Welcome to my Meet Cute where Jason is a hopeless romantic whose inner voice is essentially a Jane Austen novel. Part 2
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47612662/chapters/120254056
just a little fun fact. I am totally head cannon Jason looking like his Gotham Knights model, mostly I think it's funnier. Totally not because it made my Redhood crush a little more intense......
“Danny I still can’t believe you literally made it sound like I have a kink for criminals to a Wanye of all people, a hot one at that!” Jazz whined to Danny as Danny, Sam, Kitty, and her were sitting around looking for a cheap condo for sale in Gotham. They were all going to be there through Danny's Ph.D. and whatever remains of Jazz's master’s program, possibly even her doctorate. So that was at least ten years. They had made the excuse to their parents about equity, but realistically they wanted to be able to rogue proof the place. They were going to Gotham after all.
“Jazz, you wouldn’t have liked him, he’s some spoiled rich socialite,” Danny argued.
“Did you see his muscles under his suit, I know you could!” Jazz gushed, Kitty and Sam started to giggle, knowing Danny a little too well.
“One, I would never look at another Man, Johnny is the jealous type, and Two, those were totally dumb gym bro muscles. You need someone who can fight. Not someone you could beat in a fight.” Danny said both contradicting himself and drawing attention to the fact that the Fenton siblings' prolonged and extensive exposure to ectoplasm had changed them significantly. Danny being half ghost obviously was the most changed. However, Jazz’s changes were more subtle. Fangs, eyes a little greener, a little stronger, and a little faster. While the physical changes were the most outwardly obvious, it was the mental changes that were the most significant.
Jazz’s need to analyze and understand people was border lining on an obsession. Both siblings were protective of their family unit. Which encompassed their parents, Tucker, and all of Danny’s partners. This included Sam Danny's high school sweetheart, Ember who both Danny and Sam held a hidden flame, Kitty, who was dating Danny, Johnny, and Ember, and Johnny who was dating Kitty and Danny. The unit also included Danny's clone daughter Danielle “Elle” Phantom who is obsessed with exploration and often roamed the earth in search of the next cool place or people she could meet. She would often send postcards.
Danny and Jazz were both territorial, nobody entered their haunt without permission. Neither would admit it, but this is also the reason they were looking at buying. It was bad enough that they would have to share the building with strangers, but to be beholden to a landlord. That was unacceptable. Their haunt was theirs. They were also more combative. Both as a way of protecting, but also as a way of socializing. Jazz was already looking forward to seeing what the Gotham MMA gyms were like.
“Danny, you can’t just scare off any potential boyfriends.”
“I never even tried to scare him. I just informed him that you clearly have a type!”
“Danny!” Jazz sighed
“Jazz!” Danny exclaimed. His sister sighed again trying to redirect the conversation to the task at hand. “Okay let's go over what our requirements are again.” She said,
“A closet we can turn into a semi-permanent ghost portal,” Danny said,
“The ability to install our own security system and a place for my garden,” Sam added.
“And a way to soundproof the bedrooms,” Kitty added with a bit more enthusiasm than expected. Danny and Sam blushed as Jazz groaned not wanting to be reminded that her little brother somehow had a more productive sex life than her.
“What? Ember is rather loud.” Danny and Sam nodded sagely at Kitty’s comment.
“And when Danny is with Johnny even I need ear plugs, I mean I totally get it, Johnny is a man who can really…” Kitty was cut off by Jazz who found something that may be perfect for the group. She was also thankful for the timing of her find. Jazz asked the group to hear her out on her Idea.
“Danny, our parents made us 12.5% owners each in Fenton works right?” Danny nodded his confirmation.
“Okay, I think we should expand Fenton works and found the anthropological branch which would be headquartered in Gotham!” Jazz looked out to see three confused faces.
“There’s this warehouse in between the Bowery, Park Row and Robinson park. It’s perfect, close to the only real hub of nature in the city for Sam, we can also add a garden to the roof. We can obviously set up whatever security we want and have enough room for all seven of us!”
“Seven?” Sam asked.
“You mean Elle gets her own room when she visits?” Danny asked and responded with a resounding yes,
“And that’s not even the best part. The warehouse, the whole thing, the land it’s on is only three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.” Jazz knew it was technically a little over budget, but between the tax benefits from counting it as a Fenton Works purchase and the fact Danny could grab as many one Kg gold bars from the Keep as he needed, the whole thing was easy to buy and very much worth it.
“Ok, I’m sold, call the realtor,” Danny said, already opening a portal to the ghost zone.

Double Tummy Trouble
@squidbiscuit inspired another cute fic idea of both bois having tummy troubles after eating too much spicy food.  I can’t resist sick burpy bois. :3
Raihan heaved to himself in a sickly fashion.  His breathing was shaky and uneven.  It felt like he was sinking in his own heavy stomach.  He was used to eating too much but it usually wasn’t that excessively spicy.
And eating so much of the extra spicy meats was doing a number on his aching tummy.
Raihan whined.
He was groggily slumped over the side of the bed with one arm wrapped around his stomach.  It was sticking out a little beneath his hoodie and churned noisily.  He lurched a little and puffed out his cheeks, blowing to the side and huffing in a sickly fashion.
Piers entered the bedroom holding his own bulging belly and erupted with a long burp.
HuuuuuuurrrrrrooooooooohrrrAAAAAAAAAAAHP!!!!
Piers huffed heavily with his tongue sticking out in a carelessly lewd fashion.
“Ungh, fuck,” Piers groaned patting his belly hard until he sat himself down on the bed besides Raihan.  He was looking pretty green himself as he huffed again and massaged his aching tummy hard.  “What were ye sayin’?”
Raihan tried to speak but felt a bubble rushing up his throat.  He muffled in a heavy burp by keeping his fist pressed his mouth.  Then he turned his head to blow aside and huff in a sickly manner.  “Ungh, I think something came up with that one...”
He felt another rush of warmth rising up his throat but couldn’t tell if it was a burp or his lunch so he held it in and let it rumble in his mouth so he could blow aside again.  Doing so left him with this sour look on his face.
In contrast Piers thumped his chest and expelled a burp so strong that Raihan could feel their mattress rattle in its wake.  He sighed heavily and leaned back to rub his noisy belly while it churned heavily in his grasp.
Raihan groaned uncomfortably and buried his head into their bed so he could whine pitifully.
“Whyyyyyyy did we do that stupid mukbang with extra spicy meat...?”
Piers’ stomach bubbled noisily.  He cringed and reeled forward with his arms wrapped around his middle.  At first he held a finger up to Raihan while holding another against his mouth.  Then he blew his hand back with a loud guttural belch.  Piers gasped after and thumped his chest to release another throaty burp right after without much pause to catch his breath.
“Haaaahhh...” Piers moaned and lifted his thin shirt up to expose the pale bulging tummy beneath.  Then he rubbed his aching belly firmly with his hand while patting his chest with his palm.  “We did that stupid bollocks ‘cuz ye wanted t’sho-oORrhp!  Ungh, ye wanted t’show off to yer fans, mate.  Same reason we-urp-always do stupid shit...urp...”
Even after some of the bubbles worked their way up his throat Piers could feel another big one coming.  He slumped forward and held his belly with both hands and released a burp so hard and throaty that Piers was left panting when it ended and rubbing his throat with a sour look on his face.
Raihan didn’t bother climbing up on bed.  He just lazily reached up from his slouched position between the floor and the bed and placed his hand against Piers’ tummy, kneading into it as he ran his hand up and down.
Piers huffed and slumped back to make his tummy stick out a little more then rested his hands against the mattress for support.
“G-Gotta give the people what they want...r-right...?” Raihan weakly asked while firmly massaging Piers’ taut bulging stomach.
Piers took a breath and released a huge burp in response.
BWAAAAAAAUUUUUUURRROOOOOOOOORRHP!!!!!!
It was so big that Raihan could feel Piers’ stomach shake a little in its expulsion.  He sighed deeply after and nearly flopped backwards on the mattress with utter relief but only didn’t because Raihan was still massaging his bulging tummy.
“Fffffuckin’‘ell I needed that...” Piers sighed.
Raihan couldn’t help but blush even in his sickly state and groggily looked up at Piers.
“You’re not usually this burpy when we get all grumbly...”
“Better t’be burpy then pukey...” Piers mumbled then grinned.  “Sides, ye know ya like it, ye mental nutter...”  He puffed to the side and gave his belly a few relieved pats even with Raihan still kneading and rubbing into it.
Then Raihan’s own stomach churned and bubbled loudly.
Raihan winced and doubled over in pain.
“OooooOoOOoooohhhhh my stomach...” Raihan whimpered and clenched his eyes shut like he was about to tear up.
Piers looked down at his sickly boyfriend.  In spite of how dodgy his stomach was being the rockstar slid down so he was sitting on the floor and leaning against the bed with Raihan.
“C’mere mate.”
Piers carefully laid Raihan down so his head and shoulders were resting against Piers’ lap.  Then Piers pulled Raihan’s hoodie up and started to rub Raihan’s noisy, aching tummy in firm circles.
Raihan whimpered but groaned a little with a breathy sigh.  He badly needed Piers’ magic touch right now.  So Piers’ fingers dug into Raihan’s tummy and kneaded into it while it burbled heavily even kneading into Raihan’s belly button which caused the young dragon trainer to moan a little more audibly.
“Yer gut sounds extra bubbly mate.  Ye gotta get it out.”
Raihan groaned again
“Mrph too full,” Raihan complained.  “If I burp I might puke...”
“Ye.  And?”
“And I don’t wanna puke...” Raihan replied sharp as he could in his sickly state.  But then his stomach gurgled really noisily and wetly.  He held a hand up over his mouth looking like he was on the verge of throwing up with how much greener his face was getting.
Piers shook his head.
“Relax mate.  Here.”
Piers leaned down so both of his hands could be wrapped around Raihan’s belly.  He grabbed at the center and used his fingers to press down into that burgeoning bubbling tummy.
Raihan winced and brought a fist to his mouth but Piers pushed his hand aside.
“Just let it out, mate,” Piers insisted just as he pushed down a little more.
Raihan whimpered but when the bubbling rose up his throat he couldn’t hold it back even if he wanted to.
BAAAAAAAUUUUUURRRRAAAAAHHHEEEEIIIIILHP!!!!!!!
To Raihan’s shock he himself unleashed a rip-rolling burp that exploded out of his mouth for seven straight seconds.  Piers could feel Raihan’s tummy quiver in his hands as he squeezed the turbulent gas out.
Raihan’s head rolled back into Piers lap while he huffed and panted desperately.
“Hhhhhhaaaaaaahhhh...oh man...” Raihan moaned in a daze and wipe some drool from his chin.  “That’s...so much...AAAAAAAHHHWOOOOOORRRP!!!!”
His thoughts were interrupted when Piers applied some more pressure to Raihan’s belly when he rubbed into it and worked another big wet burp out from his boyfriend.
Piers thumped the side of Raihan’s tummy a few times which made it noisily slosh until a wet burp rolled out of Raihan’s mouth.  Then he pressed down on Raihan’s lower tummy.  Another deep burp rumbled up followed by a lower and softer one soon after that.
“There ya go.  Get it all out,” Piers said and palmed his chest, letting off a burp of his own since his own tummy was still feeling dodgy.
Raihan panted after an especially heavy burp.  Piers felt up Raihan’s engorged stomach to feel for more tension.  When he couldn’t feel any more he grinned in a satisfied manner.  That intense churning had been replaced with a more idle burble.
“Better?” Piers asked.
Raihan hummed with his eyes closed and huffed again.  “...Could you rub my belly a lil bit longer...?  Please...?”
Piers smiled and resumed stroking Raihan’s burgeoning stomach softly up and down in a far more gentle manner.  At points it was a little more sensual when Piers traced his single finger up and down Raihan’s tummy and got him groaning in a more satisfied manner.
He leaned down to plant a kiss on Raihan’s forehead but their bellies churned at the exact same time.
In perfect unison both Piers and Raihan turned their heads to let out these huge rumbling burps.  Piers’ lasted a few seconds longer than Raihan’s.
When it ended Piers slumped back and palmed his belly.
“...Ungh, we ain’t ever doin’ that stupid spicy challenge shit again...” Piers mumbled.
“...BWAAAAAUUUUURRRRUUUUHP!!!!  Unnngh...agreed, mate...agreed...” Raihan muttered after another throaty burp.  But in spite of that he managed a slight grin when he looked up at Piers.  “At least we beat it, right?”
“Considerin’ we both feel like absolute shite, I’mma call it a draw...” Piers complained.
Raihan hiccuped but still managed a small smile.  “Well I feel a little less crappy in your hands, mate.”
Piers rolled his eyes.  “Sappy sod...”
And yet he still leaned down to gently kiss that ‘sappy sod’ so clearly he didn’t mind Raihan’s sappiness too much.
No matter how bad their bellies hurt in that moment, being with one another always dulled the pain just a little bit.
That and they both had pretty extensive experience rubbing an aching tummy after one or the other overdid it.

Blue glasses are not suitable for driving, while yellow sunglass lenses are really good for sharpening up images, but causes more colour distortion. Brown lenses reduce glare sufficiently well, including absorbing the blue frequency of light in the sun's rays, which makes your surroundings seem hazy.
Thankfully, cleaning crystal lenses needs no greater than a mixture of cozy, soapy water and also a lint-free fabric. Permitting sunglasses to soak for 5-10 mins is handy in eliminating any kind of germs that has actually collected on the lens surface. The expression 20/20 is a Snellen fraction, named for Dr. Herman Snellen who developed the visual acuity gauging system in 1862. The top number never alters; it's always 20, which is the range in feet (in the U.S) that the individual is from the eye chart. The bottom number shows how plainly you see things at a range.

In a flashlight, it's much easier to do this task with a mirror, which typically considers much less than a lens and is cheaper to produce too. Our New Berlin lens laboratory is the first in North America to take on environmentally-friendly prescription lens making modern technology. Wisconsin Vision is leading the way in making optical lens production more secure as well as greener with alloy-free lenses. lenses have excellent optical top qualities, are scratch resistant and also normally expense less than plastic.
Progressive lenses have no lines, so if you're seeking a lens without lines, these are for you. They feature the appearance of a single-vision lens as well as permit you to see in all distances. Let's have a look at the distinctions between dynamic and bifocal lenses to help you determine which is best for you.
Why are Oakleys not suitable for driving?
Oakley Collector According to the AS/NZS1067:2003 standard, lenses are banned for use when driving if they provide "very high sunglare reduction", so the ban seems to be based on light transmission levels.
Mirror finishing on sunglass lenses not just looks cool, it can enhance aesthetic convenience in extreme light problems. While absolutely About us Top Specs Opticians Aylesbury can make optical lenses scratch-proof, an anti-scratch finish makes the surface area much harder as well as much more sturdy. Normally, a choice of lenses is offered providing top quality vision at differing functioning distances. Generally, they are available from 1 metre intermediate setups to 4 metres with a very smooth progression to the close to zone over a shorter range making the shift a lot more effective.
What are driving glasses?
Driving glasses reduce glare Sunglasses for driving feature polarized lenses that reduce glare and make it easier to see in bright sunlight. Drivers who have been in accidents often claim that they couldn't see the other car or a pedestrian because of glare reflecting off the road or the sun shining in their eyes.
This efficiently implies that you don't need to acquire two pairs of glasses for 2 various ranges. Call us and we can look at the advantages and disadvantages for you specifically relating to the anti-reflective covering in addition to other choices for your brand-new glasses. Whether you have the finish or otherwise also may affect your future glasses acquiring.
Be-cause they are cost-effective and also readily available in a wide array of designs-- and quickly misplaced-- you may get them by the handful. Yet, you might be better off purchasing a specialist eye examination instead. You can additionally customize the lenses to fit your specific prescription and also preferences. I was asked about my face size, frame shape preferences, preferred shades and also materials, the date of last eye examination as well as whether I wanted sunglasses recommendations.
What is the best color sunglass lens for driving?
Although gray and green lenses have their own benefits, and colorful lenses are fun, copper and amber tints increase contrast, making them the best options for driving. If you're looking for a crisp, clear view, we suggest finding a pair of shades with amber or copper lenses – and extra points if they're polarized.
Right here are our specific single-vision lenses, with the prescriptions they fit. A little section of glasses wearers have prism adjustments on their prescription. We can fill up these for single-vision prescriptions up to 5.00 in any type of base instructions.
Glass lenses are not widely utilized since they are larger and damage even more easily than plastic. a greater refractive index than CR-39 plastic, making the lenses thinner and lighter. Dynamic lenses are coming to be a significantly popular choice over bifocals and trifocals. Progressive lenses right vision at close to, middle as well as far distances with no "change area" or visible divide.
Tumblr media
Some customers may rather gain from choosing another sort of lens. The concept of using man-made lenses rather than eyeglasses dates back to a minimum of the 19th century. Scooped lenses are utilized in things like TV projectors to make light rays expanded into the range.
Avoid over-wearing your contact lenses and also make sure to dispose of and change them as guided by youreye doctor. You can substantially lower the threat of contact lens-related eye infections by appropriately cleaning and also sanitizing your contacts after each use. Use only thecontact lens remedies your ophthalmologist advises, and don't transform brands without very first consulting with your doctor. Contact lenses also increase the danger of eye damages since bacteria as well as various other infection-causing agents can build up on them.
Blupond Night Driving Glasses Yellow Color
If you're not able to review the 4th row from all-time low as well as you go up a row, you have 20/25 vision. On the other hand, if the lower numbers decrease, your vision is superior to the typical 20/20.

punkesweet’s stardew mega-modlist
Tumblr media
howdy doody everyboody! i’ve spent way too much time on stardew valley *cough* 200 hours *cough*, and i thought i’d give back to the community by making a modlist for the mods i use. mostly graphical overhauls and small tweaks here and there, and most of these are pretty popular so you’ve probably already heard of them, but hey it’s whatever. the list starts under the cut! engines/pre-reqs most, if not all, these mods require some combination of these engines to run. i know nothing about coding so i can’t give apt descriptors of exactly what these do or why they’re needed, but they are.
Content Patcher
Custom Critters
Json Assets
SMAPI - SMAPI is the modding API for Stardew, necessary for all modding (besides old xnb mods).
PyTK
quality of life mods that don’t super duper mess with the game, but just slight improvements or changes to the original General
BigSilo - Increases the silo capacity for hay storage to around 200k per silo.
CasksAnywhere - Allows casks to be placed and used anywhere (this can sometimes interact weirdly with other mods that add new locations).
Stack Everything - Allows normally unstackable objects (eg. casks) to be stacked, saving on inventory and storage space.
Starblue Valley - Redoes some of the colouring and filters. Blues are bluer, greens are greener, and the whole game looks a lot less yellow and harsh.
game tweaks things that add mechanics or change/expand gameplay Immersion (i guess?)
catGifts - Misleading title, dogs also have the same effect. Pets will occasionally leave you items.
Climates of Ferngill - Expands the weather system, adding custom weather like fog, as well as tweaking the original weather system.
Happy Birthday - Allows the player to set a birthday for themselves, on which npcs will give them gifts and wish them happy birthday.
Lunar Disturbances - Adds an overhead moon and a lunar cycle to the game, with some parts of the cycle affecting gameplay.
Gameplay
Mizu’s Flowers - Adds more flowers, because let’s be real, it’s frankly homophobic that there are only 8 types in the base game.
More Trees - Adds more trees (and by extension more fruits and wines).
Canon Friendly Dialogue Expansion - More dialogue babey! Ever get tired of hearing the same 4 things over and over? Well be tired no more, you’ll now hear 9 things over and over. Or 1500+ I guess, but who’s counting.
Places/Buildings
Oasis Greenhouse - Expands the greenhouse to have an even grid, as well as adding a basement and location to plant trees.
Slime Hutch Winery - Replaces the (let’s be honest, functionally useless) slime hutch with a winery! It’s customisable so you can have a cool looking bar, or work it in conjunction with CasksAnywhere to have a secondary basement-thing.
Spouse Rooms Redesigned - Redesigns the spouse rooms to be a little more aesthetically pleasing and reflect your spouse more (this does interact weirdly if you change the flooring of your house).
aesthetique™ we all know that the most important part of any game is making it look as good as possible, stardew is no exception. most of these are done by elle aka @junimods, who is a goddess at designing cute stuff. Animals
Elle’s New Barn Animals - Redesigns barn animals to look cuter (customisable).
Elle’s New Coop Animals - Redesigns coop animals to look cuter (customisable).
Elle’s Cat Replacements - Redesigns the cat to look cuter (customisable).
Elle’s Dog ReplacementsI - Redesigns the dog to look cuter (customisable).
Elle’s Critter and Butterfly Replacements - Redesigns the little squirrels that run into trees and butterflies that flap around to be cuter.
Eemie’s Bees - Adds bees! Who doesn’t love bees!
Buildings
Elle’s Seasonal Buildings - Redesigns for alllll the farm buildings, including the house, barns, coops, etc.
Items
Fence - Redesigns wooden fences to be cute little rope/dark wood fences.
Fippsie’s Alternative Lamp Posts - Redesigns lamp posts.
Kawaii HatsI - Replaces all the hats with cuter versions/new hats. Who doesn’t love having bows in their hair.
Yellog’s Wood Craftables - Redesigns all craftable objects (i.e. furnaces, chests, cheese makers, beehives, etc.) to fit one nice aesthetic.
General
Ali’s Flower Grass - Replaces grass with a prettier, greener, flowery-er grass. Probably my favourite mod tbh.
Babies Take After Spouse - Retextures your little chiddlers to look more like your spouses offspring than a random child you definitely didn’t kidnap. Also adds more clothes for your toddlers if you’re into that.
Garden Variety UI - Overhauls UI to look more aesthetically appealing. Customisable by choosing from a variety of colours.
cheatsy doodles most of these aren’t quite cheats because i don’t play that way, but they’re like, cheat adjacent.
AutoAnimalDoors - Animal doors automatically open and close at a set time every morning and night.
CJB Cheats Menu - It’s a cheats menu. Allows you to change movement speed, pause time, instantly grow crops, change heart levels, etc. Cheat menu stuff, y’know.
No Crows - No more pesky crows eating your crops.
No Fence Decay - Removes fence decay.
Tree Transplant - Adds the option to move trees the same way one would move buildings, by visiting the carpenter (instead of having to cut them down and replant).
UI Info Suite - Honestly a must have, even if you do everything else vanilla. Adds functions such as being able to see how long a crop has left to grow by hovering over it, whether or not you’ve interacted with an animal, the ability to check the calendar/community centre from your inventory, keep track of whether you’ve given an npc gifts that week, track npc’s on the map, etc. The best mod everrrrrrr.
and that’s that folks! i also have a handful of harvey dialogue expansions because he is and forever will be the best, but i decided to omit them in order to give this list a more widely applicable experience.

All About the Letter E
Please List! (at least one) Animals I Like: >> Elephants are cool. Foods I Like: >> Egg salad sandwiches (very picky about these, though, won’t eat just any), edamame. I Know Someone Who’s (jobs) >> --- I Wouldn’t Mind Visiting: >> Egypt. Sometimes I Feel: >> Exhausted, effervescent, excited, ennui.
Music I Listen To: >> Earth Wind & Fire, Eddie Vedder, Elle King, Evanescence. Movies I’ve Seen: >> Movies I enjoy that start with E include Eastern Promises, The Equalizer, Errementari: The Blacksmith and the Devil, Escape From New York, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Event Horizon, and eXistenZ. Names I Like: >> ---
And now, onto the random questions!
Do you believe in equality? >> I think that all people should be treated with dignity and respect.
Early to bed or early to rise? >> Early to bed and early to rise.
Are you early or late for appointments? >> I am usually on the early side, particularly because I often have to overcompensate for public transit timetables and such.
Have you ever had an ear infection? >> No.
Do you go see an eye doctor? >> No.
How many earrings do you wear? >> One in each lobe.
Do you care about the environment? How do you help the Earth? >> Sure, I care in an abstract sense. If presented with two options that will produce equal results, but one option is less harmful to the ecology, then I’ll pick that option. I don’t litter, I try not to make a ton of waste (although considering how much pointless packaging everything comes in, it’s a little difficult to avoid), I don’t drive, blah blah blah. But frankly, I think any impact I can make as an individual would be utterly dwarfed by the impact that could be made if just one fucking corporation committed to following greener guidelines.
How often do you exercise? Do you go to a gym or do it on your own? >> I don’t really exercise, I just take walks and do short little exercises around the house when I think about it, and hope for the best.
What are you favorite things to eat? >> Oh, you know, stuff.
Do you know anyone who is pure evil? >> Of course not.
Do you get along with everyone? >> No.
Do you have a certain routine that you go through every day? >> Not really. I mean, well... kind of? Like, I walk in the morning (most mornings), then I eat breakfast (or shower and then eat, depending on the day) while watching an episode of a show, take my CBD, and then after that it’s basically open.
Have you ever felt like you’ve lost everything? >> Sure.
Is there anywhere you’d like to explore? >> Of course.
Elevators or escalators? >> Eh, they both do basically the same thing. What do you do in the evening? >> Watching something, reading, messing around on the internet. Have you ever been evaluated for anything before? >> Sure. What’s the worst you’ve ever done on an exam? >> I’ve sat through an entire midterm (and final) without answering a single question. Are you easily exhausted? >> I don’t think so? I mean, sometimes, but not generally. Do you like visiting exhibits? >> I mean, sometimes, I guess. Have you ever felt exiled? >> That feels like a harsher word than I’d prefer to use for any of my experiences. Have you ever felt like everybody was talking about you? >> Yes. Have you ever entered through an exit sign or exited through an enter sign? >> Yeah. How have humans evolved over time? >> There are entire fields of study dedicated to that, so there’s no way I’m going to be able to give a nice tidy answer here in a survey. Would you ever consider eloping? >> We did consider it. Our wedding was fine, and had some unique moments, but sometimes I wonder if eloping still would have been better in the end. If you could erase one mistake from your past, what would it be? >> Not interested. When’s the last time you’ve used email? How about sending something through the mail in an actual envelope? >> I mean, I check my email daily, but I don’t really send any. I don’t send mail, either, unless it’s for Social Security or something. Do you dye eggs at Easter time? >> No. Is the glass half empty or half full? >> --- Have you ever had elbow macaroni before? >> Yeah. Have you ever fractured or dislocated your elbow? >> Nope. Do you know how long an era or an eon is? >> I’m sure Google does. Do you chew the Extra brand of gum? >> I have, but it’s not a brand I favour. When was the last time someone showed empathy towards you? >> *shrug*??? Did you have an Elf on the Shelf growing up? >> I had never seen them until they became a meme a couple of years back.
Is your bedtime closer to eight or eleven? >> Eleven. Would you go around the world in eighty days? >> Absolutely not, what the hell for. I’d rather take a leisurely trip to a couple of destinations and not overwhelm myself and end up not enjoying anything at all. Did you turn eighteen in high school, or afterwards? >> Afterwards. I graduated a month after I turned 17. [a-zebra-is-a-striped-horse]

what comes after a done deed? only curious. grass is never greener but the undertones change. it's all about what's suitable. i look good with everything i choose. i've never been one to make bad choices.
being alert is my thing too. i feel so wide eyed and sharp. keen & aware. i put my thoughts down to take in moments as they are.
there's more than what i want. i tend to necessities, but my needs. i have needs as a woman, as a person, as myself. i don't know if i've ever highlighted that before. i guess i will.
i referred to my day as going through the motions. enjoyable motions, motions nonetheless. things aren't thought of in a strict matter lately. the only matter of fact i concern myself with is payday, and i don't think of it. get to week's end and go from there. is it friday? no. ok then. but what joy is friday? i don't know, we'll see friday.
it's what comes after, after all.
complete comes

The entire fucking alphabet But if you really wanna be picking then R A C I N G W E S T
this is so late and so long i’m sorry!!!
Rain. I love the smell afterwards, the way it makes all the trees look even greener, the way the sun comes in from behind the clouds just before it stops pouring and everything looks beautiful. Roses, especially the deep, crimson red ones that remind me of love. Reading, any time, anywhere, anything. Books of all different shapes and sizes with a blanket and the corner of my couch and just hours alone. Roleplaying, because I like turning into someone else, walking in their shoes, even just for a few minutes. Representation in the media of all different types of people, more than just straight, white, neurotypical, cis men. And Rainbows, because they’re a symbol of pride for a community that matters a lot to me.
Autumn. It’s by far the best season; I love the sun coupled with wind and cold air, and the way all the leaves change colors so beautifully, and I love that it’s a time for things to change. Annabeth Chase. She influenced me so much as I was growing up, and I looked up to her fire and her brains and her bravery more than I can put into words. I still do. All Time Low, my favorite band who writes all of my favorite songs, whose lyrics I know by heart. Apples, because they’re delicious. And Artemis, goddess of the moon, the hunt, and maidenhood.
Chocolate. What more is there to say? It’s chocolate. Carter Holt, an OC of mine who I love to pieces. Cartoons, like Young Justice and Voltron and Miraculous Ladybug, because I love the animation and everything about them. Car rides that last for hours, especially over scenic views, even though my legs may be stiff, because I have my best thoughts there.
Indigo, because it’s a dazzling color. And also because I couldn’t choose between blue and purple (what can I say? I’m bisexual). I.M., better known as @queeninbrown, because you’re an amazing friend and being around you makes me so happy. Intersectional feminism, because it is so, so important. And Iron Man, because he was one of the first superheroes I ever loved and Tony Stark is such a wonderful, complex, well-made character.
Nighttime. Especially very late, when everyone else is asleep and I’m the only one awake, when the stars are shining and the moon is out and everything is so quiet and it seems a hundred times more magical. Nice, France. I’ve been there once, and it’s a beautiful, charming place, filled with beaches and art and villages. Nightwing, because Dick Grayson is an amazing, inspiring hero and I love him and all that he stands for.
Grassy fields. Running through them, rolling down hills, everything. Girl Meets World, because this show never ceases to inspire and amaze me with it’s messages and it’s maturity. Gun Control, because we need more of it. Enough said. Girls! Because wow!! Galaxies, galaxy aesthetics, galaxy-colored things. The universe is so vast and beautiful and they’re just a snapshot of the most amazing parts. My girl @glitterfilledballoons. Gay pride.
Writing. It’s at the top of the list for obvious reasons. It’s become such an immensely important part of my entire being, like when I’m writing I feel like I’m exactly the person I’m supposed to be. I can’t explain how much it means to me and the impact it’s had on my life. Winter, the second best season. I love snow, especially on the very first day when everything is pristine and white and it all seems to hold a sort of magic. Wally West. He’s one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, ever. I have this connection with him, somehow; there’s something about his sense of humor, his cockiness and desire to prove himself and his reckless bravery that really gets to me. I will always, always love Wally with all of my heart. The Weasleys. All of them. Every single one, because they are perfect. Amazing. Brilliant. And Wakanda, because of the beautiful and fantastic Black Panther and the impact it’s had on society.
Elephants. They’re beautiful, they’re majestic, what more can be said? Eggplant, the way my mom cooks it, which is really random but it tastes so unbelievably amazing. E.T., a stunning film that made me cry.
Stars. I don’t know what it is about the stars that make me love them so much. Maybe because they’re so far away and so beautiful that they seem to have some kind of otherworldly, unknown magic to them. Maybe it’s because of the beautiful patterns they make in the sky. Maybe it’s because, even now, I’m still wishing on them. Superheroes, of every kind. They represent the best parts of humanity, they stand for all the things I want to see the world become. There’s something about the masks and the capes and the saving-lives that speaks to me on an entirely new level, and I love them. Summer nights, because of the warmth and the breezes and the stars, and catching fireflies in cupped hands and the freedom of it all. School, as much as I hate it and complain about it, it’s taught me so, so much about the world and about myself, and I’m exceptionally lucky to be able to have it. Saffron, because the smell will always remind me of home. Sara Lance, a badass, bisexual captain. She was the person who made me question my sexuality. And having her to look up to as I figured out I was bisexual made all the difference. Spider-man, one of the greatest heroes of all time. He’s just wholeheartedly good; he does everything he does because he’s the most selfless person I think I’ve ever seen depicted. He’s inspiring, constantly, and I love him. Shuri, because she’s smart and hilarious and the MCU needed an intelligent, female POC queen like her. Sirius Black. Enough said. Space, Springtime. Sarcasm, because I have too much of it. And Speaking out for what you believe in.
Teenage years. I like being a teenager. As difficult and angst-filled as it is, there’s a sort of reckless freedom with a bit of urgency to it. Something I can’t quite explain. Traveling, because I love to explore the world, see every little corner and everything it has to offer. It has so much to offer. There are a million different cultures and places and people to see, and I want to see them all. Tea, green, black, iced, hot, always very, very sweet. Telling stories, and hearing them. I love learning about everything that people have done. And Thinking, when I’m alone and it’s quiet, and my thoughts can just go to so many different places.
sorry this was so damn long, i had a lot to say. thanks for the ask!!!
send me some letters and i’ll respond with things that i love.

Part eleven of The Lioness and the Wolf.  Part one.
previous <> next
Night in the desert left the air dead and stale, laying over the vast sea of sand and rock that offered nothing to her tired wings.  On the coast, even along a river, she could coast on a warm air current to give herself a break from having to stay in the air. Here she had to work to keep herself from drifting toward the ground.
Not helping her was her choice of flying form. A vulture would have had wings made for soaring, and even butterflies migrated longer distances than crows. At least like this she blended into the dark night sky above her, making her virtually invisible to the lifeless Approach below.
She beat her wings against the dry air despite her exhaustion. She could barely see anything --she’d see better as an elf-- but the stark, violent outline of Adamant Fortress was just barely visible in the quarter-moon light. She’d never seen it before, but the description captured its sharp silhouette unmistakably. Torches broke up the darkness on its walls, illuminating sentries in glittering silverite.
As she neared the fortress she drew closer to the ground, aiming for a perch atop an unguarded wall. Her talons met cold, hard stone and she let her wings fall open, resting her sore muscles.
Voices drew her attention down the battlements, and she shifted into a mouse before the approaching guards could see her. She shivered in the cold and scampered into a crack between broken stone slabs. The Wardens spoke Orlesian, complicating her mission, but she could understand enough to follow along.
They spoke of their dinner, of the ale at the fortress and what they missed from their homes. They were both human, and one was much older than the other. He had a thick grey beard peaking out from beneath his helmet and spoke in a harsher, more rural accent.
The older man leaned against the wall, looking out over the abyss of desert before him. “Ce plan de Clarel...” He trailed off, shaking his head.
The other man, tall and lanky, with scraggles of blonde hair poking just past his collar, adjusted his uniform before joining his companion at the wall. His rank was higher than the older man’s, but he seemed greener. “Vous vous inquiétez trop. Elle sait ce qu’elle fait.” He turned away from the desert, facing the older man.
“Ce n’est pas juste.” It isn’t fair.
“C’est notre devoir.” It is our duty.
The older man fell quiet, letting an uneasy silence rest between them. What was this plan? What was Clarel asking them to do? Her paws were silent as she padded forward, glaring at them, trying to better understand. The older man lifted his hand and brought it to his face. He slowly removed his heavy gauntlet, catching his partner’s eye as he closely examined his palm. “Je ne savais pas que la magie du sang était notre devoir.”
Eirwen crouched back, eyes narrowed. Blood magic was not part of their duty --unless, perhaps, he was referring to the Joining. It was supposed to be a secret, so he must have been unpleasantly surprised to learn that there was some element of ‘blood magic’ involved in being a Warden. Still, she had a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. It didn’t seem right; something worse was going on.
She left the crack in the wall and scampered to the ground. The pain that formed in her wings had transferred to her arms, where it ached as she made her way deeper into the fortress. She foresaw several days of using minimal magic and laying in a hot bath back at Skyhold in her near future.
At least this form was easy to miss, allowing her to sneak into a door left ajar and give her access to the interior of the fortress. She scuttled into a storeroom, and almost immediately scrambled back as an overwhelming gust of magic rushed through her.
She rubbed at her nose and took cover behind a heavy wooden crate. The pull on the Veil was so strong here, and she was already using so much mana that the extra strain made her head spin. She could do nothing but wait until it passed, the spell wearing through her senses so fast that it briefly rendered her deaf and blind.
When she could finally move again, the power had faded. She crept out from behind the crate, pupils expanding in the darkness all around her. Something sticky and thick stuck to her paws, and when she could focus enough to breathe right she tasted the unmistakable scent of blood.
Why here?
But she could barely begin to investigate before she heard a low, threatening growl. The sound came from somewhere not of this plane, somewhere ghastly and wrong. She turned, taking in the shadows, looking for the source, but saw nothing until she caught a glimpse of light high above her.
This room appeared to be the lowest floor of a great tower. High above, light flickered through worn floorboards and demonic snarls hissed from another world. She remembered how she felt when the Inquisitor introduced her to a Rift, and felt a chill at the familiarity of this sensation.
Shouting Orlesian voices followed, but she couldn’t understand what they were saying. From what she could grasp, they sounded stressed.
She ran past the pool of blood and into a narrow hallway lit with sputtering torchlight. She needed to find a way up without changing form again, as her mana was wearing thin despite the breaches in the Veil here. The hallway lead her to a junction with one way right and one left. She chose right based on nothing but a gut instinct and lead herself to the base of a long, spiral staircase.
Her body was too small to easily bound the stairs, but without another option she forced herself to climb. Hundreds of years of travel on the ancient dwarven steps had worn the center of each stair down towards the stair beneath it, giving her an easier place to lift her tiny body from step to step.
Still, she was exhausted and sore by the time she reached the top of the staircase. No one passed her, but she knew whatever she’d witnessed at the base of the tower was over by now.
She backtracked through the hallway, to where she figured the voices came from. A heavy, worn wooden door stood slightly ajar, just enough for her to slip inside the room and hide amid the darkness of old barrels and cracked bottles of ale.
In the center of the room were two Warden mages and a smoking pile of ashes. “C’est d’accord. C’est d’accord. Nothing you did is wrong.” The speaker was a woman, probably mid- to late-forties, with curly brown hair and freckled arms. Her accent was strong, but when she spoke Common Eirwen understood. The woman hesitated, raising her arm for a moment, before pulling her companion into a gentle embrace. “It is okay. Shh, shh...”
The other Warden didn’t move, didn’t even let himself fall into the first Warden’s arms. He was visibly young, fresh-faced with a dirty uniform and dark, thick-rimmed glasses.
“It’s for the best, Will. You heard what the Commander said. This is our duty now. This will stop the Calling.” He said nothing, didn’t shake, didn’t move, just sat there staring forward as the other Warden held him closer. “Do you want to go back to the barracks? Get some rest?” She looked up toward the top of the tower, as if it held some answer. “It must be late. You should go to sleep.”
“Do you think I’ll be able to sleep?” His voice was sudden and sharp, his accent Fereldan. The air in the room changed, as if the power of his speech mutated the atmosphere. He pulled back, his eyes cold and bright. “You made me do this. This is wrong and you made me do it.”
“William...”
“I don’t want to be part of this. I don’t want this.” He pulled against her and her grip tightened. “Let me go. Let me go, Rose.”
“I cannot do that. You are upset. You are not understanding--”
“I know what we did. I know what I did.” He wrenched away from her and stood, causing her to fall forward and catch herself on the floor. “I don’t want any of this.” He turned, and a sudden flash lit up the air. Sparks flew and Will fell forward, a devastating crack splitting the tense atmosphere as he landed hard on his right hand. The pile of ashes exploded, scattering thick dust around the room. He cried out, gasping and groaning, trying to escape the magic rope wrapped around his ankles.
“William. Please.” The older Warden stood slowly and walked toward him, her footsteps loud on the floor. “Listen to yourself.” He gasped, cradling his wrist, writhing in the ashes. “This is for all of us. We made a sacrifice. We commit ourselves to this Organization. We are Grey Wardens, William.” She knelt beside him and he rolled on to his back. “If you are going to cause problems...”
“I won’t. I won’t, I promise, I won’t. I won’t argue anymore I promise I’ll just --I’ll do it. I’ll do whatever you ask me to.”
She put her hand on his face and he closed his eyes. “I cannot believe you.” She drew a blade from her side with her free hand and put it against William’s neck.
A powerful bolt of thunder shot through her shoulder, sending the blade spinning across the floor. She looked up at the source of the spell, to where Eirwen stood with her hand outstretched, sparks flickering around her fingers. She panted, the effort of breaking her form and using another spell wearing her already-thin store of mana even thinner.
Rose crumpled, grabbing her injured shoulder, and her hold on William’s legs broke. He scrambled back, still nursing his wrist, and stared at Eirwen in surprise. “Who are you?”
“What is going on? What happened?” Eirwen kept her aim on Rose, but looked at William as she spoke. “What did you do?”
“I... I don’t understand... where did you come from? Who are you?”
“What did Clarel ask you to do, William?”
Using his name caused him to focus, and he swallowed hard before attempting to speak.
“We are doing what we have always done.” Rose cut him off and Eirwen looked at her, magic still dancing around her fingertips. “We are protecting the world from the Blight.” She hissed in pain before going on. “You would not understand. No one could understand that has not seen what we have seen.”
Eirwen’s eyebrows raised. “No. I imagine they could not.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, silver pin. It shone in the light of her magic, a griffon with pale blue paint on the tips of its wings. “Tell me what’s going on.”
“You are her, you are Ferelden’s Commander...” Rose’s eyes widened before hardening, her features twisting into disgust. “Where have you been?”
“Tell me what’s going on.”
“Blood magic,” William spoke up between short, sharp breaths. “They’re summoning demons.”
“What?”
“They’re going to go into the Deep Roads and kill Razikale and Lusacan before they get corrupted by the Blight. They think it will stop the Calling.” He shook his head, his voice shuddering. “They made me use blood magic to summon one of them. They... made me kill Colette...”
Eirwen stepped back, trying desperately to slow her breathing. She lowered her hand, panic widening her grey eyes. “Wait... you are --you hear it too?” William nodded, and she felt her back hit the wall. “Why do you hear it? How can that...” She shook her head. “No. This won’t solve anything. This is --that’s just... that’s so stupid.” She looked around, at the doors, at the top of the tower.
“They made me kill her.”
Eirwen swallowed past the dryness in her mouth, her eyes drawn to a scattering of ash on the floor. “I need to stop this. You can’t use people like this, it’s not--” Pain jolted through her side suddenly and her words caught hard in her throat. With a shaking hand she touched her abdomen, where dark red blood spilled from a spike of ice shoved deep into the space below her ribcage. Rose had her arm raised as she stared hard at Eirwen.
“I cannot let you stop us. You must understand. We are doing what is right. We are saving lives.”
“You’re killing innocent people,” Eirwen rasped. Weakness spread through her bones, radiating out from the hole in her stomach. “This can never be right.”
“If you are truly one of us, then you must understand why this is necessary. Why we must do this.”
William hesitated, looking between them, before he went to Eirwen. “How can I help?”
“This isn’t what we do. This is --this is a perversion of our duty. Of your duty.” Eirwen fell back against the wall, barely able to hold herself up on the hard, cold stone. Rose shook as she got to her feet and walked towards them, one hand pressed to her shoulder.
“You do not understand.” Eirwen touched the wound again, warm blood melting the ice around her fingers and soaking her clothes. “But now that you know, I cannot let you escape.”
Eirwen sunk down to her knees, and William sunk with her. He reached out, his hand careful as he wrapped his fingers around the spike of ice. “I can help you. I... I’m not a very good healer but I can try.” Eirwen glanced at him, then back at Rose.
“I am sorry.” Ice crystallized in the air, more blade-sharp shards appearing as Rose aimed them at Eirwen.
Eirwen attempted to fight back, forcing the last of her magic to hold the spikes back from bolting towards her. William tried to help her, but even the offer of his magic was too much for her to take hold of. He turned his focus toward Rose and hit her with a blast of spirit magic that sent her stumbling backward. The ice spikes flew in every direction, shattering barrels and bottles so that the room exploded with noise.
With Rose distracted, Eirwen took her dagger from her hip and shoved it into William’s hands. “Tell them the demon did it.”
“What...” He reeled back, eyes wide with shock and pain. “No.”
“If you don’t kill her, she’ll lie as soon as anyone sees what happened. She’ll tell them you attacked her.” Rose tried to collect herself and stepped forward, each step heavy with purpose. “You know they’ll believe her. I can’t help you anymore. I can use a spell to heal myself but I won’t be able to help you afterward.” She pushed him back. “Tell them the demon did it.”
She used whatever mana she had let to shift again, a process that healed her wounds and returned her to the shape of a mouse. Scrambling, clumsy, aching, Eirwen ran for the door and half-fell, half-jumped back down the stairs.
At the base of the stairs she returned to the junction, turned down the unexplored path, and found herself outside of a locked door.
Though she was always herself, taking on the form of an animal gave her the senses of that animal --for better or for worse. As a cat, her night vision sharpened and her whiskers gave her better balance. Her crow form could spot a target from hundreds of feet above, as long as she was flying during the day. As a mouse, she could pick up sounds high above the range of a person but nowhere near as low. Any kind of muffling, like a door or wall, made hearing what was on the other side almost impossible.
She squeezed under the door and popped out into a room that was empty save for two people --a man in distinctly Tevinter robes with garish facial hair, and the Warden-Commander of Orlais herself. They spoke in low voices, so she crept closer in the shadows to hear what they were saying.
The escape left her tired, left her lungs aching for air and her body sore. Adrenaline ruled her now, so as she settled down to eavesdrop she could feel pain and heartache returning. She pushed the feelings away, choosing to slip further into the simple mind of her current shape.
“What does it sound like? Your Calling?” The Tevinter stood at the end of a long table, hands held behind his back, eyes focused on Clarel. She sat in a tall chair at the other end, one hand wrapped around a bottle of something murky.
It began with nightmares. Every Warden had nightmares, but they only grew worse with time. Eirwen’s dreams were reminders of what she’d done, of the mistakes she’d made and the people she’d wronged. She also saw the chaos of the Deep Roads, the sickening, oozing body of the Broodmother and her ravenous children. Her loved ones became warped versions of themselves, twisted caricatures that abused her in ways their true selves never would. The dreams were lessened with alcohol, dulled to confusion. Connecting to the true Fade, to the realm of her peaceful dreams, had grown more and more difficult over the years, to the point that she could scarcely manage it at all if the Veil was thick.
Then came the panic, the twisting sickness in her gut that eroded to paranoia over time. A burnt tree was no longer simply a random act of nature; it was an omen. If someone looked at her wrong they were obviously doing it because they could read her mind, because they knew how sick she was. This stage, for her, had only barely begun. If she held on to her own sense of logic she hoped she could stave it off.
“I hear music,” Clarel said, quiet and slow. “Not always, and it is not close. It sounds distant, as if it is on the other side of a door or at the end of a long hallway.” She shifted her weight and raised her head, though she kept her gaze on the far wall. “Before I go to sleep, it is there. When I am alone, when I have nothing to distract me, it comes in as a quiet dirge.”
She took a long, deep breath before going on. “And I hear the whispers. It is the voice of the Old God, speaking to me when the music is loud enough to hear. It comes from everywhere.”
“It’s all in your head though.” The Tevinter frowned at her. “Can you not see that?”
"Have you ever been afraid, Erimond?” He said nothing, and she went on. “Fear is in your head. It is not tangible. You cannot touch it. But it is still real.”
He ran his hand down over his beard, a small, scraggly thing with poorly-shaved sides.
“This will help?” Clarel’s voice rose in pitch, hopelessness sinking in. “You believe we can stop this? Using your plan?”
He nodded firmly. “Of course. It will be difficult, and it will take many lives even beyond those needed for the ritual, but it will save your Order.” He looked at her, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. “You do trust me, don’t you?”
Clarel laughed bitterly. “What other choice do I have?”
He backed up, crossed his arms over his chest, and raised his chin. “We will have another ritual in two days’ time. I anticipate trouble from that conscript of yours. Stroud has been gathering allies...” He said the Senior Warden’s name like a curse, like it tasted foul in his mouth. “I strongly suspect he is working with the Inquisition.”
“They are misguided.” Clarel closed her eyes. “We should send a convoy to Skyhold to explain the situation.”
“You think they will listen?” Erimond scoffed. “They are fanatics. They follow a Qunari brute calling herself the Herald of Andraste. They would never listen to us, to you.” He sighed, lowered his arms from his chest, and walked around the table to sit by Clarel’s side. “You are doing the right thing, Clarel. You are protecting your Order. History will thank you for saving countless lives from future Blights.”
Eirwen desperately wished she could shift into her normal form and explain why everything about this was wrong. She felt trapped in this shape, unable to do her own duty and speak sense to Clarel.
There was a rapid, loud knock at the door, and all three of them turned. “Warden-Commander, you are needed in the Western Auxiliary Tower.”
Clarel looked at Erimond again before standing slowly. “Come in.”
A middle-aged Warden pushed open the door and looked between them. She straightened. “Something terrible has happened, Commander. You have to see it for yourself.”
“Very well. Magister Erimond, we will continue our conversation tomorrow morning. Get some rest.”
“Happily, Warden-Commander.” He bowed with a dramatic flourish and slipped out of the room through a door on the far side. Clarel left, letting the other Warden lead her away.
Eirwen took her cue to leave. She left the room and followed a trail of stray, open mana to a storage closet. A single, almost-empty bottle of lyrium provided her with just enough energy to shift back into a crow.
She would need several days to reach Skyhold, but she had to get back as soon as possible. The Inquisitor needed to know what was going on. Everything she’d seen left her numb, shielding her from the deadly cold of the desert night. She couldn’t think straight, couldn’t focus on anything but pushing ahead.
Yet there was a small tinge of relief to it all: if even a new recruit like William was hearing the Calling, then maybe all of it was a farce. Maybe she had more time than she thought.

Prompt: Could you please write about the Primes and Betas eating for the first time? Whether it be somehow trying food thousands of years ago on earth, or eating in the zoo for the first time. Pre-canon. :) I'm interested in why they would choose to try food, and their impressions of it, having never tasted food before.
The Eating Experience
The Primes and the Betas have very different philosophiesabout eating.
Amethyst 8XL, impromptu leader of column 8, knew better thanto condone human behaviors, such as this.
She could practically hear the obnoxiously angry shriek ofher commanding Agate, going on about how “only a Crystal Gem would partake ofsuch unorthodox behavior!” Elle couldn’t care less. That same commandingofficer was supposed to relieve them of duty a week ago. Her and her column—whatremained of it—had been patrolling the woods surround Prime for more than amonth. They were bored, tired, and who didn’t need a little excitement in theirseemingly immortallives?
So, when 8XJsuggested that they check out some of the fruit bearing trees deep within thewoods, Elle whole-heartedly agreed. There had been next to no activity aroundPrime for several years, as the Crystal Gems put more effort into locating thesecretly constructed Beta kindergarten, and the fruit was just going to rot offthe trees, anyway. All the gem activity had scared away any hungry humans, besides the occasional wander. But what it really came down to was the factthat no one was around to tell them no, and the Amethysts had always had a bitof a rebellious streak.
The gems allsat in a circle as the tallest of them, an Amethyst with excessively sharpteeth–lovingly nicknamed Sharky–collected the colorful array of fruit and tossing them with recklessabandon at the group. Some were caught mid-air, some landed in the middle ofthe circle, and some smashed against the heads of gems who weren’t payingattention. It was all in good fun.
“So, how dohumans eat this stuff?” Jay asked, holding one of the fruits up speculatively.
“Beats me,” Sharky replied with a shrug. “But it’d be nice to bite into something that doesn’t yell at me to knock it off.” To emphasize her point, she sank her teeth into the next fruit she grabbed, peel and all, not even paying attention to the mess she was making.
Jay hesitantly did the same, first puncturing the fruit, making a face, peeling back the outer layer, and finally biting again into the juicy inside. The others were a little less daring at first (though open to new things, the Amethysts were always at least a little concerned about doing what was considered acceptable by the rest), but seeing these two do it was the encouragement they needed. Elle, however, stood to the side, looking out for any other gems that might see them and feeling left out.
Gee looked back at her in confusion. “Eeeeelle, come oooooon,” she drawled, holding out one of the fruits temptingly. “It’s got mushy insides…”
“That does sound interesting…” Elle had already made up her mind, but her stupid duties were getting in the way of her fun. Be the leader, stop this now!
Instinctively, she caught the fruit as it almost whizzed by her head, peeled off the outside as Jay had done, and taking her first bite. At first, she didn’t know what to make of the sensations that assaulted her mouth. She’d gotten dirt in her mouth before during battle and rough sparring matches, but nothing compared to this. It was soft and juicy, refreshing though she didn’t need it to gain energy. The subtle acidity of the fruit made her tongue tingle, and it’s sweetness made her mouth water for more. Stifling a groan, she went in for more.
Now, how were they going to clean up before they were finally brought back to base?
“So…have you Betas ever eaten organic junk before?” Elle asked, concluding her tale.
Even with the biased slant of a good experience, the whole idea of eating made Skinny feel sick. Maybe it was the anxiety of doing something new, or something frowned upon, or something that the Crystal Gems would do, she didn’t know, but she couldn’t fathom trying something like that just for fun. The Betas were certainly crazier than the Primes when it came to taking risks, but at that moment she could have sworn those Amethysts had lost their minds.
“No offense, but that sounds disgusting,” she replied dryly, trying to keep her tone from being too mean-spirited.
“Ahhh, that sounds disgusting!” Carnelian echoed, sounding far more enthused than her companion.
Skinny stifled a shiver as she remembered the time when hersmall friend tried to take a bite out of a cactus, just because she had watcheda little organic creature hollow one out to make a home of it. Unlike the Amethysts, who had planned to do what they did all along, Carnelian was an unpredictable fireball, doing whatever felt right in the moment. And unlike the Jaspers, who wouldnever do anything they were told not to do, unless it was for the greater good.Eating served no functional purpose for gems, and was therefore completely useless.
Ugh, she was starting to sound like a Peridot.
The other Betas who were present—namely the Triplets, Cleft, andTawny—listened with a mixture of distrust and curiosity. Prime may have been surrounded by vast woodlands, but Beta was in the midst of a desert since its creation. Although the area had been significantly greener before the kindergarten was manufactured, the organic life had still been sparse. All they had ever known was red sand, cactuses, and a beating sun, not this mysterious fruit these Primes were so apt to taste.
And humans. No human had ever ventured even close to Beta, because it was midst of one of the most uninhabitable places in the region. No easily accessible water source and no sustenance to forage for, and certainly not enough to sustain a whole group of moderately-sized organics. Yes, she was really starting to sound like a Peridot.
“Come on, Skinny, don’t make that face,” Tawny urged, punching Skinny lightly in the shoulder.
“Yeah, don’t be a stick in the mud,” Cleft joked, referencing Skinny’s build and shoving her roughly, but it didn’t faze her. The Betas abused each other all the time.
She had to admit, she was curious herself. Since arriving at the menagerie, formerly owned by Pink Diamond and now by Blue, even the most rule-bent soldiers had grown relaxed, Skinny included. Unlike the Primes, the Betas weren’t rebellious in any form of the word, but now? She might just try it, just to spite her superiors.
So, she shoved Cleft back and replied, “I’m not.”
Elle chuckled at the exchange. “So, you’d eat organic stuff if I gave it to you?”
“Next time we’re on Earth,” Skinny conceded, not knowing when, or if, that would ever happen.

The #1 Fabric to Avoid, According to Science
By Allyson Payer via @whowhatwear
Tumblr media
Photo: 80s French Elle magazine editorial
As you know, the skin is by far the body's largest organ. So it goes without saying that protecting it and treating it well is of the utmost importance, which is exactly why we should be thinking about what it comes in contact with every day—like our clothing. And in case you've ever wondered what the worst fabric for skin is, hear us out.
While it's admittedly tricky to avoid every fabric that science deems bad your skin, informing yourself on the dangers of certain textiles can lead to wiser decisions about how often you choose to purchase and wear harmful fabrics. There's something to be said for the "ignorance is bliss" mindset, but when it comes to small sartorial tweaks that could greatly improve the health of your skin and body, knowledge is undoubtedly the way to go.
To make it a bit easier for you, we did the dirty work and dug through the depths of the internet to provide you with the skin-saving information you need. Keep scrolling to find out the worst fabrics for your skin, as well as fabrics that are, alternatively, good for your precious skin.
Bamboo
When you think of bamboo, a buttery-soft, fluid fabric probably comes to mind, but in reality, that's not how it's found in nature. In its natural state, bamboo is stiff and rough. According to research conducted by sustainable outdoor clothing brand Patagonia, the process to convert bamboo to its softest state (rayon fiber) releases toxic chemicals (carbon disulfide, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid!) that are actually reproductive hazards.
Wool
As anyone with dry or itchy skin issues will tell you, certain fabrics exacerbate the problem. One of the biggest culprits is one that's found in nature—wool (not to be confused with the softer merino wool). Live Science says that wearing wool can trigger eczema flare-ups, and a Mayo Clinic doctor, Megan Johnston Flanders, MD, says that the fabric can even irritate normal skin.
Synthetic Fabrics
This is the category that holds the majority of the skin-harming culprits. Man-made fabrics like acrylic, polyester, rayon, acetate, and nylon are treated with thousands of harmful toxic chemicals during production, according to ScienceDaily. They reported on a study from Stockholm University, in which researchers chose four groups of substances related to health risks and tested them for "occurrence, quantity, toxicity, and how easily they may penetrate the skin." The highest concentrations of two of the substances were found in none other than polyester.
Toxic chemicals aside, synthetic fabrics simply don't breathe, and anyone who's worn polyester on a hot summer day is probably well aware of that. The fabric also traps odors, which Popular Science explained in an article. Not to go into too much gory detail, but skin germs found in sweat feast on chemicals, which synthetic fibers can't absorb, therefore creating an environment for smelly bacteria to grow. All signs point to polyester being the number one worst fabric for skin.
Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics
Any fabric made to be wrinkle-resistant (even non-synthetic ones) get their wrinkle-free powers from a hazardous chemical called formaldehyde. ScienceDaily reported that greener methods are being investigated, but in the meantime if you're tempted to purchase an item based on this quality, we suggest sticking with natural fabrics and grabbing the steamer instead.
Vintage Clothing
The reason that vintage clothing can be harmful to skin is simple. According to Dr. Ava Shamban of Everyday Health, "Old fabrics and furs that have not been cleaned properly or not been stored in a dust-free garment bag can harbor years' worth of dust and dander that can really raise a rash." Do yourself a favor, and get your newly acquired vintage piece thoroughly cleaned before wearing.
The Most Skin-Friendly Fabrics
By process of elimination, you've probably already guessed that the best fabrics for your skin are natural ones. These include cotton (especially organic), merino wool (which is softer than wool, thanks to finer fibers), cashmere, hemp, silk, alpaca, and linen.
If skin health is a concern of yours, we hope this will encourage you to be more mindful of the materials your clothes are made of.

What is something small that brings you a lot of joy? >> The first dandelions of the season.
What would it take for you to feel completely satisfied with your life? >> Honestly, at this point, I think all it would take is moving somewhere a bit warmer and greener and with a lot less people around. I’m pretty okay with everything else in my life. It’s light-years better than it ever was.
What was going on the last time someone yelled at you? >> An argument, most likely.
Describe the best and worst aspects of your personality? >> I’d rather not.
How did you discover your current favorite band(s)? >> ---
When was the last time you changed your mind about something? >> I was originally not going to go for a walk this morning, and then I did.
How have your dreams and ambitions changed since you were younger? >> They haven’t really. I still don’t have any ambitions.
What are some of your current favorite lyrics? >> Lay Me Low by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds has some good lyrics. I listened to it today on my walk and was reminded of that.
Are you more of a private person or an open one? >> I am open in the sense that I’m not ashamed of myself or anything (you know, when Inner Critic isn’t in charge). But I’m private because I just don’t think everyone needs to know everything about me all the time. The fortress of my existence isn’t necessarily impenetrable, but you can’t just fucking waltz in either, lmao.
What is something you wish you had learned when you were younger? >> Meh. There’s no guarantee that learning a particular lesson at an earlier time would have made my life any better, so who cares. I did my best with what I had and here I am.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement? >> Being here, right now, still alive and not, like, fucking locked away somewhere or dead in a gutter.
Are you creative or artistic? What do you like to express through art? >> Sure. I don’t know how to answer the second question.
What is something you eat that others consider gross? >> I dare someone to call something I’m eating and obviously enjoying “gross”. See how long I put up with that rude bullshit.
Five ways your life has changed over the last five years? >> I moved out here, I stopped using DXM, I gained weight, I got married, I experienced first class flight.
When was the last time you needed help with something? >> I don’t remember.
What kinds of things do you consider romantic? >> I’m not interested in romance.
What is something you will never do again? >> Who knows.
In what ways do you think you inspire others? >> I’m not sure anything about me is particularly inspiring. I’d have to be explicitly told otherwise if I’m going to have any idea about this.
What is something from your childhood that you still enjoy? >> The Prince of Egypt.
In what ways are you open-minded? How about close-minded? >> I’m open-minded in almost all ways I can think of. I can’t think of a way in which I’m close-minded...
What is something that is uniquely YOU? >> I don’t think anything is uniquely ME. There’s always going to be someone out there with at least a similar experience or opinion or worldview as me, even if I never encounter them. There’s probably someone else right now who is reading The Dark Tower and getting to my part and going “that’s... that’s me, I lived that life” and tbh I hope I do encounter that person so I can have someone else to bitch about Roland to.
How do you tend to conduct yourself in arguments? >> I tend to just. Not have arguments. I’m over it, there’s nothing in the world I have ever found that is really worth arguing with someone about. Maybe I’ll find something one day, but right now I am really content with just not bothering.
When was the last time you apologized for something? >> I don’t remember. I try to avoid doing things I need to apologise for as much as possible.
Name one healthy and one unhealthy thing you do? >> ---
Do you prefer to be alone or around other people? >> I prefer to be alone, although I will make an exception for a certain few people. And by “few” I mean “I can count them on one hand”-few. (There are plenty of people that I like, sure, but when it comes to purposefully setting aside my alone-time to spend time with someone else... there’s gotta be more than just “yeah, you’re cool” going on.)
What is your most recent passion or obsession? >> Final Fantasy XIV.
If money wasn't an issue, how would you live your life differently? >> Well, I’d buy more high-quality, long-lasting products (which are usually outside of my current budget, so despite my preference for them I often have to settle for the cheaper options). I’d be able to make all the food choices that I prefer, buying local produce and better ingredients and such. And we definitely wouldn’t be living here.
When was the last time you made a drastic change to your appearance? >> I don’t remember. My appearance has been pretty static for the past five years, aside from my weight.
What is something you believe in that not many others do? >> The experience of being from another world, which happened to be written about by some guy on this one and published as fiction.
What calms you down or comforts you? >> Can Calah, primarily. Also, sitting in the sunlight.
When was the last time you went somewhere new? >> Ha! Good fucking question, eh.
With whom do you spend the most time? >> Sparrow, because we live together.
What's your favorite food to have for breakfast? >> Veggie burgers and chips. I don’t know when or how that happened, but it did. Samefood gang~
Do you have any unusual eating habits? >> I guess the concept of samefooding is a little unusual, considering it seems to be particular to people with spectrum disorders or whatever.
How old were you when you figured out what you wanted to do for a career? >> ---
When was the last time you conquered a fear? >> I don’t know.
What did you think of the last book you read? >> The Poisonwood Bible took me like three years to finish lmao (I would read some of it and then put it down and forget about it for months at a time -- a whole year, even) but I found it to be very engaging and immersive. I loved the way each character had such a distinct voice -- I would sometimes cover up the chapter title (which would be the name of the POV character) and try to guess the character from just the first couple of sentences and I always got it right, just because I could tell their voice immediately. It was a lovely story full of emotional and philosophical depth and I gave it five stars on Goodreads now that I’ve finally finished it, hah.
What is your current favorite television show? >> Succession, lmao. I didn’t expect to get sucked into it the way I did, but HBO dramas really are good at that.
What happened the last time you were annoyed? >> Spooky is jumping on things he shouldn’t be jumping on again. He’d better not knock anything over that I have to clean up. This is reason 3498587 why I don’t care for pets.
How would you describe your bedroom? >> Small and easily cluttered. Ask me again after I’ve thrown away/donated half of my belongings (as I tend to do).
What happened the last time you cried? >> I was being overwhelmed by environmental noise.
When was the last time you were out in nature? >> This morning. Not like, fully immersed in nature -- I was walking down a sidewalk, after all -- but there was some to observe. It’s as good as it gets, for now.
When was the last time you were in a big city? >> January (Houston, Texas).
Have you been drifting away from anyone lately? >> Not to my knowledge.
Is there anyone with whom you would like to be better friends? >> Meh.
What do you like most about summer? >> The warmth, the Sun, the wealth of outdoor things to do.
What are your favorite things to do during the winter months? >> Be inside :|
Who were you with the last time you watched a movie? >> I was alone.
What was the subject of your last phone conversation? >> Insurance bullshit.
What was your first pet? Do you still have this pet? >> A Rottweiler. No way, that was when I was a child.
What was the last thing you purchased online? In a store? >> Underwear (got price-gouged, too, but that’s what happens when you will only wear a specific kind and no other will do). The last thing I purchased in a store was groceries.
Where was the last place you went on vacation? >> I guess going to Elle’s wedding was kind of a vacation.
What is your favorite thing to learn about? >> I have a lot of favourite things to learn about.
Who do you trust most in your life? >> Can Calah.
Have you ever done any volunteer work? If so, what? >> No.
If you have a job, what do you like best about it? >> ---
If you were to redecorate your house, what style would you choose? >> I live in an apartment, that’s not happening.
What is your relationship like with your parents? Siblings? >> Nonexistent.
When was the last time you visited your relatives? >> ---
What are you going to do now that you're finished? >> Might take a peek at my dashboard, might get bored of that within 5 minutes and do something else, who knows.
