Sometimes it's interesting to be a firm agnostic but also to feel a strong attraction to the concept of the sacred and/or mystical. I'm not sure attraction is even the right word—but art that leans into a sense of sanctity or mysticism is intensely appealing to me in a very fundamental way, especially when coupled with a sense of grandeur or glory. And ritual, I love a good religious ritual.

My family's religious background is Mormon, Catholic, and Greek Orthodox, so it's not really surprising. But it's like, despite the standard religious damage, and despite being deeply skeptical of anything smacking of the supernatural, I love entering the headspace of characters with a strong religious sensibility, I love visual art caught up in the sacred, I love fiction that can give you a sense of the mystical in ritual, I love when I'm expected to believe there's something sanctified in a building or relic or rock (real or not), I love visual or narrative art that can truly evoke a sense of the divine.

At the same time, I don't believe it. Nor do I wholly disbelieve it, I'm just like ... eh, idk, this is not in the realm of knowable information. But damn do I feel the appeal of religious conviction.

(This whole train of thought got started because I was thinking about how much I love playing clerics, lol. Anyway)

Hello everyone! I have begun work on a new fanfiction WIP (for the Bleach fandom, naturally) and I'm very excited with how it's turning out. I expect to have the first chapter out very soon! I'm trying my hand at making an AU and so far am pleased with the results.

The fic's title is Elenion Umbar, which is Quenya Elvish for 'Fate of the Stars.'

~Summary:

Between struggling to control his wildly unpredictable powers, putting on a smile for his sisters even when he doesn’t feel particularly happy, and dealing with the typical teenage problem of (probably) unrequited love, Ichigo’s life is far from perfect. But he’s used to it, every day close enough to the last that lets him know where he stands with the world.

Until he gets a single piece of news that sends his entire life into shambles, threatening to change his world irrevocably.

He inherited his mother’s curse. ~

This is going to be a fairly angsty story as we follow Ichigo struggling to come to terms with who he really is versus who he always thought he was, but also somewhat of a coming-of-age tale for the same reasons. It takes place in a world where a small percentage of the population possesses abilities, and certain curses can be etched into family bloodlines for generations. The curse that Ichigo has inherited is a transformative one, meaning that the clock is ticking on his time as an ordinary human with no real idea what he will end up looking like on the other side. The change isn't going to come all at once: instead it takes its time, slowly but surely changing the afflicted from their human selves into something other. It is more than unpleasant news for someone to receive in this world, and Ichigo is no exception.

The first five chapter titles will be: -Riven -Valetudinarian -Halcyon -Luminescence -Vertigo

hey, sorry for randomly sliding into your inbox but! i just wanted to tell you that i'm about to start act 3 of bg3, would've started it sooner but i didn't get to play for a couple weeks as i was waiting to be able to upgrade my hard drive. and over the course of playing i've ended up changing several details of my tav's backstory as well as really fleshing out their character and getting into the roleplay, and i'm so attached to them by now that i almost don't want to finish my playthrough lol. i'm thinking of starting a gale origin playthrough once i do finish just so i can see more of tara. and i noticed that you're close to finishing the game as well! can i ask how birdie's adventure is going?

I am INCREDIBLY close to finishing the game. Like, about to go to the Nether Brain for the final battle close.

I've been putting it off FOR WEEKS because I'm so incredibly attached to Birdie and the companions and their relationships to each other and I don't want it to end!!

Since last we spoke, Birdie and the gang had just done the Iron Throne mission (breaking people out of jail). She decided NOT to go confront the other Wave Servants; that chapter in her life has closed. I won't spoil more of Act 3 since you're just getting into it, but I did I think maybe three other Big Plot Things and now it's time to actually do the damn thing and beat the game.

I'm a little nervous about some of the endings I may have gotten for myself (I'm concerned I may have accidentally condemned Gale to godhood) and I know there are some things I missed, purely because it was my first playthrough and I didn't know any better (I didn't get to know Rolan, didn't save Minthara, didn't get the Githyanki egg, etc), but I'm honestly excited for the epilogue sequence. Is it mostly because of happy/soft Astarion? YES! I LOVE THAT GUY! SUE ME!

My roommate and I have been playing the game at pretty much the same pace this whole time, so I'm about to watch HER beat the game this Friday. She's playing as a Gloom Stalker Ranger named "Sevyn" (yes, like the number 😂) who's romancing Gale, but we've made relatively similar choices throughout the whole thing.

I'm not too worried about spoilers since I know a lot of the outcomes, I just don't know how it happens or what the final battle looks like. But like I explained in my previous Birdie post, I like to look things up beforehand/during certain events because I like having help. Similarly, I love watching my roommate play and learning from/with her so I don't feel as in the dark when it's my turn. Granted, I played a lot without her during Acts 1, 2 and 3, but since we're getting to the end, I've slowed WAY down and have let her go first with most big things. It's not for everyone, but it's how I like to play!

I'm so attached to Birdie and this save file that I'm thinking of creating an entirely new account on my PS5 just to start a new game so that I don't have to save over previous Birdie saves.

Like, what if in a new patch, they add a new scene to Astarion's plot line? A new action (hug/kiss)? New camp idle animations? I want to be able to go in with Birdie and do those things, should they ever come up. Yes I COULD romance Astarion again (and probably will because I'm a weak woman) but as you said about your Tav and I've been saying about mine, I'm really attached to Birdie and I'm invested in who she is and how she fits into the world of BG3.

ALSO! Apparently they're adding mods at some point to the PS5 version? It's been taking everything in me not to buy it on my computer just for some of the mods even though I LOATHE sitting at my desk for hours on end. If mods come into play, I'll definitely want to see what kind of fun things I can make happen for Birdie and the gang. Additionally, one of my friends told me that people modded Skyrim to the point where they were adding new plot points and quest lines? If that happens, and they add like some sort of masquerade ball or event where I can dress up like a princess? You bet you're ass I'm going back to Birdie to let her do that 😂 I'd want to play new paths with Birdie in general, but I'm a sucker for a royal ball sequence 🥸

So basically, Birdie's story in Baldur's Gate may be coming to an end fairly soon. I don't know exactly when yet, but I've been having a blast and can't wait to play the game again and again and again. Right now that's hard to imagine, but I know I'll pick it up with a new Tav eventually because it's such a good game and you can't help falling in love with the world and the writing and the characters. I shall grieve the loss of this particular story, but I plan on keeping Birdie around for as long as I can.

Boromir snippet/short fic suggestions?

Can anyone give me a prompt for a Boromir & Enna & Elenion snippet/short fic that doesn't involve funerals and or Enna being heartbroken?

Since I'm going to re-write my WIP The Lady of Ithilien, I thought of turning it into a Boromir! Lives AU.

Faramir and Enna have a lot of in-dream/mental conversations with the deceased Captain of the White Tower (and by a lot, I mean A LOT) so it occurred to me that maybe I should simply...bring him back to life. The thing is, I need to carve out a role for him in a fic which has its own established setting already. I have never written Boromir before, but the way I see it, he's a protector. He wants to protect the people he cares about and, since Enna and Faramir fall out with one another later on in my fic, I suspect Boromir will step up and take care of her as a father would. I also think he'd grow extremely fond of her children, especially the girls and Elenion, my newest addition to the family. He has Enna's personality and Eönwë's extreme sensitivity, but he lacks their mental fortitude. He's profoundly depressed and engages in self-harm as a way to cope with his pain (you can find a very brief snippet about him HERE - it's just a little scene about him and Mírion interacting. Mírion is such a loving big brother and I love him so much. Actually, I love them both so much, they're both among my favorite Elenwë children).

I can sort of imagine Boromir trying to bond with him as I think he would try and cheer him up somehow. That would be the main bulk of a possible Boromir snippet, but having never written him before, I don't really know if it's something he would do. Since I'm 90% set on including him in LOI in some capacity, I think I'll write him as the uncle who leaves far away and gets to see his family maybe once a year on special occasions (weddings, funerals and the likes).

Maybe he visits Emyn Arnen to check on Enna (Faramir is extremely worried about her and asks him to go because he cannot do it himself) and notices young, sweet Elenion crying all alone and tries to comfort him? That's an idea I just came up with, but I'm honestly not sure whether Boromir is the kind of guy to walk up to a child he's barely met. I don't know him that well (yet).

That's one prompt. Another I thought of was having Boromir comfort Enna after Elenion's funeral. But it's yet another sad story and I would like to try and write something different. Something hopeful 😂

THE EUROPA CLIPPER LAUNCHED THIS MORNING, AND I AM SO NOT NORMAL ABOUT IT!!!!!

Space is so fucking awesome. We're headed to one of JUPITER'S MOONS!

Every time a launch happens, it makes the latent space enthusiast in the back of my brain jump up and down. It also derailed all my plans for today. I did have plans.

Instead, someone made one comment about how I could now maybe make mission patches on my embroidery machine, and the space thing crossed over with my current hyperfixation (silm) to produce THIS:

Design and linguistics details under the cut, because I put WAY too much thought into it and now must talk SOMEONE's ear off about it. Feel free to ignore this bit:

So, to start: Elvish NASA. I chose to call them Vardildi Elengolmo Vilciryamoyë, or VEV. The Followers of Varda, Astronomers and Astronauts. This could very much be totally wrong. Vardildi is Varda+the suffix used in Yavannildi, the followers of Yavanna. Elengolmo comes from the coined word for astronomer, Elengolmë (star-lore), with the -o suffix from nolmo, wise person. Vilciryamoyë takes the vil- from the root of vilya, meaning air, sky. ciryamo is mariner, and yë is the suffix added to the second word meaning 'and'. (I may be very, VERY wrong on this! If anyone has better ideas, I very much welcome input/guidance/constructive criticism)

So I stuck the tengwar for this on either side of the patch. (None of the tengwar is all that legible, though, I'm working on getting that sorted out) Most NASA mission patches don't actually have NASA on them, but I put it on anyway. Here is the tengwar and the start of a logo I made an attempt at (the tehta is supposed to be a shooting star, but that did NOT come through clearly in the embroidery [because it's tiny]):

Most NASA patches (from research I did with great self-restraint here) have the (last) names of the astronauts. Not sure if they also have the name of the craft or if that's generally somewhere else, but I put both--Eärendil Ardamírë (his fathername and mothername) are the tengwar at the bottom of the patch, and Vingilotë is written on the keel of the ship. None of these are legible because they are small, and my machine has limits. It's a work in progress. Also I apologize for the bad lighting in the photo.

NASA patches sometimes also have a mission motto. That's the tengwar across the top of the patch here-- aiya Eärendil elenion ancalima, Hail Eärendil, brightest of stars (a common cry among elves and Frodo [when facing Shelob]).

(I half wanted to do something a bit more funny--maybe something like 'Now I have become Venus,' or 'Do I get to come down?' but this was a bit easier since it comes pre-translated into Quenya and tengwar, and also I have no faith in my Quenya translations that are any longer than a word)

The horizon is flat because Númenor exists, in the middle there between the shore of Middle-Earth and a teensy bit of Valinor and the Enchanted Isles.

The design for the Silmaril is sort of taken from the heraldic device Tolkien designed for the Silmarilli (though it isn't clear), and it is rayed with the six-pointed star from Eärendil's device. (I stuck the moon phases from the same source around the edges as well)

This was really fun, even if it might be the silliest thing I've ever made! It definitely needs some workshopping--i don't mind the black lines framing some sections from the background fabric, but I might try turning all the tengwar into lines of stitches instead-the satin columns really are illegible.

I now need to restrain myself from doing some sort of NASA/Astronaut Earendil AU, because it now sounds kind of fun (I do not have the background knowledge for this)
