Worth it- 141 & Laswell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pic credits: @gamergirlbonestaskforce141riot (left)and @ave661 (middle)
Based on a request: Wait, wait, first of all hope you're doing well and make sure to drink a glass of water if you haven't already. Cozy? Yeah? Okay, Can I request something (you can choose whether it's a HCor not,etc etc) on how TF141 would react to meeting a teen boy around 15-16, who's like a genius in engineering, mathematics, and physics? Like the boy could legitimately build a rocket if he had the time, help and materials. Maybe the meet him because he got in trouble with the government for unknowingly making a weapon? Maybe he made it for a class assignment and it was stolen without his knowledge? Whatever you think makes sense here. Leaving space for you to enter your own creative thoughts, just the general idea of it. The boy is based on a character of mine from a book I'm writing, his name his Michael, but ofc you can switch that up however you wish. Have fun with this one Ignore if it doesn't sound fun to ya <3 ---- M!Reader, genius!reader, platonic!relationship? ----
A/N: drank enough water, thanks for the reminder <3
Y/N, the name of the unknown internet user that had been chased by many governments and caught by the one and only Task Force 1-4-1.
You created something so dangerous that no one believed Laswell when she told her bosses the age you had when you started all this. You created the one thing most geniuses working for the government didn't know existed outside of the numbers and graphs they had done for it. At first, the FBI had named you un-sub A. Now, they can finally put a name to the unknown face.
How were you caught? Well, it wasn't easy, let's start there. When all this mess began, you were no older than fifteen. You are practically a ticking bomb to the government so when they heard that someone was asking the right questions to chemists around your city, they began to search for you. Laswell at the time was on a small break from work but the journals you had left in your parent's home when you ran away one rainy day.
In the journals, Laswell found all she needed to have a task force assigned to find you. She called it Operation Mikey, the name was just to fill in the void of the one thing she couldn't find, you.
Your parents weren't much help in giving your name, hence why Mikey became a temporary replacement. With them high off any drug and you on the run with the rest of your journals, Price was tasked with finding you and making sure you were secured in their care.
For three months, you ran away. Moving to different cities and continuing your research of the chemical weapon you fabricated in your bedroom, the same one Laswell had locked in a laboratory somewhere in the capital of the country.
In month four, you found an abandoned building in the middle of the desert. That's where your laboratory, if you can call it that, began.
For months after that, you collected data and it wasn't until nine months later that Soap found you trading chemicals with some scientist that you were caught.
Once you were brought in, they had realised so much about you. You were way younger than what their profile had thought of, much more intelligent than they'd think a person your age was and so skilled in engineering, mathematics, and physics.
"Why didn't we find his information sooner," Laswell questions her bosses. "Kid was never even registered by his parents." The man on the phone answers. "How the hell did he even get this kind of education then?" She asks again but you had that answer.
"My parents just bought me books and hired a weird guy from the street to teach me anything," you respond and Price chuckles. "Bullshit, kid. Now tell us, how the hell did you get all of these journals?" He points to the evidence bags. Your research of months now being read by other scientists.
"I am the creator of them, not let me go," you protest against Ghost's grip on you. "No chance," Price barks. "What's your real name?" Laswell asks you. "Y/N," you answer knowing it was either this or get thrown in some federal prison.
"And you created this weapon? do you have any idea how dangerous it is to create something like this? How many people it would take to create a mathematical concept and then make it into a physical form?"
"It's not that hard, lady," you answer with an attitude. Were people this dumb?
It took hours, lots of bribing and one request from Soap and Gaz to give you food for you to open up. What? you are a teenager who needs enough food for growth, of course, you'll talk once they give you food. Talking and having to dumb it down took hours though. After all, how can you explain to hardheaded soldiers about probability theory, and why it mattered so much to your project that it took ten trials and two journals worth of failed work to get?
Laswell was more than impressed, no seriously, she was like a proud mother listening to you explain every page and even give notes in only a way that a teenage boy would to idiotic adults like them. She thought it was so adorable how a boy your age would throw nerdy jokes into the explanations and how she watched you be the only one to laugh at them.
Ghost would often smile when you'd give a snarky comment to Price. Don't get him started on the chuckles he let out when you threw a few old man jokes at Price or made comments on Soap's weird hairstyle. The comments towards Gaz were funny but also adorable how you tried to find more reasons to get him annoyed.
Price thought of his son who was about your age when you'd get excited over your most recent discovery for the weapon you had created. It was nice to know that behind all that matter in your head, you were still a kid. It was even nicer when you'd make the jokes no one understood but secretly, Price's nerdy self understood some jokes.
Gaz saw his younger brother in you, which is why even when you made jokes at his expense, he would let them pass. The way you looked at him when having to explain things was nice in some way but it was way funnier when you called Soap the smart one of all four for being able to understand the way bombs work better than anyone and then have Ghost shake his head and tell you, "that man is just a muppet, don't believe what we tell you about his work."
Soap was fascinated by you for sure. Just like Price, he understood some of the jokes, even the cheesy puns you made about certain elements. He liked you, it was something fresh from the people he usually deals with.
The team, for the past few days, grew to adore the nerdy man you are. Yeah, you teased and even called them out on wrong facts but it was new. It's good to have someone so intelligent and be so honest with them this time. What was funny is that you know so much about many topics few understand but you don't know much about real life outside of the nerdy realm you live in. It's a nice feeling when passing by Laswells office you find a framed picture of the day Ghost and the other men of the team taught you about hunting and even how to play baseball, something you sucked at in the beginning but have gotten better over time.
It's like having four funny, serious, and cool dads and an amazing mum whilst being taken care of at the base the team called home.
A/N: I hope this was somewhat okay and good luck on your book!

I need more tfo Megatron and Ophelia, so may I request some of them? Like Megatron seeing her again? My poor man didn't keep anyone all stayed with Optimus, so maybe he gets his daughter?
Here's some TFONE Ophelia and Meg's for ya!
Hope you enjoy!
3 Time's Megatron almost saw Ophelia and the 1 time Ophelia saw Megatron
SFW, Platonic, Familial, Mention of injuries, Slight Angst, Cybertronian reader
TFONE
The First time.
Recruitment.
With the exile of the High Guard and Megatron, there had been a bit of a stir around Iacon.
More specifically, after a sudden surge in Decepticon pamphlet propaganda.
Ophelia, deciding to help Optimus from his busy work schedule, went down to the mines.
A place where Elita had concluded where most of the pamphlets were coming from.
Maybe if she could collect a crate full it would help.
What she didn’t know was that Megatron himself was in the same mines under disguise to give out the pamphlets.
Ophelia was about to go to the area where the carts were, but her pedes instead took her to the old recharge stations.
Specifically, to D-16’s old slab.
Ophelia carefully runs her digit over one of the many Megatronus Prime stickers. She sighs mournfully before her optics catch a carefully hidden sticker in between the slits. Ophelia: “Huh? What do we have here?” After a bit of wiggling it around, she pulled out the perfectly clean and slightly dusted stickers of Megatronus and Micronus Prime. On the back it had small writing on it. Ophelia: “To Ophelia… for your first Iacon 500 race…Oh dad…” She quietly slipped in the stickers into her subspace and walked into another room. A few moments later Megatron quietly walked over to the same slab. He quickly noticed the lack of stickers in his secret compartment. Megatron had gone back here to get those stickers for the little shine of his deceased daughter. Megatron’s optics went wide at the lack of stickers. Megatron: “No, no, no, no, no…” Those were the last things he ever bought for Ophelia… and now they were gone… He quietly stood over the slab for a minute before joining back to his team.
The Second time.
Center riots
Turns out those pamphlets worked a bit too good.
Now there was a growing number of bots who were sympathizing with the Decepticons.
Something that worried everyone in the inner circle.
Optimus, being the protective guardian he was, told B-127 and Ophelia to stay in his new office to help sort out some files.
Both of them knew what the Prime was doing.
He wanted them as far from the street fights as possible, believing he could solve them himself.
B wanted to go and help, but Ophelia told him not to.
Orion—Optimus was already stressed enough, the last thing he needed was worrying about them being out.
Besides, helping him with the literal mountain of data pads was helping.
B-127’s helm emerging from one of the piles of datapads. B-127: “I think I found some slugs about the Quintessons.” Ophelia was sitting on top of a higher pile, reading the datapad intently. Ophelia: “Put it in the pile closest to the door.” B goes over to place them in the pile. B-127: “…Hey Lia, do you ever think on what D—I mean Megatron is doing right now?” Ophelia paused. Ophelia: “…Yeah… A lot actually… I just hope he is happy with his decisions.” She added a bit of bitterness and hurt at the end of her comment. B gave her a sympathetic smile. B-127: “But I bet he would be proud of you reading all these datapads.” Ophelia flinched a bit. It was still a bit sore to talk about her father. Ophelia: “I guess.” Meanwhile in the building’s center outside… Megatron is standing in the middle of it with his canon raised. Megatron: “JOIN ME! AND YOU WILL NEVER BE—” WHACK! Optimus jumped from a nearby balcony and punched him straight in the face.
The Third time
The train.
Seeing as Optimus was finally letting go a bit of his protectiveness, he had assigned B-127 and Ophelia to help escort with the help a couple other bots, some energon crates that were supposed to go to the other side of Iacon.
B and Ophelia were in the cart in front of the other bots and the crates.
It took a few minutes for the train to start moving for the Cons to strike.
Megatron himself leading the charge.
Their objective?
Get the energon crates.
Ophelia was the smallest to get in between the trains cable control and make the emergency stop.
Completely unaware her father was literally in the next cart.
Optimus is sitting at his desk looking tense. Elita is by his side. Elita: “I’m sure their fine. They are literally babysitting a bunch of boxes.” Optimus sighs a bit. Optimus: “I guess—” He stops when he gets a call from B-127. Optimus: “B?! What happened?!” Elita: “Don’t do that! Its probably nothing to big.” B-127: “There’s a couple of Cons in the back carts and I think there’s a small fire and Lia disappeared in the box and –ACK!” The sound of screeching and a panic yell had both bots on their pedes. Optimus: “B! B?! What’s going on!?” B-127: “Lia stopped the train!... But if you can hurry it a bit the cursing is getting louder.” Both Elita and Optimus are sprinting out of the room. With Megatron… Megatron is slowly getting up, having narrowly avoided getting crushed by a crate of energon. Megatron: “Why does this seem familiar…”
The one-time Ophelia saw her father.
All she wanted to do was get some datapads from a special jolt in the archives.
But now she was stuck in a heavily soundproof room with a single piece of glass separating her from the main computer.
It would take an hour or two before the system rebooted.
She was no doubt going to hear a lecture from Elita after she got out of here.
She was, however, not prepared for the sudden blast from the neighboring wall.
The debris nearly covered the entire glass wall.
But thanks to all the shaking, a rigid piece of the ceiling had fallen straight into her right servo.
Her screams of pain were not heard by the Decepticons pouring into the room.
The mini tried to take it out but after seeing a couple of sensitive wires she stopped.
One wrong yank and she could completely ruin her arm and any chances for a replacement servo.
Through the little window of debris free glass, she saw him.
Megatron pointing and seemingly yelling at some of the High Guard to get some things.
This had been the first time since Sentinel Prime’s death that she had seen her father.
Spark breaking seeing how angry and hard he was.
Ophelia tried to reach for the glass. Reach to him. Ophelia: “Megatron! Megatron!” She tried scooting towardshim but winced at her injured servo. Ophelia: “Dad! Dad help! Help me! DAD! DAD HELP ME! PLEASE! DAD!” The Cons were moving out of the room with bits of tech. The last one in the room being Megatron and herself. He had stopped and looked around. Almost as if looking for something… or someone. A bit of hope perhaps? That was the moment Ophelia saw him. The little crack of D-16 in his weary and sadden optics. Her own optics widened reading the one word that fell from him. Her name. And he was leaving. Flashes of that day surfaced too quickly. He was going to leave again. Leave without her. Ophelia: “Dad! DAD I’M HERE! DAD PLEASE I’M RIGHT HERE! DON’T LEAVE ME! DAD PLEASE DON’T! DAD!” But he couldn’t hear her. Megatron stood straighter and leaped out of the building, leaving a screaming and sobbing Ophelia pinned to the floor. The tears didn’t leave her optics as she counted down the minutes before help would arrive. Her mind replaying the scene over and over again. The tiny glimpse of D-16 appearing and disappearing in a nanoseconds Ophelia: “…Dad…dad why…”

I'm not sure this is exactly what you're expecting but I had a lot of fun writing it. I hope you enjoy it and thanks so much for the great prompt!
Interrogation
Hunter let out a yawn as he boarded the steps of the Marauder. The soft breathing of Omega in the gunners mount would have been drowned out by the roaring snoring of Wrecker for anyone but him. He yawned again before making his way to the cockpit and his brother, Tech.
“Ah. You have returned. Were you able to secure the needed data?”
Hunter collapsed into the copilot’s seat and ran his hand through his hair. “As much as could without drawing suspicion,” Hunter said, smiling at his brother who was adamant about avoiding eye contact.
Tech pushed a button on the console in front of him and the cockpit doors slid closed with a hiss.
“Well? Are you pausing for dramatic effect or do you require additional prompting?” Tech said, finally turning his eyes to his brother, pressing his goggles up his nose as he did so.
Hunter sighed, trying to recall the extensive conversation he’d had on behalf of his younger brother.
“Shep said he met Phee about fifteen years ago in a war-torn area. She was looking for an artifact and he had some knowledge of the local area. They hit it off and he joined her on a few expeditions.”
“This is presumably before Lyana was…ah…”
“Yes,” Hunter interrupted as his brother stumbled over his words. It was a rarity which proved to Hunter just how uncomfortable he was with this kind of subject. Tech turned back to his datapad but nodded for Hunter to continue.
“But then he met his wife, they fled to Pabu with Phee’s help and Lyana was born here.”
“So, there wasn’t any…ahh,”
“As far as I could tell he and Phee were never together. Does that satisfy you?”
“it’s no concern of mine whether…”
“Then why did I have to concoct an excruciatingly convoluted conversation to get the information you asked for?” Hunter asked. “It wasn’t until Phee joined us that I started getting somewhere.”
“Phee joined you?” Tech said, suddenly sitting up straighter. “You didn’t let her know you were inquiring for me? What exactly did she say? Tell me verbatim, I don’t trust your hyperbole in these kinds of situations.”
“Of course I didn’t say it was for you.” Hunter said with an eye roll, “you know Phee, she doesn’t need much encouragement to talk,”
“Hmm. I suppose you are correct.” Tech said to himself.
“Still, I would prefer to hear how the conversation went. I know there can be physical cues in these situations that may be missed. Did she…” Tech checked his data pad, “touch her hair or make physical contact with Shep during the conversation?”
“Tech, you can’t be serious?”
Hunter looked at his brother with amusement. It wasn’t rare to see Tech out of his comfort zone, He struggled with basic interactions that came easily to Hunter and Wrecker, but to see him delve into these unspoken feelings for Phee was unusual. He’d never asked for intel on anyone who wasn’t a target before. Let alone interrogate him about the subject matter. Hunter tried to turn a laugh into a cough. The last thing he wanted was for Tech to think he was making fun of him. He knew his brother was struggling and wanted to help.
“I do not know what you are smiling about, brother, but I am sure I do not appreciate it.”
“Have you ever thought about maybe telling Phee how you feel?” Hunter asked gently.
“No.” Tech said simply, raising his eyes questioningly at his brother.
Hunter put his head in his hands, shaking his head.
“Tech, she obviously likes you. We’ve only been here a couple of days and you’re the only one she’s asked to accompany her into the archium or go for walks on the beach. You know she likes you in a romantic way, right?”
Tech shifted uncomfortably in his seat. And lowered his eyes, “I am aware that she has assigned me a nickname out of affection and that this act hasn’t been extended to the rest of the squad. However, I do not think there is any definitive data to say she is interested in me in a romantic fashion.”
“She’s interested in you, Tech!,” Hunter said louder than he intended. He pursed his lips and brought his eyes up to meet his brother, “sorry,” he said, “but you need to figure out what you want to do about it because if we stay here, things will come to a head.”
Tech blinked rapidly; Hunter could almost hear the gears turning inside his head.
“I do not know what to do,” he said finally, an admission that Hunter didn’t think he’d ever heard come out of his mouth before. “I am aware that you have had dalliances over the years. You are the closest I have to a subject matter expert. How would you approach this situation?”
“Tech I really don’t think…”
“Hunter,” he interrupted. “I am asking for your help. Please. What should I do?”
Hunter looked at his brother with a great deal of sympathy. There wasn’t much Tech didn’t know or couldn’t figure out on his own but connection, interaction with others was the one thing his giant brain couldn’t comprehend.
“I’m no expert, Tech. But if you like Phee and want to spend more time with her I think you should tell her how you feel in your own way. We all see how you are around her. You smile more, you seem happy. Just let yourself be happy and if you’re unsure where you stand, just ask her. She’ll probably find it charming.”
Tech nodded thoughtfully. “So, what you’re saying is that additional research is needed, and I am the one that needs to do it?”
Hunter laughed and clapped his brother on the shoulder, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”
Tech nodded again, deep in thought and turned back to his datapad.
“I’m going to get some rest. Wake me when it’s my watch.” “Of course.” Tech said, not taking his eyes off his datapad.
The cockpit doors opened again, and Wrecker’s snores now sounded like bomb detonation.
“Hunter?” he heard tech call softly behind him.
“hmm?”
‘“Thank you,” he said with a nod of appreciation.
Hunter nodded and smiled back. He yawned again and crawled into the spare rack. He thought of Phee animatedly talking to Shep about his brother on one of their missions together. They would be alright, he thought before drifting softly to sleep.

Why do you use '+' and '/' instead of words? Not to be rude, I am curious
LOL thank you for being polite about this. i've gotten some pretty rude/condescending comments or tags about it (one person just tagged a post of mine "you can just type out 'and' babes, it's fine" which like... fuck off?). one person tagged a post of mine 'for further study' specifically of my syntax which my friends + family had a FIELD DAY with
there's a few reasons- partly bcuz i communicate via textspeak quite regularly + my texting is actually so much more atrocious bcuz i do not make an attempt to correct most typos. i keep pretty intense hybrid academic/field note/personal journals + i already used '+' in those for brevity's sake so that i could write faster. additionally, i have a compulsion which sometimes makes me feel the need to write words 3x before moving on but symbols/numbers are not usually affected by this + i suppose that on the flip side, my liberal use of / is related to the compulsive need to be as thorough as possible (as well as put things in 3s) + a fear that i will miss information + 'spoil' my point. i do very genuinely worry that my points will be 'wrong'/'contaminated'/'bad' if i don't put certain things in 3s.
but also, when i was hospitalized in 2022 i got very attached to my concepts related to dialectics + multiplicity + i got a tattoo of the '+' sign to represent this. with language, my goal is usually to tear it up (forgive me but that beckett quote rules my life) rather than string it together. using things like '+', '/', '|', liberal use of '()', etc (i've also felt quite compelled to make use of the assignment operator, '< -', but i'm probably going to confine that to poetry for the time being) lets me feel like i'm seeding my language with a sense of multiplicity while remaining (more) concise (than i could have been)
also also, i do a lot of programming for my job (like statistics/data analysis programming in R) + i've gained a great appreciation for the brevity/precision/elegance offered by programming. similarly, i do a lot of translation (well not so much anymore due to The Tasks) which similarly has brought me to a much more antagonistic relationship with the limitations of language + a desire to capture the thing in between it which is perhaps a really silly thing to claim i could do by replacing my '+' signs but. someday.
needless to say, my formal academic writing is NOT like this but my hope is to someday gain the resources i need from academic in such a way that i can dedicate 100% of my time to writing which aligns with these values.
if this seems excessive, it is because i am insane. hope that helps.

4 years of running BentoVid & RICE (an extremely long & meandering retrospective about survey data) This is an entry that's part history about the fanvid server I run that hosts a [now] feedback event [then contest] called RICE, and part data analysis from 4 years of pre-RICE survey data and one post-RICE survey from a particularly "problematic" year of the event. Read the entry as it was intended on dreamwidth by clicking the link above, or expand the cut tag and hope the html I pasted into tumblr displays correctly. [edit: it doesn't, but it's readable if you don't care about line breaks.]
Preface
Or, the time I accidentally influenced an entire industry through a survey question (click to read more) In 2015, I created a website called fursuitreview.com (FSR). Fursuits (one of a kind whole body animal costumes) are expensive and it was hard to keep track of makers that didn't have huge followings. I didn't want to run a review page, but only two existed prior to mine. One had died completely several years before, and the other one updated so infrequently it was almost useless (it, too, eventually died after FSR took off). The other two pages were a victim of putting too much work on themselves. The first had several questions reviewers had to answer and assign points. The moderators would average all the points for each review and give the overall review a score out of ten. This ensured consistency in the scores across all reviews. It was an amazing system but it would simply take too long to do myself (plus I'm terrible at math). Both sites were not actually sites - they were user accounts on furaffinity.net (and sometimes tumblr or livejournal) - which required write-ins to copy a big block of text and hope they got the format right (they rarely did, which meant moderators would have to correct it). FSR started out on furaffinity, but very quickly moved to a wordpress website. I thought very carefully on how I would keep manhours and costs down. I decided to not have any user accounts at all, nor would I bother with a numbered rating system (I instead went with a "positive / neutral / negative" system because that's really what everything boils down to anyway). I devised the least amount of questions I could in order to pry the information I wanted out of fursuit buyers when they wrote in. This resulted in two sections: wear satisfaction, and visual satisfaction. Each section had several sample questions to help guide the writer. "Wear satisfaction" was like, do you like how it fits you? how is the ventilation? how is the vision? Visual satisfaction was questions about looks.
Tumblr media
Example screenshot of the FSR "wear Satisfaction" questions from 2020+
When people submitted a review, I would read over them all and make sure everything was copacetic before publishing it. Back then (before 2020), I was a one-man operation so I read literally every single review coming in. I noticed that some writers would mention lining in some of the fursuit parts. Most parts are unlined - it's just faux fur and the backing of that will be up against a wearer's skin. Lining is unnecessary and can ultimately make the costume much hotter - but it does make everything look really nice and marginally more comfortable to wear. After a few of these, I added "Does the item have lining?" to the list of sample questions.
Does the item have lining?
Surely nothing bad could happen from such an innocuous question!! (upside down smiley face goes here)
I must take a break here to mention that I had no experience doing literally anything that FSR required to run. I had bought 3-4 fursuits and thought it would be nice to keep track of my opinions of them. Everything else, from coding a website to writing survey questions, I had taught myself. I had some very very basic wordpress experience from a personal roleplaying character wiki wordpress site for myself, but that was it. FSR was a learn by doing experience. And boy, was it an experience. Writing, reading, reviewing, editing, customer service... FSR had me dealing with it all, and I'm surprised it gained as much traction as it did throughout that process.
So, needless to say, I had no idea what "survey bias" was.
Weeks, possibly months, later, I was browsing twitter keeping up with FSR social stuff, when I came across a tweet from a rather well-known maker (I believe it was either beetlecat or beastcub) asking other fursuit makers why customers were suddenly asking for their fursuits to be lined. I wish I had a link to this tweet, but I no longer have a twitter account. (If you happen to find it, do link it in the comments!) It didn't hit me at first. I watched the thread and the responses roll in. As other makers replied, the sense of dread was very slowly overtaking me. Could FSR really have that much influence? Could just a single little sentence really cause so much strife? Yes, it did, and yes... It did. Once I connected the dots, I edited the sample questions. No longer is it simply "Does the item have lining?" Now it is: "If it is lined, what material was used? Does it absorb sweat appropriately? Does it make cleaning easier?" But I went through a few iterations before I got to that wording. I believe my first edit was something like "(Note: most fursuits aren't lined)", but that didn't properly imply that you shouldn't be asking your maker for lining. After this lining snafu, I had to go through all of my questions and determine what I was accidentally influencing, how that could change what customers ask of their makers, and if I really needed that information in the review to begin with. I also, finally, learned about survey bias, and took some time to read up a little more on how to craft survey questions. And, of course, I had to come to grips with the fact that, yes, FSR was big. And it had influence. My little side project was a staple of the community and people counted on it to make very expensive purchases. Maker reputations and business operations began to live or die by the reviews we pulled in. FSR got to be too big and too much stress for me, so I ended up giving full ownership of the site to someone else in 2022 or 2023 (it was a long transition and I'm not sure when the public announcement was made). However, as of today (31 March 2024), fursuitreview.com is still fundamentally unchanged from how I was running it - including the review form. Nowadays, I have nothing to do with the site. I couldn't deal with the stress and responsibility once it grew to be a community cornerstone. Unfortunately, history may be repeating itself with the project I replaced FSR with...
A brief history of BentoVid (and RICE)
I have been editing anime music videos (AMVs) since 2001. I took a hiatus from the community from 2009ish to 2018. Despite that, I still managed to make at least one video every year. In 2018, I tried to get back into the community and realized it had almost completely changed. Discord was a thing now, and it seemed most of the activity was on there. I joined a few servers, but long story short they all weren't great. In a fit of frustration and annoyance, I did the classic move of going "Screw this, I'll do it myself!"
Tumblr media
Bender (from Futurama): Fine! I'll start my own chatroom with blackjack and hookers! I glossed over it, but this is exactly how FursuitReview.com also started.
BentoVid (called AMV Sashimi back then) was created in September 2020. Back then, I did have high hopes. I did "plan" (finger quotes) on becoming a large community, but it was like how anyone plans on winning the lottery, you know? You don't actually expect it to happen. I thought that realistically I'd get maybe 30 members and it'd be just a chill hangout spot. But in 2021, we reached the fabled 100 members. Then 200. We broke 400 this year. And outside the very first year, I didn't actively promote. BentoVid has grown purely from word of mouth since 2021. On the other side of Discord was an annual AMV contest related to a particular anime convention. I first joined it in 2019. It was... okay... But not great. 2020 went even worse. The contest was going through a transition period and had a coordinator that, to put it mildly, was not well-liked. The concept behind the contest (which had been running for several years - I think 2005? Possibly even earlier) was great though. It was a contest focused on peer review. All the editors that submitted to the contest were the judges and voted on the winner. It was a blind contest, so nobody knew who made what, but only people who submitted to the contest could view and vote on the videos. The feedback was cruel. People did not hold back. Still, it was helpful, and I excelled my skills a lot by participating. The contest's discord server, however, went unmoderated and the coordinator made some very bizarre decisions. Another "Screw it, I'll do it myself" event occurred. RICE - Rewards imagined by a community of editors - was born by taking that other contest and implementing all the feedback participants had been complaining about for years. February 2021 was the first RICE. I had never run a contest before. Just like FSR (from the preface story), this was a trial by fire. I made at least one huge mistake every year the contest ran. But ultimately people liked RICE, and word of mouth about it (and the server) grew ever faster because of it. I had taken efforts to specifically NOT advertise RICE outside the BentoVid discord server, but that didn't stop it from growing.
4 years of RICE survey data
Partly due to my inexperience and partly due to my history with FSR, I put out RICE feedback surveys at every opportunity. I am actually not that into data. I don't analyze this stuff and I have no particular interest in collecting data at every turn for random things. I just find feedback surveys somewhat convenient and useful for my purposes. Sorry to people who are into that! XD
Pre-RICE survey data from 2021 - 2024
I have a small survey when people submit videos to RICE. It has (mostly) the same questions every year. Vivafringe helped me go through the data, and here are the results. (links to a google sheet) 2021 - 2023, the optional survey was on the same page as video submission questions. In 2024, I finally realized google form sections existed and I put it on a totally different page. I went from a 100% response rate to 58%. What a huge difference! But still inspiring to see so many people went out of their way to answer regardless. Here's my personal takeaways: US vs Non-US I personally thought there were more international editors participating, but it seems to hover around 20%. Do people keep their videos a secret? It looks like most of the survey respondents actually do attempt to keep their videos secret from everyone. However, almost as many people admit at least one person they know who will also be in RICE knows what their video is. I honestly thought it'd be the other way around, with more people sharing betas before RICE, so this is actually pretty cool to see. Thoughts on blind judging This question was multiple choice with only one answer allowed, so they had to choose which meant most to them. Most people seem to appreciate blind judging, but don't go out of their way to keep themselves blind during the event. (~70% combined) A large minority of people admit that guessing who made what during the event is part of the fun for them. (~25%) One possible answer was that blind judging is never truly blind - interesting to note only one person ever selected this and it was in 2023. Main reason for entering RICE? Another multiple choice answer where they had to select the "main" reason. Most people join RICE because they like the BentoVid community. However, almost as many people join because they like peer review. I'm flattered! lol But, in all seriousness, I really expected those results would be flipped, with peer review outranking BentoVid. Categories A multiple checkbox question for which categories your submitted vid belongs to, according to the editor. I mostly only care about theme, coordinator's choice, and live-action. Theme has submissions starting at 18% in 2021 and gradually going up to 29% in 2024. 2023 is an outlier with 39%. Coordinator's choice is very low. 1 - 3 videos. This is mixed news for me. On one hand, I think it's great people don't feel the need to pander to me (or maybe they don't know how). On the other hand... Please pander to me! XD Live-action is something I would like to see more of... The discord server started out as an AMV server and its audience is still mostly AMV editors. But I really want BentoVid (and RICE, by extension) to be about all fanvids and vidding (Hence the name change from AMV Sashimi to BentoVid). Long story short, live-action vids are obviously a very small minority that get submitted (5 - 9 videos each year), but they fluctuate between years. If you like live-action fanvids and want to join an active discord server... Please join us! lol How did you learn about RICE? This question was a small text field people could write whatever they wanted in. No surprise people learned about it from inside BentoVid. Next highest was word of mouth-related answers like "discord," "another discord server" or "friends". A little interesting was when AWA or POE were specifically mentioned (two popular AMV contests), but this was only twice for each.
Post-RICE survey data
2021 and 2022 had a feedback survey, but it was just one text block that asked for comments. Very few people ever filled this out and it was not very actionable feedback. 2023 was the first post-RICE feedback survey with actual guided questions, and it's because 2023 was... quite the year.
Tumblr media
Understatement.
What happened during 2023 RICE?
Remember the contest I mentioned that RICE was based on? While RICE was thriving, that contest was floundering. The other contest, which for the rest of this blog I will call "HOST," happens in September - October, while RICE happens in February - March. 2022 HOST was another transition year for them. The old coordinator ("Elder") took over the contest after so many complaints about the coordinator that succeeded them ("Junior"). As far as I know, everyone was happy with Junior's leaving, but unfortunately it wasn't pretty. We weren't kind to Junior. Bridges were burned. Elder had some great ideas on how to bring HOST back up to its former glory days. But, procrastination got the better of them, so the contest started out very poorly. Then, during the contest, they had an extremely public and embarrassing meltdown. A number of people withdrew from the contest because of it. A totally different person ("Kidd") had to take over mid-event. The discord server went through an emergency restructure so Elder didn't have any special permissions anymore. Kidd was an absolute gem and managed to run the rest of the contest on their own very smoothly (Kidd continued through 2024 and deserves accolades). But the already negative reputation of HOST definitely turned into a dumpster fire after that. It was no surprise that RICE got touted as a good alternative. I was expecting more RICE entries than the previous year but. Boy. I was just not prepared. 2023 RICE saw 56 editors and 76 videos. The prior year was only 32 editors and 45 videos. RICE does not scale well. Moreover, I was experiencing horrible health issues at the time and really should have delayed or cancelled RICE due to them. Consequently, some people did not have a good experience with RICE. I thought the entire year was ruined. I made a pretty involved post-RICE survey due to it. This survey was mostly questions with text boxes where people wrote exactly what they were feeling. This made the answers a lot more personal and detailed. I will not be sharing the raw 2023 survey data. The complaints were about:
Too many videos for too short a time period
Some people were rude in the discord when discussing categories
Some people attacked one of the people giving critique in a voice call
I tried to enforce [very badly worded] content restrictions very late into the submission window. This had editors unnecessarily scrambling to re-edit things and ultimately ended up with multiple versions of videos in the contest [which should not have happened and that is entirely on me]
To me, the responses of the 2023 survey looked pretty dire. I immediately made changes to RICE following them. While RICE had started out as an improved version of HOST, I also had wanted the goal to be rewards for BentoVid server regulars. That's why I really didn't want to advertise it outside the server. I also never pinged \@Everyone or made a special role to get updates about it. The intent was if you were around the server, you'd know it was coming, and that was that. I wanted the good peer review and critique so we could all improve. I also wanted to see amazing videos. But what I DIDN'T want - and was (surprisingly!) NEVER concerned with - was lots of randos who didn't care about BentoVid. I explicitly never posted about RICE on a-m-v.org (despite people asking me to), and I never mentioned RICE outside my own server until after 2022 HOST. And even then it was really only in DM or if someone else had brought it up first. I still try to not advertise RICE, but I'm not as tight-lipped as I used to be. Still, it's primarily in DM. But anyway, I'm rambling now - the point is that RICE grew outside of the BentoVid bubble. People were joining RICE who did not care about BentoVid as a whole and I had to figure out how to handle that. My previous RICE messaging of "feedback event but also contest!" was fine for BentoVid regulars. We mostly knew what we liked and understood eachother because we hung out all the time. But for people new to RICE and/or the server, they had no idea and came in with false expectations. My two main takeaways from the 2023 Post-RICE survey were: 1. Because of my health issues and the mass increase of participants, the Discord server went (essentially) completely unmoderated during RICE. Because RICE (and BentoVid) is usually closely moderated, many conversations/debates went on a lot longer than they should have (because no moderators stepped in), which caused a lot of stress for participants. 2. The messaging of RICE was conflicting and led people to false expectations. People were essentially expecting HOST but "run better." "HOST but run better" is an over-generalization of how RICE works. It's actually quite different from HOST, but without the context of being a BentoVid regular, one wouldn't have that information. The first would be solved simply by me being present. Myself and most my staff could not be present during 2023 (honestly I'm surprised RICE ran as well as it did without us. Speaks a lot to our community!). To deal with the second point, I decided to focus on clearing up and changing RICE's messaging. Clearing the messaging had a few purposes:
More clearly differentiate RICE from HOST
Discourage non-regulars from joining without being super exclusionary about it
Discourage overtly competitive people from joining RICE
Encourage feedback-orientated participants
Focus more on accessibility (as RICE already applied VPR to all entries, it made sense to extend accessibility in other ways)
I took the survey responses very seriously, and as such, rushed to make announcements of what the changes would be. I ended up announcing them the same month RICE ended - March. Proof here (that is a discord link). You can read the initial announcement there in the BentoVid server, but I ended up changing things even more, so here's the summary of what the changes ended up being:
Very strict content restrictions (slightly relaxed later)
Focus on feedback event FIRST (took out all mentions of "contest" and "best" on the website, replacing them with "event" and "most-liked" )
No cash prizes at all (previously it was a $175 pool)
More emphasis on what exactly the server culture is like and what you can expect (basically: RICE is stressful, it's full of server regulars, prepare yourself if you're new)
Permanent categories got permanent names (previously everything was able to be voted on and changed)
All winners only get one award (previously there were multiple designs and names made for each award)
We added CWs as well as VPRs into the RICE expectations
Everything possible was outlined on the website. I literally wrote out the schedule and everything that you could expect to happen, how it all worked, etc.
The fallout from 2023 RICE continued throughout the entire year. It seemed negative feelings regarding it rolled out into other issues BentoVid was having (behind the scenes, especially in the staff channels) and overall I was really not feeling great about RICE. I was seriously considering 2024 RICE being the last one I ever ran.
2023 Post-RICE survey analysis
During 2024 RICE prep (which started in October 2023), I went through the 2023 feedback again. I asked some vague questions to random people about how they felt about 2023 RICE, and their answers (most of which were not negative at all) really had me questioning my perception of the entire thing. I gave the 2023 post-RICE survey data to a friend of mine who used to analyze that kind of thing for a living (Vivafringe). I went through the answers and redacted personal information, summarizing answers if necessary, before giving it to him. As part of the analysis, I asked him a bunch of questions and he looked over all the data to answer those questions. Again, I will not share the actual data here (even anonymized), but I will share the analysis he provided. Full disclosure: Viva did participate in 2023 RICE.
Analysis of Negative Experiences
Did more people have a negative or positive time in 2023?
to answer this I didn't do any fancy analysis. I read the responses and just did a vibe check of "negative" (pretty clearly had a bad time), "neutral" (had some things they didn't like, but gave other positive feedback or just in general didn't seem like they gave a shit one way or the other), "positive" ("vars you're the best" type comments) I think "neutral" people, if you actually asked them, would say they had a positive time, but it's hard to say for sure anyway I rated 7/25 negative, 7/25 neutral, 11/25 positive notably a lot of people didn't respond to this survey and the non respondants were likely positive/neutral. So I don't think you should read those numbers and assume 28% of people had a negative experience the overwhelming complaint from basically everyone was too many videos for the time they had - 5/6 people with "negative" feedback were returnees - 2/6 of the people who wanted "competitive" contest had negative opinions. No real signal there I think
I said the complaints about the VCs were really bad though?
I count 4 people that complained about the vcs my takeaway from reading this is basically: - moderate the vcs from now on, advertise them as critique/nice/whatever (you already are doing this but just saying I agree) - if you get 76 vids again, give more time to watch stuff I don't know how you solve chat getting tense, that was another common complaint
Category drama? Context: some people were very vocal about RICE needing fixed categories like typical AMV contests
I read the category stuff and broadly classified them as wanting "fixed" cats, "unfixed" cats, or "neutral" as you might expect most people didn't give a strong opinion on it, 10/25 were neutral 5 people wanted fixed, 6 people explicitly wanted to keep things as it was now (unfixed) if you read "neutral" as support for the status quo, which I do, I think the way you're doing it is fine. especially because a lot of the fixed cat people (3/6) had negative experiences and won't be here this year
I expected a smaller turnout for 2024 RICE. All I was really hoping for were more editors than in 2022 (which only had 32). Editors in 2023: 56 Editors in 2024: 43 (+3 more if we count DQs) A 17 - 23% loss, depending on how you count this. My thoughts: 1. That's not that bad, to be honest 2. If we treat 2023 as an outlier, 2024 is an acceptable and expected amount of growth from 2022. 3. One of the main complaints in 2023 was that there were too many videos, so 2024 numbers are more desirable in this context.
Other data collected from 2023 RICE
While I was mostly concerned about the negative experiences, I thankfully had the foresight to ask some other questions about RICE that gave us some valuable data.
Kollab vs frame.io = kollab wins by landslide
Direction for rice: contest vs feedback = 15/22 say feedback
Will you make an account on a website to do rice stuff? 12/25 say no
basically everyone answered the "what does rice do differently" question with "the feedback is a lot better". So a way to make rice better is to streamline process for providing feedback.
How long people spend on RICE vids:
10/21 (of the people that responded) started working on their rice vid 1 month or longer in advance
the competitive people ("A contest where the best of the best wins") seem kind of in the middle, time wise. 3/6 spent less than 1 month, 2/6 spent 2 months exactly, 1 didn't respond.
there were 8 newcomers, but basically same conclusion. 4/8 started more than a month in advance. 3/8 took a few weeks
Google docs & PSVs RICE offers a google doc with video information instead of trying to put it all in a filename. We also offered detailed VPRs and CWs, and, in some cases, alternate versions of videos that are more friendly for photosensitive users (called PSVs).
3/25 people said they used the VPRs.
18/25 people used the infosheet
4/25 used the CWs
3/25 used PSVs
What about 2024 Post-RICE survey data?
I collected that. This blog entry is already the size of a novel so I'll put it in another entry, I guess. Stay tuned! (Don't hold your breath though) I will exit this entry with the following results from that survey: If you participated in 2023 RICE, what would you say your overall experience was? 15/18 answered overall positive 2/18 said they did not participate in 2023 1/18 said neutral 0/18 said overall negative If you participated last year (2023), would you say your experience THIS year (2024) was: 9/17 answered overall better than last year 7/17 said about the same as last year 1/17 said did not participate last year 0/17 said overall worse than last year Your overall 2024 RICE experience was: 17/18 answered positive 1/18 said neutral 0/18 said negative 0/18 said boring 2024 RICE had 43 editors and 62 videos.

That’s not true? At all? That’s highly dependent on the teacher of course, and some ABSOLUTELY do this and I can only imagine it’s gotten worse, but as a professor that’s not at all why I assigned essays?
There were two main reasons why I would assign essays in class:
1) I teach in an artistic field where the material is not objective. I was genuinely interested in fielding their thoughts on the subject matter and encouraging them to form their own opinions. It was also to make sure they had actually looked at the material or engaged with it at all. (“While working on my monologue I discovered this and this and this.”). A lot of them were reflective or asking them to form their own opinions and relationships to what was being asked of them.
2) Related to #1, but taken further. Analysis & Interpretation. This is like reflection but it’s asking you to form your own opinions and then back them up. One class I taught was centered around learning to analyze and engage with art, even art you don’t understand or like at first, which is a really important skill to develop and can only be taught by doing. I literally cannot have them practice that skill in any way that is not having them write it down and hand it in to me, because asking them to analyze and interpret on the spot is not only not fair but not giving them the chance to go through all the steps and tools I provided them with to practice this skill. In class we went over things like how to look at color, shape, size, texture etc, they learned all these terms and skills and practiced how to put them together to get at why a certain piece of art made them think or feel a certain way. That’s not something you can just.. do?
Professors, good professors anyway, assign you essays because they want you to learn something. They want you to engage with critical thinking on the subject, and that extends to fields that are not as subjective as mine! Historians are constantly interpreting, analyzing, and speculating, scientists need to analyze and synthesize information to be able to form a hypothesis, take their research and build on it. You can’t do these things without writing them down- at least not in any meaningful way that will allow other people to use them, which is how knowledge in science and other fields is created. Creating knowledge and writing it down and having discussions with each other with analyzed opinions is literally why technology and our society progresses at all. And to do it well, you need to practice it as a skill.
I’m not saying the problem you’re talking about doesn’t exist. It does. Very much so and I’m sure it’s only gotten worse as both teachers and students get more and more jaded and burnt out. But essays aren’t just arbitrarily assigned to give you something to do, or “sort students into categories.” Good professors give feedback to tell their students why they didn’t get full marks and what they can do to improve. These are based on the skills demonstrated behind the words, not the words themselves.
What I’m saying and what I think is damaging about AI is that it’s not encouraging students to engage with the skills of analyzing and explaining themselves that are going to help make them successful in their careers. Someone who can communicate and back up their points well, even if it’s not the most eloquent thing you’ve ever heard, is going to be more respected in their career than people who can’t. And the good news about this is that it IS absolutely a skill that can be taught to ANYONE at any skill level or experience, but you as the student are actually the only person who can teach it to yourself by doing it. Professors can give you tips and pointers and strategies, but unless you actually work on being able to work through facts, data, and opinions, you are not going to develop this skill. That’s what students are robbing themselves of when they use AI. I don’t get mad at them because they’re “gaming the system” or something. I get really sad, because they are robbing themselves of the opportunity to challenge themselves and grow. Which is how you get the most of the hundreds of thousands of dollars we are forced to throw into school. Going into that much debt to cultivate absolutely no skills is a complete waste and a disservice to no one but yourself. Essays are practice.
I get that students have an incredibly burdensome workload. I don’t blame you if you choose to use AI because you are just too burnt out and swamped, especially if it’s one of those classes not as relevant to your major as others, and if your professor is particularly shit. But I am on my hands and knees begging you to at least consider what you are robbing yourself of every time you use AI, and to use it responsibly. At least actively pick when you’re doing it, and ask yourself if you can afford to skip out on this round of practice or maybe you need to work on that skill to understand the material more, or get better at explaining yourself.
Also if it was just about eloquence.. AI would not help you? AI has the most dogshit basic way of describing and explaining stuff I have ever seen. If it was purely eloquence AI essays would be getting C’s and D’s nonstop. Which is again gonna be a huge disservice to you and the GPA you so desperately need to maintain.
I’m not saying there isn’t a problem. There is. But if you never engage with material in your field, and I’d say even materials that arent in your field, because it’s good to understand things outside of your immediate sphere, the only one you’re hurting is yourself.

My liberal arts education at Dickinson has given me the skills to not only succeed professionally, but to be a well rounded individual who is able to think critically and make well informed decisions, actions and statements. My time at Dickinson has taught me a number of life lessons as well, firstly, that it is okay to fail and make mistakes, it is how you react to that failure that will make either a positive or negative difference in your life. I did extremely poorly during my sophomore year as a result of mental health issues that were brought upon as a result of the pandemic. As a result I had to drop my Economics Major and focus on Computer Science, although it was difficult, I managed to catch up with my peers during my junior year and am set to graduate on time if all goes well this semester.
As a Computer Science Major, I have been able to take introductory courses that delve deep into Python and Java, two of the most versatile and useful languages. After this, we took specific upper level classes that further enriched our knowledge in various aspects of Computer Science such as Computing Abstraction, Data Structures and Algorithms and Analysis of Algorithms to name a few, although these are challenging courses, we learnt a significant amount of relevant information as a result of these courses and were able to gain a deeper understanding of Computer Science. The choices we were given to take 3 elective courses was the most memorable aspect of the major for me as I was able to realize and pursue my interest in Data Science by taking Data Mining and Database Systems.
Although all of the courses that the Computer Science Major at Dickinson entails have been beneficial to my learning process and have taught me a lot, I believe that the classes that have had the biggest impact on me have been COMP 190, 290, 491 and 492, through COMP 190 and 290 we were taught the necessary skills to make successful and meaningful contributions to humanitarian open source projects and were able to contribute to Dickinson College’s open source project, Farm Data 2, which helps support small scale organic farming operations. The Senior Seminar was a course that I was initially incredibly nervous about as it seemed to be an extremely challenging course with rigid requirements and difficult assignments, however, it has been one of my favorite Computer Science Courses, the ability to choose what Humanitarian Foss Project to work on has made the experience more meaningful as we are able to make a difference in a sector that we are passionate about. Educational Inequality is an issue that Is extremely important and the thought that our group has been able to contribute to Sugar Labs, a free learning platform for children has made us so much more passionate and involved in the process as we showed through our many meetings with the founder of the project, Walter Bender and our contributions to the project. Additionally, the in class discussions added a lot of valuable information that is vital for us to understand before we join the workforce.
Apart from Computer Science courses,  due to the broad graduation requirements that Dickinson has in place, I have been able to take intriguing classes in various fields such as Economics, History, Creative Writing, Spanish, Women and Gender Studies etc… All of which have taught me information that has allowed me to think critically regarding all aspects of life and have prepared me to be a well-rounded person in my future career. I planned to minor in Economics, however I was unable to fit the final course that I needed into my schedule for Senior Year. However, the classes that I was able to take such as Environmental Economics and Political Economy of gender have opened my eyes to many of the issues that will likely affect me and all of us in the workforce and in life.
The small classroom size has allowed me to learn how to advocate for myself and for education and has allowed me to experience extremely enriching opportunities that I would very likely not have been given had I gone to a larger school. These roles have further allowed me to become a proactive and detail oriented individual and have expanded my knowledge and outlook on life.
I have held an executive position on The Dickinsonian since my freshman year as I enjoy writing and am interested in social issues, currently I am The Web Editor and have been able to apply the frontend development skills that I have learned as a Computer Science Major. As a Helpdesk Technician at The User Services Office, I have been able to fix small scale software issues and have become accustomed to a variety of Interfaces, additionally I learnt how to use tools such as Kace and Active Directory. My experience working for CCLA as a Dialogue Facilitator has been one of the most profound experiences as we aim to incorporate dialogue and encourage individuals to listen to each other, I have been given many opportunities to apply the dialogue skills that I was taught by planning, facilitating and evaluating dialogues as well as the opportunity to meet influential figures in intimate settings such as our breakfast with Rami Khoury. Next week, I will be visiting The United Nations Headquarters in New York to attend a conference regarding The Abraham Accords. Additionally, I am the Treasurer of The Asian and Asian American Collective (AAAC) and have worked as a Community Service Aid.
All of these experiences have shaped me both as an individual and as a student. I appreciate that I have always been given choices and have been encouraged to take courses that interest me as opposed to having a rigid set of general education requirements and having to take courses that are neither relevant to my major nor interest me. This has really been the most beneficial aspect of attending a liberal arts institution. Additionally, I have greatly appreciated the wisdom that our professors have provided us based on their own experiences and opinions.

Is Your Delivery Software Intelligent?
Tumblr media
As someone who has been involved in technology my entire career, my curiosity is always drawn to new ideas, concepts, and technology. Over the last couple of years, I keep hearing more about the “Internet of Things” (IoT) and how it is impacting today’s technology solutions. I thought I would use this writing to explore how it is now offering new frontiers for software developers to enhance their products through utilization of IOT.
For those of you that are not that familiar with IOT, Wikipedia offers a decent explanation. IoT is described as a network of physical objects—“things”—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet. As the concept has evolved, other technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), real time analytics, embedded sensors, and big data mining, have become building blocks to build a new generation of solutions.
According to Fortune Business Insights, “The global IoT market size stood at 250.72 billion USD in 2019 and is projected to reach 1.4 trillion USD by 2027”. The impact has crossed a broad spectrum of industries with a few examples being consumer products, medical, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, and communication.
When NetScore first started the development of their Delivery Routing solution, they built in the standard features that allowed you to organize customer orders into delivery routes. The early edition included features such as:
Manual Route Planning
Signature capture
Viewing a map of the route plan
Re-assigning routes
Perform PO pickups
As the solution was deployed through the customer base, a common request was the ability to view the location of their trucks in real time. As the development team started exploring solutions, they realized that they could truly take the solution to the next level by incorporating IoT solutions as part of the offering. Leveraging the technology would solve tracking trucks in real time, but also extend to monitoring statistics regarding the vehicle, driver, traffic, and even sensors on the vehicle. The commitment to adding the capability to manage this type of information required revising the infrastructure of the product. While this was not a simple task, the value of enhancing the solution opened broad areas where the application could be expanded.
NetScore decided to partner with Particle who specializes in building sensors that can be leveraged by other developers to bring IoT to their solutions. They produce sensors for a wide variety of applications but offered a product line designed for the fleet management and transportation industry. Figure One shows the relationship of the Particle solution and its integration to NetScore.
Tumblr media
Delivery operations are both capital and cost intensive to maintain, so companies are always looking for means to lower their costs and increase efficiency. Optimizing routes using real time traffic information can save fuel, driver time, and help maintain delivery schedules. Sensors that monitor temperature for refrigerated trucks can warn of a possible refrigeration failure that could jeopardize a full load of product. Monitoring vehicle speeds can help management determine whether trucks are being driven safely and help reduce accidents.
The value of the information being gathered increases over time as you now can use AI and Data Analytic tools to analyze the data. This will help spot trends, allow for predictive action, and better manage your assets. You are probably thinking about where all this data can be maintained since storage can be expensive. NetScore is integrating with Google Cloud Storage to provide an affordable option for storing your data. The integration will allow for seamless management of your data with the full ability to leverage your Data Analytics and reporting tools.
As I mentioned early on, making incremental improvements to how you plan routes, deploy your delivery assets and care for your delivery fleet, will add up over time. Deploying a solution that can leverage IoT technology, AI, and Data Analytics, will result in a quick return on investment. It will also increase your customer satisfaction and build a reputation for delivering your product efficiently and effectively. For more information on how NetScore is leveraging IoT in their Delivery Routing solution, please reach out to NetScore Account Executive.

What is working/not working during my data collection
Tumblr media
Writing down everything in a notebook, so I have the exact times, what space I am using, and short bullet points of what I noticed and any key elements, is working very well for me. This is much easier for me because I am not able to open my computer every time I need to jot down data, so using the notebook helps a lot. At the end of the day, once I am no longer collecting data, I record everything from my notebook into a google doc chart, and answer the questions needed. This allows me to reflect on the data instead of writing every answer down in my notebook. This helped me a lot because a lot of mine data collection took place at work, and I'm unable to write a lot during my shift, only jot quick times, spaces and bullet points down. Honestly what was not working well was the original space I was recoding my data. I use Word for most of the assignments in this class, so I figured I would be able to use this as well. For some reason, I could not figure out how to get a chart or any sort of column to work. After a lot of failed attempts, I eventually read through some other Tumblr posts explaining their data collection and saw multiple students using Google Docs with a chart. I decided to go with this, so it is working well now but not in the beginning. The image in this post is of one of the blank charts I have for my data recordings on Wednesday.

the thing is that you pretty much steamrolled over my argument of "hey talking about young adults/teenagers who are having academic problems linked or not to chatgpt use like they're stupid pigs probably won't help your cause". you also somehow contradict yourself in your argument, and in other arguments you've had over the matter of academic quality, by saying that 52% of students who use chatgpt perform poorly on their exams, but also you say that most of these people will graduate and enter the job market. if LLMs make them fail and turn in insufficient work, doesn't that mean that they won't pass the class and won't graduate? if successful assignments can be replaced by a language model that basically only follow writing patterns and data, and hallucinates a lot of sources and information, doesn't that say more about the learning institution? how can chatgpt be both a mastermind machine but also incredibly flawed and bullshitty?
do I think students should rely on getting their information and writing on chatgpt? no. but the solution isn't going balls to the wall catastrophic and banning a technology that will probably go on the decline sooner than later (the introduction of widespread open source LLMs would reduce the influence of mega corporations in the industry). the solution I've found as a university student and a tutor is to teach students the responsable use of it, so if they decide to use it, they will know the BIG faults in a lot of chatgpt and adjacent models. teach them their impact, how it hallucinates and misunderstands a lot of prompts, the labor largely from the third world that it requires, etc. but I don't think that's what you want to do, and after a little scrolling down your blog I can tell we have very different ideological and political leanings in regards to how much impact we can have on capitalism, so I don't think any further argument will change your mind or mine, but I think you deserve at least one answer instead of me just soft blocking you
(also I kinda found your "well, maybe she has some other problems that make her behave this way, but who cares, what about her ACADEMIC QUALITY" kind of an asshole thing to say but I'm also an asshole so I'll let it pass)
Tumblr media
it's crazy how people in their late 20s are already sounding like they're 64... like if chatgpt has accelerated anything it's people's kneejerk reaction to scream about how the kids aren't doing alright
