Close to 1,500 light years from Earth lie a pair of baby stellar twins known as Herbig-Haro 46/47 — which are barely a few thousand years old.

A star the size of our sun, by contrast, takes an average of 50 million years to reach even the stellar equivalent of young adulthood It's Herbig-Haro 46/47's extreme youth that gives the formation more of a blob-like appearance than the stellar duo it is.

Young stars are buried in clouds of dust and gas, which they absorb as they grow. Sometimes, however the infant stars ingest too much material too fast.

When that happens, dust and gas erupts from both sides of the formation, giving the young pair their misshapen look.

But if you have patience — 50 million years worth of patience — what is a blob today will be stars tomorrow.

A pair of brilliant stellar nurseries located 1,600 light years from Earth, the Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster are home to a relative handful of very young but very bright stars.

Four of the stars are easy to see with a simple, amateur, four-inch telescope.

One of the four — the beast of the young litter — is especially visible, a full 20,000 times brighter than our sun.

Apart from their four main stars, the Orion Nebula and Trapezium cluster contain approximately 700 additional young stars at various stages of gestation.

(L): It’s not easy being a Wolf-Rayet star, like this specimen imaged by the Webb telescope at a distance of 15,000 light years.

A rare species of stellar beast — NASA estimates there are only 220 of them in a Milky Way galaxy with at least 100 billion stars — the Wolf-Rayet burns hot and burns fast, with temperatures 20 to 40 times the surface of the sun.

All of that rapidly expended energy causes the star to lose its hydrogen envelope quickly and expose its helium core.

The result: a very early and very violent death.

A star like our sun burns for about 10 billion years. As for a Wolf-Rayet? Just a few hundred thousand before it dissolves into cosmic dust.

(R): If the Wolf-Rayet star dies an ugly and violent death, the celebrated Ring Nebula, photographed by the Webb at a distance of 2,000 light years from Earth, has been expiring beautifully.

The glowing remains of a sun-like star, the nebula was discovered in 1779 by the French astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix.

As the nebula throws off its outer layers of ionized gas, it reveals its characteristic blue interior, composed of hydrogen and oxygen that have not yet been expelled off by the nebula’s stellar wind.

Dwarf galaxy NGC 6822 lives up to to its name — home to just 10 million stars, compared to the minimum of 100 billion in the Milky Way.

But what NGC 6822 lacks in numbers, it makes up in spectacle — which the keen eye of the Webb telescope has revealed.

Discovered in 1884 by American astronomer E.E Barnard, NGC 6822, is now known to have a prodigious dust tail measuring 200 light years across..

What's more, it's home to a dense flock of stars that glow 100,000 times brighter than our sun.

Spiral galaxies are often defined by uneven — and even ragged — arms.

But not galaxy M51, which lies 27 million light years from Earth and is defined by the tautness of its arms and the compactness of its structure.

M51 isn't alone in space. Nearby lies the companion galaxy NGC 5195.

The two galaxies are engaged in something of a gravitational tug of war — one that the NGC 5195 is winning.

NGC's constant gravitational pull is thought to account for both the tightly woven structure of M51's arms and for tidal forces that are thought lead to the creation of new stars in the arms.

Just below Orion’s belt lies one of the most celebrated objects in the night sky: the Orion Nebula, a stellar nursery that is home to about 700 young stars.

This Webb image focuses not on the entirety of the nebula but on a structure in the lower left-hand quadrant known as the Orion Bar.

So named because of its diagonal, ridge-like appearance, the bar is shaped by the powerful radiation of the hot, young stars surrounding it.

A baby by stellar standards, the IC 348 Star cluster is just five million years old and located about 1,000 light years from Earth.

Composed of an estimated 700 stars, IC 348 has a structure similar to wispy curtains, created by dust that reflects the light of the stars.

The conspicuous loop in the right hand side of the image is likely created by the gusting of solar winds blowing in the direction that, from Earth, would be west to east.

When it comes to galaxies, there's big and then there's huge and by any measure, Pandora's Cluster — more formally, known as Abell 2744 — qualifies as the latter.

Not just a galaxy, and not even a cluster of galaxies, Abell 2744 is a cluster of four clusters, which long ago collided with one another.

Located 3.5 billion light years from Earth, Pandora's Cluster measures a staggering 350 million years across.

on the practical/technical side:

having a solid understanding of anatomy helps, of course - the basic bone structure of course, but how skin, fat, muscle hangs as well. you don't actually need to watch live-action porn to get references (i never have believe it or not), but i do follow a few historical kink/bear magazine archivists online. personally i find that there's more of a variety of beautiful shapes and humans in those old photos, and you generally know it's consensual since they've personally submitted them.

you also can't go wrong with reading other erotic comics ... i say comics vs illustrations since you start to see the pacing of these scenes like any other human interaction and the tools the artists use. when does intimacy turn into foreplay? when does the artist/mangaka zoom in to capture the sensation of the moment? what clever tricks do the artists to capture the climax when the bodies are all pressed together and when finding a good camera angle is tricky? how do they show the heightened feeling with symbols and textures? how is kink power dynamics shown with characters in different positions? do you show faces and the expressions to show the pleasure or not? what comics feel cold and manufactured to you versus ones that capture real eros? why? etc.

on the mental side:

if you're anything like me, you might have a lot of shame to untangle when it comes to harder varieties of erotic art. (i hope not! not everyone does. but it's unfortunately common given the societies we live in.)

it's going to take a while, and it's going to feel really weird at times when you draw something that's uncomfortably intimate or taboo, but that's when you know it's working and you gotta keep pushing through.

you gotta keep drawing.

privately, i have a personal rule that i'll draw anything at least once; if i feel afterwards that it turned out to be a personal squick, i won't go there again, but that guideline has been marvelous to start breaking through the manufactured idea of disgust and also just to experiment with putting myself in other people's shoes about what they find hot. sometimes it's surprising! i've learned a lot.

lastly, on that note - draw what you find deeply intimate. forget about other people. selfshipping? the most niche kinks possible? the kink that feels like the internet can't stand? who gives a shit about them (no taste, the lot of them).

draw the human. the tenderness, the visceral, that overpowering desire for you that almost scares you with how intense it is and that sends your brain alight.

that's going to be timeless.

I played Queen Beast, the 90's retro free English language VN - it was very good! For one, it has the correct moral philosophy for life:

But somewhat more seriously its simultaneously fun & impressive. Its art, as many have commented, is pulled right from an alt-history timeline mash-up of Slayers & Record of Lodoss War, with a deftness I haven't seen in a long while (for a free indie VN at least).

And I think what it does best is how much this goes beyond the art - its plot & writing slots right into the feel of the genre too. It blends detailed worldbuilding, ero comedy, super edgy nightmare fuel, and more all together. Its a little rough at the beginning to be honest, but once it hits its stride and you acclimate to its tonal pacing it flows really well.

For myself I appreciated the socio-economic realities that are woven into the story; the protagonist is a miller and you will hear organically about how that job functions, the impact of declining infrastructure on the local economy, different governance structures in the kingdoms, and so on. Its never the focus but a lot of fantasy stories these days take certain worldbuilding components as a given, which this doesn't, and I appreciate that. As much as it can for its short run-time, at least.

I have seen a bunch of commentaries that downplay its erotic elements - statements to the effect of "oh it has nudity but its not an eroge, its focused on the plot". This is technically correct, it isn't an eroge, but that implies that erotic engagement is not a focus of the story - which is false. That definitely ranks in its top 5 priorities - that is how the best of this genre works, it doesn't believe pornographic elements inhibit narrative development. For some people I'm sure it does - those people won't like this game. If you aren't in that camp I think it works well as a tonal hotpot of a story.

The drive to Dracula's Lair is uneventful and far too long for Logan as Wade chatters away about everything and nothing at all. When the van finally comes to a stop outside the ruins of a massive castle Logan breaths a sigh of relief. The castle is perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking a lush forest, dark clouds of an impending storm roil overhead threatening to break any moment, and an eerie silence hangs in the air. The two men exit the vehicle and look up at the towering expanse of the structure in awe, absorbed in the ominous surroundings.

"Okay Van Helsing, what's the plan?" Wade looks to Logan.

"I don't fucking know, what are we even walking into?"

"Dracula's castle obvi. You've totally fought him before!"

"Nope."

"Well at least two of you has!" Wade shouts throwing his hands in the air. 

Logan's brows knit together in confusion before he answers, "eh, let's just take off his head, I'm sure that'll work, right?"

"Cool, good plan. Very well thought out, tons of detail, I'm sure nothing will go wrong at all. I am not being sarcastic whatsoever."

The heavy doors open easily for Logan, the hinges groan under the weight of the timber as they swing inwards, slicing through the silence and echoing through the stone halls. There isn't a living soul to greet them as they step over the threshold. 

"Well this is creepy." Wade whispers, "They could turn this into a haunted attraction and make a killing!

Logan rolls his eyes and immediately acends the staircase ahead, "Stay quiet."

Wade puts on a serious face and salutes Logan as he follows him up the stairs. 

"What do you think Drac is like?" Wade's whisper is harsh and grating on Logan's ears. 

"I said. Be. Quiet."

"Sorry Sir." Logan's head snaps back to wade, giving him a scowl. "Oh, like being called Sir, wolvie? Gonna store that in the ol memory banks for later. I-"

Logan turns as he reaches the top of the stairs growling, "Shut the fuck up before I make you." 

"Is that a promise Peanut?"

The metallic shink of Logan's claws barely rings through the air as he lands an uppercut to Wades jaw, the three blades piercing through the mercenary's head. Wade moans in pleasure causing Logan to retract his claws in disgust before turning away to move further into the castle with an exasperated grunt. 

A long hall lined with portraits and suits of armor stand between the men and another enormous door. The muffled sounds of music and chatter waft through the air and meet their ears, "Sounds like a party!" Wade sprints to the other end without a second thought and slips through the door. 

Logan reluctantly follows, surprise etched on his face when he opens the door to find a near exact replica of Jabba the Hutt's throne room.

"This is every nerds wet dream honey badger. They got Sy, Max, the whole gang is here!" Wade says in aww as Logan comes to a halt next to him. 

"What the fuck is going on here, what is this?" His eyes sweep the dim room, lingering on the tall brooding man that sits on a throne. His hand grasps a chain that leads to a young woman in a metal bikini laying on a fainting couch.

"Are you kidding me? You've never seen Star Wars? Come on." Wade's disappointment is clear, "We are so watching all of them when we get back. Question is do we go chronologically by when they came out or how the story takes place?" Wade trails off as Logan steps into the middle of the room, causing everything to fall silent.

"What brings you to my humble abode?" 

"You call this humble?" Logan looks around with a chuckle. "Seems pretty self indulgent to me, Bub."

The man rolls his eyes, "I am Vlad Dracula, and you are?"

"A huge fan, I can't believe I'm actually meeting you in the flesh! Ugh, I've seen all your movies, TV shows, I don't know how to read but if I could, I would have read the books too, probably. Maybe." Wade practically screams as he runs to Logan's side. "This is Logan, I'm Wade. We are looking for an intimacy coordinator!"

"A what?"

Wade takes a few steps forward, "They're like a simulated sex magician, they ensure the well-being of actors and actresses who participate in sex scenes or other intimate scenes in theater, film and television production. Blind Al was reading me this post on Reddit all about the different methods the use, taking advantage of angles-"

Wade is interrupted when a trap door opens beneath him and he's plunged into a deep dark pit.

"Deadpools," Dracula sighs, "always talk so god damn much!" The platform his throne resides on slides back revealing a large rectangular opening covered by a grate.

"Oh my god. This is the best day of my life," Wade shouts up at the newly opened viewing window into the depths, "I can't believe I'm gonna get to fight a real life-" 

He's interrupted again when a massive hand slams into him, sending him flying face first into the rocky wall before bouncing off and landing on his back. 

Logan looks on as he moves forward with the crowd, almost giddy at the prospect of watching Wade fight the monster below, a smile twitches at the corner of his lips. The crowd around him claps and cheers. This feels right, he thinks. 

The Rancor towers over Wade, he giggles in delight as he jumps to his feet, turning on his heel as he draws his katanas. He slowly side steps in a circle, the beast turning as it sniffs at the air. It lunges forward, allowing Wade to leap onto it's outstretched arm and flip up onto it's head. He drives the katanas into its eyes causing the monster to rear up and fling him off, and he crashes to the floor with a grunt. 

It slowly turns giving him time to stand up before its able to wrap a hand around him and lift him to it's mouth, swallowing him whole. The crowd goes silent for a moment before erupting in a fit of cheers and Logan joins the chaos. 

Maybe he can enjoy the rest of his life in the void like this. No rules, no one looking at him like he's a fuck up.

Suddenly the Rancor roars pulling Logan from his thoughts. It's guts spill from its stomach along with Wade as he yells, "Baby knife!"  The beast falls backwards taking its last breaths and a reverent silence hushes the crowd. 

"I've always wanted to get eaten by something and then cut my way out of its stomach!" He yells as the removes his katanas from its skull.

A door on the far side of the room opens and Wade walks through, trying to wipe the slime from his body, "downside, this is dry clean only."

Before he's able to further comment he sees that the room he has walked into is lined with Deadpools frozen in Carbonite, "it's like a me museum." His eyes widen as he drags his hands along each specimen.

"Alright, he defeated your monster, you gonna let him go Bub?" 

"I was thinking of adding him to my collection. Why don't you stick around, have a drink?"

"Think I'll pass. We're kind of on a time crunch here."

Dracula stands from his throne, handing the chain off to a guard before taking his place in front of Logan, "if you want him back, you'll have to battle me."

"Like a dance battle?!" Wades voice raises above the crowd.

"What the fuck?" Dracula looks over the crowd until he spots Wade pushing through to the front, followed by every Deadpool that should have been encased in Carbonite. "How did you get past the guard?"

"My sex appeal," he shakes his hips, "and murder. I murdered him."

A chorus of laughter from the Deadpool variants echoes in the hushed room, Causing Dracula's face to morph into rage, his body lifts from the ground, hair and cape floating above ethereally as he unsheathes his sword and the crowd scatters to the edges of the room, "I'm going to enjoy this."

"Why do bad guys always say that?" Wade looks to Logan who shrugs, "like we get it, you're kink is revenge slash killing me. Fuck. Hey, you know that thing-" Dracula brings his sword down hard towards Wade who manages to move out of the way just in time. "From X-Men #100, with Colossus? The speedball special, we should do that."

"It's the fastball special. Speedball is-fuck, nevermind. Yeah, let's fucking go."

Wade positions himself behind Logan to get a running start, once he reaches his mark Logan lowers his interlaced hands as a makeshift step, the moment Wade's foot makes contact he uses his immense strength to send the mercenary hurtling above the vampire. 

Wade turns in the air and grabs Dracula's cape, swinging down under him and throwing him off balance. He maneuvers through the room trying to to shake a screaming Wade off to no avail. The Deadpools whoop and holler, cheering Wade on, furthering the vampires disdain. 

"You've gotta try this Peanut! Wheeeeeee!" 

Logan shakes his head, placing his hand over his eyes as embarrassment flows through him. 

This is supposed to be the man that's going to help fix his world. What the actual FUCK. 

Wade loses his grip on the cape and crashes to the ground, "I've never riden someone's coattails quite like that before!" 

Dracula lands in the center of the room, charging headfirst at Logan. The sound of metal clashing fills the room, for minutes they dodge and perry each others attack until Logan gets an opening. He Perrys Dracula's sword with one hand while the other swiftly separates his head from his body. 

The body collapses unceremoniously to the floor and the head rolls back, coming to a stop at the feet of the slave woman. "ugh, he was getting boring anyways." She seats herself on the throne. 

"Who the fuck are you?"

"I'm the intimacy coordinator, but you can call me Cupid."

"Ooh, I wanna hear EVERYTHING about you." Wade rolls from where he was still on the ground and lays on his stomach in front of her, hands holding up his head as his feet kick back and forth. With a roll of his eyes Logan grabs him by the scruff of the neck and pulls him to his feet with a dejected sigh. 

"We don't have time for this shit." He snaps at Wade. 

"Fine," Wade rolls his eyes behind the mask. "I can get you back to your world if you'll help us."

"Why would I want to go back? I can manipulate people with my powers free of consequence here! I can have whatever I want, whenever I want! Drac was a fun plaything for a while but-"

"Ooooooooh, it was a sexy thing..." Wade interrupts, eliciting a scowl from her. Her eyes glow slightly and Wade giggles, "Oooh, that tickles! Not gonna work though, I'm already deeply in love with my lil honey badger!" Logan's brows knit in confusion at the admission. 

Her face turns to Logan and he lets out a hearty chuckle, "Not gonna work on me either sweetheart, I hate this fucking idiot." 

Her exasperated groan pierces the air and her fists ball up, she stands, ready to fight, "If I can't turn you against each other, I guess I'll have to take you out myself." She moves forward just as Wade speaks again, "We just really don't want our brains to get fingered by that hot bald bitch again."

"Cassandra?"

"That's the one!"

"Well fuck, why didn't you start with that? I've been trying to get to her for so long! She drives me fucking crazy. I haven't been able to get past her goons by myself. I'm in."

"So you can manipulate people's emotions, and you were an actual intimacy coordinator on your earth?" Wade raises a brow.

"Yeah, it was pretty helpful to the job. If the actors weren't feeling it, I just worked my magic and BOOM! Beautiful moment captured. With their consent of course."

"How the hell did you end up here then?" Logan interjects.

"Well a producer crossed me and one thing led to another and I tried to dominate the world with the aid of a tempad I found on a TVA agent I came across when they were hunting my Earth's Deadpool."

Wade gasps, "I made a cameo!"

"And now you just...?" Logan prompts. 

"Wander around, ingratiate myself into different groups and cause chaos. It's like watching reality TV, but I get to control it."

"Wow, that's fucked up. I wish I could do that." Wade says in awe. "Oh, when this is all done, I was wondering in you could help me write some spicy scenes for my fanfic?"

"Sure, I don't see why not."

"I'm gonna fight you now." Wade says before landing a punch to Logan's nose.

"I'm gonna wait outside while you take care of this lovers quarrel." Cupid states plainly before exiting the vehicle and sitting against one of the surrounding trees. 

In the early morning hours when the men have finally exhausted themselves enough to pass out, she gets behind the wheel and finishes the drive to their destination.

When the men wake up and are introduced to the others Cupid lays on the bed staring at the ceiling as they pep talk and come up with a plan. She adds tidbits here and there to help until it's decided that they'll invade Cassandra's the following day.

The group fights wave after wave of Cassandra's minions until the trio is able to infiltrate the Ant-Man carcass and find themselves in front of her. 

"Cassandra."

"Cupid." Cassandra says with a sly smile, "Last time we spoke you were grovelling at my feet. I quite liked you on your knees like that."

"I'm sure you did," she replies with a wink. "We could do that again...I've missed you so much, Baby. I know I messed up, but I can make it up to you."

"What the shit? I thought you wanted to kill her, not fuck her." Wade blurts out. 

"Can't it be both?" Cassandra and Cupid say in unison. They laugh as they run to one another embracing before their lips meet in a passionate kiss.

"This is too fucking much." Logan scoffs and runs towards Cassandra. She lifts a hand, still mid kiss, sending Logan flailing backwards through the eye socket of the Ant-Man and to the ground below. 

"I can never stay mad at you Honey Bee." Cassandra brushes her nose against Cupid's, "you can make it up to me by getting rid of this Deadpool." She waves in his direction. 

"I can get rid of him and the Wolverine with that little ring from that strange doctor. They'll never come back." Cupid says with a wide smile. 

"Or you could just destroy them."

"Ugh... You know how difficult that is. Especially for someone not nearly as powerful as you." She says running an index finger over Cassandra's lapel with a seductive smile.

"I know darling, but you could put a little effort into this relationship if you want it to work."

"How about a compromise. We send them through the portal and I'll do that thing you've always wanted me to do with the wings and the whip." Cupid says with a wink. 

"Bye boys!" Cassandra hurriedly opens the portal just as Logan returns and flings both men through with the flick of her wrist. 

"Wait, I needed help the fanfic!" Wade yells as the portal closes. "Dammit."

The enemy then advanced upon him, whereat his remaining troops fled back into the city. He had no other option but to retreat or risk being taken alive. He followed the confused retreat, cursing them, as he went, for their refusal to obey his orders, and shouting at them his accusations of treachery.

It was clear that the collapse was the result of a prearrangement with the enemy, and Antony made his way back to the palace after an honourable death was denied to him in the battlefield, crying out that Cleopatra had betrayed him, and calling her every foul name he could lay his tongue to.

It’s said that, as he stormed into the building, she ran for her life to her unfinished mausoleum which stood on the far side of a courtyard, overlooking the sea. It was a stone structure of two storeys. Her two ladies, Iras and Charmion, and one eunuch, accompanied her; and dashing into the mausoleum, they closed and bolted the great doors and thereafter mounting the stairs to the upper floor, from the windows of which they could observe something of what was going on in the courtyard and palace. It seems probable that the Queen was not responsible for the desertions. The generally held belief is: she knew quite well that Antony would hardly be persuaded to think her innocent, and her flight was from his wrath. A better probability is that she was preparing to burn up the mausoleum along with herself and the great treasures which she had accumulated as Antony gave his life on the battlefield.

Looking out of the window, one of her ladies called hysterically down to some servant or soldier below, telling him to go to Antony and to say that the Queen was about to kill herself; but the man in his excitement misunderstood the message, for the news that she was dead was presently brought to Antony as with two or three faithful officers, he paced about, sword in hand, waiting distractedly for events to shape themselves. At this He cried out: "Well, then, why wait longer? Fate has taken away the only thing for which I could say I still wanted to live."; and with these words he rushed to his own room, tearing off his armour as he went, and calling to his personal servant, Eros, to come to him.

He was heard then to speak aloud to Cleopatra, whose spirit he thought to be hovering near to him. "I am not unhappy to have lost you for a moment, Cleopatra my beloved", he said, "for I shall soon be with you; but what so shames me is that a famous soldier should be found to have had slower courage than a woman."

He then turned to Eros and, handing him his sword, encouraged him to keep his promise of being his executioner when the time came; but the man snatched the weapon and stabbed himself to the heart with it, falling dead at Antony’s feet. '"Well done, Eros!" Antony exclaimed, looking down at him in admiration, and picking up the dripping sword. "You have shown your master how to do what you had not the heart to do yourself." Thereupon he plunged the blade into his own body, and fell back upon his bed, where he fainted away.

The wound was not immediately mortal, and he presently coming to his senses, entreated those who had gathered around him to put him out of his pain; but at this they all fled from the room, leaving him groaning and struggling. Some of them ran to the mausoleum and called up to Cleopatra that Antony had stabbed himself but was still alive and thereat flinging up her arms and tearing her hair she screamed to them to bring him to her. They hastened back therefore and told him that the Queen was not dead but that she was calling for him; whereupon he immediately struggled to his feet but falling back, gave orders to them to carry him to her, although every movement was agony to him.

In their arms they brought him in the great heat of this summer's morning to the door of the mausoleum, but this could not be opened, for the bolts had been shot too deep to be moved; and he was therefore laid upon the ground beneath the window of the upper room so that Cleopatra might speak to him. The mausoleum, however, as has been said, was still unfinished and as some ropes were hanging down from the roof where the builders had been working. Then he was to be placed upon a stretcher and hauled up to the window. A few minutes later the Queen and her three attendants were frantically tugging and pulling at these ropes while the dying man lying half-conscious upon the lurching and bumping stretcher scorched by the sun, tormented by the flies, and agonized by every jolt ascended inch by inch towards them.

As he came near to the window, he regained full consciousness, holding out his blood-stained hands towards his wife, tried to raise himself up. Somehow, at last, they managed to drag him through the window and to lay him upon a couch, all covered with blood and dripping with sweat, and writhing in death agony. Cleopatra then flung her arms about him in a frenzy of grief, calling him her beloved husband, her lord, her emperor and her God. She mercilessly beat her breasts and tore her hair, wiped off some of his blood and smeared her face with it. She was shaken by the convulsions of her weeping but Antony stopped her lamentations and asked for a cup of wine so that he could speak to her. It is said that in that last frightful re-union all their misfortunes, all their bitter misunderstandings, were forgotten: for these short minutes of life which remained to him only their deathless love remained, and he was at last in the knowledge that they two, in spite of their many quarrels, were indeed one flesh. She brought a cup of wine, for him to drink; and when he had drunk, he gasped out some words of advice to her, telling her not to trust Octavian, but that she should look to her own safety if she could do to without disgrace.

"You must not pity me in this last turn of Fate", he whispered, "You should rather be happy in the remembrance of our love, the many good things that were mine and in the recollection that of all men I was once the most famous and the most powerful, and now, at the end, have fallen not dishonourably, a Roman by a Roman valiantly vanquished." A moment later the great Marcus Antonius breathed his last.

Hello Eros! Could you possibly give some advice to those who are trying to start writing a story and to those who are worried about their stories not getting looked at or read?

don’t worry haha we’ve all been there!

for me, I’ll say I definitely got really lucky—my first fic was objectively pretty bad but I hopped on quotev when bl wasn’t the most popular and got lucky i guess

buttt in terms of wattpad I definitely has to work my way up haha. my first fic there got like 100 reads in two months. I hope this answer is going to make sense because I’m not paying too much attention to the structure or whatever, but I’m gonna start with the popularity part first. btw I’m assuming you’re talking about people finding your works on wattpad, not quotev

intriguing plot matters… a lot. something that can catch the eyes of someone or maybe a pairing (yandere __ x __ ) that’s rare or creative. so overall the description of your story has to be good! I would say stick to concise and eloquent ones. just focus in including the pairing and the book description inside. I won’t lie and I’ll admit that aesthetics help a great deal, but don’t go too overboard with fonts or anything haha (if you need a website to copy and paste fonts, there’s lingojam or QWERTY.dev) don’t forget title matters a lot too!!

tag well! there’s no such thing as too little tags haha. after all, tags help readers to discover the story!

make sure you pre write a bunch of chapters b4 you update. updating at a consistent pace can really help you climb the rankings. don’t be discouraged when your fic doesn’t get too many views at the start—it all starts building up and the minute you climb the ranks, you should see a massive surge of popularity. so don’t give up.

now on to tips for writing! take note that I’m still considered a amateur so none of this is professional writing advice. it’s all very surface level

writing matters a lot, which is the obvious. personally as a reader I tap out the minute I see lowercase or no paragraph breaks. obviously good grammar and punctuation is needed. it gets really hard to read when everything is choppy and broken.

don’t try to be too fancy! of course, prose matters. it’s pretty and it shows a mastery of the English language. But I’ve seen fics where everything seems way too overdone— kind of like if they kept searching “synonyms for __”— a good vocab is always welcome, but too much can seem too pretentious. there are times where it’s obvious the word isn’t even used correctly lol

remember to plan your everything out first! I know some authors plan chapter by chapter but personally I don’t do that, I feel like it greatly limits me. I usually do character profiles, major plot points, scenes I want to include, character dynamics

lastly just don’t stress yourself out. writing should be fun and not stressful

The Ritual Breaks Story

If you hadn't guessed by the two other posts I have made on the song, The Ritual is my favourite song in Stray Gods: The Role Playing Musical. I would go as far as to argue that it is the best song in the musical as well, but that isn't the point of this post.

This post is to gush over why I love the song so much. Specifically, this post will talk about how The Ritual messes with the commonly used story structure, in its placement in the musical, and in the song's actual structure.

Let me explain.

SPOILERS AHEAD

This post will focus on three of the most common story structures, the Monomyth, the Three Act Structure, and the Freytag's Pyramid. But first, I would like to do some contextualisation.

These structures are not rules.

Anyone who tells you that a story "should" or "must" or "can't" do something is talking out of their arse. As such, these structures are to be used as analytical tools, rather than ratings. I am not going to be scoring the song as to how many points on the Hero's Journey it hits, I will be looking at how the musical as a whole uses the monomyth and how it doesn't and to what effect.

That felt like it needed to be said.

The Monomyth, or Hero's Journey, was presented in Joseph Campbell's 1949 book: The Hero With A Thousand Faces and it was, in my opinion, rather unrefined. Or more accurately, overrefined.

What do I mean by this? I mean that Campbell's monomyth was incredibly overdetailed and ridiculously prescriptive as Campbell tried to squint and put every story ever written into the same mould and make judgements about society at the same time.

It also had elements in it that haven't aged well at all. For example, one element that Campbell proposed every story had, was called the "woman as temptress" which is... not just sexist, but also inaccurate. I'm glad the modern monomyth has mostly avoided this.

As such, the monomyth concept is what I will be using, much like other modern interpretations, and either scrapping, or ignoring, certain elements. It is a medicine journey with a few more steps along the road. Ted Ed has a fantastic video on the subject, as does Overly Sarcastic Productions.

In any case, The Ritual, according to this model, fits into the "Trials" section. It's unimportant, and not typically a challenge for a character. This is the start of Empire Strikes Back, when Luke has to get out of the frozen cave. It's tangential.

But The Ritual is what several of the main characters have been leading towards. Eros and Aphrodite and to some extent Apollo have all been gearing up to this moment. You could read this as the result or crisis in their arcs, but I don't think that fits. It's its own moment, but it's its own moment in someone else's story, not Grace's.

The three act structure is the most famous, and is almost synonymous with writing as a whole, but it isn't as ubiquitous as you would think. James Cameron (who wrote The Terminator and Alien) offers this piece of advice:

"I firmly believe in the three act structure. I have just never written one."

The structure boils down to three sections of a story, each culminating in its own climactic event, that build into the third act climax. These don't have to be fast paced, but they are emotional beats. It could be a fight, or a quiet, retrospective moment.

There are then plenty of elements that are usually relegated to a specific act. For example, a villain might have a third-act breakdown, or a hero might discover their magical powers or something in the first act. And the mentour usually dies either in the first or second act climaxes, or quietly at the start of act three.

I would say that The Ritual hits the second act climax, possibly. Because Stray Gods almost intentionally avoids this structure. The closes thing it has to a first act climax is Challenging A Queen, which isn't really a climax, its more of an individual challenge that sets up something later. Similarly, Old Woulds might fit that first act climax, but it also sets up other stuff in later parts. It's deliberately unclear.

But you know what isn't unclear? The structure of The Ritual itself fits firmly into the three act structure, and so do a ton of other songs in the musical, most notably Phantom Pains. I would say the two songs are linked by grief and cycles, but the entirety of the musical is linked with that, so it's not really a unique thread.

The Ritual begins with exposition in the form of those stained glass windows about the war and the idols' place in it. Then it switches to a different location based on a choice you make.

Then there is a lull as Eros (Or whoever you choose if you get to a point where you can choose) begins to speak, before the final act gets decided, and it is here that all the decisions come to fruition. Everything up to the third act is set up, and it all pays off here.

Freytag's Pyramid is a lot less complicated than it sounds, and it is one that you have probably heard of, if not by its actual name.

This is the Freytag's Pyramid. I've heard people call this the five act structure, and I disagree with those people, but I can see where they are coming from. There are five main sections of this, but they aren't acts, they are descriptors.

The Freytag's Pyramid model is a graph. And yes, I am going to bring maths into this. (I can count to 12 and a half, so I assure you I am quite qualified)

The horizontal axis of the graph is time. As the story progresses, usually, you move from left to right on the scale. The vertical axis is tension. The more tense an event is, usually, the further up on the graph it sits.

As you can see in the diagram above, a story tends to progress towards a climax, with tension rising as the story picks up speed, until the story closes, and the stress drops to the denouement, which is just a fancy word for the finale. These lines can be a bit wavy as you see fit, but the general direction is fairly standardised.

So where does The Ritual fit into this?

Trick question, it doesn't. I would argue that The Ritual is its own climax. It should (if we were using this model) fit on the "rising action" section of this. But it doesn't, it's its own thing.

Ok, I've harped on long enough about theoretical stuff. The point I am getting at is that Stray Gods isn't Grace's story. That's a weird way of putting it but let me clarify. Stray Gods is the story of Grace convincing this messed up family to get along and get over their problems.

The Ritual feels like a climax because it is. This song is the climax of a different story that Grace stumbled into and helped change the direction of. It's the climax of a tragedy that Grace managed to avert.

Stray Gods functions like people watching and doesn't fit with the story structures because people watching is exactly what this story is. This is several different stories that have stretched and stretched until they have warped beyond comprehension and lost all meaning.

The stories you watch are trying desperately to stick to these pre-existing patterns, and they aren't working. Stray Gods is a musical about change. You don't fix these people's problems for them, but you convince them to change and to adopt a different story structure. To try things a new way. To try and fix themselves instead of running face first into each obstacle over and over again until either it crumbles, or they do. The Ritual is this concept put succinctly and powerfully.

I just like. I don't understand. Why did Apollo visit Kassandra at all? If he already picked the herb and made it into a cupcake and set it out for Zeus? What was the point in her saying "these things take time" if he already did the thing in question? Nothing else was revealed through her prophecy right? Just a plot point to have psyche save Zeus or whatever? Does she actually just see the past lol wtf

Apollo finds out about the herb from Kassandra

Moments later Eros and Psyche find out about it

And as soon as they put two and two together they call Zeus and he's ALREADY EATING THE CUPCAKE APOLLO MADE

So you're telling me that Apollo CONVENIENTLY found out about this herb in the 12 hour window leading up to the eve of spring and hatched his plan to bake a cupcake that would poison Zeus as a way to "fulfill the prophecy" ??? (or he went to the grocery store and sprinkled the plant onto some store bought cupcake idfk)

and it's not like Ouranos told him about the herb, because while they did originally meet in Episode 248, we just see Apollo asking for Ouranos' help (and nothing more beyond that cliffhanger setup), but we KNOW Ouranos didn't tell him that this special plant was on the verge of blooming because otherwise he wouldn't have needed Kassandra. Again, this just ties into that confusion I had in my review of the final episode that Ouranos seems to be referring to a different prophecy from Kassandra (the former is talking about sons overthrowing their fathers but the latter really just talks about the Titanomachy and then the plant that was used to weaken Kronos) but they're supposed to be "intertwined" somehow yet they're completely disconnected in logic and order of events. You can't even argue that Ouranos told Apollo to seek out Kassandra either because we KNOW Apollo knew Kassandra before he approached Ouranos, she was established in the comic literally 7 months of real life time ago.

God, it really just goes to show that the story is written around "things happening" with no regard to actual structure, establishing settings, building up tension, etc. Rachel just writes things as they come to mind without any regard as to how those things connect and the more you think about it, the more it falls apart.
