“Pamela Isley loathes and despises all of humanity, singly and as a species. But apparently she loathes and despises you less than everyone else. Quite a lot less.”
oh to be a silly little clown who's so loved and adored by a plant goddess that when she creates a replica to distract foes and keep her love company, that affection and deep rooted love is already so engrained in her veins that even tho she's not Ivy, she can't help but feel that tug that's more human than she could ever possibly be.

WIP INTRO - Sunless Ground
Genre: Adult contemporary fantasy. Sequel to Seventh Virtue.
Status: Currently drafting / NaNoWriMo project
Synopsis: Harrison is in danger. Captured at the Seventh Roost in a deal that freed Reeve, there’s no way to escape—especially as he’s seemingly made enemies with the man he cares for most. Reeve is unhappy. While physically free from her family’s terror, she spends most of her time worrying for friends she’s not sure are still alive, and resentful of Darren, the man who helped get her out. But when Darren goes missing and Lonan narrowly escapes the Seventh Roost—without Harrison—it seems things couldn’t get worse. Without the protection of Lonan and with his own death impending, Harrison makes internal allies—one of whom is harbouring secrets more sinister than anyone’s expected. Meanwhile, Reeve fixates on searching for the Fourth Virtue whose tragic history could be the key to ending her family’s tyranny, and most importantly, reuniting her with Harrison.
Setting: Manhattan NY, Buffalo NY
Vibe: Houses burning down, a lonely cabin in the woods, shattered prayer candles, icy landscapes, hands almost touching, scraped knuckles, fiery sunsets.
Characters:
Harrison Frost (narrator - 26) | loyal, impulsive, dependable, stubborn
Reeve Aldaine (narrator - 24) | persistent, observant, reclusive, unreliable
Lonan Clark (26) | logical, introspective, ambitious, impulsive
Darren Peterson (27) | sensible, focused, compassionate, reliable
Callahan Stenbeck (27) | assertive, vigilant, patient, cunning
Foster Creed (24) | empathetic, intuitive, wistful, unassuming
Excerpt:
She could lie to herself. Say she’s gotten used to waking every morning at yolky dawn in the bedroom she occupies alone. She’s gotten used to the scalding silence at midnight and gotten used to lighting the candlestick on the nightstand even in the middle of the day. The same instant peach oatmeal Darren keeps buying every time he treks out to the city because she said she liked it once. She can’t bring herself to tell him she can’t handle the flavour anymore, the way she’s gotten used to it and the way she’s gotten used to her hair getting longer, nearly touching her shoulders, the way she’s gotten used to her waxen face in the bathroom’s uncovered mirror. She could lie. But nothing changes the truth even when she stays up all night, rocking back and forth, hoping something will. She made it out—no more running, no more hiding. It’s a good thing, and yet the prospect is so lonely, so frightening, that she sometimes considers walking into the woods until she makes it out the other side a woman who did not survive alone.

i can’t believe people were mad irene/tqt was included in a kidlit competition, as if the animorphs aren’t out here committing war crimes and having the most fucked up endings?? as if darren shan didn’t traumatize all of us in every single book he wrote? as if margaret peterson haddix didn’t kill off what everyone thought would be a main character in her FIRST BOOK and completely change the course of MY LIFE?? louis sachar wrote a scathing criticism of racism where a white teacher watches her school be burned to the ground and her black lover is shot in front of her! HOWL IS OUT HERE GETTING ASS OVER TITS DRUNK AND BEING A FUCKBOY WITH HIS LACROSSE BUDDIES AND WE SHELVE THAT IN THE JUVENILE SECTION!! luke castellan tricks a girl he loves into holding the sky on her back because he’s so traumatized by the uselessness of being turned into a child soldier by a father who will never see him as an individual and then kills himself to save that same girl and i read that at age 13 and lost my ever loving mind over it and we are saying that irene doing some light torture is too teen?? did no one else read coraline at age 11??!
come on, middle schoolers are grown enough to realize that bad things exist in the world, and using magic or sci-fi as a metaphor for real world trauma and hurt to explain big world concepts to younger kids has been a tried and true way of writing a story since the 90s, not every middle schooler wants to only read junie b jones! junie b jones herself would probably prefer a fucked up fantasy story over a rosy colored depiction of real world hurts bc she’s a smart cookie just like many other kids!!

I’m sorry if you’ve gotten this question before but I was explaining Larry to my friend and they asked me “why don’t they just come out if they are dating” and “why put out subtle hints?” and I didn’t know what to say? They also brought up the fact that maybe they hint at it to increase their sales as they know half the fandom will be into it and it will get them more involved. What should I tell them lmao, I trust your judgment over all!!
Hi love. I truly don’t have the energy to rehash this again. The “why don’t they just come out” argument is such an ignorant comment that I barely have patience for it anymore.
I don’t have a simple answer to just hand you. It’s just too enormous a subject to sum up for someone else. Tell your friend to take some time to give some thought to how homophobic the world is, how closeting in the music industry and Hollywood has been around since the dawn of both industries, how marketing and PR works and how artists are simply products that are packaged and sold in order to make the most money. Explain to them how closeted queer people signal their connection to the LGBTQ+ community and that it’s not about “hinting” so they can appeal to more corners of the fandom, but it’s about wanting that sense of belonging, even if they can’t be open about it. But even beyond that, what people often take as signaling or hinting is just a queer person living their life.
Show your friend the horrifically homophobic reactions Harry has gotten any time he’s done something even remotely “gay” and how homophobic and brainless large swaths of his fanbase is. Your friend is essentially using the queerbaiting argument and they should understand how vile an accusation that really is. Show them the MFASR music video and remind them how quick the music industry is to toss you out the minute you’re no longer useful. Point to the queer celebrities who’ve spoken about how horribly they were treated while being closeted in the industry: Darren Hayes, Wentworth Miller, Colton Haynes, Chely Wright, George Shelley, and then other actors who had partners they were with for 11, 18, 19 years before feeling ready/safe to come out (in Cassandra Peterson’s experience in part because she was worried how her fans would respond), or Rupert Everett and Ricky Martin who both have said coming out derailed their careers. Or JoJo Siwa who hasn’t said much, but it’s pretty obvious how it’s affecting her. Don’t forget Lance Bass, Mark Feehily Johnathan Knight, Ricky Martin etc. All former boyband members.
Someone who thinks the world’s biggest pop star, who’s been sold as women’s sexual fantasy for the last dozen years, could simply “just come out” without any repercussions isn’t really thinking at all.

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● this is (if I remember correctly) my first time reading the Riddler in comics! ● (btw, Cory Michael Smith is fabulous as Nygma in Gotham. Aaaand, I have only two degrees of separation from him thanks to a cousin who taught some of the classes where he went to college!) ● (pg 4) wow that scowl of Riddler's is intense! ● oh, it's spelled "Nigma" here ● I like the sepia-toned flashback panels ● (pg 9) ohhh, Eddie admits to cheating. I thought he disliked being accused of that. But I only know him from non-comic book sources, so… ● (pg 10) at least the poor kid who was getting bullied before gets a bit of a break. ● Brian T. Zer = brain teaser. cute ● (pg 17) the tiny parachutes! 💙 ● "Why did the cottage go on a diet?" - hmm… I dunno ● "When's the best time to go to the dentist?" - 2:30 (tooth hurty) ● "What day do soldiers hate the most?" - uh… March fourth? ● riddle 1 - ah, to be a lighthouse (I was right on the other two) ● (pg 20) oo, nice entrance by B-man ● I love the inking and color styles; makes the art feel very noir ● I bet Bruce Wayne is missed at this fundraiser ● … how else does one pronounce "banquet"?
● Query and Echo are having so much fun. I kind of love them. ● (pg 48) Yo-Yo Ma gets a mention! (wrong instrument, though) ● (pg 52) ahhh, I wondered why they'd let him keep his clothes in Arkham! It was a delusion. ● 👏👏👏
Synopsis: The Riddler, occupying an observation room at Arkham Asylum, expresses his annoyance with the inept psychiatrists' repeated attempts to pierce his psyche, and decides to give them what they want: the story of his life, how he became a criminal, and why he repeatedly opposes Batman.
As a child, Edward was a cipher, ignored by even the playground bullies at his school. Hungry for attention (especially with ignorant, unloving parents), the young Edward began his "career" in the sixth grade by cheating at a solve-the-puzzle contest - by sneaking into the school the night before the contest, he was able to practice solving the puzzle, and easily won the contest. Edward's fame proved to be fleeting, however, and the young boy realized that to keep the attention he so craved, he had to turn to his true talent: cheating.
After graduating, Edward became a deliveryman, a job he found extremely tedious. Out of boredom and greed, he began stealing from his clients, but even this could not satisfy his ego. Eventually, he donned the alias of "the Riddler", and started sending riddles to the police foreshadowing his future crimes. The Riddler's early career was fraught with many difficulties, missteps, and a narrow escape from Batman, but nevertheless, he managed to accrue a respectable amount of loot and two loyal henchwomen named Query and Echo.
With Query and Echo, the Riddler came to the crowning caper of his early career: a raid on the Reservoir Street depository that completely misled the police and left him with two million dollars. Once again, Batman narrowly failed to capture him, giving the Riddler a more impressive reputation than ever. Now overconfident, the Riddler planned an even bigger caper: stealing a set of Stradivarius violins from both a private collector and a public opera. Unfortunately, Batman quickly put an end to this caper, handing the Riddler his first unqualified defeat.
As he recounts his humiliation at Batman's hands, the present-day Riddler begins to have a meltdown. In a fit of psychosis, he breaks the one-way glass between him and his doctors, only to realize that his doctors had left on lunch break; he had been telling his life's story to thin air all along. Orderlies rush in and subdue him, leaving the Riddler near-catatonic and muttering "no one there…" on an endless loop.
