Guide to Eyelid Surgery Cost and Procedure
Blepharoplasty surgery, also known as eyelid surgery, is a type of plastic surgery which removes wrinkles and puffy eyes and aesthetically enhances the eyes. In this article, we will guide you through the process and cost of surgery.
What Is Blepharoplasty?
The eyelid surgery is the type of medical procedure performed on the eyelids. This medical procedure removes the excessive skin from the upper eyelids and reduces the bagginess from the lower eyelids. This medical procedure is also called an eye lift.
This medical procedure is primarily done for cosmetic reasons. It is also an efficient method of improving eyesight in older people whose saggy upper eyelids hinder their vision.
Although the eyelift will not eliminate dark circles or other facial wrinkles, it is generally done with other processes, such as forehead lifts, laser resurfacing, and filler injections.
Who Should Get Eyelid Surgery?
People who should invest in blepharoplasty cost in India are in good health and have a realistic idea of their needs. People aged 30 or above who have baggy eyelids can opt for the surgery.
Eyelid surgery will enhance the look and build confidence. However, it may also cause in the ideal look or alter the structure of your face. Before deciding on the eyelid lift, consult the best doctor and discuss your goals with them.
Cost Of Eyelid Surgery
The average cost of blepharoplasty can range from Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 2,00,000.
Process Of Blepharoplasty
The eyelid surgery in India takes about 2 hours if both lower and upper eyelids are done together. Doctors may use local anaesthesia with oral sedation. If you get the surgery at a hospital or the surgical centre, you will most likely get an IV sedation.
If you are getting all four eyelids done, the surgeon will first start from the upper lids. The surgeon will then usually cut along the natural lines of the eyelids. Through these cuts, the cosmetic surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying tissues while removing the excess skin and fat.
After that, the surgeon will close the cuts with small stitches. The stitches in the upper lids will stay for about a week. The lower lids may not need stitches which depends on the technique used.
Surgery on the lower eyelids can be done with varying techniques. In one technique, the eyelid surgery Mumbai expert will go inside the lower eyelid to remove extra fat. That cut will not be visible. The surgeon will then soften the lines in the skin with the help of an erbium laser or CO2.
Another method consists of cutting the eyelash margin. The surgeon will remove the excess skin, fat, and loose muscle through the cut. The cut line will fade away after a short time.
Once the surgery is done, your doctor will put ointment in the eyes to keep them moist and cover them with cold compresses while you recover. After the surgery, you may have blurry vision due to the ointment or light sensitivity.
Conclusion
It is one of the safest forms of surgery you can opt for, and it will not affect your day-to-day life since the recovery period is lesser than other surgeries like a facelift.
Dr. Mohan Thomas Aesthetics provides the best and lowest eyelid surgery cost.

Exploring Different Types of Eyelid Surgery in Singapore
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure aimed at enhancing the appearance of the eyelids. In Singapore, a country renowned for its advanced medical facilities, various types of eyelid surgery are performed by different plastic surgery clinics to address specific concerns and achieve desired outcomes. This article delves into the different types of eyelid surgery available in Singapore, providing valuable insights for those considering this transformative procedure.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery focuses on rejuvenating the upper eyelids by removing excess skin and fat, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance. This procedure not only enhances aesthetics but also improves vision obstructed by drooping eyelids. In Singapore, highly skilled plastic surgeons employ advanced techniques such as the incisional or non-incisional method to tailor the procedure to each patient's needs.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery targets concerns such as under-eye bags, puffiness, and wrinkles. By carefully removing or repositioning excess fat or tissue, this procedure can create a smoother, more rejuvenated lower eyelid contour. In Singapore, experienced surgeons employ innovative techniques like transconjunctival blepharoplasty or the traditional incision method to restore youthfulness and improve facial harmony.
Double Eyelid Surgery
Double eyelid surgery in Singapore, also known as Asian blepharoplasty, is highly sought after in Singapore, reflecting cultural preferences for a defined upper eyelid crease. This procedure involves creating or enhancing the double eyelid fold to accentuate the eyes' beauty and create a brighter, more expressive appearance. Skilled surgeons in Singapore offer several techniques, including the incisional or non-incisional method, to meet individual patient preferences.
Canthoplasty
Canthoplasty is a specialized eyelid surgery that focuses on correcting eyelid laxity or malposition. This procedure involves modifying the outer corner of the eyes to achieve a more desirable shape and position. In Singapore, canthoplasty is performed by experienced plastic surgeons who meticulously tailor the technique to each patient's specific needs, ensuring optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Combined Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery
For individuals desiring comprehensive rejuvenation of the entire eye area, combined upper and lower eyelid surgery offers a holistic approach. This procedure addresses both the upper and lower eyelids, effectively reducing sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles for a more harmonious and youthful appearance. In Singapore, skilled surgeons perform this comprehensive surgery with precision, ensuring natural-looking results and minimizing downtime.
Take-away
As demand for eyelid surgery continues to rise in Singapore, it is important for individuals considering such procedures to be aware of the different types available. Whether it be upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, double eyelid surgery, canthoplasty, or a combination thereof, Singapore offers a wealth of talent and expertise within its medical community. To achieve optimal outcomes, it is crucial to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon who can tailor the procedure to your unique needs, ensuring safe and satisfying results.

The Making of: Life-Size Malworm Plush
(Wormton AU)
STATS
16 ft 3 in (495 cm) long
Total time: 150 hours
Material Cost: $124
Theoretical minimum cost (based on seamstress wage): $2,524
(Progress photos and commentary below)
I'll be referring to my life-size wormton plush as "malworm" for convenience sake.
Tumblr media
Unlike my Spamton NEO, Caine, and Fake Peppino plushies, I didn't spend a lot of time on concept art. Since I planned to make the malworm plush as close as possible to its 2D design, I didn't have to add much stylization, other than simplifying some details (no way in hell was I going to make 104 separate embroidered stitches for the segments of his toes, sorry). I mainly used the planning stage to calculate how wide the body pieces needed to be, plotting it out in 1/4 in : 3 in scale and using circumference formula to find the values I needed. I planned to make it around 10 feet long, the length of a young adult malworm. A lot of this project was improv, but, I mean, it wasn't my first or second or third time making a spamton centipede.
The head was quite a complicated shape, so I carved a tiny model out of craft foam, covered one half of it in masking tape, then cut the masking tape mask (hah) into flat pieces. I then traced the pieces onto graph paper and manually scaled them up by using the fact that I wanted the nose to be 1 ft long as reference. The rest of the pattern pieces were very simple, as wormton's teeth, body, legs, etc were very easy to translate into 2D shapes. I used old school notes as paper for the body, as I needed a lot of it. It was entertaining cutting exerpts of Moby Dick and English Renaissance biographies into body parts. I ended up making the body significantly longer; I had to spend $100 dollars on fur anyways, so why not make a maximum size one?
Making the pattern pieces took around 8 hours. While waiting for the fur to ship, I started cutting out the teeth, legs, and eyes. By the time the fur arrived, I had already sewn 36 worm teeth. I did an 11hr all-nighter to cut all the fur in one sitting the day it arrived. After a long vacuuming session and an uptake in the amount of polyester fiber in my lungs, I finished cutting the pieces, taking about 18 hours and 40 minutes.
Tumblr media
As usual, the head was the first thing I worked on. It was...kind of wonky once I flipped it inside out. I trimmed some of the fur so that I could actually see what was happening. The main issues were the lack of any forehead, the nose being way too wide, and the cheeks being too flat. I did some ladder stitching as well as modifying the thing from the inside, and eventually made the head look much better. The cheeks still don't stick out that much still, but I'm happy with how the head looks now. I think it conquered the sopping wet owl resemblance. I inserted wire into the nose and jaws to help them keep their shape.
When I started this project, I wasn't sure whether to make it based off of Wormton or just a copyright-free malworm; I decided to do both. I went with red for the non-Spamton version, as I think it really fits the cartoony fly/mothman-style cryptid look malworms are supposed to have.
Tumblr media
I sewed a square pouch into the throat and put in all those teeth. I used hot glue to wrap blue squares around a wire for the proboscis, because I think I would've gone bonkers cuckoo bananas if I had to hand sew that entire thing. The throat pouch holds the proboscis when it's not extended, as well as anything else I wanted to shove in there. I never measured it, but it's around 4-5 ft long. I finally made the Spamton... eye patches(?) and a pair of eyelids, though I didn't end up using them in the photo shoot. I also made a new pair of nostrils, as the old ones kind of got swallowed up from all the plastic surgery I was giving him
Tumblr media
Now that the head was finished, I got to work on the body. I sewed the white belly and segments of the body together. I left most of the tail open, as the fur was too thick for me to flip it out at a certain point. I worked on the legs, next. After living out my cosplay dreams by putting the claws on my fingers like bugles chips, I grouped the claws together and sewed most of each leg and foot together, leaving me with many pairs of charred drumsticks (did not taste good)
Tumblr media
I attached an extra long wire structure into each set of claws, then threaded the wire through each respective leg and stuffed them. I ladder stitched the claws to each foot, then stuffed each with some plastic beans in order to give the feet weight. I then finished sewing each foot shut. I now had a pile of disembodied limbs and one very long scarf.
Tumblr media
I wound many long pieces of wire together to create an armature for the body. While the plush's body is way too heavy to be properly posable, the wire does still give some structure. I wrapped the extra long ends of the legs' wires to the metal spine, using the body's leg holes for reference. I then pulled the body up the metal armature like a sock.
Tumblr media
I pulled the legs through their respective holes and stuffed the body. It was the first time the malworm was huggable! It's sort of like an oversized body pillow, in a way. I had to ladder-stich all the limbs, the head, and the rest of the tail, as it would've been completely impossible to flip inside out. It was quite difficult to do on furry fabric, and my thread frequently broke from the force I had to pull with to keep the stitches tight. Eventually, I got everything attached to some degree.
Tumblr media
The last details I worked on were the mane, tail tufts, and scopula pads. The mane and tail tufts were ladder stitched onto the body, but I decided to use glue to attach the pads to the feet. I think the extra blue details make his proboscis fit much better, and who doesn't love spider paw pads? I also glued some velcro to the eye patches so that they stay attached better. They slide under the black eye rings.
Tumblr media
My malworm was finally finished! I tried to put a lot of effort into the photo shoot so that people who don't know about the AU can enjoy it. I wanted to make it seem like some weird entity whose only goal is obtaining more Spamton brainrot. Hence it making Spamton on Mario Kart DS under the bed, obsessing over the Spamton Plush, inspecting the Spamton Shrine, and just generally harassing the photographer (me, I guess?). I wanted to capture the silliness, creepiness, and lack of respect for personal space that Spamton is known for. I thought about giving him a bag of doritos under the bed like that one image of the isopods eating them, but went with the DS instead. I thought it would be funny to see this thing playing Super Mario 64 DS (or Super Spamton 64) and here the "buh bye!" sound effect when it closes the DSi XL.
That's all from me, for now. I have other Wormton related matter to attend to.
Don't let the parasitic Spamton larvae bite

There are two things wrong with Tommy, both very serious.
What I thought was a stuck third eyelid as the result of an injury is actually the result of increased eye pressure caused by either an infection behind her eye or a mass. The doctor is leaning towards it being an infection as she is diabetic and prone to developing infections. He gave her an injection of antibiotics and additional antibiotic drops to put directly in the eye. If it does not improve in the next two weeks, she’ll need imaging to determine if it’s a mass and maybe surgery (via the inside of her mouth) to drain the infection if it is one.
Secondly, the benign inflammatory growth that was removed from her lower jaw has grown back and needs to be surgically removed. Again. The doctor is waiting two weeks to see if the pressure in her eye decreases before attempting to remove the mass on her jaw that way he only has to put her under anesthesia once to do the jaw surgery, imaging and/or draining of the infection behind her eye.
Worst case scenario: My cat has a tumor in her head pressing up against her eye AND a growth on her jaw that needs removal.
Medium case scenario: My cat has a serious infection behind her eye that needs to be drained and a growth on her jaw that needs removal and may need removal again.
Best case scenario: My cat has a little infection between her eye that clears right up and a benign growth on her jaw that never returns after being removed a second time.
I’m devastated. I’m numb. I’m trying to ready myself for the worst case scenario.
The thing is, she had been doing really, really, really well before this. And she still is. Her glucose is perfect. She’s gained weight, she has a great appetite and she’s not obsessed with water, she’s active, she’s playful, she even tries to groom herself. She has been better in the last month than she has been in the last year. And now this. Fairly suddenly. I knew the growth in her mouth was slowly returning but the doctor hadn’t thought it was urgent before this because we were struggling with her insulin.
Today’s appointment was $400, for her insulin, syringes, two types of antibiotics and I’m sure hazard pay for the poor vet coming in on a Sunday to examine my little demon creature. I don’t know how much her surgery and possible additional imagining will cost. Please consider donating to my ko-fi.

The average woman spends -
• $28 on makeup
• $34 on haircuts
• $15 on hair products
• $11 on hair removal
• $23 on moisturizing skincare
•$17 on anti-aging products
• $ 5 on eyebrow threading
• $85 on teeth whitening
■The cost of common cosmetic surgeries:
• Breast augmentation: $6,450
• Liposuction: $6,000
• Nose reshaping: $5,046
• Eyelid surgery: $4,525
• Tummy tuck: $5,798
● The yearly cost of getting a botox : $1200 ● The yearly cost of getting lip fillers : $800
□Yearly cost without Botox/fillers/surgery: $2616
□ Yearly cost with Botox/fillers/surgery $4891
In a study by Advanced Dermatology, it was revealed that the average woman spends $285 more than men on grooming services. While men spend more on gym membership, supplements and haircuts, women spend on skincare, hair products and colour.
If you compound the aboves costs, women spend - $156,960 and $450,420 respectively on unnecessary beauty procedures in their lifetime. Some women might even spend millions of dollars in their lifetime on their appearance. This extra expenditure feeds pockets of (male) CEOs of beauty companies who thrive off of women's insecurities. The more women fall into these traps, the more unrealistic the beauty standards will become.
● Meadian House cost - $227,000
● Average car cost - $48,000
● Average Overseas Vacation cost - $3250
● Cost of a nice hobby in a lifetime - $72,000
●Cost of a book collection(150 books) - $1800
Making women waste money on useless items allows men to hoard capital. Moreover, there is a huge gender gap in trading. Men are much more likely to invest extra income into the stock market than women, however, when women do invest they tend to perform much better when it comes to trading owing to their diligence and loss assessment.Female ownership of monetary property and real estate is paramount to their liberation. Society has created an ecosystem that dissuades women from possessing capital. What's worse is that when crisis hits, it's women that have to give up their savings for their need of money is disregarded as they rely on their husbands for financial support. Women amassing wealth and knowledge is the key for their freedom.

Your opinion on plastic surgery?
critical of it. the industry creates and profits from insecurities and preys on mentally ill and vulnerable people, especially women of all ages. its often a superficial fix for societal problems (impossible and harmful beauty ideals and the importance of physical attractiveness in general) and individual problems (body dysmorphia, gender dysphoria, low self-esteem, trauma, etc). its addicting, especially the injections. i know from my own experience that these things dont alleviate deep-rooted issues in the long run and once youre hooked its difficult to stop.
i dont judge anyone who gets plastic surgery (it would be hypocritical considering my own choices) but i do hate those #proudplastics (women who brag about having had plastic surgery done). and i do worry about its rise.
when i was young, it was rare to see anyone who had obvious procedures done, now its everywhere: social media, advertising, shows and movies, and even just on regular people. anytime i go outside i see several people - women in the very most cases - who have injections or (im good at spotting those) nosejobs, eyelid surgery, and i have even seen some bbls. while i understand that celebrities are under enormous pressure to adhere to beauty ideals and even set new standards, i do think that women like kim k and ariana who were already objectively gorgeous but still had so many procedures done are a part of the problem. i consider plastic surgery to be a social contagion.
i think before and after photos and videos should be banned from the web entirely and plastic surgeons should not be allowed to advertise on social media. the only good thing is that procedures done by a certified doctor are not a big health risk, but due to the popularity a lot of women go to sketchy doctors because they couldnt afford it otherwise, which has already cost lives. a lot of plastic surgeons should be shot because they operate on people who are clearly mentally unstable or it poses a huge health risk.
im not against it entirely but it should be a last resort and generally discouraged and thats the opposite of what we are witnessing at the moment. im super worried about the development of normalisation and how this is affecting already toxic beauty standards.

Sharing from the Tiny Whiskers Animal Rescue instagram:
Venmo for donations is Christy-R-13, profile picture is a hamster!
“DONATIONS NEEDED!!
Darling Mimi has quickly become a favorite at the rescue. She is such a sweet and calm girl. She came to us with a growth on her eyelid. Yesterday we took her in to our vet, Valley View Pet Hospital, and they recommended removal. She is due for surgery next thursday, August 24th. Afterwards she will need some eye drops for a few weeks and a post op appointment & then she will be in the clear!
We are asking for donations to help cover the cost of her procedure. The low end estimate is $260 and the high end is just over $600. It’s not cheap, but Mimi is worth it!
We are still in the process of filing our 501c3 paperwork with the help of our lawyer (which is costing us $2,000 for legal fees) and opening a bank account specifically for the rescue, so for right now donations would go directly to our founder, who is also Mimi’s foster parent.
Please LIKE, SHARE, and DONATE if you can! We are a small rescue and the majority of the cost to care for the 14 hamsters, 6 gerbils, and 10 sanctuary residents currently in our care comes out of our own pockets. We do it out of love for the animals but we could use your help with this big vet bill!!!”

This article was first published in Russian by the Siberia-based outlet People of Baikal. The following translation appeared in The Beet, a weekly email dispatch from Meduza in English covering Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Sign up here to get the next issue delivered directly to your inbox.
“Don’t close your eyes! I told you: If you close them, I’ll stop doing the operation and send you home!” the surgeon hissed.
It was 2009, and Natalya Badmayeva was lying on an operating table at the Republican Clinical Hospital in Ulan-Ude. She tried her best to stop trembling and keep her eyes open. After the surgeon made the last stitch, she told Natalya she could get up and go home. In the corridor, other patients were waiting their turn to go under the knife.
Natalya, then a 20-year-old lawyer, had undergone eyelid surgery on her lunch break. “The operation took place clandestinely. I actually shouldn’t have been in that operating room,” she explained. “The surgery was over in half an hour.”
Natalya put on a pair of dark glasses and went straight from the hospital to visit a client. At the pre-trial detention center entrance, she showed the duty officer her ID. “What did you get done? Your dabharyashki?” asked the officer, nodding knowingly.
The term dabharyashka (from the Buryat word dabharyaa, which literally means “fold”) refers to the skin fold of the upper eyelid. Apparently, the officer had seen Natalya’s stitches through her sunglasses. She was one of the first people in Buryatia to have surgery to change the shape of her eyes. Three years later, she had another operation to make them even wider.
The names of some of the people in this story have been changed at their request.
Scalpels, needles, and glue
Many people of Asian descent are born with monolids — an eyelid shape that doesn’t have a crease. And some people go to great lengths to create this skin fold and widen their eyes. For those who undergo plastic surgery, the operation typically involves an incision along the upper eyelid, the removal of “excess” skin and fat, and the application of sutures to create an “eye-opening” crease (also known as a “double eyelid”).
Blepharoplasty — the medical term for eyelid surgery — is the third most common plastic surgery procedure in the world, after breast augmentation and liposuction. With nearly half a million surgical procedures annually, Russia ranks ninth globally for the total number of plastic surgeries. But for eyelid surgery, Russia is in third place, with more than 92,000 operations in 2020 alone.
Researchers in Russia note that the further east a region is from Moscow, the more eyelid surgeries are performed there. In Ulan-Ude — the regional capital of Buryatia, with a population of just over 400,000 people — there are about 10 clinics that offer this procedure for prices ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 rubles (about $225 to $335).
Then there are the companies that offer “medical tours” to neighboring Mongolia. These packages cover a round-trip bus ticket from Ulan-Ude to Ulaanbaatar, the operation itself, and an interpreter’s services. One popular clinic in Ulaanbaatar offered eyelid surgery for just 18,500 rubles ($210). By comparison, a local Korean clinic charged around 160,000 rubles (about $1,800). Performers, entrepreneurs, and officials who want to get their eyelids done usually travel to South Korea, where the procedure costs anywhere from $1,800 to $3,000.
Other people try to alter their eyelids themselves — using a needle or a sharpened pencil to damage the delicate skin, hoping that the scarring will form a crease over time. Alternative, less painful methods include using eyelid glue or adhesive tape to create a “double eyelid” temporarily.
Natalya Badmayeva’s mother, Tamara, used a sharpened pencil to break the skin along her own upper eyelids; when the scratches healed, they formed a crease. Natalya would later try to replicate this procedure herself but found it too painful. “I realized that I wouldn’t be able to ‘draw’ a deep enough cut, and so I didn’t keep doing it,” she recalled.
When Natalya was a teenager, her mother bought her eyelid glue, but Natalya found it uncomfortable to wear. “It feels heavy on your eyelid. If you use glue, you can feel how everything is being pulled together. If you use tape, it’s uncomfortable when you blink,” she said.
Tamara, who has since passed away, never explained why she gave herself eyelid creases or wanted her daughter to have them, too. “I didn’t want to look narrow-eyed. I wanted to look wide-eyed,” Natalya said, explaining her own thinking. “In my youth, Buryats were [considered] village people. Narrow-eyed, swarthy, uneducated, Buryat-speaking — this was the image I was trying to escape. I specifically didn’t learn to speak Buryat and had my eyelids done twice.”
‘No one told me to my face’
Several sources told People of Baikal that, as children, they dreamed of being ethnically Russian; when their family members spoke their native language, they felt embarrassed and pretended they couldn’t understand them.
Natalya remembers encountering aggression due to her appearance when she left Buryatia for the first time at age 18. She and her friends were waiting in line at a food stand in Novosibirsk when some old ladies started harassing them. “These old ladies said, ‘Who are you? We don’t go to your country!’ and they pushed us out of the line. We told them we’re from Buryatia, which is part of Russia. We’re citizens of the Russian Federation, just like them. But the old ladies didn’t believe us,” Natalya said.
Ivan Romanov, 38, moved from Ulan-Ude to Moscow in 2012. A dentist by training, he spent a year applying for jobs in the capital. However, he found that some dental clinics — including ones at public hospitals — would post job ads explicitly seeking “Slavic” physicians.
Even clinics that didn’t have this requirement wouldn’t hire Ivan. Having a Russian name and surname was often enough to get him an interview, but they never called him back. All his classmates soon found jobs, but he remained unemployed. “I didn’t understand what was happening. I’d go home, cry because I felt powerless, and get angry,” Ivan recalled. “No one told me to my face that they wouldn’t hire me because I’m Buryat, but the logic was clear.”
Ivan took screenshots of the job ads from public clinics looking to hire “Slavic” doctors and wrote a complaint to the Russian Health Ministry. In response, ministry officials told him that government institutions don’t place such ads and suggested that the postings had appeared on the website “due to a technical glitch.” (At the same time, they acknowledged that such ads are common among private clinics.)
Ivan believes his dental career didn’t take off because of his appearance. After a year of unsuccessfully trying to land a job in his field, he began working for a company in Moscow selling medical equipment. Today, he runs his own business.
At 35, Ivan had eyelid surgery to make himself look “European.” A surgeon at a Moscow clinic reshaped his eyelids, creating creases and removing the epicanthus — a skin fold stretching from the upper eyelid, covering the eye’s inner corner. Ivan had dreamed of this since his youth.
No shortage of insults
The discourse around Asian people’s appearance inevitably leads to a discussion about “narrow eyes,” notes Erzhen Erdeni, a Buryat anti-colonial activist and researcher from the Siberian city of Irkutsk. “The expression ‘narrow eyes’ makes my blood boil,” she said. “Asian eyes can be considered narrow only if they’re compared with European eyes, which are taken as the standard.”
“Russian speakers have come up with no shortage of insults for Asian eyes,” added Erzhen.
The activist still remembers the first time she was insulted over her appearance. She was seven years old and walking to school alone in Irkutsk when a group of boys started throwing rocks at her and calling her names.
People who don’t look “European” encounter racism everywhere in Russia, Erzhen said. After she moved to Moscow to study, for example, uniformed officers stopped her every two weeks or so, asking to see her documents, fishing for bribes, and threatening to take her to the police station. “I could walk with a Slavic-looking friend, and she wouldn’t get asked any questions. But I was stopped all the time — it could happen anywhere,” said Erzhen, who now lives in Tbilisi, Georgia. “I developed a persistent fear of people in uniform that I carry with me to this day. Every time I see a man in a uniform in Russia, my heart sinks, and the anxiety kicks in.”
According to the SOVA Center, which monitors extremism and hate crimes in Russia, there was a spike in racially motivated attacks in 2023. Researchers recorded at least 60 violent acts last year — up from nine in 2022. In at least 21 of these cases, the attackers targeted people whom they perceived as “Asian.”
SOVA Center director Alexander Verkhovsky said that while anyone who “looks different” can fall victim to a hate crime in Russia, people of “conventionally Asian appearance” are targeted most often. This includes not only Central Asians but also people indigenous to Russia, such as Buryats, Tyvans, and Kalmyks. “The attacker isn’t asking to see a passport; he’s looking at facial features,” Verkhovsky underscored.
“If you’re a person of ‘non-Slavic’ appearance in any public place [...] you always have to be on guard. An insult could come your way at any moment,” said Buryat journalist Aleksandra Garmazhapova. “Any old conflict could end with the phrase: ‘Go back to China!’”
Garmazhapova moved to St. Petersburg with her family at age six. She got involved in political activism in 2005 after far-right extremists murdered 20-year-old anti-fascist activist Timur Kacharava in the city center. She left Russia eight years ago and now heads the Free Buryatia Foundation.
The Sova Center’s researchers attribute the surge in racially motivated violence in 2023 to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. “War inevitably brings about an increase in aggression in society. Legitimizing aggression is a side effect of war,” Verkhovsky explained.
‘Why am I hurting myself a second time?’
Valentina Radnayeva, the head of the ophthalmology department at the Children’s Hospital in Ulan-Ude, said that people of all ages come in for eyelid surgery. It’s the most common cosmetic procedure in Buryatia, and the hospital accepts not only locals but also patients from Tyva, Khakassia, Altai, and other republics across Russia. “For young people, we don’t remove skin [from the upper eyelid]; we just form a fold. And it turns out beautifully!” the surgeon said with a smile.
Enkhmaa, a surgeon at a clinic in Ulaanbaatar that patients on medical tours from Ulan-Ude often visit, claimed that eyelid surgery makes people “more beautiful” and more self-confident. She operates on patients 12 and up, so long as minors have parental consent. According to Enkhmaa, there hasn’t been a single case in her 20 years of experience where a patient regretted making their eyes wider (she said that the most common complaints have to do with side effects.) “This surgery changes people’s lives for the better,” the surgeon maintained.
Natalya, the lawyer from Ulan-Ude, said that she also wanted to have “beautiful” eyes — and that’s why she opted for a second surgery. “I wasn’t satisfied with the results of the first operation. The shape of my eyes looked too natural. I wanted to see a difference. I wanted my eyes to be wider,” she explained.
Natalya’s first surgery, at the Republican Hospital in 2009, took place without a consultation and only cost three or four thousand rubles. For her second surgery, she saved up about 20,000 rubles and went to a private clinic. But somehow, she found it scarier. “I remember lying on the operating table and saying to myself, ‘Stupid me! Why am I hurting myself a second time?’ The doctor was polite, he explained everything, there was good anesthetic, but it was still unpleasant,” she recalled.
After the operation, Natalya remained under observation at the clinic for 30 or 40 minutes. Then, her brother picked her up and took her home. She was on maternity leave at the time, so she didn’t have to go back to work. Natalya says the bruises and swelling from the second surgery went away after a few weeks — but to this day, she remains sensitive to bright light.
“My friends don’t see a big difference between how I looked before and after the operation. But I think that I’ve changed,” Natalya said. “It’s possible that this is how I feel on the inside. I’ve lived with my eyelid folds longer than I lived without them. I’m more comfortable this way.”
Ivan, the dentist, paid 85,000 rubles (more than $950) to go under the knife in Moscow in 2020. “I was conscious, under local anesthesia, and I heard everything the doctor said. He explained what was happening in detail and commented, ‘You were right to get the surgery. You have a large accumulation of fat, and it weighs down your eyelids. It makes you seem sad. We’re going to correct it now, and you’ll look just great!’”
However, Ivan wasn’t happy with the end result. “I went through every circle of hell. It took a long time for everything to heal. I spent a lot of money to remove the scars left over from the stitches. Moreover, the surgeon didn’t stitch the skin of the upper eyelid on one eye properly,” he complained. “My life didn’t change at all. People who know me well noticed that something was different, but it’s usually difficult for them to say what exactly.”
‘At least you can influence how you look’
Anna Tsyrenova, a 38-year-oldfrom Ulan-Ude, was surprised when she recently learned that all her friends her own age had undergone eyelid surgery by the time they were 20. “Many people hide the fact that they’ve had this surgery. It’s such a sensitive topic that even friends don’t want to talk about it,” she said. “When I finally started asking around, they said they had their eyelids done to look more kempt.”
Anna says it never occurred to her to have eyelid surgery. And she rejects the notion that she has experienced discrimination in Russia — even though she’s been mistaken for a tourist, told that she “speaks Russian well,” and stopped by police officers in Moscow and St. Petersburg. “I don’t judge people who’ve gone to the plastic surgeon and made their eyes wider. I just don’t understand them,” she said.
According to social scientist Maria Vyatchina, plastic surgery can give patients a sense of control over their own lives — even when they feel powerless to influence the world around them. “There are things you cannot change, but you can at least influence how you look. This gives you a sense of agency,” she explained.
The development of new medical technologies is another powerful driver behind the popularity of plastic surgery, making it less risky, less painful, and cheaper. Indeed, certain surgeries are becoming more accessible and even “fashionable,” with trends transcending borders. For example, the eyelid surgery industry in Russia and Mongolia is heavily influenced by South Korea, which, in turn, is largely guided by standards adopted in Japan.
Vyatchina also pointed to the work of anthropologists Sara Lenehan and Carmen Alvaro Jarrín, who found that the popularity of “nose jobs” in Iran and Brazil reflects shifts in how people signal their wealth and aspirations of upward mobility. The same is true in Russia, where poverty, a lack of social mobility, and patriarchal norms make one’s appearance a type of social currency.
In this context, what eye shape is considered “beautiful” is directly related to popular attitudes. But, as Vyatchina underscored, beauty standards are far from neutral or implicit — on the contrary, they’re politically charged. “Racism and xenophobia take different forms, including defining dominant beauty standards that leave no room for acceptance and discussing diversity,” she said. “There is so much racism in Russian society.”
‘Don’t become the dragon’
In the spring of 2022, Free Buryatia Foundation president Aleksandra Garmazhapova launched a campaign for the “Denazification of Russia.” On Instagram, she asked her followers to share stories of their encounters with racism and xenophobia. Over the next three weeks, she received some 4,000 testimonies.
The responses show that even indigenous people who resemble ethnic Russians — including Udmurt, Chuvash, and other peoples — have to contend with racism in Russia. People recounted how, from childhood, they were censured for speaking their native language. One person said he had internalized the idea that it was “shameful” to be Mari. The campaign received countless emotional accounts: many people had never had the opportunity to talk openly about racism, while others had previously failed to recognize that what they experienced constitutes discrimination.
The Russian language often lacks the terminology for discussions about racism and xenophobia. During her interview, Garmazhapova drew attention to how she sometimes slipped into using “not just literal translations but English terms.” Yet, Vyatchina says it’s still important to use these words, even if they seem complex or incomprehensible. Researchers believe that terms more suitable to Russian realities will emerge when Russian society begins to discuss racism actively.
At the same time, Garmazhapova warned against going to rhetorical extremes, which she believes are just as harmful as not discussing racism at all. “The media, activists, and everyone else must work to avoid becoming xenophobes like Vladimir Putin. When fighting a dragon, you cannot become that same dragon yourself,” she said. “We must make every effort to fight narratives of hatred, racism, and xenophobia and not to end up producing the same ideas, just in a different sauce.”
Now a mother of two, Natalya says she fears for her son and daughter because they are Buryat and feels the need to protect them from harmful stereotypes. “I understand the attitude the world has developed towards Buryats. The word ‘Buryat’ has become a symbol of savagery and cruelty. People need someone to hate, to take out their anger on. It will be difficult to rehabilitate this general perception and attitude,” she said.
Natalya remembers how her own mother cared for her, buying her eyelid glue and encouraging her to get “folds.” Assuming her children would share her own insecurities, she tried to take the same approach with them. “I thought, Why don’t I tape my six-year-old daughter’s [eyelids],” Natalya said. “Thank God my child has a brain! She ran around a little and then took off the strips [of tape] I had stuck on her. She thinks she’s beautiful the way she is. She has insecurities, but they have nothing to do with the shape of her eyes.”

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Procedures in Mumbai.
The eye is a delicate and prominent part of the human body, and it is nearly impossible not to feel it if anything goes wrong with one’s visual acuity. This does not even have to be about the most severe eye problem as a condition as subtle as droopiness can affect one’s vision to an extent. It is to this end that eyelid surgery may be recommended to correct the situation. Furthermore, eyelid surgery may be performed to get rid of wrinkles that had developed around the eyes. An expert in this field of surgery is known as an oculoplastic surgeon, and you need not look beyond The Esthetic Clinics if you are looking to have your eyelid surgery in India. This is because the clinic has got some of the Best Eyelid Surgeon in Mumbai – like Dr. Debraj Shome – and also the right facility to conveniently perform the procedure.
Tumblr media
What do I need to do before having eyelid surgery?
After it must have been confirmed that you will be needing eyelid surgery, you will be required to take to some instructions. Adhering to these instructions will increase the probability of having a complication-free procedure. That said, the specialist will demand that you see to the following:
Stop taking blood-thinning medications like warfarin, aspirin, etc – in case you’re using [or intend to use] one – 2 weeks before the day set for your surgery
Desist from smoking and alcohol consumption at least 3 weeks before your eyelid surgery
Do not use makeup to the clinic on the day of the surgery
Oculoplastic surgery in Mumbai
On the day of the surgery, you will be led to the operating theatre where you will be administered either local or general anaesthesia to numb the area. Once the effect of the anaesthesia sets in, the oculoplastic surgeon will proceed to incise along the eyelid, and then get rid of the fat, skin, and/or muscle that may be responsible for the droopy eyelid. He will do this carefully to avoid overcorrecting or under-correcting the situation – all that is required is to return the eyelid to its natural position. The incision is thereafter closed using a suture, and the surgeon will eventually clean up the area.
How long does eyelid surgery take?
The surgeon should get your eyelid surgery completed in under 1 – 2 hours. This will basically be dependent on the severity of your condition, as well as the number of eyelids affected. There are instances where patients have even had to be admitted to the hospital wards for one or two days after an eyelid surgery – this is, however, rare. Relatedly, you should have someone around to accompany you back home after the surgery as you may not be able to drive yourself home.
What happens after the eyelid surgery?
Of course, your recovery will be a top priority once you have completed your eyelid surgery, and this can be accelerated or well managed if you take to some recommendations. For one, you should take note of the fact that swelling and/or bruising sensations are commonplace after having eyelid surgery. As such, you will need to have a cold pack over your eyelid to alleviate the swelling, and also have your head in an elevated position while sleeping. Additionally, you should consider the following:
Take your prescription drugs religiously
Avoid doing any strenuous work for some weeks after having your eyelid surgery
Do away with makeup for some weeks; this is particularly as it concerns the area that was operated
Use sunglasses when going outdoors

Headcanons for Alejandra Huerta-Morena (one of my TWST OC's!)
⋆ She does have magic, but her magic is incompatible in Twisted Wonderland. So in order for her to actually learn magic, she would have to start all over again. So this is why, for now, she's in Ramshackle!
⋆ If Alejandra had an UM, it would be this:
"Fortuna Estrella" Her fortunes and future readings are extremely accurate and it allows her to see a little bit into the future. Her visions are also vivid and more detailed than the average seer's. A small reading would cost her only a little bit of her magic, but they would have to recuperate for up to 12 hours before using it again. A good sized reading would have to take up to 24 hours to be fully recuperated from before in order to do another reading. Finally, for a full on reading, she would need to say the full chant as well as tap into her full magical potential. But that takes a toll on her mental health as well as causes migraines. Depending on how intense the vision is, she could end up losing blood via having a nose bleed or pass out due to the mental exertion it brings upon them. For them to be able to use it fully again, they would need up to 48 hours to recuperate from using up that much magic before doing it again.
⋆ Ale identifies as a demigirl since they're okay with femininity as a concept and for themself sometimes, but they do sometimes prefer a more gender-neutral, more nebulous form of gender identity.
⋆ Ms. Huerta-Morena is proficient when on the drums from the time that she had started a band with some of her classmates while in school.
⋆ Yes, she's also intersex with not only clitoromegaly, but with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which was found out early in her life (during her later childhood years when puberty hit with irregular periods, higher amounts of testosterone, more muscle at the age of seven, ended up being taller than everyone else in their grade, having some thick facial hair that they would end up shaving off, broader shoulders, XX chromosomes, deeper, huskier voice, body hair on her arms, legs, her chest, stomach, and a bit at the side and bottom of her toes)!
⋆ Their height is 5'11.5"
⋆ Before she ended up in Twisted Wonderland, she was actually a dancer starting from the age of three, which means that prior to being transported, she's danced for 21 years as a Broadway dancer! (Tenth life)
⋆ They have a toned, fit physique from dancing and sword fighting.
⋆ When she saw that Night Raven College didn't have a club that didn't specifically cater to her interests, Alejandra ended up making a club called History and Appreciation of Dance (HAD).
⋆ Having lost their eye through having acid thrown at them, they now have gray and golden glass eyes that they carry around with them. Every now and again, they would have to replace that glass eye with the other one. Their skin around their eye and the upper half of her cheek as well as on their eyelid is tender and sensitive after many surgeries performed on them form having acid thrown at them. No matter what the surgeons and doctors tried to do, her eye couldn't be saved due to how much it had melted when the acid had made contact.
⋆ Alejandra seems to only understand the basics of how modern technology (such as smartphones and such) work but beyond that, she would need some assistance.
⋆ Although she hasn't played any video games in her life, she'd be willing to be taught how! She's more proficient with board games though and has a competitive streak when it comes to them!
⋆ She has a trust system (kind of like a dating sim/otome game style system) where if you get to their highest level, they’ll show you their face underneath their mask and tell you about their true self.
⋆ Right now, the reason that you wouldn't see facial hair or excess body hair on Alejandra is because they're the type to (right now since this can change based on which interactions they'll have!) want to not want to deal with a lot of body hair, especially their facial hair since going to laser appointments makes them nearly freeze and lose their breath. Going to the doctors for any kind of exams (especially those involving surgeries that are for her genitals, doctors and surgeons taking pictures of her naked body, the amount of medications she has to take just so she doesn't go into shock, etc.) has made her wariness and fear of the healthcare system increase tenfold. So she ends up avoiding most of it along with with therapy like the plague.
⋆ They're Afro-Latina with some indigenous blood in them, so they'll have a sepia (reddish-brown, so some warmer undertones with some warm overtones) complexion with hair that's almost constantly in locs to protect her hair and she washes it like once a month in order for the oils to not dry out. She also has coarse hair that's also tight and curly, requiring a lot of time and patience to care for! It can also be seen as puffy since it's bouncy and has evenly distributed tight curls, so her hair's almost constantly in locs to protect her hair and she washes it like once a month in order for the oils to not dry out. As for her nose, she has a thinner bridge with a fuller nose. Her eyes are a smoky, charcoal grey due to her having some blue eyed- people in her family tree and some people who have other eye colors such as green as well!
⋆ Her piercings consist a golden bottom lip piercing, a golden septum piercing, and long golden earrings of a sun and a crescent moon with Alejandra having a mole on the bottom of her cheek and closer to her pouty lips. Accompanying her neck is a black choker with a golden crescent moon on it alongside a delicate golden necklace with upside down triangle patterns closer to where her shoulder blades are.
⋆ In terms of her estranged family, she still loves them, but it's complicated since she resents the things that they did to her such as telling the doctors and surgeons that it was okay to do surgeries on her without her consent as an infant and that's a big part of why she hates herself and her "ugly" body. Her younger brother, (changing his name from Alfonso) Diego, still loves and cares for her, but is ignorant of her struggles since they don't communicate as much as they used to. Alejandra and Diego are like 6 - 7 years apart in age difference too, so Alejandra almost had to raise Diego in a sense.
⋆ Alex has had ten lives thus far, averaging out to 500 years. This means that by approximately the age of 50, they are most likely to be met with some sort of deadly demise. Their soul is immortal and Alex ends up collecting all of the memories of their past lives, thus some family estrangement was inevitable. Especially in this life. However, her family member aren't immortal and their memories don't carry with them, so they get confused as to why she hold these grudges and resentments.
⋆ Alejandra doesn't exactly know what she wants in terms of family because she used to have a loving and caring family before her interest and hyperfixation on magic and alchemy in general (healing to be more specific). Since they had been so fixated and obsessed with that and with the trauma that she went through of literally being burned at the stake due to being accused of witchcraft. They abandoned and disowned her before that though and the heartache she went through because of the sins that she has committed in her family's eyes has caused her to have a sort of distorted and "warped", I guess, view of what family is supposed to be like. Although she would like to have a child in the future, her body with it's medical issues due to the physical and mental trauma that she went through along with the extreme stress of her bereavements would most likely cause her to have a miscarriage. They would literally think of themself as useless and unworthy of any kind of love, almost giving up on the concept of having that family that they desperately want. This pertains to all of her lives, not just the first and tenth.
⋆ Alex went by a fake name so that nobody could discover her true identity and that fake name (along with fake backstory) has given her some form of comfort from the life she used to have. Although for Malleus, they would have let him call them "Child of Man".
⋆ (Pertaining to her first life as a Countess when she was born and raised in Spain; before entering Twisted Wonderland in her tenth life) Still misses their family even if their family hates their guts. At least their younger brother still cares about them even if he ended up being the reason that she ended up burned at the stake and tortured by the village folk.
⋆ Alejandra is quite knowledgeable about many things that pertain to older things in history, which can come off as peculiar to many others in Night Raven College. Although she isn’t shy or timid, Ms. Huerta-Morena tends to keep to herself due to prioritizing their homework or other things within their respective dorm above all else. She is, however, not an introvert and more of an ambivert, preferring to blend into the background. Because they’re so secretive about their life and where they originally came from, they’re not likely to make a whole lot of friends. Of course, that’s all fine and dandy by them. They’re quite competitive when it comes to playing games, (almost) having only one rule. To win.
⋆ Background for her first life (this will be separated into four sections here with a star point so that it's a little bit more digestible to read): She's a human who was a noblewoman back in Spain during the time of the inquisition about 500 years ago. So because she was interested in magic and the art of healing, she would study up on it alone sometimes in her own bedroom while attending to her duties as a Lady (being the daughter of a countess and a Count since her father was knighted by the King of Spain for his service in the Spanish military). For a while, her own parents would do their best to dissuade and discipline her (since that was against the word of God) by having her work for some nuns and priests. Her mother had felt ashamed that she was not able to instill good Christian morals into her own daughter while her father was angry at Alejandra for having listened in on the servants speak about their magic. However, the more she had done work for the Nuns and priests, the less she believed in the glory and goodness of God due to seeing people starving and begging for food and money to feed their children, for medicine to get them through another day. Was that supposed to be God's doing? If it was, then Alejandra wanted nothing to do with it. So when she was allowed to go back to her family, she apologized to them and promised that she would do better as a daughter of God. But as she grew up, she would begin to combine elements of what she was taught by her mother, father, and servants through alchemy and the "dark arts". Alejandra had gone around in the dead of night dressed as a lower class citizen in order to give away some coins, food, and water along with medicine that she had made herself in order to help those in need. Since she knew that she was putting everything on the line by doing this, she would actually go by a different name. Maria.
⋆ There would be a rivalry between the Huerta-Morena home and a few others due to them wanting to be in the King and Queen's favor. As of that particular moment, Alejandra and her family were in the favor of the royalty in the Kingdom of Spain due to her father having been knighted for his service in the Spanish military. Because the families of the other noble houses were jealous of the Huerta-Morena's wealth and status, they would give orders to their servants to follow the family wherever they went. At first, nothing was amiss. The children were obedient and acted orderly just as they should and the parents loved each other dearly. This would go on until a servant of one of the noble houses of the royal court had discovered (way later down the line) that Alejandra had been making potions and other magical, alchemical items in order to heal others in a cabin in the countryside, they had told their master and mistress about this. That was when the rumors had spread amongst themselves and amongst the people living in Spain that Alejandra was a witch practicing the "dark arts". Because there were other noble houses wishing to seek favor with the royalty of the Kingdom of Spain and it was a tumultuous time for those who weren't of pure Spanish blood (those who were Moorish, Jewish, Muslim, etc.) and the fact that Alejandra's ancestors had come from Mexico a couple of centuries earlier as slaves (yes, she is of Indigenous Mexican heritage along with having both Moorish and Jewish ancestors as well as being part Spanish like her parents and younger brother are), they were completely screwed. Before they knew it, their home would be ransacked by the Church, finding books about alchemy, magic, some writings of some ancient rituals that could cure others of their suffering, etc. Due to having found these writings and scriptures, the family would be ripped of their status and their possessions handed to the Church.
⋆ Not only did Alejandra and her family lose everything because of this, but it was due to the fact that now the other noble houses had more power than the Huerta-Morena's. Now it seemed as if they didn't run away to some other country, then they would end up dying by hanging or by burning. Alejandra would end up sparing her family by having them pack whatever it is they had left. But now, they were on the run. Becoming desperate for some kind of freedom and salvation, Alejandra would pray to God and the Gods in the skies to listen to her prayers and save them from their doomed fate. No matter what it took, she would make sure that they were safe even if now they despised her for what she had done, practicing alchemy and magic in order to save and heal others from their fate.
⋆ At this point in time, no matter what she had done, her family just wouldn't have it. There would be verbal spats and arguments about her digging even deeper into the arcane arts, going back on her promises to be on the righteous path. Due to her desperation, she would revert to darker arts and praying to the Gods. Because her family couldn't take it anymore, they had would pack up their belongings and leave her in the cabin all alone. Being all alone in a world where it practically hated her for her existence had nearly broken Alejandra… Was there any hope left for someone like her? Her family was everything to her, yet all they could see her as was just a traitor; as someone who didn't deserve to be in the family and a liability to them. All she had left was her fervent worship of the Gods, her altar, and the grimoires and books that she had been studying on magic.
⋆ Rumors spread like wildfire of Alejandra being in cahoots with the devil, of consorting with other witches of the forest and dancing naked, being a part of devilish rituals that were unholy and unnatural. The leader of the village had ordered the villagers to go find her and bring her back alive. But that wasn't what Antonio (the name of Alejandra's younger brother) had grown up with. This wasn't the version of her that he had seen! She was nurturing, protective, and fearless to the point of having defended him from bullies due to him being weak physically. However, he could not deny that she had fallen down the wayside of the righteous path. Hiding amongst the villagers that went off in search of her and the accursed cabin, he would do his best to try and find a way to bring her back. To see if she could be convinced once more to walk down the righteous path and be a daughter of God again. But what he and the other villagers had found had horrified and troubled Antonio deeply. Notes on how to summon creatures and spirits from other dimensions and worlds?! Written nonsense on how to create potions and spells to "heal" (using quotations in this case due to them not believing in that kind of logic and instead believing that God could heal all) others and actually relieve them of their suffering??? All of this was nothing but proof that Alejandra was a witch! A bride of the devil! Hearing noises of her home being ransacked, Ale would come out of her bedroom and go into the main room. Unfortunately, that was a terrible idea on her behalf. The villagers and Antonio snatched her, her cabin having been ransacked and her work having been stolen to burn. Dragging her to the center of the village, she struggled in the arms of the strongest villagers. Having already declared her a witch, they would tie her to a pole and then set fire to the hay, the people watching as she pleaded for them to hear her out, to stop this madness. But it was too late.
⋆ (Fake backstory for when Alejandra gets isekai'd into Twisted Wonderland; also mentions their fake name which is Athanasia Vita "Eternal Life"; will be divided up into sections so that it's easier to read): Coming from a humble, nomadic background, their older mother had raised them alone after they were found on the streets of her hometown. Traveling from town to town, they would tell people their fortunes, whether they were good or bad. There were even times that they would go almost without any Thaumarks/Madol and had to save them for another day. It was one night that tells a story about a girl who went on a magical adventure with some animal friends. Finding others like them along the way, they then proceeded to get rid of the evil threat that was planning to rule the world. From there, they became well-known as heroes and they lived happily ever after. Of course, that was only so that she could have good dreams when she slept since she didn't want her child to be thinking about the cruel reality of her situation of merely surviving on the meager earnings of that day’s Thaumarks/Madol.
⋆ From there, Athanasia had suddenly found her mother to be ill. Not having enough Thaumarks/Madol for medicine, she had created some herself and found that she was talented in terms of magic. Using some of her magic that night, she had predicted the future for herself and found that her mother would become well again if she had attended a prestigious school that would help enhance her abilities. Night Raven College. Once her mother found out about her magical abilities pertaining to predicting the future, she gave her the crystal ball that had been passed down from generations of fortune tellers. “Use it well for if you do not, it will break. If this breaks, it will never be of help to you again. The Great Seven will curse you to never use magic for the rest of your days.”
⋆ Working tirelessly for the next few years, they would save up more than enough Thaumarks/Madol by the time they were able to in order to expand their business. The daughter for her fortune-telling and the mother for her tarot card readings. The more well-known the duo became, the more fame that they had via word of mouth. Unfortunately, this came with some consequences as the duo were becoming more well-known. There were more customers that were not too keen on having their bad fortunes read to them.
⋆ At one point, there was a customer angry and offended enough that the daughter had endured acid to the face. Being rushed to the nearest hospital, she had to be attended to immediately. Having been there for days, she had ended up losing one of her eyes, having to use glass eyes for the rest of her life although her skin was able to be saved. However, it had left them with a scar that up to now has not fully healed. Her mother was distraught, worried for her child’s safety and health. Thus she had to close down the shop for multiple days, losing revenue on it.
⋆ But that was nothing to her compared to the potential loss of her child. From these days forward, they would have to wear intricate prosthetic masks in order to cover and hide the face as it is slowly healing. Luckily for the duo, the doctors and nurses were sympathetic enough to tell them ways that they could pay off their medical expenses, even helping them by buying some of their services. Since these were all during Athanasia’s teenage years, this has reflected on how they see beauty standards and their envy for beautiful faces. It has (to an extent) affected the way that they see themself, seeing themself as a hideous creature. To this day, they had to hide their face from the world via a prosthetic mask. Fortunately for them, the masks were used to also intimidate and scare off former disgruntled customers.
