Beatus a Liebana, Commentarius in Apocalypsim. Illumination: Adoration of the Beast. Navarre, c 1090 CE .
* * * * *
“If greed were not the master of modern man--ably assisted by envy--how could it be that the frenzy of economism does not abate as higher "standards of living" are attained, and that it is precisely the richest societies which pursue their economic advantage with the greatest ruthlessness? How could we explain the almost universal refusal on the part of the rulers of the rich societies--where organized along private enterprise or collective enterprise lines--to work towards the humanisation of work? It is only necessary to assert that something would reduce the "standard of living" and every debate is instantly closed. That soul-destroying, meaningless, mechanical, monotonous, moronic work is an insult to human nature which must necessarily and inevitably produce either escapism or aggression, and that no amount of of "bread and circuses" can compensate for the damage done--these are facts which are neither denied nor acknowledged but are met with an unbreakable conspiracy of silence--because to deny them would be too obviously absurd and to acknowledge them would condemn the central preoccupation of modern society as a crime against humanity.”

Just about to dive in to my annual reread of Comm. I love all your work so much. I just wanted to take a moment to compliment your amazing writings skills.
I’ve been reading your work and for like at least 15 years, and what gets me about it (comm in particular), is that you were so young when you started it, and even though you’ve grown so much as a writer, it’s still totally amazing that some of the best scenes I’ve ever read are in comm. The emotional heartstring pulling, the unresolved sexual tension, the spicy milk! I hope you feel amazing about it. You are so talented!
Thannnnnk youuuuu. Honestly, it’s CRAZY to me how anyone can read it through because I feel like the changes in my writing as I got older as SO viscerally obnoxious and obvious that it’s almost humorous. But it is a very cool artifact in that way too, I guess. And still some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing.

not to mention that if no one ever wants to "invest time" in WIPs and perhaps leave a comment they are less likely to be updated... and vice-versa a nice comment on a WIP can inspire the writer to update (i have a fic which i update once a year lol, and idk it works). ive bookmarked and subscribed to fanfics which have not been updated in a long time just to get a notification a few months later that the author updated.
also im just now re-reading commentarius (marauders girlies know) for the nth time. it's unfinished, i think it's been a decade since the last update but god do i enjoy giving it a read every once in a while
i just saw a video on tiktok of someone complaining about fanfic writers who have the ✨audacity✨ not to complete a fic. that it’s rude, it’s inconsiderate, it’s disrespectful of the readers emotional investment. and then a whole bunch of commenters saying underneath that this is why they won’t read incomplete fics, that they’ve seen authors go from updating every week to horror of horrors only every month. and because i am a wise and mature individual i’m not going to stitch the video dragging them to hell but instead i’m coming here to you beloved tumblr dot com to bitch behind their back
because i know we’ve said this before but the emerging culture of fanfic writers as content creators and readers as consumers is fucking disgusting. it breeds attitudes exactly like this and turns something that is fundamentally anti-capitalist into another cycle of produce compete exploit where your worth is based on how quickly you can meet consumers needs
it’s called archive of our own for a reason. its about repurposing these stories for ourselves, for our own enjoyment and interest whether thats i want to right the wrongs of this author or i want to see what happens if this one tiny plot point changed or i want to make these characters tie each other up and fuck until they cry. its about sharing as a community, leaving these stories in a communal toy box so people who come along in a few months or few years can enjoy them too
tl;dr keep your fucking capitalist little mittens away from our stories

Did you know that the first map of the Himalayas was made in the 1500s by the Catalan monk Antoni de Montserrat, and it was so accurate that it was used by European expeditions until the 1800s?
Here's the story of a priest that was called by a Mughal emperor for interfaith intercultural dialogue and who ended up being -among other things- a royal teacher, a writer, a geographer, a fake Armenian merchant, and a prisoner.
Tumblr media
Antoni de Montserrat was born in 1536 in Vic (Catalonia). He studied in Barcelona (Catalonia) and Coimbra (Portugal) to become a priest and joined the Jesuits. In 1574, he was sent on a mission to Goa (back then a Portuguese colony, now part of India).
The Mughal emperor Akbar was an open-minded man. He was Muslim but wanted to learn about the other religions, so he called representatives of different religions to his court in Fatehpur Sikri. In 1579, he called the Jesuits to explain Christianity, and the Jesuits sent Antoni de Montserrat. Everyone in the court -Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus- knew that the point was not to convert others, but to reach a better understanding through debate.
Tumblr media

The emperor Akbar valued Antoni de Montserrat as a great wise man and chose him to become the tutor of his second son Murâd. Antoni learned Persian (the language of the Mughal court) and accepted. He remained close to the emperor and accompanied him in the military campaign when the emperor's step-brother started an uprising in Bengala. Crossing much of Northern India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tibet on elephant gave him the perspective to draw the map.
In the end, Antoni went back to Goa in 1582. There, he wrote a book explaining what he had seen in the Mughal Empire, the cultural differences he had experienced, the political organization of these territories, and describing emperor Akbar's court. This book is called Mongolicae Legationis Commentarius, and its descriptions of the lands he has travelled include the earliest description of Tibetans known in Europe since Marco Polo and the first ever map of the Himalayas.
Tumblr media
Antoni de Montserrat's map of the Himalayas and their surroundings, including large parts of what nowadays is India, Tibet, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Library of St. Paul's Cathedral, Kolkata (India).
This book explains cultural elements of the different cultures under the Mughal Empire and also the conversations Antoni had with the emperor about certain habits. For example, Antoni writes about how the Brahmans (upper caste Hindu priests) force widows to be burned alive in the same funeral pyre as their dead husbands, often (when the women resist) drugging them or through violence. Antoni tries to get emperor Akbar to stop this terrible tradition, but doesn't succeed. On the other hand, Antoni also tells the emperor Akbar that they should burn the "men who dress as women" who live in the emperor's court, to which the emperor bursts laughing out loud and doesn't give any consideration to. Despite their different cultural backgrounds, Antoni and Akbar were friends.
Antoni's time in the Mughal Empire ended in 1588, when the king Philip II of Castilla and I of Portugal orders Antoni and a young Spanish priest named Pedro Páez to go to Ethiopia to convince the Coptic Christian Ethiopians to get closer to the Catholic Christian Church. Then, Antoni and Pedro dressed up as an Armenian merchants to border the Ottoman Empire through Iraq, Syria, and Egypt, trying to avoid the pirates of the Indian Ocean. However, before reaching Ethiopia, they took a ship to skirt modern-day Oman, but the captain turned them in as soon as they reached land in Yemen. Then, Antoni and Pedro were taken on a camel caravan to the Sultan of Hadhramaut (Yemen), who imprisoned them until 1595 and then sentenced to galleys in the Red Sea, and later imprisoned them again. Luckily for them, king Philip paid their rescue and they were freed in 1596. With his body weakened by the galleys and the mistreatments of prison, Antoni retired to a convent in Salsette (modern-day Mumbai, India), where he died in 1600 right after having finished his map.
The Spanish priest who travelled with him, Pedro Páez, also wrote his own diary explaining what they lived. With his descriptions, we know that in Yemen Antoni and Pedro were given what he describes as a kind of herbal tea called "cahua, water boiled with a fruit named bun and which is drank very hot, instead of wine": that is a drink that was still unknown in Europe at the time, which we now call coffee.
Maybe you have heard the name Pedro Páez before, too. After accompanying Antoni to Goa, he went to Ethiopia again, successfully this time. In Ethiopia, he became the first European to reach the source of the Blue Nile.
Information sources: David Montserrat Nonó (La Mira), Sociedad Geográfica Española. If you want to read Antoni de Montserrat's book, it has been translated from Latin to Catalan and to Spanish by Josep Lluís Alay.

Hi!!! Love your fic and have read it more than once because it is just too good. No pressure on the next chapter but I wonder if you have recs to your favourite marauder era fics? (Is that weird to ask? Sorry I'm advance 🤦🏼‍♀️)
thank you for reading! and not weird at all—here are some of my favs, with the longer ones up top and the one-shots/shorter ones further down. i am assuming you mean school-era fic so i am avoiding recommending things that are post-hogwarts!
the life and times by jewels5 naturally
commentarius by beedaily (bee has plenty of other canon compliant short fic that i adore)
haggis from algernon by cgner & ghostofbambi
the white album by cgner
summer girl & earthquake drills by efkgirldetective (more sex-forward as the premise might suggest)
she's on hiatus but i have to shoutout bond & free by clarewithnoi
a trio of fantastic ghostofbambi oneshots: the early morning toast brigade, easy, bloody easy, two sides of the same coin
pretty white smile also by clarewithnoi is one of my favorite lily character studies—it's not afraid to go dark and i love it
more are in my tag jily recs if you care to trawl through!

Why don't you like Commentarius?
There are two options
A) because I hate the author
B) Bee has improved as a writer with age and experience and I have long preferred AUs (as evidenced by my own writing) therefore I much prefer her more recent work because IMO it's just better in every possible sense, which is how it should be. None of which is to say that I dislike Comm, because I will never say or think that. "C'mere" was a formative moment for me and I think everything she does, writing or non-writing related, is bloody marvellous. So hopefully that sets your mind at ease.
(the answer is B)

I thought your answer on jily and whether or not they were in love or if it was abusive super interesting!
Personally I’m not the biggest jily fan but that has more to do with the main tropes being used that I tend to find tiring and outdated. But Ive been trying to get more into it recently and it’s been hard finding fics I enjoy because they are either too snape bash-y or feel anachronistic in how they portray the relationship. When im reading jily I actually prefer the writer to lean into the outdated tropes instead of trying to make it fit the modern readers ideas of appropriate courtship behavior, because otherwise it doesn’t feel authentic to me. Specifically it bugs me when they make James a super feminist that would never ask Lily out more than once (I don’t think he’d recognize that as sexual harassment as a teenager boy in the 70s). I get that this is popular fanon right now but it’s been hard to find a fic that doesn’t have this.
So my question is do you have any jily fic recommendations that fit this description (minimal Snape bashing and time period accurate)?
Hi there!
By your wording, I'm not sure if by "time period accurate" you mean fics where he actually asks her out a lot. The beginning of your post seemed to imply that, even though I would argue that it's not the only time period accurate headcanon. Indeed, there are plenty of reasons someone in the 70s may not have repeatedly asked a girl out - from his ego being bruised by her first rejection, to he actually took no for an answer and that doesn't necessarily mean he's a super feminist icon. Not everyone who takes no for an answer is. :p
You may have more luck with old-time fic, tbh - the "ask her out a million times" trope was much more prevalent then, and people were not as feministically aware :p though Snape bashing was much more common. I actually feel that in most newer Jily canon fics Snape is portrayed as a well-rounded antagonist, rather than bashed.
So I'm going to start with some oldies:
I recently read Commentarius by @bcdaily and, while I wouldn't say I got the perfect 70s vibe from it (more like the 90s - it felt very accurate to the way I grew up), I enjoyed seeing in it a portrayal of James that I think most people wouldn't dare write today for fear, exactly, of him not being feminist/respectful enough to Lily. I won't get into details to avoid spoilers. (Very long and incomplete, but considered a classic.)
I also hear The Life And Times by Jewels5 features an immature James who grows up throughout the fic, but I haven't read it so I couldn't tell you myself. (Also very long and incomplete and considered a classic.)
If you enjoy the idea of James being an outrageous little shit for comedic effect, you might enjoy Procrastinator-starting2moro's fics. I haven't read Obsessive Lily Disorder since 2006 so I can't say I remember it very well but the title should give you an idea of how insistently he asks her out in it :p though there may be some Snape bashing in it.
For more recent works, I will gladly recommend everything by @nought-shall-go-ill, who creates the most atmospheric depictions of 70s/80s UK, and also likes Snape and enjoys nuanced portrayals of Jily.
Other writers whose portrayals of James I thoroughly enjoy and who do a great job of presenting James as the little shit that he is include @annasghosts and @ohmygodshesinsane.
And to finish with some self-recs, anything in my James Potter Is A Little Shit tag should be a good bet. I would give a shout-out to my older fics Birthday and Fascination, and my newer ones Written In History and Drunk With Power as the ones you may enjoy the most. And I'll gladly tout readers' favourites The Great James Potter and Mistletoe Mishaps as examples where James is respectful to Lily in ways that I feel are natural and reasonable for the era, all while he's still a little cocky shit.
Hope this helps! Happy reading!!

i'm very curious what are your amos diggory headcanons?
i hc him to be in the same year as the marauders but then realised that makes him a dad while still at hogwarts (i still wiggled my way round it cause i got attached and with it being a boarding school someone's bound to get pregnant)
also i saw that you kinda ship him with lily please tell me everything!!
ok ok yess
so i can never actually decide whether hes marauder year or like a year or so older. but i see him as a hufflepuff & (when thinking of him in the marauders year), hes like part of my popular group idk if you've seen me post about it or not? but its like edgar, benjy, caradoc, hestia, etc. i see him as like quite smart? like hes popular & on the quidditch team but does also study quite hard and cares a lot about his classes. also i loveee the idea of him having cedric whilst still at school, i hadn't actually thought of that before omg)
but yeah, the lily/amos thing came from the first marauder fic i ever read actually, commentarius by beedaily. its a jily fic where its like lily pov? mightve been her diary, and shes heavily crushing on amos in it, i cant actually remember if they date in it, but shes super into him at the beginning of it. and that kinda stuck with me, well a lot of stuff from that fic did so i always see lily being into amos for a while & going on a few dates, maybe dating for a few months or so. i think i wrote like a microfic before where it was amos & lily going on a date & james spying on them and him realising she acts to amos how he acts to lily (as in like. getting weirdly awkward and nervous and blushing and saying the wrong things) <333 whereas amos is a bit more like. "oh this is a date. cool. lily evans is pretty cute and smart ig. i'll see where this goes" (and lily is planning their marriage in her head, shes so lovergirl)

Hello Tumblr friends!
Sorry for being quiet. I do that from time to time, because you know, life…
Anyway, I know you’ve come to expect Jily goodness from me, and trust me Deerstalking: A Staggard Wild is still very much in the works.
However, I’ve recently come down with the itch to write about an entirely different ship in an entirely different fandom. Namely: Buffy/Angel (Bangel) from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I just couldn’t stop thinking about what was happening off screen. They are such a great, tortured, fated to love each other OTP, but because the show is focused on demons-of-the-week, the details of their romance get left out.
So I’m starting to remedy that by taking inspiration from @bcdaily’s epic Commentarius (because as you all know, I’m obsessed with her and all her work) and writing out all the off-screen Bangel moments starting in season 2.
If this is at all of interest to you, please pop by AO3 for a read.
The Boring Stuff: Some Assembly Required
The Boring Stuff: School Hard
and The Boring Stuff: Inca Mummy Girl
are all up and complete.
Hope y’all give it a glance.
