McDermott’s Castle on Castle Island in Lough Key, Ireland. Lough Key is circular and includes over thirty islands in Roscommon County. A castle has stood on this .52-acre island since the 12th century. The MacDiarmada family, the ruling dynasty of the Magh Luirg from the 10th to 16th centuries, built the original castle. In 1235, the castle suffered through a siege by raft-mounted catapults and then by fire ships. Fire ships are filled with combustibles, set aflame, and sent into the enemy. Cormac McDermott, King of Moylurg, was forced to surrender. The McDermott’s lost the island in 1586. The current castle is a folly built in the 18thcentury as a summerhouse but destroyed by fire during WWII. The castle folly is now in ruins and open to the public.

I went to Castle Island South Boston, Massachusetts on Friday May 17, 2024 for the annual turnaround of the USS Constitution.The weather was very nice and there was a good turn out for the event. The ship stops at the fish pier and turns to face Fort Independence and does a 21 gun salute. Then the fort returns the 21 gun salute to the ship. There was three sailors from USS Consitution that were dressed in 1812 era uniforms on the pier. They provided info about the ship as the event got under way. The USS Constitution next turnaround will be on July 4th.

I visited Castle Island in South Boston, Mass. on 6.9.23 for the turnaround of the USS Constitution also known as Old Ironsides in honor of Women's Veteran Day. The ship did a 21 gun salute to Fort Independence on the Island. The Constitution is the oldest commissioned ship in the US Navy. First launched in 1797 There have been seventy seven commanders in the ships history. The present commander Billie J. Farrell is the first women in the ships history.
