PSA- TAKE YOUR FLASHDRIVE OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER
If you are not using your flashdrive to actively back things up- TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER! DO IT NOW! RIGHT. NOW.
Yesterday one of my flashdrives stopped working. My mom took it to our local computer guy to find out what was wrong with it and the guy said the the ONLY way that it could POSSIBLY (not definitely, POSSIBLY) be recovered is by sending it to a FORENSICS COMPANY that charges NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS ($950) as a flat rate for this service. IF the stuff can even be recovered.
The computer guy said that he has seen all types of flashdrives, no matter the quality, fail because people don't know that they need to take them out of their computers when they're not using them. A few of the things that can happen are the flashdrive can overheat or a virus could destroy it if your computer happens to pick up a virus.
I have thousands of pictures and videos on that flashdrive, precious, precious memories of kids I've worked with that I may never see again in my life and now I might have lost them because I didn't know to take my flashdrive out of my computer when I'm not using it. The cute pictures of my three new kittens I've been posting? On that flashdrive. Memories from holidays and birthdays and camping adventures might be lost forever.
TAKE. YOUR. FLASHDRIVE. OUT. OF. YOUR. COMPUTER!!!!!!
(please for the love of all that is good share this so other people don't have it happen too)

My most elder millennial trait is that every time I buy a storage device for computer stuff, I stare at the cost of it like I haven't literally lived through the technology getting cheaper and cheaper.
But, like, you gotta understand, the first time I ever bought a flash drive was in undergrad because it was for a design class, and the computers in the lab didn't have the storage for all the files we'd need and then be making.
The prof said, "You need a 1 gig flash drive." And I went out to the Wal-Mart and bought one, and it was $30. Which was a LOT for my broke college student ass.
I am about to plug in an external drive that is 1 terabyte. It cost $47. To be fair, it was on sale. Marked down from $58.
Like, I need you to understand that this flash drive on Amazon is equal to what I bought all those years ago, okay. This would be the one the prof suggested. And it's 127 gigs LARGER and nearly 1/3rd the price. (Literally, this is the brand I bought).
I would have been about 22 when I bought that first flash drive. I'm 42. In twenty years, we've gone from the astounding idea you could carry an entire gig in your pocket to the expectation that you'll need a terabyte at some point.

bad measurement idea: bacteriophage genomes. instead of knowing how many ‘bytes’ you have left, you can now know how many bacteria-eating single-called organisms you can store on my electronic device. one bacteriophage (bct) is about 84.5 kilobytes

A couple of updates
First of all, I still have plans for the video I want to do with regards to my NAS. I’m probably going to need to keep it at 2x 1TB SSDs for the time being, till I’m able to afford the upgrade to 2TB SSDs, but at the same time, 2x 2TB SSDs currently cost a little under the price of a 16TB HDD, so I probably should just focus on those exclusively for now! I also need to work out how to reach the…

Again with the praises of external storage
Want to know what I don’t have on my vacation? Safe and reliable non public wifi I would trust.
Want to know what I do have? An external hard drive with media. No subscriptions, no disappearing from streaming services, no buffering, just binging.

okay but the fact that prior to the 11 years of missing time in count of monte cristo jail, Caleb’s last lucid social interaction was a night of literal carnage and murder and prior to that the group hobby was also in fact carnage and murder and being in awkward teen romance era and being smacked around and magically vivisected by his professor
Then his most recent social interaction was some straight feral absolute roughing it with an alcoholic kleptomaniac goblin
and he’s going from that to being expected to function at least somewhat appropriately in a team-based friend group
Like…?
