From Vision to Structure | How a Commercial Estimating Service Shapes Design Decisions
Introduction
Every commercial construction project begins as an idea—a vision on paper that must be translated into a functional, cost-effective structure. While architects and engineers give form to the concept, a commercial estimating service plays a crucial, often underappreciated role in turning vision into viable reality. By integrating cost insights into early design phases, these services shape projects not only aesthetically but economically. In today’s cost-conscious market, design decisions must reflect budget realities from day one—and that’s where a commercial estimating service makes its mark.
The Strategic Importance of Early Estimating
The earlier a commercial estimating service is involved, the more impact it can have. Engaging estimators during the conceptual or schematic design phases allows them to influence key decisions about materials, structural systems, building layout, and more. This collaboration helps avoid costly redesigns down the line by ensuring alignment between the project vision and the available budget from the outset.
Balancing Aesthetic Vision with Budget Reality
One of the most challenging aspects of design is balancing form with function—and cost. A commercial estimating service helps bridge the gap between architectural creativity and financial feasibility. By providing cost scenarios for different design approaches, estimators empower project stakeholders to make informed choices that don’t sacrifice visual appeal or building performance.
Guiding the Selection of Materials and Systems
Material selection is one of the biggest drivers of project costs. A seasoned commercial estimating service offers deep knowledge of material alternatives, their associated costs, and performance trade-offs. Whether it's choosing between steel and concrete framing, curtain wall systems versus standard glazing, or luxury versus economy finishes, the estimator provides comparative cost data to guide smart decisions.
Value Engineering Without Compromise
Value engineering is a powerful tool in the design process. A commercial estimating service excels in identifying areas where cost savings can be realized without degrading the integrity or quality of the project. This might involve suggesting prefabricated components, optimizing mechanical systems, or adjusting layouts to reduce waste. The key is collaboration—not simply slashing budgets, but preserving the original design intent while improving cost efficiency.
Helping Avoid Scope Creep
As designs evolve, it's common for features to be added without a clear understanding of cost implications—a phenomenon known as scope creep. A commercial estimating service keeps this in check by tracking changes and updating cost models in real time. Their oversight helps stakeholders stay within budget, preventing surprises during bidding or construction.
Supporting Design-to-Budget Strategies
In many projects, the budget is fixed before the design even begins. A commercial estimating service enables a design-to-budget approach by reverse engineering the design process. Instead of creating a design and then pricing it, estimators provide cost benchmarks that guide architects and engineers as they develop the design, ensuring it remains within financial constraints from day one.
Collaboration with Architects and Engineers
Modern estimating is not done in isolation. Leading commercial estimating services embed themselves into the design team, participating in workshops, design charrettes, and feasibility studies. Their role is not just about numbers—they help shape decisions, manage expectations, and contribute to smarter, more buildable designs.
Building Trust with Developers and Owners
Owners and developers rely on clear, reliable cost forecasting to secure financing and attract investors. A commercial estimating service supports this by producing detailed and credible preliminary estimates that reflect real-world conditions. These early estimates often serve as the foundation for pro formas, lender negotiations, and capital planning.
Integrating Digital Tools for Smarter Decisions
Advanced estimating tools allow commercial estimating services to visualize cost data in new ways. From parametric estimating based on building characteristics to integration with BIM models, technology enables real-time feedback loops between design decisions and their cost impact. This level of insight is invaluable in a fast-moving project environment.
Conclusion
A commercial estimating service is more than just a cost calculator—it’s a strategic partner in the design process. By shaping decisions from the earliest stages, it ensures that architectural vision and financial reality grow hand in hand. In today’s complex, budget-sensitive environment, this collaboration isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

What is a Solenoid Valve?
A solenoid valve uses an electric current to generate a magnetic field within a coil, which moves a plunger to open or close the valve. Key components of a solenoid valve include:
The coil which creates the magnetic field.
The magnetic force actuates the plunger or armature.
The valve body contains the flow path and ports controlled by the plunger’s movement.
How Solenoid Valves Function in Pneumatic Systems
Controlling Air Flow
In pneumatic systems, solenoid valves are pivotal in regulating airflow. They electrically control the valve’s opening and closing, allowing for precise airflow management. This control can range from simple on/off functions to more complex modulation, where the flow rate is adjusted to meet the specific demands of the application. The efficiency of these systems largely depends on the ability of solenoid valves to regulate this flow accurately, ensuring the smooth operation of pneumatic machinery and equipment.
Response Time and Precision
The quick response time and precision of solenoid valves are crucial in pneumatic operations. These valves can open and close swiftly, often in just a few milliseconds, allowing immediate reaction to control signals.
This rapid action is essential in applications where timely responses are critical, such as in automated assembly lines or precision machining processes. The precision with which these valves operate also ensures accuracy in controlling pressure and flow rate, leading to enhanced performance and reliability of pneumatic systems.
Types of Solenoid Valves in Pneumatic Systems
Pneumatic systems utilize various solenoid valves, each suited for specific applications. Direct-acting solenoid valves, for instance, are typically used for smaller flow requirements and operate directly by the magnetic force of the solenoid.
On the other hand, pilot-operated valves use the solenoid to control a pilot valve, which then manages the main valve function, making them suitable for larger flow capacities. Other types include two-way, three-way, and four-way solenoid valves, each designed to control airflow differently, catering to a wide range of pneumatic applications.
Applications of Solenoid Valves in Pneumatics
Solenoid valves have a broad spectrum of applications in various industrial sectors due to their efficiency and reliability in controlling airflow. In automation and manufacturing, they are instrumental in operating pneumatic tools, maintaining actuator movements, and managing assembly lines with precision. These valves are vital in ensuring synchronized and automated control in processes requiring rapid and accurate manipulation of mechanical parts.
In HVAC systems, solenoid valves are critical in regulating air and temperature control, contributing to energy efficiency and system responsiveness. Their application extends to pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and automotive industries, where they aid in packaging, production processes, and system maintenance tasks. This wide array of uses underscores the versatility and indispensability of solenoid valves in pneumatic systems across various industrial landscapes.
Selecting the Right Solenoid Valve for Your Pneumatic System
Factors to Consider
Choosing the right solenoid valve for a pneumatic system hinges on several critical factors. The pressure range of the system is paramount; selecting a valve that can handle the system’s maximum operating pressure is essential for safety and efficiency. The valve size also plays a crucial role, as it must correspond to the flow rate requirements of the system – a mismatch can lead to inefficiency or system failure. Additionally, material compatibility is vital, particularly in corrosive environments or with specific cleanliness requirements. The valve material should be compatible with the media it controls and the external environment to ensure longevity and reliable operation.
Common Challenges and Solutions
Solenoid valves in pneumatic systems can encounter several common challenges. One issue is rapid wear and tear, often due to high cycling frequencies or inappropriate material choice for the specific application. Using valves with materials suited to the operating environment can mitigate this. Another challenge is coil burnout, typically caused by overvoltage or continuous operation beyond the duty cycle. Ensuring proper voltage supply and choosing a valve with an appropriate duty cycle for the application can prevent this issue.
Additionally, valves might fail to open or close correctly due to particulate contamination; regular maintenance and the installation of filters can help keep the systems clean and functional. Addressing these challenges proactively is key to maintaining the efficiency and reliability of pneumatic systems.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting of Solenoid Valves
Maintaining solenoid valves ensures their longevity and optimal performance in pneumatic systems. Regular maintenance should include cleaning and inspecting the valves for signs of wear or damage, particularly in the diaphragm or seal areas, which can lead to leaks or malfunction. It’s also important to check the coil and connections for any signs of corrosion or loose wiring, as electrical issues commonly cause valve failure.
One common problem regarding troubleshooting is valves needing to be opened or closed properly. This issue can often be traced back to a power supply problem, such as a faulty coil or an inadequate voltage. Another typical issue is internal blockage; contaminants in the system can obstruct the valve’s internal components, preventing it from functioning correctly. Regular cleaning and the use of filters can help prevent this.
When a valve fails to operate, it’s essential to verify that the electrical supply is functioning as intended and inspect the valve for any mechanical obstructions or damage. If the problem persists, consulting the manufacturer’s guidelines or seeking professional assistance is advisable to ensure proper handling and repair. Regular preventive maintenance and timely troubleshooting are key to prolonging the life of solenoid valves and maintaining the efficiency of pneumatic systems.
Conclusion
Understanding the function of solenoid valves, such as the Burkert 3-2 Way Valves, in pneumatic systems is essential for designing and operating these systems efficiently. Their role in controlling and regulating airflow is crucial across various industrial applications, making them a key component in automation, manufacturing, and HVAC systems. By selecting the right solenoid valve – taking into account factors such as pressure range, valve size, and material compatibility, as exemplified in the precise engineering of Burkert 3-2 Way Valves – and ensuring proper maintenance and troubleshooting, one can significantly enhance the performance and longevity of these systems.
It’s important for engineers, technicians, and system designers to grasp these aspects of solenoid valves, including specialized types like Burkert’s, to ensure they are fully leveraging their capabilities for optimal system efficiency and reliability. With the right knowledge and approach, solenoid valves, particularly those with the sophistication and reliability of Burkert 3-2 Way Valves, can substantially contribute to the smooth and effective operation of pneumatic systems in diverse industrial environments.

How would the yandere diluc, kaeya, Childe ect, deal with a reader who has severe asthma??? They basically can't keep her locked up 24 hours a day in a room xD
Breathless Devotion
Synopsis: A delicate darling with severe asthma? Someone who couldn’t be locked away forever without risking their life? For a yandere, that was an infuriating challenge. Because while they wanted to keep you safe, protected, theirs, they couldn’t keep you locked up like a caged bird. But that didn’t mean they wouldn’t find a way. Pairings: [Separate] Yandere Diluc, Kaeya, Childe, Alhaitham, Cyno x Reader with Severe Asthma
Diluc – The Overprotective Shadow
"If I could, I would keep you inside the winery forever… but I suppose that isn’t possible."
Diluc hated how fragile you were.
He’d already lost too much. He wouldn’t lose you.
But keeping you inside all the time would only worsen your condition, and that was unacceptable.
So instead, he controlled your entire environment.
You were kept at Dawn Winery, where the air was clean and fresh.
Any dust, smoke, or potential triggers? Eliminated before they could ever reach you.
He personally hand-picked your medications, consulting with every doctor in Mondstadt to ensure you had the best treatment.
If you needed to go outside, he was the one to escort you—always making sure you didn’t overexert yourself.
But the moment you tried to argue, the moment you said you wanted to live freely—
His eyes darkened.
"Freedom means nothing if you can’t breathe, my love."
And with that?
You realized—you weren’t going anywhere.
Kaeya – The Manipulative Caretaker
"Oh, you want to go outside? I don’t know… what if something were to happen? You wouldn’t want me to be heartbroken, would you?"
Kaeya took a different approach.
He knew he couldn’t physically restrain you 24/7, but he didn’t need to.
Instead, he used your condition against you.
Any time you wanted more freedom? He reminded you of how dangerous it was.
He would guilt-trip you: "What if you have an attack, and I’m not there to save you?"
He intentionally made you reliant on him for medications, check-ups, and comfort.
If you ever had a severe attack, he was the one holding you, whispering, "See? This is why I worry."
He never made you feel like a prisoner.
No, instead—he made it feel like you needed him.
Because the moment you believed that?
You would never try to leave.
Childe – The Possessive Protector
"You’re too fragile, little lamb. I can’t let anything happen to you."
Childe was paranoid.
He was used to blood, war, and battle—but now, his biggest fear was you not being able to breathe.
He kept personal healers around you at all times.
He never let you go anywhere without at least three guards.
Any time you so much as coughed, he was hovering, panicking.
He considered locking you up completely—but after seeing you struggle from lack of fresh air, he compromised.
So instead, he built a "safe space" for you—a beautiful estate where you could roam freely…
As long as you never left.
"I just want to protect you, darling. You understand, don’t you?"
And with his grip so tight on your wrists, his lips pressing to your forehead—
You knew you had no choice.
Alhaitham – The Calculated Observer
"Your condition limits you, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work around it."
Alhaitham was practical. Logical. Unshakeable.
He didn’t let panic control him like Childe. He didn’t smother you like Diluc.
No, he calculated everything.
Your schedule was strictly planned—ensuring you never overexerted yourself.
He personally researched every possible treatment to mitigate your condition.
He designed a custom-built home with ventilation systems to keep the air perfectly clean.
He had doctors on standby, but only when he deemed necessary.
He didn’t stop you from leaving the house completely…
But he made sure you never had the opportunity to escape.
Because no matter what, he was always ten steps ahead.
"You might think you have freedom, but let’s not be foolish."
"You belong to me."
Ayato – The Gentle, Yet Unyielding Cage
"I can’t allow anything to happen to you. Please… don’t make this harder for me."
Ayato is subtle but firm. He won’t lock you away—he’ll simply make it so you never want to leave.
Your health is his top priority. He ensures your room is immaculate, free of any possible asthma triggers.
He won’t force you into confinement. Instead, he’ll gently persuade you until you believe it was your choice to stay.
Doctors are always nearby. If you have an attack, the Kamisato Clan’s best healers are instantly at your side.
If you push too hard? He’ll remind you just how fragile you are—and how devastated he would be if anything happened to you.

Elon Musk Wants to Get Operational Control of the Treasury’s Payment System. This Could Not Possibly Be More Dangerous
I understated the extremity and danger of the situation we’re in even as a Judge on Friday issued a more comprehensive injunction against the executive orders which were designed to impound funds, OMB guidance or not, across the federal government. I also understated all the things ordinary Americans are in “danger” of learning about. It's now not just the “legal plumbing,” it's the payments plumbing too. This is now also the closest thing we’ve ever had to a payment system constitutional crisis.
So what happened? According to reporting on Friday — first at the Washington Post and then in more detail from CNN as well as the New York Times — the Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury David Lebryk has been put on paid administrative leave and plans to resign after refusing to give Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) access to the operational details of the Treasury’s payment system and the data it processes. In particular, Musk’s DOGE team has been asking for what the New York Times reporting refers to as “source code information” since December and has been rebuffed. The CNN reporting specifically states that they were inquiring about the technical ability to stop payments.
Lebryk's understanding of the operational systems that undergird the functioning of the United States Treasury is far and away unparalleled. In particular, he is widely credited with being the person who is overwhelmingly responsible for the undisrupted continuity of cash inflows and outflows at the Treasury during the recurrent debt ceiling crises of the past 15 years while concurrently ensuring the debt ceiling limit was not breached.
[...] The danger is also not in the near future, it is here. Follow up reporting from the New York Times Saturday evening in an article straightforwardly informed readers in its headline that “Elon Musk’s Team Now Has Full Access to Treasury’s Payments System.”
[...] The internal treasury payments systems must function correctly; it just also matters what purposes it is being designed for.
Musk and his cronies are clearly aiming to redesign the payments system to serve their agenda. This is not the attitude of people who are trying to simply technocratically make the payment system more “efficient.” They have a very clear and specific agenda, which involves unilaterally cutting spending, particularly spending they perceive to be going to their ideological foes. Is “Wokeness,” the “Green New Deal,” “Marxism,” and “Gender Ideology” going to be the new definition of an “improper payment"?
[...] Without political control of the payment's heart, the Trump administration and Elon Musk must chase down every agency and bend it to their will. They are in the process of doing that, but bureaucrats can notionally continue to respect the law and resist their efforts. They are helped in this effort by court injunctions they can point to. This is bureaucratic trench warfare. But if Musk and Trump can reach into the choke point, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, they could possibly not need agency cooperation. They can just impound agency payments themselves. They could also possibly stop paying federal employees they have forced on paid administrative leave, coercing them to resign.
[...] For the past 36 hours (writing these words at Midnight on Saturday) my mind has returned over and over to the idea that they have been asking for “source code information” to the Treasury’s internal payments system.
[...] Anyone who knows or has known computer programmers of mission critical legacy IT systems can tell you about the stories of rafts of consultants who have come and gone attempting to understand how the system works so they can “modernize” it on the cheap. The vast majority of the time these consultants are either not able to do what they promise or are honest about the cost of updating the system without a mission critical system “going down,” leading management to balk.
[...] Does Elon Musk understand any of this? Does he have any grasp of the scale and complexity he is trying to reach into and exercise “influence”? Currently the most urgent and profound danger is not what he intends to make this sprawling apparatus do. The most immediate danger is what might break in the process of trying to get this apparatus to do what he wants.
[...] Elon Musk, however, has never shown respect or understanding of the concept of a mission critical IT system. All he sees is “inefficiency” because he doesn’t understand that there are some things in this world that need to function no matter what and you spend the additional money to make sure it runs, including when it's being updated.
This is ultimately not that big a deal when it comes to Twitter — Twitter can go down for a few hours, even a few days. [...] To put that another way, the same cannot be said about the system that makes sure the federal government is able to make payments reliably and on time. [...] It's also important to state that the number of people who comprehensively understand these legacy IT systems can likely be counted on two hands — and that may be optimistic.
[...] There is nothing more important on the entire planet than getting Elon Musk and DOGE out of the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and allowing career civil service employees to run the Treasury’s internal payments system without capricious and self-serving interference from billionaires and their allies. This effort must fail if we are to safeguard any semblance of due process and lawfulness in the executive branch. A vague anonymous promise that DOGE only has “read only” access is not enough. They need to be rooted out so that we can return to the slower moving, less dangerous, “five alarm fire” constitutional crisis we were having as of Friday morning.

Every race should have distinct, useful traits or strengths. Every class should be quality in its own unique way and handle its own particular niche. Every stat configuration should lend itself to combat/gameplay style.
If you can consult a guide that instructs you step-by-step what class to choose, what race to choose, and what stats to distribute at what specific level to create the inarguably best build, the devs have failed to make a truly engaging and flexable gameplay system.
Someone once asked on r/dos2 what the #1 optimal min-maxing configuration was. Everyone replied that it doesn't exist. Every configuration has positive and negative aspects to account for during gameplay, so just choose what seems cool.
This person argued that that's nonsense, every game has an optimal build. That it is impossible not to. They got downvoted into the pits of hell lmao and everyone kept trying to explain to them that dos2 is such a tightly designed game that such an oversight simply does not exist.
There is no One Best Class, there is no One Best Race, there is no One Best Stat Distribution, there is no One Best Party Configuration. Everything has positives and negatives to account for.
I feel like that guy played a lot of bad/old rpgs in his time. And more than likely a lot of them were mmos.
Before bg3, basically any list of "best crpgs" had dos2 sitting at #1, and it was there for a reason. Larian fucking tore it up designing that game.
Which race to choose? Humans are economical, lizards are persuasive, elves provide otherwise inaccessable lore, idk what dwarves do I never play one lol, undead change up gameplay fundamentally. And that doesn't account for storytelling aspects.
Which class? All of them have their own strengths. Elementalists are squishy as fuck but they dominate surface effect control (extremely important in this game) and mass damage/crowd control. Rogues are also squishy and do pretty low damage, but their single-target debuffs are lethal. Summoners can't do a lot on their own but once you hit summoning level 10 (especially if you have gear to push it even higher) your summoned creature can carry entire combat scenarios solo. Inquisitors can absorb massive damage and they have superb crowd control. Necromancers can summon, debuff, and heal. Don't get me started on hybrid classes and skill synergies. And oh my lord if I talk about home-brew class creation I can be here all day.
Stat distrobution? Depends entirely on your gameplay style and personal preferences. Wanna get rich? Points into bartering, thievery, and loremaster. Not really a combat guy? Persuasion (you can literally tell the end-game boss to kick rocks and win the game without a single strike if you play it right). Want lore and puzzle hints, especially pertaining to the entirely optional side-plot around the squirrel/cat skeleton pair that follows you through the game? Petpal. Wanna hit stuff harder? Warfare. Tanking? Constitution. Crit-focused? Scoundrel. I could go on.
Always get Morning Person tho lmfao it'll save your sorry hide early game.
Which party members? Because all of their classes can be changed without any interruption to narrative flow and cohesion (unlike bg3, which I've posted about in the past), its simply who seems the most interesting. You have a little chat in the starting zone, they give you a quick taste of their basic story and personality, and you simply pick whoever seems the most interesting.
I forgot where I was going with this post ngl. Something something Larian are masters of rpg game design. Dos2 is a masterpiece. Bg3 is a glorified dos3 with a dnd coat of paint. I want to give Larian 80 billion dollars simply out of appreciation for their craft. I'm waiting with bated breath for dos3 proper.

"Explorers! A PMD RPG": What To Expect - Post 1
Heya! Since we're on the run-up to release on August 2nd, I thought I'd make a series of posts discussing what you can expect from this PMD TTRPG system.
This book is a meaty 200+ PDF with incredible art from the PMD Community, of which each artist has given their express permission for usage. So, needless to say, we've got a lot to cover -- I'll try to do two parts per post!
Character Creation (Part 0): Preamble
For "Explorers! A PMD RPG", I devoted a lot of development time into character customisation. It was a big part of my design focus.
I wanted to make sure people could play their chosen Pokémon without fear of being pigeonholed by stats, movelists, abilities, etc.
If people want to play their Pokémon similar to that, that's cool, and the system can allow for that. But I wanted to account for people who wanted to try something new with a Pokémon, or felt their favourites wouldn't "hold up" in the course of an adventure.
So.... how'd I go about achieving that? Let's start with...
Tumblr media
Character Creation (Part 1): Choose Any Pokemon!
A big part of character creation for a game all about BEING a Pokemon is giving control to the player. So, let's start with the basics:
You can play ANY* Pokemon you'd like in "Explorers! A PMD RPG".
Now, you probably noticed that glaring asterisk. Fear not dear reader. There's only a few exceptions. After some discussion with my Design Consultants, we agreed that, Legendaries, Mythicals, Ultra Beasts and Paradox Pokemon should be left to the discretion of the GM if they are to be allowed. We felt that GMs would want these Pokemon in particular for their own Adventures as bosses, villains or some other plot-related reason -- or their existence invited assumptions about a GM's world of PMD, or the general implied setting. So, if you'd like to play one of these Pokemon, get the consent of the rest of the players and the GM!
Futhermore, there's a list of Pokemon that felt like without their key Ability, that Pokemon would simply lose its identity. So, these Pokemon have been dubbed "Unusual Pokemon", and their playstyles can vary wildly based on their unique, built-in Ability. To compensate for them, so the rest of the table doesn't lag behind in power level, there's some suggestions to even the playing field.
That's all for this post! Please follow to make sure to follow to keep up with these "What To Expect" posts if you're interested in the development of this game!

It deeply confuses and saddens me that people so readily dismiss older video games as being lesser. Several of my favorite games of all time are among the oldest in their genres, and frequently get unfairly written off as "dated." It's a shame really, because these titles are diamonds in the rough, and ought to be recognized as the absolute gems they are.
A perfect case study for this topic is Metroid, released for the Famicom Disc System in 1986, and for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987.
Tumblr media
This game is immaculate. It features some of the best design I've ever seen. Its atmosphere, aesthetics, narrative, gameplay, and controls are all on point. Its worst flaw is its buggy programming. And yet, a lot of people seem to hate it. They respect it as the precursor to its widely acclaimed sequels, especially Super Metroid, but not a lot of people appreciate it for its own merits. Why is this? I suspect there are three main reasons.
The first reason is that it doesn't directly tell you much. Most people nowadays play it on an emulator, and don't think to consult the manual, which would have come with a new physical copy and clarified some points of confusion. The manual even has a partial map of Brinstar, the game's first area, and suggests making your own maps as you play.
Tumblr media
Even so, the manual doesn't tell you everything. The game conveys most of what it needs to through gameplay. Its opening moments demonstrate this expertly.
Tumblr media
When you start a new game, Samus appears facing the camera. There is nothing visibly stopping you from going left or right, and nothing to indicate which way the game wants you to go. If you're used to games like Super Mario Bros., you might assume you have to go right.
Tumblr media
If you do, you'll come to an impasse. The only way forward is too narrow for you to fit through. So the only way you can go is left.
Tumblr media
Doubling back, you'll find you can go left from where you started, and come across the morphing ball. When you grab it, you'll seemingly be trapped. The place you jumped down from is too high to jump back up to, and the only other visible path is a narrow passage like you saw earlier. Obviously, you need to use the morphing ball to escape. The game has taught you this without a word.
You'll probably remember the impasse from before. Since you were given the tool to solve a similar situation, you'll naturally think to try it there as well. Thus, the game has taught you the core elements of the search-action genre, or as it eventually came to be known, the metroidvania: as you explore, you will reach obstacles; further exploration will reward you with the means of clearing those obstacles; and remembering where you encountered obstacles will reward you with swift progress.
But Metroid is not done teaching. Once you resume progressing to the right, you'll reach the bottom of a tall vertical shaft.
Tumblr media
When I say this thing is tall, I mean it. The same pattern of platforms is repeated around a dozen times before you reach anything of note, and the whole thing is crawling with simple enemies. Up until this point, a player will probably have fought nearly every enemy they could; after all, defeating them removes them as obstacles, and rewards you with health pickups, which you'll need since Samus starts with only 30 out of 99 units of health. But here, attempting to kill every zoomer (yes, that's what the spiky things are called) will make your climb either extremely slow and tedious or extremely costly in terms of health. Unless a player is unreasonably persistent, they are likely to get bored or frustrated and begin evading the enemies instead. The fact that you can't damage the rippers, the only other type of enemy in this room, further helps to signal that the player needs to pick their battles. And so, yet another critical lesson is wordlessly taught: that you don't generally need to go out of your way to kill enemies, and that avoiding combat can save you time and resources.
Metroid continues teaching the player like this from start to finish. With patience, caution, and observance, you'll learn the game's ins and outs without even realizing it. The problem is that many players don't play with this approach, because of...
The second reason I think people dislike the game: preconceived notions of what old games are like.
NES games have a reputation for being unfairly difficult. The usual explanations for this are that they were still being designed like arcade games, which were meant to get as many quarters out of players as possible, and that they also used difficulty to artificially bloat play time, creating the illusion of better value for people buying them. There is some truth to both of these, but the phenomenon is largely overstated. Nevertheless, this reputation precedes games from that era.
As such, when players today approach a game like Metroid, they aren't expecting an actual well-designed game. They're expecting a brutal experience full of cheap bullshit and cryptic nonsense. When they get to that vertical shaft, they don't consider that they might be doing something wrong, they just assume that it's supposed to be tedious and frustrating. And so they never learn the game's lessons. When they find themselves turned around in the sprawling nonlinear level design, they're predisposed to getting overwhelmed and giving up, at which point they consult...
The third reason I think people dislike the game: walkthroughs.
The way people perceive old games, as described above, has led to the proliferation of walkthroughs. Now, there's nothing wrong with referencing a guide when you're stuck, or when you're trying to track down things you missed, or in other such situations. However, following one to the letter for the entirety of your playthrough ruins games like Metroid. When you have a handy set of step-by-step instructions on how to win, you have no incentive to engage with the game. You have no reason to even try learning level layouts or remembering what's where. Metroid ceases to be a game, and instead becomes a checklist.
It gets worse, though. When you always know precisely where to go next, the time you were expected to spend exploring and getting better at the game gets completely cut out. You don't have time to master the combat. You don't have the opportunity to get a feel for where secrets are most likely to be hidden. As your progress increases, your skill does not. Therefore, following a walkthrough like this leaves you sorely unprepared for the challenges in store for you. And so games like Metroid end up feeling like brutal experiences full of cheap bullshit and cryptic nonsense. A self-fulfilling prophecy.
In conclusion, please give older games a fair chance. Engage with them as earnestly as you would with modern games, and never rule out the possibility that you might be doing something wrong. And above all else, keep your walkthrough usage to a minimum.
There's a whole world of fantastic new experiences waiting for you. Enjoy.
