really great vid about interpreting data, by Dr. Fatima 😁 i feel lucky to have had a decent Statistics class where i learned a lot of this, but Dr. Fatima puts it into words in a way they never did! plus: a great anecdote at the end about the curb cut effect of data accessibility.
this is also why STEM should be STEAM (A for Art). Art (creativity, design, music, etc) is so important in learning how to understand & communicate what we perceive!!

one 100 word email written with ai costs roughly one bottle of water to produce. the discussion of whether or not using ai for work is lazy becomes a non issue when you understand there is no ethical way to use it regardless of your intentions or your personal capabilities for the task at hand
with all due respect, this isnt true. *training* generative ai takes a ton of power, but actually using it takes about as much energy as a google search (with image generation being slightly more expensive). we can talk about resource costs when averaged over the amount of work that any model does, but its unhelpful to put a smokescreen over that fact. when you approach it like an issue of scale (i.e. "training ai is bad for the environment, we should think better about where we deploy it/boycott it/otherwise organize abt this) it has power as a movement. but otherwise it becomes a personal choice, moralizing "you personally are harming the environment by using chatgpt" which is not really effective messaging. and that in turn drives the sort of "you are stupid/evil for using ai" rhetoric that i hate. my point is not whether or not using ai is immoral (i mean, i dont think it is, but beyond that). its that the most common arguments against it from ostensible progressives end up just being reactionary
i like this quote a little more- its perfectly fine to have reservations about the current state of gen ai, but its not just going to go away.
#i also generally agree with the genie in the bottle metaphor. like ai is here#ai HAS been here but now it is a llm gen ai and more accessible to the average user#we should respond to that rather than trying to. what. stop development of generative ai? forever?#im also not sure that the ai industry is particularly worse for the environment than other resource intense industries#like the paper industry makes up about 2% of the industrial sectors power consumption#which is about 40% of global totals (making it about 1% of world total energy consumption)#current ai energy consumption estimates itll be at .5% of total energy consumption by 2027#every data center in the world meaning also everything that the internet runs on accounts for about 2% of total energy consumption#again you can say ai is a unnecessary use of resources but you cannot say it is uniquely more destructive

EVERYONE SHUT THE FUCK UP AND READ THIS.
THE CURRENT VOTE COUNT IS NOT THE FINAL RESULT.
IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL DAYS TO COUNT ALL OF THE VOTES AND DETERMINE WHO WINS THE ELECTION (POSSIBLY MORE IF A RECOUNT IS NECESSARY).
IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THE FINAL RESULTS WILL NOT LOOK LIKE THE INITIAL RESULTS.
STOP DOOMPOSTING AND LEARN HOW THIS SHIT WORKS.

Fucking funniest thing is, the FBI seizes any links that lead to the genuine Z-Library, but without fail leave up all the scam ones that pretend to be fundraising for Z-Lib.
Anyway, if you have a Z-library login and use it on any z-lib link that ends .is, .io, .to babes you're being scammed! Check the security of the email address you've used and also if you're reusing that particular password anywhere, change it ASAP. If you have made a transaction, block it PRONTO!
Z-lib exists on the concept of free access to books, you have previously been and will always be allowed a limited download of 3 (or 5 or 10) downloads a day, depending on whether you have an account or have made donations.
See, Z-library has fundraised in the past, but they will never cut off your access for not donating. Do you know how much IP law-related trouble they'd be in if they were explicitly charging for access to books that the US legal system already views as 'stolen'?
There are a few ways of accessing them now, most are through torrenting (need help? Reddit or Telegram apparently), many of the regular browser web URLs have been seized.
When in doubt, do not click. Trust your instincts if you feel anything is off. If you're unsure about a z lib link, try a libgen mirror or something else instead.
Posting this here because I know a LOT of readers, students, broke folks that would like access to books, other folks with geographical barriers; basically a lot of folks who might potentially use something like Z-Library. So FYI and heads up, stay safe out there. Change that password! (And feel free to reblog this, again for aforementioned reasons)
#PSA#like I SAW it. I should've guessed earlier; fucking KNEW it was a scam!! Donations are voluntary lmao.#A 'free' library doesn't suddenly bar access like that. Anyway spread this around for the readers#reading#bookblr#books#books and reading#bookworm#writerscommunity#writeblr#student#study blog#studyblr#artists on tumblr#who else might need this?#z library#US politics#that seized page is so fucking smug I hate it so much!!#online safety#internet safety#data privacy#internet privacy#academia#STEMblr

my family: wow you are really interested in this series. You've also read an impressive amount of books by the same author in one year.
me, pointing to the coppermind: I need you to understand that I could be less normal about this. Stormlight has been going on for 14 years, the cosmere for about 20, and I am very new. There's a whole thing about this. I don't have to go through and mine books for information because others have already done that. I could be so much worse.
my family (with the attitude of the "sure jan" gif) ... sure.
me: I could be collecting data. I could be organizing the epitaphs in order by page numbers and making timelines but others have already done that for me. I still might do it. but I don't have to. I am a casual reader in comparison to other cosmere fans.
my family: .... hmm.
#anyway once I have access to particular books that occur later in the cosmere timeline again I will be making a list of information#it will be fun data collection#to be fair- I am new. I only started reading cosmere in January. and now I've read all but 1 book. so I haven't explored the coppermind muc#y'all who work on the coppermind I salute you.#cosmere#stormlight archive

god ok I’ve been reading aella’s public substack. I have a lot of faith in her expertise bc she’s a polyamorous slut who also worked as a camgirl and an escort. she’s also a spreadsheet nerd, and her surveys about kinks and taboos have gone viral, so she has a lot of data to work with. She’s also saying the most bonkers shit
I loved the idea that there were strategies men could use to make me want to have sex with them. I really wanted to have sex, but often had this stupid gatekeeper thing in my brain that would shut down and prevent me from getting sex. Teaching men to do a magical series of moves that would manage to circumvent my gatekeeper and help get me laid was a wonderful thing, and I advised my male friends to try it.
…
I view sex as a success for both of us, and thus seduction is a collaborative activity. We both want the same thing: to get around my annoying brain gatekeeper that got installed there by eons of evolution that doesn’t understand birth control and is trying to evaluate if you’re worthy of impregnating me. So please—use seduction techniques on me. Roleplay as an alpha male well enough to trick my vagina into believing that your cum will give me alpha sons.
Like??? Ok, to be fair, she specified at the beginning that this series of posts was for straight men who were into women who bottom, so this isn’t supposed to apply to me. But are straight women really out here living like this????
I guess if you have a horrible monkey on your back that works against your own interest in sex, then it’s useful to view seduction as instrumental, a useful tool. I do agree with/enjoy the idea of seduction as collaborative. But fuck dude, have you considered getting rid of the monkey?
Maybe I’m too hot for this post. Actually getting laid is easy. Seduction is just something fun to do while you’re still hanging out at the bar.
#op#my dating pool is mostly genderweird bisexuals who like casual sex#so I don’t feel like I run into the problem aella’s describing#I think I’m going to subscribe to her substsck tho to get access to her data

Given the reasons behind 911's move from FOX to ABC (x, x), its ratings and viewers for this season so far, the currently developing spin-off, its year to year evolution, 911 vs its timeslot rivals and other ABC shows (shown below), and this ranking of this year's broadcast shows so far
911 year-to-year evolution:
vs ABC shows (this season):
vs timeslot rivals:
...
#I don't have access to +7 or streaming data which obviously are more important than L+SD but... let's speculate anyway#(also I'm not fully confident I've matched the episodes correctly but whatever. Close enough)#so imo: at worst I give them a renancel for a shortened s9 that would at midseason get substituted with the spinoff#at best: a normal renewal BUT I'd still expect either s9 or s10 to be the last one#Tv stuff#Tv: 911#bucktommy <- for reach. I wanna know what you all think#long post

I think what really kicked in my whole rants about internet privacy was that time I went to Google and it showed my home city address right there on the bottom, even after I told it not to use my location. I remember a time when that was an unthinkable breach of privacy. Now they were almost flaunting it. It's like "yes, we know where you are, what are you gonna do about it?"
In fact, you log into Google Maps and the first thing it offers you, before anything that could be used as a service like say local events, is a prompt to enter your home and work address. It's insane.
It was always insane, actually, and I know ticking some boxes won't exactly stop all the data collection. But it was almost insulting to me. It really opened my eyes to say "oh, this has gone too far". I've always used Firefox and other free software, but now that everything is turning to shit, I'm accelerating my plans to move away from Google, Microsoft, Meta, and basically everything else.
#cosas mias#even if say Google Maps or any such service accesses your location to show where you are#it should be done while using the program and when you close it all data should be deleted#of course this doesn't happen and they still collect it

"For both bonobos and chimpanzees, the bodies of the dead evoke many emotions. Even if the process often begins with trauma and confusion, typically corpses shift to a liminal status; not alive, but equally not a lump of meat. They're more intensively manipulated than hunted animals, and carried for longer. In some – if not all – cases, the eaters must know what and who they're consuming. Cannibalism is very probably a powerful means by which individuals and groups process the impact not only of killings carried out on emotional impulses, but other deaths too. In other words, it's about grieving. [...] "Shift these scenarios to Neanderthals, and add into the mix their far greater cognitive sophistication, and lives that revolved around using lithics. Suddenly it's not difficult to envision how skills in carefully taking apart hunted carcasses might be transposed into a grieving process that involved butchery and cannibalism as acts of intimacy, not violation."
Rebecca Wragg Sykes, Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art
