[Ni/digitalgate02 here] See, this is what i've been thinking for ages and i don't like to limit myself into what is stated on wikimon and other fansites' databases to make lines... They're not a mandatory rule, and with things like the new TCG DigiCa they just embraced the wild combos you can make and evolution rules are by card color and not by specific lines (tho they do have some... suggestions now on the cards, i think?)

i also like the wild combos like Tailmon's OG Adv/02 line?? Which is slime → cat blob → puppy → cat → angel woman → PINK FLUFFY DRAGON

I wish we had more things like these... At least consistent theme, but not like Agu → Grey → MetalGrey → WarGrey sort of line... (and look, i love this line, it just... I love the design + shapes to change a little... ya got me?)

i love most of the main kid/protag mons and their forms, tho...

Like to be fair to Toei/Bandai, there is partially a reason to why the main partners especially tend to have such linear, specific evolution trees; not only because it makes the Digimon easier to sell, but also because the characters need to be easily recognizable to small children. Like the main character(s) having really bizarre evolutions could make it hard for a child to keep up with who's who (especially if they missed an episode), while having very consistent and strong thematic and color coding (etc) will make it always super easy for kids to keep up with. So I understand WHY the main partners tend to be the way they are, it just is the way it is. (It's also why I really loved the evolutions in Survive because aside from Agumon's Vaccine-line, that shit was WILD and I was LIVING for it, Dracumon alone had me losing my fucking shit, Floramon too)

Also I do feel like the emphasis on evolution lines is something the fandom tends to enforce more than Bandai/Toei. And, much to my shock and horror, a lot of people do kind of dislike wild evolutions, some people prefer the Pokémon-esque strict evolution lines. (See: every person who has ever made fun of Tailmon's evolution line for "not making sense") So often I see people share their Tamer OCs and their partner Digimon with full evolution lines and more often than not it's just a known partner Digimon with their default evolution line. Everybody has their own comfort food, and strict evolution lines are just that for some people. Which is fine, I'm just a little 🔪 if anybody tries to enforce strict evolution lines in places they don't belong (aka any space for creativity)

But indeed, I wish we could see more Wild Evolutions in canon more often, or at least have the main partner's evolutions change things up a little more than they tend to (honestly probably the best protag evolution is Gumdramon -> Arresterdramon, like despite the mostly identical color palette and many key visual elements, they really do look nothing alike and yet the evolution feels like a natural progression and is still easily recognizable, really love that.)

#Part of me wants to defend Agumon because I feel like the issue is more with the Greymon line than Agumon #Like Agumon is basic enough that you could easily see the baby evolve into a fuck ton of other things (like Tyrannomon or Seadramon etc etc #And I kinda feel like Greymon is still like Different Enough since the baby gets stripes and the horn and changes from yellow to orange #(Compare to like Guil -> Grow where Growmon has like. A pair of horns and a mane. And extra toes.)#(Like honestly I feel like the bare minimum is that if the design otherwise stays super similar at least change the main color!!)#(Even just a little just change the color!! Like I love ExVeemon but COULDN'T HE BE A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD)#(Same for Growmon. Just make him a different shade of red for fuck's sake)#(Unironically BlackGrowmon would make for a more interesting default evolution for Guilmon that vanilla Growmon)#But then MetalGrey (MY BELOVED) DOES LIKE. Very little to add to the mix. i'm starting to think living with 5 other people may simply be a problem

#vent post #negative #i've come to the conclusion i'm not getting enough sugar in my daily meals #(which is. ironic in a lot of ways. but i don't know what else the problem would be)#and that's great that's cool that i've come to this conclusion. i don't think i can solve this one #we don't buy that much sugary or junk food stuff anymore #my dad's got diabetes that makes sense that's understandable #so a lot of our family meals are like rice and meat and a salad #but yknow i'm not really gonna ask my parents to change that! it's been like that for a long time now it's fine it's alright #but i don't think i can actually solve the problem #i. already have a lot of foods that the rest of my family isn't allowed to touch. because i am So Picky #and when they were eating my foods more often i was Starving #i don't. think. i can ask for more. and you know what that's fine! that's fine that's ok i like my meals they're tasty as hell #what about snacks then? can we get snacks for the whole family? well no #we stopped buying more junk foodish snacks because it was All my siblings were eating #and it was bad! it was bad they shouldn't have been doing that. but now i don't think my parents trust us to be responsible with snack food #so our snack foods are. protein bar. fruit snacks (i had to request these specifically). popcorn #that's. that's fine. that's fine maybe i should be focused on fruit instead! fruit is good sugar!#well we don't store fruit i like the way i like it (don't put it in the fridge) so i never eat any of it anymore #but everybody else seems fine with it so really i'm not going to win this argument cause everybody else actually eats it more when it's out #(i don't think this is true. but i think it's true for My Dad and My Mom specifically.)#and i just. it really got me thinking about how much i don't have foods that i like in the house or meals that i love because Somebody Else #likes it done differently and not the way i like it #and that takes priority #to the point where i don't know what the fuck kind of foods i like because we just don't. have. any #i prefer white rice. mom prefers brown so we get brown. i prefer crunchier potatoes. mom prefers them soft so we make them soft #i like my fruits cold. my parents prefer to be able to See the fruits so they stay on the counter. i only eat chicken breast not any other #part of the chicken. my parents prefer thigh meat so we get thigh meat (which i don't eat)#oh huh. this post was a lot longer but tumblr deleted half the tags. yeah that's fair

Started writing a post about unit blorbofication and story depth in FE in light of the latest round of past FEs VS 3H VS Engage discourse, someone remind me to go back to writing it later when I get my brainpower back.

#tl;dr preview i think what's going on is kind of a conflict between differing tastes in terms of Level Of Character Depth In Units #caused by the franchise's struggle with balancing the blorbo genre of emergent gameplay #it's definitely stupid to act as if character depth and intensive backstories are somehow exclusive to 3H #and all other FEs run on flat gimmick characters #BUT ALSO it's stupid to act like FE hasn't historically also run on flat gimmick characters #because the fact is that flat gimmick characters are just what happens in any game where the cast is too damn big #and the game doesn't have the colossal space needed to give everybody depth #+ the franchise's permadeath mechanics tend to impede the writers' ability to develop said units anyway #in 3H's case i would argue that it also has a problem with faux depth where the writers WANT it to be complicated and deep #but also it's REALLY goddamn obvious that they're interested in some parts of their story more than other #and that they bit off way way WAY more than they could chew when it comes to building their fantasy world #and these other issues just compound the problems that normally come with 'too big cast in a game where permadeath real'#it is kind of a sad reality that someone would fall into 'the players have to make up their depth' eventually #because it's just kinda impossible to develop *EVERYONE* if you don't have infinite ongoing serialized story space #but there are ways of managing that cast scope creep that the FE writers aren't quite good at wrangling #do to the aforementioned conflicts of interest in mechanics and general care #engage i haven't actually played yet or watched somebody else play so the best i've got is 'it's fun trash/trashy fun'#so i can't judge how it handles its own cast scope creep #but i get the impression that it falls back to flat characters and generic plot #which obviously isn't going to be very filling if you prefer meatier narratives and characters #but that's just how the nightmare tightrope of cast scope creep rolls

I felt compelled to do this AGAIN.

I think this is pretty accurate, although again some things are a little out of place due to the nature of the battle-format. I love almost everything through up through about the mid-50s. And I still like everything to early 80s. 80s through 110s is solid enough. But then almost everything after (with some exceptions) is kinda 👎 to me.

#I get a different result every time #but I feel pretty good about this one #I went nuts with the ties #everybody’s got something to hide and why don’t we do it in the road are basically the same song to me #but they wound up separated by 8 ranks jusf because I had no real preference between that whole stretch at 122 #some of my preferences are extremely arbitrary I’ll admit #I have a big soft spot for With The Beatles stuff bc I heard it so young

i have genuinely been very productive today and that’s a very big deal for me!

i have not, however, packed or cleaned out the fridge or finished the dishes. and i leave for the airport in 13 hours. i need to do those things

#the way I’ve been cleaning all day cause I left everything for one day lmao #my room is clean and my bathroom is clean #i cleaned the floors of the kitchen which was kinda silly since I haven’t done anything else but whatever #oh I also organized my shelf in the kitchen which was very fulfilling #I don’t think I’m gonna have enough time to organize my desk which is sad cause I wanted to set EVERYTHING up perfect for future boom but #hey. this is still the nicest it’s all been since I moved in in September so 🤷🏼#I also have a three hour bus ride (plus Lyfts/taxis on both sides of the bus cause it’s not direct) and THEN a flight tmrw so it’s gonna be #a longass day tmrw #oh shit I need to make sure someone can pick me up at the airport when I get there tmrw. I’d really prefer to not be stranded (or pay for #another frickin Lyft). anyway. everybody root for me and my traveling #packing also involves folding my laundry which is just rude #but I’ve turned on critical role cause I got sick of listening to music all day so at least there’s that #the one benefit of missing last weeks episode is that now I get to listen to it #(and I’m gonna miss tmrw’s cause I’m gonna be on an airplane 😭)#life of a boomerang

#It's so weird it's like everybody got this Handbook where they were able to have their first kiss or their first relationship as a child #And it's so easy for these people who are my age and have had multiple axes or are currently in a healthy relationship with someone #But for some reason I just can't seem to find somebody #And as much as I would love to go out and look or have some online dating site due to my current situation I just can't #And I've just sort of had enough of people saying that it happens at some point and they would prefer if they had never had a relationship #But that's a bit of a pisstake considering they don't really understand what it's like to have all of your peers understand what it's like #to be in relationships and have people flirt with them or hold their hands or kiss them or want to be with thsm #or do general couply things with them #And you just feel like some kind of stupid outlier who will never understand because no one seems to want you that way #its just fucking annoying every single time i meet someone i always think it might finally be a shared experience but no #everyone has it figured out #except me i gues #s #and i cant stand people saying theyd just fuck off no you wouldnt #its lonely it feels like shit you feel irrelevant you feel stupid and unloveable because for some reason youre the only one and it feels #like its never gonna change so no no you do not wish you were liks that again because it feels like absolute shit and i hate it #i just know itll reach a point where i get too old to be a newbie to this kind of stuff and im worried thats gonna affect my chances of #having a partner at that point. meeting peoples really hard and connecting with thems way harder but everyone else seems to just have this #ability that i dont. everybody can pull somebody #and i just dont have that and it makes me so upset #sorry #I really went on a vent style tangent there and I didn't mean to #ill tag it as one now #vent #tw vent
