Blurb: Little Red Riding Hood is a classic story...but there's more to every tale than meets the eye. Before you judge a book by its cover, you've got to flip through the pages. The story begins at the end of the tale and winds its way back. Chief Grizzly and Detective Bill Stork investigate a domestic disturbance at Granny's cottage involving a karate-kicking Red Riding Hood, a sarcastic wolf, and an oafish woodsman.

Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil (2011)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Hoodwinked! Looked awful; so terrible anyone who caught it in theatres probably wondered if there was something wrong with the projector. The writing saved the movie. It featured catchy songs, a novel angle on the fairytale thing and pretty good jokes. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil doesn’t have such redeeming qualities. It looks like garbage and the writing is just as poor. Had I seen this in theatres and paid that extra $3 for the 3D, I might’ve died of shame.
Wolf (voiced by Patrick Warburton), Granny (Glen Close), and Twitchy Squirrel (Cory Edwards) now work for the Happily Ever After organization under the supervision of Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers). While Red (this time voiced by Hayden Panettiere) trains in a monastery far away, the group fails to rescue Hansel and Gretel (Bill Hader & Amy Poehler) from the hands of a wicked witch. Their kidnapping is tied to the theft of an age-old desert recipe that grants supernatural abilities, meaning it’s more important than ever for the group to let go of their disagreements and band together.
Once more written by Cory Edwards, Todd Edwards and Tony Leech, the script is abysmal. This sequel came 6 years after the first. Instead of working on the script during that gap, the writers wrote it hours before their deadline, grabbing liberally from the bag of references you’ve seen a thousand times whenever they couldn't think of a joke. Andy Dick returns briefly as Boingo the Bunny, just so they can steal some lines from Silence of the Lambs. We're subjected to references from Star Wars, Goodfellas, and John McLane’s catchphrase from Die Hard… twice. The only children who could possibly tolerate this film are too young to understand these winks and the adults will only furrow their brows. The gags aren’t merely unfunny, they’re anti-funny. You resent "Hoodwinked Too!" and if anyone amusing did actually come up (theoretically, mind you), you wouldn’t laugh out of spite.
This movie constantly pelts you with gimmicky voice acting - Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong voice two of the Three Little Pigs. It’s a desert barren of imagination and creativity. At no point does the film do anything pleasantly surprising. Japeth the Goat returns. Your heart leaps. Perhaps a comical song is underway? Nope. Just a forgettable, horrid tune. They find a way to crowbar in the Woodsman (Martin Short) again but he’s nothing but a plot device to get us from the second act to the third. Nothing more. You don’t care about anything on-screen. The animators didn't either. Granted, they had to stick somewhat close to the visual style of the first movie to maintain some kind of continuity, but generally, scenes are empty, and the conclusion - which features a Godzilla-sized rampage - has the big threat varying wildly in size from shot to shot.
The only good thing about Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil is that it's forgettable. You’ll groan and gnash your teeth while it’s playing, you’ll be in agony listening to the bad jokes, the stiff animation will make you desperate for anything better. Once it’s over, however, the ordeal is so bland and mirthless you won’t even have the rage necessary to set it on fire. (On DVD, October 4, 2019)

The Exhibitors Herald, June 1926
The first of the deluxe presentations was at the Forrest theatre, Philadelphia, Thursday evening. The audience was composed largely of members of the Advertising Clubs of the World, which was holding an international convention in the Quaker City, and the members of the Poor Richard Club. There were also present a large turnout of society, official and judicial life of Philadelphia. The other audience, which included Mrs. Coolidge, members of the diplomatic corps and Washington newspapermen, as guests of the National Press club, viewed the picture at a special screening Friday night at Poli’s theatre in Washington. General W. W. Atterbury; Senator-elect [and notorious political boss] Wm. S. Vare; Senator [and law professor] George W. Pepper; Lieut. Commander Geo. B. Wilson, U. S. There were a bunch of Universal employees in attendance too but that's less interesting to me. Let's see who went to the Washington show

ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.
A Marvel/DC crossover.
But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. For example, picture a group of people walking to a Big Belly Burger while listening to Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. That's just a fraction. I have an ENTIRE starting cast as well.
Welcome... to Earth-812

Hoodwinked! (2005)
Tumblr media
The best way to view Hoodwinked! isn’t in theatres, on 4K, Blu-ray, or even DVD. My recommendation? Find it on VHS tape. With any luck, you won’t be able to tell how awful the graphics look after all that picture degradation. I can’t overemphasize their shoddiness. Think commercial for a grocery store chain - a local grocery store chain - from 1999, when people realized CG animation could be a thing but way overestimated what the technology could do. It’s a shame because the script is terrific. There are loads of original songs and they’ll make you bust a gut. This is the kind of movie that’s begging for a big-budget remake but in the meantime, what we have has a chance of becoming a favorite despite its shortcomings.
Red Riding Hood (voiced by Anne Hathaway) arrives at her grandmother’s house to find Granny (Glenn Close) tied up and the Big Bad Wolf (Patrick Warburton) in her bed. Disaster is averted when a woodsman (Jim Belushi), barges in through the window. After the police arrive, they’re certain the Wolf was not only caught red-handed, but that he’s responsible for the string of robberies in the valley. Detective Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers) isn’t so sure.
Did I mention how aaaaaawful the movie looks? The human characters (there are a few) look like CG nightmares, or - at best - something a competent first-year college student would generate… on a coffee binge the night before the assignment is due. In its defense, the budget was mega, ultra-small and director Cory Edwards used the limited funds well. In this Rashomon-style story, there are few locations and characters but the assets being re-used multiple times doesn’t make the movie “feel” cheap. Most importantly, a lot of time and effort was put into the screenplay.
It’s a mystery astute viewers will be able to deduce probably about halfway through but will still find amusing to follow. Younger kids? They probably won’t figure any of it out ahead of time. Does knowing the culprit spoil some of the movie’s fun? A bit, but that's where the songs come in. There are several good, memorable ones whose tunes will play in a loop in your head because of the melody, the rhymes or simply because of how much they made you laugh. This is a clever, memorable subversion of the fairy tales we all know.
The longer you wait, the more the picture will be compared to the works of Pixar and Dreamworks and even their worst-looking movies look a thousand times better than this. Ultimately, however, it isn’t how good a movie looks that makes or breaks it. In terms of writing and voice work, Hoodwinked! fares extremely well. If I've been harsh on the movie it's so I can prepare you for it. I'm almost certain you'll come back and say "Come on Adam! Give this movie a break! It was great!" because in many ways, it is great. (On Blu-ray, August 9, 2019)
