I don’t why but I get giddy when I see the detail that the game cartridge of the shipwrecked 64 thing has (or more specifically the ESRB logo on it)
Tumblr media
It’s the old logo
Tumblr media
That just makes me feel excited to see that detail

Sonic Superstars issued "Everyone" rating by the ESRB
Tumblr media
Sonic Superstars was officially issued an 'Everyone' rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board this past week.
Content descriptors include 'Mild Fantasy Violence' and 'In-Game Purchases'.
Official rating summary
“This is an action platformer in which players assume the roles of Sonic and his friends as they zoom around colorful zones and attempt to defeat Dr. Robotnik. As players speed through whimsical environments, they can jump on enemies' heads, causing them to transform into small creatures; Sonic and friends react to damage by losing coin-like rings and falling off-screen when defeated. Boss battles can depict more protracted combat, with cartoony explosions.”

A Toontown UK CD-Rom from 2004.
Interestingly, the case uses an ESRB Rating, a rating system mostly used in the United States and Canada. PEGI, the rating system used in Europe, had been established a year prior in April 2003.
It is unknown why this is the case, but it's likely because PEGI wasn't actually in UK Law until 2012.

This scene from the 1992 videogame Night Trap was brought up in a senate hearing as supposedly promoting violence against women. This senate hearing later led to the creation of the ESRB. Night Trap was among the first video games to receive an 'M' rating. Do you think it really deserved it?

So here’s a cool thing I realized today!
Years ago, I misplaced my copy of A Link to the Past, and I eventually bought another copy, only to later rediscover the copy I lost.
As you can see, one is an early revision, and the other Is a later revision. There might be a few minuscule differences in the game code, but that’s not the interesting part.
The interesting part is that the early revision has no ESRB rating, wheras the later one does. What gives?
That’s because when the game first released, the ESRB didn’t exist yet.

imagine a Kirby game with Marx as the main protagonist
you get to be a little scoundrel for the main campaign
has an M rating, but mainly because Marx uses swear words liberally
bare minimum redemption arc, Marx is only somewhat less of a jerk by the end

I'm still thinking about ESRB rating of Elden Ring describing Godrick as a "boss character", but Malenia as "a humanoid monster with scales/scars covering its breast and pelvic regions". Like, why is she not "a boss character with scales/scars..."? Is she somehow more monstrous than Godrick?..

On October 15, 1992, Sega CD released their first Interactive Movie using game play referred to as full-motion video or FMV. While the game, titled Night Trap, got mixed reviews, it became a target of opponents of violence, leading to it being removed from Toys R Us. It featured heavily in the Senate hearings on video game violence, which prompted the creation of the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) rating system. ("Night Trap", Video Game, Event)

What soccer mom at ESRB rated The Mansions of the Gods game T? Aside from being simple and repetitive, it's super tame. The "violence" is clean and oversimplified. The game should've been rated E10 at most.
