Full Day off In Kyoto
We started the day by walking over to our tour! Thomas thought it would take 20 minutes, but it was actually a 30 minute walk. We did it in 25. (Very proud of Meaghan and her still sore calves.)
We met the tour group outside of a FamilyMart at a train station nearby. There was an older Australian couple, a younger couple from LA (an Israeli guy and a Chinese woman) and then a young American-born Japanese kid from Mystic, Connecticut. We made a quick stop all together to have miso ice cream. It was good!
We hiked into the back of the temple and it was actually trickier than I would’ve expected. This is a theme with Japanese hikes I’m learning. I tried to hang back and help the older folks with the slick and steep parts. They’re 78 and it was definitely a little scary for them. The first stop was the old shrine. It was beautiful, moss-covered and full of fox statues. It is less visited because of the newer shrines at the top.
From there we visited a bamboo forest. It smelled of fish — apparently from the rotting of the new bamboo shoots. After that it was a hefty hike up to the gates themselves. We got to skip a lot of the tourists going this way! We saw shrines to many different Shinto deities and prayed at a few of them. The number of gates was insane. Most are donated by local companies as a thank you for the prosperity they’ve received. There are fox statues everywhere as they represent those specific gods. The foxes will hold specific things in their mouth- a scroll to represent wisdom and knowledge, a ball to bring your wishes to the gods, a key to bring benefits down from the gods to the people and a rice place to represent good harvest and business.
We walked up and down the ridge line visiting the different god’s shrines, and then climbed back down into town and the main temple area. It was pretty packed by the time we were done. Me and Meag immediately jetted out of there in an Uber because we wanted to make it to the Nishki fish market. We got there and it was a long covered hallway setup, like a lot of neat places in Japan.
We were both hungry so we stopped at the first stall. Big ole plate of that fat assed toro. Fuck me up with a little octopus with a quail egg brain on a stick. What’s next? Mother fucking EEL baby. Little beers.
After that we kept swimming up stream. Our next step was a little food hall area. Tempura shrimp & eel, eel on skewers, and a little horse sushi. All good. All groovy.
Next we stopped in a little shop and bought a few condiments. One was a nice furikake mix, another was a spicy miso, and then a chili paste. While Meag did that, I went and bought us little rice cake donuts with apples and nuts.
We loved this, and did a bit more wandering in the alley before calling it for nap time. Back at the hotel Meag sawed logs and I logged time in our outdoor bathtub. A tight hour later we were good to go! But go where? Anywhere.
We strolled one way. Nothing. We strolled another way: shrines. Temples. Towers! Cheese filled pastries in the shape of 10 yen coins. They have it all here folks. I tried to snap a photo of some ceramic wall titties and was accosted by the titty owner, and had to pay 100 yen copyright fee.
Having wandered a lot of alleys, we dipped into a beautiful little cocktail bar for a drink. I had a Japanese whisky. Meag had a shisho gin and tonic. My next round was their matcha old fashioned, but Meag stopped the show with the parmagiano gin mare. It had little peppers, drops of olive oil and cheese shaved right into it. So tasty!
Sadly we had to take off for dinner at this point, but dinner was a stunner in what had been a series of stunner dinners. Our first round was a wonderful sashimi. Then a seared eel and bonito. He seared it directly on a charcoal! That was cool. After that we had some amazing wagyu served on a hot ass brick.
We also had a little crab salad (don’t eat the leaf, I ate the leaf.) We also had the most amazing skewer of eel over rice with a raw egg. Not to be defeated by the end of our omakase I ordered an uni sandwich. So much uni! It fell out and Meag and I had to scramble to put it back in.
The chef was incredible! He suggested his favorite sake. He shared a bottle of sparkling sake with us for our anniversary (always lie when booking reservations, you never know what you’ll get!). It was great. He was so kind and his food was so good. The center of his kitchen was a charcoal grill with three stations. To our left, a steamer. It steamed plates, rice and fish! To the center: a super hot grill. There’d he’d top off charcoal, or heat… bricks. Then to the right was his multi-level grill. He’d move items up and down depending on their done-ness.
All and all it was great. Then we went home and realized I left my camera so we want back, said hi again, and then left for real! It was a really great way to spend our last night in Kyoto.
This morning we packed, we ate tiny hotdogs and egg sandwiches and hopped on the bullet train back to Tokyo. Tonight we hope to check out the Deaf owned izakaya, do another omakase and check out a bar we’ve been wanting to see.

Comfort food is a very personal thing; varying from person to person, even within the same household, let alone country or region. Tell me about some comfort foods you've encountered in your travels, and the people who introduced you to them
Comfort food, how I love thee! Despite growing up as Nord as they come, I love experimenting with my food as you all know, and have come across some real gems in my travels over the years.
Altmer
Spending time with my lovely Vellalinwe has taught me a thing or two about Altmeri cuisine, right down to the dishes the High Elves enjoy in their own homes. One of her favourites is a creamy, dairy-free rosemary and tomato soup with rice dumplings. Rice dumplings are little fried balls of seasoned rice, and are easy to break apart in the soup. Not too filling but just hearty enough to hit the spot.
Argonians
My close friend Marries-the-Night is a connoisseur of all things Saxhleel, especially food. The dish that will make any Argonian feel cozily moist is a bit bowl of hot noodles with crunchy honeyed mealworms and chicken. The saltrice noodles are flat and wide, and are stir-fried and served dry with a delicious sweet-and-spicy sauce made from native Murkmire plants.
Bosmer
If there's one thing that my friend Berrilyn has taught me, it's that Bosmeri late-night post-jagga food may very well be the best in Tamriel. Think sausage-stuffed fried chicken wings with creamy timber mammoth cheese sauce, sweet mammoth cheese omelette with bacon, and...just plain old cups of timber mammoth cheese, served hot and gooey (and pungent). Don't forget the salami sticks and pork crackling for dipping!
Bretons
Comfort food is taken very seriously in High Rock, and it's bound to be hearty. I'm personally a big fan of what the Bretons call cob loaf: a whole loaf of fresh sourdough bread is carved out, filled with something delicious, and the remaining bread is used for dipping. The chef at Alcaire Castle fills her cob loaf with a creamy, cheesy spinach dip with lardons!
Dunmer
Crab meat and scuttle is a popular snack among Dunmer from Blacklight to Mournhold, but my friend Lisandre from the Grey Quarter introduced me to something just as moreish: ash yam balls filled with gooey scuttle and saltrice. Fried like the Imperial arancini, these delicious bite-sized balls are made from ash yam paste, and can be served sweet and savoury. Ideal when dipped in flaming hot Stonefalls-style chutney!
Imperials
My newest friend, Viatrix Maxine, hails from the cold town of Bruma in northern Cyrodiil, where comfort food is king. One of her favourite dishes is a simple potato porridge with cured ham and smoked venison sausage, cinnamon, butter, and treacle. The sweet-and-salty blend of flavours is delicious, and the thick porridge is sure to warm you up in no time.
Khajiit
One of my favourite things to eat in Elsweyr is my friend Anxious-Claws' excellent moon sugar rice pudding. Made with coconut cream, sago pearls, glutinous rice, mango mash, and lots of moon sugar, this is one dessert that will keep you coming back. It's traditionally served chilled, and is the perfect sweet treat for any time of day!
Nords
We Nords love fighting, and I have a feeling that I will cause some fights when I reveal that my favourite Nordic comfort food is not the humble boiled creme treat or a good horker stew. No, it is something quite different: I declare venison pies to be my ultimate go-to when I'm feeling gloomy or homesick. Traditionally, pies have a thick and flaky all-butter crust, and are filled with a thick venison stew that's loaded with chunks of meat, juniper berry gravy, potatoes, and carrots. It's the perfect light meal (or a full meal, if you have two).
Orcs
My close friend Herregud Jotuncrusher is the disgraced (but highly dignified) daughter of a clan chief, and grew up eating the finest Orcish cuisine. But at the end of the day, you can't keep even the poshest Orc from their favourite comfort dish: thick, smoked slices of honey-baked ham, served with fried eggs, a tangy frost mirriam sauce, and a couple of raw radishes or baked potatoes.
Redguards
When I first visited the Alik'r, I met an old man in one of the smaller taverns in Bergama, who taught me the secrets to a really, really good mutton biryani. Much like Khajiiti biryani but far less sweet, this dish is fragrant with saffron and cumin, and the spicy grilled goat meat has the perfect amount of char. Filling, tasty, and easy to whip together, this is a sure way to win over any hungry Redguard.

Can you please do a head cannon for a s/o who is from Japan and is never really seen without some Green or Bubble tea and also always wears these cute kawwai Japanese clothes.(tbh it'd be cool if they were so pro with using chopsticks). It'd be great if you can do it with Masky, Hoodie, Toby, Jeff and BEN? Would also want them to keep on telling them to try some of the stuff they eat like sushi. Sorry if it's too long it's my first time requesting for Creepypasta headcannons ;w;
They’re all food nerds.
Masky
Masky likes tea, but he's more of a coffee kind of guy.
He wouldn't think anything much of the style, except that if you try to put him in any cute clothing he'll bite your fingers.
Unless it's an edgy jacket that makes him look cool.
But he will accept any snacks.
He likes anything spicy, and sweet for that matter.
He's a slut for Hi-Chews.
Once you introduce him to the candy, he'll eat one after every cigarette.
If you speak Japanese to him, he'll literally stare at you for 20 seconds and try to process whatever tf you just said.
This boi loves fish, and loves sushi for that matter.
Has 100% ate a glob of wasabi and proceeded to regret every single one of his life decisions.
But he'll eat anything with noodles in it.
And Ramen is his favorite go-to.
Hoodie
Hoodie's chill asf.
He doesn't watch much anime except for the mainstream ones, and even those he doesn't watch all the way through.
But he likes Ghibli films.
He absolutely loves Bubble tea, and he loves the bubbles more bc he's a total slut for anything tapioca.
It's his favorite pudding flavor.
Put together an outfit for him and he'll wear the cutest shit.
Pink shirt, white jeans, kawaii uwu hat, just an entire pink aesthetic will be his jam for the entire day.
He likes anything sweet, so he'll eat any Japanese snacks you throw his way.
He also doesn't mind sushi, and he loves anything with chicken in it. Especially if it's spicy.
He'll eat a full ball of wasabi for 5 bucks.
Toby
He thinks it's so cool!
He only watches some anime, he's more into movies bc he has such a short attention span.
Other than that he doesn't know much about Japanese culture.
Except that's it's cute as all heck.
He doesn't know how to save his money, so he's always adding stuff to your collection as little presents.
And maybe some things for himself to match.
He loves the candy, though.
And other tasty Japanese snacks.
Pocky and seaweed chips?
Yes please!~
He will love sushi after you introduce it to him!
And he'll get a hang of chopsticks through his tics.
He likes tea, so he's willing to make some for the both of you.
Aka failing terribly and having you make it instead.
Or just buy it from a nearby shop.
Jeff
He'll steal all of your Japanese snacks that you've ordered.
And maybe some plushies.
He thinks the pocky game is dumb, but he lowkey wants to play it.
He doesn't know how to play tho.
And he just wants to kiss you so this dumbass just fucking deepthroats it and CHOKEs.
He doesn't know how to use chopsticks, and frankly, he's too stubborn to try.
This heathen watches dubbed anime and if the anime doesn't have a dub, he isn't watching it.
He doesn't like tea, so you don't have to worry about him drinking any of it.
But he'll take the 'bubbles' out when you're done, freeze them, and keep them in his pocket to throw them at people.
He's just an asshole like that.
But he likes all of the Japanese clothes and merch.
But he won't eat sushi, he doesn't like fish in general. (Except for basics like crab, lobster and shrimp). And he’ll scream if you offer him fish eggs.
BEN
He's a McFreakin weeb.
He's watches way too much anime and eats too many pocky sticks.
His favorite is strawberry and green tea.
So when you come into his life he just has to fangirl about everything you do and own.
He can speak some Japanese, but not a lot.
Everything he's learned has been from anime.
And hentai
He wears a lot of Japanese clothing too, even if it's just bs aesthetic stuff that says "Cool guy" in Japanese.
And like, anime action figures and basic merch.
BEN can pretend that he knows what he's doing with chopsticks.
But he can't eat stuff like rice or anything small that he has to pick up.
He's the kind of guy that stabs the piece of meat to eat it with the chopstick.
He'll take a drink of your bubble tea, find a way to get one of the 'bubbles' in his mouth and then proceed to spitball it as a very dangerous projectile at your butt.
Also, if you want to piss off Jeff just have a conversation in full Japanese.
More like, you speak all of the Japanese and BEN only knows like 12 full sentences and keeps repeating them in different tones.

I have been wanting to make Ramen for awhile and with the cold weather here in St. Paul, it was perfect for a bowl of Ramen. I was reading about Ramen making and what I got out of it was, if you make your broth really good then the rest is just additional garnishes. There are so many ways and so many kinds of Ramen broth, it’s unbelievable!
Basically, to have a very good and tasty broth you would need to make your stock from pork, beef, and or even chicken bones, Throw some aromatics and allow it to simmer for long hours then after that, strain the stock and us the broth to add other seasonings such as soy sauce, soybean paste, mirin, rice vinegar to add that depth of flavor. I actually made a batch of it using pork neck bones and it was very tasty!
It was time consuming and it’s good if you want to have the broth made this way. However, I have prepared another Ramen dish which the broth was quick and it only took more or less an hour to prepare. I’d have to say, it was just as tasty as using the pork bone, and it was so much faster to prepare. Just make sure you follow the recipe and make the meat paste. You can use any type of meat of your choice. Hopefully, this is helpful and find it easy to make!
Instant Ramen Soup
Water Pot for broth:
Ingredients
5 Quarts of water
1 whole yellow onion, halves
1 whole leek, clean good and greens included
2 inches ginger root, cut in 3 pieces
2 pouches dried shaved Bonito (the Bonito’s I bought came shaved and I used 2 disposable tea bags)
Procedures
1. Put all the ingredients together in the pot of water and bring to simmer and on low heat, while you get the other ingredients ready.
Other ingredients to garnish your Ramen Soup with:
Soybean paste
Soy sauce, seasoning
Rice vinegar, seasoning
Mirin
Baby Bok Choy
Scallions, thinly sliced or Garlic Chives
Spinach
Fish cakes, halves
Imitation crabs
Bean sprouts
Fish balls, halves
Pork Meatloaf with Tendons (Vietnamese Kind), halves and thinly sliced the 2 halves.
Fried Onion
Cooked eggs
Garlic Cloves
Dried or fresh Ramen noodles
Other meat of your choice or vegetables
Meat Paste
Ingredients
8 oz ground pork
8 oz ground chicken thigh meat (breast is too lean)
1 apple, peeled, corded and finely chopped
1 leek, white part only, finely chopped
½ yellow onion, finely chopped
3 celery stalks, cleaned and finely chopped
2 medium carrots, peeled, and finely chopped
½ small Daikon, peeled, finely chopped
3 Tbsp Duck fat, bacon drippings or vegetable oil ( I used Duck fat)
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
Procedures
1. Heat the duck fat, or vegetable oil in a saucepan for 1 minutes. Cook all the finely chopped ingredients for 3-5 minutes or until it is softened and liquid is evaporated. Add the ground meats and cook until meat is cooked and liquid has evaporated.
2. In a food processor, place all the cooked ingredients and process until it has become a paste. remove to a small bowl for adding into the broth later.
3. Get the other ingredients ready: boil a pot of water for cooking the noodles, and boil another pot of water to blanch the vegetables like bean sprouts and baby Bok Choy, etc…
4. To assemble the Ramen Noodle: cook the noodle according to the instructions on the packet.
5. In a small pot, ladle 2 cups of the broth, just enough for one serving, or the number of servings you want and heat on low. Add in 2 Tbsp soybean paste, and a good amount of the meat paste (3 Tbsp meat paste per 1 cup of broth), 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce, 1 Tbsp rice vinegar.
6. On the one pot, cook your noodles, just until “al dente”, and remove. Place it in serving bowl. Add the broth over it. Use chopsticks to move the noodles around the noodles to help it from sticking.
7. On the other pot, blanch your greens: baby Bok Choy, bean sprouts just until it turns bright green. You can also blanch the fish balls, fish cakes for 1 minutes or until it is hot. Arrange the toppings in your bowl and finish it off with fried onions and some grated fresh garlic, an egg cut in half, and grated garlic with a micro blade to finish it off.
