i know you're not catched up yet but what are you're favourite one piece arcs?
Hey Anon! Right, I'm not caught up yet, for now I just started Punk Hazard, which I believe is the start of the Dressrosa saga (I use this to navigate through all the many arcs, superarcs and sagas designation).
So considering where I'm at, this is my ranking of the superarcs of One Piece, from fave to least favorite:
Water Seven/Enies Lobby: currently that's for me the peak of One Piece on every aspect (art, writing, character dynamics, etc). Couldn't stop reading, cried my eyes out and also squealed every few pages, it had it all: Merry's demise, Usopp vs Luffy, Robin's past and fears, meeting Franky, the first direct defeat of the world government, etc.
Alabasta : the arc that made me fall in love with One Piece. I think it took me a week to read from Alabasta to the end of Enies Lobby in December 2022. I was completely drowning in it. I still miss Vivi by the way.
Skypeia : not a fan fave from what I gathered, but this arc was original and kicked ass, so I loved it !
Impel down & Marineford : amazing art and action, awesome new and returning characters, incredible double page spreads everywhere but 1) I missed Luffy's crew T_T ; 2) I spoiled myself about Ace's true identity and his fate way before, so I think the emotional part of these arcs was lost on me ; 3) I would have rather had some parts of the Luffy/Ace/Sabo & Dadan flashback before or during the arcs: I think I would have felt sadder about the broken bond between Luffy and Ace because I would have understood more what linked them
Arlong Park : the arc that made me go from a casual bedtime reader to "uh, that's interesting" and start reading more intently. Also it's a pretty meaningful arc : it's the first time the straw hats started to work together as a crew, we got stronger hints that the world government was a very antagonistic figure, Nami's backstory hit me right in the feels, etc
To the grand Line: Meeting Vivi and Chopper were nice and I loved the overall vibe on the going Merry between the crewmates that was "RIDE OR DIE!!? WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO??" !
Thriller Bark; Romance dawn: I enjoyed meeting Brook, but I wasn't a big fan of Moria's powers and the whole intrigue happening on Thriller Bark felt a bit too much for me. Loved the friendship between Nami and Lola though. Same for Romance Dawn, it was mostly the characters' introduction so no real plot yet, but it was very fun.
Sabaody Archipelago & Amazon Lily : a lot happened and I think I got a bit overwhelmed between meeting the supernovae, the celestial dragons, learning more about slavery and racism relating to fishmen and merfolk. Then everything exploded all at once (literally, though I'm thankful for Luffy's punch) and I was like "????!!!" at how fast it escalated. For Amazon Lily, meeting Boa Hancock and learning even more about slavery & celestial dragons was interesting, but otherwise that's it.
Fishman Island: gosh I'm so torn about this arc, because I was SO looking forward to it after the timeskip and... it took me like 3 weeks to read through it because it was a bit boring. The worst part is, I absolutely loved the whole premise, especially with Queen Otohime trying to end racism for her people, Hody being basically Arlong 2.0, the callback to Nami's backstory, Jinbe's amazing character joining the crew but... idk, I wasn't sold on the whole battle with the Noah ship and Shirahoshi being one of the most powerful and sought after characters for being Poseidon. It was okay, but I think I had too much expectations.
Long ring long land : aside from meeting Aokiji, I don't see the point of this arc.
I hope it answers your question. Have a good day Anon!

My Thoughts on the New MHA Opening and Ending
Tumblr media
I have thoughts, and I will share them because oh boy if I don’t get this out I’m gonna explode
Vague Spoilers for the manga (up to chapter 258 and vigilantes) because I discuss the upcoming arcs, but I don’t discuss any major plot points in detail. Still, proceed with caution if you’re anime only
Keep in mind, this OP and ED will cover the Endeavour Agency Arc and the MVA Arc, so I will be judging them accordingly.
First, the OP
Tumblr media
This is a good OP... in theory (that’s going to become my catchphrase for this post). It’s nice to look at and flows pretty well, but my biggest problem is that it doesn’t do it’s job. An OP is supposed to be a sort of... summary (?) of the Cour it plays for. That means any cool plot points, emotional beats, and important characters should be featured in some way, shape, or form. We’ll talk about that more later, but first let’s discuss the music.
The song is really good. I have a feeling it will continue to grow on me as I listen to it more often, but yeah my first impression is that the song sounds great. My only complaint about the music itself is that it ends kind of abruptly (I noticed this is the JT opening too). The previous openings used to have a bit of instrumental to “play us out” and lead us to the end card, but this one feels like it ends very suddenly and unnaturally.
As for the visuals...
Tumblr media
Yeah alright I’ll admit, the visuals are stunning... in theory. I appreciate the variety in backgrounds and colours, it makes the OP really interesting to look at. This was actually one of my biggest problems with the JT Opening, it all took place on the training grounds, so there was no variety (everything was metal tubes with a blue sky, with only 3 shots set somewhere different). I appreciate the style of this OP.
But like I said, that’s only in theory, as in, through screenshots these are all pleasing to look at. The pacing of this OP is wild, and I truly don’t know who to blame for this.
That sunset shot above? It lasts approximately 12 seconds, zooming in every few to make it seem like something is happening (when in reality it’s still the same poses, angles, etc). While there’s nothing wrong with a nice, drawn out shot, it becomes irritating when compared to the pacing of the rest of this op.
Tumblr media
At the 41 second mark, we are given the shot above. It has flowed directly from the previous sunset scene. We still have not moved away from the image of the trio (aside from the opening shot and the title card) yet we’re approaching the halfway mark of the OP.
Tumblr media
The next shot is the MLA, which lasts about 5 seconds. Ok, perfect. Not too long, but also not short enough to be confusing. It cuts away a little fast once the dude on the far left appears, but does anyone actually know who that is? No, seriously, I’m asking. I don’t remember his name and he’s not on the wiki, so I can only assume he’s not important. Therefore, it’s not all that bad if the shot cuts away shortly after he comes into frame. The audience is able to take in the scene without having to pause...
Tumblr media
... And then the problems start
While this shot is fine in theory, it pans up fast and  cuts away quickly. You know how hard it was for me to get this screenshot? Really hard. You want to know why I struggled so much? Because, due to the timing of the cut and the way it pans upwards, it’s almost impossible to pause on Dabi’s face. I literally had to go frame by frame to get it, because he’s in shot for so little time that naturally pausing is guaranteed to miss him.
When watching this in real time (without pausing) the cut away makes you feel as if you missed something because “something was there, I just couldn’t register what because now it’s gone”. Unlike Compress, who wears a very colourful coat you can recognize the entire time, Dabi’s pants are more blended into the background.
It also doesn’t help that this shot is literally composed to draw your attention away from Dabi until the last possible second. Due to framing, your eye is naturally drawn to the brightly coloured Toga in the foreground, making it super easy to miss Dabi in the back (until, of course, his bright face appears and contrasts against the background, drawing your eye just in time for the scene to change, leaving you to wonder who or what you missed).
I know this sounds like nitpicking, but this shot is the only group shot we get of the League, and is also the start of a seriously weird trend for the villains in this OP getting the short end of the stick.
Tumblr media
Anyways, then we get what I’ll call “The Carousel Shot” in which every Class 1A kid shows up and poses dramatically, as if they were on a carousel. It’s a lovely sequence and I really enjoy watching it but... why is it in this OP?
Seriously, this is a genuine question. Class 1A barely shows up in the Endeavour Agency Arc, and NONE of the students are in MVA. This sequence (not counting the three boys at the end) lasts 8 seconds. Why is this much time dedicated to characters who are barely in the arc? (Unless Studio Bones extends their work studies into fuller plot lines which oh my gosh please don’t do that, or if they do, do it quick).
Tumblr media
We then get what I call the “Oh God I Blinked And Missed Everything” sequence, which lasts 3 seconds (not including the longer, moving shot of Shigaraki at the end) and features NINE INDIVIDUAL IMAGES, none of which are related to each other. Not only is this 3 images per second, but the fact that they are all unrelated means you can’t even use previous information to fill in the blanks.
What do I mean by that? Well, imagine if I show you 9 images of various pro heroes posing. If I play that in 3 seconds you’ll absolutely miss some of them, but as long as you catch some you’ll still get an idea of what I’m trying to show to you. Your brain is able to fill in the gaps that “I recognized 4 pro heroes, therefore the rest must have also been pros” even if you didn’t register every single frame.
That doesn’t work if every frame features a completely different subject. The shots in this sequence vary so widely that it’s impossible to find a through line. Some feature multiple characters, some feature one, some are closeups, some are super far away, some are character’s we know, others are characters we don’t. It’s impossible to get a solid read on what you’re being shown.
Now, again, there’s nothing wrong with these super quick shots... in theory. The problem comes from the fact that these shots are the only indicators for some of the major themes that will be explored during this Cour (like Twice’s growth and young Shigaraki).
That being said, let’s move away from criticism and talk about speculation, because hidden amongst this sequence are two... interesting images.
Tumblr media
This All Might one is very reminiscent of the shot in Chapter 257, where Aizawa and All Might have a conversation while staring up at the stars. However, this is technically the start of the “War Arc” (or the “prologue”, if that’s what you want to call it), so this might indicate that we’re going to get farther into the series than a lot of us guessed.
(Many people suspected we’d get to that cliffhanger at the start of the season (if you read the manga you know the one), but after seeing the pacing for JT a lot of us assumed we’d be lucky to even finish Endeavour Agency. It seems we’re back to the cliffhanger now though lol).
Tumblr media
This is another really interesting shot because it’s indicative of Shirakumo, meaning we might get to see Aizawa and Mic confront him some time this Cour (this also makes sense, since this confrontation technically happens before that All Might scene I mentioned in the previous paragraph).
But the cat specifically is a really strange addition. That cat is named Sushi and, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Sushi is ever mentioned in the main series. I think he’s only in Vigilantes.
This might just be a little Easter Egg for Vigilante readers, but I’m personally hoping that they’ll add at least a few Vigilante shots in there to really tug at the heart strings. I’d say I want a whole Vigilante episode but I don’t think they have the time (unless they really cram MVA, which I do NOT want).
Tumblr media
I don’t have much to say about the last bit of the OP. The action shot between the 3 boys was nice, and it follows the sort of narrative through line they established from the early shot of them sitting at the sunset. I also like the shot of Endeavour fading in to replace All Might, even if it’s very simple.
Tumblr media
But I want to talk about an overarching problem I touched upon earlier in that villain shot: the way the villains are handled in this OP.
This is a good OP... in theory. The problem is, it doesn’t represent half the arcs in the cour! Every shot of the League is so rushed that you can barely register that they were on screen before they’re gone.
I have no idea how many Episodes Endeavour Agency will take, but I’d assume 3 (4 if you count the Christmas episode). 12 episodes for this Cour minus 3 for Endeavour Agency = 9 episodes left. If we truly do get the prologue for the War Arc (and if we assume it’s only 1 episode) that leaves us with 8 villains episodes.
8/12 episodes (aka two thirds of the Cour) will likely be about the villains. And yet they’re pushed to the background so hard in this OP.
I want to dream, and I want to believe that this OP is going to magically change when MVA starts. The song fits super well, and I can imagine like an inversion of the OP but from the Villain side! Wouldn’t that be neat? Imagine right after the “it’s alright” part Shigaraki just freaking decays the title card... oh man that would be so cool. But, alas, I highly doubt they’d do that.
Side rant, but you know what was so fun about MVA in the manga? It’s that, for 21 chapters, we leave the kids behind and the villains become our protagonists. Suddenly Shigaraki is the one we’re rooting for, suddenly we’re learning backstories for everyone, and suddenly we find ourselves just as attached to the villains as we are to the kids. It’s an inversion that’s SO RARE to find, and I think many people (myself included) were hoping it would be reflected in the OP.
A big part of being the protagonist means featuring heavily in the OP, and a lot of us just wanted the villains to get that honour, even if only once. As is, the OP still treats them as the antagonists when... really they aren’t. Not right now, at least.
Tumblr media
So yeah, final thoughts on the OP are that it’s good, it’s just not very representative of the arcs it’s supposed to cover. If this was just for Endeavour Agency, I’d say it’s actually really cool, but if we assume that this is what will play for the Villain Arc, then it simply doesn’t do it’s job. And it makes me sad to say that because, again, this OP is really well done.
If I had to rate it? Hmmm
If Studio Bones actually grants my wish and creates a different visual for the Villain Arc (while using the same song) and then this version only plays for the Endeavour Agency Arc and the War Prologue? I’d give it an 8/10. It’s really good, but it could use a few more elements that are clearly derived from the Agency Arc (ahem, Todoroki siblings).
But if this is the OP that will play for the entire Cour? a 6.5/10. It’s nice, but it’s not representative of one of the arcs it’s going to cover. And, unlike other arcs like Pro Hero or Summer Exams, the villain Arc is so important and takes up so much time that it honestly feels like a bit of a disservice.
Now for the Ending
Tumblr media
I want to say that I appreciate how soft this ending starts. This cour will likely feature a lot of episodes that end on... heavier themes, and I think the sight of peaceful, falling raindrops is the perfect way to let the audience process their emotions before starting the ending in earnest.
The song itself is very nice, and I like that it’s a bit slower than the more recent endings.
(Side note, but the FUNNIEST moment in the entire series is when Sir Nighteye dies because it’s so emotional and everyone is standing around his bed in his heartwrentching silence, only for the ending to come BLARING IN out of no where. If you forgot how jarringly hilarious it was, go listen to the Eri ending and tell me that’s not the funniest thing this series ever did. Anyways yeah I’m glad that’s not gonna happen this Cour).
Tumblr media
This ending is a bit all over the place in terms of it’s visuals, but honestly I think it works. Most endings usually have a theme tying them together (all the Class 1A girls, a fantasy AU, old photographs, planning a party, etc) but this ending’s theme is a bit harder to identify.
That being said, I think it’s just supposed to show everyone going about their day. It’s calm, it’s peaceful, and it’s just very sweet to think about
Tumblr media
I like this shot. Actually, scratch that, I like this whole sequence. I enjoy anything that allows Class 1A to chill and have fun.
Tumblr media
Hawks is featured quite heavily in this ending which, fair. He’s pretty important in this arc.
I really love the shot where Endeavour immediately switches to Hawks, I thought that was a lot of fun, and very good symbolism on how Hawks wants to be like Endeavour. I also love all the shots of Baby Hawks, because it’s adorable.
Tumblr media
Something about this shot is just so cute. It’s the little domestic things like waiting for a bus that make this ending feel... idk the word, real? It shows a side of the characters that we’ll never see in the episodes, but we know have to exist.
Like yes, of course the kids have to wait for the bus. We never see it, but of course there are those moments of quiet. Agh, I love it.
Tumblr media
The villains also make an appearance and I’m very happy about that (I’d love to see more of the villains just chilling around, I think they deserve it). I kind of wish they weren’t sitting in a dark room for the sake of being edgy, since I think it would be nice to see the villains just... sort of existing, but honestly it’s still a nice shot. I also like how this shot sort of mirrors the first one with Class 1A (someone coming in while everyone else is sitting and waiting for them).
Tumblr media
That being said, as much as I love looking at Dabi and his stupid face (affectionate)... why is Dabi the one getting the closeup?
Mind you, endings don’t need to be connected to their Cours (they can be, like the Eri one, but they don’t have to be). But this ending does seem to be connected to the arcs it intends to cover, given all the Hawks appearances, the boys wearing their work study scarves, etc.
So, I ask again, why Dabi? Out of the six League members, we learn the backstory for four of them in this arc (Shigaraki, Toga, Twice, and we very briefly learn about Spinner). The only two left out are Dabi and Compress.
I can only assume they chose Dabi because he’s constantly in contact with Hawks, and therefore that makes him important? If the OP told us anything, it’s that Bones values the Endeavour Agency Arc over the Villain Arc lol...
... Oh my gosh please tell me that’s not actually the reason Dabi is focused on here BONES WAI-
Tumblr media
Anyways, the ending comes to a close with Hawks watching over the kids and Endeavour. The relaxing time is done, it’s time for work studies.
Overall impression? It’s great. It’s hard to screw up an ending, so as long as you have something pretty on screen, it’s wonderful.
I’ll give this a 9/10

Back at it again with my self-indulgent comic posts. This time! It’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #3, perhaps the most tonally-distinct entry yet, with shades of The Twilight Zone.
Spoilers!
So, as mentioned, this issue is the most deliberate in terms of both its pacing and its tone, IMO.
What is that tone, you ask?
To quote Alex Danvers, from “Midvale”: Hello, darkness.
THE STORY:
Kara and Ruthye are still looking for Krem Clues in the alien town of Maypole.
(Which is actually just Small Town, USA, complete with vintage 50s aesthetics.)
But the locals are clearly hiding something! So Kara and Ruthye continue to investigate, and they eventually discover what it was that the residents of Maypole were so keen to keep hidden.
Genocide, basically.
As I said, this issue struck me as very Twilight Zone; a genre story involving the build-up to a dark twist, all set against the backdrop of an idyllic small town. (Think, like, “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” but instead of focusing on the Red Scare, it’s classism and racism.)
The wealthier blue aliens kicked all of the purple aliens out of town, and when space pirates showed up to pillage and plunder, the blue aliens made a deal with them: the lives of the purple aliens in exchange for their safety.
Which is where the episodic story connects to the larger mission; it was Krem who suggested the trade, and then joined up with the Brigands (space pirates) when he was freed by the blue aliens.
The issue ends with no tidy resolution to the terrible things Kara and Ruthye discovered, but they do have a lead on where to find Krem, now, as well as Barbond’s Brigands.
KARA-CTERIZATION:
Ironically, it’s here, in the darkest chapter yet, that we get the closest to what might be considered ‘classic’ Kara.
Which I think comes down to that aforementioned deliberate pace--this issue is a little slower, a little quieter. It gives the characters some room to breathe.
That’s not to say Crusty Kara is gone. Oh no. She is still very much Crusty. XD
But anyways. A list! Of Kara moments I loved!
I mentioned a few of these in a prior post when the preview pages came out: I like the moment where Kara blows down the guy’s house of cards, and I like that the action is echoed later in the issue when she grabs the mayor’s desk and tosses it aside. A nice visual representation of the escalation of Kara being, like. Done with these creeps. (Creeps is an understatement but you get the idea.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another one from the preview pages: Kara explains to Ruthye that her super hearing won’t necessarily help her detect a lie, especially if she’s dealing with an alien species she’s not familiar with.
It not only reveals her level of competence and understanding of her super powers, it also shows that, you know. She’s a thinker. She’s smart.
Amazing! Showing, rather than telling us, that Kara is smart! Without mentioning the science guild at all wow hey wow.
(Sorry, pointed criticism of the SG show fandom.)
Anyways.
I dig the PJs!
And Kara catching the bullet! Not only are the poses and character acting great, it’s also a neat bit of panel composition:
Tumblr media
We start with Ruthye’s POV, and then move to the wide shot of the room. The panel where Kara actually catches the bullet is down and to the side of the wide shot panel--we move our eyes the way her body/arm would have to move to intercept the bullet. Physicality in static, 2D images!
Also, like. It’s a very tense moment, life-or-death, but. Ruthye’s wide-eyed surprise at the bullet in Kara’s hand? Kind of adorable.
I was pretty much prepared for the page of Kara shielding Ruthye from the gunfire to be the highlight--it was one of the first pages King shared and I was like, ‘yeah, YEAH.’ But, shockingly? The TRUE highlight of the issue?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where do I BEGIN?!?!
EVERYTHING. About this moment. Is lovely.
From Kara holding Ruthye above the bench to explaining the concept of a piggyback ride, to telling her:
“I’m going to hold my hands here, and these hands can turn coal into diamonds, so they’re not going to let go. I’m going to keep you safe.”
HNNNNNNNNNNNG.
Ruthye’s narration--about how Kara had avoided flying as she was concerned it would freak Ruthye out--just adds a whole additional layer of YES, GOOD, YES, and her line on that splash page is great: “You see, all that time, she was worried about me.”
HNNNNNNNNNNNG. AGAIN.
To say nothing of the STELLAR ARTWORK.
And SPEAKING of that stellar artwork, Evely and Lopes continue to knock it out of the park. Each issue is distinct and beautifully crafted, a true joy to look at.
Before I jump into more of the art, a few final notes of character stuff in general.
Ruthye is the one most affected by the experience in Maypole, as she can’t comprehend how a society of people that look so nice and gentle and peaceful could have been party to such a horrible act.
One of the big criticisms of the book thus far is that Supergirl is not the main character, and I guess I can agree with that observation. Typically, in Western media, the main character is the one who goes through the most change in the story.
And, yeah. That’s Ruthye.
As I was reading the end, where Ruthye sits on the curb and Kara hugs her, I was imagining how the scene would’ve played, had King stuck with the original idea for the series: Kara as the one learning to be tough/experiencing all of this for the first time, and while I think that could certainly work...
I continue to appreciate that King literally flipped the script; that Kara, especially in this issue, is like, ‘I’ve seen this, I know this,’ as opposed to being the one going through a loss of innocence.
*Marge Simpson voice* I just think it’s neat!
Because Kara’s been a teen in DC comics for so long--ever since she was reintroduced to the main DCU continuity, actually--so this is all brand new territory, here. Having an older Kara who’s SEEN SOME STUFF.
(Alsoooooo, since Bendis made the destruction of Krypton not just inaction and climate disaster, but rather, genocide, and the subtext of a Kryptonian diaspora text, the waitress’ derogatory comment regarding the the destruction of Kryton, as well as Kara picking up the bad vibes the entire time, suggests not just a broad commentary on discrimination in all its forms, but specifically allegorical anti-Semitism. The purple aliens being forced out of their homes and into substandard living conditions, then the blue aliens--their neighbors and once-fellow residents--essentially allowing the space pirates to kill them, making them literal scapegoats, Kara discovering the remains of the purple aliens, and Ruthye’s horror at the ‘banality of evil’...yes. A case could be made, I think.)
(Which would probably require a post unto itself and a lot more in-depth discussion, nuance, and cited sources.)
(Should mention that King has brought up that both he and Orlando--the other Supergirl writer he talked to--are Jewish, and for him personally, that shaped his views on Kara’s origin story.)
I guess my point is that this issue is perhaps not as out-of-left-field as some might think, and just because there isn’t as obvious an arc for Kara, doesn’t mean there isn’t some sharp character work at play.
(I could be WAY OFF, of course, and I’m not suggesting it’s a clear 1:1 comparison. I’d actually really love to hear King talk about this issue in particular.)
Anyways.
Here’s the final page, which I think works, because as I mentioned before, there is no easy answer/quick wrap-up to the story of Maypole:
Tumblr media
THE ART:
I mean. How many times can I just shout ‘ART! AAAARRRRRRRRRRRTTTT!’ before it gets old?
I dunno, but I guess we’re gonna FIND OUT.
There are some panels in this issue that I just. Like ‘em! From a purely artistic standpoint! Because they’re so good!
Tumblr media
Like, I just really love the way Kara is drawn in that top panel. Her troubled, confused expression, the colors of the fading light, the HAIR.
Evely draws the best hair. I know I’ve said this before. I don’t care. I will continue to say it, because it continues to be true.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The issue I find myself running up against when I make these posts is that I really don’t want to post whole pages, as that’s generally frowned upon (re: pirating etc.) but with something like this, you just can’t appreciate it in panel-by-panel snippets.
(Guided View on digital reading platforms is a BANE and a POX I say!)
Anyways.
LOVE the implied movement of the cape settling as Kara speeds in and stops.
And, obviously, Kara flicking the bullet away is just. A+.
And the EYES, man. LOPES’ COLORS ON THE EYES???!?! BEAUTIFUL.
Also, should note the lettering! The more rounded letters for the ‘WOOSH’ of Kara’s speed (and, earlier, the super breath) work nicely, and contrast with the angular, violent BLAMS of the gunshots.
And, I gotta say, the editor is doing a really great job of not cluttering up the artwork with all the caption boxes. Which is no small task.
(I assume the editor is placing them, as editors usually handle word balloon/caption box placement, but I suppose it could be Evely? Sometimes the artist handles it. Either way, whoever’s taking care of all the text, EXCELLENT WORK! BRAVO!)
Okay I think that’s everything.
Ah, nope, wait.
MISC.
Just a funny observation, more than anything else: Superman: Red and Blue dropped this week, and King had a story in there, “The Special” (which was very good, btw.) Both Lois and the waitress swear a lot so I’m beginning to think that this is just how King writes dialogue for any adult character who isn’t Clark. XD
This is absolutely a personal preference but when Kara was like, “And my name IS Supergirl,” I was like nooooo. I know King is trying to simplify all of the conflicting origin stories and lore but I LIKE KARA DANVERS, SIR. XD
It’s almost assuredly a cash-grab/an attempt for DC to get all the money it can out of a book they don’t have much confidence in, but I like the cardstock covers! Very classy, much Strange Adventures.
(OH my gosh, can you imagine that issue 1 cover with spot gloss???? Basically the only way you could possibly improve on it.)
Okay NOW I’m done. For real. XD NEXT TIME: Kara and Ruthye go after Krem and the Brigands!

BnHA Chapter 262: A Fierce Bad Rabbit
Previously on BnHA: The hospital raid squad, which had two jobs consisting of (1) not letting Ujiko get away, and (2) not letting any of the Noumu break free to go ravage the countryside, impressively failed at both of these tasks (or so I assume) in a remarkably short amount of time. The EndeavorZawaMicLock squad were all occupied with having a very destructive fight in the hospital lobby, leaving my girl Miruko, Goddess of Courage and First of Her Name, to do pretty much all the heavy lifting, which, fine!! Except that Ujiko remembered that he had a bunch of High End Noumus just floating there waiting to be activated, and he was all “!!” and fucking activated them, and like five of them went after Miruko all at once and smashed her into a bunch of machinery and glass tubes, which frankly should have killed her but it didn’t because she’s a fucking boss. But now it’s just her (and Crust, who might do something too, but for now JURY’S STILL OUT) against all these guys while Ujiko speeds off to grab Tomura and abscond. So basically everything that could go wrong has already gone wrong so UH. OKAY.
Today on BnHA: Miruko kicks ass. Then she checks her watch and sees that there’s still time for her to kick more ass, so she does. Then there is still time, because this chapter is all about her kicking ass! So she kicks even more ass!! It’s great!! I have no complaints!! She decapitates a man with her thighs!! That’s a thing that really happens!! Also she loses an arm but WHO HASN’T LOST AND/OR BROKEN THEIR ARMS IN THIS SERIES, REALLY. Everyone is doing it. Somehow she manages to make it look cool because Miruko. Miruko can strangle a man with a cordless phone. She can kill two stones with one bird. Miruko makes onions cry. Death once had a near-Miruko experience. Mirukoooooooo. Anyway the chapter ends with Skeptic warning everyone at The Ol’ Villain Hotel that the heroes are coming, so basically WELCOME BACK, EVERYONE, this manga is back with a vengeance.
guys I’m gonna try to do this recap fast because I’m seeing Heroes Rising tonight at 7:30! and I’m so excited! and for those that asked, yes I do plan on doing some kind of write-up about it, though it’ll all be from memory after the fact so we’ll see how that goes. but !! I’ve waited 84 years for this ahhhhh but anyway so in the meantime let’s see what new and creative ways our heroes are finding to screw this up even more
(ETA: I did it but this thing isn’t edited for shit lol. after I get back I’ll give it a more thorough readthrough so sorry if I missed any really obvious errors! also there are probably way more exclamation points than usual which may or may not be a plus or minus.)
look at this helpful announcement
Tumblr media
High End Noumu approaching, everyone. you have been warned. just in case you somehow failed to notice?? IT’S RIGHT THERE Y’ALL LOOK OUT
lmao FINALLY
Tumblr media
MORE HEROES. YOU ALL CERTAINLY TOOK YOUR FUCKING TIME, but hey welcome to the party. and none of that “I don’t see how that’s a party” sassy shit either. you all know what I’m talking about so get out there and have fun
so they’re standing there all “it’s a talking Noumu!” and YEAH. that’s what I’ve been fucking trying to tell you. thank god someone finally fucking said it out loud so that hopefully the EZML squad can finally take notice of this as well. like guys. bigger fish?! get to frying!!
so now Crust is all “there are more of them ahead, Miruko’s in danger!” which, again, thanks for finally letting everyone else in on this formerly exclusive scoop there pal. ‘preciate it
I... really do not understand Crust’s quirk at all. I’m just gonna own up to it
Tumblr media
what is this. what does “zuga” mean fx-wise. why did those scale things on his arms get so big. what are they made of. what’s happening
oh it turns out that if you scroll and read more instead of pausing for ages to ask dumb questions, the thing you were asking about might actually be explained in great detail in the very next panel
Tumblr media
but what are they made out of though. and why “Crust”?? ah well I suppose that’s a question for someone who actually cares more than I do
by the way the quality of this scan is actually really good so far, I gotta say. we’re only two pages in, true, but they either cleaned this up really nicely, or this was a much higher-quality scan than usual. either way I am appreciative!
lol this poor Noumu is shook
Tumblr media
what did I name you two weeks ago, again? Rusty?? anyways he’s doing his best you guys. gambare my dude, though actually you do need to die, so that’s too bad though
Crust is all “you pitiful living corpse!” with tears in his eyes because he’s dramatic! but jokes aside I do appreciate that he has compassion for these monsters who are all still basically innocent victims at the end of the day
does anyone else actually hear that funny-sounding anime narrator guy in your head nowadays when you read panels like this lol
Tumblr media
I can hear the voice so clearly and it’s great
only ten times the strength of a normal human, guys. that’s actually not that bad. I’m only half joking lol. because obviously your average hero is going to be much stronger than a so-called “normal” person too, yes? and I’m pretty sure Miruko has the strength of like 30 humans but I may be overestimating her just slightly but am I though
oh lol I apparently did not learn my lesson about doing commentary before I’m done reading hahaha
Tumblr media
so High Ends are on a different tier of their own above even the “high” tier. well that’s just. yeah that sounds more like the “we’re still fucked” update that I was expecting
oh wait, seriously??
Tumblr media
are you telling me that all of the High Ends were actually cultivated from villains? so maybe not completely innocent, then? is this Horikoshi’s way of trying to make us feel marginally better about the fact that the heroes are shortly henceforth going to have to exterminate these guys with great prejudice? I mean they’re still basically slaves to Ujiko’s programming now though so that sucks
also I missed this earlier but the narration here basically just confirmed that Noumu are all made from corpses. which I kind of suspected, but the still-very-much-alive Tomura would then be a glaring contradiction to that, no? or is that why he’s so special. anyway I do appreciate that we’re getting a lot of much-awaited answers in this Noumu arc, but some of this is also just raising more questions. gotta be patient I guess
speaking of Tomura, Ujiko’s back in the Tomura room, so. I assume some absconding is soon to occur
oh shit!! so there’s another panel explaining that “artificial transplant of quirks” requires surgery and then three months of stabilization time following that. sooooo I’m pretty sure this mofo just confirmed that he gave Tomura some shiny additional new quirks, so that’s nice! that’s real fucking great! I know we were all eyeing Tomura skeptically and thinking to ourselves “this is almost just right, but needs more death”
wait, what?
Tumblr media
“I was already dead anyway” meaning that he knows there’s no way out for him? and so he doesn’t have a secret way out of the lab?? ??? can that really be true?? our intrepid heroes actually did their job right and the villains had no contingency plan?? oh my god I am so terrified of letting my guard down lmao I still refuse to believe this at all
and is that Tomura who’s at 70% stabilization? that would seem to fit with the timeline we were given. holy shit is he unboxing him early fsdfkjalsdk are we about to go from “fucked” to “exorbitantly fucked”
and why am I strangely excited about it sob!!
HAHAHAHA OH GOD
Tumblr media
so this is how liberty dies. with a beep
also fuck you all, now it’s at 71%?! couldn’t leave it at a nice even number for us, could you? you just had to throw that extra percent in there at the last moment to fuck with us all
anyway did you all catch how fucking ripped he was there though? like boiiii whaaaaat. clearly his abs are already at 100%
OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
DOES NOTHING FUCKING FAZE THIS BEAUTIFUL, RULE-BREAKING MOTH
HAHAHA
Tumblr media
RIGHT??
HOLY FUCKING MOLY
Tumblr media
friendly reminder that Dabi was all good and ready to throw down with both Endeavor and Hawks (who were admittedly weakened by that point) that one time a while back, but then Miruko showed up and he was all “lol nope I think the fuck not” and warped out of there. Dabi, whose quirk is so powerful that its only apparent downside is the fact that it roasts him alive as well. that Dabi took one look at Miruko and decided he likes having his spine intact and fucking vamoosed, because that is the smart fucking thing to do when this girl shows up smiling at you the way that she is smiling at these Noumu now
anyway. fucking Ujiko knew he needed at least five High Ends to even stand a chance of slowing her down, is all I’m saying. y’all better respect the FUCK out of Miruko, everyone. it’s the law
anyway. so. quirk: bunny. can smash rl gud
Tumblr media
someone needs to ask Horikoshi the fuck kind of rabbits he has been hanging out with. applied that “and more!” part pretty fucking liberally huh. WHO DID YOU SAY TRIX WERE FOR AGAIN, CHILDREN??
Tumblr media
NOBODY THROWS MIRUKO IN THE BRIAR PATCH AND GETS AWAY WITH IT
fffwhatttttttttt
Tumblr media
that would be our good buddy Max Rebo. so that’s definitely not an elephant trunk-like thing then. we may need a new name for you
on a side note, I never thought we’d meet another character who looks more like Katsuki than Mitsuki does, and yet every damn week Miruko is proving me wrong. goddamn she is great
lmao wait maybe that wasn’t Max at all, but Jester. because this is clearly Max over here
Tumblr media
so Girl!Noumu is a water bender, Jester can do... something weird with his hair, and Max can do anything an elephant can do if that elephant was also powered by steam. nice
HAHAHA BUT MIRUKO IS ALL “KICK!!!”
Tumblr media
HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK!!!
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT. I WOULD READ AN ENTIRE MANGA OF JUST THIS LMAO THIS IS TOO MUCH ADRENALINE I CAN’T
JESTER’S WEIRD SPIKY ROCK HAIR IS SLICING HER ARM AND SHE’S ALL “THAT HURTS YOU JERK!!!!” AND GETTING READY TO FREAKING PILEDRIVE HIM I CAN’T, THOUGH!?
SDKFJLDKSJFLKJ
Tumblr media
HER FATHER PEPPY TAUGHT HER THAT. BARREL ROLL ALL OVER THESE BITCHES!!
WHAT THE FUCK
Tumblr media
FUCKING QUIRKS!!!! THOUGH!!!! WILLLLLLLLLD
SDKFJLAS;DHK OH MY GOD OH SHIT
Tumblr media
real talk this is the scariest fucking quirk I’ve ever seen I was like what the fuck looking at her arm and then I saw him doing the twisty hand gesture and just. fuck. YOU’RE NOT CRIMSON RIOT AT ALL YOU’RE SOME PSYCHO TELEKINETIC BITCH AND I FUCKING HATE YOU!!
NO!!!!!
Tumblr media
fuck fuck fuck. I’M SURE HER ARM’S GOING TO BE JUST FINE AND DANDY AFTER THIS GUYS, DON’T WORRY. THIS MANGA HAS SUCH A SERENE AND TRANQUIL HISTORY WITH ARMS. ISN’T THAT RIGHT DEKU
though on the plus side, if she does lose that arm we can count on her to somehow instantly become like 50x more attractive, which I’m pretty sure might cause the very fabric of the universe to unravel but it would be worth it
(ETA: SHE DID AND IT WAS!!)
MADAME PRESIDENT!! MY QUEEN
Tumblr media
OH HELL YERRRRRR
fucking hell guys I’m running out of exclamation points and excited things to say here. AND SHE JUST KEEPS GOING! LIKE HER MOM THE ENERGIZER BUNNY BEFORE HER
Tumblr media
I’M SORRY UJIKO DID YOU THINK FIVE HIGH ENDS WAS ENOUGH?! MAYBE NEXT TIME WE MAKE IT TEN, HOW ABOUT THAT. FUCK OFF
lmao holy shit I can’t stop laughingggg
Tumblr media
well Crimson, at least you get to die happy. is she literally going to crush his face between her thighs. is this entire chapter just one big prank on me. if Miruko was the protagonist would this series have ended in the first chapter. trick question, the answer is it never would have started to begin with because she would have killed All for One years ago!! how much would it cost to hire Miruko to come kick away all of my problems for me
hello good afternoon everyone this is a real panel that really happened in this manga
Tumblr media
I don’t even know what to say about anything anymore
sob she’s all “YEAH RIGHT” and SNAPPING HIS FUCKING NECK WITH A FUCKING TRIANGLE CHOKE, THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING, FUCKING LOOK!! AT!! THIS!!!
Tumblr media
we’re not even gonna make it to 300 chapters. Horikoshi held off for as long as he could, but eventually Miruko couldn’t be contained any longer and he had to unleash her and she instantly went and reckt every last fucking bad guy out there until there was nothing left. who are the kids even going to fight. nobody that’s who. go back to school kids
SON OF A BITCH WHAT IS HAPPENING
Tumblr media
THIS IS THE MOST VIOLENT THING I HAVE EVER FUCKING SEEN AND YET SOMEHOW I SWEAR I CAN HEAR ANGELS SINGING. RESPLENDENT
SOBBING!!!!
Tumblr media
“S’POSE I SHOULD GET THIS ANNOYING THING CHECKED OUT BEFORE I BLEED TO DEATH OR SOME BULLSHIT.” WHAT AN INCONVENIENCE. JUST A FUCKING FLESH WOUND. NOBODY USES ARMS THESE DAYS ANYWAY
“IF THE ONLY WAY TO STOP YOU IS BY CRUSHING YOUR HEADS THIS WILL BE WAY EASIER THAN HOLDING BACK ON A NORMAL VILLAIN.” SOB THIS IS MIRUKO’S WORLD AND WE’RE ALL JUST BEGRUDGINGLY ALLOWED TO EXIST IN IT. MY BARONESS
DID YOU JUST TOURNIQUET YOUR DISMEMBERED FUCKING LIMB WITH YOUR OWN FUCKING HAIR ONE-HANDED FFCKCK KCKCLK JUST MIRUKO THINGS
Tumblr media
Miruko also saw Horikoshi getting ready to end the chapter after 17 pages and was like “EXCUSE YOU THERE” and he backed off because he actually likes having a fucking head thank you very much
LMAO AND NOW OF ALL TIMES WE’RE CUTTING BACK TO THE OL’ VILLAIN RESORT. SIGH
Skeptic seems to have finally cottoned on to them being in some kind of trouble. huh
Tumblr media
how does he know it was Jin who screwed up?? did he realize that Hawks betrayed them oh shit!?!
OOP HE’S SOUNDING THE ALARM
Tumblr media
AND THE CHAPTER IS ENDING. BUT I’M NOT DONE SCREAMING. AHHHHHH well anyways I’m off to watch my children kick lots of ass on the big screen. assuming I can get this posted in time with zero editing whatsoever lol I’ve got like... an hour. WE SHALL SEE!
(ETA: we did it lol just barely! this whole thing is probably a giant mess but oh well! Mirukoooooo)

Quick Break
Roxas used an illegal move to one-up Xion and finds himself at a disadvantage.
Part 2 of the Twilight Mirage series. For more updates, follow the twilight mirage tag on this blog.
Although there was no immediate threat to the worlds, aside from the lack of one specific person who all owed gratitude toward, staying on top of their fighting skills was important. No one knew when they would be called upon to be the Wielders of Light, and that in itself was more than enough reason to be ready. Roxas figured it would be best to train with Xion. Considering that they were close enough to know one another’s faults and strengths, they complemented one another. And it was easier to let off steam with someone you trusted.
Over and over, their key blades clashed, sparks flying and shouts echoing off the trees surrounding them. Leaves trembling with the force of spells ricocheting off willowy branches and anyone who was curious to know what was happening on the outskirts of the Old Mansion were wise enough to keep away. In between guarding from another one of Xion’s onslaughts and looking for an opening, Roxas’ mind began to wander. Times like this brought him back to their days as part of the Organization, the days where it wasn’t all that bad, and they had free time to do things like this.
Simply be.
At the time, he thought it was nice to have a friend. That it wasn’t odd when he’d catch himself admiring how her skin flushed pink around her nose, cheeks, and the tips of her ear. When her hair would brush against her chin and she’d tuck it back, his eyes following every movement as if it were happening in slow motion.
Or when she’d look back at him over her shoulder, blue eyes twinkling like the sunlight reflecting off the water’s surface, her lips moving but the sound delayed — calling for him to hurry up, and he’d startle — notice that he’d been standing still as if someone cast Stopga on his legs.
When he joined with Sora once more, he wondered if he only thought she was beautiful because she resembled Kairi and Sora’s feelings for her were so strong that it affected Roxas’s own. Gaining his own heart, meeting Kairi for the first time in person, he didn’t feel that vague flutter in his chest or the need to commit every smile and glance to memory. No twisting in his stomach beyond the irritation he felt when someone was badgering her — nothing that was like what he felt for Xion.
Her smile, he sorely missed it in the few fleeting seconds he could recall her name. And when those memories came flooding back, he felt such relief that he could almost cry.
Another clash of their Keyblades and he blocked reflexively, his knee buckling as she pressed closer, the sparks flying nearly blinding him but between the cross their keyblades made — her eyes filled his entire world.
Maybe that’s what made him do it.
Pressing forward, his hand curving up in an arc to knock her keyblade away before he darted forward to press a kiss to her cheek. Everything that followed was slow in his eyes. Her own widening, not quite registering what happened, her key blade falling from hand and caught in his own as he pulled back. Warmth lingering on his lips as her own parted, first in a gasp and then a shout.
“Roxas!”
He grinned lazily, turning her key blade around while his own dematerialized, shoulders hiking in a half-hearted shrug. “What?”
It was hard to feel like he was in trouble with the way she looked. Mesmerized ocean blue eyes darkened, nose scrunched, brows furrowed, and cheeks a few shades too pink for embarrassment. She was too cute but he doubted that she would let him get close enough to hug her. With her arms folded across her chest, she glared at him and he knew he was in some form of trouble.
“That’s cheating and you know it!”
“I thought we agreed that we can kiss whenever,” he rubbed his fingers along his chin, feigning curiosity as he rolled his eyes to the sky. After a second passed, he looked at her and shrugged. “Won’t apologize for thinking about kissing you when we’re training.”
Her blush worsened and she almost seemed close to fuming. “That’s not the point!” She snapped, her keyblade disappearing from his hand and appearing in her own with a sheen of light. She pointed it at him, her lower lip poking just a bit in a pout. “How am I supposed to concentrate when you do that?”
Roxas hummed thoughtfully, strolling toward her leisurely till the flat of her key blade’s tip pressed against his chest. “When I do what exactly?”
What he wanted to hear was her argue back at him. Perhaps throw a quip or two. But she didn’t. Her eyes widened and her breath caught. A startled look as her key blade vanished in a sheen of light and she drew her hand away as if burned. He realized his mistake a second late. Right. His hand pressed to his chest and he frowned.
Despite putting down his coat and wearing street clothes more often, he could still remember it. The way her Keyblade pressed against his chest, her face hidden beneath her hood, the tears.
Even if they had grown from those days and were getting better with each passing second, those memories would always hold pain and regret.
“Xion —“
“Kiss me,” she mumbled. His eyes going wide and he tipped his head to one side, knowing that his face was reddening. But she wasn’t looking at him. Staring down at her feet with her hands at her side. “… It’s hard to focus.”
Oh.
“Well…”
How was he going to explain that to her? It was the same for him, really. When she was around, it was hard for him to focus. But when they were fighting together, he felt stronger.
“That’s because… you care about me.”
Something in his chest shuddered. A warm pulse startling him as he took a hesitant step forward, the grass shifting beneath his sneakers with every step he took to close the distance between them.
“And… you wouldn’t do anything to hurt me,” he assured, the warmth doused with cold dread as she lifted her head, meeting his eyes with a sorrowful expression. “… Not if you can help it.”
Xion’s eyes shimmered, glazed over with something, and he felt his heart ache. Opening his mouth to apologize, a tight embrace knocked the breath out of him. He wasn’t used to being hugged. Not now even. His hands hovering in the air before finding their place at her back, his arms winding around her as he held her tightly.
“I didn’t think you’d be this distracting,” Xion muttered, her words muffled against Roxas’s shoulder.
He chuckled, squeezing lightly. “Well, now you know how I felt whenever we were paired on missions..”
“You… felt like this then?”
It was a little embarrassing to admit but if she was going to be honest with him, then honesty is the least Roxas could give her in return. “All the time,” he admitted. “Wanting to impress you or get your attention. I mean, I wanted to be friends but… I just wanted you to notice me.”
For so many days, he’d been the Keyblade Wielder. The one who would complete Kingdom Hearts. And it wasn’t so much as everyone noticing him but what weapon he held in his hand. And the person that he was connected to. All the things that made up his identity were just belongings of someone else. Hand-me-downs. Nothing that he owned.
But Xion looked at him as if he were someone new.
So did Axel.
They were his first real friends.
And to feel this way about her. Xion was his first real love.
“You were one of the few people that I noticed…” Xion’s voice came through clearer as she laughed, her cheek resting against his shoulder, dark hair filling his vision when he looked down at her. “I just wanted you to like me.”
Liking her was a bit of an understatement.
“Alright… how about a promise? I won’t kiss you when we’re training until we’re done.”
Slowly, she pulled away from him and his breath caught as she stared up at him with a dazzling smile.
“Deal.”
It felt like someone casted Thundaga on him. Electricity running up and down his spine, his heart fluttering and everything just felt charged. He knew he was staring but she didn’t say anything, just rubbed his back and smiled up at him as if he were the only person in all the worlds.
Her smile really shouldn’t have been able to do that to him.

Pokemon SwSh Thoughts - Post Game
So I’ve finished Pokemon Sword’s primary content.  All that’s left is to finish up the PokeDex and drive myself insane trying to whip up all the variations of Alcremie.  That, and delaying buying an online subscription for as long as possible before I bother with trading to get the other game’s exclusives.  Here’s some thoughts on the game after the fact:
Pokemon SwSh really needed to come out in late 2020, period.  I’ve enjoyed the game so far, but I’ve played it for about a week without putting in too much time/effort grinding and I’ve already done pretty much everything there is to do.  I had my Starter leveled up to 100 before I even left the Wild Area for the very first time.  The pacing and content depth of this game are pretty much non-existent, whereas the majority of the effort has clearly been put toward refining the competitive combat development.  That’s great for those players who really like the battle system, but not so much for those of us who like story and broader gameplay elements.
Pro - Streamlined Gameplay One thing I’ve wanted in Pokemon for ages has been the ability to skip tutorials.  I understand the necessity of having them, as every game that comes out is going to be some player’s first and their presence is for that player.  But at least having the option to skip them for us old hats would be nice.  SwSh does that!  I was delighted to discover that the game allows you to bypass tutorials with a simple yes/no prompt when a new element is introduced.  How to catch Pokemon, type match-ups, how to heal at Pokemon Centers, and so forth - all the stuff previous games led us through by the nose has been made optional this time around.
I’ve seen some people saying that this game holds the player’s hand too much as it leads us from one gameplay element to the next and doesn’t let us progress at our own leisure.  To some degree this is true, but it’s far less egregious than in previous games, such as SuMo.  There’s yet to be a good balance between giving the player free reign and giving them enough guidance to ensure we never feel lost, but this has been an inoffensive example as far as I’m concerned.  The game does end up feeling rather railroaded, but I don’t necessarily consider that a fault of hand-holding. I’ll get to this matter later on.
Pro - The Style Galar is a very pretty region and the game makes good use of the Switch’s higher capacity to produce excellent backdrops for the player to explore.  Many of the Pokemon have charming animations (Falinks is my favorite on this respect).  The towns are all really well-designed in terms of visuals, especially compared to the bare-bones looks of older generations.  I feel like there could have been more, but what we got is still great.
Pro - Implications in Lore Those of you who know me know how much I love lore and world building.  Pokemon, as a franchise, is ripe with opportunity to examine its lore to the most tiny and obscure detail, so any new addition to the franchise is welcome on that front.  Galar has some pretty fascinating nuggets to contribute.
I love that the League in Galar, as well as competitive Pokemon Training in general, is treated like a career sport.  In specific, I love that this view and practice is exclusive to Galar - I wouldn’t like it at all if the entire franchise shifted to this angle, but it works great for a one-off region.  I like that Kabu specifically relocated himself from Hoenn to join the sports league as it doesn’t exist in his home region.  The Champion being a sort of major celebrity/superhero, the way Gym Leaders can recruit proteges or even inheritors of their rank from among contenders, the sort of clique all the Gym Leaders have with one another - it’s a really neat dynamic.  I also like the notion that actually completing the Gym Challenge isn’t something common and most Trainers who try rarely make it even halfway through.  That’s an interesting contrast to other regions where collecting Gym Badges seems almost as a given and the League itself is considered the real challenge, or where the whole endeavor is designed to be finished as a matter of course, like in Alola.
There’s also some really neat additions to the overall lore brought in from the Pokemon Masters mobile game.  While its place in canon is questionable, it does specifically mention Galar in a few places.  The idea that Pokemon who do not appear in the current Dex are banned from Galar by customs (perhaps identified as potentially dangerous/invasive species) is an interesting one.  So is the claim that Iris - the Champion of Unova in BW2 - is a cousin of Leon and Hop.  I love it when there are connections amid titles like that as it really helps build a more unified setting.
-Edit-: Darn, apparently those screenshots were fakes.  Strike that positive from the list, I suppose.
Mixed Pro/Con - The Availability of Pokemon and the Wild Area I’m not talking about Dexit - I have my own thoughts on that explained elsewhere and frankly don’t think it’s going to end up as bad as everyone is fretting over in the long run.  No, in this particular case I’m focused on the availability of Pokemon that are in the game itself.
To put it simply... it’s too easy.  I know that filling out the PokeDex isn’t supposed to be a huge challenge, but I’ve gotten the majority of it done - evolved forms, item-reliant forms, gender/size/color variations included - with pretty much no effort whatsoever.  I like the idea of the Wild Area in principle but what it ends up being in practice is lacking.  It’s too easy to just hoover up Pokemon at a breakneck pace, which leads to other zones and the Wild Area itself becoming pretty much immediately obsolete.  I have no need to return to them once I’ve gotten everything I need and there’s not enough general content to urge me to visit again.
The Wild Area itself is a big open sandbox that you can roam around in, which is nice compared to more linear zones in past games.  Galar has its railroad routes, but they’re brief (aside from the obligatory overlong water route, which even then is still quite a lot smaller than other regions’ have been).  However, it’s just that - a big open sandbox.  You can wander through it very easily and even traipse into the “high level” zones without fear because you can see all the Pokemon coming and give them a wide berth to avoid them.  There aren’t any obstacles or challenges within the Wild Area itself, and the game makes it supremely easy to find Pokemon even under specific weather/time conditions, which I feel is a missed opportunity.  I would have rather the Wild Area been MUCH bigger and more involved, full of places to explore and puzzles to solve.  Similarly, I would rather that Pokemon were more difficult to come by as well - that a greater deal of effort would have been put toward tracking and discovering certain harder-to-find Pokemon, with more in-game detective work to find your prize.
Mixed Pro/Con - The Characters The ensemble cast of new Gym Leaders are great - I enjoy the majority of them and frankly want more interactions, more encounters, just more in general.  That’s sort of the problem though - I want more.  The game itself criminally under-utilizes these characters, especially compared to how much more involved and explored Gym Leaders have been in recent games.  There is precious little content using the Gym Leaders here in Galar as it stands and I constantly found myself wanting them to hang out longer and have the chance to learn more about them.  Their League Cards are a neat little addition full of interesting tidbits about their histories, natures, and relationships with each other, but I would MUCH rather have gotten to see all that play out in the game itself rather than read it as a flavor blurb.
On the con side of this, however, is the fact that all of the characters are extremely one-dimensional.  We’ve been seeing a steady increase in the depth and development of supporting characters in the games since BW onward, with SuMo arguably having the most to date.  The overall characterization in SwSh is incredibly lacking by comparison as we don’t get nearly enough time to be with the cast, nor is the cast given the chance to present more than one note per.  Nobody has any sort of emotional growth or development.  The closest thing to a character arc in the game is Hop’s acceptance of the idea that he’s not going to be the Champion, but it doesn’t have anywhere near as much punch as it could and is over in the blink of an eye compared to how he spends THE ENTIRE GAME repeating the same “I’m gonna be the Champion/Hokage/Pirate King!” spiel every time he’s on screen.
Con - Dynamaxing and Max Raid Battles I’m not really on board with the whole “Mega-Evolution is best! No more gimmicks!” train because that’s just silly to me.  Every game has its gimmick and the way Pokemon gradually picks up tricks and traits from its past versions to consolidate into newer titles is one of its strengths.  That said, Dynamaxing is worthless and a pointless addition to the game, both in presentation and practice.
The visual of a Pokemon going kaiju is a neat concept and one I was initially intrigued by, but in practice it falls flat because it’s as thin as cardboard.  It’s just Mega-Evolution and Z-Moves smooshed together with an additional 3 round time limit tacked on.  All it functionally does is buff your Pokemon’s HP pool and add additional weather/status effects to certain attacks, but in some cases the Dynamax versions of attacks are actually weaker/less useful than their base form.  In Gym Battles all the way through the final League fight with Leon, I didn’t bother with Dynamaxing because my Pokemon were strong enough to not need it.  I could one-shot Dynamaxed Pokemon with ease using a non-Dynamaxed Pokemon and that really shows a flaw in the design if ever there was one.  Dynamaxing doesn’t add or improve anything vital to gameplay - it’s just fluff.
Max Raid Battles as found in the Wild Area are even worse.  For those of you who don’t know, these are instanced battles against a Dynamaxed/Gigantamaxed wild Pokemon where you team up with three other players/NPCs.  If you win, you get a bunch of useful items and have the chance to catch the wild Pokemon as well, which is the only way you can get certain Gigantamax-capable Pokemon reliably.
The issue with these Max Raid Battles is that they’re an absolute slog.  In the early stages of the game they’re all super easy to the point that I could solo them and thus gathered mountains of EXP-boosting candies, which let me overlevel my Pokemon beyond reason.  Since the whole “your Pokemon is too high level and won’t listen to you” thing apparently doesn’t apply to Starters and special Event Pokemon, I was able to max-level and run rampant across all opposition with my Starter and my special “thanks for buying early” Meowth.  HOWEVER.  The difficulty scale of the Max Raid Battles increases with your game progress, so by the time I finished the game and went back into the Wild Area, the Max Raid Battles’ difficulty had ramped up.  That’s an okay compromise on its face, but the manner in which the difficulty has increased is poor game design.  The battles aren’t any harder, they just take longer - the wild Pokemon has more HP,  tosses up a few rounds of shields to soak damage at the start and again halfway through the fight, and purges stat boosts from the player and party throughout the battle.  It just makes the fights a pain in the ass to get through rather than making them more challenging or fun, and it’s gotten to the point that I don’t even bother with them anymore.  They’re just not worth the trouble, not even for the sake of trying to farm EXP candies because, at this point in the game, all Pokemon in the Wild Area scale up to level 60+ and thus are perfectly serviceable as EXP farming fodder themselves.
On a lore side of things, Dynamaxing is really confusing.  There’s the whole visual aspect of the Pokemon growing to giant sizes and sometimes changing their appearances, and there’s these massive arenas built to facilitate the whole thing.  But the game itself goes out of its way to impress the fact that the Pokemon aren’t actually getting bigger.  They just appear to grow in size and haven’t actually physically changed themselves so Dynamaxing is more like a giant hard light holographic projection than anything else?  It’s just a really weird design choice to have made and I don’t understand why it was included.
Con - The Writing So, writing is very important to me.  It’s literally been my job for the past decade with various game studios.  I don’t consider myself any sort of literary snob as I feel there’s a place for schlock right alongside masterpieces - they all serve a specific purpose and fulfill a particular hunger the reader would like satisfied.
That said, SwSh’s writing is abysmal.
Right on the face, there’s not enough of it.  The game is criminally short and light on content, which directly impacts its pacing.  Remember earlier when I mentioned that things felt railroaded?  That’s because there’s not enough story to rest on - it all flies by as fast as can be, forcing the player along a very narrow and brief chain of events that don’t feel consequential at all.  Further, the player has no agency in events whatsoever.  It’s not the player’s story - it’s Hop’s story.  We’re the supporting role to his journey, shallow as that arc may be.  Hop is the one who initiates the events of the game without our input as a character and then we spend the entire game following him around, or being pushed into the next event by other characters who are facilitating Hop.  At no point is the player ever given the chance to express their own characterization, motivation, or even opinions.  Nearly every two-choice dialogue option that appears boils down to “Yes” or “Slightly More/Less Enthusiastic Yes”, which is a huge downgrade from the genuine negative responses and NPC reactions that were present in SuMo.
In terms of overall plot, SwSh has pretty much the same level of depth and complexity as the original Red/Blue titles, and that is as scathing a criticism in this modern age as I can possibly imagine.  The whole story is “run in a circle, collect badges, fight vaguely present villainous threat, fight league.”  We are actively forced from one gym fight to the next with no time to breathe, no story-focused events in between, and not even any chance to appreciate the gym, its leader, or even the towns they take place in.  It’s one and done - once you’ve got the badge there’s no reason to hang around and the story shuffles us along quickly as can be.  I mean that literally in some cases - there are hints of a greater plot at hand with Sonia investigating the history of Galar’s legends and the potential machinations of mega-corporate mogul Chairman Rose.  But each time those are broached in game play, the game pushes the player off-screen and says “Well, that’s not something you need to worry about.  Go get another badge!”  I mean, LITERALLY!  There’s a point where The Plot begins to kick in where Pokemon begin to spontaneously Dynamax and cause havoc, which is the narrative queue for the player to become involved and for the story to reveal a new facet.  But when that happens, Leon LITERALLY says “leave this to the adults, you just focus on your Gym Challenge” and runs off-screen to handle it himself.  It would be a good narrative subversion if it led up to things eventually getting out of hand and the player getting roped into things, or the player having the ability to defy such warnings and interject themselves into danger.  But that doesn’t happen - the game just forces us to focus on the Gym Challenge alone and keeps all the actual plot of the game off-screen away from us.  This is very poor narrative design and game design alike, and it all comes to nothing because we’re forced to clean up everything in the end anyway by battling the villain and legendaries as per usual.
Though I should also point out that there’s no villain in this game.
But what about Team Yell and Chairman Rose, I hear you ask?  They’re not villains, both literally and figuratively respectively.  Team Yell never really does anything other than act as brief gate locking elements throughout the game until you finish the Gym you’re at, then they bounce off to the next part of the route they’re set to block.  They don’t do anything bad and, as it’s later revealed, they’re actually just a bunch of Spikemuth Gym staffers who are posing as hooligans to support Marnie.  They’re literally not villains and, once you beat the Spikemuth Gym, they actually become supporting characters who cheer for the player character and help out against the actual supposed villain of the game.
The actual “villain” of the game is Chairman Rose and his assistant Oleana.  However, they’re only villains because the script says they are.  They don’t actually do anything bad throughout the entire game nor is there any indication that they have some sort of grand master plan.  The most we get is some unusual happenings like small quakes and explosions in the distance, but the game never allows us any chance to investigate - we’re just shoved off toward the next Gym each time.  So when Chairman Rose is finally revealed to be the Big Bad, it comes completely out of left field and seems to happen for no reason whatsoever.  Further, IT IS FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.  Chairman Rose’s plan and goal is never explained in depth - all we get is the vague indication that he believes that Galar isn’t sustainable and there will be an inevitable energy crisis in about 1,000 years, and somehow his EVIL SCHEME will fix it.  But, like, even Leon flat-out says “I understand your concern but you’re being hasty, this doesn’t need to be rushed, chill out for five seconds and let’s figure this out reasonably”.  Instead Rose interrupts the Champion match and announces his EVIL SCHEME on global broadcast for literally no good reason.  There was no dire immediacy that required him to do it right then and there, or in that manner, but the plot needed to move us along so that’s how it goes.
It really doesn’t help that, prior to all this, there’s absolutely no indication at all that Rose nor Oleana are bad guys.  They’re just business folk who appear to have nothing but good intentions and support for Leon, with the other adults of the cast all happily trusting them.  There is nothing to make them seem suspicious in practice and they offer no reason to doubt them at all, so them suddenly being the bad guys is just confusing.  Further, how the player is first introduced to the concept of them being antagonists is easily the most ridiculous logic jump and overreaction I’ve seen since the old Adam West Batman television show.  So get this: after a battle, Leon says he’ll meet Player and Hop for dinner to celebrate.  Player and Hop wait for Leon, but he never shows up.  Another NPC explains that Leon was called in for a last-minute meeting by Chairman Rose (who is his boss and has made such requests of Leon’s time throughout the game, as I feel is important to point out) and apologizes for having to miss the dinner plans.  Simple enough sort of situation, right?  The sort of thing that any reasonable person would shrug and say “Well, that sucks but okay, let’s go eat on our own then” to, right?  So what happens here instead?
The Player, Hop, Marnie, and her Gym Leader brother GATHER A SMALL MOB AND STORM CHAIRMAN ROSE’S BUSINESS HQ, FIGHTING THEIR WAY THROUGH SECURITY.
I mean, escalation much?  We all have smartphones - just send Leon a text, for goodness’ sake.  I’m playing through these events constantly going “why the hell are we doing this and why is everyone acting like it’s some sort of dire emergency?”.  And do you know what happens when we finally kick down the doors to Chairman Rose’s office?  We find Chairman Rose and Leon quietly having a peaceful chat, after which Leon apologizes for having to cancel the dinner plans and we all walk out together like nothing happened.  It was just this huge, needless overreaction that has no consequence and that neither Rose nor Leon even bat an eye at.  We, as the players, learn absolutely nothing of importance and are back on the Gym Challenge immediately with no functional changes to the narrative.
Like... what was the point of that?!  How was that the best option to try and put Chairman Rose and his underlings into the role of antagonists for us to oppose?
So what is Chairman Rose’s EVIL SCHEME anyway?  Basically he wants to provide Galar with renewable clean energy which... uh... is bad?  Somehow?  Apparently he plans to use a Legendary Pokemon called Eternatus - apparently the source of Dynamaxing - which is literally never mentioned at any point in the game except precisely when it’s time to fight/capture it, nor does fighting/capturing it have any impact on the story or setting.  You would think that the player being in control of a massive Eldritch horror that has UNLIMITED POWER at its disposal would be something of a sticking point somewhere in the story, but no.  Eternatus and Rose’s plan are never mentioned until precisely the time you need to deal with them, and once that’s done they’re both never mentioned again.  Done and done all in one.  No gradual seeding of information, no hints and clues throughout the game, no development of lore - just wham, bam, thank you ma’am and off we go.
Y’know, call me silly but in a game that has undertones referencing climate change, extinction of animal species, and criticisms against capitalism run amok, is it really a good idea to depict the guy advocating for clean energy to be bad?  That feels like a missed mark to me.
The post-game plot, should one bother to call it that, is just inane.  It basically boils down to a pair of one-shot baddies who show up and say “Ha ha! We’re rich and that means we’re better than everyone! Watch as we cause trouble for vague reasons, get hoist by our own petard, and then fuck off forever! Byeeeee~!”  The post-game is completely pointless and doesn’t add anything of value at all.  Which, again, compare to older games like ORAS’ post-game expansion content and it’s nothing but a damn shame.
SwSh’s writing is shallow and limited at best, with one-dimensional characters, no genuine conflict or resolution, terrible pacing, and repetitive elements that boomerang around over and over and over again to the point of annoyance.  Compared to what we’ve seen Pokemon achieve in earlier titles like BW, ORAS, and SuMo, it makes it all the more obvious that SwSh was not given ANYWHERE near the time and love it needed in development and is a massive downgrade in that respect.
Con - Lots of Style, No Substance To wrap all this up - I enjoyed playing SwSh as much as I did any other early Pokemon game.  I think that, as a first installment on a new system, it’s fine.  That’s all - it’s just fine.  It’s serviceable as a means of establishing the franchise onto the Switch and completing its move off purely-mobile mediums like the Gameboy and 3DS.  It’s pretty to look at and has a superficial level of engagement, but its prettiness and level of content very quickly reveal themselves to be only skin deep.  Once you get past the initial gloss there’s really nothing to this game compared to the content, involvement, and writing quality displayed in past titles on lesser-powered systems.  The towns are all pretty but there’s nothing to do in any of them aside from a Gym battle - there’s no additional fun to be had in each location, making them little more than set pieces.  The characters have initial appeal and potential for more, but the game never explores them at all.  There’s room for a bigger narrative and interesting story with the elements presented, but no opportunity to actually see them fleshed out.  The Wild Area seems big and involved at first, but as soon as you’ve gone around its loop once or twice you suddenly realize how small and compartmentalized it really is, and it lacks any reason to revisit in the end game.  The major game play function - Dynamaxing/Gigantamaxing - is little more than a novelty that is basically irrelevant to gameplay itself and, in an absolutely baffling decision by the folk behind the official competitive scene, is actually somehow banned from being used in competitions?  Like, not even “we’ve disabled the Dynamax button in online” but rather “if the competitive Pokemon you’ve spent so much time perfectly constructing has a Gigantamax form, it will not even be allowed access at all, so you better have an identical non-Gigantamax version on hand if you want to play”.  So, what exactly is the point of even having Gigantamax Pokemon then?
Everything about SwSh seems half-baked.  The ideas are there but they aren’t finished.  It should have been given much more development time and, having been in the position of the creative/dev team under demands from the shareholders, I completely sympathize with Game Freak’s devs in all this.  SwSh is ultimately a weak product but one with a lot of good ideas that weren’t given the chance to really shine.  As such, I’ve got rather high hopes for the next installment to improve on the unfortunately thin foundation SwSh has set.  Game Freak’s team has given us some amazing Pokemon games in the past and, assuming they’re given sufficient time and resources to make a title to their satisfaction, I have every confidence they’ll do so again.

Psycho Analysis: Thanos
Tumblr media
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
The Infinity Saga was all building up to one thing, hinted at in The Avengers: Thanos. For years fans watched and waited, waiting for the inevitable payoff. But time went on, and Thanos did so little, and the fans got impatient and frustrated. This guy, he was being built up as the ultimate threat in the MCU, and he can’t even get off his ass and do more than cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy? Fans were obviously a bit nervous going into Infinity War, and it’s hard to blame them all things considered; Thanos had done a grand total of nothing across the entire past three phases, he had none of the Infinity Stones, and he sure hadn’t fulfilled his promise to do it himself he made in the stinger of Age of Ultron. What good could this guy possibly be?
Oh boy, you have no idea how good.
Thanos made his grand entrance as a major character by killing Loki and beating the crap out of the Hulk, and then spent the entirety of Infinity War showing us all that maybe it’s better he was dragging his feet for so long, because everyone would have been long dead if he didn’t. What’s more intriguing is how Thanos was such a well-developed and complex villain; perhaps they were just waiting for the right moment, the perfect time when creative freedom and good villain writing could come together to deliver the Thanos that the audience and MCU deserved.
Actor: Josh Brolin, a man you may know from The Goonies or as Deadpool’s best buddy Cable, portrays Thanos, and… honestly? I think this is the first performance I’ve seen in a superhero film in a long time that I genuinely think deserved an Oscar. Brolin just commands the screen and your attention with his voice, and he really sells that the big purple MoCap creation onscreen is a real, physical guy.
Motivation/Goals: Thanos has a very simple motivation: he wishes to wipe out half of all life in the universe, to make things perfectly balanced. It’s a relatively simple evil plan, but one that is grand in scale, as well as one Thanos does not himself see as evil; rather, he sees it as an act of supreme mercy, saving the universe from itself and restoring a level of order to the chaos that is life. It really cements him as a well-intentioned extremist anti-villain: the plan is, from a certain point of view, noble, it has somewhat good intentions behind it…. But at the same time it is flawed, insane, disturbing, and will do far more harm than good in the long run.
Thankfully, the movies don’t pretend that Thanos’ plan is a good, brilliant thing, and instead use his wholeheartyed belief that it is the right thing to do, that this is his burden to carry, to highlight what a broken, depressing man Thanos truly is. So bitter by his failure to save his people, his desire to vndicate his failure in his own eyes drives him to do the nost unthinkable act of genocide in a desperate attempt to prove he was right to a race that is otherwise long dead. It’s tragic, it’s insane, and it’s just a great motivation.
I think it’s worth addressing the two biggest groups of critics of the MCU’s version of Thanos: Those who think his goal is stupid, and those who are mad that he is not more in line with his comic book counterpart. The first group is arguably the more annoying one, because they seem to be unaware of what exactly entails an anti-villain, or even a villain in general. The thing with a villain is that, no matter how cool or sympathetic or interesting they are, you are not supposed to agree with them. You are not supposed to think a villain’s plan is good or intelligent, you are not supposed to say “gee they have a point here,” you are supposed to enjoy them for what they are but you’re not supposed to be on their side. That aside, the fact hs plan is crazy and stupid is arguably the point; he is a man stricken by grief he has internalized for so long he is incapable of seeing the horrendous flaws in his plans. He is the MAD Titan after all. In all honesty, his complete and utter inability to see the faults in his plan only makes him all the more tragic.
The other group… well, to put it nicely, I really don’t feel like the comic version of Thanos’ motivations would translate well to film. To put it more bluntly, I kind of find comic Thanos to have an insanely stupid motivation. He wants to kill half of all life so he can impress a girl (that girl being Death). And people call MCU Thanos’ motivation stupid? In the comics he’s basically just a superpowered dudebro who kills everyone because he gets friendzoned. He’s basically a galactic version of a school shooter, and it’s fine if you think that’s cool, but I frankly find that something that can only work in the very specific circumstances comics can provide, and even then I think there are more intriguing villains with the same motivations… like, you know, Darkseid, the villain comic Thanos rips off.
I will concede the latter at least have more of a leg to stand on, because having a preference in how a character is portrayed is a lot different than not understanding what good writing for a villain is, but lucky for them, the filmmakers decided to have their cake and eat it too and give us a Thanos in Endgame lacking the character development and complexity displayed by Infinity War Thanos, a Thanos so utterly furious that the Avengers are close to thwarting his plan that he childishly lashes out, blames the universe for not appreciating all he did, and deciding he was just going to restart the universe from the ground up in his own image, perfectly balanced. It is kind of nice to see a Thanos a bt more in line with the genocidal tyrant of the comics, but while this one has the more accurate motivation, he does end up coming dangerously close to generic doomsday villain territory.
Personality: The interesting thing with Thanos is how there are technically two of them: the Infinity War Thanos, and the Endgame Thanos who comes from an alternate timeline. Despite the two Thanos having the same basic goal, it is their personalities that truly differ.
Infinity War Thanos is a deep, rich, and complex character. He does so much that you don’t really see supervillains do: he cries, he feels shock, he displays a range of emotions that is frankly unprecedented in a supervillain. The Russos weren’t kidding when they said Thanos was the protagonist of Infinity War more than anything; he has an arc and gets more development than any single hero in the film does. There are so many great moments to point to – his adopting of Gamora in flashback, his backstory he gives to Strange, and of course crying after sacrificing Gamora – that showcase an amazing level of depth, but there are just as many moments that showcase that even despite that he is an insane, ruthless villain who is deluded into thinking his insane plan is what’s right. He is perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Endgame Thanos is un fortunately due to his nature a little more flat as a character, and for the most part runs on the goodwill that his future self built up. As mentioned previously, he comes dangerously close to being a generic doomsday villain, but thankfully Josh Brolin manages to make him entertaining in his own right. I think one of the best moments is when he’s watching his future self’s death, and he clearly thinks the “I am inevitable” line is the coolest thing he has ever heard. Even if Endgame Thanos comes off as a bit less impressive as a character, he’s still a pretty good character. And when it comes time to throw down, this Thanos is infinitely more impressive, and there is his aforementioned petty reasoning to reset the universe.
Final Fate: Infinity War Thanos actually manages to make it out of his movie alive, sitting down and watching the sunrise on a “grateful” universe. At the start of Endgame, karma catches up with him, but shockingly, he died believing he won. They never undo the damage while this Thanos is still alive. He goes to his grave believing he has balanced the universe, and there is nothing the Avengers can do to fix it. For five years this holds true. Thanos won.
Endgame Thanos has a much more satisfying fate. After Tony makes the ultimate sacrifice and snaps his fingers, Thanos’ entire army suffers the fate he wanted to give half the universe. In a dark mirror of the final scene of Infinity War, Thanos sits down and bows his head in complete silence as he waits for the inevitable, his entire army crumbling to dust around him. If anything truly makes this Thanos as impressive as the one from the last film, it’s the death; there’s no screaming, no bitter last words, no cliché one-liners about how unfair it is… just silent, crushed defeat and acceptance.
Best Scene: The Infinity War Thanos has so many scenes that could be contenders, from fooling the Guardians on Knowhere, to killing Vision, to his battle on Titan… there’s just so much to pick from. But I think the scene where he sacrifices Gamora really encapsulates everything great about his character, the tragedy, the monstrosity, the fact he is so insane that he really believes what he’s doing is out of love. In that moment he truly is the most tragic, horrifying villain ever to grace the screen.
Endgame Thanos has a bit less interesting going on, but I think I would be remiss to not mention the incredible scene where, during the battle, he spins his blades like those of a helicopter. Yes, you read that right: they referenced Thanoscopter.
Best Quote: Infinity War Thanos is a veritable fountain of quotes. Every other word out of his mouth has become a meme. But frankly, for the sheer horror this line filled me when first viewng, I think I might just have to go with his immortal reply to Thor’s wounding him:
“You should have gone for the head.” *SNAP*
Endgame Thanos of course continues his predecessor’s memetic legacy, with tons of great, quotable lines, especially in his numerous evil speeches to the Avengers near the end of the film. The best might just be this quote, when Thanos decides to shed any veneer of being well-intentioned and dives headfirst into extremism:
"In all my years of conquest, violence, slaughter, it was never personal. But I'll tell you now, what I'm about to do to your stubborn, annoying little planet... I'm gonna enjoy it. Very, very much."
Final Thoughts & Score: Thanos is truly impressive. Somehow, some way, this character was able to exceed years of buildup and expectations despite having so little presence beforehand there were fears that he was going to be the biggest letdown in the MCU. They took one of the cheesiest comic book characters, a ripoff of DC’s greatest villain with a boner for the physical embodiment of the concept of death, polished hi, gave him depth and emotion, and unleashed him onto the world. And what’s more, they gave him focus, they give him tons of quotes, they gave him so many great scenes… they really went above and beyond to make sure no one was let down by the portrayal of Thanos. Hell, even if you didn’t like him as much in Infinity War, they go out of their way to please the other side and show how stupid his plan was in Endgame. We end up getting the best of both worlds with Thanos.
Still, they’re basically two entirely different takes on the same character, and so I’m rating them accordingly. Infinity War’s take on Thanos is easily a 10/10. He’s the MCU’s best, most complex, most well-rounded villain, a truly brilliant culmination of excellent writing and fantastic acting. Josh Brolin brings Thanos to life and injects him with so much personality that it’s really hard to even come close to him in terms of quality; I think the only villains who are really on his level are Ego, Mysterio, and Killmonger. If I do have any gripes with this Thanos, it’s that his fighting style leans far too heavily on the Gauntlet in this film, and he unfortunately ditches his awesome armor right at the start. Those are nitpicks, though; this Thanos is amazing otherwise.
Endgame Thanos, while certainly more imposing and giving a very awesome final battle, kind of loses something considering this is not the Thanos we know and love (to hate), technically speaking; this is an alternate universe Thanos from earlier in the timeline, and even though we know what he’s like, he still comes off as bit underdeveloped. Still, he has enough quotable lines and cool moments that I feel confident in giving him an 8/10. I feel like I can’t rate him any higher because, again, he’s really walking that thin line between a good villain and a generic doomsday villain. At the same time, I can’t rate him any lower, because after all… they referenced Thanoscopter.
Thanos has really set the bar high for future MCU villains, but not only that, he has set the bar high for when the DCEU finally brings in Darkseid. How ironic that the character made to rip him off has now overshadowed him in cinema, and will be the biggest obstacle Darkseid must overcome to be taken seriously as a good character. Of course, DC can win this battle easily by shelving Darkseid for now and just making Mr. Mind the ultimate big bad for the time being; evil space caterpillars that speak with a little radio are always going to be the best villain in any argument.
As for the MCU itself, it should be in safe hands for now. Thanos really showed how polished and complex a villain can be made, and despite tripping up with the mediocre villains in the Phase One holdover Captain Marvel, the MCU was able to deliver a fantastic villain in Far From Home wirth Mysterio, who is easily one of the must fun and entertaining villains in the franchise. I think the MCU going forward has to just be careful not to try and overextend themselves to “top” Thanos, and for the most part it looks like they aren’t trying to do that, with Zemo and Mandarin being the biggest bad guys explicitly confirmed so far. Unless Doctor Doom or Dracula decides to pop in, I think they’re going to be sticking to working on and making entertaining more low-key villains, and frankly I think that’s smart; villains like Thanos need to be used sparingly.
Whatever the future holds for superhero movies, Thanos leaves behind quite a legacy, acting as the perfect capstone to the first decade of major superhero cinema. And what a capstone he is.

02 Always Take the Nickel Tour
Ao3 link
07/01/13 Monday
Morning dawned with a pleasant chill. Between Stan, Soos and Ford, they got the old station wagon - a sky-blue Ford Fairlane - rolled away from the house and tucked in at a shallow angle next to the Stanleymobile. The S still leaned forlornly against the dented siding. They’d get it hauled up and nailed back into place later.
Stan swept the road-trip debris off the front passenger seat and cracked the glove compartment. He set aside the age-yellowed manual and the service records, most of them crisp and fragile on ancient transfer paper, one new, extensive and computer-printed.
He then flipped through everything else, scanning with an expert eye for items of interest.
Brand new insurance card in the name of Clara Jane Merrick. A small collection of much older insurance cards in the name of Charles and Caroline Merrick. Vintage pressure gauge, matte black LED flashlight, heavy-framed designer sunglasses, can of pepper spray.
Photograph in a gold-stamped cardboard frame. Stan fished that one out, curious. The photo stock was the old-school linen textured stuff. Three blondes of varying shades grinned back at him, lined up like nesting dolls by age – forties, twenties, preteen – with matching sunhats and huge smiles. The smallest and darkest-haired was instantly recognizable as Clary. She was maybe twelve years old here, a beaky girl still growing into the aquiline nose neither of the others shared. He flexed the frame in one hand, squinting in to read the penned inscription on the photo's back - Carrie, Charlie, Clary.
Stan filed that away for later reference, returned the less-relevant stuff to the glove compartment, then leaned way over along the bench seat to pull the hood release.
The sun had slipped past noon by the time Clary finally emerged from the house, looking far less threadbare than she had the prior night. She was crisply dressed in yesterday’s Bermuda shorts, a fresh button-down shirt and a silk scarf patterned with dragonflies - wrapped twice, snug, knotted off-center at the throat. “Good afternoon, Stan.”
“Hey, Clary. Feelin’ better?” He was elbow-deep in the car’s guts by now, a few unsalvageable bits laid out on an old towel to one side. Grease streaked his forearms. The engine was pretty nice for something near the age of his own wheels, a huge V-8 that had seen very little use. This must have spent most of its life in a garage.
Clary stepped in alongside Stan, peering despondently into the engine compartment. “Sore, but rested, at least. What’s the diagnosis?”
Stan hissed in thought. “Drive belt assembly’s shot, electricals are kind of a mess. Radiator hoses of course. Think the engine block’s okay. The body damage isn’t too bad.”
Clary ran exploring fingers along the battered chrome of the front grill, mouth set in an unhappy line. “Except for the concave hood, I suppose. What can I do to help?”
“Know anythin’ about cars?”
“Repair? Not a thing.”
“It’s gonna be a while.” Stan glanced sidelong to study her profile.
“Ford said it may take weeks.” Clary’s tone was conflicted, teeth catching lightly at her lower lip, brow furrowed.
“Ford doesn’t know what he’s talkin’ about when it comes to cars, but yeah, he’s not wrong. This thing’s old and the parts are gonna be a pain to scavenge up.” Stan straightened and toweled off his hands. “Orderin’ stuff in would take a while and I know from experience that you don’t always get the right widget through the mail. Might have a couple ideas about local sources…we’ll see. You okay?”
That air of pinched distress was tight around her eyes again. She rolled her shoulders back, looking up and out into the forest. An unhurried breeze set thousands of green-velvet branches into whispering motion. “Okay enough. It’s gorgeous here,” almost as an afterthought.
Stan flicked his gaze heavenwards for a weary moment. Yeah, she’d be staying for the duration. What the hell was it with tourists and pines? “Y’get used to it. Check out the Shack yet?”
“Not yet. I was promised an expert guide.” She stepped away, heading around the back of the wagon to unlatch and hoist down the mountain bike from its rack. A faint residue of reddish dust clung to the tire rims. “Maybe when I’m done unpacking the basics? Since I’m going to be here a few days, there are people who need to know my plans have changed.”
“Thought you were on vacation.”
“Money never sleeps, and unfortunately it’s easy to get some things done on the road.”
She trailed back and forth for a while, parking the bike and hauling a larger duffel bag into the house. Stan worked methodically through the last few items on his engine checklist and jotted down an occasional note. By the time she returned he had a more or less complete catalogue of what needed work. He lowered the badly-dented hood into place and latched it. “Fixin’ this is gonna be an adventure.”
“I was afraid you’d say that. Let me know what you need in terms of parts, I can cover whatever – “
Stan ducked his head, stifling the wide flash of his grin behind one hand. “Careful, kid, don’t leave yourself quite that wide open. This is pretty much on Ford anyway so I’ll take most of it out of his hide. C’mon.” Clary paced in his wake, looking up and out across the Shack grounds like she hadn’t bothered before – probably a fair enough assessment after yesterday’s chaos. “So car repair’s not your bag, no shock that. How about arts and crafts? Tall tales? Improv?”
“I’ve had to put on a song-and-dance routine for the IRS a few times. Does that count?”
That startled a laugh out of him. “Depends on whether you pulled it off.”
“I definitely pulled it off. At least no one’s come looking for me yet.”
“Maybe you help me help Soos around the Shack, then, put those tap-dancin’ skills to the test. A favor for a favor.”
Clary frowned at him in puzzlement. “I’m game to try. This is all a bit outside my wheelhouse.”
“Honestly, you could get stuck in way worse places than this. We’ve got tons of stuff for the discernin’ passerby. Merchandise, magic, mystery, uh, mayhem, you get the picture.”
They walked through the house and he held the showroom door open for a moment. Clary peeked through at the flock of tourists trailing after Soos like happy ducklings. “You interested in this kinda stuff?”
“Interested enough to read the bumper sticker. Not enough to actually plan you into my itinerary.”
“Damn shame, that, you’d be missin’ out on the ninth wonder of the world.” He managed to time it in sync with Soos’ patter, the rhythm of the show familiar as breathing, and got a chuckle in return. “They’ll wrap up in a few, we’ll take a quick look at the gift shop until they clear out. Then you get your Founder’s Tour.”
“That’s you, then, not Soos?”
“Got it in one. I built this place from the ground up! Sure, the house was here and the junk was here, but I’m the one who spun it into a wondrous house of mysterious junk.” His hands swept up and out in a marquee arc. Clary gave him that wry, oblique glance he was getting used to.
The gift shop was temporarily abandoned. Stan made himself comfortable leaning against the counter and watched her pace the periphery, trailing careful fingertips over the snow globes. “Take a look around! If you see an impulse buy, make it.”
“I’ll pick out a few things before I go. If I don’t have physical evidence, no one will believe that I was here.” She picked up a snow globe, flipped it over to stir the flakes into motion, then set it down with exaggerated caution and headed for the freezer.
“Just because you’re stayin’ over does not mean you get to sneak in here for an ice pop.” He watched her peer through the glass at their collection of frozen novelties. “This as far out west as you’ve gotten? I mean, we’re off the beaten path and you’re just passin’ through, right? Most folks would’ve taken the main route north of here.”
“This is my fifth state in - “ She frowned, then sighed. “Three days with the overnight, I guess. I’ve been taking it slow and sticking to the state highways, since I’m traveling solo.”
“Long way to drive alone.”
“Yes.” Clary skimmed through the T-shirt rack and plucked out a question mark to hold up against her chest. “You started this place up, then. Can I ask how long you’ve been at it? There’s some history here, I can see that much.”
“Thirty years.” Easier to say now that the long wait was over, that was for sure. He studied her thoughtfully; she was a tough read compared to the usual Gravity Falls crowd. “Can’t say that I ever thought I’d start to enjoy this line of work, originally the idea was just to get the mortgage paid, but go figure. Built a pretty nice business out of tellin’ lies – ‘scuse me, stories.”
A bare sliver of a smile curled along her lips. “You did. I can tell this is a local institution. You’re retired now?”
“More or less. My brother wanted to haul me off on an expedition. Couldn’t say no.” Stan ducked his chin, smiling to himself. “Couldn’t up an’ close the place either, so I left it all to Soos. Been nice to come back and see what he’s made of it, stick my hand in again. You can take the man out of the Mystery Shack, but you can’t take the mystery out of the man, I guess.”
Clary came to rest at the counter next to him, hands empty, he noted. “So I get a rare chance at a tour from the original Mr. Mystery.”
“What, nothin’ here inspires you to drop a wad of cash?”
“I think I’ll make my purchases after I have a functioning car.”
“Fair enough. You’re about to witness a true master in action.” The excited murmur of shopping-primed tourists was beginning to build at the interior door. “We’ve got maybe twenty minutes before the next gaggle rolls through, so you get the short form. Anythin’ specific you want to see?”
They slipped out of the shop as the current group started to trickle in, ducking into the showroom. Stan couldn’t help sweeping an arm out to indicate the entire collection. “Behold, the Mystery Shack!”
Clary appraised the exhibits with cool cynicism. “Which one of these gets the least attention? I’ve always loved the half-hidden displays best.”
She strolled at his side, hands in her pockets, lips twitching now and then as he spun familiar stories. Coaxing a laugh out of her at the right points, a smile here and there, felt like a little victory. There was a customer like this in every tour, the one who’d been dragged along by family or friends. If that one could be won over the rest of the group would be eating out of his hand.
“I have no idea what this is. Must be a Soos addition.” Stan peered at the tiny huts shingled with pine cone scales built into a series of branches suspended from one of the ceilings, glittering with well-concealed LED lights. “All right, the Village of Cannibal Pixies, to whom we’re apparently now rentin’ space in the showroom. They’re out huntin’ their fellow fairies for the rest of the day, but they’ll be back this evenin’ and no doubt throwin’ quite the party, which is just as well, because most of the other fairies ‘round these parts are about as much fun as a root canal….”
She had to bite her lip against a horrified laugh. “I thought these were all your creations?”
“Nah. You’ve gotta keep the mix fresh. Throw in somethin’ new and the tourists will flock through the doors. It’s been almost a year since I got to add a new exhibit, actually.” Stan nudged her in the side with an elbow. “And you are gonna help me put my mark on the place again. Think you’ve soaked up enough inspiration?”
“I’ve soaked up something. Inspiration for what, exactly?” Stan ushered her through another door, one tucked into the shadow of a larger display’s curtain. They wove together through a twisting hallway and he savored her blink of surprise when they emerged a few steps down the hall from the kitchen.
“We’re makin’ another attraction for the showroom.” He’d already laid out most of the basics earlier that morning, with a vague plan towards taking stock and maybe patching some bits and bobs together, but the prospect of testing their new guest’s creative skills – not patience, that’d be rude – was too good to pass up.
The contents of the kitchen table were pauper’s choices, honestly. A handful of pelts, odds and ends left over from birds long since parted out for other projects, a couple of smaller skulls, coils of heavy aluminum wire for armatures. Clary sifted through the remnants with a careful hand and a dubious expression.
“Surprise me.” He dropped off a tack hammer and a few brads on his way past. She made a faint incredulous noise, her head swiveling to follow, and Stan shot her a flat look of challenge: Show me what you’ve got, bean-counter.
Her shoulders stiffened, and she settled cautiously into one of the kitchen chairs. “Pliers?”
“Toolbox under the table.”
The toolbox jangled heavily as she hauled it up into easy reach. He tuned out the low noise of her work for a while. His own projects kept him plenty busy – sprucing up the display cards for a couple of the new oddities Soos had incorporated, reviewing the merch inventory and a couple of new concepts, moving on with a hum of pleasure to update the current supply list for the Stan O’War.
It was the better part of an hour before he heard the chair scrape back. “Tinfoil?” Clary asked.
“Two drawers over from the fridge.”
A few clunks and a crinkle, then he heard her muttering spoon, spoon under her breath, clattering through the silverware drawer. She paced back over to the table and dragged the chair back in with a shallow sigh. Stan glanced over and saw her hunched over an armature, brow creased as she padded out the shape.
“You all right over there?” He was trying not to laugh. This was not the kind of focus he’d been expecting.
“Flashbacks to high school art class, nothing too traumatic, I promise.”
This went on for a while. Stan drifted out of the kitchen to track down one of the Shack ledgers and his last box of spare critter bits, which he set wordlessly at her elbow. She ransacked the contents and didn’t look up when she spoke. “Putty?” He rattled through a drawer and dropped off half a jumbo packet of the plumber’s two-part type on the table, which Clary pulled in and unwrapped.
It was well past five when something mostly complete sat before her. She had come up with a compact little mustelid nightmare, something weaselish in build with elaborate grasping talons pieced together from every sharp claw remaining amid the sorry leftovers he’d dumped out of his dwindling box of tricks. Wings scavenged from a sharp-shinned hawk he’d collected on some roadside ages ago were anchored in half-furled at the shoulders. The mink skull had been carefully if inexpertly re-skinned. Brow ridges and tiny, twisting horns sculpted out of plumber’s putty crowned the toothy head.
The thing was cute in an amateur way. He thought, bemused, that it might make a decent plush toy.
Clary flipped the critter over, features creased in complete concentration as she stitched in the last bits along the belly. “Got any paint?”
Stan folded his arms, trying and failing to suppress a grin. “Y’know, normally I’d just patch together bits from a fish, a squirrel and a chicken, and call it good.”
“Hell with that, we’ve got tourists to impress.” Clary hissed under her breath as she stabbed herself with the needle. When she finally stretched, he heard her neck pop and saw the wince. “What time is it anyway?”
“Half past time to pack it in, kid.”
She sat up straight in surprise, glancing out the window into the saturated deep-golden light of late, late afternoon. “Oh no.”
Stan tilted his thumb her way, letting the grin widen. “So I think you might be on the hook for pizza tonight. Seein’ as how you’ve been dead to the world for hours and we’d be goin’ with cereal otherwise.”
An indignant pause hung in the air as her brows rose sharply. “There’s still plenty of time for me to call my insurance company. I might well have whiplash. Those old-school bench seats with no headrest are infamous for that.”
He slung a dirty look over his shoulder as he retrieved the paintbox from a cupboard. “Ford said you were fine.”
“I don’t think I heard him mention a medical degree in that list he rattled off.”
“All right, fine, we’ll split pizza for the gang.” Her eyes narrowed to calculating slits. “Lady, you drive a hard bargain. Howsabout you tell me what this thing is and then we’ll talk.” Stan opened the paintbox and sorted through half-empty tubes of acrylics. “You know how to drybrush?”
“Nope.” Clary studied her spiky-clawed creation, somewhat at a loss. “Let me mull this over a moment….”
“It helps to have some idea what you’re doin’ before you start stitchin’ things together, y’know.” Stan picked out a dark chocolate brown and laid down a quick basecoat on the horns. “You’ve outfoxed the IRS? Then all you gotta do is think on your feet.”
There was a brief quiet. The weight of her gaze lingered on him as he dipped into a deep purple and started shading along the inner edge of the brow ridge.
“This is the lesser Northwestern horned hawkweasel,” she said at length, adopting the deep, plummy tone of a nature-documentary narrator. “Or the midnight mink. Fierce far out of proportion to their size, these crafty, fearless creatures feed mainly on fish and whatever birds they can catch. Usually solitary, as the moon wanes they gather up in gangs to hunt their favored prey – nightmares. The bigger, the better.”
“Where’s a winged weasel gonna find nightmares in the depths of the Cascades?” Stan plucked out a liner brush and limned the eyes with a perfect pinstripe of metallic teal.
“Everything that can think has dreams. These little fellas like the blackest, bleakest ones they can find, and some of the denizens of these forests have deep and terrible dreams. If not for these guys, some of those denizens might wake up.”
Stan snorted in soft amusement as he laid highlights in along the horns. “Not terrible for a first shot. Soos might dig the idea, and hell, at least Lovecraft’s long since out of copyright, yeah?” He sat back, assessing, then touched on a last few dots of color. “This is about as show-ready as it’s gonna get. Hang on a sec.”
He toted the not-quite-weasel down to the office, setting it on the least cluttered file cabinet for later – it was going to need a story card at the very least – then swung by the deserted gift shop, cracking the vending machine open to fish out a couple of ice-cold Pitts. Clary was packing away tools by the time he returned to the kitchen, and he set a can within easy reach. “Nothin’ like a cold one to finish up the day. Cheers.”
“Cheers.” She picked up her can, popped it, then tapped its edge against his. “I’ve got to wonder.” He eyed her, momentarily wary, as he dropped into his own chair. “What possessed a man from New Jersey to land way out here in the hinterlands of Oregon? It’s certainly pretty, but this is about as close to the absolute middle of nowhere as I’ve ever been.”
“You actually interested in me? Or do you ask everyone these kinda questions?”
“I’m mainly interested in you.”
That was a bit of a surprise. A chuckle snagged in Stan’s chest as he met her frank regard. “Usually the longest I can get people to listen to me is when I’m sellin’ somethin’, and even then it’s tough luck.”
“I don’t buy that for a second.” The faint curve of her smile was half obscured by the rim of her soda can. “No way you kept this place running for so long without knowing how to string an audience along in suspense.”
“It’s, ah, it’s a knack. I’ve been good at it ever since I was a kid.” He cleared his throat and took a lingering sip, buying a moment. Her brows quirked in expectation. “So, you’re serious?”
“How long do you plan on leaving me in suspense?”
“The last time someone started askin’ personal questions, she tried to eat me,” Stan muttered. “Can you imagine? I’m practically skin and bones.”
That bought him a sharp laugh, right on the beat. “Come on. You can’t just leave it there.”
Stan took a long look at her, then drew breath, fired up the cockiest grin in his repertoire, and launched in. “So, y’see, there’s this irresistible thing called ‘revenge’….”
Clary was a good listener and a better interrogator, absorbing whatever outrageous half-truth he had to offer without scoffing, pressing with well-targeted questions at every opportunity. Every time she cut close to the bone he’d flash her something shiny to distract. Verbal sleight-of-hand was so second nature by now that he barely noticed doing it. Stan couldn’t tell how much of it she was buying, which was disconcerting as hell.
In the end he paid for the pizza. She slipped in behind him to press an overgenerous tip into the delivery driver’s hand.

There are plenty of repair records in the glove box, the old manual, and some other potentially interesting odds and ends.
Just take the repair records and the manual.
Go through all the personal paperwork.
Is there any money in there?

Fanfic Progress Update: Light at the End of the Tunnel and Going Forward (Part 2 of 2)
Part 1: Here
Sorry this took awhile get out, my lying ass said “a few days” last time, but a month is about the same amount of time... right? I’ve been busy trying to finish up a fic I wrote for a very helpful friend as a Christmas gift, which obviously isn’t late as crap now. Besides that, some unavoidable stuff came up (including having my phone containing writing notes totally crap out on me, internet issues, oh and almost becoming homeless because my landlord jacked up rent a bunch without notice, forcing me to try to sell my plasma and to scramble for money. That was fun. But thats a whole other story).
I hope you’ll understand that real life troubles have to take priority. I know, it’s always excuses with me, sorry. I wish I could control my life and not have all this shit constantly come up too.
Okay, now that my customary pathetic excuses are out of the way let’s get down to business! First up? Fic progress updates! But PREPARE FOR AN ONSLAUGHT OF WORDS! (as if that’s anything new).
The Bonds That Never Break: The last piece of the “Birthday” chapters (which were originally supposed to be one but got split because all these issues) has had some progress (maybe 1/4 of the way) and won’t be a difficult undertaking finishing it up since I know what I want to do, but... Honestly I've hit a major roadblock with the fic beyond this point. My ideas for original stuff are coming up empty and simply rewriting the entire plot isn’t my plan (even now I think the ratio is too far skewed for canon content without enough additions of my own).
The problem as I said in my Author’s Notes of the most recent chapter is the format keeps me tied to the canon, which limits my options. I love the idea, but I can’t deny doing a faithful canon rewrite is a pain sometimes. And in the coming chapters my new ideas are pretty much nil beyond a few scattered chunks from the Konoha Crush arc to about halfway through Shippuden.
Side Note: I planned on skipping canon rewriting most of Shippuden. The fights with Akatsuki and such don’t really play into Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship and I’m not interested in doing that much extra legwork beyond the main focus of this fic. I only care about the dorks and their story and elements of the anime that deal with it. So beyond that, we’ll jump a bunch of that and go directly to the end, a new ending where they get together eventually, where everything will be new.
So me being stuck being the case, I MAY skip forward a ways to something more solidly planned and thought out, and come back later to fill in the gap. Maybe to the point after the ending where everything is my own creation so we can see the dorks repairing their relationship and just making out like they SHOULD have done from the start. We’ll see what happens. I’d be very interested in hearing reader’s opinions, maybe I’ll set up a poll to see what you you think.
I REALLY think I need to put this on hold for a while and watch the anime start to finish, to help inspire me and bring back my passion. I love these guys but over the last year and a half my interest has faded. I need to get back into the ship and reignite those feelings I first had when I started the show so I can channel that into better chapters.
The Horny Canine Boys of the Hidden Leaf Village: Having trouble with this one too. To put it in semi-simple terms, I know what I want in chapter A and chapter C, but connecting them together with chapter B is causing me issues. Haven’t started the next chapter yet (technically the conclusion to the most recent one, since I broke that up because I wasn’t finished and had gone so long without updates) but I do know what it will involve and have plenty of notes so it shouldn’t take TOO long. That being said, from there I’m not sure what to do. I might skip forward and do chapters later on in the story first since I have a clearer idea of what I want them to be. This fic is mostly porn without plot so it’s not like skipping around would matter that much, but it’s still pretty frustrating. Probably going to make a poll for this one too, to get reader’s opinions regarding to skip or not.
Dogs Keep it in the Family: Some progress on finishing up the update I cut short, mainly need to assemble all the parts and ideas together into a cohesive whole. So not too much work. The problem with this one is mainly issues of quality I have with it, content not meeting my expectations. I have plenty of notes and a few more chapters plotted out, it’s mainly just finding the occasions where I can get some good writing done. That aside there’s also a lot of questions beyond the first couple chapters of what I want to include that I’m not sure about. I need to think more about this one.
The Unorthodox Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy: The next chapter of the Charizard segment is roughly half way done. But I pushed this out way too soon mainly because I was so sick of it being constantly on my “To-do list” in an in-progress state during months and months of interruptions. Going forward though I’m not really sure what I want to do with it; I simultaneously have this grand vision, but an abnormal lack of concrete ideas for new chapters. I’ve had some little sparks of inspiration and prompts, but beyond that I’m just not feeling it flow into a greater idea.
Here’s my planned schedule for this round of updates. Thing’s could change, but I’ll make a notice if they do.
1. Untitled Inuyasha fic; Koga/Ginta/Hakkaku threesome. This is a gift for a friend I’ve been trying to finish for weeks now
2. The Bonds that Never Break. Last segment of the Birthday chapter
3. The Horny Canine Boys of the Hidden Leaf Village. Next half of the Dogs Will Play chapter. This one has the least recent update (and is by far my most read fic) so I might push it ahead.
4. Dogs Keep it in the Family. Last chunk of the Mother’s Stern Hand chapter
5. The Unorthodox Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy. Second half of the Charizard segment
Next are details of my plans going forward. It’s lengthy (it’s ME after all) but important so I’d recommend checking it out. Long story short: After updating each of my current fics, I’m temporarily switching over from the large projects above to one-shots for a time.
But I’ll still be writing and I’m not dropping any of those big fics! I just need a break from the intensive work they require.
On to other matters. If you’ve read my other insanely long updates (if you have you’re a trooper) you’ll know I haven’t been having a great time for a long while. If not, check Part 1 or older Progress Updates for more info. Long story short, I’m completely worn out from endless months and months of bullshit. Even though its FINALLY quieted down now, I still need a break.
You might say, “But you’ve been on hiatus for months!” That was because I could never get a night without fist fights or drunk parties or literal death threats being screamed all hours. That hiatus was because I couldn’t focus, because I was in a stressful situation and had no real alternative.
Now I’m saying I need some mental health time, a break from scrambling between fics that went without updates or had half finished chapters as compensation for that utter nonsense, trying to catch up and failing to get back to normal because of it. I went straight from that atmosphere into rapidly trying to get everything back up to speed, never taking a breather and celebrating my freedom. I need to take a few steps back and gather myself, actually breathe easy without fears of drunk assholes trying to break in to people’s apartments, before I jump back into things.
Because of all that crap, I had to make do with putting out lazy and poorly constructed work. It made me feel like a shitty writer and that I was letting readers down. I can’t express how awesome people who stuck by patiently waiting for updates, understanding I wasn’t in a great place, really are. But not doing my best made me feel like I wasn’t meeting expectations of people who had been so nice. Yes it’s just fanfiction, maybe I’m getting dramatic, but still.
I’m so sick of putting out half-assed or incomplete chapters and fics. Rushing from one to another, scrambling to make updates that aren’t complete or as polished as I would like, leaving this trail of disappointment behind me. I look at what I’ve produced lately and I’m just so deeply unhappy with the quality. Most of that was the horrible situation I was in, but now it’s my haste, like I’m trying to do 5 things at once to catch up now that things are okay and none end up great. I appreciate dearly readers supporting me and being understanding all this time. But when you KNOW you can do better and aren’t meeting your own expectations it’s very frustrating. I take my writing, even if it IS only fanfiction, seriously. I feel a commitment to making the best chapters for people who enjoy what I do.
These big projects are so exhausting, so much work tweaking them just right. All the effort and time I spend has just worn me out. It’s gotten to the point that I’m starting to resent working on them, it feels like an obligation. I rush through stuff trying to make everyone happy and in the end my work suffers. It’s tough to make good stuff when it feels like a chore. And that’s never a good mentality to have when writing. I’m not doing my best work when it’s not fun.
Add to that the fact that my notes are an ABSOLUTE CLUSTER FUCKING MESS. Bits and pieces of stories saved in Google Docs, on my phone, and written in spirals, scattered everywhere. There are things for both Canine Boys and Bonds that I didn’t write down when I was breezing through work that I have now forgotten in my haste to churn out dwindling chapters and struggle with all the bullshit that had overwhelmed my life. That’s a big problem.
For example. In Canine Boys I know what I want to do with chapters 5 and 7, but my notes on 6 are paltry and I have since forgotten what I wanted to do. Problematic, even if it is just porn.
And there are pieces to the planned ending of Bonds that are hazy and difficult to remember because of the time that has passed, mental stress, and lack of organization. I need to get things in order first thing.
No joke, when I look at all my future plans and mess of notes, sometimes I get micro-panic attacks. Because there’s just SO MUCH to do, SO MUCH I need to plan and write, and oh god what did I forget this time, ugh I can’t figure out how to move on and do the next chapter, I can’t remember what good thing I planned for this and I’m disappointing my readers!!! ect. It’s truly overhauling sometimes. And it’s not pleasant or an effective way of writing. I need to get this mess sorted out, lay back and have some brainstorming to fix all those plot and continuity issues.
As if that wasn’t enough, my phone had loads of good things saved on it, ideas for both Bonds and Canine Boys that were GREAT and necessary to moving the stories forward. Well a few days ago it totally crapped out and I can’t access it. Losing the notes saved on my phone has left me pretty bummed. It’s like a knife in the heart. Because I had SO. MANY. GOOD. IDEAS. ON. THERE. And the thought of them just gone makes me just want to give up because I worry I won’t ever come up with something to match and replace all that was lost.
So yeah, I need to take a step away from these big works. All that being said, I’m not on hiatus anymore. More like semi-hiatus. I’m taking a break from “serious” writing, from these huge projects (all 4 current fics would count) and switching over to some smaller one shots in the meantime. I need time to recoup and rest and actually celebrate my newfound peace and quiet without deadlines. I want to work for a while with worrying about timely updates or letting readers down with quality issues. I’m going to take a breather, regain my confidence, organize my disaster notes, and come back strong, RATHER than keep limping along as I have been.
SO, once I make one more update to each of those 4 fics, I’ll be putting them off to the side for a while and focusing on simpler one shots. Hopefully people will check those out too, it’s still me and my style, just smaller (and a friend joked that I don’t do small projects. A one shot for me is like 10-20k words).
After these updates, which in all honesty won’t be my greatest work, not that I’ve been excelling for a while, I am DONE doing shoddy unfinished work. No more.
Once these chapters are out I’ll be shifting to one shots for a temporary cool down so I can gather my thoughts and organize my ideas. This should mean when I come back to these the quality is better, my inspiration is restarted, and I can get back on track writing fluidly instead of struggling.
I have no idea how long this period of smaller works could last. I would estimate anywhere between 3-9 months, since I want a more long term period of separation. Too much focus and worrying has made dealing with them tedious, I just don’t want to have to worry about them for a bit.
As you can see from teh Future Ideas section of my Masterlist I have LOOOTS of ideas. A good number of WIPs were recently inspired by my friend Ren and his beautiful, dirty mind. No I am not working on all those works in the Future Ideas at the same time, this is just a list of ideas that have popped into my head over time. Some may eventually be dropped if I can’t work them properly, but I do have a good chunk of progress already done on a number of those, while others have a few paragraphs written, and some are pretty much a premise and a few sentences.
Do not expect all those to be finished soon. This is a VERY VERY long term look at my plans. Like, over the few years or more probably, knowing how slow I write and how annoyingly perfectionist I am. I will likely shift priorities around between all these as new ideas inspire me or old fics require attention, but from now on I plan on trying to focus the bulk of my attention on 2 or 3 projects at once. Sort of like an assembly plant; one fic in pre-production, one in the process of being built, and one getting the final touches. That way I can churn things out more efficiently. I think that's a much better way to balance all my fics than rushing to and fro manically.
DO NOT WORRY! Just because I have all these future plans doesn’t mean I’m abandoning any of my current fics; Bonds that Never Break, Canine Boys, Dogs Keep it in the Family, and Journey of a Pokemon Breeder Boy will still get attention and I have plenty of thoughts, notes, and plans for those going forward. This list of fic ideas is just a glimpse into my thought process and future plans, in addition to somewhere I can keep readers updated with my priorities (I’ll make updates here as well).
I know what you’re probably thinking. “Oh great, more fics you won’t update on time.” Or “Perfect, the one I like is being pushed aside by this new stuff.” Remember this semi-hiatus is only temporary. Most of the ideas I have in mind are one shots. And they aren’t as intensive as my current works, they’re a much needed break so I can refocus and collect ideas for the major projects. I’m not abandoning ANYTHING, NONE of my fics are getting dropped. I’m just taking a more long term view of things so I can stay in shape.
I’m deeply sorry if some people don’t want to deal with that and jump ship, I completely understand your frustration. I fully expect to lose some readers, much as that pains me. But most importantly I need to do what’s right for me.
There’s a saying, “The candle that that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” I’m at that point. I don’t want to burn bright with a few good chapters and end up burning myself out before really finishing anything.

Meta...ish...sorta
So I have debated writing about this for a while, because it will no doubt be polarizing for a lot of people, but with Infinity War about to come out of DVD,Blu-Ray and that good stuff and having seen a bunch of gifs surrounding this, I feel comfortable stating my thoughts. So just take it how you will and if you agree or disagree, that’s totally fine. But here it goes.
I have such mixed feelings about Tony/Pepper.
Allow me to explain, for this is not a new thing. In fact, I’ve felt this way since the first Iron Man. So let’s start from the beginning.
Iron Man 1
When we are first introduced to Pepper, I was 100% on board. She was classy and sassy, took no shit from anyone and was fiercely loyal to Tony.
Tumblr media
I mean, look at this power girl. She knows Tony has important shit to do and can’t be bothered with awkward breakfasts or underhanded remarks from “Miss Brown” here. So, in the most classiest way, she basically tells her to GTFO, bitch. I loved it!
And then there first interaction. Oh my god, the cuteness!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, look at these two! They’re so cute! Pepper being the studious, responsible one, reminding the man-child Tony of all the stuff he has to do, all while Tony playfully flirts with her. Adorableness personified!
I mean, most of them in this movie is just so heartwarming! Tony hearing Pepper call his name while he’s being tortured, Pepper having cried when he came back, the little bicker they had when Tony wouldn't go to the hospital, how she stood by him even after he shut down his weapons manufacturing division when it would’ve been so easy to jump ship, the fun interaction with her helping change his arc reactor. I mean, guys, they were on a roll with this! I loved it!
Then came the first point of contention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Pepper finds out what Tony is doing, she tries to stop him and even tries to quit. Now I gave her the benefit of the doubt here, because what Tony was doing was kinda crazy. This was all before SHIELD and the Avengers, so him deciding to just superhero it up was obscenely dangerous. And, to her credit, she listens to him when he explains why he has to do this and does eventually help him download the files and stop Obadiah. All in all, this film was a great set up to their relationship and I so wish it continued on this path.
But alas, it did not. Then comes Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2
Okay, I’m gonna try not to rant too much on this one, but honestly, this part kinda gets me heated up. So, us as the audience are privy very early on to the fact that Tony is dying from palladium poisoning, spelled out by JARVIS who says, “The device keeping you alive is also killing you.” So like, whoa, holy shit! What’s Tony gonna do now?
So, in comes Pepper! Right off the bat yelling at Tony for donating their art collection.
Tumblr media
Okay, fine. That was probably frustrating after all the time Pepper spent curating it, but...does she even stop to question why Tony is doing that? It’s clearly out of character, or else she wouldn’t be so shocked and mad. Remember, this is supposed to be one of the people who knows Tony best and yes, Tony hides his emotions and thoughts really badly, but this is a blatant sign that something is wrong. But her first reaction is to shout at him? Okay, that’s not gonna get him to tell you what’s going on. At all. If anything, it’s gonna make him retreat farther into his shell.
And another thing that kinda peeves me is she only chills out when Tony promotes her to CEO. Okay, yeah, huge promotion anyone would be happy about, but did she just forget that Tony is acting super out of character? That something might be seriously wrong?
Then the bit where Natasha/Natalie comes in and they sort of fall back into the goofy, cuteness argu-flirting during that scene, so I’m kinda like, “Okay, we’re back on track!”
Then...The Grand Prix
Tumblr media
No, no, I’m sorry, but I’m with Tony here. What the hell was he supposed to do? Okay, being in the race was a last minute, reckless move but was he just supposed to run away? Let Vanko cut up more cars and hurt more people? Uh, no. That’s not who Tony is. People were in trouble, he wanted to help. And he gets yelled at for it.
Then the plane ride home.
Tumblr media
Ding, ding, ding! Hello! I mean, does this guy need a giant flashing neon sign that reads “I’m not okay”? He is clearly acting super off in this scene, not wanting to go home, wanting to “be healthy” in Venice. He is practically holding himself back from completely losing it in front of her, and she doesn’t even notice? Okay, aftermath of a battle, nerves are frayed, I get it. But come on! It’s plainly obvious!
Hell, the first person Tony opens up to isn’t even Pepper, it’s Rhodey. The guy who realizes, “Hey, Tony is not okay. Let’s put aside all this bureaucracy BS for one second so I can find out what’s going on with my friend.” And him genuinely caring about that let’s Tony open up. Hell, he shows Rhodey the burnt out palladium. And yes, later they fight, but he trusted Rhodey in that moment to let him see him at his weakest.
I’m gonna skip the party scene a bit because I can honestly see both sides. Sure, Tony is acting a bit like a jackass and Pepper is tired, but again, this is still another red flag she just doesn’t catch.
And then the scene that really had me questioning this ship real hard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, I get it I really do. She is frustrated and overworked. We’ve all been there But she doesn’t even try to listen to him. This is Tony Stark we’re talking about, a man who knows how to talk about his feelings about as well as a fish knows how to fly. And here he is, trying to explain everything that’s going on, stammering over his words and trying to explain his side and she just cuts him off, like nothing. This isn’t even an argument at this point, this is just shouting louder than someone else and refusing to hear them. This scene really rubbed me the wrong way. Tony doesn’t have anyone else at this point. Rhodey’s gone, his house is a wreck, Fury is just cryptic. He needs someone. And she just shuts him down, because she’d frustrated. Like, that is just so low to me.
But okay, the movie goes on, they have the battle at the Expo and Tony saves her. Got it, got it. Cool! The interaction on the roof was cool and the kiss was cute, but honestly...it was just more bickering? And the kiss, the more I think about it, doesn’t seem earned after all that’s happened above.
But okay! Maybe things will be better next movie, right? Wrong!
Iron Man 3
Now, I’m largely skipping The Avengers, because their interactions are limited and, for the most part, kinda cute. Even the little bicker with the 12% comment was kinda light and funny. They really did have nice interactions, cute moments of flirting and it even kinda made me sad that Tony couldn’t connect to Pepper before flying into space. Overall, I have no problem with them in the Avengers.
That’s not the case in Iron Man 3.
Now this section is largely gonna be void of pictures and too much ranting, because I’ve already gone over my least favorite scene in this meta here: http://starkxsarcasm.tumblr.com/post/169317464612/musings
But I’m still gonna touch on some things.
Tumblr media
Okay, but for real. Can someone explain to me what the fuck is going on here in this scene? Like, honestly. I’m lost. Pepper has just told Happy she’s been batting Killian off with a stick for years because he’s constantly asked her out. I think all girls can relate to that one guy who just won’t take no for an answer, so when I heard her tell Happy this, I was like, “Go, girl! Be that strong woman!”
But oh no, Killian’s turned..hot?! (I used that term loosely, because to me he looks like a bag of unflavored corn chips) But...seriously?! Because he’s cleaned up a bit, you’re suddenly all taken aback and all like, “You look great!” Girl, this was a creepy guy, creeping on you creepily for years! Now you’re letting him touch you and be all flirty without kicking him in the nuts?!
I’m totally on Tony’s side here! He has a right to be jealous, if this is how she acts towards some creep who got a five dollar makeover! To her credit, she turns down his proposal, but then acts all flustered and blushy when he leaves. What the hell, Pepper? What happened to that power girl who told “Miss Brown” to kindly fuck off?
And then the subsequent “I can’t sleep” through “Tinker with that” scene which....*deep breath* Yeah, if you wanna know my feelings on that, read the above linked meta post, because talking about it more is just gonna make me angry.
And, even after all that, even after Tony plainly explains he is not okay, the next scene with Maya is literally just Pepper taking potshots at Tony, calling Maya an “old girlfriend” and arguing with him about all that’s been going on. And yes, Tony was dumb threatening the Mandarin. Yes, Pepper has a right to be freaked out. But honestly, when is enough gonna be enough? He is trying to do the best he can, while also suffering from PTSD. Shouting at him is not going to help! I don’t know how many times I can say that before it sticks. Then the house collapses and she thinks Tony is dead and it’s sadness all around. She gets kidnapped again, Tony has to save her. Fast-forwarding because, again, I largely have no problem with these scenes. I even kinda like the “I got you.” “I got you first” line.
Then, when Tony finally does come to rescue her, first thing she does is call him a jerk. Um...okay? You’re welcome? He just fought through hell and back to get to you, but sure, “jerk” works, I guess. Then the mad scramble for Tony to go and get her followed by thinking she’s dead. Again, no problem with this bit, but that may be due to RDJ’s phenomenal acting during it, because damn, he sells it.
And then boom! She’s alive and we get some fairly cool kickass bits from her before it all settles down. Now one line that has always bugged me is the “And all your distractions?” Distractions? Like Tony said at the end, his suits are not distractions, they’re cocoons. When is she going to realize that? Also, no, “So are you going to get help for your PTSD and nightmares?” Nope, just “distractions.”
Not gonna go into Civil War, since Pepper isn’t in it, but if anyone wants to hazard a guess as to why they’re taking a break, *gestures to above text* take your pick!
And now for Homecoming and Infinity War
These I’m combining because the problem I have with the relationship now bleeds into both movies and here it is.
Is it just me or does Pepper seem bizarrely disinterested in marrying and having a family with Tony?
Think about it. When Happy pulls out the ring, she gets this look on her face like, “Uh, excuse me?” That may be from the fact that Happy had been carrying it around so long, sure, but then when Tony tries to defend it, she’s all, “I can think of something better.” Um...ouch.
Then in Infinity War, the line, “If you wanted a kid, you wouldn’t have done that.” Speaking, of course, to his new arc reactor. But...what does that have to do with anything? Pepper, after all this time, is still riding Tony’s ass about being Iron Man and helping save the world and her, and is holding the fact that he wants a kid over his head, almost in revenge. Like, “Well, you chose this, so no kid for you!” And she constantly shoots down talks about a kid and the wedding and just....did you take the ring or not, honey?! What is your issue?
Again, I know this will be polarizing for people, and you’re not stupid or wrong if you like the ship, but guys, I’m gonna be honest. I’m kinda just over it. It started off with such promise and just degraded into unpleasant arguments, ignoring when Tony needs help, and constant “yes, no” backs and forth conversations.
It’s just not a fun ship for me anymore. I wish it was.

The Inevitable StS Rewatch, Episodes 31-35
YES, I AM STILL MAD ABOUT SHUN!!!!!
- Even though Saori isn't a fighter, I'm glad she feels like part of the team in scenes like this! Shun telling her to watch over Seiya and her "understood" response, hnngggg.
- Recent events must be wild from Saga's POV (uncluttered with confused early filler and misunderstood lore.) There's no way for him to even be sure if Aiolos is really dead at this point, is there? I think you could easily swing a similar setup to the anime with Saga recently becoming paranoid and more brutal ever since the Galaxian Wars aired on TV, even taking out the "oh no everything changed when the pope's evil brother attacked!"
- It's not a big deal, but every time stuff like the steel ball-wielding Saint or the frisbee Saint pop up, I'm just like... WHAT HAPPENED TO ATHENA FORBIDDING WEAPONS, GUYS? has anyone told dohko that these jerks are stepping on his territory?
- hyouga and shun sure are married. in other news, water wet, sky blue, etc etc
- Hi again, Ikki! Nice to see you back and at least 80% more in character? Still a little too specifically protective of Saori but a big improvement from the last time you were here, at least!
- I MEAN, HANGING OFF EITHER ENDS OF A CHAIN ON A TREE BRANCH CAN BE A LEGIT DATE, TOO, HYOSHUN!
- "Oi, Shun! Oi!" hnnnngggggg, and then telling Shun to go up first, hnnnnggggg. swan may be a dumbass but he is a very sweet boyfriend
- Something about these two as a duo, even - or maybe even especially - lurking in the background together is so fucking charming. I think part of what makes the HyoShun feel oddly real even at this stage is Hyouga's weird insistence on saying Shun's name at every opportunity...? But they really do have this natural chemistry where they feel especially, quietly fond of each other.
- headless ikki is hilarious
- "Heh, if Shun and Hyouga can't survive getting thrown off a cliff on their own, they're losers anyway. Let's beat it" ah yes now there's the ikki i know and love!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- saori nooooooo!
- By the time she officially assumes her role at Sanctuary, Saori definitely hates herself. It's pretty painful seeing that process really get going in these past few eps.
Tumblr media
- Once again, as always, Hyouga comes across as really attentive to Shun. Something about the emphasis on the shot of Hyouga lifting his eyes to him before turning to Shun and addressing him directly when he didn't really need to. The charming thing about Hyouga is that yes, he puffs himself up, but he's also 100% earnest all the time - he doesn't feel self-conscious or defensive about his attentiveness or concern for Shun, either.
- Oh right, the Ikki backstory that for some reason they kicked to the present while cutting Shaka's role. That is a shame. This is one of those things in my grotesque Frankenstein-like personal Saint Seiya canon where the manga version does win out.
- I'M PRETTY SURE THE SETTING WITH ESMERALDA'S DEATH WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN THE ORIGINAL FLASHBACK...? I MEAN, OKAY, BUT...
- I feel like ordinarily I would be really annoyed by what a flat "I solely exist to make sad doe eyes and then be fridged" female character Esmeralda is, but the whole thing with "teehee, did you mistake me for your little brother again!" "Yeah, you look exactly like him!" "Teeheehee!" is so fucking weird it just drains me of all capacity to be potentially outraged...
- I ENJOY HYOUGA JUST CASUALLY INCLUDING HIMSELF AS ACCOMPANYING SHUN ON HIS IKKI INVESTIGATION LIKE IT'S THE MOST OBVIOUS THING.
Tumblr media
- Between this and his boyfriend's complex about his dead mom......... Shun sure has a hard life..........
- And now we're into Shiryuu's filler arc! Considering how weird the manga-anime relationship in StS is and how both fed into and revised each other, is it unreasonable to assume that Kurumada saw this set of episodes and went: "Tiger-themed character to contrast Shiryuu's dragon... Ohko... Ohko... Ohko........... d......ohko...? DOHKO......? WHOA YES NAILED IT"
- I do like the contrast in this episode between Shiryuu presenting a calm facade and "it'll be okay, any one of us would have done it" to the other Bronzies, but here in private he's having violent nightmares and obviously struggling with what's happened to him.
- I feel so sorry for Shunrei. Her body language and expressions here tell you a lot about the quiet frustration and anguish that she keeps pinned down under that gentle, supportive face. Hm, you and your future husband do have that in common, I suppose, Shunrei...
- It's still hard to see Shiryuu taking his frustrations out on Shunrei, though. Uncool, my dude.
- It's also hard to see Shunrei implicitly devaluing herself and "accepting" that her concern isn't enough to move Shiryuu on its own by bringing up Seiya and the others in order to motivate him - and then catching herself for letting an edge get into her voice.
Tumblr media
- Seiya, his weird early entry from the filler is over. Ikki gonna Ik. Best to just accept it, the way his younger brother mostly does...
- Hey, is this the first time Seiya belts out his "Saori-san"? An exciting occassion!
- I do think it's interesting and nice in the wider context that Saori comes to Ikki's defense here - both understanding that Saori is privately blaming herself for what happened to Shiryuu and Seiya, and knowing that Ikki is also incredibly damaged for things that she and her grandfather was responsible for. Ikki is fucked up and can't communicate well because of things Saori was complicit in, so yes, it's appropriate that she at least urge others to be understanding of him.
- kurumada flying bythe seat of his pants jokes aside ohko is a bad character sorry
- Seiya/Shiryuu fans must have been veeeeeery happy about this setup with Seiya searching for the magic water...
Tumblr media
- It must have taken a ton of courage and frustration for Shunrei to finally "snap" a bit and be honest about what she wants like this. Shunrei is in a painful position where she can't hate Sainthood and what it does to her loved ones, per se - because she was raised by Dohko and owes everything to Saints and has been basically indoctrinated into the SAINTS = NOBLE AND GOOD worldview as well - but it still tears her apart to see Shiryuu volunteer himself to get ripped to shreds, and hate himself and see himself as lesser if he can't do that. So she mostly just locks everything inside.
- I like her including "Seiya and the others will understand!" too, because it reflects her desperation and how much thought she’s quietly put into this.
- She's right, by the way, Shiryuu. You could be so happy with her. You are sort of unique amongst most of the Saints in that you really do have the capacity to find a good life outside of the Sainthood and be happy. RETIRE, GODDAMMIT. (Next Dimension made me a little bit upset, can you tell?)
- Considering Shunrei's courage in putting herself out there in a way she almost never dares to, it really sucks to see Shiryuu just totally reject her in a pretty cruel way. I get that he's hurting, but VERY uncool, man.
- And then Shunrei begging Dohko for help, and just getting "LOL THIS IS THE DESTINY OF SOMEONE WHO LIVES AS A SAINT!" Like, I think Shiryuu is a good guy, but really, Shunrei probably deserves a lot better than a Saint, period.
- And then Ohko and Shiryuu have a shounen fight where Shiryuu regains his self-confidence and Ohko finally grasps the meaning of true strength blah blah blah. Wow, Shunrei really was the most interesting part of this arc, huh?
- All the mumbling Dohko does in these eps about "I must return to my task" is weirdly hilarious to me, though. Like... what, did you take a break from watching the seal for a while? DID YOU LET RHADAMANTHYS SLIP OUT FROM UNDER THE WATERFALL TO OBSERVE THIS DUEL OR
- and then aiolos randomly decides that he wants to take a bath, trolling both graude and sanctuary alike. sure.jpg
Tumblr media
- Shiryuu, you stupid fuck. You absolute dumbass. You moron. You could be so, so, so happy. Goddammit, Shiryuu.
Tumblr media
- JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, MU
- KIKI IS FUCKING EIGHT YEARS OLD. you didn't leave him a note? did you leave him out food? i love the implication that mu disappeared because he's laying low since sanctuary's mooks are probably after him. YOU DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO WARN KIKI ABOUT THIS?
- ESPECIALLY SINCE A SANCTUARY MOOK DOES ACTUALLY SHOW UP LOOKING FOR MU WHEN KIKI IS THERE AND SEIYA HAS TO SAVE HIM?
- and then we spent an entire filler episode watching seiya climb a mountain and punch birds.
- next episode: HE HAS ARRIVED AT LAST. IT'S MILO TIME MOTHERFUCKERS

Which Prompt...?
Hey. As you guys know, the 130 Prompts are about to go on hiatus. I anticipate this being a fairly long hiatus (a year at minimum, probably closer to a year and a half). Reason being, Knots is about to catch up to Origin and I’d like to reroute my focus there, but I’m also trying to get my original works published, and I’m just trying to cut down on fanfic time in general to reach that goal.
Now, I recently shared my tentative upload list, and you may have noticed we have two Prompts left before hiatus. One of them will be “Trying Too Hard”, which is kind of our final bit of set-up for the Gary and Betty arc before everything clicks and you realize what I’ve been doing. Very excited. That one will definitely be uploaded before the hiatus, so no worries there.
BUT, I’m not sure which of the other Prompts I should post before this extended hiatus! I have four cool options that I’ve been flipping back and forth between multiple times a day. So if one of these catches your eye and you’d love to read it sooner rather than later, send me an Ask!
“Repeat” - Cosmo and Poof alternating POV; third-person limited. Teenage Poof begs and pleads with Cosmo for permission to drive his car, and Cosmo struggles to learn how to let go.
Pros:
Takes place not too long after “Shadow”, so it might be nice to have those too near each other. The original intention was for “Repeat” to mirror “Shadow” by focusing on the Cosmo / Poof relationship in parallel to the Hiccup / Anti-Wanda relationship we saw in “Shadow”.
I’m pretty pleased with my Cosmo portrayal. We don’t get to see him in my works much, so maybe you guys would like to have this.
So much Cosmo/Wanda fluff like seriously guys it’s cotton candy.
We get to meet Dusty! I was going to hold off, but he’s cute, so???
We learn a bit about Timmy’s and Remy’s fates, which is kind of interesting, but I wonder if we’d want those after the completion of Remy’s arc and such.
Concerns:
I have like four different endings for this piece, so I need to choose carefully. It’s going to take a lot of work to pick the best one, and what if I regret the one I chose later? Maybe it’s better if I think about it longer? In one ending we get a glimpse of Sammy Sweetsparkle’s fate and once we go down that path there’s no reversing... Might be best to wait.
One of the endings for this piece is fluffy, one is semi-fluffy, one is semi-angsty, and one is full angsty. I know you guys don’t have a lot of context at the moment, but feel free to let me know which way you’d like to see it go. If the Prompts feel deprived of fluff and you’d like more, by all means, say so!
“You’ll Never Know” - Young Anti-Mama Cosma’s POV (Just before she becomes pregnant with Anti-Schnozmo); third-person limited. It’s just pure, unadulterated Anti-Fairy culture. We just chuck you right into the Seven Festivals and experience every single day through the eyes of a local.
Pros:
The Seven Festivals are a cool part of Anti-Fairy culture that we don’t get to look at in quite this much depth during Frayed Knots. You guys might like watching the festivals play out in prose instead more than what you glimpsed in that worldbuilding post.
We get some depth about Anti-Florensa, as well as Anti-Cosmo’s dad and Anti-Bryndin when all three of them were younger.
This is a self-contained one-shot and might be a good posting choice so we’re not bringing in new plot lines just before the hiatus.
Concerns:
Maybe you guys need a break from Anti-Fairy culture after “First Things First” and “Shadow”? Not to mention “Watch and Learn” and Knots.
Technically everyone in this piece is a semi-canon OC. If that bothers you, you will be sad.
“Live For the Moment” - Foop/Hiccup’s POV; third-person omniscient. Foop and Hiccup, just shy of their 150,000th birthday, attend the annual Autumn Masquerade and are introduced to Anti-Coriander for the first time.
Pros:
We get to meet Anti-Coriander! Since we talked about her, Foop, and Anti-Marigold a lot recently in “Temptation”, it might be nice to see her.
Some cute fluff and talk about Anti-Fairy culture, which is a fun topic. Definitely not as in-depth as “You’ll Never Know”, but there’s a bit.
We get to meet Cavatina too! Although that might be a con, not a pro. He wasn’t supposed to show up, but apparently he did. He scares me. Listen kiddo, I adore you as a toddler, but you a scary tween, man.
Concerns:
I was going to wait until both the Gary and Betty and the Mark and Vicky arcs were done before we transition into the Cavatina arc. I want you guys to be excited about Cavatina, and I don’t want that excitement to burn out early.
Specifically, since “Trying Too Hard” will be posted around the same time, it’s probably less complicated to make you guys wait for Cavatina, rather than trying to balance the intrigue and foreshadowing of the Gary and Betty plot arc with the Cavatina stuff.
Even more specifically, Cavatina isn’t much younger than Poof and Foop, which means that he’s in his late tweens in this Prompt. I think I might prefer to wait until you guys have seen him as a kid before we see him as an adult. Unfortunately, waiting that long means it will be ages before we get to meet Anti-Coriander... but then again, that might help build the drama. That could be fun.
“Do the Math” - My document is so drafty that POV shifts between the fragments right now. Will probably end up first-person Remy POV. Remy and Juandissimo are attending the Fairy Reunion during Season 5 and totally minding their own business when Timmy Turner is suddenly charged with the Head Pixie’s murder. Rolling his eyes, Remy sets out on a quest to prove not only that the Head Pixie is alive, but that Timmy is innocent. Not to clear his rival’s name or anything- just to show off his detective skills and eat hot dogs.
Pros:
We just heard Timmy describing this event to Chloe in “This Is a Box” so it might be good for readers to get the context before they forget this event happened.
Juandissimo!!! There’s not a lot I can say without spoiling things, but some fleshing out goes down. Plus, who doesn’t like Remy?
There’s one Gary scene in this piece that I would love to get out of my system before “Trying Too Hard”, just to make you guys squirm a bit. Gary’s arc won’t suffer if we don’t, but it’s less squirm-inducing.
Concerns:
Didn’t....... get...... “Sentry”....... finished yet. Order... non-chronological.
The fact that Remy and Juandissimo are together again long-term will probably come up. Technically* only my blog followers really know this, and my readers don’t. Will this reveal make the Remy and Juan arc in the Prompts seem boring if we already know the ending? I sure hope not considering that I just reminded you guys about it again! I mean, since “Teacher’s Pet” exists it would be stranger if they weren’t, I guess.
Can’t... decide... what order to put my Juandissimo stuff in. Before the reveal in this piece, or after? If I reveal now, then I should be able to swing an upcoming Prompt to be more entertaining and in-depth than it currently is. I can be direct about his relationship with Cupid in the upcoming "Learn Your Place” Prompt if I post this one first, but I’ll have to skirt the subject if I flip the two and then it might not be as funny.
I’m still honing my Remy voice, and I’m worried that he isn’t quite bratty enough. Maybe I should set it aside and practice with him more first?
Like I said, I’ve been flipping between these four constantly. I just can’t decide! I still have the final say, and I know I’m being super vague about what’s to come, and so it’s hard to decide which one you’ll like the most, but if any of you would like to offer input before hiatus strikes, you’re welcome to.
Are you desperate for Cosmo/Wanda fluff? To meet Anti-Coriander and Cavatina? Juandissimo stuff? Pick your poison and let me hear it!

Mich and Rob - The Christmas Edition
**Hey there, I know you guys probably hate these little asides, but this one is compulsory. :-)  The anon that sparked this vignette likely has no idea what they’ve done.  Take your anti-nausea meds, bc this one’s over the top.  It’s my wildest dream (not in a kinky way, don’t get excited lol).  It breaks the barrier in terms of fluff, sentimentality, and downright ridiculousness, but I loved writing every single word.  A Christmas fantasy … oh, and nsfw.  PS - thank you @ladygrange for being so kind and patient.  You are too good to be true.  And thank you @waywaydowninside for your jewelry expertise!**
Michelle awoke to the quiet rattle of the glass panes beside the bed, her lips curving at what awaited her.  A soft blanket of pearly white covered the ground, and more was gently falling, swirling in the breeze.  Mindful that Robert was still asleep, she slowly eased onto her side, poring over the scene.  Bella will be so happy.  It was exactly the Christmas they’d hoped for, snowy, idyllic, like a fairy tale or a Norman Rockwell painting.  Except I’m in Wales now, she mused contentedly.  The day was reserved for just the three of them, as Robert’s family had left the previous evening, and Melody’s brood wasn’t due until the following afternoon.  Michelle relished the idea of a handful of peaceful hours and perhaps a visitor or two, as the neighbors were wont to do.  The calm before the storm.  Her gaze returned to the endless flakes dancing this way and that.  It was like a fairy tale, but then so was everything else.
Robert admired the arc of her waist, resisting the temptation to trace it with his finger.  Her silhouette was so beautiful in the muted morning light as she watched her white Christmas unfold.  A rare event, to be sure, but he couldn’t imagine it any other way.  He slid behind her, pulling her into him as he wrapped his arms around her.  “Happy Christmas, love.  Or should I say Merry?” he teased, kissing the spot below her ear that he knew she loved.
Michelle smiled at the comfort of his warmth.  “No, happy it is.  That’s the right way to say it, isn’t it?”
“Ah, yes, you’re one of us now.  Down to the proper surname.”  He caressed her cheek, pecking the tip of her nose.  “I knew you’d cave eventually.”
“Oh, really?  Did you?” she asked, lifting a brow.
Robert cocked his head.  “Yeah, I did.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“You’re right,” he admitted with a snicker.  “And you waited bloody long enough to.”
Michelle ran her fingers through the curls that were dusting his shoulder, taking in the lines of his impossibly handsome face.  The swell in her chest was nearly too much.  “I love you.  Everything about you.”
Robert brushed his lips across hers, words not adequate to relay the depth of what was in his heart.  His was a charmed life, and he knew it, but he couldn’t escape the sliver of insecurity.  What did he ever do to deserve her perfect devotion?  And the angelic little girl that he loved so much.  Christ.  He swallowed back the tightness in his throat, conjuring the closest thing he could find to the truth.  “I am the luckiest man that ever lived.”  He carefully coaxed her on her back, cradling her face as he kissed her again.  Her legs parted, instinctively folding around his waist as she clutched his shoulders.  Their kiss deepened, and she arched against him, his body immediately responding.  He sighed as he positioned himself, her sweet heat slowly enveloping him.  “Oh, baby, I love you so much.  You feel so …”  He froze at the tapping on the door, expelling a tense breath as a tiny voice called out to them.  “Bloody hell, she’s got impeccable timing.”
“So she does,” Michelle replied, chuckling.  “I’m coming, Bella.  Give me a second.”  She tried to wriggle out from underneath him, but he caught her.
“You know, um, if Bella had a brother or a sister, she’d stay more … occupied.”
“Not that again.”  Michelle swatted his arm.  “Get off of me.”
“Just a thought, you know.”  He gave her a little grin, releasing her.
The house was chilly from the long winter night, and Robert set about lighting a fire in the main living area.  He smiled blissfully at Annabelle’s persistent prattle as she trailed behind him, speculating about her presents and when she could open them.  Logs finally blazing, he snapped on the radio, plopping down on the broad sofa across from the hearth.  He helped himself to a few of the biscuits that Michelle had laid out on the tea table, his eyes sweeping over their bountiful tree.  It was draped in a wild mish-mash of delicate, glittering ornaments, coupled with popcorn strands and popsicle stick art buried in gold and silver tinsel.  Three crayon drawings of Strider in Santa hats completed the picture.  It was perfection.
“Can I open them now?”  Bella posed in front of him with a pout, hands on hips, her scowl looking just like her mother’s.  “I’ve been waiting all day.”
Robert patted the top of his thigh.  “We’ve only been awake for an hour or so, darlin’.  That’s hardly all day.”  He hoisted her up as she climbed onto his lap.  “Besides, your mum gets the final call on the day’s festivities.”
“What’s festivy?”
Amused, he kissed her cheek.  “Fes-tiv-i-ty.  It means, ah, having a good time.  Sort of like a party.”
“Like a birthday party?”
“Exactly.”  Robert breathed in deeply, having fallen under the spell of the magic mix of charred wood and spicy evergreen wafting through the room.  He peered across the mantle, inspecting the array of stuffed stockings one by one.  Four of them.  One for each member of the family, including Strider, naturally.  He gazed back to the majestic Nordmann Fir, holding Annabelle just a little bit tighter.  The moment was precious and pure, and he never wanted to forget it.  He closed his eyes, losing himself in the scents and sounds as Ray Charles sang about Georgia.
Michelle poured some tea, going over the items she’d laid out on the kitchen counter.  They weren’t going to have a large late afternoon meal, as they’d had countless the previous few days with family.  Instead, she was trying her hand at a traditional English breakfast, complete with a few Welsh additions.  She warily cased the laver cakes, unconvinced that local seaweed would be delectable, but Robert had insisted.  Welshman’s caviar, he’d called it, borrowing a quote from his beloved Richard Burton.  She snickered, recalling his near flawless mimicry of the actor’s famous baritone.  Deciding breakfast could wait, she exchanged her tea for something more spirited, puzzled by the quiet in the air.  The soft hum of chatter was conspicuously absent, the only noise being the music from the radio and errant pop of the fire in the living room.  Pouring a second glass of champagne for Robert, Michelle made her way there.
She spied them at once, savoring the cozy tableau.  Robert had fallen asleep, and Bella lay still and nestled onto his chest, with Strider at their feet.  She recorded the scene, enchanted.  How lucky they were.  A million to one chance that any of it would have ever happened, and yet it did.  She didn’t necessarily believe in fate, but moments like this made her second guess herself.  The collie lifted his head at her perusal, the tinkle of the collar Annabelle had gifted him, and that Michelle was quite sure he loathed, waking the little girl.  “Are you ready, Bella?”  Squealing, the child careened off her perch, racing to the stacks of brightly colored boxes sprinkled around the base of the tree.
Robert opened one eye, his mouth turning up.  “I guess that’s a yes,” he said drowsily as Annabelle ransacked her treasure trove.
The afternoon passed by like lightning, fueled by an unlikely visit from the Bonham clan, as well as more than a few neighbors.  It was an uproarious, happy day full of good cheer and questionable sweaters.  Laughs abounded, but Michelle had to admit she felt a little grateful as the last guest made their exit.  She dropped onto the couch as Robert shut the door, appraising the space, which was in shambles.  Scraps of wrapping paper and Christmas crackers were strewn about, and toys littered the room.  The adult versions did, too, in the form of various flutes and goblets, most empty or close to it.  She glanced at the clock on the mantle, dismayed to find that it was much later than she thought.  The idea of cleaning up became a bit too daunting, and, instead, she snuggled next to Robert, who’d joined her on the sofa.  “Nice hat.”
“Oh, is it still on?”  His hand glided to the top of his head, straightening the thin paper crown.  “Not a good look?”
“So regal.”
“You’d better be nice, or you’ll move to the naughty list.”  The singer drummed his fingers on the pillow beside him.  “You know, on second thought, that doesn’t sound …”
Michelle quickly cleared her throat.  “Bella and I have one more thing for you.”
“Really?  To what do I owe the honor?”
“At the moment, I really couldn’t tell you.”
“Very cheeky.  I like it.  As it happens, I have one more thing for each of you, as well.”  He leaned into her ear with a tipsy whisper, “Although yours is for a bit later this evening.”
“I can only imagine.”  Michelle rolled her eyes, padding to the tree.  “We’ll go first.”  She rifled through the mounds of crumpled paper until she found a small box, which she handed to Annabelle.  “Give that to your dad.”  She lowered her voice, “It’s the thing you picked out for him.”  Bella took the package, presenting it proudly to Robert.
“Well, what’s this?  It’s not a new sled, is it?”  He flipped the gift over, shaking it mightily as the little girl laughed.  “I suppose not.  Hmm, is it a puppy?”  He grinned as Bella giggled again.  “No?”  His grin grew as she shook her head.  “Well, then, let’s find out what it is.”  He slowly tore off the paper and opened the box.  In it, lay a long, thin chain.  He lifted it up, the lightning bolt pendant catching a glimmer from the light of the fire.  “Oh, Bella, I love it.  It’s exactly what I wanted.”  He swung the rope back and forth, finally catching the pendant in the palm of his hand.  “Thank you, honey.  Come here.”  He held out his arms, giving her a gentle hug and kissing the top of her head.  “Now, your turn.”
Robert fetched a large package from behind the tree, and Bella ripped through the paper like a child possessed.  Michelle gasped as she plucked her doll from the box.  It was the one he’d purchased for her on their last trip to Montreux.  How he’d kept it a secret, Michelle would never know.  The thought that he’d patiently kept it hidden until Christmas made her fall that much more in love with him.  She glanced back to Bella, noting her downtrodden expression.  “What’s wrong, baby?  Don’t you like your new doll?”  Nodding, Annabelle picked up the tiny figure, holding it close to her chest.  “Why do you seem so sad?”
“Jason got a baby sister for Christmas.”
Michelle exchanged a look with Robert.  “Well, that’s kind of true.  He does have a new baby sister, although I’m not quite sure it was a Christmas present.”
“But that’s what he said,” Bella replied, her brow wrinkling.  “If he got a baby sister, why can’t I have a baby brother?”
Michelle stole another peek at Robert.  Highly suspect.  “It doesn’t exactly work like that.”
“Then how do babies get here?  If they don’t come for Christmas?”
“Well, honey, your, um … dad will explain it to you as he puts you to bed.”  Robert cut his eyes at her, and she shrugged.  “After all, I’ve got to straighten up down here.”
Robert closed the bedroom door behind him, kicking off his boots.  “Well, that was fun.  Thanks for the desertion.”  He tugged his sweater over his head, tossing it onto the floor as he made his way to the bed.
“How’d it go?  Did you tell her all about the birds and the bees?”
“Not exactly.  She did get a pretty good run down on delivery by stork, though.”  He drew back the covers, his dimple deepening.  “Ooh, I see you found the present.”
Michelle ran her hand along the silky camisole of the nightgown.  “How could I miss it?  It wasn’t even wrapped.”
“It’s really my present, anyway.”
“Yeah, I know.”
He eased next to her, toying with the wide, crimson package at her side. “You, uh, said you had something else for me?”
She snapped up the box.  “Maybe you don’t deserve it.  Maybe you’re on the naughty list.”
“That’s okay with me.”  He busied himself with the buttons of her cami, beaming as she slapped him away.
“Good God, you’re insatiable.  Here.”
Robert plucked the gift from her hand, peeling back the paper.  He began his retort, stilling as he lifted the top.  His gaze traveled over the thick, silver links of the necklace that lay inside.  They were sort of rectangular with dark turquoise inlay, and very familiar.  He picked up the chain, surprised by how heavy it felt in his hand.  You know this.  But from where?
“Are you okay?” Michelle asked, jarred by his silence.  “Do you not like it?”
“No, I mean, yes, I like it.  It’s fantastic.  I just think I’ve seen it before.”
“Well, that’s a traditional inlay, probably Hopi.  You have other jewelry like it.”
“I don’t know.”  Robert tilted his head, his eyes narrowing.  “Where did it come from?”
“Well, believe it or not, that crazy little shop in Dallas.  Do you remember the place?”
“Christ, that’s it.  I saw it there when I was with … when did you get it?”
“A few years ago.  That summer in 73.”
“And you kept it this whole time,” he replied quietly, the memories flooding back to him.
“It felt like you, like a piece of you.”  Michelle glanced away, awash in memories of her own.  “I’d always hoped I could give it to you.”
“I love it.”  Robert studied her features, illuminated by the blush glow from the lamp on the bedside table.  “And I love you.”  He cupped her chin, giving her a gentle kiss.  “You and Bella, my most precious treasures.”
“Did you put her up to all that baby brother stuff?”
Robert shook his head, placing the necklace back in the box and setting it on the table.  “Surprisingly, I did not.”  He skimmed her thigh with his palm.  “But I would have had I thought about it.”  He continued across the peak of her hip, tentatively resting on the soft swell of her tummy.  “She was right there, yeah?”
“She was,” Michelle replied, her mouth curving.  His splayed hand was warm across her belly.
“It’s incredible,” he whispered, marveling at the mystery of it all.  “Did it hurt?  When you had her?”
“Yes.  Babies are big, well, compared to … some things.”  She smiled at the attempt at humor, but he didn’t smile back.
“I’m sorry, Belle.  I’m so sorry I wasn’t there, that you had to do it all alone.”  Robert swallowed, looking into her eyes.  “But I’m going to be there for the next one.  Every step of the way.”  She shifted, her eyes widening as he nodded.  “Yes.  The next one.  The one I’m going to give to you this very night.”  She opened her mouth to respond, and he shook his head.  “No, please, let me finish.  I want to watch your body change, feel a little kick for the first time, all of it.  It’s amazing, and I want to experience it with you.”
“I’m not sure what to say.”
“Say that we’re going to do it.  For Bella’s sake, if nothing else.”
“For Bella’s sake, right.”  Michelle quelled her amusement.  “Robert, I don’t think you …”
“Listen, I make the rules in this house.  Well, when you’re not making them, I mean,” he added hastily, sheepishly nibbling his lip.  “Baby, I love you.  And I can’t stop making love to you.  And it seems to happen when we do …” he trailed off, brushing a lock of hair from her face.  “So, there it is, darlin’.  It shall be done.  Tonight.  A Christmas conception,” he chimed with what he hoped was his most seductive smirk.  “Hey, that’s got a pretty good ring to it, doesn’t it?  Christ, just saying it is giving me a bloody …”
“Everything does.  My God, you talk too much.”  She yanked his head down, grabbing a fistfull of hair as their mouths collided.  She could feel his arousal through his jeans, and he grunted as she gave him a not so subtle squeeze.  She reached for the buckle of his belt, but he was already there, rolling onto his side to dispense with unnecessary garments, which were all of them.  As the pants tumbled onto the floor, she straddled him.  “Did you lock the door?”
“Shit, I can’t remember.”
She pressed against him, delighting in the hard length underneath her and large hands encasing her hips and backside.  “Fuck it.”
In a motion, Robert sat up, effortlessly flipping her over.  “I want you like this.  There are some things I’ve got to take care of.”  His gaze roamed over her body, lingering on her breasts.  “I need you very, very wet for what I have in mind.”  Her nipples were deliciously erect, like they always seemed to be, and he captured one in his mouth through the thin, silk bodice, luxuriating in her little mewl.  He nipped it, grinning as she jerked away.
“Ouch, that hurts!  I’m sensitive!”
“You are, huh?”  He slid the gown off and ran his tongue across the bud, flicking it lightly.  “Would that be everywhere?” he asked devilishly as he inched down her tummy, savoring the soft flesh along the way.  As he reached the top of her panties, he clasped the ties on either side, dispensing with the bows with a flourish.  He parted her legs, transfixed.  “Happy Christmas to me,” he purred, grazing his lips along the inside of her thigh.  “Every time I come tonight … and I intend to do it a lot, honey …”  He moved a little closer to her hot, wet center, delivering a kiss and then another, edging closer still.  “It’s going to be deep, deep inside of you.”  She gasped as he reached his destination, and he gave her a wicked smile.  “Just to be sure, you know.”
Michelle trembled as he gently opened her, spreading wider as she felt the warmth of his tongue lashing her most delicate spot.  She groaned as he did it again and again, her hand creeping into his hair.  “Oh, fuck, don’t stop.  Just like that.”  She shimmied her hips to urge him on, crying out as he slipped a finger inside.   She lifted her head, enthralled by the sight of him in between her legs, only to drop it as he slipped in a second.
There was a hum in the back of his throat as he found the other spot she loved so much.  He kept a slow, steady rhythm against it as he licked and sucked, relishing the moaning, writhing mess he’d turned her into.  “You taste so bloody good, darlin’.  Let me feel you come.”
“Oh, my God, Robert, I  …”  Her legs shook as the tension escalated into a delirious spiral.  She gripped the sheet as it wound tighter and tighter and tighter until she shattered, the rush of the release taking her breath away.  She buckled into the bedding, her pulse racing.  “Jesus Christ, how do you do that?”
“I think the better question is, how could I not?”  Robert nuzzled the slick, tender skin.  “You are … mmm, like a delicacy.  Sometimes I wish I could share you.”
“No, you fucking don’t.”
“You’re right.”  He crawled up the length of her body, framing her face with his forearms.  “You’re all mine.  To do with what I wish.  And, tonight, I think you know exactly what that is.”  He paused, caressing her cheek with his thumb.  “I can’t explain the feeling I have, Michelle.  It makes me crazy.  It’s like …”  He sighed, searching for the right words.  “It’s like I have this need to do it, this urge that I can’t control.  I never felt it before I met you, and I’ve never felt it with anybody else.  Just you.”
His lips met hers, their tongues lazily entwining.  Michelle could taste herself on him, the slightly sweet and salty mix of both of them.  The kiss was languid and loving, but she knew what he needed, what they both did.  She wrapped her legs around his waist, guiding him as he entered her, the heady pressure giving her chills.  She moaned as he glided deeper, taking his time, carefully filling her until she felt complete.  They felt complete.
Robert broke the kiss, peering into her eyes and blinking back the moisture in his own.  The thought of sparking something at the center of her very core was just … like nothing before.  They’d made love hundreds of times, maybe more, but never like this.  He’d always assumed he understood the primal nature of it, but, at that moment, he realized he’d never come close.  It didn’t feel right.  It was right.  He kept his eyes on hers as he began to move, her beautiful, wet heat enveloping him.  Fuck, everything about her was beautiful.  Her face, her hair, the scent of her skin.  She was perfect.  They were perfect.  He picked up his pace, breathing a little heavier, and her mouth dropped open as she closed her eyes.  “No, don’t close your eyes.  I want to see them when you come.”  He pursed his lips, exhaling as he felt the tremor.  “There it is.  Christ, I love you so much.”
Michelle clutched at him, desperate for more as he started to move faster.  She was so close.  Again. God, the things he did to her, the things they did to each other.  He grasped her wrists, pulling her arms above her head, thrusting hard, taking everything she had.  Her breath caught, and she bit her lip as he tossed his head back, pushing gently against her wall.  He swayed his hips back and forth, keeping sweet pressure inside and against the swollen, aching bud between her legs.  Over and over … around and around.  Their eyes stayed locked, neither looking away, not even for an instant.  Then she felt it, something different, something deep.  “Oh, Robert, I, this is, I don’t …”  The words disappeared as he kissed her, tangling his fingers in her hair.  Her whole body tingled, her muscles tensing.  Fuck, she was right on the cusp, of what, she wasn’t sure, but she wanted it, that much she knew.  She began to shudder, emitting something between a moan and a sob as she finally gave in to the mountain of current.  She held him as tightly as she could, tears flooding her eyes as the blessed release ripped through her.
He’d never seen anything like it or felt anything like it, either.  Her body was hot, hotter than it had ever been, and she was clenching him wildly.  He kept her close, pressing right against her wall, exactly where he needed to be.  With a groan, he let go, filling her again and again, as lost in her eyes as she was in his.  He laid his forehead on hers, mesmerized by the power of their connection and the flame that they’d surely ignited.  He didn’t know how long they stayed that way.  Time ceased to matter.
Michelle brought her hands to the sides of his face, her brow lifting as she smiled.  “What was that?”
“I’ve no fucking idea, but, Christ, I adore you.”  Robert collapsed onto his back, drawing her into his chest.  “I’ve never come like that before in my life.  Bloody hell, if that didn’t do the trick then I don’t know what will.”
She ran her fingers through his damp curls, her smile broadening.  “I’m not so sure.”
“You want to have another go at it, then?  Not that I don’t already intend to.”
“It wouldn’t matter.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Robert snipped, frowning.  “How would you bloody know, anyway?”
“A couple of reasons.”  Michelle placed a kiss on the dimple of his chin.  “One, women know these things.”
He rolled his eyes.  “Bollocks.”
“And two, you already have.  Done the trick, that is.”
Robert blinked as the understanding washed over him, for a moment, speechless.  “Christ, almighty, are you saying …”
“Yes, I’m saying.”
He expelled a sharp breath.  “Oh, baby, I don’t, I can’t …”  His hand flew to her tummy.  “What if we did something to hurt it?”
“I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work like that.”
“Bloody hell, woman, when were you going to tell me?”
“I tried to earlier, but, ah, you make the rules in the house, remember?”  She chuckled at the wide, silly grin on his face.  “Are you happy?”
“I’m not happy, Belle, I’m better than that. Fuck, I don’t know what I am,” he whispered, snickering.  “Fucking giddy.”
“Me, too.”
Their eyes met, and Robert cupped her face.  “I love you, Michelle.  And Bella.  And whoever else comes along.”  He traced her bottom lip with his thumb.  “And I will for the rest of my life.”  He folded his arms around her as he lay his head back on the pillow, lost in the rush of a love he never knew existed.

Our Bond is Stronger Than Death: Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Jack settled back in his seat, watching the UN members fight amongst themselves over the proper procedure for assisting a war-torn London now that the uprising had been quelled. They were enraged that Jack had sent agents to interfere, but they couldn’t deny that it was a great help to the citizens. He was only half-listening, letting Ana take notes as his mind wandered to the steady pulse of his connection to Gabriel.
The bond that scientists claimed didn’t exist was stronger than ever. It pulsed warmly between them, a little strained now that Gabriel was away on an unofficial Blackwatch mission. Officially, Jack couldn’t support anything that Blackwatch did, but he had always had Gabriel’s back, had always approved of his machinations even if they were dangerous and, often, completely unethical. They had to be; they were supposed to protect the world from the shadows that threatened to swallow them. Sometimes, you had to put the rules aside to catch the people that were breaking them.
Lately, the splinter faction that was growing inside of Blackwatch was starting to show signs of outside influence. Gabriel had always been aware of them, monitoring them carefully with a few well-placed agents and none too few bugs. He knew they were dangerous and he wasn’t going to let them go unmonitored.
He had decided to make a move, taking his agents with him to investigate the supposed headquarters. It was a fair distance from Zürich, meaning that he had to break his mandatory on-base suspension; it had taken too long to find a good reason for Gabriel and the other Blackwatch agents to be off base at the same time. Jack didn’t doubt Gabriel’s abilities; he just wished that he didn’t have the UN breathing down his neck so that he could go with his bonded.
He stretched the fingers of his right hand, curling them slowly into a fist. “We can provide more than enough medical assistance,” Jack said, interrupting one of the delegates in the middle of their diatribe. “Overwatch is more than just a military organization; it….”
Jack’s body convulsed. He sucked air in through clenched teeth as he dug his fingers into the arm of his chair. He felt his pupils dilate, pulsing in time with the agony shooting up from his groin. He sucked in air, exhaling brokenly as gunshots echoed in his head. He faintly heard the arm of the chair crunch under the force of his hand, but he didn’t care.
Gabriel was in danger. Someone was shooting at him and had managed to land enough shots to send the pain back to Jack. This was the worst case scenario come to life.
He was on his feet in an instant, leaving the meeting without a second thought. He heard Ana shouting after him, demanding to know what was going on. Jack ignored her, sweeping through the base towards his room. He didn’t have time to explain what was going on; he had to get to Gabriel.
“Nox,” he called.
“Is there a problem, Strike Commander?” the base’s AI unit focused on him immediately.
“Are there any missions heading out towards Italy?” he asked. “I need to get to Venice. Immediately.”
“There is a small team heading for Verona, Italy,” Nox replied. “Shall I request additional space made for you?”
“Yes,” Jack said as he stepped into his room. “Make sure that there is an available vehicle waiting at the landing site as well. I can’t waste time.”
“Understood, Strike Commander,” Nox said as he started unfolding Jack’s personal armory out of the wall. “Shall I notify the medical bay to be prepared for an emergency transport?”
“Yes,” Jack said as he stripped out of his Overwatch uniform and slipped into something stealthier, snapping a helmet down over his head. “And to have every medical procedure imaginable ready for immediate use.”
“It will be done,” Nox said as he lifted Jack’s favourite pulse rifle out of its holding in the floor. “Bring him back, Strike Commander.”
Jack didn’t say anything as he headed for the launch deck. Nox would know what to say to keep the UN off of his back. He knew how to go about keeping Ana from throwing a fit. He was more than capable of keeping the worst of his subordinates at bay. It was nice to have someone else watching his back in a time like this. Funny that it was the AI that he trusted above everyone else.
“I’m coming with you,” Genji growled as he materialized out of the shadows.
Jack didn’t flinch. He wasn’t surprised by Genji’s random appearances anymore. If anything, he found them more annoying now. The young man was just a cesspool of emotions and he was going about all the wrong ways to express them. He should have been talking to a registered psychologist and not brooding in the shadows like a vampire ready to bring down swift death on the unawares.
“Gabriel told you to stay behind,” Jack growled as they fell into step with each other.
“You do not command me,” Genji sneered. “I am his weapon, not yours.”
“If you believe that then Angela has failed to repair your brain,” Jack said without breaking stride. “Anything Gabriel owns is mine by default, just as everything in my possession is at his disposal. He told you to stay behind.”
“Because he didn’t trust me!” Genji shouted. “I slaughtered the Shimada clan and he doesn’t think I’m good enough!”
Jack rounded on Genji and loomed over him. Genji faltered for a moment, red eyes going wide, before he straightened his back. Jack would give him credit where it was due; other men had shrank away under Jack’s gaze, preferring to hide than face down the icy ire of the Strike Commander. Genji would learn his place or he would perish. That was how this confrontation would go; there was no room in Jack for mercy at the moment.
“Gabriel told you to stay here so that you could recover,” Jack said. “Killing your own family would leave massive psychological scars. It has nothing to do with whether or not he trusted you.”
“He took…!”
“I know who he took, Genji,” Jack said coldly. “Who do you think he cleared it with?”
“You’ve never taken an interest in Blackwatch before,” Genji hissed. “Why start caring now?”
Jack cocked his head slowly to the side and smiled darkly. “Who do you think gave the order for Blackwatch to retrieve you?” he asked before he turned away. “Stay here, Genji, and make sure the medical bay is ready for whatever I bring back.”
“You say that like you expect to find the Commander dead,” Genji growled.
Jack gave him a look before walking away. He didn’t know what he was going to find when he got to Venice. All he knew was that Gabriel was in trouble and a great deal of pain. He didn’t expect to find his husband alive.
White light burned through Gabriel’s eyelids. He grimaced, turning his head to the side to get the pain to stop. His head was spinning and his limbs were on fire. It was like someone had inserted a white hot poker into his pupils and was turning them slowly.
“Ah, so the mighty Gabriel Reyes has finally awakened,” a voice laughed.
Gabriel knew his limbs were restrained, but that didn’t stop him from flipping off whoever it was that was mocking him. He wasn’t in the mood for stupid people and even less so for the ones responsible for this. He was in pain, he had been betrayed, and he didn’t know what was going to happen to him. Human test subject was probably high on that list because, let’s face it, he didn’t exactly fill his ranks with the most trustworthy and morally upstanding people. That was partially by design and partially because he and Jack didn’t trust these people out in the world without a watchful eye on them.
“So rude,” the voice laughed again before someone tapped on his head with a pencil. “And after all the trouble we went through to bring you back alive.”
Gabriel only offered a small growl in response, refusing to open his eyes. He ached all over and he didn’t want to open his eyes. He wanted to pretend that this was all a bad dream and that he could sink back into oblivion and wake up on the shuttle to Jesse’s snoring.
Oh gods, Jesse. His eyes snapped open and he glared at the man that he had expected to watch his back. Ash smirked, tapping his pencil against Gabriel’s forehead again. Gabriel flexed his arm and pulled upwards, denting the restraint and making it groan in its moorings. Ash’s eyes opened in alarm and he took a step back, staring as the tendons in Gabriel’s wrist and hand bulged with the effort to get free.
Just as Gabriel was seconds from freedom, electricity arced through him. He cried out in surprise, his spine arching off the medical bed as the muscles in his back were involuntarily forced to contract. His vision turned white and he felt the currents in his brain overload like he was having a seizure. He collapsed back against the bed as the current vanished, his breathing heavy as he stared blindly up at the fluorescent lights overhead.
“You were told not to antagonize him,” a new voice snapped. “He is restrained, not incapacitated. You know that, Ashley.”
“I didn’t think he would be able to break the restraints! That’s solid titanium!” Ash replied.
“Gabriel Reyes is capable of inhuman feats; never forget that,” the second voice said. “I shouldn’t have to tell you that. You are part of his most trusted agents; you are privy to information we were not.”
“He didn’t trust me,” Ash sneered. “He kept me close to keep an eye on me. Look where that got him.”
“Where is McCree?” Gabriel managed to growl.
His head was still spinning, but he managed to turn his head to glare at the two Talon agents. The newcomer wasn’t familiar to him, but he was probably from the lower rank of Blackwatch to keep from being too recognizable. Ash sneered at him, but the newcomer shrugged a shoulder.
“Being put to good use,” they said. “You should be more concerned with yourself, Gabriel. But, I suppose that’s what happens when you treat your faction like a family.”
Gabriel took the all too familiar insult and let it roll off of him. It wasn’t anything he hadn’t already heard a thousand times from Ana. They were always so prickly about how he treated his subordinates; only Jack had ever agreed with him about it. But Jack was thousands of miles away; he wouldn’t get to him in time.
There was a pulse next to his heart and he struggled to keep his smile to himself. Jack must have sensed his fear even from the distance they were from each other. The pulse soothed in time with his heartbeat, keeping itself hidden as Jack zeroed in on him, recalculating his route from wherever he was.
‘I’m coming,’ Jack promised, his voice tickling along the underside of Gabriel’s brain. ‘Just hang on.’
‘Hurry,’ Gabriel whispered back. ‘Please.’

BnHA Chapter 240: PLIFF
Previously on BnHA: Shigaraki “Thanos” Tomura gleefully reduced an entire city to dust while laughing maniacally. You know, villain things. He almost turned Re-Destro to dust as well, but Re-Destro got around that by chopping off his own legs. Like it was no big. I still haven’t quite managed to process that yet. Anyway, so everyone was real impressed by Tomura at this point, because how could you not be, and to sum things up, Re-Destro basically accepted him as his lord and savior and handed the Meta Liberation Army over to him. So now Shigaraki Tomura, noted crazy person and heir to All for One’s empire, who has just upgraded his quirk so as to be able to destroy basically anything within an unknown range without even having to touch the thing directly, and who has also pledged to destroy the entire world, has an army. And he also has Gigantomachia, who was watching him all hearts-in-eyes while he did his thing. So all in all this has been a very productive arc for the League of Villains. And meanwhile, the League of Everyone Else may want to think about changing their name to “League of People About To Be Incredibly Fucking Screwed.”
Today on BnHA: The League of Villains, in what is clearly the best rebranding move since New Coke, renames itself the “Paranormal Liberation Front”, a.k.a. PLF, a.k.a. PLIFF because that’s what it instantly became in my head and you can’t stop me. Among PLIFF’s Finest is newly initiated member Hawks, whose mystery bag is finally confirmed to have contained exactly what we all thought it was going to contain. I don’t even want to talk about that. I’m still in denial. But also weirdly thrilled. I’m terrible. Anyway, so Hawks is all “:) we’re fucked,” agreeing with the consensus the general fandom has come to over the past week, and palling around with his new best friend Dabi as he frantically tries to come up with some kind of plan. Maybe the heroes can try rebranding themselves as “the Supernatural Emancipation Cavalry.” That wouldn’t really solve anything, but it’d be funny to watch the villains come to realize they’re being mocked. Sorry but y’all brought this on yourselves.
(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity immediately afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)
so I received an ask from a very kind anon warning me to be careful of spoilers for this chapter. thank you, anon! rest assured that I have been very cautious, and am pleased to inform everyone that I’m diving in spoiler-free this week. so bring on your Kacchan hero names, your Best Jeanist heads, your new Deku quirks, and whatever other twists you want to toss my way, manga. but especially that first one. this arc has been fantastic, but now that it’s wrapping up, I miss my kids and I would like to check in with them soon. they grow up so fast and time is precious
so apparently the title for this chapter is “Power”, which could mean lots of things, but I imagine it’s not something that bodes well for our heroes. honestly does anything bode well for them at this point. they’re not having much luck on the boding front
oh cool, a time jump! so this is apparently now one week after “the deadly battle.” wow, way to sum everything up in the blandest terms possible while still being accurate. like, yeah, that is what it was, but somehow it doesn’t quite communicate the full magnitude of what actually went down, you know?
anyway so the town basically looks like it got hit by a fucking meteor
Tumblr media
new crack theory that a time-traveling Shigaraki Tomura is what actually killed the dinosaurs
wow would you fucking look at this
Tumblr media
I guess this is the BnHA version of “an unfortunate training exercise”
also I like how they didn’t think it would be believable that one sleepy boi could cause all of this destruction, so they amped it up to twenty fucking guys instead. sob. why did they even bother giving Tomura an army. he is an army
lol the bullshit continues
Tumblr media
“reporting to you live from Deika City, an innocent and wholesome country town in no way affiliated with an extreme right-wing quirk supremacist movement, where citizens recently found themselves victims of an entirely unprovoked attack by no fewer than twenty, and definitely more than six, villains. the brave citizens proceeded to fight them off, and definitely killed them all and didn’t surrender to them and elect their leader as their new god. also the president of Detnerat just happened to be there. just coincidentally. he definitely was not the one who instigated the entire thing. when asked for comment, Mr. Yotsubashi responded, quote, ‘nonsense, I’m no hero. would you call a man a hero just because he fought off an army of villains alone and selflessly sacrificed his own legs to ensure that justice prevailed? would you call that heroic? poppycosh. that’s just the kind of man I am. I wouldn’t call myself brave. ‘humble,’ maybe. ‘handsome’, perhaps. but a hero? no. I’m just an everyday, all-around good type of person, that’s all.’ so there you have it. truly a courageous figure. a gallant example of truly stellar fortitude and virtue. we need more Yotsubashi Rikiyas in these trying times. back to you, Jeff”
anyway, so the media in BnHA. fairly gullible, huh?
so now the report is concluding with a statement that the investigation is still ongoing. uh huh. damn they really got away scot-free with all this, huh
and we’re cutting to a close-up of sushi! oh my god. Compress have your dreams finally come true at last
yesssss oh my god. I’m so happy for him
Tumblr media
(ETA: on my second read-through I paid attention to try to see whether or not Compress had finally gotten a new robot arm, but it’s impossible to tell. he’s only using his right hand here, and later on when he goes on stage with the rest of them he’s wearing his usual trenchcoat and gloves. I’m just gonna assume he finally got the upgrade he wanted, though. nice to see you so content, Mister I-Ran-Around-A-Lot.)
excuse me, what, Dabi? he didn’t even do anything?? as opposed to you, who basically just set yourself on fire and glared at Frogurt for half a dozen chapters?? don’t hurt yourself climbing back down from that high horse you punk
lol what
Tumblr media
I don’t even have to scroll down to the rest of this page to immediately know this is some bullshit. she’s not dead. out of everyone in the League she’s probably third most important after Tomura and Mr. You-Didn’t-Even-Do-Anything above. her quirk is too plot-critical for her to actually be dead. you’re not gonna kill off the ONLY GIRL IN THE LEAGUE OF VILLAINS, either. Horikoshi who do you even think you’re fooling
ah, yep
Tumblr media
Togaaaaaaaaa omg. I’d hug you but you’d stab me. but I’m so happy to see you my precious baby girl
and it actually makes sense for Twice to be mourning the clone, though, and I’m glad they showed it. because he of all people understands that the clone is the person to at least some degree. like, it’s nice that he doesn’t just view them as disposable and he respects them. he’s so nice omfg
anyway so it looks like he’s back to being crazy though
Tumblr media
oh well, it was nice while it lasted. at least he doesn’t appear traumatized anymore. and he has a boyfriend now too. where is Giran anyway
now fucking Skeptic is walking in like he’s on the set of a fucking sitcom
Tumblr media
[canned audience laughter]
nice touch on the following page with Hanabata starting to refer to Re-Destro as “The Supreme...” before catching himself and amending it to just “Re-Destro”
oh wow
Tumblr media
damn, LoV, y’all went from poverty straight to the .01%. talk about an upgrade
oh my god there’s a secret passage
Tumblr media
oh my god it leads to a secret basement
Tumblr media
trying not to think about the last time we were in a secret villain basement. this isn’t like that. relax. that arc is over now. deep breaths
holy shit
Tumblr media
this is like the fucking Mines of Moria. complete with a Balrog. jesus christ
omg look who got himself a BRAND NEW SUIT AND TIE ENSEMBLE oh shiiit
Tumblr media
is that a fucking fur-lined coat. Shigaraki Tomura has officially upgraded to KHR Villain status. what a little shit. I adore you, you son of a bitch
and I thought he destroyed all the hands?? come on dude, I know it’s like your signature look, but I was hoping we were going in a different direction from here on out. ah well
wow, Horikoshi
Tumblr media
just once. just once I would like this man to leave a plothole unaddressed for more than one page. god I love this manga
anyway so they’re fully lampshading the fact that this one hand somehow miraculously survived, and they’re all “I guess it’s his trademark, huh?” yep, that’s right. his lewk. now be quiet, you two. which of us is doing the recap here
so now RD is up on stage showing off the weirdest fucking wheelchair I’ve ever seen, and singing Tomura’s praises
Tumblr media
it’s remarkable how quickly his ego adapted to his brand new role as head of Tomura’s PR. he almost seems to be enjoying this more than when he was the leader
oh shit??
Tumblr media
A NEW NAME?? oh my god. edge of my seat. can’t wait. take it away boys
Tumblr media
LOOOOOOOL what
sob this makes it sound like they do ghost investigations. is there a League of Villains Buzzfeed Unsolved AU. this is what happens when you put the otaku in charge of the name
just. why paranormal. they thought it sounded cool?? and am I really supposed to type out PLF and not pronounce it like “pliff” in my head moving forward?? yeah, that’s not happening. you guys are now PLIFF. congratulations
thank god they’ve still got Tomura to lend legitimacy to this whole ridiculous operation. god, there’s something I never thought I’d say. Tomura why are you now the part of the League -- excuse me, PLIFF -- that I actually take the most seriously. god
Tumblr media
y’all heard the man. whatever we want. this is happening. just remember kid, you gave me permission
Tumblr media
holy shit you guys is that motherfucking Carvel!?!? I was staring at the panel all “WHO IS THIS” and wondering if they’d somehow brought Kizuki back to life, oh my god. I’m fucking dying send help. he looks like Galaxy Express 999. my brain is short-circuiting
anyway so everyone is all HOORAY WE LOVE THIS and they’re all cheering
HOMBGLKDF
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DSLFKSHDLGK HEY BOY, HOW ARE YOU LIKING BEING A MEMBER OF THIS NEW HERE VILLAIN CULT. WHERE’S THE FUCKING BAG, HAWKS
SDFKSJDLFKSDLKFH A FLASHBACK AHHHHHH
Tumblr media
I CAN’T TURN THE PAGE OH GOD NO SOMEBODY ELSE DO IT
OH MOTHERFUCKING SHIT
Tumblr media
my jaw just. fucking. -- -----------
okay Hawks. fucking explain. how did you do it. is it a fake?? surely it’s not the real deal?? oh god, the memes have now become terribly real. I have no choice but to embrace this with even more stupid jokes and memes as a coping mechanism or I’m gonna lose it
but for real, they didn’t seriously do my boy Jeanist like that. Paramount Optimal Jeanist did not survive a point-blank attack from motherfucking All For One just to get shanked by Hawks so that he could get good with PLIFF, only to be, and I quote, “too late...!”
(ETA: and on readthrough #2, Dabi does indeed bring up the fact that this might not actually be Jeanist’s corpse. “setting aside the issue of whether he is who you say he is...” so even he acknowledges that shenanigans could be afoot.
but he seems convinced it’s a real body at the very least. though did it never occur to you that he could have just picked it up from the morgue, dude? that’s gonna be my go-to theory for now at any rate.)
is now a good time for me to bring up something I’ve been wondering about for a while, which is how Bakugou is going to take this? yes, Bakugou. “okay makeste, I know he’s your favorite and I know you miss him, but what kind of mental cartwheels are you doing in order to make this situation with Hawks and PLIFF somehow relate to Bakugou Katsuki, whom we last saw twenty fucking chapters ago, and who has absolutely nothing to do with this?”
well I’m glad you asked, and you see, it’s because (a) the internship, and (b) because we already know Katsuki blames himself for at least one hero’s downfall as a result of what happened in Kamino, and I could easily see him having a similar response to Best Jeanist’s injury and subsequent disappearance. like, we already know this shit is all over the news. and Bakugou knows Jeanist personally. and so now what with him being missing, I can’t help but wonder if he’ll blame himself again for being the reason Jeanist was there at Kamino, and lost a lung, and so forth
and I realize this tangent is coming sort of out of left field, but seeing as this arc is finally wrapping up, and we can expect to cut back to the U.A. kids again soon, I just figured I’d bring it up now, because we’ll see if I’m right or not shortly
anyway. so let’s get back on topic. best dead Jeanist. oh god
but it seems like it did, at least, finally convince Dabi of Hawks’s sincere villainous intentions. so we have that one minor win, I guess. congratulations Hawks, now you know about the secret villain basement and their new rebranding. was it worth it you bastard
oh shit. actually, maybe it was. because now he understands just how incredibly screwed they are sob
Tumblr media
so he doesn’t know for sure about the Noumu yet. so Tomura still has that little ace up his sleeve. fucking great
but him knowing about the Detnerat thing is big, though. so now the heroes know not to trust any of their equipment, or any of their lackeys like fucking Slidin’ Go. that’s something, at least
and you gotta love the whole “equal to, if not greater than” bit, sob. never in my life have I ever seen something so egregiously understated. “Shigaraki might be more powerful than the heroes at this point” yeah, you think!? god
holy shit Re-Destro calm the fuck down
Tumblr media
Tomura’s telling him to get lost, and he’s immediately making himself scarce lol. good riddance
and Tomura is now kneeling dramatically and pounding his fist on the floor. okay
hey
Tumblr media
I take offense, sir. “League of Villains” had a timeless air about it. and more importantly, you couldn’t abbreviate it to the sound that someone makes when they plop down tiredly onto a couch
oh shit!!!!
Tumblr media
THIS LAST PAGE HAD BETTER BE A TERRIFYING PANEL OF THE HIGH END NOUMUS, OMG. I’M HOLDING MY BREATH
GODDAMMIT IT’S JUST ANOTHER SEXY CLOSEUP OF TOMURA’S FACE
Tumblr media
I mean, can you actually call it that at this point? can you actually “grant” something to someone if they already have more of it than they know what to do with?
but I mean, we know what he really means though, so fair enough
oh ffs now he’s saying “but first there’s something I’d like you to do for me” oh my god enough with these side quests!
he wants him to transport something, apparently. ARE YOU HATCHING SOME NEW SCHEME oh gosh
oh my god and meanwhile Hotwings is becoming canon right before our eyes holy shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
of course!! he’s fucking thrilled!! everything is just!! so great!! right now!! :)!!!!!
oh my god Hawks
Tumblr media
“Endeavor, and everyone” I see what you did there kid
(ETA: and as far as I recall, Endeavor doesn’t even know about his undercover mission yet. I wonder how he’s going to react when he finds out. your adopted son is now best friends with your presumed-dead son! and in mortal danger omg.)
wow. wow. and that’s the end of the chapter. fucking shit
so! lots to process! Hawks really did it! the absolute madman!! and Dabi fucking loves him now, which is great, if you like things that inevitably end in tragedy. then that’s great for you. but otherwise I guess it’s not so great
so I wonder if our next arc will be the Undercover Hawks Antics arc, or if we’ll be getting back to Deku and the gang. I’m guessing the latter because it’s been a while, but it’s definitely exciting to see this particular plotline finally advancing and becoming more intricate
so basically I have no idea what to expect next week. which is amazing. I’m so fucking excited. now if Horikoshi could just leave us all a little pity disclaimer clarifying that no Jeanists were actually harmed in the making of this chapter and that it was all CGI or some shit, that would be great :/
