Today, August 15th, is the anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw during the Polish-Bolshevik War in which Poland defeated Russia.

The war featured overconfident and squabbling Russian invaders, determined Polish defenders, jamming of a military communications system, a counteroffensive against the invaders, and Westerners surprised at Poland's success. Sound a bit familiar? 🤔

Because people outside Eastern Europe usually know little about Eastern European history, it's worth reminding everybody that Russia has been stopped by smaller neighbors in the past.

The Battle of Warsaw became known as the Miracle on the Vistula (Cud nad Wisłą).

Russia has been trying to undermine and neutralize Poland one way or another for about 250 years. Just today I saw this news story at Meduza.

At the best of times, Poland is suspicious of Russia – and with good reason. Joining NATO on 19 March 1999 was a great relief for Poland.

The Polish attitude towards Russia could be summed up by this joke which may have been inspired by the September, 1939 invasions of Poland from the west by Nazi Germany and from the east by Soviet Russia.

A Polish soldier is being charged by a Russian and a German. Who does he shoot first, and why? The German, because business before pleasure.

I will answer Feliks first because I am shamefully not that knowledgeable in military history of Prussia or Lithuania and probably Poland for the matter. I generally have a hard time understanding stuff when reading things like battles.

But in the process I've learned now that there were two battles fought in my family's town so that's pretty cool. One against the prussians and one against the Russians

But I don't think those ones are memorable for Feliks.

Bitwa pod Płowcami 1331

The battle was fierce and there seemed to be no end in sight as there appeared to be a deadlock in combat between the polish and the Teutonic knights. Then one of the banners of the Teutonic knights fell as a horse was slain by a spear. The Teutonic knights thought it was their leader who died in that moment and began to retreat. This allowed the Poles to turn the tide and win the battle by attacking the retreating side. They won because of a horse. That would stand out to Feliks hands down.

Probably some other battles like Cud nad Wisłą also are on the list. Nonetheless anyone who has more knowledge of polish battles or Lithuanian and Prussian ones, feel free to give me your thoughts

Kolejny dobry dzień. Została podpisana umowa przedwstępna na sprzedaż mieszkania :) zatem byle szybko kupującej udzielili kredyt. Jest młodą panią doktor zatem zdolność ma i nie powinno być z tym problemu. Ja dziś czułam się całkiem dobrze choć miałam stan podgorączkowy. Wyszedł mi ten wczorajszy spacer w zimnicy :/ dziś chce wcześniej położyć się spać.

Ogólnie dziś trochę poćwiczyłam, pograłam na konsoli i poszłam na spacer. No i oczywiście posprzątałam mieszkanie. Dziś na szczęście nie było bajzlu po nocy.

Uszate dziady mają się dobrze. Dogadują się dobrze. Choć Jerry to erotoman i ciągle zaczepia Rudzika. Ta przychodzi do mnie za przytulaski i buziaczki. Pokazuje tym Jerremu, że nie jestem tylko od dawania jedzenia. Król Srebrny dziś nawet dał nie poprzytulać i wygłaskać. Oczywiście wcześniej wcale nie miał na to ochoty oznajmiając mi niechęć zębami. Delikatnie gryzie mnie w rękę i odsuwa ją w oburzeniu. Jednak nie ze mną takie numery. W końcu dał się przekonać na głaski :) pewnie dlatego go oddano. Ktoś nie miał cierpliwości i po kilku gryzach się pewnie zniechęcił…

No cóż. Króliki to humorzaste bestie a nie przytulanki. No może poza Rudą bo ona jest bardzo przytulaśna i całuśna.

Ogólnie u mnie dobrze. Dziś przyszły mi Shake proteinowe z tej samej serii co omawiany ostatnio „Ala monte”. Dziś wypróbowałam smak pistacja-marcepan. Całkiem dobry, słodki, więc mi pasuje. Jutro będę testować kawowy :)

Kurier, który mi przyniósł Shake był bardzo miły :) aż sobie chwilkę ucięliśmy rozmowę. Później zaś sąsiad z naprzeciwka, który prowadzi warsztat mnie zagadał jak się czuje. Wszyscy wiedzą, że przyjeżdża do mnie karetka raz na jakiś czas 😅 więc tak stałam w szlafroku i w klapkach dobre pół godziny… jak jutro się nie pochoruje to będzie cud nad Wisłą xD

ktory to już moj powrót? trzeci? może czwarty? XDDD

wcześniej to prowadziłam po angielsku ale kogo to obchodzi, bede pisac po polsku, i tak bede miec zasiegu ile kot napłakał ale właściwie to tak lepiej

moja historia wyglada tak że w sierpniu 2022 zaczęłam przyjaźń z aną, poszło 12kg. zaczeło sie psuć koło nowego roku, w okresie styczeń-maj zaczęłam sie objadać i tracić kontrole, wróciło mi 5 kilo :( a w maju stał sie cud nad wisłą i teraz sa dni kiedy udaje mi sie nie jeść za dużo, czasem jem jak zdrowy czlowiek a czasem robie b/p. ogolnie przyjamniej nie tyje ale też nie chudne.

boje sie wagi ale ostatnio ważyłam koło 65 kg, fuj przy moim wzroscie.

Be on the right side of history — not the far right fringe of history.

Another Russian tank, poorly constructed, recently lost its turret in a particularly unusual way.

The defect with these tanks has been known for decades. Yet Russia did little to correct it.

It’s a metaphor for the state of the Putin régime. It ignores reality and is weaker because of its failure to come to grips with it.

Putin doesn’t care about how many Russian Federation citizens are killed by faulty equipment while being led by incompetent officers during a genocidal invasion of a peaceful neighboring country.

Being pro-Ukraine is being against neo-fascism and imperialism. History will not be kind to those who conduct the invasion nor to those who make pitiful excuses for it.

BTW, today is the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw – the decisive battle of the 1919-1921 Polish-Bolshevik War.

Poland defeated Russia in a consequential war which often gets overlooked – especially in Russia. Size does not always matter; that’s something Ukraine is proving today.

The Battle of Warsaw (Polish: Bitwa Warszawska), also known as the Miracle on the Vistula (Polish: Cud nad Wisłą), was a series of battles that resulted in a decisive Polish victory in 1920 during the Polish–Soviet War. Poland, on the verge of total defeat, repulsed and defeated the Red Army. 

After the Polish Kiev Offensive, Soviet forces launched a successful counterattack in summer 1920, forcing the Polish army to retreat westward in disarray. The Polish forces seemed on the verge of disintegration and observers predicted a decisive Soviet victory. 

The Battle of Warsaw was fought from August 12–25, 1920 as Red Army forces commanded by Mikhail Tukhachevsky approached the Polish capital of Warsaw and the nearby Modlin Fortress. On August 16, Polish forces commanded by Józef Piłsudski counterattacked from the south, disrupting the enemy's offensive, forcing the Russian forces into a disorganized withdrawal eastward and behind the Neman River. Estimated Russian losses were 10,000 killed, 500 missing, 30,000 wounded, and 66,000 taken prisoner, compared with Polish losses of some 4,500 killed, 10,000 missing, and 22,000 wounded. 

The defeat crippled the Red Army; Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik leader, called it "an enormous defeat" for his forces. In the following months, several more Polish follow-up victories secured Poland's independence and led to a peace treaty with Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine later that year, securing the Polish state's eastern frontiers until 1939.
