not an uncommon idea to come across but I'm so fascinated by how much about this view of ancient history/culture/myth tradition is unintentionally & straightforwardly revealed by the phrase "and therefore the origin" here -- not just the assumption that these things exist in a strictly linear progression ("greece" exists then "rome" exists) where "greece" and "rome" are the only players (where does pre roman italy fit into this worldview? what room is there here for the influence of ancient north africa and west asia on greece? these places are effectively erased off the map), but the idea of greece as an "origin" of "art and mythology", that in greece it somehow developed whole cloth & completely undiluted by the sort of "cultural borrowing" they perceive the romans are doing. I always find this sort of view of greece as contextless & devoid of movement and trade until it comes time to pass the things they've apparently independently invented on to rome (or have it stolen as some would see it) frustrating, as well as the view of rome as a sort of copy pasted greece with no other influence or separate or preexisting traditions, really frustrating & honestly occasionally kind of sinister tbh
#some connection im my mind tbh btw the athenian obsession w autochthony & the way modern people see mythology civilization philosophy etc as#just essentially coming wholly formed out of the place of greece itself. but idk i don't have enough expertise to really develop this one#thoughts#sorry for essentially making this same post for the millionth time also it's just that everyday i see new people expressing this assumption

you should talk about your thoughts on rw fanon (looking with huge eyes)
Oh god, there's a lot of major misconceptions have concreted into fanon, mostly around ancient society and ascension.
First things first! Ascension is not death! They are entirely separate things treated entirely separately by the text of the game. I can see where the interpretation is coming from, but it doesn't really align with how the text treats either subject. Five Pebbles may want to remove the self destruction taboo, but from his reaction to the rot it's clear that he doesn't want to die. Conflation of ascension and death only comes up as an offhand possibility that pebbs makes on iterator 4chan, when he's going into the possibilities of scenarios that even the other sliverists are doubtful of! (let me make clear that I am not a sliverist by any means)
Ascension is more of talked about as a form of transcendence, yeah? A Bell, Eighteen Amber Beads talks about their sitution as being "To have grasped at the boundless infinites of the cosmic void…", not as them seeking an end to life.
The beta dialogue goes into more detail, mentioning the "infinities of time and space" and the "boundless fractal planes of spirit and reality...", though this dialogue was cut and it's hard to tell how much it reflects the concept as in the released game.
As for the cultural misconceptions... there's A Lot to talk about, but the first that comes to mind is the common conflation of the five natural urges and the christian concept of sin.
It is true that the negation of urges is mentioned by moon as an alternative method of ascension, but much of what we know about the culture of the people who the fandom calls the ancients (which makes discussion of the depths a mess but that's something for another post entirely) points towards the urges not being seen as shameful.
Even the first urge does not seem to be particularly scorned! Being a warrior is presented as a cause for bragging in the Shaded Citadel pearl, being comparable with being an artist and a fashion legend. The second urge, also does not seem to be suppressed. Multiple sources attribute some level of honour to parenthood! The aforementioned pearl also mentions Seventeen Axes, Fifteen Spoked Wheel as being a "Mother, Father and Spouse" without any hint of shamefulness. Nineteen Spades, Endless Reflections expresses pride about having progeny, mentioning it alongside their owned land and esteem among their peers.
After some peer review, an esteemed friend has told me to add a section on purposed organisms as well! This is not so much my area, so I might be a bit off on some things.
As moon says, the majority of purposed organisms were tubes in boxes, and that the primal fauna of the world are almost entirely extinct. A lot of the fandom seems to ignore the first part, and i can't say I blame them, but the evolution of the creatures is so much weirder than people think.
Concept art for the creatures has this interesting quality to it, where the organic parts of the creatures have an almost... melty quality to them.

In the concept art, the flesh appears as if it's almost defying the machinery to form an animal shape. It's as if it's conquering its own artificiality the way the foliage grows over the (stone, brick and concrete, not mostly metal as some think!) ruins.
Of course, it's hard to really tell how much of this reflects the finalised concept, most of the integration is much smoother in the game, in line with a seamless kind of biomechanical design. There was always an intention of biomechanical strangeness, as shown in this screenshot of the devlog before the term "slugcat" even existed!
That said, the melty nature of the concept art shows a level of wild change inherent the biomechanical nature of the creatures, as if they truly are the result of these "tubes in boxes" almost revolting against their own boxes.
and considering centipedes... some tubes may not have had boxes in the first place!
#rain world#rain world lore#rainworld#rw spoilers#please note! my role in downpour development does not make me an authority on what is canon or not!#my domain is entirely within challenge mode and arena which aren't canon anyway#my lore analysis is just lore analysis with no looks behind the scenes of anything vanilla#downpour was made as a fan expansion and the rewrites were just done directly by james#we didn't get any disambiguation on the lore (and thank fuck for that honestly. analysis is the best part)#though the hills ARE made of bricks#this is canon not because i say so but because it is visibly true in some areas of the game. part of the text and thus canon. weep.#i could go into more detail on most of this! purposed organisms aren't my area of expertise tho so i might be a bit shaky on some of that#anyway if anyone has any fact checking to do. please do so#media analysis is a dialogue!

y'all stop saying fyodor has never looked so sincerely angry before. he has.
I know this because, and this is not an exaggeration, the vast majority of my manga revisits are to enjoy his expressions of anger, disdain, and malcontent. i shit you not, several of my bsd meta posts wholly unrelated to fyodor were written because I happened to notice something else while flipping through to imbibe fedya's hissy fits. I don't reread the manga when I do this, just those scenes, unless something else catches my attention.
anyway, stop disrespecting my beloved pastime.
#bsd#bungou stray dogs#bsd fyodor#most people are remarkably bad at reading expressions#not me though#this isnt a bit i fixated on how emotions are nonverbally communicated so that i could lie better and to develop a pleading face#for most of elementary school i studied people's faces and workshopped my own by getting feedback from others and testing them in the field#then in 8th grade my gifted program teacher made us take an assessment on how well we could read faces#to debunk body language expertise#and demonstrate the fact that most people think they can read faces but most of us cant#emphasizing why trials and presumptions based on assumptions that we can are harmful#everyone predictably failed real hard#except for me. i made an 80%#my teacher made me take it again and explain to her my process.#then she asked where i learned it and i explained to her that i never got stickers at naptime in kindergarten because i never slept#so i began obsessively refining my fake sleep#it took months but i figured out how to coordinate all of the tells and it worked i started getting stickers#so then i started to practice other states of mind#and she marked me an outlier and removed me from the data 😭#anyway. all im saying is. i love fedya's face.

my go-to comfort vtmb replay for over probs 15 years now, has been a male ventrue named Jake that got picked up by his sire at a gay club he liked to zone out at between his job and sleeping. He lived that workaholic corpo life with an ambition of being a rich techbro. He was absolutely smitten by the prince the moment he saw him, in a 'idk if I want to smash him or to be him' way and he spent his unlife being a good little soldier until he exploded. (you know how it is.)
some of my fave hcs established in my runs are;
he had to straight up throw away his phone cause he missed one (1) day of work and everyone in his life instantly knew something was wrong and started actively looking for him.
he is totally smitten by the prince, but he would never even entertain the idea of even dropping a hint, because he is a good obedient follower of the capitalistic hierarchy of money and power (and now added Ventrue hierarchy on top of it)
he is good buds with Chunk and they have little chats every evening Jake drops by.
Jeanette and Therese scare the shit out of him. He managed to deescalate solely because he was scared and tried to turn the situation into an HR meeting in hopes of surviving it.
had he lived, he would not have stopped whining about his sewer adventures for the rest of eternity.
he has never violated the masquerade in his life, but he does all favours for the prince, once he is done being giddy and kicking his leggies after he gets an email from him.
he let Heather go after she started talking about destroying her life for him, such as leaving college and attempting to give him all of her money, but funny enough, he doesn't recognise the same behaviour in himself, and he isn't even blood-bound like her, he is just stupidly dedicated. :)
#he is really competent at his job#but outside of his fields of expertise#oof#not much happening in that cute blond head!#on a more serious note he was very lonely and had some internalised issues(tm)#and confused being rewarded for being an obedient pawn with acceptance#i have many much more developed OCs but he is my special silly little guy#: )

I'm sick of people telling me off for "self deprecating" for merely acknowledging that there are skills I do not have. I cannot instantly get a job as a showrunner with my current skillset. Now listen to me. Did I say A: I do not have enough experience for this role, B: I am a piece of garbage and I'm going to kill myself, or C: I hate you
#if I say that I'm not qualified for a job or don't have the right skills or interests my mum tries to take my fucking head off#''sound like you just don't want a job!!! have some confidence stop being lazy!!''#Damn maybe you're right I have suddenly developed 15 years of expertise in the last 30 seconds since this conversation started#why don't I become a nasa engineer while I'm at it#I think I'm a decent artist I just don't have fatal hubris

Hey friends, countrymen, lovers, etc. this post is just for the Americans out there, but if any of you all need help figuring out what steps you need to take to vote or where to find a voter guide for your region (Ballotopedia is a solid starting point if you want to see what's on your ballot) I'd be happy to help out, just shoot me a message, I can promise I'll find an answer for you in the first case and I'll do my best in the later.
#That said Fellow Californians:#I know prop 33 looks good#And is a good idea generally#But this specific setup of rent control is implemented in such a way as to be gotten around by not building#Which is not workable in our current legislative environment at various municipal levels#Maeamian dot tumblr dot com recommends a NO vote on prop 33#Although it will not fault you for being swayed by the arguements in favor#And it's not unsalvagable if it passes but it will need additional legislative work to protect its intent#Because as is its intent will not see implementation where it is most needed#At least according to the people in CA I know and trust to talk about housing issues#This isn't from firsthand expertise but I trust the experts I got it from#(Michael Tae Sweeny on bsky dot app among others)#ANYHOW the answer in the first case may be travel back in time if you've missed certain deadlines in certain states#But developing time travel will be a fun side project you can do#Also probably don't bother putting in your email on ballotpedia but you can if you want#Just like that will get you emails and why would you want more of those#This is not rebloggable because it does not apply to people who are not followers#Although anyone who follows is welcome doesn't have to be mutuals

I was feeling restless this afternoon and I knew I wanted to work a little on Amadeus but I also knew that I'm way too exhausted from Next Fest to do anything that requires making new things. Music composition, background art drawing, writing narrative, that was all out the window. So instead I started testing out some narrative workflow tools that one of my friends who is a game writer suggested (notion, which is more project management focused but it has some features that Asana doesn't that might make it useful for writing in particular; and campfire, which I think is going to be a complete game changer in organizing all of my brainstorming about plot and character motivations and stuff)
I'm going to spend some more time this next week building those out some more but I really think it's going to help me a lot. I kind of reached critical mass of what I could achieve in terms of writing with my existing and extremely disorganized tools, while also keeping track of changes and revisions and implementation and remembering what my big major overarching five episode plot is; this is going to make all of that so much easier I think...
#genuinely the best game development advice I have is to ask your friends for advice when you hit walls#that's easy for me to say because I happen to have a lot of friends who are in Game Dev in different disciplines#but even if you don't have those particular connections you definitely still know people who have expertise#that can help you a lot if you remember to ask#JULIA YOUR LIBRARY CATALOGING REFERENCE MATERIALS ADVICE CHANGED MY LIFE

I wish platforms that either 1. give recommendations or 2. display a lot of aggregate data/products/posts based on "relevance" or "featured" would discuss how their algorithm works. I need to know what factors actually go into this calculation and how it is actually weighted.
#hal rambles#what would be REALLY cool is one where it kept track of the factors but allowed the user to specify the algorithm#most platforms would not bother with this (*reasonable*) and i'm sure many users would find it to be a steep learning curve#but i would adore it#and of course lots of sorting and filtering options + Boolean operators and truncation (which preferably one would also be able to choose#what they wish to search through. for ex. applying the search to terms in reviews)#but. this takes a lot of dedication and expertise on the part of developers and requires faith in the userbase to actually use the features#instead of just going 'ugh! this algorithm sucks' when they haven't done anything at all to look for what they want#i genuinely think the hyper-algorithmic nature of most sites like this these days#where the algorithm is just some mysterious force that serves you what you want to see#ruins people's ability and willingness to seek out...anything really

about the copyright stuff.. do you think if someone gave complete legal consent for approval of use in an episode (with legal documents giving them permission/ ownership of the material) do you think they could use fanfic/au ideas then? wouldn’t that work around the copyright protections or is that not possible because even then if the person tried to sue or wanted to they couldn’t since it would be in their ownership (rcg) technically.
I don't know enough about the intricacies of copyright and intellectual property law to really say I'm giving you a professional answer, but if a contract was involved relinquishing ownership and/or claims, I'm pretty sure, yes.
In all honestly, I would go as so far as to say just a blanket statement that you relinquish all your right, title, and interest to any original plot, ideas, and/or dialogue in your story would do it. Similar to how some studios or writers have had contests or promotional things fans can submit their fan works to, if you tick a box and say you read and agree to the terms and conditions (normally being you relinquish your right to any monetary claims if they use your work), that's all there is to it. So yeah, if RCG wanted to do some kind of "fan written" or fan-contributed episode they absolutely could.
Just to restate: the refusal of creators and writers engaging with fanfiction due to copyright issues is really when it's put upon them: a fan hands them something or DMs them. That, they basically straight up know/are trained to refuse and not to engage with. When it comes to something more organic, like imagining a creator looking through Ao3 or ff.net, the extremely low likelihood that they are going to do that is because they know it is a very murky area they can easily dupe or hurt themselves walking into. They're supposed to actively avoid it, and most do, but if you want to think (or even strongly believe) your guy is browsing fics when he's bored as hell flying back and forth from LA to Wales multiple times a month, slap a little release on your work, if you want (Sometimes you see release disclaimers on other people's fanfiction. Though a lot of the time it's just a rejection of ownership because people are paranoid they can get in trouble for publishing fanfiction...lmfao).
#ask#copyright stuff#fanfiction#not releasing my right to the sugar daddy au#when rob builds that time machine i want credit#anyway i hope this is helpfful... its a very murky area#and also i deal with. real property law. not intellectual property law#so take my expertise here all with a grain of salt#also i joke in my strikeout#i firmly believe rob is not reading fanfiction unfortunately#hes like one of the prime examples of someone who absolutely shouldnt#creator developer producer writer#liability central over there#also hes probs writing in his head hourly and on napkins and legal pads and shit daily#ill say i barely read cos id rather write lmfao#i have a feeling hes the same way. other than his crypto books i suppose.
