Ranch Story's PC Review for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma
Hello everyone! Welcome to Ranch Story’s review for the Steam release of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma! Here we will go through the graphical settings, how the game runs on the devices I ran the game on (including the Steam Deck), My personal thoughts about the game, and finally a list of Steam features that are included for this release!
Graphical Settings
The graphical settings to the Steam release of Guardians of Azuma are extremely customizable, and I was very surprised to see the Super Resolution and Frame Generation options. I have not seen those options on previous pc versions of previous Rune Factory or Story of Season games!
Specifically, the bottom half of the Graphical Settings menu are the settings that are changed depending on what Graphical preset you use.
High Preset
* This was captured with a machine using a NVIDIA GPU. AMD GPU users will have FSR instead of DLSS.
Medium Preset
Low Preset
While playing on the medium preset on the Steam Deck, I noticed some detail pop-in specifically with the LOD of 3D models. When I was testing on other devices, I noticed it was specifically happening with the Medium and Low presets.
I found out that it was the Mesh Quality setting and turning that from medium to high disables the pop-in if that bothers you, but that may cause performance issues depending on your hardware, but for me the performance decline was not too noticeable! I will go into more detail in a later section but this game is very optimized!
Devices
Desktop: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7-Series 3700X
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
Memory: 16 GB
Operating System: Windows 10 Home
I decided that I wanted to see this game in the best possible way I could. So I used my main machine. I am very glad I did because I was amazed at everything shown! Everything impressed me; from the textures, 3D models, and even how smooth and snappy the animations were. These are amazing features in general, but it even furthered the gaming experience seeing it all come together at max graphics with no visibly noticeable slowdowns!
Steam Deck:
Model: LED 512 GB
Operating System: SteamOS
I was very happy when I tried out Guardians of Azuma on my Steam Deck. I chose to keep the settings on the default Medium and the game is just as pretty as it was on my desktop. I had no issues with Proton running this game, and there was nothing special I had to do to get the game to run. One thing I did have some issues with was during some demanding cutscenes, the game’s framerate would drop noticeably lower, but it does not happen for all cutscenes, and honestly on a handheld computer I expect these things to happen, other than the demanding cutscenes, the frame rate stays around 50~60 fps. Personally, I would not notice if I didn't have the fps overlay on while playing! Another thing I would like to say is that the battery while playing lasts 1:30~2:00 hours with the fps uncapped and/or capped at 60 fps, using the in game settings to cap at 30 fps or setting the frame limit to 40 fps using SteamOS’s performance settings. I ended up being very happy with how Steam Deck ran the game on medium plus the convenience of laying down while playing means that for the majority of my playthrough I ended up playing mostly on the Steam Deck.
Laptop:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7-Series 3750
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Memory: 8 GB
Operating System: Windows 10
I went back and forth on trying Guardians of Azuma on my laptop, but ended up trying it out for a bit and was pleasantly surprised? The laptop is slightly below the minimum requirements with the “GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER” being the minimum requirement for GPU but it was such a small difference that I might as well try it out! I noticed boot up and post load would get really laggy and models would take a second to pop up, but once things loaded the game was mostly smooth at a 40-50 but sometimes when the character was still and nothing really going on at 60 FPS. The performance was almost the same when unplugged, which I couldn't really say the same for some games previously.
General Thoughts
Alright alright, enough with the technical for now!

I could go on and on about it for quite a bit of time, but there is so much more to the game than how it runs and it deserves to be spoken about too! It’s a spin-off from the mainline Rune Factory titles, and honestly as someone who grew up with only playing Frontier and Tides of Destiny before getting into the numbered titles, it feels faithful to its preceding spin-offs. I am so happy this is the case. Spin-offs are wonderful, and I really love it when they experiment with new concepts and try new things but in such a familiar way. Farming is a bit different and can even be a bit more hands off with the town management sim part of the game, but also its bare mechanics are very familiar where you do not have to learn a whole new system just to make sure your plants grow. Another thing I really love about Guardians of Azuma is the cast of characters.
To put it straight to the point, I love how human they are. (Even the non-humans) They all have things that they love and hate, things that they are scared of, and their own personal things they have to go through. And this all affects how the social interaction choices work too, you have to think “would they actually like this topic” or “is this a place they would enjoy visiting” and each interaction could be positive or negative, depending on the character.
And if I may get a little technical again to tie things off here, I really really love that no matter which device I ran this game off of, it worked. Of course there will be limits and you should probably pay attention to the minimum requirements, but the game itself runs rock solid and the settings allow you to tweak things if you would like things to be more easy to run on your hardware. I feel like it's very important that games are able to run natively on all sorts of hardware old and new, weak or powerful in the current era of very expensive hardware, and I am glad that Marvelous thought about this when developing the game.
Fun Steam Stuff
The Steam release of Rune Factory includes various classic Steam features like
Cloud Saves
Controller Support
81 Achievements (Holy Moly 👀)
7 Badges
15 Trading Cards
Final Thoughts
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma has been a very pleasant and fun adventure, and the Steam release has been such a great experience that I can recommend with all my heart. Even with all of the unique features, I feel like with this title Rune Factory is returning to its roots and everything feels like such a nice change of pace but yet so familiar. It was my pleasure to be able to make this review, and I am excited to see what the future holds.

if one was looking at a desktop good for 1) video games 2) high res+high layer count digital art, do you have any prebuilts you would suggest? i HAVE built computers before, but back in 2013, and imo it was easier to find compatible hardware then. my current box is a lenovo prebuilt, nvidia 1660 in it, and it's fine! but it's already being outpaced by hardware demands of software. i COULD just buy a new gpu, but if it's not compatible with something i am unsure i could diagnose what caused it without a lot of faff. i did have a mobo failure due to caps exploding within a year of purchase already, so i kinda am looking in the direction of New Box over ship of theseus because it only takes one explosion event to make you dubious.
Nope, sorry, gaming computers aren't my wheelhouse and I'm not comfortable recommending a specific machine. I will say that we've purchased a few computers through NZXT that seemed decent for the price so I've pointed folks their direction in the past, but I couldn't tell you if those machines were good for games (they were good for CAD).
Perhaps someone in the notes can give a good recommendation on prebuilt gaming computers.

Story
Character Details A girl who only appears in Shibuya at night, and claims to have social anxiety disorder, but becomes talkative whenever topics related to Shichi-kun come up...
Personal Data 1 One night, when I was passing through the square outside of Shibuya station, I came across a girl being harassed by a drunk. Because I couldn't bear to see it, I stepped forward to stop this shameful man. That's how I met the girl named Runa Dogenzaka. Because she loves Shibuya, she has been working hard on volunteer activities for it. Since we both like Shibuya, I became her "Shibuya Buddy" in order to help her. We exchanged contact information and agreed to do volunteer activities together in the future.
Personal Data 2 Runa, who loves Shibuya, is very sensitive to everything that happens there. So, naturally, she also noticed that Shibuya's popularity is gradually declining. In order to restore Shibuya's popularity, Runa came up with many ideas... Finally, we found a "reliable" way to increase the popularity of Shibuya's mascot, Shichi-kun!
Personal Data 3 Only by knowing yourself and your enemy can you win every battle! Before increasing Shichi-kun's popularity, we need to understand it first. In order to investigate his popularity, we came to Akihabara. After some random street interviews, Runa was disappointed to find that Shichi-kun's popularity has gotten lower and lower... But fortunately, we found a new idea! Runa actually knows about Shichi-kun's previous actors! So, Runa and I are going to look for the previous actors who played Shichi-kun, to learn from them. I have to say, Runa really understands Shichi-kun...
Personal Data 4 The first former Shichi-kun that we went to look for was the Fifth Generation Shichi-kun. However, unexpectedly, Fifth Gen is now a drunkard... and as expected, Runa got caught up in his antics. He was very disdainful of his experience playing Shichi-kun... and seeing what Fifth Gen had become, Runa started to cry. But to my surprise, when Fifth Gen saw Runa crying, he also started to cry... I had no choice but to act as the "adult" and comfort the two of them. Fortunately, the two successfully opened their hearts through their tears, and Runa learned information about another "ex-Shichi-kun" through him.
Personal Data 5 Through Fifth Gen, we learned that the Third Generation Shichi-kun was active in Zoshigaya. In order to learn from Third Gen, Runa and I headed to Zoshigaya. Fortunately, this time, Third Gen was a very friendly woman. She was very happy to meet Runa. Seeing Runa, who loves Shibuya, Third Gen generously taught her the Third Generation Shichi-kun's signature moves. But... why'd I have to learn them, too?
Personal Data 6 Runa said that she taught Shichi-kun the moves she learned from the Third Gen. But I don't know what went wrong. Shichi-kun performed the moves of the Third Gen very... strangely, even scaring the children to tears. Runa was extremely anxious about this... but unexpectedly, these strange moves had an unforeseen effect. Someone filmed a funny video of Shichi-kun's movements and uploaded it to the internet. Then, some people actually came to Shibuya out of curiosity about Shichi-kun... Although it's a bit unbelievable, Shichi-kun's popularity has finally increased... I have to correct Shichi-kun's moves before more people come! But... why do I have to be the one to correct his moves?
Personal Data 7 Just when we thought everything was going smoothly, a big crisis suddenly occurred! A fake Shichi-kun named George appeared in Kichijoji, and spread the word that the Shichi-kun in Shibuya is the knockoff one. This is a huge blow to Shichi-kun's reputation! In order to defend his reputation, Runa and I rushed to Kichijoji and found this counterfeit. But Runa didn't expect that the knockoff wouldn't care about her callout at all... and what made Runa even more sad was that everyone seemed to like this cheap knockoff "fake Shichi-kun" more... Runa was confused; what kind of Shichi-kun does everyone like?
Personal Data 8 Runa seemed troubled today... In order to comfort her, we went to the diner. After hesitating, Runa told me her discovery: it turns out that George of Kichijoji's true identity is the First Generation Shichi-kun... The First Gen seems to be Runa's spiritual mentor. Seeing the First Generation Shichi-kun become what he is today... Runa fell into uncertainty. Maybe... I can do something to help Runa?
Personal Data 9 Sure enough, in Mementos, I found the First Generation Shichi-kun's Shadow, and also learned the story behind Shichi-kun... After successfully changing his heart, the First Gen gave up on playing George, and returned to Shibuya to apologize to Shichi-kun and Runa. Seeing the First Gen repent, Runa smiled again.
Personal Data 10 What is really important? After experiencing all this, Runa seemed to understand what she really cares about most: Shichi-kun is important, but Shibuya is more important. For the sake of her beloved Shibuya, she decided not to rely on raising Shichi-kun's popularity anymore, but to actually do what she can to make Shibuya a better place. Maybe this is a long and difficult road, but it doesn't matter, as her Shibuya Buddy will move forward with her. I think Shichi-kun will understand too, right? Woof woof awoo~!
Voice Lines

(As I can only add up to ten audio files per post, I’ll only include the Japanese lines below! Feel free to ask for the Chinese ones, though.)
I'm Runa Dogenzaka. Nice to meet you!
About me, huh? I LOOOVE Shibuya! Also, I love Shichi-kun too! That's why I love that Shibuya has Shichi-kun in it! ... Huh? That's not what you were asking?
Lately, for some reason, I feel like Shibuya isn't as lively as it was before... I want Shibuya to be the liveliest ward in Tokyo! That's my greatest wish.
Shibuya is actually a neighborhood with a lot of history! Its name alone has various origins, full of lots of interesting anecdotes! And the Shibuya of today is also really good, right? It's thriving, and the center of fashion! ... Aaah! I talked way too much again, didn't I... I'm sorry!
I'm chatty when I'm with you, right? But normally, I'm completely different... I'm bad at meeting people's eyes, so I grew my bangs out like this. But it was easy to talk to you right from the start! Besides Shichi-kun, this is the first time I've met someone like that.
When you talk about Shichi-kun, you think of Shibuya! And when you talk about Shibuya, you think of Shichi-kun! He's the symbol of Shibuya, and a super cute mascot! For eternity!
There's nothing bad about picking up trash, right? That's why I started with that, as my first step in order to improve Shibuya! You could call it a grassroots activity.

Find the word tag
Today finds me with a much appreciated quiet day -- I did laundry and ate soup and pasta and did some digital art too, how nice!
@willtheweaver tagged me a long time ago to search for the words mystery, rest, breeze, and dance -- thank you! Let's see what I can do...
Mystery:
Why on earth had she let any of these idiots know of her existence? Why hadn’t she just kept her large mouth shut and trailed Antonio until he led her to the plans for the mystery machine that could take away her Gift once and for all and stolen them and vanished into the mist forever?
Rest:
There was the sound of hands patting the roof beside her, and then Paris found her, and knelt to scoop her up. How he planned to climb down a tiny ladder while dragging her along, she didn’t know, and she needed at least five more minutes of rest before she could care. “She might need medical attention,” Paris said from far away. “How could she possibly receive it?” Lewis pointed out. “If the doctor can’t see her?”
Breeze:
Giving up after a while, Velia went back to Antonio’s room. She debated the merits of knocking. A sound where there should be none could be worrying, but there was a lack of breeze in the corridor that could feasibly be the reason for the door opening by itself. Then again, Antonio could possibly be in a state of undress, should she barge in on him. And now that he could see her, he’d be horrified if she wandered in unannounced.
Dance:
Velia moved behind the desk to read the letter half typed up in the typewriter. Then she shifted through the stacks of papers on the desktop. The doorhandle twisted. Velia danced backwards, crowding into the corner of the room by the window. The door opened and the conductor stepped in, taking his cap off and rubbing at his eyes beneath his spectacles before sitting down at the desk with a squeak from the rolling chair.
@late-to-the-fandom @chauceryfairytales @winterandwords @revenantlore @did-i-do-this-write and anyone else who sees this and wants to search for the words shower, oblivion, spat, and over, go for it!

Things do not become cheaper just because a group of people demand it be so.
It's a very disgusting, mafioso mentality. Where if you just arbitrarily demand a thing be cheap and draw funds from the public treasury to afford it by demanding it be that accessible, you suck profit out of the rest of the system.
What makes something affordable isn't a group of people getting together to mandate it be so under penalty of force or systemic change, it's A.) a process existing that more cheaply and efficiently acquires a thing. B.) Discovering it from not knowing it. C.) Putting it to use.
You can say, "I want everybody in my empire to have steel swords," all you want. But unless your means of mining steel from underground move enough earth for that to happen, you're just forcing the all to cover that. And I guess if your intention is to force the state to do that, okay, then that's the intention to ignore reality by forcing everybody else to provide thing at their expense. Not making a thing cheaper.
If you want cheaper healthcare, you need the overhead to participate in the pharmacological industry cheaper. You need engineers to utilize the latest in nanotechnology and solid state chips and machines for the smallest, cheapest doodads that do the most things in one package. You need carbon based chips that do things into the terahertz range for imaging and software to interpret it.
Once you have those things, where a T-ray or hyper fidelity ultrasound costs about as much as a desktop computer, and complex medicinal compounds can be produced by enzymes and proteins and yeasts to make medicine from equipment that doesn't cost billions of dollars in order to be profitable, that would mean healthcare costs could shrink.
If you want cheap products, find a way to make them out of literal dirt beneath your feet with as few steps as possible, and as many people making them as possible. Arbitrary caps are a tyrant's errand.

my first introduction to supply chains came from World War Z (yes the zombie book) and the problems the government logistics guy had with trying to procure supplies from within national borders after every national government essentially bunkered down and international trade ceased to be. one quote stands out:
Ingredients:
molasses from the United States
anise from Spain
licorice from France
vanilla (bourbon) from Madagascar
cinnamon from Sri Lanka
cloves from Indonesia
wintergreen from China
pimento berry oil from Jamaica
balsam oil from Peru
And that’s just for a bottle of peacetime root beer. We’re not even talking about something like a desktop PC, or a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
maybe it just stood out to me because I'm a sucker for root beer, but that doesn't even cover the glass for the bottle, the ink and paper for the label, the metal for the bottle cap, or the materials to build and maintain the machines at the various assembly factories.
watch PearlMania500's response, that guy gets supply chain. I work in supply chain and that is exactly what everyone should be thinking about
But no, most people don't even know how their food gets to the grocery store

A Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Sublimation Printing Business
The world of customized merchandise is booming, and one of the leading technologies driving this trend is sublimation printing. If you’ve ever thought about starting your own business in this industry, now is an excellent time to consider it. A sublimation printer opens the door to a wide range of possibilities for producing high-quality, personalized products. In this guide, you’ll learn how sublimation printers work, what you need to get started, and tips to build a successful business from scratch.
What is Sublimation Printing?
Sublimation printing is a process where heat and pressure are used to transfer dye onto materials such as fabrics, ceramics, and metals. It involves printing a design onto special sublimation transfer paper using sublimation ink and then applying heat to bond the ink with the surface of the product. The result is a vibrant, long-lasting image that won’t peel, fade, or crack over time. This technique is especially effective on polyester fabrics and items coated with a polymer layer, making it popular for printing on T-shirts, mugs, and promotional items.
Why Sublimation Printing is a Great Business Idea?
The demand for custom merchandise is steadily growing as people seek unique ways to express themselves through personalized products. Businesses and individuals alike are looking for one-of-a-kind items for events, marketing campaigns, and gifts. Sublimation printing offers an affordable, efficient way to produce customized items without the need for large minimum orders or expensive setup fees. Additionally, the process allows for full-color, high-definition prints, making it ideal for designs with photographs or complex artwork.
Equipment You’ll Need to Get Started
Starting a sublimation printing business requires a few essential pieces of equipment. The most important tool is a sublimation printer, which is specifically designed to handle sublimation inks. These printers range from compact desktop models to larger, commercial-grade machines. Next, you’ll need sublimation transfer paper, which holds the printed design before it’s transferred onto the final product. A heat press machine is also necessary, as it applies the heat and pressure needed to transfer the image. Depending on the products you plan to offer, you may require specialty presses like mug presses or cap presses. Lastly, you’ll need sublimation blanks, which are the items you’ll be printing on. These can include T-shirts, phone cases, drinkware, photo panels, and more.
How to Choose the Right Sublimation Printer?
Selecting the right sublimation printer for your business depends on the types of products you want to offer and the volume of orders you expect to handle. If you’re starting small, a desktop sublimation printer is a cost-effective option. These models are compact and perfect for items like shirts, mugs, and small accessories. For businesses planning to handle larger orders or wide-format items such as banners and blankets, a wide-format sublimation printer is a better choice. These machines offer greater print width and higher output capacity.
Common Products You Can Make with Sublimation Printing
The versatility of sublimation printing means you can create a wide variety of customized products. Apparel items such as T-shirts, sports jerseys, and face masks are always in demand. Drinkware like coffee mugs, water bottles, and tumblers are popular choices for both personal and promotional use. Home décor items including pillowcases, photo panels, and wall art also make excellent additions to a product line. In addition, businesses often seek custom mouse pads, keychains, and phone cases for marketing giveaways or branded merchandise.
Tips for Creating High-Quality Sublimation Prints
To produce professional-looking sublimation prints, it’s important to pay attention to a few key factors. First, ensure you use high-quality sublimation ink and transfer paper. Low-quality materials can result in dull, faded prints. Second, calibrate your sublimation printer regularly to maintain color accuracy and print sharpness. Third, always follow the recommended temperature, pressure, and time settings for your heat press machine to ensure a proper transfer. Lastly, choose products with a high polyester content or polymer coating, as these materials hold sublimation dyes better than natural fabrics.
Marketing Your Sublimation Printing Business
Once you’ve set up your sublimation printing business, the next step is reaching potential customers. Building an online presence is essential. Create a website or an online store using platforms like Shopify, Etsy, or social media pages. Use high-quality images to showcase your products and highlight their customization options. Offer special promotions or discounts for first-time buyers to attract attention. Participating in local markets, craft fairs, and business expos can also help introduce your products to new audiences. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and share photos of their orders to build trust and credibility.
Managing Orders and Customer Service
Providing excellent customer service is vital for any business, especially in the customized products market. Make sure your ordering process is straightforward and clearly communicates order timelines, design approval steps, and shipping details. Offer customers the ability to preview their designs before finalizing orders. Respond promptly to inquiries and resolve any issues quickly to build a positive reputation. Keeping track of orders, inventory, and expenses using business management software will help you stay organized and maintain efficiency as your business grows.
Overcoming Common Challenges in Sublimation Printing
While sublimation printing is a rewarding business, it does come with a few challenges. Color inconsistencies can occur when designs are transferred to different materials. Using ICC color profiles and regularly maintaining your equipment can help minimize this issue. Ink clogs in the printer’s nozzles are another common problem, particularly if the printer sits idle for long periods. Regular cleaning and consistent use can prevent clogs and maintain print quality. Additionally, managing inventory of sublimation blanks and handling high-volume orders during busy seasons requires careful planning and organization.
Conclusion
Starting a sublimation printing business is an exciting opportunity for creative entrepreneurs looking to tap into the growing market for customized products. With a sublimation printer, heat press, and the right materials, you can produce vibrant, durable designs on a wide variety of products. By focusing on quality, marketing effectively, and delivering excellent customer service, you can build a successful business that stands out in the competitive custom product industry. Whether you’re making personalized gifts, promotional items, or fashionable apparel, sublimation printing provides the tools to bring unique ideas to life.

TL;DR - the 1897 novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker wasn't just vampire horror, it was also a techno-thriller.
*****
Excuse me, did I just see diaries dismissed as too up-to-date and modern for the atmosphere of "Dracula"?
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) kept a famous diary from 1660-69 and would like to have a word with someone about that.
*****
"Dracula" was first published in 1897, and Bram Stoker had been researching it since about 1890 (he had Other Things To Do) so for my own amusement I went looking for the sort of Excessive Modern Technology that "The Spectator" criticised.
*****
Mina Harker (née Murray) can write in shorthand, which at that time was usually done in pencil. Stenography fountain pens were also popular (Jonathan Harker uses one) but faded away, while steno pencils are still sold to this day.
I have been working very hard lately, because I want to keep up with Jonathan’s studies, and I have been practising shorthand very assiduously. When we are married I shall be able to be useful to Jonathan, and if I can stenograph well enough I can take down what he wants to say in this way and write it out for him on the typewriter, at which also I am practising very hard. He and I sometimes write letters in shorthand, and he is keeping a stenographic journal of his travels abroad.
She uses two typewriters in the course of the book. The one in England mentioned above and in subsequent chapters is probably a desktop model, perhaps an Underwood or Remington suitable for a solicitor's office...

However, as played by Winona Ryder in the film "Bram Stoker's Dracula", she uses a smaller Oliver...

...whose design, deliberately or by accident, seems to echo Gary Oldman's Dracula hair.

Mina specifically describes the other machine like this:
"I feel so grateful to the man who invented the “Traveller’s” typewriter, and to Mr. Morris for getting this one for me."
This suggests it's a much smaller and lighter portable, probably with a carrying-case; maybe a Blickensderfer like one of these...

...whose ads emphasised its travel utility.

*****
Jonathan Harker keeps his journal in shorthand, and says so:
"Here I am, sitting at a little oak table where in old times possibly some fair lady sat to pen, with much thought and many blushes, her ill-spelt love-letter, and writing in my diary in shorthand all that has happened since I closed it last."
And he's using a pen not a pencil, because he also says so:
"When I had written in my diary and had fortunately replaced the book and pen in my pocket I felt sleepy."
He can't have done that with a regular dip pen and inkwell, so he's carrying something with an internal ink supply and a cap against leaks - in other words, a fountain pen, only finalised in its modern form in 1884.
Whether Harker's had a proper steno nib for shorthand (or whether such nibs had even been invented yet) I don't know, but the pen itself would have been something like this Swan by Mabie Todd, which he'd have filled from a bottle using an eyedropper (modern Opus 88 pens use this filling system even now):

...or maybe a Wirt fountain pen (filled the same way) as praised by Mark Twain:

*****
Finally, Dr Seward's phonograph recorder was probably an Edison like this one...

...powered by a large lead-acid battery of the kind now found in cars. The one pictured has a small close-to-the-mouth "confidential" speaking horn and pneumatic (air-transmission) earphones, appropriate to a doctor using it for confidential patient information.

It made recordings on wax-covered cylinders which could be erased for re-use by shaving off the engraved wax.

"He (Dr Seward) stood up and opened a large drawer, in which were arranged in order a number of hollow cylinders of metal covered with dark wax... I (Mina) took the cover off my typewriter, and said to Dr. Seward: “Let me write this all out now...” He accordingly set the phonograph at a slow pace, and I began to typewrite from the beginning of the seventh cylinder..."

So "Dracula" is a novel whose plot development depends in several places on state-of-the-art contemporary tech.
That sounds like a "techno-thriller" to me... :->
The Spectator [19th century British magazine] thought that while Stoker made admirable use of “vampirology,” the story might have been better had it been set in an earlier period. “The up-to-dateness of the book—the phonograph, diaries, typewriters, and so on—hardly fits in with the mediaeval methods which ultimately secure the victory for Count Dracula’s foes.”
On the subject that contemporaries thought that Dracula was too up-to-date for a vampire story.

Demystifying Screen Readers: Accessible Forms & Best Practices

Demystifying Screen Readers: Accessible Forms & Best Practices
This is the 3rd post in a small series we are doing on form accessibility. If you missed the 2nd post, check out Managing User Focus with :focus-visible. In this post we are going to look at using a screen reader when navigating a form, and also some best practices.
What is a Screen Reader?
You may have heard the term “screen reader” as you have been moving around the web. You might even be using a screen reader at this moment to run manual accessibility tests on the experiences you are building. A screen reader is a type of AT or assistive technology.
A screen reader converts digital text into synthesized speech or Braille output, commonly seen with a Braille reader.
In this example, I will be using Mac VO. Mac VO (VoiceOver) is built-in to all Mac devices; iOS, iPadOS, and macOS systems. Depending on the type of device you are running macOS on, opening VO could differ. The Macbook Pro that is running VO I am writing this on doesn’t have the touch bar, so I will be using the shortcut keys according to the hardware.
Spinning Up VO on macOS
If you are using an updated Macbook Pro, the keyboard on your machine will look something like the image below.
You will start by holding down the cmd key and then pressing the Touch ID three times quickly.
If you are on a MBP (MacBook Pro) with a TouchBar, you will use the shortcut cmd+fn+f5 to turn on VO. If you are using a traditional keyboard with your desktop or laptop, the keys should be the same or you will have to toggle VO on in the Accessibility settings.. Once VO is turned on, you will be greeted with this dialog along with a vocalized introduction to VO.
If you click the “Use VoiceOver” button you are well on your way to using VO to test your websites and apps. One thing to keep in mind is that VO is optimized for use with Safari. That being said, make sure when you are running your screen reader test that Safari is the browser you are using. That goes for the iPhone and iPad as well.
There are two main ways you can use VO from the start. The way I personally use it is by navigating to a website and using a combination of the tab, control, option, shift and arrow keys, I can navigate through the experience efficiently with these keys alone.
Another common way to navigate the experience is by using the VoiceOver Rotor. The Rotor is a feature designed to navigate directly to where you want to be in the experience. By using the Rotor, you eliminate having to traverse through the whole site, think of it as a “Choose Your Own Adventure”.
Modifier Keys
Modifier keys are the way you use the different features in VO. The default modifier key or VO is control + option but you can change it to caps lock or choose both options to use interchangeably.
Using the Rotor
In order to use the Rotor you have to use a combination of your modifier key(s) and the letter “U”. For me, my modifier key is caps lock. I press caps lock + U and the Rotor spins up for me. Once the Rotor comes up I can navigate to any part of the experience that I want using the left and right arrows.
youtube
Using the Rotor in VoiceOver
Navigating By Heading Level
Another neat way to navigate the experience is by heading level. If you use the combination of your modifier keys + cmd + H you can traverse the document structure based on heading levels. You can also move back up the document by pressing shift in the sequence like so, modifier keys + shift + cmd + H.

History & Best Practices
Forms are one of the most powerful native elements we have in HTML. Whether you are searching for something on a page, submitting a form to purchase something or submit a survey. Forms are a cornerstone of the web, and were a catalyst that introduced interactivity to our experiences.
The history of the web form dates back to September 1995 when it was introduced in the HTML 2.0 spec. Some say the good ole days of the web, at least I say that. Stephanie Stimac wrote an awesome article on Smashing Magazine titled, “Standardizing Select And Beyond: The Past, Present And Future Of Native HTML Form Controls”.
The following are 5 best practices to follow when building an accessible form for the web.
Make sure that you are using a form element. Forms are accessible by default and should be used over div’s at all times.
<form> <!-- Form controls are nested here. --> </form>
Be sure to use the for and id attributes on label’s and input’s so that they are linked. This way, if you click/tap the label, focus will shift to the input and you can start typing.
<label for="name">Name:</label> <input type="text" id="name" name="name" required aria-required/>
If a field is required in order for the form to be complete, use the required attribute and the aria-required attribute. These will restrict the form from being submitted. The aria-required attribute explicitly tells the assistive tech that the field is required.
<input type="text" id="name" name="name" required aria-required/>
Use the, :focus, :focus-within and :focus-visible CSS pseudo classes to manage and customize how a user receives focus.
form:focus-within background-color: #cfffcf; input:focus-within border: 10px solid #000000; input:focus-visible, select:focus-visible, textarea:focus-visible outline: 2px solid crimson; border-radius: 3px;
A button is used to invoke an action, like submitting a form. Use it! Don’t create buttons using div’s. A div by definition is a divider. It has no inherent accessibility properties.

NVDA
NVDA is a screen reader from NV Access. It is currently only supported on PC’s running Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 and later. For more access, check out the NVDA version 2024.1 download page on the NV Access website!
JAWS
“We need a better screen reader”
– Anonymous
If you understood the reference above, you are in good company. According to the JAWS website, this is what it is in a nutshell:
“JAWS, Job Access With Speech, is the world’s most popular screen reader, developed for computer users whose vision loss prevents them from seeing screen content or navigating with a mouse. JAWS provides speech and Braille output for the most popular computer applications on your PC. You will be able to navigate the Internet, write a document, read an email and create presentations from your office, remote desktop, or from home.”
JAWS website
Check out JAWS for yourself and if that solution fits your needs, definitely give it a shot!
Narrator
Narrator is a built-in screen reader solution that ships with WIndows 11. If you choose to use this as your screen reader of choice, the link below is for support documentation on its usage.
Complete guide to Narrator
Orca
Orca is a screen reader that can be used on different Linux distributions running GNOME.
“Orca is a free, open source, flexible, and extensible screen reader that provides access to the graphical desktop via speech and refreshable braille.
Orca works with applications and toolkits that support the Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface (AT-SPI), which is the primary assistive technology infrastructure for Linux and Solaris. Applications and toolkits supporting the AT-SPI include the GNOME Gtk+ toolkit, the Java platform’s Swing toolkit, LibreOffice, Gecko, and WebKitGtk. AT-SPI support for the KDE Qt toolkit is being pursued.”
Orca Website
TalkBack
Google TalkBack is the screen reader that is used on Android devices. For more information on turning it on and using it, check out this article on the Android Accessibility Support Site.
Browser Support
If you are looking for actual browser support for HTML elements and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Application) attributes, I suggest caniuse.com for HTML and Accessibility Support for ARIA to get the latest 4-1-1 on browser support. Remember, if the browser doesn’t support the tech, chances are the screen reader won’t either.
DigitalA11Y can help summarize browser and screen reader info with their article, Screen Readers and Browsers! Which is the Best Combination for Accessibility Testing?

Humanity finds a way to ruin the moon and the cruelty of autonomous weapons
Week in Review: Oct 30th - Nov 5th
Welcome back! I'm slightly late this week, but happy to make it happen two weeks in a row.
Enjoy, and handle with care.

Technology
The AI Market is Firming Up Fast: Dbreunig.com; Drew Breunig
The AI market is becoming more competitive and challenging for new entrants as the requirements for building foundational AI models increase.
Breunig suggests that the AI market might be locked up by a few dominant players in a matter of months.
Note: Depending on whom you listen to, the recent wave of regulatory moves concerning AI may also be a big win for the early big-AI companies. The big companies can employ their armies of lawyers and compliance personnel to navigate regulatory hurdles in a way that smaller companies cannot.
India's lunar landing made a mess on the Moon – The Register; Laura Dobberstein
India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission, which landed on the Moon in August 2023, ejected and displaced over two tons of lunar dust in an area of over 100 square meters around the landing site.
The article notes that the dust disturbance could have implications for future lunar exploration and colonization, as it could affect the visibility, thermal environment, and surface chemistry of the moon.
Note: Who’s going to write this sci-fi novel: Humans turn the moon into a permanent dust cyclone in our attempts to exploit it?
NIST announces AI consortium to shape US policies – AI News; Ryan Daws
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has formed a new consortium to support the development of innovative methods for evaluating AI systems and improving their safety and trustworthiness.
The consortium is part of the new U.S. AI Safety Institute, which is a response to the recent executive order on AI.
Autonomous weapons are the moral choice – Atlantic Council; Thomas X. Hammes
Hammes argues that it is morally imperative for the United States and other democratic nations to develop, field, and use autonomous weapons, as they offer advantages in speed, efficiency, and accuracy over human-operated weapons.
Hammes refutes the arguments of the anti-autonomy coalition, which claims that autonomous weapons are immoral, unaccountable, and violate human dignity, by providing counterexamples and evidence from military ethics and law.
Note: What horseshit. Willfully ignorant of the reality that war is rarely between similarly equipped nation states anymore. How much more willing will states be to use military means to try to force obedience from disenfranchised peoples or weaker countries when they can tell their population only the ‘other’ will have to die? Appalling.
What next for Apple Silicon on Macs? – COMPUTERWORLD; Jonny Evans
Note: What will the computing landscape be like in 5 years with everything increasingly turning to ARM? Will Windows-powered machines with Qualcomm’s desktop chips see the same performance per watt as Apple's? What happens if Apple starts cranking up the TDP on the M-series to compete? I can’t wait to find out.
The future of AI hardware: Scientists unveil all-analog photoelectronic chip – Tech Xplore; Tejasir Gururaj
Researchers from Tsinghua University, China, have developed an all-analog photoelectronic chip that combines optical and electronic computing to achieve ultrafast and highly energy-efficient computer vision processing, surpassing digital processors.
The chip uses a diffractive neural network to extract information from high-resolution light fields.
Chip would be relevant for tasks such as facial recognition, object detection, and image segmentation, and could enable new applications in biometrics, security, and augmented reality.
The Solar-Panel Backlash Is Here – The Atlantic; Andrew Moseman
Some states are discouraging the use of solar panels, despite the growing demand and supply of clean energy in the country.
California and Florida have imposed fees, taxes, or caps on solar customers, or reduced the compensation they receive for sending excess power back to the grid, making solar panels less affordable and attractive.
These policies are driven by the interests of utility companies, which fear losing revenue and control over the power market, and by the challenges of integrating solar power into the existing grid infrastructure, which is not designed to handle variable and distributed energy sources.
Note: It’s almost like…monopolies don’t care what their customers or the government wants?
Microsoft is improving its Xbox app for Windows handheld gaming PCs – The Verge; Tom Warren
Microsoft has started testing new updates to its Xbox app on Windows 11 that improve the experience on handheld devices and smaller screens, such as the Asus ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go.
Note: My heart wants this form factor to be a thing. But history shows all: Windows mobile, windows touch for tablets (and Win 8?), whatever we’re calling Surface Duo… This must also fail.

The Landlord Tech Company That Turned Security Deposits Into a Monthly Fee – Motherboard; Matthew Gault
Rhino is a startup that offers to replace security deposits with monthly fees for renters, but also charges them more than they would get back from their landlords. It uses algorithms to determine the fees, which are based on factors such as credit score, income, and location, resulting in discrimination and inequality among renters.
Rhino is difficult to contact and cancel, and that it has partnered with landlords and lawmakers to make its service mandatory or preferred in some states, limiting renters’ choices and rights.
Note: Just gross. Stop it.
The Supreme Court seems stumped by two cases about free speech online – Vox; Ian Millhiser
Two cases are currently before the Supreme Court, O’Connor-Ratcliff v. Garnier and Lindke v. Freed, which involve government officials blocking constituents on social media platforms.
The cases raise questions about whether these platforms are public forums subject to the First Amendment, and whether the officials are acting in their official or personal capacities when they use them.
Justices are confused and divided on how to apply existing doctrines and precedents to the online context, and that they may avoid issuing a clear and comprehensive ruling on the issue.

Somebody Just Killed the Mozi Botnet - Dark Reading; Nate Nelson
The Mozi botnet, which infected Internet of Things devices and enabled distributed denial-of-service attacks and data exfiltration, was deactivated by a kill switch update in August 2023.
Nelson speculates that the update was either distributed by the original authors of the botnet or by the Chinese law enforcement, who arrested them in 2021.
The demise of the Mozi botnet could reduce the threat to the privacy and security of IoT device owners, but other botnets could emerge to fill the gap.
'Scarred Manticore' Unleashes the Most Advanced Iranian Cyber Espionage Yet – Dark Reading; Nate Nelson
Iranian state-sponsored threat actor Scarred Manticore has been spying on high-value organizations across the Middle East for at least a year, using a stealthy and customizable malware framework called Liontail.
Liontail uses memory-resident shellcode payloads and exploits undocumented functionalities of the HTTP.sys driver to evade detection and extract data from compromised Windows servers.
Scarred Manticore represents a significant improvement in Iran’s cyber capabilities.
Iran's MuddyWater Targets Israel in New Spear-Phishing Cyber Campaign – The Hacker News; Newsroom
Iranian nation-state actor MuddyWater has been linked to a new spear-phishing campaign targeting two Israeli entities to deploy a RAT.
MuddyWater uses a new file-sharing service called Storyblok to deliver a ZIP archive containing a malicious LNK file and an executable file that install the remote administration tool and displays a decoy document.
MuddyWater has been previously associated with destructive attacks against the Albanian government.
Boeing Breached by Ransomware, LockBit Gang Claims – Dark Reading; Becky Bracken
The LockBit ransomware gang claims to have breached Boeing and threatened to publish sensitive data
Boeing officials confirmed that the attackers had targeted some of its information systems, but claimed the breach did not affect flight safety.
UAE Bolsters Cyber Future With US Treasury Partnership, Collaborations Dark Reading; Dan Raywood
UAE’s Cybersecurity Council has agreed to several partnerships to enhance its threat intelligence sharing and cybersecurity capabilities, including with the US Treasury Department, South Korea, and Rwanda.
The partnership with the US aims to share information on threats and incidents affecting the financial services industry
Note: When will we learn to stop partnering with these piranhas on the peninsula? Every collaboration with the UAE is used to justify to US talent that it is cosher to go work in the UAE and help track down dissidents and collect on US citizens.
SEC Charges Against SolarWinds CISO Send Shockwaves Through Security Ranks Dark Reading; Becky Bracken
The SEC charged SolarWinds and its chief information security officer with fraud and internal control failures relating to the 2020 supply chain cyberattack on the company’s Orion Platform.
