Criminal Minds S01E01 - a scene analysis/things I noticed
(The text in the images is the same, I just worried you can't read my handwriting)
Tumblr media
1. In the beginning scene where Gideon is asked to return to the BAU, the way the characters are positioned is representative of their power dynamic or role within the BAU at that point as well as representing the dilemma within the scene
- Reid is in the background since he is the youngest and least experienced, also the least in focus atp. He's also positioned in front of a map, which could be foreshadowing for his ample ability of geographical profiling
- Morgan is in front of Reid but still behind Hotch and Gideon
- At first, Gideon is positioned as the main focus with the camera showing him debating returning to the BAU for the first time since the Boston incident. As Hotch tells him that “the order came from the director” the camera focus switches as in the team “came back into focus” as Gideon realizes he has to come back.
- The camera then focuses on Hotch since he is the leader of the team. This shows that now that Gideons dilemma isn't the only thing in focus, the team has dynamics and roles which are also a large aspect of the show
Tumblr media
2. In this scene with the family of the unsub, although the family isn't centered they are very clearly the focus of attention due to the clear blue colour tint around them. This suggests the grief they are in after finding out their family member committed a crime. The family is surrounded by green tints as well, showing their grief is surrounded by the unsubs world (explanation in next observation)
- In the next scene if you look at the family portrait you will see that everyone in the family except the unsub is in blue, showing that the entire family was affected by his actions in their grief but also that he stands out from them.
- When Elle comes in from the left in the next frame, her red outfit is a contrast to the blue. She is from the outside world, an outsider to the family's grief.
Tumblr media
3. The general lighting in this scene shows an outside world (the warmer lights in the hallway) and the inside world of the unsub, with the darker green colors. In the frame pictured, the unsub is looking away from the outside world.
- Gideon is wearing red to contrast the green
- The family portrait shows how the unsub is an outsider with the rest of the family positioned in a tight triangle and him in the bottom right corner, also wearing different colors from the rest of the family
- The family photo is centered in this scene, showing a clear contrast between them surrounding the unsub versus him now being all alone
- The table in front of him is empty, showing he has no future in front of him. In a few seconds Gideon places his book in front of him, showing that the only future now is the BAUs work
- There is a chair facing backwards behind the unsub. This is like an interrogation, so the two chairs are for the two unsubs. But because the team doesn't know this yet, the chair faces away from Gideon, the interrogator.
Tumblr media
4. Following the train of thought about the colors, we can see that the car the unsub used to lure the women into is red. The contact with the outside world is red, and in the scene where we see him kidnap a victim we can see he is wearing a green jacket as he locks the girl in the red car, showing that she is being locked away by the inside world of the unsub.
Tumblr media
5. In this scene with Hotch interrogating the unsub, he is centered as he walks into the interrogation room to show his importance.
Tumblr media
6. In the scene at the very end of the episode, the unsub is once again shown in green lighting. His truck is shown in red, while Gideon is also in green. This shows how Gideon Has stepped into the inner world of the unsub, and is looking out on the outside world from within as he realizes who he's talking to.

Colour contrast throughout the episode:

THE WAY THE SHOW ATTACKED ME WITH THE CHINESE COLORS SYMBOLISM
In Chinese tradition Blue is for Spring, yellow is for late summer. We are approaching the end of the season/year/(show ?) so Blue uniforms are turning Yellow. The title and the ending poem tells us we are in midsummer. « Youth » is almost over. (The teachers were also talking about youth) But check that yellow line straight to Tian ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the show Tian is Blue and Wang is Yellow (Wang being an homophone of the color in Mandarin). Tian is basking in golden love all episode and the color transfer is so good
Tumblr media
But also bright and vibrant GREEN IS HERE (blue +yellow). Rebirth and also…jealousy.
Tumblr media
Bonus : a lil pride flag on a green table.
Tumblr media
So now let’s get ourselves some RED

things I wish I could relive for the first time again:
that magical window where you finish a new piece of media, having watched/read it all by yourself with no fandom contact whatsoever, and you are just so happy about it, and full of interesting theories and takeaways, and just in love with it as a gorgeous piece of art.
because I swear to god as soon as you join the fandom for anything, you're bombarded with how you're supposed to view characters and their arcs, how you're supposed to morally and ethically judge the plot and the ways it apparently failed to present the right message, and if you don't you'll either be shunned for not sharing the popular headcanons or you'll be harassed for not criticizing the source material enough.
like how is it that the fans of a piece of media are also the ones being the most negative about it? If I like a show or a movie or a book, well, I liked it. That's kind of the point. I'm actually not here to tear it apart and talk about how it didn't live up to standards other people had! I enjoyed it for what it was, and forcing myself to find negative things to say about it doesn't actually bring me more enjoyment of it or reap any benefit to me. Fandom's a double-edged sword; you want to join a community to share your love for a piece of art, and the price you pay for a modicum of joy is a mountain of negativity. that's one main reason that I never engage with fandom until I'm completely done with a show, because if I was plugged into all of that commentary and discourse during the process, I'd be completely colored by how I'm expected to interpret everything this piece of art is presenting to me without being able to even form my own opinions.
#this is currently about arcane but it's also every fandom i've been in since the dawn of time#there is so much political discourse about how the show handled the piltover zaun conflict and class struggle and i just#like i don't even know what to say besides. art doesn't have to provide the correct answer you know#it's not asking you to accept their explanation as the right one. it's just presenting a story. a scenario. a nuanced one at that#which of course the internet is the enemy of nuance as we know#especially in arcane i thought it was fairly clear that the end wasn't the bright shining future anyone hoped it'd be.#was anyone right in their actions? did anything turn out the way they wanted? or was it just as messy and gray as real life#we're living in such a myopic time for art where it's believed every story must take the correct stance or be invalid or even harmful#instead of just offering a perspective. a lived experience. a hypothetical. a story.#and when it gets to be headache inducing all I can do is take myself back to how I felt when I watched the show for the first time#and I came away from the whole thing being incredibly moved and captivated by the entire story and its nuance.#i had no qualms and no criticisms and i was very impressed with the depth of storytelling surrounding the political parts of the plot#as well as the character arcs. i guess people like to dunk on viktor's s2 arc nowadays and i just. shrug. i was blown away by it#for me at least i have nothing but pure love and admiration for art after i've viewed it. it's only after interacting with fandom#that the criticisms seep in and now i can't unsee it and even if i don't agree with it it still muddies my ability to enjoy the art#fandom is a curse in that sense. like i seek out art that i enjoy. i have no desire to make myself dislike that art. whats the point#why are the biggest haters of a piece of media the 'fans' of it idk.#me finishing a show: wow i love all the characters and the plot and the cinematography! I want to talk to others about how cool it is!#meanwhile the fandom hating characters to the point of death threats to their creators#after 13 years in fandom i can say this - if you don't need to join the fandom for smth then don't lmao.#you'll be able to retain your genuine enjoyment of the thing.#that whole 'if you didnt like what i made then make your own' philosophy people use on fanfic/fanart should be applied more#to actual published art too. you should be able to meet art where it's at and if you don't like what it's saying or how it looks then#just move on and find something else. another branch of the 'the greatest enemy of the left is the left' tree imo#a show has a lot of queer rep? bash it to the point of making the creators go into hiding for not doing it how you think it should be#no artist will ever be able to satisfy everyone's demands. they just want to put their experiences and ideas into the world#creators that try to do good get more vitriol than those who never try. they're scrutinized harder and judged more harshly#it's just. one of those 'real fucking tired of fandom' nights. the best cure is just going back and rewatching the source material#all on your own and falling back in love with it. just you and your genuine connection with the art.#anyway what happened to steven universe was unforgiveable and it really ruined fandom for me. like. yall don't deserve nice things

Did anyone else's formal art education have a weird focus on the PRB to the exclusion of almost everything else going on in that period, immediately before or immediately after? I mean I LIKE their stuff I was just wondering if it was the pet subject of my lecturers or a universal Western art education thing.

This scene from Andaz (1949) lives rent-free in my head:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raj Kapoor tosses Nargis' honour aside – his jealousy has made him blind, and he declares the 'flower' as devoid of 'fragrance'. In the same shot, an incredulous Dilip Kumar catches it one-handed.
But does she want him to?
(The next scene between Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor is hilarious because neither of them adjust their acting styles for the other. Very jarring, very funny.)

I think the thing that gets me sometimes isn’t just “oh it’s cringe to like [x]” it’s that I got told a lot that I don’t enjoy things correctly
As a kid, I loved Disney’s Little Mermaid, but a lot of times I had to physically leave the room when Triton scolds Ariel in the beginning because the second hand shame/embarrassment was overwhelming. I would stand up and walk around or leave if a movie scene was too intense, or even if the music was picking up too much. I had to cover my ears at movie theaters for the first 15 minutes until I adjusted to how loud it was. As an adult, I can read smut straight faced, but have to fight off giggles and tiny squeaks when reading really cute fluff. If I grin or laugh while reading, everyone wants to know what prompted such a reaction, and I don’t know how tell them it was Sophie hurling magical weed killer at Howl and it’s much cuter/funnier in context.
My feelings are too big for me, and it’s not right to disturb other people like that. Even your smallest joys take up too much space, are too noticeable. Be smaller. Flatten your face, still your body. No one else cares like you do.

I saw Nosferatu and Die Hard 2 tonight, and now I'm obsessed with the ways movies depict a time and place, whether intentionally or not. Nosferatu took painstaking steps to faithfully recreate 19th century Germany/Transylvania (and nailed it by the way), while Die Hard 2 put much less thought into that aspect of filmmaking, and in doing so accidentally became a perfect time capsule of 1990.
I know I've brought it up before, and I'm sure I'll bring it up again and again, but I love the way slop media (non-derogatory) that lacks originality instead becomes a perfect cross section of society as it exists at that point in time, which in turn means that that story couldn't have existed in that specific form if it had been made at any other time or in any other place.
