#Cooking Magic

Cooking Magic was a playline set of Barbie accessories, most depicting different Barbie food items but also including some cooking accessories like plates and kitchen appliances.

The "magic" referred to in the set name is that the food changes colour, to depict both "raw" and "cooked" versions of the food.

The set included some lowkey product placement, with Ruffles and Pepsi making appearances alongside Barbie-branded disposable plates. I am charmed by the individual packaged Ruffles crisps.

The kinds of foods really do range as we go from potato chips to an entire rotisserie chicken in "Picnic Fun".

I think my favourite, personally, is Glamorous Dining because it really shows more than any other that the set operates on child logic. The glamor of the set comes from a whole chicken and a candelabra and platter and plates to set your table, as well as a pink microwave in which to cook your food.

Emiya has consistently had Magecraft for cooking. Like... is cooking magecraft a talent of his? He shouldn't have any talents outside of UBW...

Unlimited Blade Works: the only magecraft allowed to Shirou Emiya.... well that and cooking magecraft.

We finally finished canning the last of our summer harvest and we’re working on turning over the garden for the winter!

I’m still floored at how much our plants yielded, especially our tomatoes. Even with the weather getting colder, we had so many left in our planters so we gathered up the last of them for green tomato pickles and salsa. (I kept a few of the bigger ones to fry up too!)

For not really going into this year’s garden with a much of a plan besides having it look nice for our June wedding, I think we did pretty well! Definitely looking forwards doing some more conscious planting next year though. ☆

This book is pretty much what I expected it to be. There are quite a few plot holes, characters are a little flat, I wasn’t an huge fan of the art style, I thought the pacing was a bit fast, and the resolution wraps things up neater than I typically prefer. Also, it was younger YA than I usually prefer, and while YA is obviously a spectrum it still impacted my enjoyment.

That being said, I love stories that do interesting things with food magic, the casual diversity throughout this book was incredible, the main romance was adorable, and I did think the ideas it deals with (especially burnout and the pressure of parental expectations) are important to talk about in works for younger audiences.

Overall, while this wasn’t for me, it may be a great book for other people, especially younger teens. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a cute and light read. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re looking for a particularly fleshed-out world, airtight plot, or complex antagonists.
