Silm reread interlude 2: more Lay of Leithian [canto 4-5]
Canto 4
Again: Beren is sick to upfront pay for the fact of Luthien loving him. Huh. OK.
But we get the beautiful line: "and in his doom was Lúthien snared, the deathless in his dying shared; and Fate them forged a binding chain of living love and mortal pain".
Beren learns new things and gets more elflike, for lack of a better word. Also, they do dance and… if I haven't read LaCE, I might have had some assumptions about what happens here in between the lines. TBH because this is an early text, I'm still not sure how to read it.
Dairon (Daeron) is angry and jealous and curses Doriath with silence. Also, snitches on Lúthien for having a lover (this wors is used in the text, I do not claim that they are lovers in the modern sense, but I don't have a better fitting word for this. "boyfriend" seems too anachronistic and not intense enough.).
Thingol's crown described: it's silver and green. And his people wear armor.
More beautiful lines (similar as in the published Silm): "what I sought not I have found and love it is hath here me bound".
Also, a declaration of how strong the love is, which does our favorite "nor X nor Y" scheme, best known from a certain ill-fated oath: "nor rocks nor steel nor Morgoth's fire nor all the power of Elfinesse shall keep the gem I would posess".
[But Beren doesn't swear to harm anyone, also it's romance not greed so it's not bad. Just sounds cool. TBH I think the nor/nor/nor was a common literary thing in the kind of poetry Tolkien based his writings on. It feels like it.]
Dairon calls Beren "baseborn mortal", which is quite a burn.
The Ring of Barahir is described. Speaking of it, I am really curious what does this design mean and why does this ring look like this, it is really strange tbh.
Melian calls Thingol out on being prideful.
Thingol ignores her and sends Beren on a quest, nicely echoing his words: "A treasure dear I too desire, but rocks and steel and Morgoth's fire from all the powers of Elfinesse do keep the jewel I would posess."
The Sindar laugh at Beren and we get a recap on where the Silmarils came from. Feanor kindled them slow[ly], which is interesting. Oath of [sons of] Feanor mentioned, but by narration, not by characters. Also, it's said to be sworn in mandess.
Beren laughs at the Sindar, bitterly, and agrees to the price and walks away like a boss "he turned, and thrust aside the ring of guards about him, and was gone".
Luthien cries and is afraid. Thingol is certain that Beren will die.
"But Melian smiled, and there was pain as of far knowledge in her eyes; for such is the sorrow of the wise."
Relateable. But, excuse me for correcting the Professof himself, I would kick out the "for", for rhythm and made the last line a new sentence.
Canto 5
Lúthien talks with Melian, we got the most alliterative of lines: "and dare the dread in dungeons dim", I love it!
Dairon snitches at Lúthien again. "Thingol was wroth and yet amazed; in wonder and half fear he gazed on Dairon". I love the description. Again: Thingol is the not best, nor the worst, but definitely the most psychologically realistic, slice-of-life-ish guy in the Silm. And agais: "In angry love and half in fear Thingol took counsuel".
Lúthien is imprisoned in a treehouse: "up she clomb" (it means "climbed"). I love Tolkien's arbitrary past tense forms. She forgives Daeron, because ha makes sad enough songs about it (no, Maglor, a song can work with "sorry I snitched on you", not with "sorry I murdered your family", you need to, idk, stop murdering people is a good start)
Luthien does magic, which has a very fairytale description."'At middle night,' she said, 'in bowl of silver white it must be drawn and brought to me with no word spoken". Also, she gets a spinning-wheel! Daeron doesn't snitch on her anymore, "though his heart feared the dark purpose of her art". Mmm... scary!Lúthien!
She sings magic songs, also we get one of the few Tolkienian examples of one of my favorite things/vibes, which is "darkness but good" (or at least not evil): "another song she sang, of night and darkness without end, and flight and freedom."
Darkness without end, you say? Haven't we, umm, heard this idea somewhere already, Professor? I have thoughts. I do have questions. Sir.
So, on one hand: Feanor with sons goes to chill at the edge of the Void, but after he became, umm, more questionable, "everlasting darkness" is the scariest thing he can think of. Also, here darkness seems to be a good thing. Also, accordint go that one text, early Mannish tales have darkness, or at least "beyond darkness" as clearly positive.
On the other hand (which I do not posess anymore) you have scary darkness-spiders and "Darkness" used as a term for extreme-scary-unknown even in the context of the Valar.
On another hand, you have "darkness" used as symonim for "evil" in narration, I think, even in places where the narrative frame is nonexistent. But let's ignore this a little. :D [Also, "shadow" but it's not the same thing.]
OK, so … I do have thoughts. I should probably pull them into a separate post when/if I figure out what precisely those thoughts are. TLDR something about/around the Gift of Men, but I'm not sure, I can't pinpoint it well yet. Or maybe I can but I'm afraid to. Unclear.
And also also, coming back to the reread, of all the Elves, it is Lúthien who sings of darkness. Hmm.
And for a less interesting, and more lighthearted song, we also get a list of "longest things", including Uinen's hair and my favorite chain, Angainor "that ere Doom for Morgoth shall by Gods be wrought, of steel and tornment". Because of course, as a half-Maia she is allowed to put some foreshadowing in her songs.
BTW what was Tolkien's problem with the 's possesives? I mean, what was the problem of Tolkien with it? :D
We get a really weird poetic choice where two lines end on "dark". Also, Lúthien's hair grows long and pools on the floor (I imagine it roughly like the dress of Morticia Addams)
Short-haired Lúthien! "and cut the hair about her ears, and close she cropped it to her head". And her hair is now darker (less gleaming?) Also, "she wove a web like misty air of moonless night". I absolutely love the mix of "what I am afraid of" (spiders, darkness probably) and "what I am fascinated by" (Edith) that Tolkien does here. But I do have peculiar emotional connections sometimes, I guess it doesn't work well for everyone. But. I love dark!beautiful!spider-ish!Luthien. She needs a fanart.
Also, speaking of fanart, we get a description of her clothing, which is white dress and blue mantle with jewels that look like golden lilies? I think? The language is difficult. OK, sir, we get it, she is as cool as you can write. I am not laugh— no, actually I am laughing a little (yes, yes, the way I described her in the previous paragraph, I know). But ok. And tbh it does make sense with her color palette.
And in the notes we get a suggestion that Thingol couldn't believe that Lúthien actually loved Beren without any weird spells doing that. Which explains a lot of his bahavior tbh, but, Your Highness, maybe you could have asked your Maia wife to have a look at this and tell you if there's some magic going on?
OK, enough for one post.

fic writer questions - thanks for the tags, @grey-gazania @curufiin and @thelordofgifs! Sorry that it took so long.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 51, though one is a compilation of unrelated short pieces.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 89,680
3. What fandoms do you write for? At present just Silm and Lotr, but I'm hoping to participate in Yuletide this year and thinking about The Handmaiden, Hustlers, Swan Lake, and The Wolf Den as potential fandoms to offer
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
spirited away (outsider pov legolas/gimli)
post mortem (clinical/epistolary post-second kinslaying)
it takes a village (5+1 SoF and celebrimbor)
the straight road (epistolary legolas/gimli)
the stones wept (orpheus and eurydice au legolas/gimli)
It seems like my most popular pieces are L/G or sons of Feanor. And they ARE fun to write about, so I'm not complaining!
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes. But sometimes it takes an embarrasingly long time. Because I suck.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? haven (everyone dies) sister sister (everyone dies) if our deed faileth (everyone dies) woe unto worlds end (everyone dies)
Sensing a theme.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? coastin' (Elwing gets her pussy ate by her sexy husband and has an orgasm)
8. Do you get hate on fics? Lol I'm not relevant enough for that.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes lol. I'm not sure what's meant by "what kind", but I've done F/F, M/M, F/M, F/M/M, M/F/F/F/F and a fairly big variety of kinks so like... most kinds?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? No, and I'm not a huge reader of them, although I long for a Silm/Succ crossover
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! The lovely @camille-lachenille translated see it fall, child of war into French. You can read it here.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I write very slowly and erratically, which I don't think would be fair to any potential cowriter.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Legolas/Gimli is a long term otp and one couple where I really can't see either side with anyone else (if they want to invite Aragorn or Eomer to join for a night I'm not opposed). Elwing and Earendil is another couple that I feel the same about (and I'm also defensive of them as a couple and genuinely see them as an example of some of Tolkien's most romantic writing). I also really like Celegorm/Orome for being basically perfect for my id.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Eeeh. I'm really trying not to officially throw in the towel on any of my wips. It's just taking me a long time...
16. What are your writing strengths? Can I say smut? I think I'm quite good at setting, food, and clothing descriptions too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Any plot that's more complicated than "emotion in space" or "dick in hole". Also actually DOING the writing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I used to do it much more than I currently do. Now I feel like it breaks the flow of the story.
19. First fandom you wrote for? LOTR.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? I've said it before but I was really pleased with how one of your girls came out and have reread it a couple of times since publishing. Actually I think I got some writers block after publishing it because I feel like I can't surpass it lol.
This was fun to do! I'm very late to the party so I think most people have been tagged, but if anyone else wants to do it then please go ahead and say I tagged you.

1- It isn't a superficial comparison, it is a textual one, made by the characters themselves.
2- That's valid. The situations are very different. However, and at risk of repeating the points I made in the later post about the theodicean nature of this series of episodes in the Silmarillion and the Adamic/Promethean nature of Feanor as a character, this whole episode serves as an example of how even those who go against Eru/God's will end up inevitably fulfilling Eru/God's plan. Olwe exists, in this moment, as a foil to Feanor, and also as a theodicean example of how obedience to Eru/God does not necessarily protect one from bad things.

Hot take of the day: Quenya is to elves born in the third age what Latin is to people born is 21st century
Which leads to another hot take of the day: elves too have memes about summoning Something Very Finweon while studying quenya
Example N. 1
Elf 1: so how did your weekend go bro?
Elf 2: kind of horrible bro. Practiced quenya for exam, had to convince Feanor I do not posess any silmarills
Elf 1: i guess that's what you get for procrastinating on your exam bro
Example N. 2
Elf 1: so- uhm- did i read that right?
Elrond, staring past him, crying: d- dad???
Example N. 3
Elf 1: *reads a sentence in quenya* did i read that right?
Elrond:
Spirit of Feanor: no <3

Reopening of Requests
As you all are aware, last year I attempted to reopen my requests, however, due to Tumblr's little slip up, it was unsuccessful and I only accepted a handful. Now that my requests are completed, I am pleased to announce the reopening of requests on Sat 25th Feb at 12:00pm, GMT -4.
I have made changes to the process this year due to multiple reasons (I'll try my best to explain them shortly as I go), please read in preparations before requests:
Tumblr media
•⊰ I will only be accepting fics and individual headcanons. This means no group headcanons, I have written so many to the point that I don't get to write for characters individually and fill up their masterlist.
•⊰ No NSFW content for this requesting period, only fluff and angst.
•⊰ The House of Feanor and Lords of Gondolin are not the only characters/groups on my list of characters I write for. It's tiring to write for them back-to-back for every request in large bulks. I write for thirty-six (36) characters, not fifteen (15). Because of the unfairness when it comes to the volume of requests per character, I will be limiting the number of requests.
For the House of Feanor and Lords of Gondolin (Maeglin included) three (3) slots/request per character, ie. two (2) fics and one (1) headcanon or two (2) headcanon and one (1) fic.
For all other characters a maximum of four (4) slots/requests, ie. two (2) fics and two (2) headcanons.
•⊰ Because of this new structure, I am aware that you all will also change the structure of your request in order to have your request accepted, for example: Can I request for Fingolfin, but if not, can I get the request for Turgon? I will accept that format, but a word of advice, I will be selecting requests to fill up the slots so some would be rejected. Don't have popular characters as all your options as the chances of your request being selected will decrease.
•⊰ Also, please do not send me requests in the format: Can I request for Glorfindel, Galdor, Ecthelion, Rog and Maeglin dating human reader but separate headcanons please? Sneaky and smart, but no, I will not accept. One request per character per ask! And I will notice any attempts at requesting headcanons for groups 👁👁.
Tumblr media
Should anything need to be further clarified, please ask and not assume.

Hello, I would very much like to hear about the Oath of Fëanor and efforts to reclaim looted Nazi art.
Ok SO I got a couple asks about this, so I thought I would respond here. Blanket "this is a headcanon and not a formal analysis/don't-@-me statement:" yes, I am Jewish; no, I don't think the retribution against a group of fictional Elves is actually literally comparable to the calculated and cold-blooded genocide of 6 million+ real people; etc etc
But! The reaction to the Feanorians' desire to reclaim the Silmarils and Jewish people's (still-ongoing!!!!) efforts to reclaim art that Nazis stole from us is, in some ways, really similar! Namely in that the response to a profoundly traumatic incident to which the theft was party was, essentially, "Get over it." This was parts of the German and Austrian public reacted to efforts to reclaim art that the Nazis had stolen from Jewish families that had ended up in museums. The legal argument on behalf of these museums was that the art "now belonged to public," which played into antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as greedy, selfish, etc. (even though these were literally family heirlooms that were literally stolen out of people's homes--people who were at best evicted from their own countries and at worst brutally murdered). The film The Woman in Gold (which details efforts to reclaim the stolen painting of the same name) is an accessible and I think pretty strong example of what I'm talking about. The museum that claimed the stolen art did indeed use the argument that it "belonged to the public"--even though 1) the real owner publicly vowed to place it in a gallery of her own choosing (which she did, when she won the case) and 2) perhaps more to the point--the art in question was a commissioned portrait of her aunt that had previously hung in her living room growing up!
And that's...kind of what people (Thingol et al.) expect the Feanorians to do. Not only are the SIlmarils an incredibly personal thing--Feanor claims that he literally poured his Self into them!--but the murder of Finwe was the first homicide in Valinor and an incredibly traumatizing incident. (Not the least for Feanor and his family, in whose house Finwe was residing at the time due to Feanor's banishment.) Maybe it would have been for the public good to essentially donate the Silmarils, as the Valar ask him to after the Darkening. Maybe it wasn't worth it to attack two separate Elven settlements in Beleriand to reclaim a gem stolen twice. It's pretty clear between Feanor and Thingol that the Silmarils have some sort of jealousy-inducing effect, at least on those so disposed. But a thief of an even worse thief does not an owner make, no more for a museum than an Elven prince(ss), and "finders keepers" is not a compelling argument for why stolen art should not be returned to the heirs of the people to whom it belongs. I'm not trying to bash Luthien, or Beren, or Dior, or Elwing, or any others who also claim the Silmarils or defend themselves against attacks by the Feanorians, by the way--but I am trying to explain the parallels I see against the repatriation of stolen Jewish art and the arguments against Feanorian claims to the Silmarils (again, in argument, not necessarily method).
At the end of the day, it's a personal thing for me and not necessarily something that I (as a scholar) expect to stand up to rigorous scholarly scrutiny. But I do think there are some really interesting parallels, and not just for us Feanorian apologists, but for people who really want to seriously explore that the Silmarils mean to the Feanorians.

do you have any source quotes for the length of elf hair?
It is true Tolkien never said all elves have long hair, but here I will present evidence from Tolkien’s writings for individuals (mostly males) and groups of elves (such as the Noldor) having long hair. Also of note, for those saying elves with long hair (and pointy-ears) are an invention of Peter Jackson for the LotR trilogy, there are many drawings of Tolkien’s works depicting elves with long hair, including artwork done by Alan Lee before the trilogy’s release (Lee also worked on the concept art for both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies), so it was a common interpretation of Tolkien’s work. Also on that note, Tolkien also illustrated Beleg, and as you can see, the elf has long (past shoulder-length) hair.
This is not an exhaustive list, but just the first examples that came to mind:
[1] “Ingwë had curling golden hair. Finwë (and Míriel) had long dark hair, so had Fëanor and all the Noldor, save by intermarriage which did not often take place between clans, except among the chieftains, and then only after settlement in Aman. Only Finwë’s second son by Indis had fair hair, and this remained generally characteristic of his descendants, notably Finrod. Elwë and Olwë had very pale hair, almost white. Melian was dark, and so was Lúthien” (Hair, The Nature of Middle-Earth).
[2] “In the case of Fingon it was suitable; he wore his long dark hair in great plaits braided with gold” (The Shibboleth of Feanor, The History of Middle Earth vol. 12).
[3] “The hair of Olwe was long and white, and his eyes were blue; but the hair of Elwe was grey as silver, and his eyes were as stars; he was the tallest of all the Elven-folk” (Of the Coming of the Elves, The History of Middle Earth vol. 10).
[4] Of Glorfindel: “The rider’s cloak streamed behind him, and his hood was thrown back; his golden hair flowed shimmering in the wind of his speed. To Frodo it appeared that a white light was shining through the form and raiment of the rider, as if through a thin veil” (The Lord of the Rings).
A prime example of an elf within the Rings of Power who should have long and dark hair is Celebrimbor as he is a member of the Noldor, and Fëanor’s grandson, and per Tolkien “Finwë (and Míriel) had long dark hair, so had Fëanor and all the Noldor.” Other elves’ hair length, such as Elrond, is more debatable, but over almost 70 years, we’ve consistently seen Tolkien elves depicted with long hair across a variety of media, so the disappointment in the design of the elves in the Rings of Power is not unwarranted, especially considering the quality of the short-haired wigs we’ve seen and the budget of the show.

My thoughts about the words of Maedhros before he and Maglor make that last attempt to steal a Silmaril- "But how shall our voices reach to Illúvatar beyond the Circles of the World? And by Illúvatar we swore in our madness(...)Who shall then release us?":
It's just, idk what word to use, really tragic, or maybe just plain sad that they miss like not one but two things that would completely counter that argument.
Because: 1) I can't believe they never learnt that Manwë for example had "spoken" with Eru since coming into Ëa
And 2) Does it not occur to you that if you can't ask for that oath to be cancelled because of that then you weren't actually able to make it in the first place?!!!
Tbc, I don't think Maedhros is actually right that his voice could never reach Eru.
And I do not think anyone was actually enforcing the oath of Feanor (in the moral sense. I'm not completely sure whether I headcanon it was never really important or whether the "laws of nature" in Arda make it that they kinda "wrote it as their fate to do what they vowed", so it was literally impossible to break - but it would have been cancellable if they wished to/or maybe it would have made them insane to break it - but I want my Third-Age Maglor lucid so here's a problem with that theory. But certainly they weren't going to be damned for not going through with their attempts to reclaim the Silmarils.

Monday Mentions for @fellowshipofthefics
1. What is your favorite type of scene to write?
I love writing arguments, emotionally devastating scenes and twist endings. But often, it’s not about what type of scene it is, it’s about how well it’s coming together.
2. Does writing have a positive impact on your mental health/overall mood?
Definitely, that’s mostly why I write. Except for the times when I want to write but can’t. Then it has a negative impact on my mood :D Also, the times when I feel crappy about my writing, though I’m working on not whining too much about it. Usually, when I’m feeling particularly crappy about my writing, I’m feeling crappy in general.
3. Are you more of an outline person or fly by the seat of your pants?
I used to be a fly the seats of my pants person, but I’ve noticed that I’m slowly becoming an outline person.
4. Who/what gave you the push to become a fanfic writer?
I always liked writing. When I discovered that fanfic exists, my first thought was why, then I read some and thought why not.
5․ Is there a WIP/PB that you’ve had to complete nix and why?
Many! Some of them I still hope to write someday, but there are others that I definitely won’t. For example, my Silm and Supernatural crossover :D I’ve talked about it before, I think. It started great but went nowhere.
Now sharing three fics of mine:
Where the Shadows Are
A dark tale about Gil-galad’s origins.
Battles Unfought, Battles Lost
Maedhros, Fingolfin and Fingon debate the possibility of attacking Angband.
Happy Ending
What could have happened if Fingon did what Maedhros asked on the mountain? (This isn’t a very honest summary.)
I’ll cheat a bit and rec also my gift for the Tolkien Remix event.
the world to come
Feanor lives in Arda Unmarred and misses something or someone he doesn’t remember. Incredibly well-written. It’s definitely 100% recommended!

Tolkien Elves Clothing Headcannons
Please read: These are only my headcanons, meaning my ideas and interpretations of what Tolkien's elves would have worn based on the text, my clothing knowledge, and imagination. I am in no way claiming this is how it should be. Also I own none of the photos used in this post.
Also this is obnoxiously long and wordy, so if you skip to a section that interests you, I won't judge. I may have went ( A lot ) over bored ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Also I just want to say thank you so much for all the support I got on the post asking if I should do this, I hope it lives up to everyones expectations.
Tumblr media
Sources
Okay so in going on this journey of research, I ran into an issue. What culture or cultures to base the clothes off of. My first thought was to have each elven group take ideas from different human cultures. Which makes sense to an extent.
I feel elves would all dress more similar than different across Tolkien’s universe. My reason for this is all the elves started out in the same place (the awakening) and were all exposed to the same things. I believe their clothing would be strongly influenced by the Valar due to Orome’s influence in the beginning and since elves are immortal this influence would not die out as generations go on (I talk about this in the trends section of this post).
If you look in human societies throughout history, they are often unified culturally, despite being far apart, by a religion and I'm applying this to elves. They would emulate the Valar’s clothing in my mind.
Okay now that I narrowed down that I want to use one culture mostly, what culture to pick? There honestly is no right answer to this I feel, but i'm going with European influence (Which is super general I know) since that is where the concept of elves originates from and Tolkien was English. Elves started making their way into stories and poetry in around the 1500s, so that gives me a general area and date to start forming my headcanon. I'm also going to take quite a lot of liberties and take influence from the Lord of the rings films, and general fantasy aesthetics as well to form these headcanons.
Fabrics
Tumblr media
When talking about clothes the first place to start is what they are made of: the fabric. What kind of fabric would the elves use and have available to them. When coming up with this I considered two main things, One how durable the fabric is and two could elves make it.
I think durability would be extremely important to elves. According to the International textile association, the average regularly worn garment will last two to three years. Imagine how short of a time period that is to elves! This is why I believe durability would be extremely important to elves, they want something to last. especially the less wealthy elves because they can not afford constant new clothing.
I am only going to list clothing I think the elves could realistically make, so no polyester, plastic and chemical based fabrics.
Considering these two things I have come up with this list using this website as reference.
Canvas
Cashmere
Chenille
Chiffon
Cotton
Georgette (Silk variety)
jersey (Silk and cotton variety)
Leather and Animal Skins/furs
Wool (And all its woven variants)
Muslin
Lace
Satin
Silk (And all its differently woven Variants)
Taffeta
Velvet
Silhouette
Tumblr media
Note: We are looking at shape/Silhouette in this section, don't mind the colors or fabrics in my reference photos.
So if you study fashion history and culture at all you know the silhouette is one of the defining things of a culture and era. This brings on the question of what the Silhouette for elves would be. I think elves would share one general silhouette with similarities between the male and female silhouettes but have differences as well. This also applies to elves of different lands. They may have the same general silhouette with slightly different things.
For Elleths
For the common elleth silhouette I am going to say one thing SLEEVES. This is taking inspiration from both the LOTR movie and 1500s european paintings and fashion. long graceful sleeves is something I think would be an elven stable on formal/evening gowns. I feel there would be different styles of sleeves however the most common would be something like this. However I will say for casual work wear they would yield unhelpful.
Another thing I feel most elleth dresses would have is a waist seam. This is one thing I strongly dislike about the LOTR movie dress, a majority of the dresses at their base looks like a modern slip dress or a night gown and im not a fan. I understand this was probably a stylistic choice to represent how refined and ellagent the elves were, but to me it just looks like an ill fitted fast fashion nightgown. Here is a link to a good example photo if you want to look. Almost no dresses until the last hundred years lacked a waist seam like this. Some cultures don't have a waist seam in woman clothing but will almost always have a belt like garnet if there is no seam. And I personally think waist seemed gowns, look far more elegant. Plus 1500s european gowns all had waist seams so we are adding a waist seam.
Now the skirt, I feel it would be simple and more on the flat flowing side. No hoop skirts or bum roles for the elves. I do think in some gowns they may add some under lawyers to add volume and or warmth.
For Ellons
I actually really like the LOTR movies interruption of elven male robes for formal situations, Here is an example. I also think similar styles but shorter would be worn by either younger ellons or ellons wanting to branch out in a different style for a formal occasion. Here is an example.
For General Elves
I feel something both genders would share in their formal and non formal clothes is the use of capes in very versatile ways. The cape could have a function like keeping one warm, or just be purely for show and drastic flare as one descends from their throne *cough* Thranduil, Feanor *Cough*. Here are some examples: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.
Now onto the talk of practical clothing. No matter how graceful elves are they can not wear gowns and robes when training or horse back riding. I imagine simple slacks and tunics would be a common site among elves who do physical activities. What Legolas wears in the lord of the rings, is perfect I feel. Practical and rather similar to what humans wear. Here is the example.

I feel the elves would have clothing of all colors overall. depending on a couple things. Elves' clothing colors would be different depending on the environment and what dyes they have available in it. As well as what colors function best in an environment, so a lot of greens.
I don't think elven royals would enforce any laws that limits what colors an elf can wear depending on class like most royals throughout human history have. I do feel that certain elven houses, or elves would take on certain color themes. For example I believe Feanor and his house would wear a whole lot of reds, and blacks. While Finarfin and his house would be wearing more blues, whites and silver.
I think plant based dyes would be the most common among elves, making their clothing fall more on earthy toned down colors, opposed to bright synthetic ones we are used to (See mood board above). I do think some brighter colors could be achieved by dying a garment multiple times or using a rarer material like minerals. However I feel majorly would be as I said earthy and natural.
Embellishments
Tumblr media
I believe elves would dabble in all forms of embellishments on their clothing, I mean they have so much time on their hands so why not? I think embroidery would probably be the most common, Little swirled designs on hems and such. Bead work probably would be reserved for more formal garments, due to it being done with crystals and gems and taking lots of time.
I think what designs elves created would mostly be inspired by nature. Different flowers, birds, and stars being the most common.
I think some elven royals would have robes glistened with sewed on diamonds and jewels, to draw attention to themselves and show status.
Environments
Tumblr media
(Note: The way I arranged this mood board above is by environment. So Beach/tropical first row, Temperate forest middle, and snowy cold place third row.)
I feel the main thing that will be changing between different environments and temperatures is what materials they use. Fur and wool lined cloaks and robes for cold places. Light breathable fabric, decorated with sea shells for tropical beach environments. And cotton and medium warmth clothing for forests. I also feel for hunting clothing elves in forests would wear green, and in snowy areas would wear white furs.
I believe elves would still maintain the same general silhouette in different areas (Go to the Silhouette section for more details) just adding on layers and warmer fabrics in colder places.
Trends
So this section does not get a mood bored because I could not think of what that would be.
Trends are something extremely prevalent throughout human culture, often decided by those in power: Celebrities nowadays and in the past royalty. I don't think elves would have trends like we do, for two main reasons.
Reason one is as I said, trends in the past were decided by royals and oftentimes when a new royal took throne fashions would change in their image. However elven rulers don't die of old age like humans, they live forever. making the constant change of trends not occur with each new ruler because there is not a new ruler often. When there is a new ruler it is most likely extremely tragic because that means the past ruler died, and the next  (Most likely a child of the old ruler ) would probably not want to cause a drastic change in clothing out of respect.
Reason two being age groups. Trends often times change as new age groups move into the prime of their life and old generations die out. However elves are immortal and don't die out. I have no doubt younger elves would dress somewhat differently but there would be no massive clothing changes, In silhouette or fabrics due to the older elves pushing back against it. As well as the elves wanting to continue emulating the Valar.
Everyone who asked to be tagged and I want to show this too: @psychostatic, @deep-space-elf, @bitter-sweet-farmgirl, @tiefliing, @animallover81, @softnessfrommyheart, @xmarchwarden-of-lothlorienx, @hardinginhightowns, @xirinofarvada, @gossip-girl-of-middle-earth, @brannonlasgalen, @most-random-blog-with-stuff, @aduialel, @a-dragon-under-the-stars, @proffyaffle, @estel-means-hope, @eldritch-gilthoniel, @tsuyu-sama, @lady-of-black-roses, @perhaps-iwilltry, @lady-latte, @allinwonderlands , @saviorsong, @entishramblings, @rowandor, @halfwaytheremama, @tran-khuetu, @tolkien-fantasy

Your post about elves with actually metalic hair lives in my head rent-free, so please imagine: the absolutely buckwild hairdos that become possible if you hair is, for example, gold or silver or copper wire.
Oh man you got me started so!!! Let's do this:
1. Imagine that you're mourning the darkening of Valinor and decide to go full fucking balls to the wall for the 100 year anniversary and literally make an entire tree out of your hair. Yes. It takes a month and three elves to do it properly, but it eventually works.
Tumblr media
2. Nerdanel does her hair into beautiful sculptures of her sons after they turn out to by, yk, war criminals. People end up judging her mood by which face she makes that day- Curufin is for when she's feeling grieved; Maedhros for when she's feeling angry; Celegorm for when she's feeling haunted; Caranthir for when she's feeling lonely; Maglor for when she's feeling exhausted. She never does the twins. (Everyone else thinks she never does Feanor, but Nerdanel does: he just looks so similar to Curufin that nobody realizes. Those days are... the best days, really, but Nerdanel never tells anyone.)
3. Gives a new light to Galadriel giving her hair away to Gimli, doesn't it? Wires!!! It's a weapon- wire that can cut someone's throat, maybe, or work away at hinges, or bind something important together. BUT even more importantly: Galadriel's hair has both lights of the Trees- and suddenly that shining is even weirder, is even more precious, is even more ethereal. She's the only living person that combines the Light of the Trees. No wonder Feanor was obsessed. (Imagine, if you will, that you have been working your entire life towards inventing a cure for cancer, only to find out that your niece (of the estranged brother you really hate because he's TOTALLY that surfer bro that has, like, zero responsibilities) has that exact protein expressed in her fingernails. So you ask for a nail. One nail. Come on. From there all you have to do is back-engineer the protein and VOI-fucking-LA a CURE FOR CANCER!!! But she says no. And you ask again, and she says no again, and you're treated like a creep for asking, and you just- fucking- hate- teenage- girls. Anyways, that's basically Feanor @ Galadriel.)
4. Imagine the elves using their hair as last ditch weapons: a Feanorian general at the Dagor-nuin-Giliath, bloodied, screaming, uses one strand of her hair as a garrotte. A Silvan elf, chased for leagues and leagues by a ruthless pack of orcs, runs out of arrows; in response, he cuts off his hair and twists three strands each into forming a blade and then a shaft, and that's how fifteen orcs died in Arvernien during the Dagor Bragollach. A Sindar elf that braids poison into her hair so she can camouflage as a bush when she needs to, but can kill any warg that comes too close.
5. Morgoth shaves Maedhros upon capture, not because he wants to shame him- though he does- but because he doesn't want Maedhros to cut his own throat open, and Maedhros TOTALLY would. When Maedhros hangs on Thangorodrim, the hair starts to grow back, gently edged, blades like a kiss: and he begs for it to slit his throat, begs Manwe for a wind sharp enough to cut him open. It never comes.

Tbh the whole most beautiful thing trips me. I can accept Fëanor being the most beautiful of the men, and Luthien of the women, but what about Finrod. Isn't he also meant to be the most beautiful male elf? Galadriel is called the most beautiful woman of the house of Finwë, and sometimes of the Noldor, but is she more or less pretty than Arwen, who looks like a carbon copy of Luthien. What about all the other elves meant to be super pretty (Maedhros, Celegorm, Dior etc).
Side note, this is why staggering the elves ages in casting annoys me. They should all be in the ephemeral, sexy age range of late twenties/early thirties, and I frankly think it is better and more in line with the subtly eldritch feel of the elves, if parents look the same age as their children.
agreed. Choosing actors who appear visibly aged does take away from the 'otherness' of elves, the lack of visible aging between different generations is part of what makes them look visually off to us-- if the actors can actually act. The age people take you for is really based more on behaviour than looks alone. Some behaviours just 'seem' young/immature to others-- high energy levels and impulsivity, for example.
Good actors should probably be able to portray generational differences between elves through behaviour. But...oh well.
Okay anon, what we need is some sort of published Silm beauty ranking... I got started with some quotes:
....
1. So far I got Finarfin "fairest and most wise of heart" of Finwe’s children-- could this be about his personality? He seems like he'd try to be fair to people-- he's also literally the fairest. As in, he's the one blond. So I'm willing to discount the beauty meaning of fair-- if only because anyway he’s defeated by
2. - his own son; "King Finrod Felagund, fairest and most beloved of the house of Finwë" .... well. Maybe it's fair in the blond sense again, or he's talking about being fair to people? Both of these are published Silm btw. We also get 'Finrod Finarfin’s son, fairest of all the princes of the Elves,' -- so maybe he's just... the blondest and prettiest prince of his generation
3. Dior 'now he appeared as the fairest of all the children of the world' now here it is clearly talking about appearance, BUT this is notably only after he starts wearing Nauglamir. I'm disqualifying him. I bet I'd level up if I wore a silmaril on nauglamir too.
4. Galadriel 'fairest of all the Elves that remained in Middle-earth.' (in third age) OOF to all other elves; though Arwen and Elrond are peredhel and so not involved in this comparison. Also 'Galadriel, most beautiful of all the house of Finwë' here we get the word beautiful, rather than fair; less ambiguous. Though it conflicts directly with.
5. For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind, in valour, in endurance, in beauty
6 and Luthien is of course called the most beautiful of all living things.
7. Maedhros is "of beautiful bodily form" with unusual hair, and tall, but not 'the most __' anything afaik
8. Celegorm is fair but not fairest. Also given his old english name I'm going to go with it just referring to his haircolour.
My conclusion so far is - I'm willing to go with 'fairest' being a description of personality for Finrod and Finarfin because it's both in the context of 'fair and wise' 'fair and beloved.'
Could it perhaps be that beauty is perhaps... subjective in the end? no! Surely this is propaganda (your pick which one/all of them) ;)
- Galadriel is definitely the hottest woman out of the Finweans and no. 1 Hot Elf of any gender once prettier people leave/die
- Fëanor is the hottest man, doesn't need Silmaril + Nauglamir enhancement. But who's more beautiful, Fëanor or Galadriel?! This is inconsistent... Feanor is just called the most beautiful in general anyway, not of the house of Finwe-- but if Galadriel is already the most beautiful of the house of-- agh!

I wanna request headcanon with sons of feanor finding out reader has a beast companion like a pegasus, griffin, hellhound or any other mythical creature.
Tumblr media
FEANORIANS WITH A S/O THAT HAS A MYTHICAL COMPANION
Hi! This is a request, I got all this from my imagination sooo I hope you like it! 💖
Tumblr media
❣️Maedhros
Maedhros will be amazed with your mythical companion, at first he will think his eyes are betraying him but... no it’s real
He will be astonished so you will need to talk to him and calm him down, but it won’t take too much time to do that, his trance will pass quickly
He will ask you if he can touch or pet your companion cause he actually wants to  touch them and perhaps see if they are real, but even though you will need to guide his hand to touch the creature cause he is still a bit nervous
It takes him like 2 weeks to get adapted to your companion but when he gets comfortable with your companion, both of them will share a great bond
Maedhros specially like to spend time with you and your creature cause he never gets tired to see how unrealistic everything seems
❣️Maglor
Maglor is the softest of his brothers but if he suddenly sees your mythical companion and you are not there he will get scared, and if the creature looks ferocious he will be trembling
But he once listened to stories of how beasts were calmed with music so he will begin to sing to your creature, and when Maglor realize it’s not an actual threat he will get closer to your magical companion
You will find both your companion and Maglor and he will be actually petting the creature and singing a beautiful melody, no one can’t resist Maglor’s voice not even your companion
I am sure he will ask some questions later but not so many
Maglor’s singing has turned to your creature’s favorite so every time he sings your ethereal companion will get near him
❣️Celegorm
Out of his 7 brothers Celegorm will be the most excited and happy of them since he loves animals and forest creatures
He has a gigantic dog so I think that also counts also as a mythical or at least “non common” creature
Celegorm will be enchanted and he will not ask so many questions at all, he might only ask your creature’s name and what species is your creature
If Celegorm gets the chance he WILL introduce Huan to your companion, and it will be really cute to watch Huan and your creature interact together
Celegorm love to take the 4 of you to the woods to explore cause he loves the idea of you having a mythical creature as your friend
❣️Caranthir
Caranthir will be astonished, he is quite opposite of his brother Celegorm and he will actually feel like in a dream when he sees your companion
Expect him to ask a lot of questions and not only the basic things, you will have to calm him down for sure, but he will not be angry or anything with you, he is just surprised
It takes some time from him to open up to your companion but when he actually opens up it’s actually a great moment to presence
You will find Caranthir placing a gentle hand on your magical companion’s head  and both of them looking directly into their eyes, you can see they both have just started to bond with each other
Sometimes you can notice Caranthir’s mood changes when your companion is near, he seems happier
❣️Curufin
The perfect word to describe Curufin in this moment is “Surprised”, not scared nor amazed just surprised
He is SURPRISED because he SURPRISINGLY found a magical creature WITH YOU
At first he will be hesitant to get near but when he does it’s because you assured him anything bad is going to happen, he trusts deeply in your words
After sometime Curufin will be very happy about your companion and he will express it in different ways, for example he will offer to take charge of your creature when you can’t
Curufin will also order lots of food for your creature and if he can he will craft something for them
❣️Amras
Amras is amazed by your mythical creature, I mean, not every day you see one of them
Like his brother Celegorm he does like hunting and animals so he will be amazed to know you actually have a mythical creature as your companion, he thinks it’s actually really amazing you have one
One of the things he’ll ask you is if he can take both to the forest to hunt, even if your animal isn’t ferocious, he just wants to have the experience
Amras will not ask too much questions at all but he will ask you if you need help on taking care of your creature, because he is willing to help
Amras and your companion will develop a bond during time, and it will grow with each experience they have together
❣️Amrod
Amrod like his twin will be amazed, he will wonder if he is actually seeing a mythical creature or if he is dreaming
Amrod would ask you a lot of questions not because he is scared of your creature but because he is really intrigued by it and he is curious about it
You’ll often catch him looking to your creature, and sometimes with a notebook in his hands, he will take notes cause he wants to know everything about your mythical companion
He thinks it’s wonderful to spend time with you both and will often put his duties away so he can enjoy his time with both of you
Amrod will much likely even write a whole book about an investigation of your creature cause he is very interested in them

💕 get to know your mutuals!! when you get this, it means someone wants to know more about you, so list 5 things about yourself you want your followers to know. they can be as simple as your age or as complex as your deepest fear, as long as it’s something you’re comfortable with sharing. when you’re done, send this to 10 people you want to get to know better!! 🥺🌼💕
Oh thank you!!
1) I am tiny. Really, really short. Think shorter and then think again. Once I shrink with age my girlfriend gleefully informs me I will be legally able to be classified as a dwarf. BUT I also have a very big legs and huge shoulders which means I wear oversized everything, because nothing that fits my waist or height actually fits me. Ever. So I embrace the oversized look with big boots and big jumpers.
2) I am a huge fantasy fan, specifically Tolkien, but my current favourite genre of books aside from a lot of wuxia that I have been reading is the new weird. Those monsters knitting across the sky are really...wow. I'm interested in how manipulating sentence structure can be used to create a sense of unease and wrongness: so putting an adverb in a place where it wouldn't otherwise be, ordering adjectives unnaturally, pairing two words together that really don't work but that you don't notice until you go back and check, unsure...there's a lot of space between 'grammatically incorrect' and 'natural' and I love books that deliberately manipulate that space. Similarly the use of physical landscape etc that is just...wrong.
3) I'm an introvert with very extroverted hobbies: I love to be looked at, and I love to dance! My dream is to learn circus or burlesque. I am constantly bobbing around and at parties will be the first person to get up completely sober and dance with abandon on a table. I'm an adrenaline junkie. I love high spaces and stupid risks and I am very childish and impulsive at times. I love cliff-climbing and balancing on thin railings and hanging off things. I love being the centre of attention and am a very good public speaker and performer, but hate actual contact with people, and have the social grace of a walrus: let me bow and wink and immediately go home please. And then after that I will stare at the wall with drained social battery for like two days.
4) I went through a period of three-four years of mental health problems. I'm doing a lot better now, and am naturally very optimistic when not under The Big Sad, and want to say that there is another side to this. I still have a disaster life, but it's more of a WHELP ANOTHER MISSED APPOINTMENT AAHSFJHAKFHJA HILARIOUS OH GOD than not wanting to leave bed. Things will change. I never thought it would get better, I genuinely thought it would be like this forever, but it has. And especially for people struggling with things that don't get talked about much in mental health circles like dissociation or derealisation, you're not a freak, and things will likely change.
5) I don't talk about this enough, but the love of my life - what got me through my teenage years - was German. I love the German language so much. I'm no longer actively learning it and my active abilities have decreased, but I just want some love for this language in the langblr community ok...
So here is some examples of just two beautiful texts I love in German:
- Kassandra by Christa Wolf:
Wann der Krieg beginnt, das kann man wissen, aber wann beginnt der Vorkrieg. Falls es da Regeln gäbe, müsste man sie weitersagen. In Ton, in Stein eingraben, überliefern. Was stünde da.
- Elisabeth the musical:
Kitsch!
(everybody should watch Elisabeth, it's amazing...!!!)
- Also, not originally German, but I love every translation of Tolkien's work in German?? it's so so good, it works so well, and the word order choices work so well in German, much better than any non-V2 languages.
Oh my god every single sentence in this makes me just INSANE. Basically everyone should also learn German. Even thinking about it now makes me shiver and want to continue....ahhhhhhhhhhh. ARGHHHHHH.
