Camp (Presumed Innocent) will star as JP Morgan, the world-famous investment banker who finds himself at odds with George Russell (Morgan Spector) over the future of the railroad industry. Martin (Evil) will play Madame Dashkova, a medium who claims to be able to commune with the dead. Wever (Unbelievable) will take on Monica O’Brien, Bertha Russell’s (Carrie Coon) estranged sister who appears at a crucial time for the family.
“The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic and social change, when huge fortunes were made and lost overnight,” reads the season’s official description. “With the old guard officially deposed, New York society finds itself turned upside down, and all must get their house in order. But even those at the helm of this new era may find that change comes at a cost.”
Other new cast members joining the above trio are Leslie Uggams (Roots) as Mrs. Ernestine Brown, Elizabeth Kirkland [Phylicia Rashad]’s friend and a member of the Black elite community in Newport; Lisagay Hamilton (Winning Time) as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, the famed Black suffragist who inspires Peggy (Denée Benton) to become involved in her cause; Paul Alexander Nolan as Alfred Merrick, a dashing, wealthy New York businessman, who has all the hallmarks of the old money set — elegance, refinement and sophistication; Hattie Morahan (Fool Me Once) as Lady Sarah Vere, Sister to the Duke of Buckingham (Ben Lamb); and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark) as Athena Trumbo, Dorothy’s (Audra McDonald) beloved first cousin and a part of an elite enclave of Black residents of Newport, R.I.

Ellen Sharples's miniature of Hamilton
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found an interesting - yet questionable - miniature of Alexander Hamilton. According to The Walter Art Museum, it was painted by Ellen Sharples, the wife of James Sharples, in 1796. Although the miniature lacks any date or signature.
Ellen Wallace Sharples was an English painter who specialized in pastel portraiture and watercolor miniatures on ivory. She met artist James Sharples in Bath when she became his student. They married in 1787, and she became his third wife. The couple emigrated with their children to the US around 1794, where they would follow in the footsteps of English artists who capitalized on the burgeoning demand for portraiture in the New World. Ellen began drawing portraits professionally around 1797, while they were residing in Philadelphia, to supplement the financial well-being of the family. Ellen's career flourished as a result of her husband's original portraits being copied on request, and her miniature reproductions were sold for the same as her husband's. Miniature portraits, such as the Sharples', were affordable and interesting, and made good gifts to significant others—alternative to Gilbert Stuart's and John Trumbull's larger scale and more formal portraits.
Evidently Ellen's artstyle is almost completely identical to her husband's, as you can see when you compare Ellen's to Sharples's version of Hamilton that was also painted in 1796. Which makes me think Ellen's above was one of the copies she made, considering the similarities and same date. Ellen also made portraits of other notable figures like Washington, Theodosia Burr Alston, and even Elizabeth Hamilton (Also in 1796).
What caught my interest the most though was the braided hair in the back. The contrasting colors indicate that they belonged to separate people, an auburn brown with ginger highlights, and a dark brown. It is my best guess that these were Hamilton's and Eliza's hairs, as they seem to match roughly with them. Eliza kept many clippings of Hamilton's hair, as it was tradition for the time. To quote Susan Holloway Scott; “But hair from from a famous head became more than a mourning memento. It was history, a surviving reminder of a notable man or woman. Famous hair was collected and treasured as a tangible reminder of a more glorious past.” [x] Besides her sons inheriting the treasured strands of hair, she also had a mourning ring with Hamilton's hair locked inside. [x]
And the hairs on Ellen's miniature seem to decently match Hamilton's surviving ones;

Jaws (1975) - REVIEW
Tumblr media
youtube
It's been nearly 50 years since Jaws, arguably the first summer blockbuster, debuted in cinemas. I was born in the mid-1980's and I've seen Jaws more times than I can count and much like the generation who first experienced it, it's definitely affected how I feel about the water. Featuring one of the most iconic opening sequences in cinematic history that set the tone for the 120 minutes that followed, Jaws is two things; scary and consistently entertaining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jaws has scared generations by exploiting a very primal fear when it comes to the ocean; the fear of the unknown. The film's troubled production and in particularly the issues surrounding the mechanical sharks, put director Steven Spielberg under huge pressure and forced him to shoot many scenes from the shark's point of view rather than showing it. The resulting sequences combined with John Williams' iconic score are so effective you wonder why it wasn't considered from the start? Spielberg's nightmare making Jaws has become the stuff of legend but his decision to shoot on a real location and on the open water elevates Jaws visually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By today's Hollywood standards, the central characters of Jaws are not what you'd expect. Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw) are not your typical action heroes or are inherently likeable one way or the other. That they share great chemistry and were given plenty of room to improvise their lines gives Jaws both an authenticity and levity that balances against the horror. Jaws is a terrifying film but it's also a film that has something a general audience; drama, comedy and plenty of edge of your seat set pieces. It may be considered to be the first summer blockbuster but it is still one of the very best blockbusters you could ever hope to see.

VERDICT
Despite being nearly 50 years old, this is an old classic that still looks fantastic on the big screen and is right up there, or even better, with some of todays blockbusters.
5/5
