Summary: Wolffe's wife suddenly dies, leaving him a single father in the middle of a war.
Pairing: Wolffe x Lilith Sestri (OFC)

Tags & Warnings: heavy angst, mention of death, off-screen death, spousal death, OFC is not the spouse, grief, hurt/comfort

Author's Note: I came up with this sad short fic while I was on my social media hiatus. If I have to suffer, then y'all are going to suffer with me. It's sad. It's really sad. I might make this into a full-length fic at some point, where Wolffe hires a nanny for his daughter and they fall in love, or something sappy like that. As always, please enjoy 💚

Wolffe stood frozen in the med-center hallway, staring down an endless sterile corridor with a small hand wrapped tightly around his finger. A pulmonary embolism, they said. A blood clot in the lungs, they said. She was so young, they said. Could've happened to anyone, they said. But it didn't happen to anyone. It happened to his wife. Within moments, and by no choice of his own, Wolffe became a single father in a galaxy torn by war. The light of his life, snuffed out like a candle.
"Daddy?" his daughter said while tugging on his hand.
Wolffe snapped out of his daze and looked down at her. "Yeah, baby?"
"Where's mommy?" she asked.
"Mommy…" Wolffe paused, biting his lip as he looked anywhere but her face. "Mommy had to go."
"Go where?" she asked.
"Far away," he said.
"But why?" she asked. "I love mommy."
"I love mommy too, baby," he said, barely able to keep his emotions at bay.
"Then why'd she leave?" she whined.
"Listen to me, Cara," he knelt down onto the ground in front of her. "Sometimes… Sometimes people have to leave and there's nothing we can do about it."
"When's she coming back?" she asked.
"She's not," he choked.
"I want mommy!" she yelled.
Wolffe picked up his crying child and held her against his chest, letting his own tears fall silently out of her view. "I know, baby. I know. I want her too."
"I'm not leaving without mommy!" she wailed.
"Please, baby," he soothed as she cried, inconsolable.
"Hush little one," a soft voice came from behind Wolffe.
Wolffe turned around and sighed in relief. "General."
"I came as soon as I heard," Plo said. He placed a gentle hand on Wolffe's shoulder. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
"Thank you," Wolffe said while bouncing his daughter to try and calm her down.
"Come here little one," Plo said as he stretched out his arms to take Cara from Wolffe.
Wolffe peeled his distraught daughter off of his chest and handed her to Plo, then collapsed down onto the bench against the wall. He hung his head in his hands and sobbed quietly. His first real moment to fully process the loss of his wife.
Plo stepped away from Wolffe to give him some privacy and continued to bounce Cara to soothe her.
The little girl's crying echoed throughout the hallway, sending sharp pains through Wolffe's already broken heart. He wanted her to stop crying so he could stop crying. She was just a child, and she didn't understand what was happening, which made the situation all the more difficult. How could he console her when he could barely hold it together himself? The last time he felt this helpless was the Malevolence incident, and even then he held it together better than right now.
He didn't know how to be a mother. He was a soldier, a commander. How was he going to fight in the War and raise a child? It was practically impossible. He couldn't just quit the War either. No clone could. His wife was a saint. She took care of everything while he was away on campaigns. The only thing he needed to do when he came home was hug his little baby girl and dote on her until he had to leave again. He gave his family everything he had, and everything he didn't have.
He always knew he was going to be an absent father because of the War, but he didn't in his wildest imagination think that his wife would die before him. They had contingency plans for if he died, but they didn't make any plans for if she died. That entire scenario came out of left-field and blindsided him. They were eating dinner like they always did when he came home for shore leave. How in the universe did they go from eating dinner to her being dead? He'd never understand it.
"General," Wolffe said through his tears. "What do I do now?"
Plo studied the devastated commander and softened his eyes. "You take each moment as it comes."
"But what do I do?" Wolffe pleaded with a hitch in his throat. "The funeral, my kid, my troops, my–"
"Arrangements are being made as we speak," Plo interrupted. "You are not alone in this despair, Wolffe."
Wolffe looked up at his general and a menial, barely noticeable smile formed at the corner of his mouth, but it was betrayed by the streaks of tears that lined his flushed cheeks. He said nothing in response, afraid that if he uttered even one more syllable, he'd lose the last bit of composure he'd maintained. However, the words of his general rang true. He was not alone. He had never been alone. He had his general and an entire battalion of brothers to lean on. His family was here for him.

you know what's so underrated ? thinking about the clone boys — please , i beg , talk about them more .
they don't get the chance to be , but in my mind , they are soooo loverboys . just the sweetest hearts you'd ever know , and they try their hardest to navigate the feelings you incite in them that they weren't prepared for !! they feel their skin grow hot when you praise them , or touch them in a way that's more heartfelt than needed .
give them kisses everywhere pls . depending on your clone of choice , they'd get the biggest ego boost — or hide the cutest damn smile as they try to fight off the way their heart keeps skipping beats .

Hunter Fic Sneak Peek #4
Tumblr media
(author's note -- this is about as raunchy as it'll get; keeping the whole thing PG-13)
She pushed him until his back was flush against the wall, head spinning and heart racing. Her hands were heavy on his chest, his neck, his cheeks... She cupped his face with fervent desire, gazing affectionately into his eyes before closing her own, tilting her head, and pressing her lips to his.
Her hands began to roam again, stroking and caressing, pulling feelings and yearnings and urges from him that had been dormant as long as he could remember. An initial resistance welled up, adding to the constant confusion, but it was soon diminished beneath her passion as she kissed him again and again.
Heat flushed Hunter's body from head to toe, and he opened up to her, his fingers gripping her waist as he leaned in. A feminine, breathy sigh escaped her as the intensity grew, their faces pressed together, lips caressing and tugging. She opened her mouth more, sliding her tongue against his, and tingles coursed through his veins as he met her fervor with his own, squeezing his eyes tightly shut and losing himself to the ardor growing in his core.
She ran a hand up the back of his neck, digging it into his hair and tightening her grip, pulling back for a moment to regard him with unbridled lust. "You are so kriffing hot, you know that? Damn, the things I want to do to you..." she murmured, heavy-lidded eyes following the contour of his face as he opened his eyes to meet hers, smoldering with intensity.
A small smile curved her cheeks, and she bit her lip before leaning in again, capturing his lips in her own with a more possessive tenacity that continued to awaken things throughout his entire body. He was reeling from the sheer overwhelm of it all -- her scent, her breath, her body, her sensuality, her uncomplicated want for him. This was what he'd wanted, wasn't it? Freedom from responsibility, freedom to pursue a future of his own, freedom to release the burden of every possible consequence and to simply enjoy life on life's terms...
Her hand slipped beneath his shirt, his muscles tensing against her touch and fanning the flame where her fingernails gently raked up toward his chest. Soft lips trailed to his jawbone, below his ear, down the side of his neck, setting him on fire inside and out. Hunter tilted his head away, feeling her consuming desire spreading through his own chest.
This was what he had wanted. This was the right choice.
Wasn't it?

Grumpy commander Wolffe can't resist Bunny's kisses 😘
Art of clone commander Wolffe and the 104th medic, Rose Goldstone, from my story, The Hunt.
Here it is, my first official digital art piece. I did this with a pose reference I found that immediately made me think of Rose when I saw the lipstick. I just knew I had to draw these two. It isn't perfect, but it's mine, and I've got plenty ideas planned for me to practice and get better.
Just wait until I start drawing Crosshair!!

“The Empire is looking for us,” Crosshair rasped, tears dripping down his face more freely than Tech had seen them in a long time. He clung to Tech’s arm as if he were a lifeboat. “Th-they’re killing her to get to us. Mar'eyir kaysh, Tad’ika.” [Find her, Little Two.]
Runi had taken up a place at his side once he passed out, keeping a check on his vitals with Wrecker keeping a watch over both. Tech had noted Sinya pulling Hunter by the arm into the medbay. The doors hadn’t opened since and Tech decided he wasn’t going to risk opening them.
Echo had offered to help him sort through the data he’d been pulling from the Empire’s databanks. Fives and Omega had offered their assistance as well, but had fallen asleep about an hour ago, Omega leaning against her newfound brother.
Echo had just thrown a blanket over the pair when the console chirped.
“Has the new set finished decrypting?” he asked, coming to look over Tech’s shoulder.
Tech nodded, fingers dancing across the buttons and eyes scanning the information rapidly.
Tech was starting to believe this set wouldn’t have her information either when Echo nearly shouted “there”.
Tech opened her personnel file, her image attached at the top. She looked so tired. Her eyes were cold and empty, seemingly half-lidded permanently. The white streak in her hair was stark against the rest. Her mouth was fixed in a straight line, missing all hint of the pull upwards it used to have. The image sent a shiver down Tech’s spine.
He read down into the file. It showed him the missions she’d been assigned, locations, dates, objectives. And at the very bottom was a report from an Imperial Officer.
Tech opened the report, both he and Echo letting out little gasp at the words written across the top.
“Status: Killed in Action”
“Kriff,” Echo cursed behind him, hand running over the short thatch of curls that had finally begun to regrow over his scalp.
Tech scowled at the report. Hadn’t the Chromira shown Crosshair that Jaine was alive? It wouldn’t make sense to show him images of the past.
“What about the curse? She could still be alive, couldn’t she?” Echo and Tech’s heads turned quickly toward Omega, who was removing herself from the tight embrace of Fives.
“How do you know about that?” Echo asked, kneeling down next to her.
“It was in a report someone gave Nala Se,” she shrugged. “It came in after you all left for Felucia.”
Echo and Tech exchanged a look.
“Nala Se read the report and then asked the Prime Minister for an urgent meeting. Then once Jaine woke up, Nala Se ordered…”
“Ordered what, ‘Mega?” Echo asked.
Omega’s hands were shaking slightly. “They did a– an experiment on her,” she mumbled, her expression turning to a mix of fear and anger. “They put a chip in.”
“A chip?” Echo repeated, nervously glancing at Fives, thankful that he was still asleep. “Like the inhibitor chips?”
Omega nodded and Echo let out a breath he didn’t know he’d be holding. “It didn’t work right at first, so they had to condition her. That’s where she got those scars and why her hair turned white.”
Tech felt sick, guilt twisting his stomach into knots. Behind his eyes he saw flashes of his own ‘conditioning’, but he pushed the foul memories to the side. He couldn’t shut down now.
“It wasn’t her?” Echo whispered, his widened eyes finding Tech. “None of it was her.”
Crosshair woke up with his head pounding and his entire body sore. He sat up and looked around. He definitely wasn’t on the Marauder. No, this place was too cold, literally and figuratively. A shiver ran down his back. Instinctively he wrapped his arms around his body. He could feel his hands shaking. Wait, his hands? No, these were someone else’s hands.
He realized a moment later that he wasn’t in control of this body; he was merely a passenger.
The person reached up to massage their neck at the point that was hurting most. Crosshair noted the knots of scar tissue beneath their touch.
They sighed, reaching up to pull their hair forward, beginning to braid some of the long crimson hair. Crosshair could feel something emanating deep within their soul; an intense pleading for help.
The pieces came together. Red hair, blaster scar on the neck. This was Jaine’s body he was in.
“Up,” a stormtrooper ordered, opening the laser gate. Despite the resentment that boiled in her chest, she stood without hesitation, holding her arms out for the binders.
The pair of troopers led her through the facility past numerous cells of clones. He could feel her guilt at not being able to help them. She glanced up at one cell in particular as they approached it.
“Wait,” she whispered, her movement stilling as her heart dropped into her gut. “Where’s Fluke?”
One of the stormtroopers hit her shoulder with the butt of his gun. “Keep walking.”
She turned to face him. “Where’s CT-5121?” she growled.
“Went last night,” rasped the clone - Sig, she remembered - in the cell across from the one that used to hold Fluke.
Crosshair could feel the deep sorrow in Jaine’s heart and the tear that fell down her cheek.
“Good morning, Jaine,” that woman, Doctor Karr, said as the gate opened. “How are you feeling today?”
Jaine didn’t answer. Merely allowing herself to be pushed onto the table and secured in place.
“I’d like to offer you an opportunity,” Karr said, looking up from her datapad. “Answer the question and we don’t have to go through any of the pain.”
Jaine swallowed, her throat dry. “What question?”
“How do we find Clone Force 99?”
Crosshair felt her hesitation, before she finally answered.
“Who?”
Hunter wasn’t sure exactly what was happening if he were to be completely honest. He probably should be anxious and on edge. He probably should be worried sick about Crosshair. He probably should have some kind of feelings about the possibility that Jaine wasn’t truly in control of herself when she’d attacked them.
But he didn’t really feel any of that. He was a little nervous, concerned for his brother, and a little more compassionate for their former medic, but none of that was at the forefront, and wasn’t even really what he was focused on at the moment. No, he was focused on the woman sitting in front of him. He’d lost track of what she was talking about a few minutes ago, but he smiled and nodded when it seemed appropriate. He did note there was an odd… heat in his chest.
“Hunter?” Sinya said, tapping his arm. “You okay?”
He shook his head a little, trying desperately to ignore the buzz of electricity that flooded his body, originating from her hand. “Sorry, could you repeat that?”
Sinya giggled. “It didn’t matter.”
She smiled at him and he realized he’d probably do anything if it just meant he’d get to see that smile again. Her smile reminded him of the first time he’d seen starlight.
A sharp pang hit his heart.
Did I make Jaine feel like this? He thought. Is that why she called me ‘Starlight’?
“Hunter,” Tech called from the suddenly open door of the medbay.
Hunter hoped Tech didn’t notice the way he and Sinya sprung away from each other. He hadn’t realized they’d been so close.
“What is it, Tech?”
Tech eyed him suspiciously. Of course he noticed. “Crosshair is awake. He would like to speak with us.”
Hunter nodded, turning to give an apology to Sinya, who shooed him off with a “go”.
By the time Hunter arrived in the bunk rooms, Crosshair was sitting up on the edge of the bunk and Runi was still fussing over his vitals, despite the annoyance written plainly on his face. After another moment she gave up with a huff, rolling her eyes when she saw the smug look on his face. She muttered something violent about that expression as she passed him.
Omega ran into the room, practically launching herself at Crosshair. “You’re okay!”
“I told you he would be,” Tech pointed out. “And I am seldom wrong.”
Crosshair and Omega rolled their eyes in unison.
“What’s going on, Crosshair?” Echo said, trying to hide a smirk.
Crosshair glanced briefly at Omega before looking at the rest of them. “Jaine… won’t be telling the Empire how to find us,” he sighed, hating the way his voice shook. The air in the ship seemed to still.
“That’s a good thing, right?” Omega asked, looking worriedly up at Crosshair.
“Yeah,” Wrecker nodded. “If she doesn’t tell ‘em anything about us then we can surprise ‘em when we go rescue her!”
Hunter’s eyes narrowed on his youngest brother. He could hear Crosshair’s rapid heartbeat, despite the measured breaths he was taking. “What aren’t you saying?”
His intense gaze locked onto Hunter’s. “She can’t tell the Empire about us because she doesn’t remember who we are.”
The room went still as the weight of Crosshair’s statement settled over the squad.
“How could she just forget us?” Omega asked, her eyes welling up. “After everything that’s happened…”
Tech knelt down next to her. “It is not her fault, Omega,” he said. “Part of her curse is that she forgets things that are important to her each time she comes back. More often than not, it is people she cares about.”
“That- that’s not fair,” Omega whispered.
“You’re right,” Crosshair assured her. “But that’s why she had people like Sinya to help her remember.”
Omega scowled, but looked up at Hunter. “We have Sinya with us. We can go and save her and then Sinya can help her remember, right?”
Hunter sighed. His chest felt heavy. “It’s not that simple,” he explained. “Breaking someone out of Imperial custody would be tricky and we don’t even know where she’s being held, not to mention that we’d be walking right into the hands of the Empire.”
“But–”
“No, Omega. We can’t go after her; it’s too risky.”
Omega scowled up at him before storming out of the room.
“She would do it for us,” Crosshair hissed. “We always said we’d never leave our own behind.”
“And we haven’t,” Hunter growled. “She spent months trying to kill us–”
“That was not her fault,” Tech interjected. “We have learned that there was a chip implanted in her brain when she was on Kamino without us, after which she was put through intense conditioning.”
Hunter didn’t listen. He couldn’t. “Chip or not, she doesn’t even know who we are! For all we know she could hate all clones now and try to kill us the moment she sees us anyway.”
Crosshair spoke up. “She doesn’t. I don’t know who he was or what he meant to her, but she just grieved one called Fluke.”
“How do you know that?” Echo asked.
Crosshair glanced between Hunter and Tech. “I-I could feel it. It was like I was in her body. It was… strange. I didn’t hear the Chromira-”
“The who?” Echo and Wrecker asked simultaneously.
“And it didn’t feel like when she talked to me before,” he finished, crossing his arms. “It almost felt like- like it was Jaine who was reaching out to me.”

Tumblr media
The morning came quickly–too quickly–as Wolffe woke before the sunrise. With the time he spent in space, his body never followed the rising or setting of the suns, but rather a clock that ticked deep within his biology. It was both a blessing and a curse in his mind. On one hand, he never had to set an alarm, but on the other, sleeping in was never an option. Cara was still asleep though, resting against his chest under the protective covering of his arms. It would be a bit before she awoke, but that gave him time to think about his mission for the day.
He stared silently up at the ceiling and reviewed every step he needed to take to ensure she was cared for while he was gone. He only had one rotation to accomplish it all, seeing as he would be departing before sunset on the next rotation, so there was no room for errors or setbacks. He had to be calm, calculated, and resolute. Most of those traits came naturally to Wolffe, but when his daughter was involved, a lot of who he was as a commander fell to the wayside. It felt cruel to shove part of her out of his mind, but life was also just as cruel.
It was only an hour before Comet found his way to their room to relieve Wolffe. Ever the cautious man, he poked his head into the dark room to make sure it was safe to enter. Wolffe watched him with amusement, the light from the hall outlining Comet's form, and he would've said something, but he didn't want to wake Cara. The last thing he needed was for her to get clingy before he left for the diner. She knew he would come back later in the day, but it didn't matter to her; leaving was leaving. For Wolffe, a silent hand-off was a lot easier.
Besides, she liked being with Comet more than she liked being with him. At least, that's what he told himself when he had to make the tough decisions that made his daughter cry. Justification wasn't the right word for it, but it allowed him to be the bad guy when he needed to be and allowed Comet to remain the good guy that she needed in life. Even though Comet left when Wolffe left, in Cara's mind, Wolffe forced Comet to leave. She might not understand how the hierarchy worked, but she did understand that when Wolffe spoke, the others listened.
Carefully, Wolffe slid himself off the bed and placed Cara back down onto the indent his body made. Both men held their breath in anticipation, but she must have been very tired because she stayed asleep and barely stirred at the swap. In the dim light from the doorway, Wolffe and Comet exchanged silent words with the same hand motions and gestures they used on the battlefield when vocal communication was impossible. It was clunky, but effective, and got the job done. Once Comet was briefed, Wolffe changed his clothes and left for the diner.
His journey to the diner was uneventful, practically quiet. It was still early in the morning for Coruscant's surface layer to be fully awake, but the subsurface layer was still bustling from the nightlife and now busy setting up for their daytime clientele. The diner wasn't a fancy place, but it was clone-friendly and served good food at a reasonable price. Most clones visited the bars and enjoyed the revelry late nights, but any level-headed, seasoned commander would rather sleep all night and eat a hot breakfast than get a cheap lap dance and a wicked hangover.
It was also rare for multiple commanders to be on Coruscant at once, however at least one was always there–Fox. When Wolffe entered the diner, he knew exactly where to go; left and down to the last booth against the window. It was their usual booth, but usual meant they did this often, which was far from the truth. The last time they met up was during his last leave, months ago, and before that, it was nearly a full cycle. It's not that Wolffe chose to ignore his batch brother, but if he had to choose between seeing his family or seeing Fox, he would choose his family every time.
As Wolffe approached the booth, he chuckled. Fox looked as tired as always, but perhaps a touch more than usual. Fox held the rim of his mug against his lips, the steam wisping up in front of his half-lidded eyes, with his elbows resting on the table, and a blank expression on his face. It almost looked like the mug was holding Fox up, instead of the other way around. If Wolffe didn't know any better, he would've thought Fox was asleep with his eyes open, but he did know better–that was just Fox in his normal resting state.
Wolffe slid into the bench seat across from Fox and stretched his arms over his head before picking up the mug of caf his brother ordered for him. He inhaled the warm and bitter fragrance before taking a sip and then hummed in satisfaction with the familiar brew. There was nothing like a diner caf. No offense to his wife's caf-maker, of course, but something about a cheap diner caf made him feel like a real man. It was leagues better than what the GAR gave them, but not as good as the caf from the surface layer. It was a wonderful middle brew.
"So," Wolffe said as he placed his mug down. "How's the wife?"
"Fat and ugly," Fox answered nonchalantly, then took a sip of this caf. "At least that's what she says every time I ask, which apparently is too many times."
Wolffe laughed. "When's she due?"
"Couple more weeks," Fox said.
"Are you nervous?" Wolffe asked.
"Kinda," Fox said with a shrug. "The pregnancy's been rough on her."
"She didn't get better?" Wolffe asked, then took another sip from his mug.
"Nope," Fox sighed. "She got sick in the first trimester and it's been downhill ever since."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Wolffe said. "It's a good thing she has you to support her."
Fox huffed. "Yeah, support…" He took a long sip after that comment. "The only support she wants from me is to stop breathing so loudly. Some days I think she actually wants me dead."
Wolffe raised a quizzical eyebrow. Fox looked more like he was taking shots of his caf as if it was a cheap whiskey, rather than savoring it. "Are you okay?"
"Just tired," Fox said, then set his mug down and rubbed his face. "She doesn't sleep, I don't sleep, we don't sleep."
"The baby won't sleep either," Wolffe said. He chuckled knowingly to himself with a smile hidden behind the rim of his mug.
Fox shot him with an unamused look through his fingers.
"Sorry," Wolffe said. "But I've got some experience."
Fox waved his hand to dismiss the apology. "Anyway, we're here to talk about you, not me." He paused contemplatively. "I'm sorry about Maria."
Wolffe bit his lip and set his mug down. He stared into the dark liquid and fidgeted with the handle. "I… I don't want to talk about that."
"Okay…" Fox said softly. "Then what do you want to talk about?"
"Cara," Wolffe said without looking up.
"What about her?" Fox asked.
Wolffe tapped his finger against the table as he thought about how he wanted to ask what he needed to ask. "I'm redeploying tomorrow night."
"Already?" Fox asked. "She must be having a hard time with that. You know, since…"
Wolffe tapped his finger faster and harder against the table, the silence getting awkward.
"You did tell her, right?" Fox asked.
"It's better this way," Wolffe said, deciding not to answer the question directly. Keeping the actual words in his mouth made the idea of not telling Cara more palatable for him. Selfish maybe, but he didn't want to handle any more emotional drama. He wanted just a bit of normalcy before he left and then a clean break to harden his mind. It was better that way.
"For who?" Fox asked.
"Listen," Wolffe sighed. "I didn't come here for a lecture. I need your help."
"Wolffe, I know what you're gonna ask," Fox said. He shook his head. "And the answer is no."
"Fox, c'mon," Wolffe pleaded. "You're the closest thing I have to family."
"I get that," Fox said. "But my hands are tied. Between my duties to Guard and my sick, pregnant wife, who can barely take care of herself, we couldn't possibly look after her too."
Wolffe closed his eyes and threw his head back against the booth cushion. "Kriff."
"Besides," Fox said. "Cara doesn't even like me."
"That's only because the gray in your hair scares her," Wolffe said without opening his eyes. "Maybe you should dye it."
Fox huffed and crossed his arms. "My wife likes it and as long as it turns her on, the gray parts are staying gray." He grinned smugly. "She calls me her silver Fox."
Wolffe leaned forward and twisted his lip in disgust. "Oh, gross. Please keep that stuff to yourself."
"But seriously," Fox said, changing the subject back. "You know my situation. If anyone found out about my wife… my kid, it would all be over. I can't risk it. Not even for you."
"Thorn?" Wolffe asked.
"Nope."
"Hound?"
"Not a chance."
"Thire?"
"Never."
"Stone?"
Fox snorted. "I wouldn't trust him to keep a plant alive."
Wolffe groaned and hung his head in his hands.
"I know you have your beef with the Jedi, and I get why you don't want her in the Temple, but what about a nanny?" Fox asked.
Wolffe lifted his head and looked at Fox in confusion. "A nanny?"
"Yeah," Fox said. "We're hiring one for when the baby comes."
"What does it do?" Wolffe asked.
"Well, there are different types," Fox said. "Some work part-time and come to the home on certain days, and there are some that work full-time and live in the home. They do pretty much anything you want–the cooking, the cleaning, the shopping, the laundry."
"Really?" Wolffe asked. He crossed his arms, intrigued by the idea of a live-in nanny. "How much does it cost?"
"I don't know," Fox said with a shrug. "Her parents are paying for it since they physically can't help us with the baby. I guess we got lucky with that."
Wolffe huffed. "Yeah. Real lucky."
"Easy, vod," Fox said. "I'm not trying to rub this in your face."
Wolffe sighed. "I know."
"Here," Fox said, then grabbed a napkin and started to write on it. "This is the name and the coordinates of the agency we're working with. They're not that far from here, so go take a look for yourself."
Wolffe studied the words on the napkin, then looked at Fox. "You sure they're legit?"
Fox looked offended. "I'm the Marshall Commander of the Coruscant Guard. Don't you think I'd do background checks on every employee before I let them near my son?"
"So, it's a boy?" Wolffe asked, a smirk turning up on his lip.
"Yes, it's a boy," Fox said.
"Got any names picked out yet?" Wolffe asked, still smiling.
"Well," Fox said, "I wanted to call him Aran, but she wanted to call him Eli, so we compromised and his name is Eli."
Wolffe laughed heartily.
"It's not funny," Fox said, but he couldn't help cracking a smile himself.
"Why are we so bad at naming children?" Wolffe asked. "Maria insisted on naming Cara because she was afraid I'd pick out something stupid like, tooka."
"I mean, that's just normal clone naming conventions," Fox said.
Wolffe hummed, remembering back to when he and his wife discussed baby names. "But babies aren't clones."
"No, I guess they're not," Fox said.
Wolffe and Fox continued their conversation as they ate breakfast with both men reminiscing about simpler times and trading stories of newer times. It was more than Wolffe could've asked for. Although he would never admit it, he felt a touch lonely since his wife's passing. The men under his command were his brothers, but Fox was his equal, someone who could talk back to him, set him straight, and be honest. It was a rarity among the ranks with the commanders spread thin. He missed his batch brothers, and it was good to catch up with one.

Sola lay on her bunk, the steady sound of rain pelting The Marauder oddly comforting. They had just returned from a mission and were back on Ord Mantell for a few rotations, a nice break amidst the back-to-back jobs she and 99 were sent on by Cid.
She was trying to research their next assignment, but her eyelids were heavy in the rare tranquility of The Marauder. The boys and Omega were still at Cid’s parlor, having a drink and decompressing. Sola had her drink and retreated to the ship, wanting to take this opportunity to hit the refresher and relax.
Sola perked up when she heard footsteps up the gangplank, Hunter stepping aboard the ship.
Sola smiled, knowing he probably wouldn’t be far behind her.
“Mind if I join you?” Hunter took off his helmet and began undoing his armor.
Sola sat up more in her bunk.
“Only if you hit the ‘fresher first.” She lightly teased, watching as he meticulously stacked his armor near his bunk.
Hunter let out a low chuckle, now just in his blacks. “If that’s what it takes.”
Sola hummed in response, laying back down on her bunk.
Hunter stepped into the refresher and emerged not too long after in a fresh pair of blacks.
Sola scooted over in her bunk, Hunter settling in next to her. There wasn’t much room, but neither of them minded. Sola tucked herself into Hunter’s side, his arm keeping her close to him. She rested her head on his chest, and she heard and felt him let out a long breath.
They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the rain the only sound in the ship as Hunter’s fingers drew gentle circles on her arm, letting himself unwind.
Sola’s eyelids were fatigued again, Hunter’s warm body and steady breaths lulling her further into a state of relaxation, something they both realized they hadn’t had in some time.
Hunter could hear Sola’s heartbeat slow as she melted against him. Her scent enveloped him as he pressed his lips to the top of her head, feeling her snuggle even closer up against his body.
“How long do you think we have until they come back?” Sola mumbled, barely fighting off sleep.
“Not long.” Hunter’s own eyes were falling heavy, his body and mind begging for rest.
“Then we better enjoy the quiet while it lasts.” Sola murmured, threading her fingers with his across his chest.
Sola felt safe, unworried as Hunter’s hand gently squeezed hers. Feelings she thought she’d never feel again before being in Hunter’s arms.
Soon, Hunter’s soft snores joined the sound of the rain. Sola faded into a serene slumber shortly after, entwined in one another, content and at peace, at least for a little while.

Echo had expected things to be different when him and Kan got back to base, but he hadn't expected it to be so immediate.
They had barely set one foot inside before they were whisked into command, where Kan was informed that her skillset would prove useful for mission planning, and that she would take on more responsibility from now on, gaining the unofficial rank of Sergeant. She had been honoured, of course, but it felt like something that was very much out if her comfort zone. She wasn't a leader, she was a follower, and that's how she liked it. Though, if Rex had faith in her, she trusted his judgement.
Echo was happy that he'd be working with Kan more regularly now, but so was almost everyone else in the room. He couldn't blame his brothers, she was gorgeous, and almost elusive to most of them, having never spoken to them. He watched on painfully as she reunited with Howzer, jumping into his open arms and hugging him tightly, and as they stayed touching each other, catching up excitedly.
Then he watched her reunite with her other friends from across the mess, Oscar ruffling her hair as he hugged her from the side, and Teddy high-fiving her and embracing her for good measure for beating Howzer to a proper command position.
Echo felt so foolish.
Foolish that he thought he was special because she was kind to him, foolish that he thought he was lucky to get to experience her touch, and foolish for ever even entertaining the idea that she could possibly harbour feelings for him.
Kan was kind, but she gave out her kindness to everyone without exception. That's what made it so hard for Echo to feel negatively about her - it wasn't her fault, it was his. His mistake.
And now it was too late to do anything about it.
He had fallen for her. Hard. And now he would have to carry on as if she was any other person at the base. He didn't know if he could, and so, reluctantly, he tried to distance himself from her.
Kan noticed immediately when Echo started pulling away. For one, whenever he had to address her in the command centre, he would call her ‘Kan’. She didn't mind of course, it was her name after all, but she had got used to him calling her ‘M'aira’, and she much preferred when he called her that. He was the only one who did, and that's what made it special.
He also never came to see her in her office, never said a word if she ever sat with Rex and Gregor at meal times, never spoke to her before bed, and she hadn't looked into his eyes since the day they got back. It hurt her a lot, and the only logical conclusion she could draw was that he was embarrassed of her. Embarrassed to call her M'aira, embarrassed to talk to her, and embarrassed to even look at her.
She didn't know why he felt that way, but it was obvious that whatever bond they had created during their time away from base was just a one sided thing. That it hadn't meant anything to Echo.
Between that and her new command position, Kan was extremely stressed out.
Her brain was going at a klick a minute, unable to shut off from either mission plans or Echo. She couldn't focus, and the only respite she got was sleep but that would elude her because the cause of half her problems was sleeping right next to her. She had begun sleeping in her office again, though her back certainly wasn't happy about it.
Teddy was a perceptive clone, and he could see how haggard she had become. He contantly asked how she was, but she would always just say she was tired, that was it. She had none of the usual spring in her step, and after a couple weeks of it not going away, and only getting worse, he finally did something.
He dragged her outside after dinner, with the aim of getting her to relax. He took her over to the edge of the platform, and they sat down, looking out on the view of the deep reds and browns of the rocky terrain that surrounded the base.
“Here” He offered her his cigarra after he'd taken a drag, “To help you relax”
“No thanks” She said simply, accompanied by a weak smile.
“Kan…” Teddy began. He didn't really know what to say, but he tried his best, “What's going on with you? And I want a real answer this time”
Kan looked up at him sadly, her eyes glistening, before looking out to the view again. “I don't know, everything is just too much at the moment” She took the cigarra from his hand and took a long drag before passing it back.
Teddy watched on in worry, “What is? It might help to get it off your mind”
Kan sighed deeply, exhaling the smoke, “It sounds so ridiculous when I say it out loud though”
“I'm sure it doesn't, come on” Teddy urged, and he could see her cracking, beginning to open up.
“Well… for one, being a Sergeant is absolutely no fun” She said pointedly, and Teddy chuckled.
“Why not?”
“It's so much responsibility, I can't stop thinking about how my actions affect everyone here, how I could be the reason for someone being killed or captured by the Empire” She explained, her shoulders slumping with each word.
“Have you talked to Rex about it?” Teddy asked.
“No” Kan laughed, “I couldn't, he's such a natural, he wouldn't understand”
Teddy shook his head, “Just because he's a natural doesn't mean he lacks empathy. I'm sure he'd be able to help ease your worries”
“Maybe about that” Kan mumbled, loud enough for Teddy to hear it.
“What else is going on then?” He asked, taking another drag.
Kan looked out at the view despondently, slumped forwards onto her knees. He gave her the time to answer the question on her own time, which took longer than he was hoping.
“It's Echo” She finally whispered.
“Echo? What about him?” Teddy hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary with him.
“It's- We-” Kan sighed aggressively, “We were getting on so well during our mission, but when we came back, it's like he hated me or something. He never talks to me unless it's regarding a mission but even then it's more talking around me to other people, and he never looks at me anymore, I just-” She stopped herself before she could get choked up.
“You just what?” Teddy pressed.
Kan chewed on her lip, “I really thought he might like me back, you know?” She said quietly, and Teddy understood immediately.
He placed his arm around her shoulders and hugged her into his side. “I know, I know” He spoke soothingly, rubbing her arm.
Kan rested her head on Teddy's shoulder, “It's just embarrassing, to be wrong”
“Yeah, but hey, that's on him. If he doesn't like you, he's a di'kut”
Kan looked up and saw the small grin on Teddy's face, and her own lips curled up, “Yeah?”
“Absolutely, you're a catch” Teddy said, earning a small giggle from Kan.
“Thanks Teddy, so are you”
“I know” He smirked, resting his head against hers as they looked out again.
“Thanks for bringing me here, I really needed this” Kan spoke sincerely.
“No problem K” Teddy squeezed her slightly before standing up, “Let's go inside yeah?”
Kan didn't respond immediately, looking over the setting sun, “I think I'll just stay here for another moment, watch the sun set”
“Alright, I'll see you later then” Teddy said, giving her shoulder a supportive squeeze before walking away.
When she knew Teddy had left, Kan finally let herself cry.
She let out a choked sob, the product of bottling up her frustration, anger, sadness and embarrassment for weeks. Now that she had popped the cork, she couldn't stop the flow of tears that fell from her eyes. She pulled her knees to her chest and buried her head in them, her vision blurred and her breath ragged.
She thought of her mother and father. She wondered if they would be proud of the work she was doing. She thought of Master Unduli, she thought of Spider, she thought of Senator Organa, she thought of Rex, Howzer, Gregor, Oscar, Teddy, and finally, Echo. Every insecure thought, every nasty thing she ever had to say about herself clogged her mind in an instant, and she felt as if she couldn't breathe.
She let her legs hang over the side of the platform again and gripped the edges tightly. Her eyes were screwed shut and her breathing was only becoming more unstable, no matter how much she tried to calm it. Her stomach was in knots, she was choking on the tears that wouldn't stop falling, and her body was shaking involuntarily. She knew what this was, she had experienced them enough, and she just hoped that if she could grip the platform hard enough that it would subside quicker. She had no such luck.
She heard her name shouted, but to her it sounded feint, like she was underwater. She curled up again, facing away from the voice. She heard them again, and felt someone touch her back gently, though they might as well have struck her with lightning for how she reacted.
She flinched away, trying to find her voice, managing to choke out “Go away”
Her own voice sounded foreign to her ears in this altered state of being, but she couldn't think about it for too much longer before she was enveloped by a pair of arms. She rested her forehead on the person's chest, heaving and trying to calm herself. As she came down from the worst of it, something about the person felt so familiar, and she soon realised exactly who it was when they brought a hand to the bare skin on her back, and it was exceedingly cold and smooth.
She knocked herself backwards, falling onto her backside as she looked up at him, the catalyst of all her problems. Echo was looking down at her with worry painted on his face, and she frowned as her breathing evened out more. She scrambled from the floor and uttered apologies as she ran away from him, back towards the base.
Echo followed after her, catching up to her quickly and moving around her so he could stop in front of her.
“M'aira, what's going on? What's the matter?” He asked, placing his hands gently on either side of her arms.
Kan didn't say anything. She just stared at him, her chest heaving and a deep frown settled over her features.
“M'aira?” Echo said quietly, stepping towards her, but Kan stepped back a few paces.
“Why are you calling me that?” She tried to speak plainly, but her voice was still thick with emotion.
“What?” Echo asked, confused as to why she would ask that.
“Aren't you worried someone is going to see us talking?” She asked, her voice breaking.
Echos heart fell from his chest, “What do you mean?”
Kan could feel her bottom lip begin to quiver and she instinctively dug her teeth into it to stop it. She wasn't going to let Echo see her cry. Well, anymore than he already had.
“What’s going on M'aira, why are you upset?”
The use of the nickname once more sent her over the edge, “Because of you!” She shouted, though her anger was swallowed by embarrassment as she barged past Echo and made her way inside.
Echo stood frozen on the spot.
Because of me? But I haven't even spoken to her in… oh.
He quickly followed after her again, not entirely sure where she was headed but he hoped it was towards her office. He saw the door close from the end of the hall and heard the lock engage immediately after, something he didn't even know the door was capable of.
He knocked a few times, and heard Kan sniffle but she didn't reply.
“M'aira, please open up” He said gently, leaning his forehead on the door.
“Go away Echo” She replied, and Echo sighed deeply.
“Kandam'aira… please, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you”
The door then zipped open and he fell forwards slightly, finding himself in the room as Kan closed the door again.
“What did you mean to do?” She looked up at him sternly, her cheeks stained by tears.
“I-” He couldn't admit to his feelings right now, that would only confuse her, “I just thought you might want some space”
“Why would you think that? I thought we were friends, Echo. Friends at least look at each other from time to time”
“I know, I'm sorry, I guess I just figured that we'd been together for a while and you might be sick of me” He stated, though it came out more like a question.
“Well I don't” Kan crossed her arms, and Echo blinked at her.
“Don't what?”
Kan rolled her eyes, “I don't want space”
“Oh, right” Echo said awkwardly, and Kan felt her undeniable fondness for him returning as she looked up at his blushing cheeks.
She then quickly wrapped her arms around his torso, hugging him tightly, “I missed you”
Echo could feel his heart ache as she gripped him tightly, and he matched her hold, resting his cheek on the top of her head, “I missed you too”
Kan pulled back, looking up at him sheepishly, “I'm sorry you had to see me all…” She wiped her cheek, “Panicky”
“I don't mind, I'm just sorry that I caused it” He said, bringing his own hand up to wipe the wetness from her cheek.
Kan sighed, “It wasn't just you”
Echo gave her a questioning look and she shook her head slightly, “I'm just stressed, but I'll be fine”
“What are you stressed about?” Echo pressed.
“Nothing, I think I'm going to get an early night now” She said, opening the door.
“Hey” Echo gripped her shoulders lightly, “We can talk about it if you want?”
“Another time maybe” She smiled up at him, “Goodnight Echo”
Echo sighed with a worried smile, “Goodnight M'aira”
Kan's smile grew at the use of the nickname as she stepped away from Echo, hoping its return was permanent.

Into the Unknown : Chapter 4

Word Count: 4.7k
Warnings: light fluff
Rating: SFW
Notes: Please forgive me, I didnt run this past anyone and just decided to post since its been so long. Thank you for being super patient! life tends to get in the way quite often. Enjoy ^^
"ID please?", Vera handed the soldier her badge while examining other troopers and GAR personnel going through the same process to gain entry to the staging grounds for the republic cruisers. The giant metals walls tumbled into her view with a generous amount of clones walking to and from their assigned locations, "Okay, You check out. Welcome to the staging grounds Doctor. Right this way please.", he motioned towards the two troopers in blue... the same colors as Captain Rex’s.
"Thank you...", She said making her way as every step she took, eyes began to follow. Completely imbued on this woman in white. She was in her given medical attire wearing a white tunic, white pants and black boots as dark as her hair. It was atypical seeing a civilian women serving the republic but it was even more strange for the troopers to see a women in clone assigned uniforms. Though her sets where specifically tailored to her body, the design remained the same as the other troopers. She thought that would at least conceal a little- but attention was drawn and so were her nerves.
Pacing closer to her assigned escorts, "Doctor Cross!", a voice she happily recognized came to ear and when she turned around, she saw none other than, "Commander..!-", she hurried to him still shying away from the prying eyes that prickled her nervous system, "Its a relief to see you", she said exhaling loudly as she reached her arms around his neck pressing her body against his. The hug was unexpected but Cody wanted to take the moment in, realizing the ploy at hand. He winked at her and gripped her tightly, gently leaving his hands on her waist. "You're being deployed today, I came to make sure you got to the cruiser", he stated as he gently let go of her. Immediately- the eyes of the other troopers leave her, 'Thank the gods,' she thought as she blushed a little from Codys actions. She tucked a hair behind her ear peering up to the inspiration that lead her there, "Thank you Commander. Thats kind-", she winked back and continued, "I was told to meet the soldiers over there in blue." She pointed at the two soldiers who were just in the line of sight with blue markings, ones who armor was immaculately clean and the other with a blue handprint on his chest.
"Ah Fives and Echo", he exclaimed with a grin. "You know these men?", she questioned smiling back at the commander. He gently grins, remembering the moment him and Rex 'almost' saved a base trying to stave off a commando droid invasion led by General Grivous."Yes they are shinies of the 501st company. Commanded by Captain Rex, Ashoka Tano and General Skywalker. Good men, reliable...."
Hearing this information obviously stunned her as she closed her eyes whispering to herself, "of course", peering back up to the sky to regain her thoughts. She couldn't tell if she was feeling excitement or dread but Master Windu did warn her that she would be serving under a general with high casualties in the early morning briefing. "I see", she said, "Well, Im running a bit late, I should go...", she looked at him with a worrying expression as she finally gathered that shes putting herself in the same position her and her family were 10 years ago. Admittedly, she was scared. But somehow, as she turned to Cody who smiled kindly at her, she knew it was going to be okay. The Commander had a sense of her fear but he remained stoic and gave her a smile of confidence that went without words.... telling her she was going to be okay. Her heart throbbed as she returned the smile realizing that Cody was special. He saw right through her and came all this way just to see her off, despite his responsibilities.
The effort was there but... how to thank him? She inhaled deeply and exhaled, expelling the rest of her nerves and releasing the butterflies that have so casually made their appearance from the moment Cody said her name. "Thank you for seeing me off..... Commander", She planted a kiss on his cheek, wondering if that was maybe too much or too little. The hug was already a lot in front of this many people but the kiss sealed the letter for word to travel and even though they both knew that, he looked down to her and gently touched her chin, "May the force be with you...", he pinned his eyes on hers, slightly grinning as he went to put on his helmet. Their moment in pause informed them both that they did not forget their wondrous morning a few days ago. She felt the butterflies bundle deep in her stomach again as it did the morning they spent together. Only this time she did not have time or privacy to act upon her desire.
Deeply sadden by her thoughts of when she would see Cody again, she solemnly smiled, placing her hand on his chest plate, "and with you commander...", before turning away towards her escorts.
-
"Excuse me...", She said pulling the two troopers out of conversation, "My name is Doctor Cross, I was pointed to your direction, I'm supposed to board the Resolute at 0800. You wouldn't happen to be escorting me by any chance?",
"...."
"...."
Both troopers didn't respond only stared. Odd enough as it was, Vera continued, "....or maybe I interrupted the wrong troopers..?", she backed up a little and apologized for the intrusion but before she could turn and walk away, one elbowed the other, "u-uh Yeah.. y-yes, I mean no, erghmm... ", the trooper with a blue handprint on his chest piece cleared his throat as he gently pounded on his chest. "-Were here to escort you to the cruise ship...ma'am", finally responding, "Im CT-5555, but everyone calls me fives, this is Echo.", the attention shifted to the other trooper who was clearly in his own world but was so clean you wouldn't think he was a trooper. "Yes.. uh, pleasure to meet you Doctor."
Even though she couldn't see their faces through the helmet, she could tell that they were nervous. Very nervous. They all shook hands after introductions but Vera checked the time only to see that departure was in less than 10 minutes. "The pleasure is mine. Small note, don't call me ma'am.....-" She motioned her hand towards the cruisers, "-Shall we?", and started walking towards the gates.
Both Fives and Echos looked at each other, their minds meeting the same conclusion about their new.. Medic. "Ma'am…? Really?", Echo whispered to Fives ,"Shut up", Fives countered pushing his shoulder, as he took his leave to catch up to the doctor.
"So... seems like you know your way around...", Fives shyly states gripping the back of his neck, trying to start conversation. He was under the impression she might've been here before after her 'show' with Commander Cody. But he dare not ask and she dare not tell. "No, but while you guys are gawking at each other. Im the one running late.", she states, pushing forward. "I wonder why you're late.." Fives uttered under his voice before he was bumped into by echo passively telling him to shut up. Sure shes a tad bit behind after running into the Commander but those two? 'Ridiculous. They were definitely shinies' she thought picking up her pace to avoid the tardiness.
When Echo caught up to both of her he interrupted by mentioning he knew a shortcut to the ship. "Here, follow me". After passing through the gate and into the main building, they cut through several different hallways of the main terminal building, invading foot traffic to get to the overlook of the base. Once they stepped outside from the building, Vera walked to the edge of the overlook, viewing the hundreds of Republic Cruisers lining up and taking off from a base that seemed like it spanned for miles. She was in awe from the sight, beholden by the fact that many of these troopers who board this day may not return the next. It was a heavy burden to have in ones heart, realizing that every single one of these ships were filled with inexperienced troopers.... she couldn't imagine what it was like for the clones. The feelings they have leaving from the one place they ever known into a galaxy full of fire and fear. War had no place in Vera heart and each second she spent there reminded her of the dangers that lie ahead for not only her but the men she is now deemed to heal and protect.
Gods, what her father would say now- even her sister...
Amiss her sadness, as she peered over the sunlit base she was gently interrupted, "Doctor, this way", Echo said waving in the direction him and Fives were headed. They continued, rushing down stairs to get to the ground floor that lead out to the loading docks for the cruisers.  Vera checked her watch; they were just a couple minutes behind but nonetheless- "We're almost there. If Captain Rex says anything about us being late say that the elevator was out of service." Fives stated, "Like he'll believe that-", Echo chipped back, rolling his eyes at the obvious farce, "Why lie?", Vera wondered, trying to understand why they were so keen on a fib, "We were late because I was talking to the Commander…"
"I wouldn't call that talking.." Echo whispered to Fives who whole heartedly agreed. They pushed through the corridor to the assigned docking area and saw General Skywalker, his padawan, and Captain Rex standing at the entry point. "Sir!", the boys stood at attention saluting their leaders with Vera just slightly in front of them. "At ease boys", General Skywalker says as he walked up to Vera;
"My, my, look who's late." He announced folding his arms, "I was beginning to think you weren't coming", smirking at the young Doctor. She rolled her eyes and prayed he wouldn't be like this the entire stay. "Well considering you just walked up moments before I did, I could say the same thing for you... General" Vera kicked back returning the mischievous grin. Anakin laughed and the young togurta smiled exchanging glances with Rex, "As sassy and you are witty. You'll fit in just fine Doctor.", He turned to the young Togurta motioning her to join the conversation, "Let me introduce you to my Padawan, Ahsoka Tano."
"Its nice to meet you Doctor Cross.", the little padawan timidly said, checking out their new medic.
'She's so young', Vera thought concerningly as she kneeled down to her level, "How old are you little one", peering up into Ahsokas eyes, "I just turned 14", she responded. Obviously nervous but it would make sense being so small fighting a war this large.
"You are young but strong. I see the fire in you." She stood up and placed a hand on her head, " Its a pleasure to meet your acquaintance. I look forward to knowing you miss Tano." At first Ashoka didn’t know what to think about the interaction. But something about the doctor gave her a warm feeling she couldn’t quitee put her finger on. All she knew is that she was there to help and that was enough.
"Ahsoka, I would like you to give a tour of the ship and introduce Vera to her quarters." Skywalker said as he began to walk off. Captain Rex normally would follow but just for a moment he stayed, still peering at Vera. Obviously, their last meet wasn’t the greatest and Rex wanted nothing more than to fix it. Due to his position he was required to fix it, especially since she is now his subordinate and another soul to protect. Trust was everything and as he stood there quietly, he finally made a move setting his hand on her shoulder, “I’m glad you decided to join, welcome to the 501st”. The Captain still had his helmet on, but when they made contact, their hearts nearly skipped a beat in sync, feeling the same fire, the same pull, as before. However, he stood pondering on this unknown affection and brought himself to his senses letting go of her shoulder before turning to follow General Skywalker.
Vera had no clue what happened but did find this goodbye a lot better than the last- she couldn’t help but smile. "What was that all about?", Ahsoka said raising an eyebrow, "I'm not entirely sure…” Vera responded, but wanted to see what Tano thought herself, “-you tell me little one." Vera continued smiling down at her with a warmth only she could give.
Ahsoka looked at Captain Rex walking away as he gently peeked back before disappearing into the cruiser with his men and General Skywalker. "Maybe he thinks you're pretty?", she wondered looking up at Vera. They both giggled as Vera rolled her eyes, contemplating the uncensored words she said, "Yeah maybe...". The thought of saying that made Veras heart flutter because if that was the case then maybe starting over with him wouldn't be so hard.
"Well I guess its just you and I! Come on let me show you around!", Ahsoka said excitedly walking towards the bridge door that lead to the ship. Vera at least felt at ease with little Tano. Though oddly enough, being around her kept sending flashbacks of her childhood with her younger brothers and sisters. The lack of their voices and presence in this world rendered her stomach distasteful and what hurt the most was their undying memory haunting her every footstep- even now. Nevertheless, her and Cersi survived and there was nothing more she could ask for, making her promise to her sister even stronger.
Leaving them behind was the hardest thing she had ever done. Even letting Cerci go with Amadala was hard but, going through this process means that both her and her little sister will be more protected and in the end? That was the goal.
-
After a tedious meet and greet between the many soldiers and medics on the ship including Kix who will become the new medic captain once training was over, she was finally introduced to her quarters. A moment she’s been desperately waiting for. "Here we are!", Ahsoka exclaimed. At first glance the quarters were barren. All that contained was a bed practically carved into the wall, a desk in the center of the room, and a counter against the back wall. The bathroom in retrospect was compact, only big enough to fit a standing shower, sink and a toilet. Despite its compact design, It was the largest room the ship had and it was the privacy which she was deeply grateful for in a ship full of testosterone. "Thank you little one." Vera smiled, placing a hand on Tanos head. "Anytime! Ill let you get settled. We are due to take off at 1700. If you'd like... we can go eat together in the mess hall after you're done?", She happily asked. "Sure, Ill comm you when Im finished here", Vera smiled as she watched Tano excitedly depart wondering why she was so giddy about her being there and as she began to trail off, she looked around the room- It was such an empty space and didnt feel like it was a home. I mean.. military rooms are not meant to resemble a home, she knew that, but it did not seem welcoming and that was for sure.
"I should start unpacking...", she said walking to the cargo container that had all the things she brought. After her meeting with Generals Kenobi and Windu a few days ago, she got to learn more about her positions and responsibilities but that doesn’t mean she had all the information she needed to be successful. She sifted through her belongings, looking for her data pad that contained more information about her deployment, "Ah found it", she grabbing the device and settled herself on the chair of the desk, swiping the thin layer of dust off before she began to read over the medical detachment and emergency applied medicine for the 501st.
-
Some time passed and it was nearly nighttime. After a whole lot of research, revisions and data entries to the medical unit, Vera glanced outside the ship window that was nearly as large as the room, watching as the sun started to set. "Only a few more hours till we take off...", she said not knowing when she would be back- or when she would see Cersi next. She closed her eyes and began to pray to her gods:
'Protos and Secundus, Hear me for Im about to journey into the unknown, I seek your guidance...'
The Gods were not something she quite believed in but after her ecpeience on her home world... if there was a chance they were still alive and listening she had to take it especially since now she’s off doing dangerous things and as she continued to pray, a tone from the door quietly pierces the room.
She opened her eyes and felt the fire again, simmering just lightly enough to release the butterflies that have been cooped up since being there. It was Rex. "Come in", she said gently still sitting at her desk. She put the holopad down and glanced back towards the door, seeing that Captain Rex has made his first visit. 'That didnt take long', she thought as she watched him take a couple steps into the room. He started by taking his helmet off but- his look… it seemed like he had nothing good to say and Vera was worried that maybe their argument turned into blind hatred . Of course, she didn’t want to judge too hastily, that’s what happened last time and clearly it didn’t turn out well. Maybe… maybe he just had a really good poker face?
The over thinking grew, which was her cosmic flaw but, deep down she knew a different side of him resided and that was the person she wanted to know. She inhaled and invited him forward as he came up to the front of her desk standing formally with his helmet on his side. She met his gaze and realized they were both on the same page about finding the right things to say. The long awkward silence consumed them both until finally Vera broke the glass and made a quick decision to just... apologize. "Captain-", she started blushing a little, fixing a strand of hair that fell from her loose updo but, before she could even continue, she was abruptly cut off with questions that simply threw her off. "Doctor Cross, I haven't been able to personally welcome you on board...How are you doing? Finding everything you need?", she stared for a moment, shocked that they didnt pick up from the last conversation they had. Was this his way of forgiving? If only she knew.
He waited for her response as she stood there wide eyed. She snapped herself out of her state, simply responding, "Im well Captain thank you for asking. Everything's fine on my part. Ill let you know if I need anything...." she grabbed the upper part of arm making her body language present at wanting something more than just this. The room suddenly got warm as Vera was thinking of the million ways she could just come out and apologize. However, little did she know, the awkwardness didn't go unnoticed. Rex smirked a little because he had already caught on that she wanted to apologize and quiet frankly he wanted nothing more but to apologize as well. They obviously had a bad initial meet and both of them wouldve never guessed theyd be in the same room days later. Apologizing almost turned into a responsibility at that point.
She slid her hand down her arm and started lightly grazing the top of her fingertips together trying to piece together the words she needed to express her regret to him... but where to begin-, "Captain I-",
"Wait", he interrupted, musking up the courage to speak first. He motioned a few steps closer placing himself just inches from you. "Theres something I need to say...", Vera freed her hands resting them at her side, relieved he clutched the opportunity before she did. He took a deep breath and continued, "What I said a few days ago to you.. It was uncalled for. I deeply apologize and personally... I.." He rubbed the back of his head as a light touch of pink grazed his cheeks. "I wanted to thank you for being here-", bravely enough he admitted to his resentment from their first conversation, "- I wasn't expecting you to say yes or even be here. Specifically- um..." he clears his throat and averts his gaze for a moment, recollecting himself before meeting her eyes with an assertive look. "If were going to be working together, Im hoping you would consider starting over..." Ahhh the guilt. Vera was overcome by the oblivious and insensitive things she had said to him. It most definitely wasn't her proudest moment and most importantly, it wasn't his responsibility to apologize for her crude statements.
"Captain I appreciate that but you have nothing to apologize for. I stepped over the line with my.. comments. It should be me asking for forgiveness...", She confidently met his look. Implicating the earnest of her statement. But the look began to fade when they registered how close they were to each other. He took a step back quickly regaining himself and his thoughts, "Look, the fact of the matter is you're here now. You being here proves that you do care and that much I respect", he said holding out his hand, "My name is Rex-", He offered his hand out to her. Vera couldn't help but smile. This wasn't the way she would've expected this to go, it just showed how good of Captain he is. Vera took his hand, "Either Captain or Sir?", they both let out small laughs, "Im Doctor Vera Cross...", she said letting go of his hand. "A pleasure.. Doctor."
'Finally", she thought instantly relieved. There was no more animosity or tip toeing around each other. Just something fresh and charming. Nevertheless, questions still remained. They definitely felt something and they were both determined to figure it out, but with these new conflicting feelings with Commander Cody? Her body language was being read again as the Captain realized she had other things on her mind. "We leave soon. Most of the troopers are heading to the cafeteria to eat before the next mission. But upper ranks like us eat somewhere else. I thought Id extend the invitation..", Vera snapped back to the moment and smiled. Appreciating the thought but Tano had asked a few hours ago and she didn't want to abandon her. "Sure Captain, although Ill have to meet you there. Ahsoka asked to eat together..." she responded. The Captain felt slightly upset that she already had plans but he would never let it show. Which was something he was inexplicably good at. "Okay. Ill see you there then", he put his helmet on and began to walk away. "Oh and Captain-", Vera said. He turned around in hopes that she would've changed her mind... instead, "Thank you...", she expressed softly as he gently gazed upon her seeing the sincerity in her eyes making him blush. Luckily he had his helmet on and now,  though 'looking' at her became had newly became his guilty pleasure. He felt lucky for the armor. "Anytime.." he said smiling under his helmet before going about his way.
What bliss. Vera and Rex had their moment to start over. Moreover she realized that he felt as guilty as she did. In her prayers, she had mentioned her connection with Rex. What it was, why it was. "The force works in mysterious ways. Though I wonder what its plan is going forward." she said to herself as she pinged Ahsokas comm.
-
Shortly after dinner, the young padawan was called to the command bridge to plan the upcoming excursion for the capture of General Grievous, "I have to go Doctor, the lounge room is a few doors down if you like to check it out? You'll need this-" Ahsoka handed her a card with a red bar on the end, "only a select amount of people are allowed in the lounge. Most of the time Jedi use it to meditate and only some of the soldiers with higher rankings are allowed.... But its a great place to clear your mind", Vera obviously took her up on the offer and after saying their goodbyes, she made her way to a room that only contained a couple large windows, couch, and a small bar holding a couple bottles of very expensive whiskeys and wines. "How quaint. I guess this is where Coruscants investments go towards.", she said aloud feeling humbled that there wasn't anyone here which made sense since its a 'private access' room but it did feel rather lonely as she went to sit on the ledge of the window peering out as the ship began its grand adventure into darkness. She continued to watch as the ship broke the atmosphere delving into the grand mystery we call space, "Oh my..." Her eyes twinkled as the stars came into focus, glittering in the twilight of empty space as Coruscant began to fade. Everything sparkled in the darkness making you feel singled out in a void of nothingness though, Vera never minded that. Space was always such a curiosity for her.
"Its so beautiful...", she whispered to herself.
This was the second time she'd been to space. Bringing back unwanted memories but... things were different now. This was willing and she made a promise to herself as she peered out into the distance looking at the different colors of the stars that lit the universe, 'I will save as many as I can', placing her hand over her heart, swearing not only to protect but for salvation. She brought her attention to her reflection, thankful for all the little things that mattered that prepared her for this day. She wish her sister could see her now... and as she gleamed the door opened and in the reflection she saw none other than the Captain.
She instantly smiled
"Hello Captain.", She turned to him with a welcoming smile remaining in her spot as she wrapped her arms around her legs. The ledge was just big enough to do so and may have became her favorite spot on the entire ship. "Want some company?", he asked walking up to the bar pouring a couple drinks. "I wont complain..", She continued, looking out the window imagining all the worlds she would get to see good and bad. His footsteps trebled behind as he approached her, handing a whiskey glass and proceeded to sit across on ledge with her. "It never gets old.", he says sipping the amber colored whiskey peering out into the darkness with you, "and whats that?", she wondered as she brought her gaze to him. He was sitting on the ledge, facing her with one leg up and the other on the floor leaving an hand to hold the glass on his knee. He slowly leaned back against the wall and continued to look out simply responding, "the stars..", he took another sip giving a small laugh as he swirls his cup but as he looked up he saw Vera staring at him. "what?", he wondered raising a eyebrow taking another sip, "nothing, I just said something similar moments ago-", she swirled her drink around, smiling at her reflection. He loved the stars as much as she did and may have been the first thing they found in common. "The stars are no stranger to the universe yet, they remain one of the greatest mysteries in life... Regardless...", She took another sip, "Their beauty never gets old.." The whiskey warmed her chest but nothing warmed it more than the man sitting across from her and as they both agreed to their sentiments about the universe they sat there, quietly, enjoying their time together staring at the stars before the ship jumped into hyperspace,
taking them into the unknown.
