First of all: ESKEERRR!!!! I love theeemmmm!!!!! That's my favorite space cowboy!!!! You have such a pretty style to look at <333 it's not super often I see traditional colored pencil drawings on here and you've made Esker look so so so nice <3333 I keep trying to draw them but I'm SO BAD at drawing cowboy hats :') you've done an incredible job here!!!! And the angle of the face is really nice too!! I've personally been struggling with more dynamic angles, so I personally admire your ability to do so as well as you have!! Beautiful art, incredibly done my friend!!

Second! I have some digital tips for you!!

I will be first to admit, my exact process is a bit unorthodox, but I feel you may still find some use in it!

See, I'm not actually great at sketching in a digital format, and never really have been. I enjoy coloring digitally and doing line art digitally due to the freedom and forgiveness of digital art- but sketching has never quite worked out for me.

So instead what I do is I do all my sketches traditionally!! All of them :)

And then I try and take clean pictures of my sketches or scan them in, import the picture of the sketch into whatever drawing application you use (I use ibis paint on my phone, but that's a whole other can of worms lol) and from there you can either start line art over the sketch, or you can just go straight to putting down color under the sketch by using a multiply layer for your sketch!

Here are some recent digital works of mine to show you how it can work under the cut! (I really hope I'm not being too forward here or anything btw ;-;

Here are examples of line art I've done over sketches recently! The first one being traditional line art over the sketch as is, the second being digital line art over traditional line art (that's why it looks cleaner) and the third being an example of where I fixed some anatomy during the digital process!

Here are examples of just putting down color underneath the sketch using a multiply layer! The second picture (the clown) and the third (woman with gold horns) are ones I did yesterday, and the clown picture looks way more rough than the bird boy or the other two because I was actually just color testing, not actually wanting to make a finished picture!

These are just some plain line art pictures, so you can see the clean result of doing digital line art over traditional sketches!

And lastly, just one totally completed artwork kinda for fun :3 My style is much different than yours, and I tend to portray a heavily textured, semi-lineless style, which I know is not exactly a common style 💀 but just in case it helps you visualize the end product and help you with thinking of other possibilities, you know?

When I VERY first started doing digital art, I think I was like 14-15 years old? I wasn't very good at art period, and I STRUGGLED transitioning to Digital, and gave it up for a long time. And then I sorta discovered I could import my sketches, and it was a total game changer!! I've been doing digital art this way for nearly 6 years now, and while my style and process has grown and changed significantly in those 6 years, this part of my process has always stayed the same.

And maybe doing this will only be a stepping stone into being able to sketch digitally for you, just a little transitional helping hand- but art has no rules. Remember that! Art has no rules and if you find something that helps you and that you think looks nice and is functional, then DO IT!!! I've been doing digital pieces on my phone for YEARS, and as much as people tell me I should really start using an art tablet or something else, I've found that this method works for me, and I see no urgent need to change that! (Also I'm really lazy and don't want to learn how to use a new program- but that's besides the point lol)

Switching mediums is always gonna be tough at first, and it'll probably take you a little while before you really get a grip on it- but being a traditional artist isn't a downgrade, and I feel that's very important to know. You have AMAZING skill, and I ADORE your colored pencil work on this drawing of Esker!!! Just because it's not "popular' online, doesn't mean it's worse. Traditional art does and will always have a place in the world- INCLUDING fandom spaces! I find that some of my favorite pieces of fan art have been traditional pieces, so don't sell yourself short my friend!

I wish I could share some of my traditional pieces I've done to try and help encourage that, but ah, I've run out of images I can post :')

Traditional doodle of Esker this time. Yk my favourite traveller used to be Riebeck, but recently it's swapped over to Esker. They are one of the founders, but they aren't in the founders photo, and being forgotten on the alterrock, they deserve love and I love them.

I'm struggling. So. Fucking. Hard. To transition into digital. Had a full day yesterday to doodle and everytime I tried I wanted to rip my hair out. I feel like I've also regressed in my traditional art as well, which is uurauagauagah.

So, I'm listening to TMA (ep 93) and well, the whole "You are tied to the Institute, and the Institute is tied to me" revelation from The Rat Bastard (Elias) happened recently And I'm just getting into the lore, I don't know shit, so when I had a silly idea, I asked my friend: "Hey, Elias is the heart of the Institute or whatever he is , will it hurt him if you kick shelves or slam the door on purpose?"

They said no (sad), but that doesn't stop from thinking about a crack fic like this? Like:

Elias, with a slightly twitching eye: everyone stop. Immediately. Melanie, scribbling on the table with a knife: stop what? Daisy, methodically breaking the corner of the baseboard with her heel: don't know what you're talking about Basira, forcefully throwing a tennis ball at the wall: we're just having our lunch break Martin, stumbling and spilling boiling water on the floor (again): Yeah, I was going to make us some tea.… Elias: I would advise you to come to your senses and- Tim, actually returning from lunch and slamming the door so hard that plaster falls from the ceiling: hi everyone! Elias: Murderous eldritch screeching

also I like the headcanon that Jon has a cane. So in this lil au I imagine him taking his cane, walking around the Archives and hitting the shelves with it, whe he's particularly annoyed by Elias

Elias Tsum!

I put him off for a while because I didn't want to draw the ignihyde uniform, but he's here! I figured since tsum Ortho couldn't fly, tsum Elias wouldn't have Elias's cool prosthetic arm, and like tsum Ortho would get some cool technomantic upgrades while at Night Raven. (Story under cut)

Upon noticing the lights in the sky, and more importantly the hunter in a tree with binoculars already aimed at them, Elias swiftly activated his unique magic to get a quite literal birds eye view. He watched the scene through the eyes of a bird, fluttering around between the small round creatures falling from the sky. When he spotted one with familiar scruffy hair covering its face. He flew closer, this creature really did resemble him to a bizarre extent... as he fluttered around it, an arrow shot up from the nearby copse of trees. Just as Elias was realizing who shot it, the enchantment on the arrow activated, and rather than piercing the tsum, it transformed into a bubble around both the small creatures. Elias had seen enough.

Deactivating his magic, Elias rushed outside. On his way he tripped no less than three times, but he made it.

Elias! I do believe I've just encountered your tsum lookalike!" Rook said cheerfully.

This was a good chance to test a new feature Idia had added to his arm. Elias pointed and shot a tiny technomantic beam at the bubble, breaking it so the tsum and innocent bird could go free. It was barely a fraction of what Ortho could do, but only a fraction of him was robotic compared to Ortho, and hey, it was still pretty cool.

The tsum dropped down and stood at Elias's feet looking up into the tree where Rook was.

Rook was unphased "is that a new feature? Magnifique!"

"Yeah, it is" it was meant to help him be an even better hunter, but after having Rook catch his tsum before him, he didn't feel worthy of claiming it was working quite yet.

"Also!" Rook continued "I noticed les chats espiégles had a tsum companion aiding them in tripping you on the way here, I do believe we are due for some trouble while the tsums are around."

Rook had seen that? This was humiliating. "Yeah whatever" Elias said, picking up his tsum and returning to the main building, not looking back at Rook.

Once inside he noticed the new message he'd gotten, the headmaster was calling all those who caught a tsum to his office. He sighed and looked at the tsum in his hands.

The little creature was hard to read with its hair in its face, but Elias did notice something about it. While the tsums he'd seen before all had four nubbins as their appendages, this tsum was missing the front right one. Well, Elias had his first project in mind for once the meeting with Crowley was over. He was going to make this guy a prosthetic nubbin. (Or more likely convince Idia to do it for him, but eh, same result.)

Names can be weapons and Elias is well versed in using them against people. Like my cool mutual @rosalineandrosemary pointed out Melanie doesn't like Elias calling her by her first name and Basira isn't comfortable with being called Detective. He calls Jon the Archivist in the birthday tape because it's a way of telling Jon this was always meant to happen, this was always who he was meant to become

Except, this is the only time Elias calls Jon the Archivist when talking to him. Every time else it's his first name (he says Jon's name more than anyone else's btw). I think it's because he views Jon to be on the same level as him ("the world WE made") and for Elias he is always the person before he is an avatar of the Beholding. And the same applies to Jon

Anyway, what I am trying to say is that it's important to me that Elias calls Jon by his first name at all times

I have a lot of Thoughts about the issue of Jon's humanity. There's a lot made of how he's not human anymore in seasons 3 and 4, before and after the coma, and I could debate the usefulness of "human" as a term for morality and connectedness all day, but that's not the point. Regardless of the presentation, some sort of disconnect between him and the others is definitely there. By mid- season 4 he is fully leaning into feeding on the fears of others, into being something more of the horrors he knows than of the people around him, and that's not a shift that came from nothing. However. My hot take is this: I think Jon's disconnect both exists, and is also entirely for human reasons.

Up until season 4 Jon is three things. He is confused, afraid, and wildly out of his depth. His arc is a constant scramble to figure out what's going on three steps behind the curve, getting in too deep before he even knows what he's getting into, losing people before he even fully nails down what he lost them to. Tim sees him as uncaring because he's isolated and not acting to help matters, but that's because he doesn't know enough to help, and he's leaning hard into figuring that out instead of being around for emotional support - which is...debatably the wrong approach, but also extremely in character. One of the only things he took initiative on was smashing that table, and we all know how that turned out. By season 3, he's antsy enough with how little he knows and how little he can do that he shows up on Jude Perry's doorstep in the hopes that she'll be merciful. Point being: this man doesn't have the first clue what he's been pulled into, and the game he's been playing is nothing more than trying desperately to figure it out just in time for the next big thing to go less devastatingly wrong.

Then he dies.

Then, he wakes up feeling on top of it.

He says in the episodes after the coma that he feels revitalized. He feels in control. He finally feels like he fits with all of this. He is more of what's happening around him than he is a victim now, and that feels good. He can escape the coffin, he can square up with Jarod, he is self-assured and has tools of his own to truly know things for the first time in years. Just imagine that for a second. Imagine the most uncertain, most uneasy, most fearful time in your life, stretched over years feeling like people you know (or you!) (or the whole world!) are going to die if you can't solve a puzzle you don't even know the shape of it yet, and then somebody takes off your blindfold. You don't have to feel around for the pieces anymore. You can just see them, and move them.

Of course you're going to reach for them. Of course you're going to take the first sense of real control you've felt in years and lean into it. ...Maybe, depending on who you are and whether you have anyone around you who's willing to check you, even if you break a few eggs to make an omelette along the way. Even if those eggs are people who see you in their sleep and wake up screaming. Especially if you've spent those last few years absorbing every minute of your predecessor's recorded words on the importance of being ruthless in order to save the world.

Jon didn't start leaning into his abilities regardless of the cost because he's a monster. Jon did that because he's human, and scared, and then handed a means of relieving that fear. Better to be a wolf than a sheep. Better still, if you can convince yourself (with the help of some Classic Elias Manipulation) that it's for the good of the world, and any harm caused and the discomfort it causes you is a sacrifice that needs to be made. Jon makes sense, to me. In my mind he doesn't need to be a monster in some ambiguously defined sense to explain his shift in attitude. The explanation is there in full: a man in a rowboat on a turbulent ocean of fear, now given a motor.

(The fact that he was so consistently called a monster by Basira, one of his few points of contact still remaining in Peter Lukas's Lonely-flavoured Institute, also certainly didn't help his leaning into it at all, but that's probably an essay for another day. Confirmation bias is a hell of a thing, and I'm sure being made to think he had no other options made it all the more easy to tell himself the same.)

This is Ezekiel H Sinclair (though he goes by Zeke for short). He’s an Avatar of the Eye and is essentially a human lie detector. He works as an investigator for the Institute and was hired around the same time John was.

Elias has taken quite a liking to him. Let’s hope nothing bad happens.
