Bernie’s Fighting Oligarchy Tour

ICYMI: Bernie Sanders is rallying Americans in R-led and swing districts across the US. He’s inviting fellow progressive legislators like AOC and Greg Casar to speak to Americans who are seeking change. The goal? Raise funds and motivate local constituents to oust Republicans in these narrowly-won districts, give Americans hope, and build a progressive movement.

Over 100K people have attended these rallies, some of which are breaking turnout records…in a non-election year. Check it out:

Kenosha, WI: 4K attendees

Iowa City, IA: 2K attendees

Altoona, WI: 2K attendees (for context, the town’s population is 9.2K)

Warren, MI: 10K attendees

Omaha, NE: 2K attendees (130K+ live-streamed)

Las Vegas, NV: 3K attendees

Greeley, CO: 11K attendees (city’s population is 108K. This was also on a weekday)

Tempe, AZ: 15K attendees (123K+ live-streamed)

Denver, CO: 34K(!) attendees (Bernie’s largest rally ever. Again, in a non-election yr!)

Tucson, AZ: 23K attendees

There’s a palpable appetite for change. We can collectively combat oligarchy, the Trump Admin, establishment Democrats who don’t serve us.

#lord peter wimsey #mervyn bunter #so jigencore of him honestly. if lupin or peter were inside a irrevocably burning house jigen and bunter would be running #directly and determinedly into the fire to get to their personal Little Guy and that's just the way it is #with the slight distinction that I think bunter might genuinely and uncomplicatedly be *gentle gasp* straight (??? listen i KNOW)#I'm only just about to start book 3 so my opinion is by no means conclusive or comprehensive of course. but those are my vibes #you know how rarely and hesitantly I bestow the 'heterosexual' headcanon upon a beloved blorbo but I think this is one such situation #his attachment and devotion to his silly lil guy seems to come from some far deeper and less readily explicable source #than any such humdrum motives as human sexuality or romantic feeling however sincere could account for lol #it's not exactly parental but sometimes it feels like peter has two moms. his mom. and bunter who actually does most of the mom stuff lol #(or arguably also the wife stuff if we start to look uncomfortably deeply into the overlapping roles in traditional gender politics)#also wrapped up soooo much class stuff and the politics of caretaking physical AND emotional inherent in that #don't worry tho I am seeing rampant queercoding in plenty of other places lol (can we TALK about parker marrying peter's sister.#like ok king. I'm sure that means nothing. also everything about sir impey biggs. what a delight of a character I'm obsessed with him)#(one thing I really noted in clouds of witness is that denver's valet doesn't note Anything about his employer's mail or general mood #can you IMAGINE for even a second bunter not being on top of all of peter's correspondence. not attuned to his emotional state #or interested in his well-being at any moment in time. no you cannot. that is a thing that just would not happen.#I suppose denver does not have the sheer pathetic sad wet cat energy peter has that awakens the protective instinct in people lmao #I jest but I do have deeper thoughts about for all the fantasy of financial independence and freedom from worry he represents #wimsey is right from the getgo a character defined by his vulnerability and interconnectedness -- in being dependent #on the people in his life to help him manage his mental health. he is so fundamentally not a lone detective he's so deeply entrenched #in a social and societal context right from the beginning!!! he seems lonely in many ways but he NEEDS people around him #in a way and with a urgent fragility I feel is rare in the genre and with the tropes at play. and bunter #is in many ways the emotional center of that here in the early days. he keeps peter's world together more than anyone. fascinating stuff #(peter holding on to parker's trenchcoat at the end of whose body hit me so tenderly right behind the ribs my god)

I'm writing a fanfic about apocalypse gays mutated by a brain-eating sickness in a future world half-fried by solar flares, fighting a eugenics-based pseudo-military-science organization that puts children through horrific, brain-breaking, deeply traumatizing experiments......

....and I'm studying Colorado/Denver in a road atlas so I can describe the city accurately.

I'm too sleepy find my paper that delves into this but at least in Denver, Colorado the law was specifically shaped to segregate non traditional families. Up until the eighties I believe it was actually illegal live with someone who you were not 1) married to or 2) not a blood relation. The specific law was called R-0 zoning. It meant that nontraditional households were often in an awkward place, either having to live in specific zones that made police targeting easy or try and figure out how to live in areas with R-0 zoning. Some people even tried to legally adopt partners for this. My paper has a pretty strong focus on the gay rights movement in 70s Denver, but the zoning absolutely affected living situations like these. Denver was a city that was very obsessed with image and had deep historic ties with the KKK. Part of the way it enforced this predominately white nuclear family image was precisely through controlling how households like this functioned to the best of their ability. If you're curious about the actual nuances of R-0 in Denver, Erin Coles thesis on Race, Sexuality, and Single Family Zoning was pretty invaluable and goes over this far better than I did.

But overall, depending on where you lived, part of the reason you might not have had these living situations normalized is the historic laws entrenched in certain neighborhoods

it seems so strange to me that the only people it is socially acceptable to live with (once you reach a certain stage in life) are sexual partners? like why can’t i live with my best friend? why can’t i raise a child with them? why do i need to have sex with someone in order to live with them? why do we put certain relationships on a pedestal? why don’t we value non-sexual relationships enough? why do life partners always have to be sexual partners?

Lately, there has been a lot of chatter about our town not having the resources it needs. More often than not, I hear that COS doesn't have this or doesn't have that.

Honestly, it's tired rhetoric.

Our town bolsters a huge amount of outlets to learn new skills, as well as places that will happily host you to share the skills you carry. We gotta stop promoting negative language about our town without the gusto to do anything about it.

It's giving * performative*

If something is missing, then make it.

If you're finding holes in the community, then fill them.

Especially when there are folks on the ground doing that free labor already for you. Perhaps now is the time to lean into them and see how you can bolster support for their work's expansion and continued success.

Seems like a rather simple equation for community building, but that's just my two cents 💅
