I’m putting an SSD into the first brand new computer I ever had, a 2009 imac. Actually very accessible! The front panel is held on with magnets rather than glue. It doesn’t know what hit it; it boots up so fast the progress bar doesn’t even fill. It runs way cooler because the SSD is so much more energy efficient (and leaves more open space in the case). The experience of using Finder on this 15-year old machine is so snappy and responsive compared to my current workhorse 2020 imac, it’s kinda wild how much more sluggish macOS has gotten in the last 10 years.
MacOS Sierra is so old that the internet certificates it ships with have expired, so I had to jump thru some hoops to get it working, manually adding Mozilla certificates for example. Homebrew refused to download its own ca-certificates cask, so I ended up having to download it on a different machine and transfer the package so Homebrew thought it had already downloaded it and skipped to installing. Very fiddly, but a labour of love. It takes fucking ages to compile anything though.

Professional Laptop Repair vs. DIY: Pros and Cons Explained
When your laptop or MacBook is facing technical difficulties, the decision of whether to go for a DIY repair or seek professional assistance can be overwhelming. While many tech-savvy individuals may feel confident in trying to fix their devices themselves, others might wonder if they should trust experts. In this blog, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of DIY versus professional laptop repair and MacBook repair, offering insights to help you make an informed decision.
At Digimob Phone Repair, we specialize in providing professional and reliable laptop and MacBook repair services. But before you decide to take that next step, let’s look at what you should consider when faced with a malfunctioning laptop or MacBook.
Understanding Laptop and MacBook Repair
When it comes to laptop repair and MacBook repair, the repair process can vary depending on the type and complexity of the issue. Laptops and MacBooks are sophisticated machines, and their internal components can be delicate. From simple software glitches to hardware failures, there are many types of issues that can arise.
Some common problems include:
Battery replacement for laptops that aren’t holding a charge.
Screen repairs for cracked or malfunctioning displays.
Hard drive failures, where the data becomes inaccessible or the system crashes.
Overheating issues that lead to system slowdowns or shutdowns.
Software errors that require system reinstallations or virus removals.
Let’s explore the benefits and drawbacks of attempting to fix these problems yourself or getting professional help from a service like Digimob Phone Repair.
DIY Laptop Repair: What You Need to Know
Many people are tempted to repair their laptops or MacBooks themselves to save money. With the rise of tutorial videos and online guides, the idea of performing DIY repairs has become more accessible. However, before you dive in, there are several factors to keep in mind.
Advantages of DIY Laptop Repair
Cost-Effective The most obvious advantage of DIY repair is saving money. Professional repair services can be expensive, especially for MacBooks. By tackling the issue yourself, you avoid the labor costs associated with professional repair shops.
Learning Experience If you enjoy tinkering with gadgets, DIY repairs offer a valuable learning opportunity. You can gain hands-on experience and learn more about the inner workings of your laptop or MacBook.
Instant Gratification One of the advantages of DIY repairs is that you can act immediately. You don’t have to wait for an appointment or shipping time. If you have the necessary tools and parts on hand, you can get started right away.

Why Windows Computers Are Easier to Repair Than Apple Products
When it comes to repairing computers, Windows-based PCs stand out as significantly more repair-friendly compared to their Apple counterparts. Whether you’re a technician or a consumer looking to fix a device, the differences are striking—and they often come down to design philosophy. Apple’s “Designed to be Replaced” Philosophy Apple is notorious for designing products that are harder, if not…

How to survive in the apocalypse, non exhaustive list-
Improve the lives of ourselves+
Others+
Combat a fascist police state
Many scattered sources, just my thoughts;
Share/spread info (posts, articles, zines, paste-ups, posters, stickers, etc). Run across fascist posters/sticker? Safely take it down or cover it up with something.
Utilize community gardens, food banks, forage/find out what local edible plants are around/educate yourself on foraging, grow your own food if you can, cook meals/share food, etc.
Turn to diy hrt if needed/wanted; share resources.
Pick from trash/dumpster/the curb, thrift, be "thrifty."
Attend protests (no phone + n95 mask).
Get involved in local level politics.
Get in the way of ICE agents; report their presence. Be willing to get arrested.
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Try to lower your waste if possible. Compost. Upcylce. Reuse plastic, glass. Make your own clothes. Etc.
Rest/use your spoons wisely.
Read, educate yourself and others. Buy used books. Shared PDFs. Make and share zines. Do you have a local "give a book, get a book" sitch?
Pick up litter.
Learn how to make stencils, how to graffiti.
Do home repairs yourself if possible. Learn how to diy as much as you can (opting out of capitalism as much as possible); but also know when to turn to your community. We are social creatures, too. All we have is each other.
Pirate as much as possible. Support physical media. Support local businesses. Cancel subscriptions.
Look into guerilla gardening; seed bombing.
Be kind- give directions, check on ppl, smile at ppl, help ppl, hold the door, ask if they're ok.
Intervene when needed- learn healthy bystander intervention
Fallingfruit.com

Volunteer- library, animal shelter, humane society, soup kitchen, etc.
Help our neighbors if they need + when we can.
Walk + use public transport as much as you can.
Go to the library- books, movies, CDs, computers, printers, WAY MORE!
Support local artists/music shows.
Be as unmarketable as possible- buy less online + decoy emails + delete permissions from apps + privacy settings, etc.
Use cash, good for small businesses.
Give what we can- time? Money? Skills? Space? Stuff? What will make the most impact?
Talk about your wage.
Think about where your money goes/how it flows/whose hands it goes into.
Create art. Do it at work if you can get away with it.
Put yr body outside.
Learn good conflict resolution + interpersonal skills where you can!!
When you feel scared about resources, list which ones you have and which ones you need and move accordingly.
Listen to others.
Teach a skill for free.
Boycott.
Civil disobedience! (;
Make systems obsolete by opting out as much as you can.
Nap
Cry
Scream
Feel + express your emotions
Make space for joy, too
Hug
Breathe
If you don't have hope, have spite.
This is a list that I'm keeping and adding to, in an effort to remind myself I am not powerless, I have many actions I can take. We must live.

Id probably end up becoming a Witch (which is a strain/ethnicity/occupation in this case. They're like the cyborg Monks of the Process, but they're itinerant DIY sorcerers who make money by travelling from town to town doing computer hardware repairs and systems administration.)

(Wormton AU) Somehow I went from putting a worm on a string inside my Spamton plushie's head to a 150k+ word fanfiction about the last living member of an entire extinct species of Spamton-themed giant predatory parasitoid computer-worm centipedes who is wearing a DIY skin suit (he has social anxiety)

Extra brain rot ⬇️

Molting process (shedding the exoskeleton, including hair)

Being fed a tracking chip hidden in a meat cube (in reference to Cyber City's efforts exterminating the BIGSHOT malworm (Wormton's species) during the 1997 invasion)

Top: muscles inside of the malworm's mouth allow its teeth to fold and receed inwards, allowing it to close its mouth properly.
A malworm's "teeth" are not actual teeth; they are parts of the mandible and are regularly shed alongside the rest of the exoskeleton.
Bottom: The aortic arches form the malworm's "hearts." They assist in moving blood around the body like a normal heart would. Malworms do not have a auditory heart beat.
The malworm lung structure is divided into many small connected chambers that run along the body. Should one of the pseudo-lungs be damaged, the tube connecting it to the rest of the respiratory system will close up until the damage is repaired, allowing the malworm to survive a punctured "lung."
The gizzard is a part of the digestive system. It allows the malworm to digest difficult materials, including the metal, plastic, and other inorganic aspects of their darkner prey.
The prominent, squishy circular markings at the corners of the malworm's mouth are scent glands used to mark territory. Malworms that live together will affectionately rub their scents on each other.
The proboscis acts as a long hollow spear that malworms use to attack prey, inject venom, and inject eggs. While malworm hatchlings use their proboscis to slurp up liquified tissues (since they aren't born with jaws), adults prefer solid foods. The proboscis resembles a tongue when relaxed, but a malworm can extend it up to half its body length depending on the species.
The hair of a malworm is incredibly similar to a spider. While not nearly as sensitive as a spider's hair, their hairs can feel the environment and detect vibrations and movement if close enough. It is also hydrophobic and keeps the cold-blooded malworm warm.
Malworms have scopula pads (dense specialized hairs) on the bottom of their feet that allow them to stick to walls.

The malworm's body parts, including the head, can reattach as long as the central nerve remains attached. If a body part is completely severed, the malworm will be able to regenerate it. A malworm can even completely regrow a severed head as long as it is tube-fed through the remainder of its throat. They are incredibly resilient, but far from invincible.
The malworm's nervous system acts as several "sub-brains" that allow the malworm to continue preforming basic functions (breathing, eating) even without a head.
The aforementioned fanfiction is not public yet. I plan to have a rough version of every chapter finished before I start sharing chapters on ao3, and I currently only have 76k words written.

I love my wife
But I'm a terrible friend and partner
I'm bad at communicating and expressing myself
I try but I know I sound like some whiney "third world problem" snowflake because all of my explanations are only excuses as to why I think, behave or act a certain way
My mother sheltered me and hardly let me ever express myself or explore new things because she was constantly afraid of letting me do new things that seemed "dangerous"
So I developed a fear of the unknown
My step father tried to be a role model and teach me things (building, DIY, computers, how to use tools, how to do some basic home repairs, etc)
But he is a very condescending asshole who actually has admitted to looking down on people who he considers "dumb"
And therefore nothing I ever do is ever good enough in his eyes and in the eyes of others: other family, friends, myself and especially in my wife's eyes. I'll forever remain a disappointment to everyone. I'm not good enough.
I'm not creative.
I second guess myself.
Bad relationships and not being accepted for who I am and rather who others wanted me to be changed and warped my sense of self
Over time, I let my own religious and spiritual beliefs crumble because: What's the point in anything?
I haven't loved myself not even once because it was instilled in my brain that I'm not good enough at anything and I will always fail...
And then I meet my wife.
She's been fighting this ugliness inside of me ever since we've known each other. For eight. Fucking years.
And you'd think that with our talks and therapy and heart to hearts and simply just being in her kind and accepting and loving aura: I'd be okay
But I'm not
I close myself off
I'm cold sometimes
I'm unsure. I hesitate. I make bad choices because I second guess myself a lot. My personality changes a lot--
TW for mention of s.h.
I even admitted to her once that I used a pumpkin carving knife to make sure I could still feel. Nothing deep. Just....scars that will never go away
They've been there for 12years now. A constant reminder that I was stupid enough to do such a thing
Or told her that: I look at the sky and see the clouds and wonder -- are they real? Is this a simulation?
Sometimes I act like two different people
And right now, I'm the cold and indifferent side of me because I'm so stressed out about our current situation
It's getting hot
The car doesn't have AC
We have a power station and a fan in this muggy tropical like heat
And I'm so worried my wife is gonna have a heat stroke
I'm so terrified my cats are gonna die of heat exhaustion
She's taking good care of them
And all I can think about is: I'm not good enough to provide enough for them
How fucking pathetic and selfish is that thought?

Human augmentation:
refers to the use of technology to enhance physical, cognitive, or sensory abilities beyond natural human limits. Augmentation can be temporary or permanent and can range from simple tools to advanced cybernetic implants. Here are some key ways a person can be augmented:
### **1. Physical Augmentation**
- **Prosthetics & Exoskeletons**: Advanced prosthetic limbs (bionic arms/legs) and powered exoskeletons can restore or enhance mobility and strength.
- **Muscle & Bone Enhancements**: Synthetic tendons, reinforced bones, or muscle stimulators can improve physical performance.
- **Wearable Tech**: Smart clothing, haptic feedback suits, and strength-assist devices can enhance endurance and dexterity.
### **2. Sensory Augmentation**
- **Enhanced Vision**: Bionic eyes (retinal implants), night-vision contact lenses, or AR/VR headsets can extend visual capabilities.
- **Enhanced Hearing**: Cochlear implants or ultrasonic hearing devices can improve or restore hearing.
- **Tactile & Haptic Feedback**: Sensors that provide enhanced touch or vibration feedback for better interaction with machines or virtual environments.
- **Olfactory & Taste Augmentation**: Experimental tech could enhance or modify smell/taste perception.
### **3. Cognitive Augmentation**
- **Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs)**: Neural implants (e.g., Neuralink, neuroprosthetics) can improve memory, learning speed, or direct brain-to-machine communication.
- **Nootropics & Smart Drugs**: Chemical enhancements that boost focus, memory, or mental processing.
- **AI Assistants**: Wearable or implantable AI that aids decision-making or information retrieval.
### **4. Genetic & Biological Augmentation**
- **Gene Editing (CRISPR)**: Modifying DNA to enhance physical traits, disease resistance, or longevity.
- **Synthetic Biology**: Engineered tissues, organs, or blood substitutes for improved performance.
- **Biohacking**: DIY biology experiments, such as implanting magnets in fingers for sensing electromagnetic fields.
### **5. Cybernetic & Digital Augmentation**
- **Embedded Chips (RFID, NFC)**: Subdermal implants for digital identity, keyless access, or data storage.
- **Digital Twins & Cloud Integration**: Real-time health monitoring via embedded sensors linked to cloud AI.
- **Neural Lace**: A mesh-like brain implant for seamless human-AI interaction (still experimental).
### **6. Performance-Enhancing Substances**
- **Stem Cell Therapies**: For faster healing and regeneration.
- **Synthetic Hormones**: To boost strength, endurance, or recovery.
- **Nanotechnology**: Microscopic machines for repairing cells or enhancing biological functions.
### **Ethical & Social Considerations**
- **Privacy & Security**: Risks of hacking or surveillance with embedded tech.
- **Inequality**: Augmentation could widen gaps between enhanced and non-enhanced individuals.
- **Identity & Humanity**: Philosophical debates on what it means to be "human" after augmentation.
### **Current & Future Trends**
- **Military & Defense**: DARPA and other agencies are working on super-soldier programs.
- **Medical Rehabilitation**: Restoring lost functions for disabled individuals.
- **Transhumanism**: A movement advocating for human enhancement to transcend biological limits.
Would you like details on a specific type of augmentation?

RebelCaptain Week 2024
RebelCaptain Week 2024
Day Four: Stars
"Why Stardust?" he asked. The Airbnb was made of glass so they were able to lie in bed, staring through the ceiling at the sky. The woods had offered them a really nice private little getaway before all of the chaos of the next few days.
"What?" Jyn asked, looking at Cassian.
He was turning her hand over and over in his, looking at the sky.
"Why does your father call you Stardust?"
She smiled at him, looking back at the sky.
"It's the scientist in him, all matter in the universe is made up of the same elements- we are made up of the same material that makes up stars- so he's always called me Stardust."
"Galen Erso- surprise romantic."
She smiled and looked at him.
"Your dad is too- I realized," she said and he looked at her.
"My dad? A romantic?"
She pulled her phone from the sidetable and showed him. "Look, he has been sending me articles about how to repair my own car and DIY house projects. He said he doesn't want me to pay for anything that I can fix myself," she said and he sighed, looking at the phone. That sounded like his dad.
"How is that romantic?" Cassian asked, looking at all of the texts. His dad was always sending him random articles about computer or car parts to fix himself.
"I think it's sweet that he is looking out for me in his weird dad way. My dad too- you know that he made me memorize the periodic table and learn everything there was to know about bombs when he found out that I was going into the military?"
Jyn smiled, looking at the stars and shaking her head.
"Oh, dad's are so strange..." she whispered and he leaned in, kissing her forehead and then pressing his cheek against it, wrapping his arms around her.
"Papa's getting really emotional now that we're getting married next week," she said, and he nodded.
"My dad is thrilled but Kay keeps asking me if I want to back out."
She sighed dramatically. The fiancee and the best friend rarely got along but their particularly antagonistic relationship was on another level. She had been forced to even invite Kay to the wedding because he was the best man. She hugged Cassian, closing her eyes and sighing.
"Stardust... it's a good name... I like it..." Cassian said, drifting off to sleep and she held onto him, looking at the stars overhead.

Why do some car manufacturers make it extremely difficult to change a headlight bulb, sometimes requiring a trip to the dealership?
Why Some Car Manufacturers Make Headlight Bulb Replacement Difficult Replacing headlight bulbs in modern vehicles can feel like navigating an engineering maze, often requiring specialized tools or dealership intervention. This complexity stems from design priorities, regulatory compliance, and advanced technology integration. Below are the key reasons and their implications:
Advanced Lighting Systems
Modern vehicles increasingly use adaptive headlights (e.g., auto-leveling, cornering beams) and integrated LED arrays or laser modules instead of traditional bulbs. These systems are tightly controlled by onboard computers and sensors. For example: Adaptive Headlights: Adjust brightness and direction based on steering input or road conditions. Even minor misalignment can disrupt the entire system, requiring recalibration with proprietary software.
Integrated LED/Laser Modules: Often soldered into sealed assemblies rather than using replaceable bulbs. Replacing them may necessitate swapping the entire headlight unit.
Engineering and Aesthetic Trade-offs
Manufacturers prioritize sleek, aerodynamic designs and compact packaging, which often result in tightly packed engine bays and headlight housings: Space Constraints: Headlights may be fused with grilles, fenders, or bumper components. Accessing the bulb might require removing the wheel well liner, battery, or air filter housing.
Proprietary Fasteners: Custom clips or screws demand specialized tools, discouraging DIY repairs.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety Standards
Strict homologation rules (e.g., SAE, ECE) mandate precise beam patterns, brightness, and alignment. To ensure compliance: Tamper-Proof Designs: Manufacturers discourage aftermarket modifications by sealing systems or using non-standard components. Non-OEM parts risk failing inspections or causing glare hazards.
Self-Leveling Requirements: Adaptive headlights must maintain proper alignment with the road, which can only be reset via dealership diagnostics.
Profit and Service Model
Dealerships and certified repair shops benefit from locked-in servicing: Software Dependencies: Adaptive systems require proprietary diagnostic tools (e.g., OEM scanners) to reset error codes or recalibrate sensors.
Warranty Control: Manufacturers may void warranties if non-certified technicians attempt repairs, steering owners to dealerships.
Safety and Durability Considerations
Sealed Assemblies: Protect sensitive electronics from moisture and dust, ensuring longevity and UV resistance.
Electrical Complexity: Modern bulbs (e.g., HID, LED) require precise voltage regulation. Incorrect handling can damage the vehicle’s electrical system or reduce bulb lifespan.
Key Takeaways Factor Impact on DIY Replacement Advanced Tech Requires calibration tools and software Regulatory Compliance Tamper-resistant designs Aesthetic Design Tight packaging limits access Service Incentives Encourages dealership dependency
Advice for Owners: Consult Manuals: Some models allow bulb access via hidden panels.
Invest in Professional Help: For adaptive or laser systems, dealerships ensure compliance and safety.
Avoid Aftermarket Modifications: Non-homologated parts risk fines or accidents.
While frustrating, these design choices reflect a balance between innovation, safety, and market dynamics. For complex systems, dealerships remain the safest (if pricier) option.
