This time of year as the days get shorter always reminds me of a location shoot in Chicago. We scouted several locations and this one happened on a porch in historic Oak Park. // It was dark because this porch was completely covered in a Prairie style home built at the end of the 1800s. Working on these small 8 x 8s. They feel more like objects, using all sides. As I completed the first go round on them I’m reminded to pause and consider quiescence. In biology quiescence is a dormant state of a living cell. But in us and in our work quiescence can create space, a pause. Instead of plowing through I pause and allow these small works to dictate what happens next! Mortality Creating Space for Mindfulness

Sometimes I feel like I lose the ability to really listen. I get caught up in my own bullshit that I can’t listen to people anymore. Fake listening.

We don’t really let it in about our mortality. Because if we really did understand that this body will be a corpse. The time of death is uncertain, but death is certain. If we really got that, we would have fewer of the kind of moments where we regret wasting our time or somebody else’s. And we would be more acutely sensitive to the fleeting nature of being alive. Just as horrible and brutal as it can be, it’s gorgeous and exquisite too.

So, I think to listen to each other requires a little bit of mindfulness. We spend a lot of time in these sort of fugue states.

This was a client's bedroom staged to sell. I found a headboard because the sleigh bed frame was so dated looking. No one ever slept in this bed after it was made up. It was COVID and everyone was gone but me. // I know my Dad, my client, would have liked it if he'd been able to climb the stairs one more time to see it before the house sold. He likes blue, and I designed it for him even though he'd just see the photos. // Now, I'm sorting through all his things, and some of these pieces are mixed in. The lamp I've found and the shade, too. The bedding must still be in bags.
