I am not sure if anyone else is deeply interested in apotropatic magic as I am, but it is very easy to invoke protective symbolisms around one's dwelling.
Do you need to keep spoils away? Put a picture of a serpent, especially if hellenic, to invoke the Agathos Daimon. Create rocks and monuments to gods, like Tinia Tular or Apollon Agyieus, invoke the imagery of Herakles who defeats monsters, or Arthur who protects the brythons.
Art is protection. Stained glass with symbols of heroes, cups with eyes, pictures of the harvest for plenty. Imagery of herbs and powers to invoke their likeness--does a mandrake still screech when framed?

The Festival of the snake catchers or snake-charmers) (Festa dei Serpari di Cocullo) is an annual festival held on May 1 in Cocullo, Italy in honour of St. Dominic di Sora, patron saint protecting against snakebite and toothache.
Its origins date back to paganism and have roots in an ancient celebration in honour of the Italian goddess Angitia (goddess of snake-charmers). The festival involves a procession carrying the statue of St. Dominic, draped with live snakes, through the streets of the village.

What I love the most about Etruscan culture is probably the funerary tradition and their necropolis that can be found in various trails in the Tuscia. These places are often so silent and peaceful that is a true joy to spend some time among them.
I’m sure I can’t explain how really these necropolis have a strong “liminal place energy” (I told you I can’t explain it with my words…)
This one I’m posting in particular is the Cavone’s necropolis:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Located along the slope overlooking the Treja river, the necropolis was crossed by the ancient city that led to Falerii Veteres (Civita Castellana).
The funeral site was used from the beginning of the 8th century BC. until the 3rd century BC.
Archaeologists have found wells dug into the tuff, stone or wooden sarcophagi and chamber tombs built during the last period of stay in the necropolis.
Tumblr media
My (uselessly included) sweaty face after reaching the hill where the necropolis is situated.

The two kites keen over your body
Their voices lifted in mourning with those of your loved ones
Wepwawet walks in front of you
You follow his great gray form into the Duat
Culsu opens the gates at his approach
Vanth stands beside Wepwawet lighting your way
Her sword outstretched, warding off any that may cause you harm
The Tinas cliniar stand beside you
None will dare harm you with them here
Charun guards your back, his hammer ready
Sokar's wings unfold overhead
He greets your soul
Anpu takes your heart in his hands, ready to weigh it on the scales of Ma'at
Your heart is pure, Wesir and Calu smile at your approach
You are welcomed into their kingdoms
Hetheru comes forward to offer you succor
The field of reeds stretches before you
I stand behind with your body, your khat
The kites cries match my own

Etruscan stamnos of man (Arimaspian?) fighting griffin 360-350 BCE. Ceramic, top. cm 29.8; diam. opening cm 17; diam. foot cm 12.3. Inv. 39568. On the other side a figure of a winged woman, seated on a small column, crowned, wears a simple peplum and her belt. (Unfortunately I couldn't find an image of the other side).
"Aristeas was supposed to have authored a poem called the Arimaspea, giving an account of travels in the far North. There he encountered a tribe called the Issedones, who told him of still more fantastic and northerly peoples: the one-eyed Arimaspi who battle gold-guarding griffins, and the Hyperboreans among whom Apollo lives during the winter.
Longinus excerpts a portion of the poem (Longinus, On the Sublime, tr. W. Rhys Roberts. Chapter 10):
A marvel exceeding great is this withal to my soul— Men dwell on the water afar from the land, where deep seas roll. Wretches are they, for they reap but a harvest of travail and pain, Their eyes on the stars ever dwell, while their hearts abide in the main. Often, I ween, to the Gods are their hands upraised on high, And with hearts in misery heavenward-lifted in prayer do they cry.
Similarly, the Chiliades of Ioannes Tzetzes quotes the Arimaspea. These two accounts form our entire knowledge of the poem, which is otherwise lost."

It's Friday! It's the 1st of December too!
D you know what this means to my practice?
Time to munch on something, clean up my space a bit and light two candles, one is for my Gods, spirits and allies and the other is for my ancestors, to whom I've started to give an offering too.
Want to know what it is? Drum rolls please:
water. It's water, plain, simple, life sustaining water put on the altar dedicated to all my ancestors that already has specific objects to one of them, since this person is one of my very close relative that I love a lot.
I still can't have the space that I'd like to give proper alchol and food offerings, but I can welcome my loved ones weekly, celebrating them even if it's with this little ritual of mine.
I am still building my routine and finding a balance in my practice and slowly finding my pace and place, but I love my Friday lovely devotion time!
P.S: it might be also done to include all the Gods who are making themselves known recently and that I've never worked with before, to know themselves and make them know me better, but hey! Gotta do what we can with the place we are in, right!?

The wolf of Mars
After asking about Mars and wolves and getting inspired to look around I'm just going to go all on in here on the subject just like on Twitter because by gods the more I think about the subject the more I love it.
Mars apparently was frequently accompanied by wolves, and not just because his offspring were raised by a wolf. Livy apparently described a statue of Mars on the Appian Way in which Mars was accompanied by wolves. Livy also, in The History of Rome, recounted a story where a wolf appeared as a reminder of Mars as the founder of the Roman people and an omen of their good fortune. In Rome there was also a "lupus martius", or "wolf of Mars", that was believed by Romans to be an omen of victory in battle. There is also Roman iconography featuring Mars mounted upon a wolf, or being carried on a chariot driven by wolves. See example from the 2nd century below:
Tumblr media
This motif appears to have carried on in later depictions of Mars from well after the Christianisation of Rome and much the European continent. An example here would be "Mars on his chariot pulled by wolves", painted by Claude Audran the Younger in 1673.
Tumblr media
Wolves were most definitely the sacred animal of Mars, a connection that is perhaps not entirely separate from the founding myth of Rome, where the sons of Mars are raised by a she-wolf.
I also cannot help but interpret resonances with a broader chthonic context relevant to the larger culture of ancient Italy. Mars, on his own, has his own chthonic context, in that he was regarded not just as a god of war but also of fertility and agriculture, patron of the virtus of the earth. He can also be seen as a descendant of similar Etruscan deities, such as Maris, who were chthonic and vegetative in nature. This link is discussed further in The Issue of Descent of the Deity Mars by Ekaterine Kobakhidze.
More importantly, in Etruscan culture, wolves were inherently chthonic symbols. They were believed to be liminal beings that could pass between presence in this world and in the underworld. Wolves were often seen by the ancient Etruscans as either demons or the spirits of the dead, or perhaps even as representing death itself. Etruscan gods of the underworld, such as Calu, Suri, and Aita, were also strongly identified with wolves. Aita himself, a god very similar to the Greek god Hades, is distinguished by his wearing of a wolf skin cap.
Tumblr media
There may also be certain reflections of this association in ancient Greece. The goddess Athena, for instance is sometimes depicted wearing a wolf cap, such as in statues of Athena Albani. This wolfskin cap itself is traditionally worn by none other than Hades, and the Illiad refers to Athena wearing this "cap of Hades" to avoid being seen by Ares. Wolves were also strongly associated with Apollo, and the heads of wolves also featured in necromantic rituals aimed at invocation. To quote Greek and Roman Necromancy by Daniel Ogden:
Greek language lychomancy recipes borrow necromantic procedures. In one, the lamp is set on the (disembodied?) head of a wolf. Chthonic demons are summoned, and Hades is invoked. There are libations of wine, honey, milk, and rainwater, and offerings of flat and round cakes.
Not forgetting about Lupercalia, that Roman festival which revolved around the veneration of a wolf deity, Lupercus, possibly linked to Pan, Faunus, or Apollo, and celebrating the ritual purity of the community by way of the passage of ancestral spirits through the underworld.
The warrior association also invites consideration of the wolves with the bands of warriors academically referred to as "Koryos" or "Mannerbund". In Greece, for instance, adolescent war bands honoured Apollo as the master of the wolves that symbolised their fighting style. The Norse Ulfhednar, who saw themselves as shapeshifting into wolves, are often counted as another example of a similar war band. In Russia, on the steppes at what is now Krasnosamarskoe, there were midwinter rituals where people consumed the flesh of dogs or wolves to become dog-like or wolf-like themselves.
It's kind of difficult to imagine how it all leads together outside of pure UPG. I just happen find whatever thread runs between the wolf symbolism of Mars to be fascinating, though I can see how it mostly just connects to the founding myth of Rome.

developing a personal pantheon is fun because sometimes it’s just like “i’m more drawn to the deity who serves this function in pantheon A than i am to the deity who serves this function in pantheon B” or “i know i want to honor a deity of XYZ and that only exists in one of these pantheons so that was easy”
but then sometimes it’s like “oh no i think i might have a completely different idea of how this part of the cosmology works than any of these pantheons”

It is a day of celebration. Joy fills your heart as you express your intimate feelings for the people in your life. Your confidence to articulate your emotions can’t be stopped because at a deeper level you hold nothing but respect for those around you. It is as if today you want to breakdown all those restrictions that have forced you from supressing how fulfilling and happy these people make you feel.

not to hype my patron god up but i think he deserves more recognition within polytheistic and pagan spaces so i'm highlighting him
Tumblr media
Janus
god/patron of doorways, change, beginnings, transitions, time, prophecy, history, omens, all dualities (ex. war/peace, but also things like beginning/end, life/death, barbarism/civilization, urban/rural, youth/adulthood, the list goes on)
his name derives from ianua which means door or doorway, Janus was an Etruscan and Roman tutelary and domestic deity. but his myths and level of importance varied: some viewed him as the initiator of life, others as a mortal king and son of Apollo, even, who then ascended to godhood, and his commonly accepted role of gatekeeper between our realm and the realm of the gods.
some fun facts:
janus' image was carved on coins! this is because he is legended to be the first to mint coins!
janus has two heads, this is because one faces the future while the other faces the past
janus has many wives! (jana, juturna, camese and sometimes venilia)
one of his most famous temples/holy grounds would signify eras of peace and war depending on if the doors were opened/closed

Is Italian Witchcraft... just Hellenism/Roman Religion?
Tumblr media
In the past people asked me why didn't I "just deal with Roman Deities, being Italian".
At first I did not understand how people could not understand that Witchcraft could be a religion, especially Italian Witchcraft, having "new Deities."
The more time passed, however, the more I realized that often the "new Deities" are considered "part" of the pantheon of which they are remnants.
For example, Perchta and Holda are considered part of the Germanic pantheon by many pagans, despite the fact that they are figures who emerged and were present when the Christianization of those peoples had been completed by then.
Similarly, a Hellenist guy recently ranted about the fact that until the early 1800s "saint Demeter" was still worshipped in Eleusis, and he considered this pagan remain in Christian times as part of Hellenism.
Come to think of it, even Leland himself had called his book "Etruscan Roman Remains."
I can understand that Diana and Lucifer might fit in smearily, for example, if Lucifer is understood as an epithet of Apollo (who in fact has Phosphoros as one of his official epithets in the Orphic Hymns themselves)...
But my doubt is, if so, is Madonna Horiente to be considered a Roman goddess?
Is Aradia part of the Roman pantheon?
Are those who worship the Lady of the Game neo-Druids, being in northern Italy, or Hellenists/Religio Romana practitioners, considering that this Deity is now seen as a Roman and now as a Celtic remnant?
Certainly I have a connection with Religio Romana and Hellenism, because of how much of my pantheon I share with them.
From my own personal point of view, I also call myself "Hellenist" (in the sense established by Emperor Julian, thus including the Roman pantheon too).
But as an official classification, regardless of my preferences, I still have doubts about whether Italian Pagan remnants are Hellenism or Religio Romana rather than "Italian Traditional Witchcraft"/"[Region of Italy] Traditional Witchcraft."
It is possible perhaps to divide between:
- Hellenists who also include Greek and/or Italian pagan remnants in the Christian era (or Heathens who also include pagan remnants in the Christian era found in Germanic countries), and
- those who only worship pagan remnants (which I would ONLY call Traditional Witches).
What do you guys think?

THE 2024-2025 BRONTOSCOPTIC CALENDAR
Tumblr media
Photo by Johannes Plenio on Pexels.com
[IMG ID: A scene of a lightning strike at light. The background is empty, sparing a few clouds illuminated by the light of the strike. There are two lightning strikes, one to the left that extends beyond the image, and another that stops slightly beyond the halfway mark of the image. The lightning strikes are a vibrant yellow, contrasting against a purple background, with the light around the strike taking on a striking red-pink.]

Content warning: The brontoscoptic refers to several possibly triggering events, such as death, disease, and abortion. The text also refers to common practices in the ancient world such as slavery and misogyny, which we must acknowledge for the evil it is.
A new year, new dates for the Brontoscoptic calendar! This year is a bit odd for the translation, the new moon in cancer was June 21st—meaning the majority of the “June” month is in July. The calendar picks back up on the next new moon, which is August 4th. Therefore the brontoscoptic month of July is in August. Strange for us to think of, but lunar calendars do not always translate easily into Gregorian.
Supposing that publicly, in all augural teaching, the ancients assumed the moon to be a reference point (for under this heading they classified both thunder and lightning signs), one likewise may correctly select the phase of the moon as a factor for reckoning, so that, beginning with Cancer, we shall make observations of thunder day by day, beginning with the first day of the lunar month, and following lunar months. From this [study] the Etruscans transmitted observations localized according to the regions that are struck from the sky by thunder. — Divining the Etruscan World: The Brontoscopic Calendar and Religious Practice, Jean MacIntosh Turfa

The Italic Myth of Vertumnus and Pomona:
Pomona was a beautiful and dedicated goddess, entirely devoted to her orchards. She had little interest in romance or suitors, and her primary love was her garden.
Vertumnus, the god of seasons and change, was deeply in love with Pomona. he admired her dedication to her orchards and sought to win her affection. However, knowing that Pomona avoided suitors, he devised a plan to approach her by using his powers of transformation.
Vertumnus took on various disguises to get close to Pomona. He appeared as different figures: a reaper, a farmer, a soldier, but Pomona rejected each one. finally, Vertumnus disguised himself as an old woman, believing that Pomona might be more open to advice from someone she did not perceive as a threat.
In the guise of the old woman, Vertumnus engaged Pomona in conversation, praising her work and discussing the joys of love. He then told her a cautionary tale of a beautiful maiden who rejected love and suffered for it. the disguised Vertumnus encouraged Pomona to accept the love of someone who truly cared for her, pointing out that Vertumnus, as the god of seasons and growth, was well-suited to be her partner.
Moved by the story and the old woman’s words, Pomona began to soften. At this moment, Vertumnus revealed his true form, casting off the disguise. when Pomona saw his divine beauty and realized how much he loved her, she finally accepted his advances.

These Bronze Statues Reveal Ancient Healing Rituals
Discovered in a dig at a thermal spring in Tuscany, Italy, the well-preserved items offer a glimpse into medical practices from the Etruscan and Roman eras.
An exhibition that opened Friday at Rome’s Quirinal Palace could be described as a classic rags-to-riches story.
Just ten months ago, many of the bronze statues now on show there — artfully spotlighted and captioned — were submerged in layers of thick mud in what had been a sacred pool of thermo-mineral water roughly halfway between Florence and Rome.
Their rediscovery last fall during an ongoing archaeological excavation in a field just below the Tuscan town of San Casciano dei Bagni made headlines around the world, propelling the bronzes — via a stint in Italy’s main restoration institute — to the rare honor of being exhibited at the presidential palace.
“It’s an extraordinary discovery,” Luigi La Rocca, the culture ministry official responsible for archaeology, fine arts and landscape, told reporters at the palace on Thursday, praising the variety of the bronzes, their quality and their high degree of conservation.

The artifacts — mostly dating from the second century B.C. to the first century A.D. — were votive offerings collected in the sacred pool of the so-called Bagno Grande, or “large bath,” part of a sanctuary that was in use in various forms for more than 700 years.
Lightning struck the building around the first century A.D., and following the Etruscan tradition of burying objects struck by lightning in a sacred place, the statues and other artifacts were concealed under a layer of terra-cotta tiles along with a bronze thunderbolt, a ritual called “fulgur conditum.”
Successive votive offerings, mostly bronze coins and plants, were deposited until Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in the fourth century A.D. Then, the sanctuary was dismantled, and its offerings were buried once again, which contributed to their remarkable conservation.
The dig that uncovered them began in 2019, but it was only in 2020 that the first artifacts — inscriptions, altars and small bronzes — began to emerge. Last year, the archaeologists dug further down into the sacred pool.

“We thought there could be something here, but nothing like what we found,” said Emanuele Mariotti, the director of the excavation, on a recent hot afternoon as he surveyed the site. “It was like a time capsule waiting to be opened,” he added.
The finds offer insights on ancient medical practices. The waters were considered curative by “Etruscans, Romans, Christians and Pagans,” Mariotti said. “This was a place of healing, meeting of cultures and medical knowledge.”
Many of the bronzes had inscriptions from the territory of Perugia, about 70 kilometers northeast of San Casciano, a considerable distance to travel more than 2,000 years ago. This shows “how complex and nuanced” cultural interaction was at the time, added Jacopo Tabolli, the scientific director of the dig and co-curator of the Quirinal show.
“Gods changed, but the water remained the same,” he added.

Some of the bronzes are still being restored, but many made it to the Quirinal for the exhibition. In one room, bronzes of arms, feet, ears and other body parts are on display, reflecting the various ailments that were treated at the thermal baths.
“These are unique,” Mariotti said, stopping in front of two bronze plaques showing what he said was a “very accurate” depiction of internal organs. Similar terra-cotta examples existed, he said, but bronze versions were hitherto unknown.
Other statues represented gods and goddesses, but also men, women and small children, wrapped in swaddling cloths. Some were sickly and in need of healing. Others appeared to have benefited from the cures.

The thermal springs are still used today for their therapeutic properties, both in the public baths near the archaeological site and at a private resort.
For San Casciano dei Bagni, a picturesque hilltop town, the ancient finds will hopefully bring new economic prospects, especially after the opening of a new museum in the city center.
Earlier this week, at a property deed transfer in Rome attended by various authorities, the culture ministry formally bought a palazzo in San Casciano dei Bagni from local clerics to house the museum (list price 670,000 euros, around $730,000) and Italy’s culture minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, pledged to contribute “additional resources.”

Massimo Osanna, the director of Italy’s state museums said Thursday that he hoped one section of the museum would be ready next year. “I’m an optimist,” he said.
“It’s going to be a tremendous opportunity,” said Agnese Carletti, the town’s mayor. Following on from previous administrations, Carletti’s council championed and funded the local archaeological excavations that led to the finds, offering room and board to archaeology students participating in the summer digs.
A new excavation begins next week, and Tabolli said that it would concentrate on expanding the archaeological site to better understand the context around the sacred pool. “We’ve reconstructed the structure of the sanctuary, but there is still much more to know about the overall site which must have been monumental,” he said.
Osanna said that more surprises could be in store. “We don’t know what else the sanctuary has to offer,” he said.
