124 years ago the newsboy union strike started, the newsies striked for fair pay against Pulitzer and Hearst
31 years ago the movie Newsies (about said strike) was created by Disney
11 years ago that movie became a broadway musical
6 years ago the musical was recorded and put on Disney+
78 days ago the WGA strike started striking against studios including Disney, the writers are striking for better and fair pay
5 days ago the SAG–AFTRA union also started to strike, also striking against the studios for better/fair pay
weird how Disney only cares about unions when they make money off of them

To some disney fans, please show some support for cast members of disneyland as we will be voting if we'd like to strike or not on July 19th. I will provide a link for the petition as people are being written up for supporting their union and union signage is being taken down behind the scenes. Since April, there have been negotiations and disney wants to give 25 cents more and refuses to budge. We are asking for a safe working environment, better attendance policy, and better wages.
Disney has $1.9billion to spend on a new land instead of fixing what is broken. They have enough to buy a soccer/football team (Angel City FC) , but they don't have enough to pay their cast member working less than a liveable wage.

hey so disney is actively hiring graphic designers in the wake of the VFX strike, so in solidarity with your comrades, don’t accept any of their interview invites or apply to their jobs
if the current staff is replaceable and insignificant to them, so are you

Walt Disney drove across the picket line every day, and on one occasion got out of his car to try to attack Babbitt.
Eventually, after five weeks, the strike was settled by mediators who ruled in favour of the union on every issue, and the workers received pay increases of nearly 50% in many cases. Babbitt also won his job back following a lawsuit. Walt Disney was bitter about his defeat until he died.
Haha dude literally died mad about it.

Got a new sign for the SAG/AFTRA Strikes to add
This legendary Sign came from May 1941 when the OG Disney Artists went on strike for the very first time after years of Classism and unfair treatment, And I think now is a very appropriate time to bring this sign back. I wish we could find the original maker and holder of this sign because, honestly, it fits even more so now

i know it’s long, but please go watch this Defunctland video if you can. It includes some truly wild context for Disney’s current attitudes about striking and unions in the later section. I will say, as it covers people working at Disney in the 1940s and 1950s, there are a lot of potentially triggering topics mentioned, including: rampant misogyny, grooming and abuse, racism, Cold War Era politics, and lots and lots of alcohol consumption. like. A LOT a lot
youtube
the history of Disney mistreating it’s staff literally dates back to their first feature film release, and before.

If you love Disney, its parks, its media, and its merch, listen up.
So I work for Disneyland, and we are talking about striking very soon. So soon, in fact, that we've been hosting rallies just outside of the parks. Yesterday was the 69th birthday of Disneyland Anaheim... it was also a monumental rally.
I haven't seen anyone on tumblr talking about the impending strikes against Disney. Not even going through the Disney tags or searching tumblr for "Disneyland Strike."
Let's talk about why we're striking:
Cost of living in the immediate SoCal region is nearly 2x as much as we are getting paid.
Cast members that have worked for the company for long periods of time are still paid as mucha s new hires.
Disney has showed up to union negotiations with insulting offers, including at 25 cent raise. Most cast members make $19.90
Disney rarely schedules you. In some areas and departments, you are fighting with your fellow cast members for hours. I have heard of cast members who are only scheduled for 1 4-hour shift per week. Many of those cast members have upwards of an hour commute to and from work.
Disney Admin has told attractions castmembers [so: rides, rollercoasters, and anything fun you get to do and see at the parks] that we are losing them money, which is why they refuse to schedule us and pay us. In the words of my partner, who also works at the parks, Disney without attractions is an over glorified mall and a food court. Disney needs us, and they know it, but they do not respect us.
Disney has an unfair attendance policy. It can be very difficult to get a needed day off, even when it has been requested weeks or months in advance. When you do take a day off [with-out accrued sick or vacation time] it counts against you. You can have 3 a month, 6 in 90 days, 9 in 180 days, or 12 in a year. How do you accrue sick/vacation? Hours worked, which can be impossible with the scheduling practices mentioned above. (Most cast members trade shifts among themselves to get around this.)
Cast members feel unsafe and unsupported in the parks. Many cast members have felt threatened by entitled guests upset that they are following policy. Disney Leads and Managers have to say yes to these guests and make things happen, though. [Which only makes this behavior worse and more dangerous for cast members who are only doing their job.]
Cast members also report feeling threatened, or even being literally threatened, by management in the parks. Especially cast members who have a second job. Especially cast members who know their rights.
Further, cast members work in hazardous conditions with pay that does not reflect that. Many cast members report losses of hearing, sore throats, and severe back and shoulder pain. Cast members are also exposed to infectious diseases at a much higher rate.

Edit because I fact-checked myself after the fact, my apologies:
TAG (The Animation Union) already exists and covers animation artists & writers. The above petition is about ADDING specific production roles to the union, and asking Disney to voluntarily recognize that unionization.
original text of the post with clarifying edits below
don't forget during the WGA strike that animation is not covered under the WGA deals [edit: but it is covered under TAG!] and as a result animation has gotten the shortest possible end of the stick in under-staffing, under-paying, and generally turning the field into gig employment.
please sign the petition here for Disney to recognize animation production workers as a union [edit: in the already existing TAG union!] and reblog this post!

I pointed this out in a Discord server I'm in and thought Id share here:
Bob Iger announced that Disney is going to absorb Hulu, and Hulu will no longer exist next year. All shows will move to the Disney+ app.
Disney also announced they were going to remove shows and movies periodically from their streaming services.
I believe both of these moves are because of the Writers Strike.
Disney knows its going to lose the strike. There is too much public support. Specifically, the WGA is going to win writers getting more residuals from streaming.
So if Disney takes shows off of streaming, they dont have to pay the writers the residuals.
They are going to use excuses like "not enough funding for the server capacity" or "not enough views to warrent keeping the show". These are BULLSHIT. Its all greed. Its only GREED.
Pay attention to what happens in the following weeks.
And keep supporting the writers' strike.

I came to mention that Marvel is owned by Disney and Disney supported Israel, so we are boycotting Disney
I'm giving you an additional reason to boycott (And I'm angry that Pixar's movie about emotions, the continuation of the previous movie, was a success, even a bomb, which means that Disney got the money)
So in short, Marvel belongs to Disney, and Disney supported Israel financially and even bragged about it, so if you type "Disney support Israel" on the Internet, you will see his message and how he brags about it)
Tumblr media
So fuck Disney, not for "Woke", but for supporting Israel, for censoring the creators, for recording in the area next to labor camps during the filming of "Mulan", fuck him for everything
TOH proved that diversity is not Disney's problem and right-wing conservatives call it "Woke" I give depth to the characters, the problem is queerbaiting and paying for anti-LGBT+ organizations
Disney is a disgusting capitalist company that only thinks about making money (Pocahontas and how much they romanticized white crimes and antagonized the tribe because they are angry and aggressive towards innocent white colonizers… And this romance, which is problematic, because it was based on a book by a man who distorted the facts and the real Pocahontas gave him a hard time for what he wrote in the book)
This movie proved that Disney counts on money, not on quality and creative freedom (Because "Beauty and the Beast" won an Oscar, it must get it too, fuck the fact that the movie is distasteful to those who learn about this girl's story)
Disney has so much shit on its conscience that it's no wonder it gave money to the colonizer
So yes, boycott the movie not only because of the characters depicting Israel, but also because Marvel belongs to Disney
