If I'm correct this version of Cassidy would be one of the mercenaries hired to protect the lord of the castle from Junkenstein.

He is called The Gunslinger and has taken up monster hunting as his job.

I would assume he'd be a monster hunter due to what this skin is based on, even if I have not seen the original source material.

Cassidy has been hired by many to track down monsters, Adlersbrunn is no different to him.

He could be hired at Adlersbrunn and finds a cute townsperson such as you to "get to know better".

As long as he's paid he doesn't mind slaying any monster.

I imagine this version of Cassidy is still as flirty as any other version.

Just because he happens to be a gunslinging monster hunter doesn't mean he isn't also a flirt.

Perhaps Cassidy hits up one of the bars in the town to get a drink before setting off to do more work.

That's when he meets you either working the bar or also drinking in it.

Another encounter could be being saved by him.

However... it's weird how he always searches you in particular out when he wants a chat.

In February, an officer in Saginaw Township, Michigan, rammed his vehicle through the school’s locked door to get inside the building following a swatting call.

"Hello, I am going to commit a mass shooting in the name of Satan," a voice with a fake Southern accent drawled to a police dispatcher in Seminole County, Florida, on May 12, 2023. The caller spoke slowly and deliberately when he told the dispatcher that he was armed with pipe bombs and an AR-15 rifle, walking into a mosque to kill everyone he saw. The call ends with the sound of gunshots likely sourced from a video game. That day, the same voice-over-IP phone number called threats into at least two other mosques in Florida, according to police records obtained by WIRED. That week, in a private Telegram chat, an individual operating the Torswats Telegram channel took responsibility for sending police officers scrambling to as many as 20 schools in Washington state and four historically Black colleges and universities in Texas. Audio from 911 calls reviewed by WIRED and interviews with local law enforcement confirm that many if not all of the Washington state calls were made by someone sounding like an individual associated with the Torswats account. Some used a similar script, referencing an AR-15 rifle and pipe bombs. Chapter 2: Identification - Part 1

Neon marvels at the sky. The real sky. She's never seen it before, breathed unfiltered air, felt real sunlight. Anis says the novelty will wear off in a day, given they're guaranteed to encounter Raptures within an hour of stepping foot on the surface.

Shifty agrees that there's not a lot of time to take in the sights. The mission objective is to investigate the control room of the power station. She initiates the purification protocol to clear ambient Alva Particles, an invisible substance produced by Raptures that disrupts electronics, and scans the terrain. Counters' route will be a maglev track that goes directly to the power station. Ideally they could just walk on the rail itself, but while the Nikkes could shrug off the high voltage running through it, the Commander cannot.

The Commander can choose to remain silent, or say they can handle it. If they stay silent, Anis encourages them not to feel bad, they're only human after all. If they say they can handle it, Anis flatly says no they can't.

Rapi asks where the current in the rail is coming from. Shifty explains that this city was the site of an attempt at setting up a defensive position on the surface, but was abandoned 5 years prior when the Rapture presence in the area grew too great. The power station was nearly complete when the site was abandoned, and has been autonomously generating power ever since. Anis asks if there are any humans left in the area since then, but when Shifty doesn't answer, she says that if the place was overrun, it's better if any "survivors" stay hidden.

Regardless, Rapi says that the first step is to shut off power to the maglev line, and asks Shifty how they can do that. Shifty marks the coordinates of a control room for the rail, and the squad sets out to find it.

There is a moment of silence before Anis comments that it's not the worst idea anyone's had, while Shifty yells that it's a terrible idea before quickly correcting herself and saying it's just impractical. Anis asks if Shifty has any more she'd like to add, but Neon is adamant that rubber boots would work. The Commander can agree, or refuse, but if they agree, Shifty immediately vetoes it.

As they're walking, Neon suddenly shouts, incidentally alerting a nearby group of Raptures she hadn't noticed. After cleaning them up, Neon asks if she did something wrong and Anis tells her that up on the surface, it's vital not to make unnecessary noise. Rapi asks why Neon suddenly shouted, to which she says that she came up with a solution to the electrified rail.

The Commander can wear rubber boots!

The squad arrives at the maglev control room, and Shifty gets ready to remotely cut the power. Rapi asks the Commander for their CombiLink. The Commander asks what she's talking about, and Shifty has to explain that it's the add-on and cable connected to their government issue phone that allows for remote interface with most human technology, they just have to plug it in to the right port. The Commander is completely at a loss, so Rapi offers to take care of it for them, and Anis asks if the Commander actually graduated from the military academy.

Shifty shuts off the power to the maglev line, and Counters is free to walk the track to the power station. Neon asks if they should get a pair of rubber boots first, but Anis tells her to stuff it.

The squad encounters more Raptures as they travel along the train line, but are able to dispatch them with little issue. Anis admits she's a bit worried about Neon's combat abilities, as she seems overly invested in offense while neglecting her defense. Neon replies that their weapons are all that stand between them and the enemy, so superior firepower is worth being a little imbalanced. Firepower is king!! Anis thinks she's nutjob.

With a bit more walking, Counters reaches the exterior of the power station, and Shifty gives them the go ahead to enter. Anis second guesses her, however. As far as they know, the station might be crawling with Raptures, and they should probably be careful. The Commander asks if the power station is still running, and Shifty says that it is. Observation logs indicate the station recently moved from passive to active function, and it's unclear why or how.

Commander asks if there's anyone still working at the power station. Shifty says that, officially, there are no humans living on the surface, but they should expect anything, as this isn't the first time an investigation of the station has been attempted. Anis chimes in that she heard about a large force attempting to retake the power station in the past and failing.

Shifty continues, saying that besides a possibility of survivors from the previous investigation, the power station itself generates enough power to sustain the Ark for 2 months in the event of emergency. Rapi says that it must be vitally important, though Anis snarks that it's apparently not important enough to send more than three people. Rapi turns on Anis and asks if she intends to give up, and if not, to think before she speaks.

Neon turns the topic back to how they're going to get into the station. Rapi bluntly says they should just destroy every Rapture and brute force their way in, and Neon is happy to oblige. Anis says that the decision falls to the Commander, and they give the go ahead to proceed with the operation. Anis cheerfully agrees, saying it's better to get things over with and die sooner rather then later. Rapi tries to reprimand her, but Anis doesn't relent, telling the Commander to stay in the rear where it's safe, and let the three of them put themselves in danger and do all the real work. She asks if they can handle that, hiding and barking orders while the rest of them serve as cannon fodder.

Rapi raises her voice and Anis snaps at her that she's just stating the facts. Rapi threatens that Anis could be charged with insubordination, which she dismisses. Rapi says she could have Anis killed for her behavior, which finally gets her attention, clearly hurt that Rapi would even suggest such a thing. Rapi says she's just trying to talk some sense into Anis, but Anis says that she's the sensible one for pointing out that they're being thrown into the meat grinder. Rapi concedes that they're in a difficult situation, but Anis isn't being fair to the Commander by jumping to conclusions without evening hearing their plan, prompting them to speak up.

The Commander says that they plan on having Counters sneak into the station undetected. Shifty examines the layout and says she has found a more discreet entry point, and the Commander asks her to mark it.

The squad moves to the marked location and find what appears to be a damp, foul smelling tunnel, blocked with debris. Anis asks what it is, and Shifty answers that it's a waste water drainpipe. Anis turns to the Commander and asks if they really expect them to climb into that thing, and they say yes. Neon notes the pipe is blocked and they can't get in, so Shifty says she'll try to find another route, but Anis suggests they just dig through it. Neon says the debris is too heavy to just dig out, but the Commander agrees, taking a page from Neon's book and suggesting they open the way with firepower!

Anis worries that an explosive would defeat the purpose of a stealthy entrance, but Shifty says there's no Raptures in the immediately vicinity so a controlled blast should be fine. Rapi moves to get started, but Neon asks the team to let her handle it. Anis is a little confused, but the group stands aside and leaves it to Neon.

With a perfectly controlled blast with her specialty shotgun shells, Neon clears the drainpipe. She turns to the Commander and exclaims that she knew there's no question that can't be answered with firepower, but it took the Commander's encouragement to remind her. She describes the Commander as a wise old Master of the Path of Firepower, and looks forward to learning more from them in the future, while Anis side eyes her. The Commander gives Neon a thumbs up and tells her to keep it up, while Rapi asks that Neon have a little more decorum and address the Commander by their appropriate rank.

With the path ahead cleared, Counters is able to press on...but the drainpipe is still partially filled with waste water, and it's so small that they'll have to crawl single file to get through it. Rapi goes in first, followed by Neon, then Anis, with the Commander bringing up the rear.

It reeks. The smell is overpowering. Anis asks how it can smell so bad if there's no one living in the city, and Rapi answers that even if there's no actual waste, all kinds of things like mold and fungus can build up where there's water. Neon mutters that she thinks she's about to puke, so Rapi tells her to disable her olfactory function. She complains that doing so makes her feel less human, and Anis reminds her they AREN'T human as she turns her own olfactory sense off.

Rapi asks how the Commander is holding up. The Commander can say they're doing just "peachy" or remark on the foul smell, but no matter what they say, Anis remarks that their comment better not be aimed at her.

Neon comments that she never expected she'd have to climb through a drainpipe to avoid confrontation. As far as she knows, most commanders treat Nikkes as expendable tools and prefer more direct tactics. Anis says it has nothing to do with tactics, they're just a bunch of idiots too lazy to come up with a real plan. In her experience, commanders are entitled manchildren that all think they're the savior of humanity and throw tantrums if they get any pushback at all.

Just then Rapi calls for the group to stop, but no one reacts in time. Neon bumps into Rapi, Anis bumps into Neon, and the Commander bumps into Anis.

Anis balks at the Commander touching her ass. They can repeat their comment about the smell, or brush it off and say it's nothing. If they bring up the smell, Anis again says that the smell isn't coming from her. If they say it's nothing, Anis defensively says it's not "nothing" to her.

Either way, she pushes the Commander back, then turns and asks Rapi what the sudden stop is for. Rapi says that she can see light ahead, they're inside the power station. Relieved, the squad can't get out of the pipe fast enough.

Unlikely Occupations for Handsome Jack

I played this on the soon-no-longer-twitter, and figured I like these too much to lose them when that site inevitably becomes an ex-parrot. This post will collect all the previous AUs I've made, and you can request new ones in the comments.

The rules are simple: name a job/occupation that would be very unlikely for Handsome Jack, and I'll try to come up with an IC(ish), (mostly) not crack explanation of how he ended up that way. All ideas generated from this exercise are free for the taking, as long as: 1) the prompt giver doesn't mind; 2) you let me know what you make of it.

Note: while any minimum wage job fits the 'unlikely' criteria, ideally I'm looking for suggestions of jobs/occupations that someone (but normally, not Jack) would conceivably WANT to do, and not just to survive. It's sad but true that people rarely end up in minimum wage jobs for interesting reasons. So please go easy on burger flipping, shelf restocking, call centers and the like.

Janitor

Now, I know that ‘it’s just a front’ may sound like a cop-out because it can apply to any ‘Jack in a minimum-wage job�� scenario. So I tried to make it more interesting.

Setting: can be modern-day, can be sci-fi, but needs to be an AU in which Jack isn’t instantly recognizable by all and sundry. He is a rich and successful asshole, though. But there’s a certain shiny object he really, REALLY wants to get his hands on. Could be physical thing, could be information. Either way, something that money (of which he has plenty) can’t buy, because it’s held by another, even richer asshole.

Multiple attempts to infiltrate the guy’s home, where the shiny is kept, have failed. The mark is famously a recluse, his security systems are deadly, and all his staff are life-long friends and acquaintances. There’s only one tiny security hole: cleaning and maintenance. Now, most of it is automated, but once every few months, there’s a need for human labor. So every few months, a trusted and vetted housekeeping services agency dispatches some of its most trusted and vetted workers. And isn’t it lucky that Jack has a contact at said agency?

It goes off without a hitch at first. Agency Contact makes sure Jack’s fake identity passes all the background checks, and adds him to the next crew dispatched to Rich Asshole’s house. But then, Agency Contact is busted for an unrelated piece of shady business. Their latest acts in the company come under scrutiny. Jack’s employment status holds, but not his assignment. He is supposed to have at least six months of spotless (...sorry :p) record with the agency before he can get assigned to high-priority jobs like this.

So now Jack has two options. Say "fuck this shit, I'm out" and look for a different solution that might not even exist... or hold out for the sure-fire way in, even if it means spending six months pushing around a mop while toeing the company line. What’s it gonna be, Jack??

DJ

Going off the beaten track for this one, because I didn't want to do the obvious option of 'rich guy's hobby/vanity side gig'.

My take is, we're back on Tantalus and in Jack's (John's?) youth. It's a place full of poverty and violence, but also a colorful night life. Of course, many night clubs are fronts for drug and arms (and worse) trade. Getting in with the clubs is a solid strategy for a young guy with his head on his shoulders.

Jack tries to do different jobs that take him all over, to see the backstage stuff as much as possible. (He even has a brief stint as an unlikely bouncer: no-one expected the scrawny 20yo to throw some real good punches.)

His first DJ experience happens when he's a stage hand / gofer at a club, and the actual DJ goes off to screw someone, telling Jack to take over for half an hour. The music is cued up, just look like you're having fun, he's told. This is the first taste he gets of the kind of power he didn't think he wanted. Because the power that comes with money and access and control is one thing (and make no mistake, he wants that). But the power to stand in front of a room full of people and command their mood? To be cheered? To get them to chant your name, even? That hits something really, really deep inside young Jack. He knows that day that however he gets to the top, he won't just be the man behind the curtain. He will be the one whose name the crowd is chanting.

From there on, Jack's goal is clear. Not only is he going to get power and money and his slice of all the shady business, but he's also going to be a goddamn ✨celebrity✨ while at it. For bonus points, add a scar earned in a gang war ten years later and make Handsome Jack his crime name *and* stage name.

Florist

Setting: semi-historical or steampunk flavored Victorian. There is a war on, but it's pretty far away or a relatively cold one. So no immediate danger on the home front, but spycraft is in high demand. Jack is an era-appropriate Bond type who gets saddled with an assignment to...

"Make bouquets? Is this a joke?"

No, it's not. The flower shop Jack would be operating out of is a hub receiving intel from multiple covert informants. It will be Jack's job to pick out what's important, and pass it to the right people, encoded via flower bouquets. Sending messages via different flowers are already a thing in this society, as they were in our world's Victorian era, but obviously, the spy organization obviously has its own code book, so no harm done if a bouquet falls into the wrong hands.

"Except I'd have to bloody make it again, so, actually, plenty of harm done."

In order to maintain the cover, the flower shop also has to do legitimate business, so Jack gets to make plenty of "civilian" bouquets as well, and be all polite and gentlemanly with the customers.

There's only one silver lining to this dismal assignment. The assistant assigned to help Jack with sorting and aggregating the intel is pretty darn cute.

Marine Biologist

(Short write-up, but this is one of my personal faves!)

Canon-adjacent BL settings, but instead of Pandora, Jack is drawn to Aquator in his vault-hunting pursuits, searching for a vault rumored to be at the bottom of the ocean. Helios is a city-sized submarine!

For bonus points, add a Rhack plot featuring mercreature!Rhys, who has knowledge of the vault, but is reluctant to reveal its location, and whose trust Jack is desperately trying to win.

In a Preschool

Modern-day, Passable Dad AU. It's career day at Angel's school. Jack didn't want to come, what with being a currently unemployed head of a recently-failed startup. But he can't say no to Angel, so... sigh, here we go.

Jack is the last one to talk, his hope being that maybe they’ll run out of time and he won’t have to. Alas, his slot comes up. A few minutes in, the teacher gets an urgent phone call and steps out (don’t come after me about child safety protocols in this AU, okay :p).

Then the period is technically over, and the teacher isn’t back (guess the phone call was urgent enough to make them run out without telling people; they’re so fired). Other parents have left at some point during the period, because they have jobs / better things to do. Jack tries to send Angel to go find an adult, but she declares they’re not allowed to leave the classroom on their own (because she’s an ass). But, she continues, they can’t be left on their own, either (like I said, an ass).

So, Jack is stuck with a bunch of preschoolers for an hour. Once he runs out of failed startup stories, he just starts rubber-ducking new business ideas off of them. It’s surprisingly effective: kids are really good at poking holes in what seem like reasonable plans to adults.

And this is how, once a teacher finally comes to see what’s going on, Mr. Lawrence is offered a job as a substitute teacher at his daughter’s preschool. He will get fired once he deals with a bully by holding the offender up by the ankle until a believable apology is delivered.

Pediatric Nurse

(the prompt giver was very specific that it should be nurse, not doctor)

Setting: Tantalus, Jack is a single dad and dirt-poor. Angel is hospitalized with something that requires long-term inpatient care, and Jack literally doesn't have the money to pay for her treatment and rent, so he loses the apartment and starts low-key living at the hospital.

He's getting away with it pretty well. Angel shares a room with a few more kids, whose parents catch on pretty quickly, but don't mind that an extra parent is hanging around, because the hospital is permanently understaffed, and the kids like having company. (He gets more than an occasional meal from other kids' parents, too.)

When Jack's not doing gig work on his laptop, he's reading up everything about Angel's condition as well as all-purpose medical care so he can take care of her when she's finally allowed to leave the hospital. He's a fast learner, and soon ends up helping out the permanently overworked nurses with basic stuff like changing dressings, giving an extra hand with whatever, and even fixing up some medical equipment when something outdated inevitably breaks. It's not long before the kids in Angel's room (and the adjacent rooms) start calling him Nurse Jack.

The only one who's not thrilled about Jack's permanent presence on the ward is a young (and very attractive) doctor who's being a real stick in the mud about 'non-medical personnel outside of visiting hours'. The fact that, thanks to Jack's liberal use of nicknames, the kids start calling him Dr. Cupcake doesn't win Jack much love, either. Things between them getting more tense by the day, and Jack is this close to getting banned from the hospital outside of strict visiting hours.

That is, until one day, some Tantalus bandits barge in, demand that the whole floor is cleared so that their boss can get medical attention, and even take some medical personnel (including Dr. Cupcake) hostage to make their point. Little did they know that one of their hostages is: a) not a licensed medical professional, but b) real handy with a gun.
