Making business sustainable
Making business sustainable—notes on a talk by David Bent. New post at the next wave.
Jukhee Kwon, ‘Meditation’, 2022 I went recently to hear the futurist and sustainability adviser David Bent talk on ‘business policy and transformation’ at the Bartlett School in London. David worked at the Forum of the Future for a decade or so, and these days mixes up some teaching with advisory work. The slides from his talk—some of which will be threaded through here—are on his…

Queen Elizabeth's niece and nephew were seated in separate rows on opposite ends of the family section, and yet like clockwork, they simultaneously smiled as a 9 year old Page of Honour, Prince George, served their deceased mother's first nephew on such a historic day.
For some reason this scene truly warmed my heart. Perhaps it's because I was sad for them when Queen Elizabeth passed away because they lost their 2nd mother.
Sarah & David were pushed back into the 4th and 5th rows (in Sarah's case she could barely see over Prince Michael of Kent's head) and yet they expressed happiness, joy, and pride while watching their own little William's first baby boy take his place in history.
When I contrast their 4th & 5th row happiness to Harry's 3rd row pissyness, I'm yet again reminded that the Meghans are truly miserable people.

All Passion Spent: Episode 2 (1.2, BBC, 1986)
"You really must not speak as though my life has been a tragedy. I had everything that most women would envy; I had position, comfort, children, and a husband I loved. Truly loved, Mr. Fitzgeorge. I had nothing to complain of."
"Except that you were defrauded of the one thing that mattered, face it, Lady Slane: your children, your husband, your splendour... were nothing but obstacles that kept you from yourself. Perhaps you were too young to know any better, but when you chose that life, you know, you sinned against the light."
"You're right, of course."
"Course I'm right, old Fitz may be a comic figure, but he retains some sense of values."
"Don't scold me any more, Mr. Fitzgeorge. I assure you that if I did wrong, I paid for it. But you must not blame my husband."
"Oh, I don't. According to his lights, he gave you everything you could desire. He merely killed you, that's all. Men do kill women, and most women enjoy being killed - so I am told."

Virginia Woolf was apparently no great admirer of Vita's literary#efforts and it's not hard to see why; there is a gulf in style between the cerebral‚ postmodern work Woolf was producing and this rather#cozy and sweet comedy of manners with a light moral touch. but it is very charming and i do find myself enjoying my time spent with this#story. quite a sweet thing all told

1 of 2 Matthew Goode photographed by Rick McGinnis in 2008
Rick shared photos of this shoot years later when he was watching Matthew play Lord Snowden, a photographer, in 'The Crown'.
"I was primed for the return of The Crown, but having a photographer as a major character (as a bonus, Cecil Beaton appears as a minor one) couldn't help but amplify my interest. With his stygian shooting space and rich aura of charisma and rebellion - accessorized with a vintage Triumph motorcycle - Goode's Snowdon is probably the best advertisement for my trade since David Hemmings in Blow Up." "Goode is fantastic as Snowdon, a man whose immense confidence and talent blind him to the certain trauma that he's about to bring upon himself and a woman wholly incapable of enduring real pain. I photographed him almost ten years ago for the free national daily, together with Hayley Atwell..." "Goode met my camera lens with the clear gaze of a man resigned to being handsome; the intervening years have lined his face and chiseled his features even further for his turn as the seductive Snowdon. Rediscovering this shoot with a prompt from his role in The Crown only makes its perfunctory nature seem like a missed opportunity - one of many."

Kaiju Week in Review (February 19-25, 2023)
Tumblr media
Those of you who've been around here for a while may recall the Kickstarter campaign for a documentary called Kaiju Gaiden, which aimed to interview directors of underseen independent kaiju films. I stress the campaign because despite clearing its $25,000 funding goal, the documentary was never completed. Director David Hall apparently took the money and ran, and while producer Mark Jaramillo vowed to finish the film, his last update was in 2018. Jaramillo also stopped posting on his personal Facebook page the same year. Myself and pretty much everyone else who gave the project a backwards glance figured he had simply given up and withdrawn from fandom to avoid further embarrassment. Or perhaps something had happened in his personal life that was more pressing than chronicling the adventures of a wolfman and some funny lizards. Kaiju Gaiden entered the (alarmingly voluminous) annals of kaiju vaporware, alongside the likes of Godzilla Zero Hour and Colossal Kaiju Combat.
Well, something did happen in his personal life. Fucking hell, did it happen. As Jules L. Carrozza revealed last Saturday, Jaramillo was in prison until recently for distributing child pornography online. I've been in touch with someone who's looked into this horrid story beyond what's available through Google (i.e. PACER), and they've confirmed that this is no case of mistaken identity. They also shared excerpts from the sentencing report. I will spare you the vile details. Suffice to say the man is a monster of the kind I wish only existed in the movies. He had started posted on Facebook again in October like nothing had happened, and I'm extremely grateful Carrozza came forward before he could stage some triumphant return at G-Fest or another con.
I aim to have Wikizilla's Kaiju Gaiden page updated by early next week; I feel bad for taking so long, but I want our citations to be unquestionable and can't search PACER myself until Monday. I also regret not including all this in the last week in review, since it did fall under its scope, if only just. Truth be told, I didn't know how the hell to present it alongside more routine kaiju news, Godziban especially.
I also wanted to give good old @kaijusaurus time to complete his Edward Snowden act. Back at G-Fest XXIII in 2016, Jaramillo transferred to him a bunch of indie tokusatsu obscurities and asked him to keep them to himself. Well, suffice to say that promise is off, and he's deposited the lot on archive.org and (when possible) YouTube. Give them a watch and let their lo-fi simplicity remind you why you fell in love with this stuff.
I'm glad they can be out in the world. Kaiju Gaiden ultimately made many of them less visible than they could have been until now. If you couldn't make it to G-Fest, you were shit out of luck. For those of us who could, those memories are thoroughly tainted. Mark Jaramillo didn't make any of them, and they don't deserve to be associated with him. His most enduring contribution to the kaiju genre will be playing a CIA agent in the excruciating God Raiga vs. King Ohga: War of the Monsters... alongside David Hall. Good fucking riddance.

Tacit knowledge and high value work
Tacit knowledge is at the heart of high value work. Why? Because it’s complex. New post.
There was a lively discussion about the role of tacit knowledge over a couple of days at John Naughton’s daily blog recently. I’ll come back to the reason why the subject came up in a moment or so. I came quite late in life to questions of knowledge management, and my first exposure was to the work of the Japanese professors Nonaka and Takeuchi, and their ‘SECI’ model, which argues explicitly…

On a flight, reading about the FBI’s arrest of Jack Texiera, already dubbed the “Pentagon Leaker.” A quick review reveals multiple media portraits already out depicting him as a dangerous incel who shared his wares on Discord, a social media app where “racist memes” and “offensive jokes” flourish. Writes the New York Times:
Dark humor about race or ideology can eventually shape the beliefs of impressionable young people, and innocuous memes can be co-opted into symbols of hatred, researchers say.
Well, clearly we can’t have dark humor or innocuous memes! Gitmo cages for all!
The Washington Post went with “charismatic gun enthusiast”:
Tumblr media
The New York Times summarized key points in the secret defense documents, which among other things suggested “Ukrainian forces are in more dire straits than their government has acknowledged publicly.” Reading what’s out there, it’s not easy to parse what’s a legitimate intelligence concern in reaction to these leaks and what’s mere embarrassment at having been caught lying, to the public, to would-be U.S. allies the documents show we’ve been spying on, etc.
You’ll read a lot in the coming days about the dangers of apps like Discord, or of online gaming groups, which counterintelligence officials told the Washington Post today are a “magnet for spies.” The Leaker tale will also surely be framed as reason to pass the RESTRICT Act, the wet dream of creepazoid Virginia Senator Mark Warner, which would give government wide latitude to crack down on “communication technology” creating “undue or unacceptable risk” to national security.
The intelligence community has itself been massively interfering in domestic news using illegal leaks for years. Remember the “Why Did Obama Dawdle on Russia’s Hacking?” story by David Ignatius of the Washington Post in January of 2017, outing would-be Trump National Security Advisor Michael Flynn as having been captured in intercepts speaking with a Russian ambassador? That was just the first in a string of leak- or intercept-based news stories that dominated news cycles in the Trump years, involving everything from conclusions of the FISA court to supposedly secret meetings in the Seychelles.
When civilians or whistleblowers like Edward Snowden, Julian Assange (in jail for an incredible four years now), Reality Winner and now the “Discord Leaker” bring leaked information to the public, the immediate threat is Espionage Act charges and decades of jail time. When a CIA head or a top FBI official does it, it’s just news. In fact, officials talk openly about using “strategic leaks” as a P.R. staple. In a world where media currency is becoming the ultimate power, these people want a monopoly. It’s infuriating.
Watch how this thing will be spun. It’s going to get ugly fast.

Reading Tag Meme
Tagged by @grayintogreen
The last book I read:
Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R.F. Kuang. Utterly fantastic book with unrestrained critique of white supremacy, colonialism, and classism.
A book I recommend:
My absolute favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas as translated by Robin Buss for Penguin books. That edition also included very helpful footnotes since I was not intimately familiar with French history for that era. I read it during the 2 months I was preparing for the bar exam, and it kept me sane. It is very long, but very enjoyable and the best revenge story I've ever read.
A book I couldn’t put down:
Dune: Messiah by Frank Herbert. I was so hyped after reading Dune and breezed through Messiah in no time at all. Easily one of my favorites.
A book I’ve read twice (or more):
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There aren't that many books I expect to reread; I usually just feel like it on a whim. But LotR is one I have reread and will again because it's just that type of trilogy.
A book on my TBR:
So many, omg. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair has been on there for a while, I should get around to it. Eventually.
A book I’ve put down:
I cannot remember the last book I DNF'd. I've gotten very good at scrutinizing books before I buy/borrow.
That said, there is a book popular among this fandom that I almost DNF'd, but I forced myself to finish and then skimmed a second time to be sure. The more I think about it, the more I detest it. I get why other people enjoy it, and that doesn't ease my opinion.
A book on my wish list:
I don't really have a wishlist anymore because I can afford just about every book I've ever wanted. It's just a matter of remembering to buy it and getting around to reading it. That said, I want to get Persuasion by Jane Austen as annotated by David M. Shapard, and I keep forgetting to order it. I have Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility annotated by Shaphard, and it helps so much to have context on the opposite page of the one I'm reading for reference. I definitely recommend those versions for anyone who lacks sufficient social context for those books to understand what anyone's talking about.
A favorite book from childhood:
The Hobbit. I reread it every summer after the first read. I have very fond memories of reading it in the shade with a water bottle.
A book I would give to a friend:
I tend to gift nonfiction because fiction tastes vary so widely. what if? and other books by Randall Munroe have been a hit with everyone I've gifted them to.
A book of poetry or lyrics that I own:
I actually don't have a poetry book. I have folklore, fairy tales, short story anthologies, and some really old children's books from numerous cultures across multiple continents, but not poetry. I need to fix that.
A nonfiction book that I own:
About 30% of my books are nonfiction, and I have a lot of books. Epidemics and Society: From the Black Death to the Present by Frank M. Snowden was a book I picked up literally the day before COVID lockdown in 2020, and I recommend it to anyone interested in how people dealt with epidemics through the past few centuries. It helped a lot with my anxiety while isolating because it showed that this has all happened before; COVID wasn't the end times.
What I’m currently reading:
Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski. I've read it before and am refreshing because it's useful for TF&TS.
What I’m planning on reading next:
I think I'll do Seasonal Fears by Seanan McGuire next. I enjoyed Middlegame and am looking forward to the sequel.
I'll tag @captainsparklefingers, and anyone else who would like to!

All Passion Spent: Episode 3 (1.3, BBC, 1986)
"I realise that he wanted me to enjoy all his beautiful things, but what did he imagine I could do with so much money? I can't believe, Mr. Bucktrout, that he knew what he was doing when he left all this to me."
"In the eyes of the world he has conferred a great benefit on you, Lady Slane."
"I know. I know, but I never wanted anything but to stand aside. Something, it seems, that this world of ours won't allow even at the age of eighty-five."
"Well, even the smallest planet is compelled to circle round the sun."
"Yes, but does that mean that we must all, willy-nilly, circle round wealth, position, possessions? I thought that I had escaped from all those things, Mr. Bucktrout, and now Mr. Fitz... of all people... he pushes me back into the middle of them. What am I to do? What am I to do? I always preferred the works of God to the works of man, because they're given - freely - to anyone who can appreciate them, pauper or millionaire. Does that make sense?"
"It makes perfect sense."
