binary people use they/them, and it's kinda weird to see people insist on using they/them for Lake just because she's nb-coded. she has never shown an aversion to bring referred to with she/her pronouns.)

Le Chevre x El Topo - Carmen Sandiego (canon)

they are side characters who don't play a huge role in the narrative but they are a really cute couple and have been confirmed to be canon! even without the confirmation, it’s clear that they were written to be a romantic couple.

mild spoiler: after the series ends, they stop being antagonists and instead put up a food truck together! it’s the cutest thing, i swear

Ryan x Min-gi - Infinity Train (non-canon)

my OTP through and through! i say non-canon but the romance is so heavily implied, you cannot ignore it.

they're a good example of childhood friends who had a complicated relationship where both individuals did something wrong, but in the end, they grow as people and manage to mend their relationship together.

Moomin x Snufkin - Moominvalley (canon)

i have only read one of the books and watched a few clips of these two characters but from that alone, it's clear that they were written as lovers (and the author is queer too!)

they are a beautiful portrayal of long-distance relationship where both individuals have different needs in life, but still want to be with each other regardless.

Terrestrius / Terry - The Dragon Prince (canon)

Terry is canonically transmasc and they actually manage to explain this in the series, without making it sound too forced or expository. he's such a sweetheart too, and his relationship with Claudia is actually really sweet, despite the fact that she's one of the villains.

Carmen x Julia - Carmen Sandiego (non-canon)

again, i say non-canon but it is heavily implied that they have feelings for each other, especially in the extra interactive episode, where Carmen leaves a bouquet of red roses for Julia, and Julia is shown to blush when receiving them.

Amaya x Janai - The Dragon Prince (canon)

what’s that? it’s actually possible to write an enemies to lovers romance that is healthy and not extremely abusive?

Amaya and Janai have such a good relationship in S5 (and Amaya is also a great disabled representation!) Janai actually learns sign language to communicate with Amaya, and there are no unnecessary miscommunication plots or drama, they’re just a really loving wlw couple.

Benson x Troy - Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (canon)

when i say we need more mlm ships in animated media!! i’m so glad us sapphics are getting a lot of representation but it’s time cartoons started including more queer men.

benson and troy are just a really sweet couple with a good relationship that doesn’t have a ton of pining or unnecessary angst. while i love complex and tragic queer relationships, i also think that it’s good to show teenagers just being teenagers sometimes.

this opinion seems to be scarce in the queer community, which really annoys me tbh.

Raine x Eda - The Owl House (canon)

i cannot believe that given the popularity of TOH, Raeda is still such an overlooked ship. this might be an unpopular opinion but Raeda is better written and has more chemistry than Lumity and Huntlow.

just within the span of Raine's introductory episode, they managed to establish a clearly romantic past between these two characters, and also an interesting dynamic. and even though they didn't have much screentime, they still turned out to be the best ship in the series. (again, just my opinion, don't come at me)

i think it's so important to show older queer people in media, just as it is important to show younger queer characters. it helps establish the fact that queerness has always existed and isn't some newfound trend that social media invented. not to mention, raeda is one of the very few canon ships that include a non-binary character.

yall do realize though that even if the animation quality has changed for lmk the writers and story. hasn’t? like we’re still getting a continuation but ppl are acting like it’s over and wildbrain iz gonna change everything when that’s just not true. it’s a new style of animation for them considering they only do puppet rigs for 2D and pretty good 3D animation. besides, let’s not forget it took a season before flying bark got to the iconic / more flowy animation of s2 that we all attribute to lmk. besides, these ppl animated carmen sandiego, a show with action and fairly smooth animation (i’m pretty sure someone fact check me if you need to), lmk is not in its flop or bad era. we’re judging it very heavily based on like a minute. let them cook yall ! hype mk up !! hype little bro up itz his 5th season !!! give it a chance before you count it out ! i trust that even if the animation is lacking that the story and the writing will still be something amazing

Today's topic- the change in animation in LMK

I know like the majority of the Fandom has probably been sent to the ER after season 5 animation (or the emotion couldn't tell) but I think someone said that the animation slightly changed from like the Pilot to s 1-3, somewhere there, so like 3 different animation at this point, maybe??

Alright here's my thoughts

AGGAGAGAGGGGHHHHHHHH

Okay for real this time-

When I first watched LMK, I fell IN LOVE with the fluid motions, the active movement, the anime-style Influence, the exaggeration, the most random fun moments, pop ups, yse of environment, angles, camera movement, facial and body expression and other stuff I don't know the name of

Now as someone who's never watched Anime, please don't kill me, I don't exactly know what that looks like, but try going anywhere on the internet without tripping down the stairs and falling into the basement of ANIME

Also, I'm used to more rigid, beautiful backrounds, great lighting, or basic show animation. Such as Trollhunters, Amphibia, The Owl House, Big City Greens, Ninjago, How to Train your Dragon, Carmen Sandiego and others

So as you can see, this was new to me, and I fricken loved it

Now I can tell there definitely has been change from the Pilot to season 4, more refined, less sloppy

So, when season 5-

Oh dear, I love you Wild Brain, I really do, Ninjago and Carmen Sandiego WERE BEAUTIFUL

BUT AHHHHHH

I will say this, this is a new artstyle, they need practice, and I'm sure it'll improve, but this is not that time it's time to CRITISIZE GET THE RED PEN (maybe I am an English Teacher)

Remember what I said about what I love about LMK animation? Okay now throw it out the window into the Fire of FRICK THIS

Now I will say, they used some angles pretty well, such as using the environment to show emotion/tension, like when it would Pam out and something was blocking the two characters, from Wukong to Macaque to the poll in the Pagado and then a mountain between MK and Wukong near the end- look for its cool- someone pointed it out here on Tumblr can't remember name sorry

2nd, the expressions look really typical, like I miss the shot eyebrow from Wukong, or the the pathetic puppy eyes of MK, or the :3 for Mei, or the furious faces of Pigsy, the sparkly pure joy of Sandy, the chaotic gremlinness of MO, the evil Edit maker smiles of Macaque (I've seen your tiktoks) ALL THE LITTLE EXTRA THAT MADE THE EXPRESSIONS AND HUMOR/TENSION/EMOTION BETTER

3rd, the movements. Seen especially in the second episode when they escape. It's just, so basic running, like compare them running to MK's run in s2 running from the LBD and then when he ran in s4 away from the Ink scroll. Just so much more fear and dread. Also talking bout LBD, her voice actor? Phenomenal as always? Her movements and how they animate her? She seems more like a red headed doll with button eyes than the horror of something like FNAF(haven't played FNAF so can't really compare) what I'm saying is she seemed less huanting, a weary, fear-instilling, and bone-chilling(shut up let me pun) presence this time around, which really makes the scene less dramatic, but the camera angles, voice acting, and some animation still make it somewhat good.

Okay, this post is getting long and I can rant all day, and that's not even with me rewatching the show to pick it apart, someone probably already has good for them I'll look for it👍

In conclusion, comes of more dull, simple, rough, and rushed. S5 story, which has some problems, really hit deep in the last few episodes, mostly MK and Wukong, and if the studio beforehand continued animating, then I think it would have been a masterpiece, really sad to see the wasted potential

I know it's a new studio, but I wish they took more time to practice and learn, and maybe do it on a season that wasn't like the big reveal and end (I'd say a more happy season but let's be honest the Trauma train ain't stopping for a LONG TIME)

so, I guess I'll give it a 4/10, points for using the backround to storytell, still got some great angles, some funny bits here and there (the soldiers where a joy), action scenes were somewhat good, not a lot can't judge more, and pity points because I know they're still learning

Most glaring, animation. It’s not bad, by any means. I’d certainly be proud of myself if I were able to come up with it.

However, I think it’s important to consider the context of the show’s style, and how it’s been improving significantly over instalments. Also, it’s Flying Bark. Flying Bark is just gonna make banger animation.

Am I a bit disappointed when comparing it to Emperor’s Wrath? Yeah. Especially when we’ve been waiting a full year for this—twice as long as usual.

But I’m not saying I won’t be watching the show because of it. I still love this story. Fuck, my favourite series is Epithet Erased. The show that’s best described as JPEGs wiggling around your screen for 2 hours. I can handle less than expected animation if it’s made up for by good writing.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people attacking invisible fans that claim they’re going to boycott the show because of this. Respectfully, source? The most aggressive criticism I’ve seen is “man that’s disappointing ig, still excited tho”. Who are you guys even fighting lmao. (Unless this is something happening on other platforms and you’re just venting on here which, valid)

Nevertheless, as I’ve said before, it’s not bad animation, just not up to the standard we’re used to. People are allowed to be disappointed. Let them be. This show isn’t flawless.

It’s looking to be real, all things considered. We’ve never gotten a fan leak this elaborate before, and it contains a lot of elements that were just recently revealed. Unless they’ve been getting announcements much earlier than we have (considering this fanbase’s sleuth skills, I’d doubt it) then there’s no other explanation other than it being official.

Official, however, doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to look that way the whole time. The animation is being done by another studio, yes, but only partially. Flying Bark is still here for the fun. This other studio also isn’t incompetent, they’re behind things like Carmen Sandiego. They know what they’re doing.

They’re also primarily handling additional material, means promotions, meaning trailers. Listen, it’s a bit of a stretch considering the fact that all trailers so far have been taken directly from the show, but also it’s industry standard to make a trailer before you’re even done, meaning you gotta cut some corners for the scenes you’re showing until you polish them up in post.

We know LEGO has a habit of keeping LMK things in their vault until they need to, this may be something they had lying around from early prod and released to maintain hype.

Any which way, this development is very much temporary, only applying because the team is currently working on a movie and need to momentarily lessen their workload. Even if the odds are against us and S5 looks like a PowerPoint presentation, it’ll likely go back to normal later.

Biiig animation rant aside, I am a tad bit sad about the direction the story is going in (namely the abandonment of Red Son) and the fan service is a bit much, but honestly what else are we expecting from JTTW fanfic.

I’m stoked to see more Macaque though—he’s looking to be becoming a proper protagonist, which is great for angst! Yippee!

One thing I haven’t seen anyone talk about is the complete lack of Nüwa. You know, the character they’ve been teasing this whole time? Where is she? Not in the trailer. Not in the posters.

Makes me wondering if this is a part of the new season, teasing the next one, the one Nüwa’s in, later.

I was confused of the trailer of Lego Monkie Kid S5 at first, but after realizing that Flying Bark Studios is passing the job of S5 to Wildbrain, a studio which worked on Carmen Sandiego(Netflix Series) back in 2019, I am a bit nervous of how it will turn out. However, I still hope that LMK thrives like normal even if it is a studio change. Tang did say better himself that there is a new chapter regardless.

I’m still waiting and I’m hoping that the Lego Monkie Kid fandom will still thrive before and after S5 comes out.

NOW MACAQUE?! U must be really in this show. But to explain the animation for s5. The trailer came out like back in May or June and the fandom went mad. Then one of the previous animators explained that Lego changed the animation studios from Flying Bark(animated LMK, ROTTMNT, MG&DD, etc.) to Wildbrain(animated Carmen Sandiego, Sonic Prime, etc.). Ive heard that they taking their time because Flying Bark is in the process of animating the ATLA movie, Lego was impatient and changed studios. Now the current problem in the fandom is that the writing team might be changed or rumors going around about it.

Pspsppspspss hey I'm kinda curious about S5 stuff. I don't think I have the full context and I'm wondering why it a) took so long and b) has different animation

So the first 4 seasons were all animated by Flying Bark, but for some unspecified scheduling issues (commonly speculated to be caused by them working on the ATLA movie) they were unable to finish the animation for season 5. Thus, the animation was outsourced.

I'm guessing there was a period where no work was being done on the season at all due to legal/internal complications resulting from the studio change, which would explain it being delayed. By the time Season 5 comes out it'll have been a full year since the last episodes released, instead of the usual 6-7 month interval.

The studio handling season 5 is Wildbrain, a reputable company that's done very nice 2D animation in the past (eg Carmen Sandiego and the new Peanuts stuff). However. The work they did for S5 is... not great. Weird proportions, messy animation, overall very flat and stiff looking. To the point where people were speculating it was fanmade or a publicity stunt.

While people did voice concerns about how Wildbrain would handle the animation, most people (me included) thought it'd turn out fine considering Wildbrain's track record + them having Flying Bark's storyboards to work with. So I'm genuinely shocked that this is the end result.

I suspect the animators over at Wildbrain had to rush so the season could be finished in time to release alongside the corresponding wave of sets, so it's possible any future seasons they do will look much better. I'm sure they'll benefit from having more time and experience.

Anyway. I have a lot of respect for both animation teams, but I really wish the show was in the hands of a studio more qualified to animate at the level expected for LMK. The hand drawn animation was such an iconic part of the series and it's really frustrating that they were so quick to abandon it. Very unfortunate situation for everyone.

Holding out hope that there'll be some moments where the animation still shines through. There are a few shots in the trailer that look pretty nice and I don't want to totally give up on it.
