The Dungeon Master’s Design Kit (1988) is a bit of an oddity of the 1E era, a book of advice on creating adventures. 1E, in general, wasn’t very good at telling players how to do anything. The old school adventure style of dungeon exploration was taught mostly by example, and that worked well enough. But in a post-Ravenloft, post-Dragonlance, increasingly narrative-heavy world, stringing a bunch of rooms together wasn’t enough. That’s where the Design Kit comes in.
There are three booklets in the folder. The first is mostly dedicated to explaining how to build those traditional sorts of adventures spaces, and how to thread action through them. Much attention is paid to things like featured monsters, designing a central villain, creating plausible mysteries. The second is a booklet of forms, a kind of workbook, to help parse and prepare. Of most interest is the “Encounter” form, a sort of one page distillation of a single event or battle, with notes on everything needed to run it. This anticipates a lot of 90s D&D adventure design (which string these sort of events together to form a narrative) as well as a method of presentation that would return in the 3e and 4e days.
The third booklet is a big think on the more ambiguous aspects of narrative adventure design. What’s the difference between a major and a minor villain? How do you handle traps? Do red herrings enhance a plot or distract from it? MacGuffins, weaknesses, “cruel tricks,” climaxes and more head other chapters. Its a whole smörgåsbord of RPG rumination that should probably be on every GM’s shelf.
Sweet Parkinson cover, too.

TIARNAN IS NORMALLY VERY NICE I PROMISE.
He just also has like three specific things that make him angry, and Fiona managed to do at least two out of the three (and tangentially the third) which is what resulted in him actually drawing his sword cane for the first time. Thankfully, he passed his will save to not do a little violence as a small treat.
Fiona belongs to @theitalianmafia
Timelapse under the cut, along with some context for the scene, cw for swearing. ^^ Reblogs go a long way supporting artists on tumblr!

Tiarnan pauses if only for a moment, seeing Fiona's remorse, the flames licking off of his form only slightly less. Absentmindedly, his hands had drifted to one holding the shaft of his cane, and the other with his thumb hovering over the handle's button.
He still takes one more step towards her, looming over her small form pressed into the wall. "How dare you bait Leon into harming you," his tone still sharp with anger...though there was a barely perceptible hint of anguish hidden beneath the rage as well. But, at the mention of Leon by name, the flames intensify again, as he returns to a louder tone. "Keeva is one thing. My best friend is another entirely."
At this his thumb presses inwards, and a small click is heard moments before a flash of steel comes streaming out of Tiarnan's cane, pointed directly at Fiona's throat. "He’s all I have left from before the rebellion right now. The only one I haven't lost from before getting on this fucking ship." The slightest hint of wisps now intermingle with the flames radiating off Tiarnan now.

“If it wasn’t for Hammer over here, we’d all be in a bit of trouble I reckon.” Dank had wandered to the tall human’s side, adjusting his robes about himself. The rest of the group nodded in agreement as Orlogg dropped from the eaves to the ground below and rushed to Dante, grabbing him in a tight hug.
“Get off me.” Dante croaked as the half-Orc squeezed him off the ground. Orlogg dropped him and nodded towards Armand in thanks. The man shook his head and looked around the party.
“Is everyone all right? Any injuries?” He asked as Orlogg reached into his pouch, producing one of his salves. Shenzu raised his left leg, a series of gashes carved into the soft tissue. Armand knelt and placed a hand over the cuts, shooing Orlogg away.
“You’re lucky, it’s not down to the bone.” The man’s hands glowed with a soft amber light as he placed them on the Draar’s injured leg. When he was finished the wound was healed, but the Draar continued to keep his weight off it fully.
“It’ll be sore for a while, but you should be okay. After a night’s rest, you'll be good as new.” Armand said. Shenzu sniffed, “It is nothing, I can still fight. Thank you.” Orlogg offered his salve to the Draar.
“This should help. At the very least it can numb the pain if you still have any.” The Draar scowled at the fowl smelling liquid but took it anyway.
