What are each of the Batfam’s favorite Godzilla movies, both Toho and Monsterverse?

Oooh, thank for the excellent ask! I will take any chance I can get to use my abundant, yet useless, knowledge of Godzilla. My apologies upfront. I can a little... pedantic about these things.

Bruce - He loves the Millennium era movies, particularly Godzilla vs Mech-Godzilla (1999). 

There’s  one specific line you can only get in the dubbed version, “Too many meetings can change a man’s destiny”. It’s a motto inscribed in Bruce’s heart. He loves to mumble it to Alfred as he heads out the Wayne Enterprises for a Board Meeting.

Dick & Tim - These two are on the same page and adore the campiness, bad dubbing and dreadful special effects of the Showa Era. 1969′s All Monsters Attack is their favorite for sheer over-the-top lunacy. 

There’s Daddy Godzilla, kid Minizilla, some strange Japanese child in shorts with an overactive imagination and (wait for it) bank robbers. Tim has been known to get laughing so hard he snorts Zesti through his nose when Dick starts inserting his own dialogue or singing love songs to various Kaiju. 

Jason - He will always default to 1998′s Godzilla done by Roland Emmerich.

It’s partly because he knows everyone else hates the movie. Jason gets a big kick out seeing New York City thoroughly trashed - especially Madison Square Garden. Seeing the home of the hated Knicks go up in flames never fails to make him smile. 

Cassandra - At first she was confused about cheering for a large bizarre lizard who caused more property damage than Bane on a bender but eventually warmed up to the big green guy. She is currently enamored of the Reiwa era film, Shin Godzilla (2106). 

She likes the fourth evolution where he can shoot lasers from his mouth, spines and tail all at once. It’s very efficient. And pretty.

Damian - Dami considered himself a Godzilla purist, so nothing but the original Godzilla (1954) will do for him. 

He appreciates the subtle cinematography and the idea of Godzilla representing the atomic bomb.  Although he’d never admit it, Damian does get a kick out of seeing Godzilla rise from Tokyo Bay to level the city. 

Stephanie hates everything about the movies. Tim once dragged her to a retro film festive that showed all the Toho movies. In order. For two full days. Just the sound of Godzilla’s roar is enough to make her run for hills.

Barbara likes the modern Legendary movies best, particularly Godzilla King of The Monsters (2019). 

Why? Because as a college student she spent one miserable summer in Boston going to seminar at Boston University. She lived in a cramped, un-airconditioned dorm room that smelled like feet. Watching Godzilla, King Ghidora, Mothra and Rodan level a good swath of the city feel a little bit like karma for her. She’s been known to cackle in an unhinged manner when Fenway Park gets stomped. Dick finds it vaguely unsettling. 

Duke - He’s not really up to date on all of the various versions of Gojira, but he’s let himself be talked into going to the midnight premiere of Godzilla Minus One when it comes out in December.

Dick and Tim are planning to do cosplay, so Duke isn’t quite sure what he’s gotten himself into.

First Post

So this is it. My first real post on Tumblr. Yay me! I guess this post is going to be about myself, and the Masterlist of what I've written, in timeline order.

I'm JohnMcHacker, and I'm a longtime Harry Pothead. (That sounds like an opener to Potters Anonymous, doesn't it?) I'd heard in passing of HP earlier, but only started reading when Goblet of Fire hit the shelves. I quickly read through all the previous books, waited eagerly for Order of the Phoenix (my personal favourite of the lot), and the rest is history.

I read a lot of fanfiction and wrote some (not very good) stuff, until about 2012 when life got too busy and I stopped writing. But HP was always in the back of my mind and I always thought about the universe, reread the books, and thought about what happened next. I picked up HP again in 2022 when I heard that fanfiction had had a mild resurgence during the pandemic, browsed through a couple, and realised that fanfiction had matured significantly in quality and depth since I left the scene. (And plumbed certain new lows, in my opinion, but live and let live I guess.)

So now I'm writing again, and I'm writing stories that I've had 10 years to think about. There's a specific grand arc of what happened after Deathly Hallows that I have in mind. As of this post (January 2023) I haven't actually started on the big events, but I'm warming up and getting there.

My stories revolve around the themes of good vs evil, friendship, family, and love. I write about the never-ending battle for justice, righteousness and love against lawlessness, wickedness and hatred, and I write about the little moments in between (ba dum tss!) of kindness, affection, romance, of friendship and family.

My favourite pairings are Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, and Draco/Astoria. I intend to write most about these couples, but I hope to also explore others along the way, as well as family in general. Because Family is everything, believe me.

So please, stick around for the ride, I hope and believe you'll be suitably entertained. And as always, per the byword of all fanfiction synopses in the golden days of yore: read and review please!

Date Me, Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye

Important to note Date Me, Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye has after its publication been banned in some US libraries. Because of this I decided I should share this review I’ve been sitting on for way too long because of different controversy the title has been involved in.

From an affluent family but with a messy home life and teased about his disdain for high school relationships, captain of the boys’ soccer team Bryson Keller is dared to date anyone from among the senior class (including underclassmen apparently would be gross) who asks him out on Monday. BUT… only for the school week. After over two months of Bryson with a parade of girls, the closeted and less than popular Kai Sheridan impulsively asks Date Me, Bryson Keller!

Kevin van Whye, a gay mixed race South African writer, in an author’s note to the book besides speaking on his own lived experiences lists several works and their creators he feels indebted to as inspiration for his debut OwnVoices young adult novel Date Me, Bryson Keller. These are Skam a 2015-2017 Norwegian teen drama TV webseries (especially season 3), two other English language young adult novels in 2014 To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, in 2015 Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, also the latter 2018 film adaptation, going way back a 1999 American teen movie rom com She’s All That, and finally a Japanese boys love comic series Seven Days written by Venio Tachibana and illustrated by Rihito Takarai. But it was concerning this last well-liked work where a nerve was touched across readers of Japanese comics and YA books.

Firstly, with accusations against Kevin van Whye of plagiarism. Seven Days features a popular first year high school student who dates the first person to ask him out on a Monday but, only for the week. Until, instead of a girl, a handsome upperclassman on a whim asks him out. For more details on Seven Days, I have previously reviewed the 2010-11 English edition. While dating with a time limit is common in the romance genre, I hadn’t encountered another title quite like it before. In fact, it was the mention of Seven Days which led me to put Date Me, Bryson Keller on my list of 2020 anticipated releases.

Secondly, the conflict involved the concept of representation and critique of the BL genre. During February 2019 the author posted a response on Goodreads. In part: “There were themes that I wanted to explore in a western setting and as an own voices writer. These were born from my own critique of the work with respect to actual and realistic LGBT culture, people and issues. I wanted to write a story for the LGBT reader, as told by my own lived experience.” Further in an interview on the YA Sh3lf blog in November 2019: “my own critique and feelings toward the manga Seven Days (and the Boy Love genre in general) definitely served as a jumping off point as far as inspiration.”

Critiques and the question of representation in Japanese BL is a decades long complex discourse. At times swinging from the more apolitical to political. Furthermore, especially fraught when involving identity politics. Which may be somewhat familiar as many other examples of queer literature from elsewhere around the globe undergo analysis, critiques, and disputes. Too movements like OwnVoices, intended to promote marginalized writers, became less helpful and after years faced demise. Unfortunately, I cannot begin to outline the parallels, differences, and nuances of these debates in this review. (Though if one is interested, I can suggest some scholarly reading.) However, it is this background which the author, who also pointed to a rudimentary TV tropes page on the BL genre, stepped right in to.

Speaking of tropes, I have a soft spot for dating tropes. Also, to include works like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. After old love letters are sent, Laura Jean Covey ends up faking dating an old crush Peter Kavinsky, which then turns into the real thing. (Also, Peter’s character most influenced Kevin van Whye with Bryson.) The concept of a dating dare is also the premise of She’s All That (itself a take on My Fair Lady, in turn adapting the stage play Pygmalion). Where soccer star and class president Zack Siler on a bet tries to make Laney Boggs, an artistic clumsy girl, Prom Queen to his King.

But heaping parts tropey teen dating novel Date Me, Bryson Keller is also a coming out story, with hardships. Grappling with the meaning of gay identity and the effects. In common with the hugely popular Simon (among several other similarities)and Skam Season 3.

Seriously, if one is well read in a genre, one knows the scènes à faire. Further if you are familiar with these works you can pick up the beats and bits from here and there, and there and here with Kevin van Whye’s book. He calls the stories “woven into the tapestry of this novel “. But, unlike some cases, these threads do make the work stand out less and feel more derivative. Even as the author specifically also talks about some of the aspects that are personal. Still, it is true as he writes in the author’s note: “I’ve always believed that more than one story of a certain type can exist. We need more representation all around. We shouldn’t settle for just one thing, because we are not just one thing. Our race, culture, geography, sexuality, and experiences make us different. These things shape our stories, our lives.”

The Namibian men’s rugby union team first played competitively in 1955, against a touring British and Irish Lions side. Known then as South West Africa – “Namibia” was not used to refer to the region until the 1960s, and the country only gained formal independence in 1990 – the team lost by 0 points to 9.

Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford will take place on July 29th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Showtime PPV for the undisputed welterweight championship.

For a long time, Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford was a fight that fans felt they had lost. It won’t happen, or if it does, it’ll be too late. It was a much-clamored fight since 2018, when Crawford made a move up to 147 lbs, to no end. With every fight both men had that was not named Spence or Crawford in the opposite corner, it just would not suffice. These two are destined to determine one another’s legacy. They are natural generational rivals. Now it’s actually happening.

Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia was huge because of the fight’s transcendence beyond the boxing fanbase. Heavyweight showdowns between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship and Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder, a fight between two of the leading heavyweight contenders and former big-punching champions, are colossal.

However, purely from a quality vs. quality standpoint, pound-for-pound vs. pound-for-pound, it does not get better than Spence vs. Crawford for all four belts in an undisputed welterweight showdown.

They’re a combined 67-0 with 52 KOs. They have both been pound-for-pound top five mainstays for the past few years. They may not be young studs anymore, with Crawford aged 35 and Spence 33, but neither man has shown any signs of decline yet, and both still appear in their prime. These two are simply the two best fighters of their generation in the same weight class, which happens to be the historically revered welterweight division; both still at their peak, with all the physical gifts, talents, and intangibles in the world, contesting for undisputed supremacy. It does not get any better.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns in 1981. Felix Trinidad vs Oscar De La Hoya in 1999. Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao in 2015. Now, this generation is getting its welterweight super-fight.

This is the biggest welterweight match-up since Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, bar none. The only difference is, unlike Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, this fight is arguably not past its expiration date. Mayweather was 38 when they fought, and Pacquiao was 36. Both men were top pound-for-pound fighters at the time, but both were also clearly past their best. Mayweather only fought twice more, if you want to count that glorified Conor McGregor exhibition bout, a clear indicator that his days were nearing an end. Pacquiao was no longer the dynamic merchant he was a few years earlier. The ideal time for that match-up would have been 2010 or 2011.

Spence and Crawford are not much younger than Mayweather, and Pacquiao were when they fought, but these two appear fresher. Crawford has stopped his last 10 opponents, with his two most recent wins being a statement knock-out of Shawn Porter in November 2021 and a devastating KO of David Avanesyan in December 2022. Crawford turns 36 in September. Father Time could creep up on him at any moment, but that has yet to happen. Spence survived a terrible car crash in late 2019, lucky to prevail alive, and has since defeated Danny Garcia via unanimous decision in December 2020 and stopped Yordenis Ugas in April 2022 to unify three 147 lbs titles.

Spence and Crawford have simultaneously been champions at welterweight for five years. Spence has been a welterweight champion since stopping Kell Brook in May 2017, and Crawford became a champion at 147 lbs when he stopped Jeff Horn in June 2018. They have a combined 12 title defenses, with six defenses apiece. Crawford is the WBO king, and Spence is the unified WBC, WBA, and IBF champion.

Spence is not a pressure fighter in the same mold as Julio Cesar Chavez Sr or an aggressive brawler like Ray Mancini, but he does employ an educated, subtle, and relentless attack behind his strong southpaw jab. That consistent jab frequently sets up left-hand blows to head and body, with Spence arguably the most effective and accurate body puncher in boxing today. Spence has great footwork and is a master at controlling distance, but also really knows how to work his way on the inside. A combination of aggression, volume, body punching, and power from a man who is so physically strong at the weight but has also mastered the fundamentals of the Sweet Science makes Spence an extremely difficult opponent to prepare for.

Crawford is a complete fighter. He can box. He can punch. He can fight equally as effectively on the front foot and back foot and from either stance. He has power in both hands. Crawford has the ability to make adjustments mid-fight, unlike any other active fighter, with great instincts, and is a great counter-puncher. He is also arguably the best finisher in the sport today. Once an opponent is hurt, Crawford is ice-cold in the manner he does not let his opponents off the hook.

With the vast skill set at both fighters’ disposal, both men also have the heart, will, and toughness to grit it out and win a war of attrition when needed.

Spence and Crawford have it all. That’s what makes this fight so special.

The past greats had talent, but they became all-time greats because of a worthy rival that made them display what they were made of. Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier had one another. The Four Kings had one another. Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta’s rivalry cemented each other’s legacy and defined an era. Every true great needs a dance partner.

After everything Spence and Crawford have achieved, this is their chance to finally cement their greatness.
