Like the traditional PIR sensor, RCWL-0516 is a widely popular sensor that also detects movements and is used in Alarms or for security purposes. This sensor uses a “microwave Doppler radar” technique to detect moving objects within its range. It has a sensitivity range of ~7 meters and that is very useful for multiple applications.

OPT4048 - a "tri-stimulus" light sensor 🔴🟢🔵
We were chatting in the forums with someone when the OPT4048 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/OPT4048DTSR/21298553) came up. It's an interesting light sensor that does color sensing but with diodes matched to the CIE XYZ color space. This would make them particularly good for color-light tuning. We made a cute breakout for this board. Fun fact: it's 3.3V power but 5V logic friendly.

High-tech sticker can identify real human emotions
Saying one thing while feeling another is part of being human, but bottling up emotions can have serious psychological consequences, such as anxiety or panic attacks. To help health care providers tell the difference, a team led by scientists at Penn State has created a stretchable, rechargeable sticker that can detect real emotions—by measuring things like skin temperature and heart rateeven when users put on a brave face. The researchers recently unveiled the wearable patch that can simultaneously and accurately track multiple emotional signals in a study published in the journal Nano Letters. "This is a new and improved way to understand our emotions by looking at multiple body signals at once," said Huanyu "Larry" Cheng, the James L. Henderson, Jr. Memorial Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State and lead author of the paper.

Prototype time!
My first project in 2025. It was nice trip down memory lane, returning to 8bit micro controller. I am still trying to get the hang of the printing setup and new filament so the printing is pretty poor on this one.

TCS34303 - tri-stimulus color sensor 🔧🌈📸
This weekend, we whipped up a Stemma QT breakout board for the TCS34303 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ams-osram-usa-inc/TCS34303-OLGA8-LF-T-RDP/7428283) a 'tri-stimulus' color sensor. Most color sensors we've stocked have a red/green/blue/clear diode. This sensor can provide CIE 1931 XYZ output, useful for color correction, or photo/videography. To make it like our old TCS34725 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1334), we added a white neutral LED. Since it has a 1.8V sensor, we had to add a lot of level shifting to make it compatible with 3 or 5V power and logic. Coming soon.

MIT engineers have developed a technique to grow and peel ultrathin "skins" of electronic material. The method could pave the way for new classes of electronic devices, such as ultrathin wearable sensors, flexible transistors and computing elements, and highly sensitive and compact imaging devices. As a demonstration, the team fabricated a thin membrane of pyroelectric material -- a class of heat-sensing material that produces an electric current in response to changes in temperature. The thinner the pyroelectric material, the better it is at sensing subtle thermal variations. With their new method, the team fabricated the thinnest pyroelectric membrane yet, measuring 10 nanometers thick, and demonstrated that the film is highly sensitive to heat and radiation across the far-infrared spectrum.
